The verdict

A struggling compact luxury sedan, strong on driving and held back by safety.

The 2017 CLA was the cheapest way into a new Mercedes sedan at $33,395. It pairs a sharp-handling, 208-hp turbo four with swoopy four-door-coupe styling. The trade-offs are big, though: a 27-inch rear seat that barely fits adults, a harsh ride, dated knob-driven tech, and no NHTSA or IIHS crash-test results. As a used buy it suits a single driver or a couple who want the badge and a nimble city car. Anyone who carries passengers or wants real luxury comfort should look elsewhere.

Detailed scoring by subject

1Performance & PowertrainGrades near the bottom of the scale.0.94F
Horsepower
208 hp (CLA 250); 375 hp Mercedes-AMG CLA 45
20/100
#8 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

2017 is the mid-cycle facelift year of the first-generation (C117, 2014–2019) CLA. The facelift changed styling and equipment, not the CLA 250's 208-hp 2.0L turbo four. The AMG CLA 45 rose to 375 hp with the refresh.

Torque
258 lb-ft (CLA 250); 350 lb-ft AMG CLA 45
42/100
#4 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The CLA 250's turbo four makes 258 lb-ft, which is healthy mid-range torque for a compact luxury sedan.

0–60 mph time
6.9 s (CLA 250 FWD, mfr; 6.8 s 4MATIC; 6.4 s Edmunds-tested); 4.1 s AMG CLA 45
40/100
#8 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

Mercedes quotes 6.9 s for the front-drive CLA 250, and Edmunds' instrumented run was quicker at 6.4 s. That is adequate but unremarkable for the class.

Powertrain refinement60
#7 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The turbo four pulls well once rolling. Reviewers note turbo lag from a stop and an engine note that sounds coarse for a Mercedes.

Transmission behavior58
#7 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The 7G-DCT dual-clutch shifts quickly at speed. It is jerky and hesitant in stop-and-go traffic and when parking, a common complaint about this generation.

AWD/4WD availability72
#4 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

4MATIC AWD is optional on the CLA 250 and standard on the AMG CLA 45. The base car is front-wheel drive.

Powertrain lineup breadth45
#5 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

There are only two outputs of one 2.0L turbo four: the CLA 250 and the AMG CLA 45. The 2017 range has no hybrid, PHEV or EV option.

2Efficiency & RangeOne of the CLA's weakest categories.0.26F
3SafetyThe CLA's lowest-graded category.0.07F
NHTSA overall rating
Not rated by NHTSA (FWD and 4MATIC)
0/100
#8 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The 2017 CLA is the mid-cycle refresh year of the first-generation C117 (2014–2019), and NHTSA never crash-tested it. Both 2017 NCAP entries read 'Not Rated', so under the framework's never-rated rule the item scores 0.

IIHS awards & crashworthiness40
#8 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

IIHS never ran its crashworthiness tests (overlap, side, roof, head restraints) on the first-generation CLA sedan. It evaluated only headlights, which rated Poor, and front crash prevention. The car has no award and no US crash data, and the Poor headlights would rule out an award anyway.

Standard ADAS suite breadth30
#7 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

For the 2017 refresh, the CLA 250 gained a standard rearview camera and standard Collision Prevention Assist Plus (radar forward-collision warning with low-speed Active Brake Assist), alongside Attention Assist. Blind Spot Assist, DISTRONIC PLUS adaptive cruise and Lane Keeping Assist all remained options, which is a thin standard suite for a luxury car.

Automatic emergency braking performance50
#8 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The optional system (Active Brake Assist with DISTRONIC) earned IIHS's Superior rating by avoiding collisions at both 12 and 25 mph. The standard system was not tested because it doesn't meet IIHS's warning criteria. IIHS never ran its pedestrian or night tests on this car.

Blind-spot & cross-traffic coverage35
#8 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

Blind Spot Assist came only in an option package. The first-generation CLA offered no rear cross-traffic alert, active intervention or exit warning.

Lane keeping & centering35
#6 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

Lane Keeping Assist (a warning plus brake-based correction) is optional in the Driver Assistance Package. There is no lane departure warning on the base car, and the C117 never offered lane-centering steering assist.

Adaptive cruise & highway assist50
#7 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The radar DISTRONIC PLUS adaptive cruise is capable, but it is optional only. With no steering assist to pair it with, there is no integrated highway-assist mode.

Hands-free driving availability5
#4 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The 2017 CLA offered no hands-free driving system, and not even hands-on lane centering.

Headlight performance20
#7 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

IIHS rated the standard halogen-reflector headlights Poor, with inadequate visibility on both sides of the straightaway. There is no curve-adaptive lighting or high-beam assist on the tested setup, and LED lamps were optional.

Outward visibility50
#8 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The four-door-coupe roofline brings thick C-pillars, a shallow rear window and a high beltline, so rear-quarter sightlines are poor. The rearview camera that became standard for 2017 helps, but blind-spot monitoring and parking sensors are optional.

Child-seat (LATCH) usability45
#7 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

There are two outboard LATCH positions, but the small rear doors, low sloping roof and tight rear legroom make rear-facing seats and loading children awkward. IIHS published no LATCH rating for this car.

4Space & ComfortGrades near the bottom of the scale.0.74F
Seating capacity
5 seats (rear center position barely usable)
100/100
#1 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

It is rated for five, but a tall driveline tunnel makes the rear center seat nominal, so it effectively seats four.

Front headroom
38.2 in (less with panoramic roof)
55/100
#5 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

Front headroom is average for a compact sedan, though the low, coupe-like roofline makes the cabin feel tighter than the figure suggests.

Front legroom
40.2 in
5/100
#8 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

Front legroom is near the bottom of the sedan band, and a wide center console limits knee room.

Rear headroom
35.4 in
10/100
#8 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The sloping 'four-door coupe' roofline leaves rear headroom among the tightest of any sedan.

Rear legroom
27.0 in
0/100
#8 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

At 27 in, rear legroom is far below the sedan band and smaller than most subcompacts. Reviewers call the rear seat cramped for most adults.

Cargo/trunk volume
13.1 cu ft
31/100
#2 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The trunk is typical for a compact luxury sedan and has a large, flat floor, but the opening narrows sharply at the bottom.

In-cabin storage & clever solutions42
#5 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

In-cabin storage is sparse: a small armrest bin, narrow door pockets and a cramped console. Rear-seat folding is the only flexibility, and there are no clever storage solutions.

Seat comfort55
#8 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The front seats are supportive, and power seats with memory are available. The rear cushions are upright and firm, and poor for long trips.

Ride quality38
#8 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The ride is harsh and busy even with the optional adjustable dampers in Comfort mode. It is the most consistent criticism of the C117 CLA.

Cabin quietness50
#8 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

Road noise is more noticeable than in other Mercedes sedans, but reviewers judge the cabin respectably quiet for the class.

Climate & comfort features50
#6 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

Dual-zone climate is standard. Heated front seats are only in the $2,350 Premium Package, and ventilated seats, a heated wheel, rear vents and remote pre-conditioning are not offered.

MY2017 is the facelift year of the first-generation (C117) CLA, which opened with the front-drive CLA 250. It was the cheapest way into a new Mercedes sedan that year.

Volume-Trim Price

#2 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The typical US build was a CLA 250 4MATIC with the Premium Package. Adding the Multimedia or Smartphone Integration packages pushed it toward $40K, and a loaded car approached $50K.

5-Year Maintenance & Repair Cost

49/100
#4 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

Mercedes alternates dealer-rate Service A/B visits, and brake and run-flat tire replacements add to that. This puts a realistic 5-year figure near $5.8K, above mainstream compacts but typical of German entry-luxury cars.

5-Year Resale Value Retention
~56% of volume-trim price retained at 5 yr (2022, inflated used market)
70/100
#1 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

A 2017 CLA 250 4MATIC reached its 5-year mark in 2022, at the peak of the used-car price spike, when values sat near $21K. That is about 56% of a typically optioned car. KBB now values it at about $14.4K.

US buyers got no included scheduled maintenance; prepaid service plans cost extra. Perks were limited to roadside assistance for the warranty term and an mbrace connected-services trial, behind BMW's included 3-yr/36k maintenance.

Effective 5-Year Ownership Cost

#1 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

$38,000 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (56% retained, or about $21,280) leaves about $16,720 in depreciation. Add the projected $5,800 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $22,520 in total.

6Reliability & QualityOne of the CLA's strongest categories.1.78C-
Predicted reliability58
#4 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

2017 is a mid-cycle year of the first-generation CLA (C117), the year after the 2016 refresh, so early-build teething issues had largely been worked through. J.D. Power's predicted reliability (as reported by U.S. News) was above average, but Consumer Reports rated the first-gen CLA below average, citing the DCT, power equipment and in-car electronics. The two sources disagree, which puts this in the middle band.

Brand reliability track record55
#5 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

In the 2016–2019 period, Mercedes-Benz sat in the lower half of Consumer Reports' brand reliability rankings. In J.D. Power's Vehicle Dependability Study it hovered around the industry average. That makes it mid-pack at best, well behind Lexus, Toyota and Porsche.

Recall & TSB history42
#7 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

Ten NHTSA campaigns cover MY2017 CLA variants, and several are serious. They include a starter current limiter that can overheat and cause a fire, inadvertent driver-airbag deployment from insufficient steering-column grounding, a steering-shaft U-joint bearing that can separate, a miscalibrated passenger occupant-classification sensor, and faulty pelvis/passenger airbag modules. Repeated fire-risk and safety-system recalls put this in the lower band.

Powertrain durability reputation58
#7 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The volume CLA250's M270 2.0L turbo four is generally robust. The 7G-DCT (724.0) wet dual-clutch has a mixed record, with harsh low-speed shifting, judder, premature clutch wear around 40–60k miles, and mechatronic failures costing up to about $3,200. There is no catastrophic engine pattern, but the transmission is a known weak point.

Interior material quality55
#8 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The first-gen CLA's cabin was a common criticism at launch. The stand-up, tablet-style screen and round turbine vents looked the part, but reviewers flagged hard plastics, a base car trimmed in MB-Tex, and a feel below what the three-pointed star implies. It trails the Audi A3 sedan for perceived quality.

Fit & finish60
#7 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

Hungarian-built (Kecskemét) assembly is generally consistent, but owners commonly report interior rattles and trim creaks. The firm suspension makes them worse. Production-side recalls (miscalibrated OCS sensors, airbag grounding, front panel adhesive) point to scattered quality-control misses.

Dealer & service network76
#4 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

Mercedes-Benz USA has about 380 dealers, giving dense coverage in metro areas but thinner rural presence. Service satisfaction is around the luxury-segment average, behind Lexus.

Parts availability & repair cost55
#4 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

Parts are plentiful because the MFA platform is shared with the high-volume A/B/GLA family. Aftermarket support for a nine-year-old car is decent. Luxury-brand labor rates and dealer-only DCT mechatronic and electronics work still keep repair costs well above average.

7Technology & InfotainmentOne of the CLA's weakest categories.0.25F
Touchscreen size
8.0 in center display, standard for 2017 (not a touchscreen: COMAND rotary controller)
12/100
#1 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The 2017 refresh made a thinner, glass-covered 8-inch display standard. It is a freestanding screen controlled by a console knob, not a touchscreen.

Infotainment UX & responsiveness42
#6 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The knob-driven COMAND/Audio 20 interface has deep menus and no touch input, and was dated by 2017. The screen looks like an afterthought perched on the dash.

Wireless CarPlay / Android Auto40
#3 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

Wireless projection was never offered. Wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto came only in the optional Smartphone Integration package, and early-build availability was inconsistent.

Voice control & native navigation45
#6 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

Native navigation needs the $2,300 Multimedia Package. Linguatronic voice control is command-based rather than natural-language.

Audio system quality60
#8 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The base stereo is ordinary. A Harman Kardon Logic7 surround system is available in the Premium 1 package.

Digital instrument cluster28
#8 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The cluster has analog dials with a small multifunction display between them. No full-digital cluster was offered on the C117.

OTA update capability12
#6 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

There are no over-the-air software updates. Map updates are dealer or media based.

Companion app & remote functions45
#4 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The mbrace/Mercedes me subscription app offered remote lock/unlock, vehicle locate and roadside services. There was no remote start or digital key.

Charging ports & device power32
#5 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

There are USB-A media ports in the front armrest plus 12V sockets. The car has no USB-C, no wireless charging and no rear ports.

Keyless & remote access48
#8 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

KEYLESS-GO proximity entry and push-button start are optional in the Premium 1 package. The volume car uses a key fob in the dash, with no remote start or phone-as-key.

Camera & parking aids52
#5 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

A rearview camera became standard for 2017. Parktronic sensors with Active Parking Assist are optional, and no surround-view camera was offered.

Head-up display availability5
#6 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

No head-up display was offered on the 2017 CLA.

8Use-Case FitGrades near the bottom of the scale.0.43F
Kid & car-seat practicality28
#8 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

Small rear door openings, a low roofline and 27 in of rear legroom make loading kids and rear-facing seats a struggle. The narrow trunk opening fights strollers.

Family safety package42
#8 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

Collision Prevention Assist and a rear camera are standard. The car has no NHTSA overall rating, no IIHS crashworthiness results and Poor headlights, and blind-spot and adaptive cruise are optional.

Family road-trip comfort33
#8 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The cramped, firm rear seat has no rear vents or ports, and the modest 13.1 cu ft trunk makes it a poor four-up long-trip car.

Daily driving ease52
#8 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

It is compact and easy to place in traffic, but the dual-clutch lurches at low speed, turbo lag shows off the line and the harsh ride wears on daily use.

Commuting cost efficiency58
#3 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

Economy of about 27 MPG combined is decent for the class, but the car requires premium fuel and luxury-brand consumables.

Parking & maneuverability72
#3 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

A small footprint and a 36 ft turning circle make it easy in the city. Limited rear visibility is offset by the now-standard rear camera.

Work capability8
#7 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

It has no US tow rating, a small trunk with a narrow opening and no work-oriented capacity.

Durability for work duty28
#3 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

It is an entry-luxury sedan with a DCT and turbo four that have no fleet or hard-use reputation.

Jobsite & upfit practicality8
#6 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

It has no onboard power, hitch or upfit ecosystem, only 12V outlets.

Long-distance comfort & range50
#8 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

Supportive front seats, reasonable highway economy and optional DISTRONIC PLUS help. A harsh ride and noticeable road noise limit it as a mile-eater.

Outdoor & adventure capability30
#6 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

Optional 4MATIC AWD helps in bad weather, but low ground clearance and no tow rating keep it on pavement.

Gear & luggage flexibility38
#6 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The trunk is decent with a flat floor, and fold-down rear seatbacks extend it. The opening narrows sharply and there are no roof rails or hitch from the factory.

10Value & Market PositionMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.73C-
Standard equipment generosity48
#8 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The 2017 refresh made a larger infotainment screen standard, and the base car came with forward-collision warning, a rearview camera, rain-sensing wipers and dual-zone climate. Blind-spot assist, keyless entry, heated seats, navigation and smartphone integration were still extra-cost options.

Feature value per dollar52
#8 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

A $33.4K entry price for a Mercedes badge and a 208-hp turbo was the draw. Options quickly pushed it to $40–50K for a cramped car with a jerky dual-clutch transmission.

Trim & configuration breadth55
#8 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The lineup was CLA 250 FWD, CLA 250 4MATIC and the 375-hp Mercedes-AMG CLA 45, with option packages layered on top. It offered a sensible choice but only one mainstream engine.

Sales popularity & market acceptance55
#6 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

In the US the CLA sold in the low-20,000s a year, which made it one of the stronger entry-luxury compact sedans. Volume was declining, however, from its 2014–2015 peak as buyers moved to the GLA and crossovers.

Brand desirability & image82
#4 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The three-pointed star is among the most aspirational badges in the US market and was the CLA's core appeal to younger first-time luxury buyers.

Deals & incentive availability70
#6 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

MBUSA regularly supported the CLA 250 with subvented lease specials, and dealers discounted loaner and demo units, which gave buyers some room to negotiate.

Model freshness45
#7 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

MY2017 was the mid-cycle facelift of the C117 generation launched for 2014, with new bumpers, integrated exhausts, a larger screen and new trim. The platform itself was four years old, and the C118 replacement came for 2020.

Critical reception & awards52
#8 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

Reviews were mixed. Critics praised the styling, handling and performance, but it was rarely a comparison-test winner, and they criticized its ride, rear space and low-speed transmission behavior.
