The verdict
A struggling compact luxury sedan, strong on driving and held back by efficiency.
The 2020 CLA was the first year of a full redesign. It is a handsome, sharp-handling four-door coupe with a 221-hp turbo four and a genuinely modern MBUX cabin, starting around $37,645. The trade-offs are real: rear legroom of 33.9 in and an 11.6 cu ft trunk, no NHTSA or IIHS crash-test results, premium fuel, and a launch-year recall list around a dozen campaigns long. It suits a style- and badge-driven buyer who mostly drives with one passenger. Anyone who regularly carries adults in back should look elsewhere.
Jump to scoresStrengths
- Badge appeal and a fresh design
- Agile, enjoyable handling
- Standout voice control and digital cockpit
What holds it back
- Cramped rear seat and a small trunk
- No US crash-test ratings and thin standard safety tech
- Premium fuel and a short range

Detailed scoring by subject
1Performance & PowertrainGrades below the middle of the scale.1.35D
2020 is the launch year of the second-generation (C118) CLA in the US. The volume CLA 250 uses the new M260 2.0L turbo I4, a jump over the prior generation's 208 hp, and the AMG CLA 35 and CLA 45 widen the output range.
The CLA 250's turbo four makes 258 lb-ft across a broad rev range, which is solid for a compact luxury sedan.
Mercedes quotes 0–60 mph in 6.3 s for the 2020 CLA 250, and a road test ran 6.2 s. That is competitive for the class but not quick.
The M260 turbo four pulls strongly in the mid-range. Reviewers note some turbo lag from a stop and an engine note that sounds coarse for the badge. The 2020 car has no mild-hybrid assist.
The 7-speed dual-clutch shifts quickly and directly at speed. It draws criticism for jerky, hesitant low-speed and stop-and-go behavior, which is typical of DCTs.
4MATIC AWD is optional on the CLA 250 and standard on both AMG models. On the CLA 45, 4MATIC+ adds rear torque vectoring. The base car is FWD.
Three turbo-four outputs (CLA 250, AMG CLA 35, AMG CLA 45) run from mainstream to high-performance. The 2020 US lineup has no hybrid, PHEV or EV option.
2Efficiency & RangeThe CLA's lowest-graded category.0.09F
The front-drive 2020 CLA 250 is rated at 28 mpg combined, 1 mpg below the 2021 rating and about average for a gas luxury compact.
The FWD CLA 250 has an EPA city rating of 25 mpg.
The EPA highway rating is a good 35 mpg for the 2020 FWD model.
The small 13.5-gallon tank limits range despite decent economy. The figure is the EPA combined rating multiplied by tank capacity.
The premium fuel requirement makes the EPA annual fuel cost high compared with mainstream sedans.
Every 2020 CLA trim calls for premium unleaded, which adds real running cost compared with rivals that take regular fuel.
3SafetyOne of the CLA's weakest categories.0.85F
2020 is the US launch year of the second-generation (C118) CLA, and NHTSA never crash-tested it. Both 2020 CLA-Class NCAP entries read 'Not Rated' across overall, frontal, side and pole, so under the framework's never-rated rule the item scores 0.
IIHS never tested the 2020-on CLA, so it has no award and no US crashworthiness data. That puts it in the low band, but not deep in it: there are no known structural concerns, and Euro NCAP gave the same body 5 stars in 2019.
The 2020 CLA 250 comes standard with Active Brake Assist (forward-collision warning plus AEB), Attention Assist, Crosswind Assist and a rear camera. Blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise, lane keeping and rear cross-traffic alert are all optional. That is thinner than luxury-segment norms, and thinner than the 2021 car, which made Blind Spot Assist standard.
IIHS has published no front-crash-prevention result for this generation. Euro NCAP's 2019 test of the same car scored its AEB and vulnerable-road-user protection well, but that was the European spec, and there is no US night-pedestrian data.
On the 2020 CLA 250, blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are option-list items, not standard. Active Blind Spot Assist, which brakes to intervene, and cross-traffic braking come in the Driver Assistance Package; the AMG CLA 45 is the only version with blind-spot alert as standard.
Lane-departure warning is not standard on the 2020 CLA (NHTSA lists it as optional). With the Driver Assistance Package, Active Steering Assist and Active Lane Keeping Assist give smooth, well-regarded hands-on centering, but volume buyers have to option it.
Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC with stop-and-go and Route-Based Speed Adaptation is refined and well integrated with Active Steering Assist. It is optional rather than standard on the CLA 250, which keeps it out of the top band.
The 2020 CLA offered no hands-free driving system; the Driver Assistance Package needs hands on the wheel. In the US, Mercedes' Drive Pilot arrived years later and only on the S-Class and EQS.
LED headlamps are standard. Active LED headlamps with Adaptive Highbeam Assist cost extra. IIHS never rated this generation's headlights, so beam quality is unverified.
The four-door-coupe roofline brings thick C-pillars, a shallow rear window and a high beltline, so rear-quarter sightlines are poor. Only a rear camera is standard, and on the base car nothing compensates for the blind zones: the surround-view camera and blind-spot monitoring are both optional.
There are two outboard LATCH positions, but the small rear doors, low sloping roofline and tight rear legroom make loading children and fitting rear-facing seats awkward. IIHS has not rated LATCH on this generation.
4Space & ComfortGrades below the middle of the scale.1.34D
MY2020 is the US launch year of the second-generation (C118) CLA. It seats five, though the middle rear seat is tight under the fastback roof.
Front headroom is competitive for a compact luxury sedan, and the figure already reflects the standard panoramic sunroof. Consumer Guide still calls the front 'cozy for large occupants'.
Front legroom is adequate but not generous for the class.
The sloping roofline cuts into rear headroom, and taller adults brush the headliner.
Rear legroom is among the smallest in the segment and is the CLA's main packaging weakness.
The trunk is small for the class. It has a fairly large opening, and the split-folding rear seatbacks help with long items.
The glovebox and front door pockets are big and handy, but the console box and rear door pockets are small. Nothing about the storage is clever.
The standard power sport front seats are comfortable and supportive. The cramped, low rear bench drags the item down.
Reviewers split on the ride. Consumer Guide and Autoblog praise the damping and ride/handling balance, while other outlets find it stiff over sharp bumps, especially on the AMG Line wheels.
Road noise is tolerable and wind noise is well controlled, but the buzzy four-cylinder under load keeps the cabin short of the class leaders.
Dual-zone automatic climate and a panoramic roof are standard. Heated seats (about $580), ventilated seats and a heated wheel all cost extra on a ~$37K luxury car.
5Cost of OwnershipGrades below the middle of the scale.1.48D
MY2020 launched the second-generation (C118) CLA, which opened with the front-drive CLA 250 at about $37.6K including destination. That undercut the 2021 car by roughly $1,250.
The typical US build was a CLA 250 4MATIC with the Premium Package, which adds the 10.25-in dual screens and keyless-go, landing near $42K. Adding the Driver Assistance or AMG Line packages quickly pushed it past $45K.
The industry estimates diverge. The Mercedes Service A/B alternating schedule, brake jobs and run-flat tire replacement put a realistic 5-year figure near $6K, above mainstream compacts.
In late 2026, about 6.5 years on, a 2020 CLA 250 4MATIC is worth about $20.1K private party, roughly 51% of its $39.6K sticker. A strict 5-year mark would sit slightly higher, near 52–53%.
The Mercedes-Benz new-vehicle limited warranty runs 4 years or 50,000 miles. That is par for German luxury brands and behind Genesis (5 yr/60k).
There is no longer, separate powertrain term; coverage ends with the 4-yr/50k basic warranty. That trails Lexus/Acura (6 yr/70k) and Genesis (10 yr/100k).
US buyers got no included scheduled maintenance; prepaid plans cost extra. Roadside assistance for the warranty term and a Mercedes me connect trial are basic perks, behind BMW's included 3-yr/36k maintenance.
$42,300 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (52% retained, or about $21,996) leaves about $20,304 in depreciation. Add the projected $6,000 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $26,304 in total.
6Reliability & QualityOne of the CLA's strongest categories.1.96C-
2020 is the launch model year of the second-generation CLA (C118) in the US, a first-year redesign with a new MBUX electronics suite. J.D. Power puts its predicted reliability at 69/100, just into the below-average 'Fair' band and lower than the 73 of the 2021 and the 83 of the 2023. Consumer Reports rates the 2019–2023 CLA fair to poor, citing in-car electronics and the turbo/DCT powertrain.
Around 2020, Mercedes-Benz sat in the lower half of Consumer Reports' brand reliability rankings and near or below the industry average in J.D. Power's Vehicle Dependability Study. That is mid-pack at best and well behind Lexus and Toyota.
As the launch year of the C118, the 2020 CLA carries the heaviest recall load in the nameplate. About a dozen NHTSA campaigns touch MY2020 CLA variants, including improperly bolted driver airbag modules, the large 2026 door-lock micro-switch rollaway recall, fuel-rail particle contamination, and several MBUX, rear-camera and eCall software fixes. Most affected few units or were software fixes, and none is a systemic powertrain or fire defect, but the count and the safety-system items keep this at the bottom of the typical band.
The M260 2.0L turbo four is shared across the A-Class, GLA and GLB and shows no systemic failure pattern. The 7G-DCT dual-clutch has a mixed record, with owners reporting low-speed judder and some mechatronic/clutch repairs. In its first year in the new body, it earns no red flags but is no high-mileage benchmark either.
The dual-screen MBUX dash, turbine vents and ambient lighting give the cabin a far richer look than the first-gen car. Reviewers note hard plastics in the lower doors and console at this entry-luxury price. It is competitive with the Audi A3 and BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe rather than ahead of them.
Assembly is generally tight, but the launch year shows early-build defects. Driver airbag modules not properly bolted, particles trapped in fuel rails, and missing brake-wear gauges are all production-line misses. Owners also report the interior rattles and trim creaks common in the compact Mercedes range.
Mercedes-Benz USA has about 380 dealers, giving dense coverage in metro areas but thinner rural presence. Service satisfaction is around the luxury-segment average, behind Lexus.
Parts are plentiful because the MFA2 platform is shared across the high-volume A/CLA/GLA/GLB family. Repair and maintenance pricing is still luxury-brand expensive, and electronics and DCT work mostly goes through the dealer.
7Technology & InfotainmentMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.83C-
The CLA 250 comes with a 7-inch MBUX touchscreen as standard. The 10.25-inch widescreen pair is an option.
In MY2020 the brand-new MBUX was quick, attractive and praised for its voice interface. Its touchpad and steering-wheel touch controls are finicky, and the menus are deep.
Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard but wired-only on the 2020 NTG6 MBUX. Wireless projection arrived with the MY2024 update.
The standard 'Hey Mercedes' natural-language assistant is a genuine strength. Native navigation with augmented-video guidance is in the optional Multimedia Package.
The standard audio with HD Radio is ordinary. The optional Burmester surround system is well regarded.
A reconfigurable 7-inch digital cluster is standard, and the Premium Package upgrades it to 10.25 inches.
MBUX supports over-the-air software and map updates through Mercedes me connect. There is no whole-vehicle, feature-adding OTA.
The Mercedes me app offers remote start, locate, lock and send-to-car, with three years of service included. The services are subscription-gated afterward, and there is no digital key.
Multiple USB-C ports are standard, which put the CLA ahead of many 2020 rivals. Wireless charging is optional, and there is no AC outlet.
Push-button start and app remote start are standard. Proximity KEYLESS-GO with a hands-free trunk is optional, and there is no phone-as-key.
A rearview camera is standard. Parking sensors, Active Parking Assist and the surround-view camera are all in an optional package.
A head-up display is available as a standalone option. It is not standard or part of a common package.
8Use-Case FitOne of the CLA's weakest categories.0.73F
Small rear door openings under a sloping roof, 33.9 in of rear legroom and an 11.6 cu ft trunk make daily car-seat and stroller duty a chore.
There are no NHTSA or IIHS ratings for 2020. AEB is standard, but blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise and lane keeping are extra-cost options.
The tight rear seat and small trunk limit road trips with four adults. Rear amenities are thin beyond vents and USB ports.
It is small and nimble in traffic, but the 7-speed dual-clutch hesitates off the line and can be jerky at low speed.
28 MPG combined is fine for a luxury car, but premium fuel and Mercedes service costs push the per-mile cost above mainstream compacts.
A compact footprint and a roughly 36-ft turning circle help in town. The pinched rear view makes the optional sensors and 360 camera worthwhile.
There is no US tow rating, and the 11.6 cu ft trunk is small, so it is not a work vehicle.
This luxury-oriented compact rides on low-profile tires with MB-Tex and Dinamica trim. It is not built for abuse and has no fleet reputation.
It has no onboard power, no hitch provision and no upfit ecosystem.
It is a decent highway cruiser, with 35 MPG highway, roughly 378 miles of range and supportive front seats. DISTRONIC costs extra.
Optional 4MATIC helps in bad weather, but low ground clearance, no tow rating and the sedan body keep it pavement-bound.
The 40/20/40 split rear seatbacks and a fairly large trunk opening help, but the small trunk restricts bulky gear.
9Driving ExperienceThe CLA's best-graded category.2.46C+
It is agile and composed, with good body control. Its FWD-based chassis still trails the RWD BMW 3 Series for engagement.
Steering is precise and well weighted, with weight adjustable by drive mode. Most reviewers find it filtered rather than truly communicative.
Brakes are strong and progressive for a car of about 3,300 lb, with predictive brake priming, and reviews raise no complaints. No instrumented 2020 stopping distance was retrieved.
The 221-hp turbo four has strong mid-range torque and the DCT shifts smoothly on the move. Hesitation off the line and low-speed jerkiness hurt it in stop-and-go traffic.
The four-cylinder sounds buzzy under load, which is less refined than the badge implies.
The turning circle is tidy for the segment and helps in urban maneuvering.
The power sport seats give a good, low driving position. Rear visibility through the sloping roof is poor, the touchpad and touch controls are fussy, and small doors hamper getting in and out.
The CLA 250 is zippy, agile and stylish. The AMG CLA 35 and CLA 45 are the genuinely fun variants.
10Value & Market PositionOne of the CLA's strongest categories.2.42C+
The base car has MBUX with 7-in dual screens, LED headlights, automatic emergency braking and a 221-hp turbo-4. The 10.25-in screens, keyless-go and adaptive cruise with active lane assist all cost extra through packages.
The redesigned 2020 CLA offered the brand's newest tech and a coupe-styled, well-finished cabin from about $37.6K. Option creep, though, pushed a well-equipped car toward C-Class money with a tight rear seat.
There was one core CLA 250 in FWD or 4MATIC, plus the AMG CLA 35 and, from mid-2020, the AMG CLA 45. That made a clear $37.6K–$55.8K ladder with deep package flexibility, but no hybrid and no US Shooting Brake.
The redesigned CLA was a common entry point into the brand, but it shared that slot with the new A-Class sedan. COVID-era 2020 volumes and buyers moving to the GLA/GLB crossovers held the subcompact-luxury sedan class back.
The three-pointed star is among the most aspirational US badges, and the second generation's CLS-like styling was its main draw. The entry-model 'budget Benz' perception lingers.
Mercedes-Benz Financial ran regular CLA lease specials. After the 2020 pandemic shutdowns it offered deferred-payment and low-APR financing, before the 2021 chip shortage dried incentives up.
MY2020 is the launch year of the second-generation (C118) CLA, fully redesigned on the MFA2 platform with MBUX. It was the freshest car in its class, with a refresh years away.
Reviewers welcomed the redesign's styling, MBUX, refinement and handling, but criticised the rear-seat and trunk-opening space and optioned-up pricing. It was rarely a class comparison winner.
