The verdict
A struggling compact luxury sedan, strong on driving and held back by safety.
The 2018 CLA was the cheapest way into a new Mercedes sedan at $33,695. It pairs the badge and sleek four-door-coupe styling with a 208-hp turbo four, 37 MPG on the highway and tidy handling. It asks a lot in return: a 27.1-inch rear seat that barely fits adults, no NHTSA or IIHS crash-test results, Poor-rated headlights, a firm ride, and an aging cabin where most safety and tech features cost extra. As a used buy it suits style-minded singles and couples. Anyone carrying passengers or wanting a genuinely luxurious Mercedes should look elsewhere.

Detailed scoring by subject
1Performance & PowertrainGrades near the bottom of the scale.0.94F
2018 is a carry-over year late in the first-generation (C117, 2014–2019) CLA. The volume CLA 250 uses a 208-hp 2.0L turbo four, and the AMG CLA 45 tops the range at 375 hp.
The CLA 250's turbo four makes 258 lb-ft, which is healthy mid-range torque for a compact luxury sedan.
Mercedes quotes 6.9 s for the front-drive CLA 250, and Edmunds' instrumented run was quicker at 6.4 s. That is adequate but unremarkable for the class.
The turbo four pulls well once rolling. Reviewers note turbo lag and hesitation from a stop, and an engine note that sounds coarse for a Mercedes.
The 7G-DCT dual-clutch shifts quickly at speed. It is jerky and hesitant in stop-and-go traffic and when parking, which is a common complaint about this generation.
4MATIC AWD is optional on the CLA 250 and standard on the AMG CLA 45. The base car is front-wheel drive.
There are only two outputs of one 2.0L turbo four: the CLA 250 and the AMG CLA 45. The 2018 range has no hybrid, PHEV or EV option.
2Efficiency & RangeOne of the CLA's weakest categories.0.29F
The front-drive 2018 CLA 250 is rated at 29 MPG combined, which is middling for a gas compact sedan.
The EPA city rating is 24 MPG for both drivetrains.
The FWD car's slippery body and tall gearing earn a strong 37 MPG highway rating.
The small first-generation fuel tank limits range despite decent economy. The figure is the EPA combined rating multiplied by tank capacity.
The premium fuel requirement makes the EPA annual fuel cost high compared with mainstream sedans.
Every 2018 CLA trim calls for premium unleaded, which adds real running cost compared with rivals that take regular. One 4MATIC variant is E85 flex-fuel capable, but that does little to cut costs in practice.
3SafetyThe CLA's lowest-graded category.0.07F
The 2018 CLA is a late first-generation (C117, 2014–2019) car. NHTSA never crash-tested it: both 2018 NCAP entries read 'Not Rated' for overall, frontal, side and rollover, so under the framework's never-rated rule the item scores 0.
IIHS never ran its crashworthiness tests (small/moderate overlap, side, roof, head restraints) on the first-generation CLA sedan. It evaluated only headlights, which rated Poor, and front crash prevention. The car therefore has no award and no US crash data. With Poor headlights ruling out any award, it lands in the low band.
The 2018 CLA 250 comes standard with Collision Prevention Assist Plus (low-speed Active Brake Assist, added for 2017), Attention Assist and a rearview camera. Blind Spot Assist, DISTRONIC PLUS adaptive cruise, Lane Keeping Assist and full-speed PRE-SAFE Brake are all optional. That is thin for a luxury car, even by the standards of 2018.
Optional equipment (the Driver Assistance Package, with DISTRONIC PLUS and PRE-SAFE Brake) earned IIHS's Superior rating by avoiding a collision in the 12 mph test. IIHS says the standard system does not meet its forward-collision-warning criteria and has not tested its autobrake. That test predates IIHS pedestrian and night evaluations, and those were never run on this car.
Blind Spot Assist is an option-package item, not standard. Rear cross-traffic alert was not offered on the first-generation CLA, and there is no active intervention or exit warning.
Lane Keeping Assist (warning plus brake-based correction) is optional in the Driver Assistance Package. The C117 CLA never offered lane-centering steering assist, and the base car has no lane-departure warning at all.
Radar-based DISTRONIC PLUS adaptive cruise is available and well regarded, but only as an option. It is not paired with any steering assist, so there is no integrated highway-assist mode.
No hands-free driving system was offered, and there is not even hands-on lane centering.
IIHS rated the halogen-reflector headlights Poor: visibility was inadequate on the straightaway and on all four curves. LED headlamps were only an option.
The four-door-coupe roofline brings thick C-pillars, a shallow rear window and a high beltline, so rear-quarter sightlines are poor. Only a rear camera is standard to compensate, and blind-spot monitoring and parking sensors are optional.
There are two outboard LATCH positions, but the small rear door openings, low sloping roof and very tight rear legroom make fitting rear-facing seats and loading children awkward. IIHS never published a LATCH rating for this car.
4Space & ComfortGrades near the bottom of the scale.0.80F
The 2018 CLA is a late first-generation (C117, 2014–2019) car. It is certified for five, although the rear center position is only for occasional use.
Without the sunroof, front headroom is average for a compact sedan. The optional Panorama roof takes away 1.2 in.
Front legroom is at the bottom of the sedan band. Mercedes' published figure is short for the class.
The four-door-coupe roofline leaves little rear headroom, and taller adults touch the headliner.
At 27.1 in, rear legroom is far below the 32-in floor of the sedan band, one of the smallest back seats sold as a sedan. Owners describe it as suitable for adults only on short trips.
The trunk is below average for the class. The sloping rear deck also narrows the opening.
Storage is sparse: a small center-console bin, narrow door pockets and front and rear cupholders. There is no wireless charging pad, and the 60/40 folding rear seat is the only real flexibility.
The sport-style front seats with integrated headrests are supportive, and the brochure lists power adjustment with 3-position memory and adjustable cushion length. The rear bench is cramped and upright, which pulls the score down.
The first-generation CLA's ride was one of its most common criticisms: firm and busy over broken pavement, especially on the optional 18-in wheels. The adjustable suspension option softens it only somewhat.
Road and tire noise is noticeable at highway speed, and the run-flat tires make it worse. The four-cylinder also sounds gruff under load, so the cabin is louder than a Mercedes badge suggests.
Dual-zone automatic climate control is standard. Heated front seats cost extra (Premium Package or a stand-alone option), ventilated seats and a heated steering wheel were not offered, and there are no rear vents with separate controls.
5Cost of OwnershipOne of the CLA's strongest categories.1.99C-
MY2018 is a late year of the first-generation (C117) CLA, which opened with the front-drive CLA 250. It was the cheapest way into a new Mercedes sedan that year.
The typical US build was a CLA 250 4MATIC with the Premium Package, which added blind-spot assist, keyless go and heated seats. Adding the Multimedia Package for navigation and smartphone integration pushed it past $40K.
Mercedes alternates Service A/B visits at dealer rates, and brake and run-flat tire replacements add to that. This puts a realistic 5-year figure near $5.8K, above mainstream compacts but typical of German entry-luxury cars.
KBB values imply that a 2018 CLA 250 4MATIC was worth about $21.9K in late 2023, its 5-year mark. That is about 61% of base sticker, or roughly 57% of a typically optioned car, and the 2023 used-car price spike flatters it. By 8 years on, values had fallen to about $14.4K.
The Mercedes-Benz new-vehicle limited warranty runs 4 years or 50,000 miles, par for German luxury brands.
There is no longer, separate powertrain term; coverage ends with the 4-yr/50k basic warranty. That trails Lexus/Acura (6 yr/70k) and Genesis (10 yr/100k).
US buyers got no included scheduled maintenance; prepaid service plans cost extra. Perks were limited to roadside assistance for the warranty term and an mbrace connected-services trial, behind BMW's included 3-yr/36k maintenance.
$38,000 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (57% retained, or about $21,660) leaves about $16,340 in depreciation. Add the projected $5,800 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $22,140 in total.
6Reliability & QualityOne of the CLA's strongest categories.2.05C
The 2018 CLA is the second-to-last year of the first-generation C117, a mature carry-over year that benefits from four years of running fixes after the troubled 2014 launch. J.D. Power rates it about 3.5/5, roughly average. Consumer Reports and aggregated owner data rate first-gen CLAs below average, citing the dual-clutch transmission and electronics, so the signals are mixed and sit in the lower-average band.
Around 2018, Mercedes-Benz sat in the lower half of Consumer Reports' brand reliability rankings and near the industry average in J.D. Power's Vehicle Dependability Study. That is mid-pack at best and well behind Lexus and Toyota.
About ten NHTSA campaigns cover the 2018 CLA, typical for a luxury compact. The most significant is the large steering-wheel clockspring recall, where a driver airbag may fail to deploy. There are also two small occupant-classification calibration recalls, fleet-wide eCall software fixes, and small roof-pane and steering-shaft campaigns. Nothing touches the powertrain or involves fire, but the repeated airbag-system items hold it to the lower-middle of the typical band.
The M270 2.0L turbo four was well sorted by 2018 after the engine failures that affected some 2014 cars. The 7G-DCT dual-clutch has a known record of low-speed shudder, jerky engagement and mechatronic or clutch-pack repairs as mileage builds. That gives the powertrain a mixed history rather than a red flag.
The first-gen CLA cabin has attractive turbine vents and a nice steering wheel. Reviewers regularly criticized its hard plastics, tablet-style free-standing screen and budget-feeling switchgear as below the Mercedes badge and entry-luxury price. That places it behind the Audi A3 and on par with or behind the BMW 2 Series.
By 2018 assembly was mature and generally tight. Owners still report interior rattles and trim creaks typical of the compact Mercedes range. Two small occupant-classification miscalibration recalls and the roof-pane bonding campaigns point to some production-quality misses.
Mercedes-Benz USA has about 380 dealers, giving dense coverage in metro areas but thinner rural presence. Service satisfaction is around the luxury-segment average, behind Lexus.
Parts are plentiful because the MFA platform is shared across the high-volume A/B/CLA/GLA family, and there is a used-parts market for the 7G-DCT. Repair and maintenance pricing is still luxury-brand expensive, and transmission and electronics work at this age often runs through the dealer.
7Technology & InfotainmentOne of the CLA's weakest categories.0.37F
Every 2018 CLA gets the same 8-in high-resolution display fixed atop the dash, and no larger screen was offered. Like its C-Class and Audi A3 contemporaries it is operated by a console controller, not by touch.
The older Audio 20/COMAND interface runs on a rotary knob, with layered menus and no touch input. Reviewers found it dated and clunky next to BMW iDrive or Audi MMI of the time, though it was stable.
Apple CarPlay and Android Auto cost extra (a $350 Smartphone Integration Package, also in the Multimedia Package) and are wired only. Wireless projection was not offered.
Native navigation is optional: COMAND hard-drive navigation with voice control comes in the $2,300 Multimedia Package, and the base car is only prewired for a dealer Garmin MAP PILOT. The voice system is command-based, not natural language.
The base system is ordinary, with CD, HD Radio, SD and dual USB. The optional harman/kardon LOGIC7 surround system (about $850) is a well-regarded upgrade.
The gauges are analog with a color multifunction display between them. The C117 CLA never offered a fully digital cluster.
There are no over-the-air software updates. Navigation maps are updated through the dealer or by media (3 years of updates with the Multimedia Package), not over the air.
Five years of mbrace Connect are standard, which covers remote lock/unlock, horn/lights, vehicle locate, Valet Protect, Curfew Minder and Send2Benz destinations. There is no remote engine start or digital key.
There are two front USB-A audio ports and a 12V socket, with no USB-C, no rear USB and no wireless charging pad.
Pushbutton KEYLESS-START is standard. Proximity entry (KEYLESS-GO) with the HANDS-FREE ACCESS kick-to-open trunk is optional, in the Premium Package or for about $550 on its own. There is no remote start or phone-as-key.
A rearview camera with active guidelines is standard. Parking sensors come only with the optional Parking Pilot self-parking system (about $970), and no surround-view camera was offered.
No head-up display was offered on the 2018 CLA.
8Use-Case FitGrades near the bottom of the scale.0.39F
Small rear doors, a low sloping roof and 27.1 in of rear legroom make rear-facing child seats and daily kid loading a struggle. The 13.1 cu ft trunk has a narrow opening, which is poor for strollers.
The CLA has no NHTSA or IIHS crashworthiness ratings and Poor-rated headlights. Blind-spot, adaptive cruise and lane-keeping assist are all extra-cost packages, so the car families would actually buy has thin safety credentials.
It works for two adults, but rear passengers get minimal legroom, no rear climate controls or USB ports, and the trunk holds only modest luggage for four.
The compact footprint and a torquey turbo help in town. The 7G-DCT's low-speed lurch and hesitation, turbo lag from a stop, stop/start and a firm ride add daily friction.
It returns a good 29 MPG combined, but it needs premium fuel and run-flat tires, which lands its per-mile cost around the class average for a luxury compact.
At 182.3 in long with a 36-ft turning circle it is easy to place in the city. Thick C-pillars and a shallow back window hurt rearward visibility, and parking sensors are optional.
It has no US tow rating and only a small sedan trunk, so it is not a work vehicle.
This is a luxury-oriented compact with low-profile run-flat tires and a dual-clutch transmission, and it has no fleet or hard-use reputation.
There are no onboard power outlets beyond 12V, no hitch and no upfit ecosystem. The only related accessories are a trunk cargo net and roof racks.
It has good highway range (about 380 mi) and supportive front seats. A firm ride, road noise and extra-cost adaptive cruise without lane centering limit how well it covers distance.
Optional 4MATIC helps in snow and on gravel. Low ground clearance, run-flat low-profile tires, no tow rating and no spare keep it on pavement.
The 60/40 folding rear seat helps with long items, but the 13.1 cu ft trunk has a small, sloped opening. There is no hitch, and roof racks are dealer accessories only.

The compact, front-drive-based chassis corners tidily with good grip, and 4MATIC adds traction. It lacks the balance and adjustability of rear-drive rivals like the BMW 3 Series.
The electric steering is accurate and reasonably quick but light and short on feedback. Linear sport steering was reserved for the AMG Line package.
The brakes stop well, backed by predictive brake priming, automatic brake drying and hill-start assist. The pedal is progressive, and fade was not a common complaint.
Once moving, the 208-hp turbo four is strong and the DCT shifts quickly. Turbo lag from rest, low-speed DCT lurching and an abrupt stop/start system are frequent complaints.
The four-cylinder sounds coarse and buzzy when worked hard, which is below expectations for the brand, though it settles at cruise.
The turning circle is tight for the class, which helps with U-turns and parking garages.
Power seats with memory, cushion-length adjustment and a tilt/telescoping wheel make for a good low driving position. The low roof, high beltline, short front legroom (40.2 in) and awkward entry through the coupe-style doors detract.
It is reasonably quick (6.9 s to 60 mph) and nimble, with paddle shifters and a Sport mode. The CLA 250 is more stylish than engaging; the AMG CLA 45 is the enthusiast choice.

The base car had memory power front seats, Bluetooth and forward-collision warning. But blind-spot assist, keyless entry, heated seats, navigation and smartphone integration all sat in extra-cost packages, while rivals like the Acura ILX and Audi A3 bundled more.
A $33.7K entry price for a Mercedes badge and a 208-hp turbo was the draw. A typically optioned car near $40K, however, bought a cramped, stiff-riding compact that Consumer Reports said fell short of a real Mercedes.
The lineup was CLA 250 FWD, CLA 250 4MATIC and the 375-hp Mercedes-AMG CLA 45, with option packages layered on top. It offered a sensible choice but only one mainstream engine.
In the US the CLA sold in the low-20,000s a year, which made it one of the stronger entry-luxury compact sedans. Volume was declining, however, from its 2014–2015 peak as buyers shifted to the GLA and crossovers.
The three-pointed star is among the most aspirational badges in the US market and was the CLA's core selling point to younger buyers. Some enthusiasts, though, saw the entry model as diluting the brand.
As an aging entry model late in its lifecycle, the CLA drew frequent subvented leases and loaner/demo discounts at Mercedes dealers, which gave buyers real room to negotiate.
MY2018 was the fifth US year of the C117 generation, launched in 2014 and lightly facelifted for 2017. The all-new C118 arrived for MY2020, so 2018 buyers were purchasing an aging design with MBUX-era replacement imminent.
Reviews were mixed. Critics praised the styling, handling and cabin finish, but it was rarely a comparison-test winner, and Consumer Reports criticized its ride, noise, visibility and rear space.
