The verdict
A struggling full-size van, strong on reliability and held back by safety.
The 2018 Ram ProMaster is a purpose-built commercial cargo van, not a passenger vehicle — every 2018 configuration seats just two, with no second row available at any price. For trades, delivery fleets, and camper-van converters it's a strong, affordable choice: up to 462.8 cu ft of flat-floor cargo space, 5,100 lbs of towing, a best-in-class tight turning radius, and a $29,995 starting price that undercuts the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter by about $4,000. But it pairs that capability with essentially no modern safety tech (no AEB, blind-spot monitoring, or lane-keeping until the 2022 refresh), a dated 5-inch infotainment screen with no CarPlay/Android Auto, and real-world fuel economy around 13 MPG. Buy it for what it hauls, not for how it feels to drive or how it protects you on the highway.
Jump to scoresStrengths
- Built to work: strong payload, towing, and cargo volume
- One of the most upfit-friendly vans in its class
- A proven, durable powertrain
What holds it back
- Virtually no driver-assistance safety tech
- Not a family vehicle — there is no rear seat
- Warranty coverage sits at the bottom of the segment

Detailed scoring by subject
1Performance & PowertrainGrades near the bottom of the scale.0.59F
2018 ProMaster's standard and volume powertrain is the 3.6L Pentastar V6, used across the 1500/2500/3500 cargo and window van lineup; unchanged from the 2014 redesign through 2018.
Peak torque figure for the 3.6L Pentastar V6, the volume engine for 2018 (a 3.0L EcoDiesel I4 was also offered this year as a lower-volume option, at 174 hp/295 lb-ft).
Instrumented-estimate aggregator figure for the 280-hp V6 ProMaster; the V6/6-speed drivetrain is unchanged between 2018 and 2019, and period reviewers describe adequate but unhurried unladen acceleration that falls off further once loaded.
Reviewers describe the Pentastar V6 as smooth and quiet with strong unladen pull, but throttle response and responsiveness noticeably diminish once the van is loaded with cargo, keeping it out of the top band.
The 6-speed automatic shifts smoothly and works through its gears without notable hunting or harshness in normal driving, though it is an unremarkable commercial-van gearbox rather than a standout.
5,100 lbs was the ProMaster's max towing rating through MY2018, before Ram's 2019 capability update raised it to 6,800 lbs (a stated 30% increase, which backs out to ~5,230 lbs for the prior rating, consistent with the widely-cited 5,100 lbs figure).
The ProMaster uses an exclusive front-wheel-drive unibody layout across its entire US lineup; no AWD or 4WD has ever been offered on any trim or model year, including 2018.
Low, nose-heavy stance with roughly 6.9 in of ground clearance, no off-road trim, skid plates, or terrain modes — strictly a pavement-oriented commercial van.
For 2018 the ProMaster is available with two distinct powertrains: the volume 3.6L Pentastar V6 (gas) and an optional 3.0L EcoDiesel I4 (174 hp/295 lb-ft) — the diesel's last model year in the US ProMaster lineup before it was dropped for 2019.
2Efficiency & RangeOne of the ProMaster's weakest categories.0.00F
The ProMaster cargo van (volume 2500 configuration) has a GVWR above the 8,500-lb threshold where EPA/CAFE fuel-economy testing and window-sticker labeling applies, so no official EPA MPG figure exists for 2018. Value uses aggregated real-world owner data for the 2018 ProMaster 2500.
No official EPA city figure exists for this GVWR class; estimated from the owner-reported combined average using a typical city/highway weighting split for a heavy commercial van.
No official EPA highway figure exists for this GVWR class; estimated from the owner-reported combined average using an EPA-style weighting split, since Fuelly's combined figure blends in stop-and-go commercial-van use that pulls the raw average down.
No EPA range figure is published for this GVWR class. Computed from the 24-gallon fuel tank capacity (3.6L V6 ProMaster) and the real-world combined MPG average.
No EPA fuel-cost estimate exists for this GVWR class; computed at the standard 15,000 mi/yr assumption using the real-world combined MPG (13.08) and the 2018 US average regular-gasoline price (~$2.72/gal, EIA).
Runs on regular unleaded gasoline with no premium requirement or special fueling complexity.
3SafetyThe ProMaster's lowest-graded category.0.00F
The Ram ProMaster full-size van has never been crash-tested by NHTSA for any model year; querying the NHTSA SafetyRatings API for 2018 Ram models returns only the 1500/2500 pickups and the unrelated, smaller ProMaster City — no ProMaster (full-size) entry exists.
IIHS has not conducted any crashworthiness testing on the ProMaster for the 2018 model year or any other year — the vehicle carries no Top Safety Pick status and no individual test results of any kind, same as the segment's other full-size commercial vans (Ford Transit).
The 2018 model year predates Ram's ADAS rollout on the ProMaster (forward-collision warning only arrived around MY2022). The 2018 Safety and Security lineup in the manufacturer buyer's guide lists only airbags, ESC, Hill Start Assist and a standard backup camera — no AEB, adaptive cruise, lane-keeping, blind-spot monitoring or rear cross-traffic alert are offered on any trim, standard or optional.
No forward-collision warning or automatic emergency braking system was available on the 2018 ProMaster at any price point; the feature was introduced to the lineup years later (~MY2022 per Ram's own ADAS rollout references).
Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert were not offered on the 2018 ProMaster in any form — Edmunds' review explicitly notes the van lacks blind-spot monitoring and recommends optional tow mirrors as the only mitigation, and the manufacturer buyer's guide lists no such system.
No lane departure warning, lane keep assist, or lane centering system was available on the 2018 ProMaster — the manufacturer buyer's guide for the model year contains no such feature on any trim or package.
The 2018 ProMaster offers only standard, non-adaptive cruise control; no radar-based adaptive cruise or highway-assist system was available on any trim.
No hands-free highway driving system of any kind was offered on the 2018 ProMaster, consistent with the complete absence of ACC or lane-centering hardware that such a system would require.
The 2018 ProMaster uses halogen projector headlights with no auto high-beam or adaptive function offered; owner and aftermarket-lighting commentary consistently describes the stock halogen output as dim and the reflector/projector design as outdated, and the van was never IIHS headlight-tested.
The cab-forward van layout with a short hood and large, low windshield gives strong forward sightlines that reviewers single out as a genuine strength, but the passenger-side A-pillar creates a significant blind spot at intersections and the van offers no blind-spot monitoring to compensate, pulling the overall rating down from the top band.
The ProMaster's volume cargo/window-van configurations ship with front seats only and no factory rear passenger seating, so there are no factory-installed LATCH anchors to evaluate; fitting a car seat requires an aftermarket rear-seat installation with no manufacturer-certified LATCH solution, which is a meaningfully worse starting point than a vehicle with usable but cramped factory anchors.
4Space & ComfortGrades near the bottom of the scale.0.00F
The 2018 ProMaster's volume Cargo Van configuration seats 2 from the factory — Ram does not build a multi-row passenger wagon for the full-size ProMaster the way Ford (Transit Passenger Wagon) and Mercedes-Benz (Sprinter Passenger Van) do, so this sits well below even the van norm band floor.
The ProMaster's tall, upright cab (a byproduct of its European Fiat Ducato van-based architecture) clears the van norm band ceiling comfortably.
Front legroom sits below the van norm band floor — the flat-fronted, bus-like cab with a non-tilting steering wheel and forward-stepped pedals keeps the driver's footwell notably tighter than competitor vans.
Unlike the Ford Transit Passenger Wagon or Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Passenger Van, Ram does not offer a second-row seat on the 2018 ProMaster in any body style — the cab is a 2-seat front row only, with the entire remainder of the vehicle an unseated cargo bay. The value above is a nominal floor entry to satisfy the schema; there is no real measurement to report.
Same gap as rear headroom: the 2018 ProMaster has no installed or optional second-row seating in its Cargo Van or Window Van body styles, so there is no genuine rear legroom to measure. Value is a nominal floor entry only.
There is no second row, let alone a third row, in the 2018 ProMaster — the body behind the front seats is a fully open, unseated cargo bay in every configuration Ram builds.
Because no second-row seat is ever installed, there is nothing to fold or subtract — the full cargo bay is usable from directly behind the front seats, placing this comfortably in the upper-middle of the van norm band.
Max cargo volume equals the behind-front-seats figure above since there are no rear seats to fold; the representative mid-size configuration sits in the lower third of the van norm band, well short of the largest 159" extended-body variant.
Competitive but not standout: oversized door pockets, triple center-stack cup holders, dual glove boxes (one lockable as an option), and an overhead shelf system rated to hold 44 lb are all genuinely useful, but nothing here rises to a segment-defining innovation.
Owner and reviewer accounts are split: seats are firm and well-supported for a work vehicle, but several owners describe them as uncomfortable over long stints with limited lumbar support, and the compounding non-tilting steering wheel and stepped-down pedal position undercut overall seating comfort.
Edmunds specifically flags the ProMaster's ride as unrefined even for a work van — the suspension is tuned to carry heavy loads rather than for comfort, so an empty or lightly loaded van transmits many bumps harshly into the cabin.
Owner reports describe a fair amount of road and wind noise in the cabin, consistent with a tall, boxy commercial body with no acoustic glass or extra sound-deadening called out in the brochure beyond the standard cab-back partition's sound-deadening material.
Manually controlled air conditioning is standard (or can be deleted for heater-only), but heated seats require the optional 6-way seat upgrade, there are no ventilated seats or heated steering wheel, and rear climate is only a "Rear Heater Air Conditioning Prep Package" — a wiring/plumbing prep, not a functioning rear system.
5Cost of OwnershipOne of the ProMaster's strongest categories.1.96C-
Entry ProMaster 1500 cargo van MSRP for MY2018, positioned below the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter's $33,995 starting price and above entry Transit.
The 2500 High Roof on the standard 136" wheelbase is the most common fleet/upfit configuration for the ProMaster, sitting between the 1500 and 3500 in the trim ladder.
Industry cost-to-own estimate for the ProMaster Cargo Van; RepairPal separately rates ProMaster reliability 2.0/5.0 (20th of 21 vans), consistent with higher-than-segment repair frequency.
CarEdge's depreciation curve puts the ProMaster Cargo Van at roughly 43% depreciation (57% retention) after 5 years, with lighter 1500 variants retaining slightly more than heavier 2500/3500 configurations.
Standard FCA/Ram Basic Limited Warranty term for the 2018 ProMaster, at the floor of the segment's typical 3–5 year range.
Standard Ram Powertrain Limited Warranty for the gas ProMaster, at the floor of the segment's typical 5–10 year range.
Ram bundles 24/7 roadside assistance for the duration of the 3-year/36,000-mile basic warranty but, unlike some rivals, does not include complimentary scheduled maintenance visits on the ProMaster — basic roadside coverage only, no multi-year maintenance plan.
$35,635 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (57% retained, or about $20,312) leaves about $15,323 in depreciation. Add the projected $6,640 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $21,963 in total.
6Reliability & QualityThe ProMaster's best-graded category.2.19C
Commercial vans fall outside Consumer Reports' and J.D. Power's mainstream predicted-reliability studies, so signal is thinner than for passenger models; third-party fleet-reliability trackers rate the 2018 model year the best in the ProMaster's run, with light owner-complaint volume.
Ram's truck lineup scored well in J.D. Power's 2018 studies, but the brand as a whole (spanning the ProMaster's Fiat-derived commercial-van engineering) sits mid-pack rather than top-tier in multi-year dependability.
The 2018 model year carries two factory recalls (a steering-gear casting defect that could crack and leak hydraulic fluid, and an incorrect tire-placard occupant count) — the steering issue is a genuine safety-system defect even though uptake/injury data was limited. The platform was also later swept into a much larger 2018-2026 cooling-fan-module fire-risk recall (NHTSA, 2025), which weighs on this generation's record even though it postdates the model year itself.
The standard 3.6L Pentastar V6 paired to a 6-speed automatic is a well-proven, widely deployed Stellantis powertrain with a strong high-mileage track record across commercial fleets, though owners report scattered oil-cooler and valvetrain wear issues at high mileage.
A deliberately utilitarian, work-focused cabin: basic cloth seating, hard-wearing plastics, and minimal soft-touch surfacing — appropriate for a commercial van's price and mission but not a strength relative to the broader market.
Build consistency is regarded as solid for the segment, with the Ducato-derived unibody and North American assembly producing tight panel gaps and few rattle complaints, aided by the 2018 facelift's updated fascia and detailing.
Ram/Chrysler's dealer network is large and nationwide, giving the ProMaster broad geographic service coverage, but depth of commercial-van-specific service expertise (vs. a dedicated van brand like Sprinter's Mercedes-Benz Vans network) is more variable dealer-to-dealer.
OEM Mopar parts and a strong aftermarket (NAPA and others) stock ProMaster-specific components, and shared Stellantis powertrain components (Pentastar V6) keep routine parts costs reasonable relative to European van rivals.
7Technology & InfotainmentOne of the ProMaster's weakest categories.0.00F
A 5-inch screen was already small for 2018 and sits well below the van norm band floor — there is no larger-screen option on any 2018 ProMaster trim.
Uconnect 3 is functional and simple with physical buttons flanking the small screen, but the dated, undersized 5-inch display and basic graphics trail virtually every contemporary passenger-vehicle infotainment system, even if it is adequate for a work van's core radio/phone/camera tasks.
Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are not offered at all on the 2018 ProMaster's Uconnect 3 system — that capability did not arrive on ProMaster until the later Uconnect 4 generation (well after the 2018 model year, and ultimately tied to the 2022-2024 refreshes).
A basic Integrated Voice Command system is standard, and the optional Uconnect 3 NAV step-up adds genuine GPS navigation with turn-by-turn directions and points-of-interest — functional but dated compared to contemporary smartphone-based navigation most owners would otherwise rely on.
The only audio system offered is a basic 4-speaker AM/FM setup bundled into Uconnect 3 — there is no premium/branded audio option at all on the 2018 ProMaster, unusual even for a commercial van by this era.
The instrument cluster is analog gauges augmented by a small LED-illuminated Driver Information Display, not a configurable full-digital cluster — a basic trip-computer-style readout rather than a modern reconfigurable screen.
The 2018 Uconnect 3 generation has no over-the-air update capability of any kind — no infotainment software updates, no map updates, and certainly no whole-vehicle OTA, which wouldn't arrive on Stellantis products until later Uconnect generations.
Remote start is offered only as an aftermarket Mopar accessory rather than an integrated smartphone-app feature, and the brochure describes no digital-key, remote-lock, or remote-locate app functionality for the ProMaster — a commercial van this generation was not built around a companion-app ownership experience.
A single front 2.5-amp fast-charging USB port plus a 12-volt outlet is standard, with a rear 12-volt auxiliary outlet optional — adequate for a solo commercial driver but far short of the multi-USB-C, wireless-charging setups becoming common even by 2018.
Remote keyless entry is standard across all trims, but there is no proximity/push-button start, no phone-as-key, and remote start is an aftermarket Mopar accessory rather than a factory-integrated feature — a basic rather than full keyless-convenience package.
A rear backup camera (ParkView, shown on the Uconnect 3 screen with guide lines) is standard across all trims, which is genuinely useful on a large commercial van, but rear parking sensors are optional and there is no 360-degree camera system at any trim level.
No head-up display is offered on the 2018 ProMaster at any trim or option level — not unexpected for a commercial van of this era, but a clear gap versus the item's scoring criteria.
8Use-Case FitGrades near the bottom of the scale.0.83F
There is no second-row seat in any 2018 ProMaster configuration, so there is no LATCH position or rear seating of any kind to install a child or booster seat into — the vehicle cannot serve family-hauling duty in any meaningful sense.
Front driver/passenger, front-seat side, and front side-curtain airbags are standard and ESC is standard, but there is no NHTSA or IIHS crash rating for the full-size ProMaster, and none of the 2018 lineup offers forward collision warning, lane-keeping, or any other modern ADAS — those arrived only with the 2022+ refresh.
With no rear seating at all, the vehicle cannot carry a family of four-plus for a multi-hour trip in any configuration Ram sells — this item measures a use case the 2018 ProMaster is structurally incapable of serving.
Light, low-effort steering, a tight (segment-leading on the shortest wheelbase) turning circle, and the lowest step-in height in the class make the ProMaster easy to place in traffic and parking lots, but an unladen ride that transmits bumps harshly and an uncomfortable, non-adjustable driving position (fixed-rake steering wheel, stepped-down pedals) work against all-day ease.
The full-size gas ProMaster is exempt from EPA fuel-economy labeling at its GVWR class, and real-world owner-logged economy for the 3.6L V6 runs roughly 13-16 MPG combined — expensive for commuting duty relative to any passenger vehicle and below most van/truck peers too.
A best-in-class turning diameter (as tight as 36.3 ft on the shortest 118-inch wheelbase, 41 ft on the volume 136-inch wheelbase) and a standard backup camera help considerably, but the van's sheer footprint — over 80 in wide, up to 100+ in tall — still makes tight urban parking and garage clearance a real constraint.
This is the vehicle's entire reason for existing: payload up to 4,440 lb, towing up to 5,100 lb, up to 462.8 cu ft of flat-floor cargo space, best-in-class cargo width/height, and a 280-hp/260-lb-ft V6 that handles loaded duty well — a genuine top-tier commercial work tool.
By 2018 the ProMaster's FWD unibody architecture was four model years into US production with a 10-Year Corrosion Protection Warranty and a 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty, and Ram tested the platform in extreme hot/cold conditions — reasonably proven for fleet duty, though the front-wheel-drive layout (atypical for the segment) draws some owner-forum concern over long-term driveline wear versus the rear-wheel-drive Transit/Sprinter.
Up to 17 total tie-down points, six roof-rail mounts rated to 330 lb, standard upfit interface wiring connectors, optional auxiliary upfitter switches, and a dedicated Mopar Custom Shop located steps from the assembly plant make this one of the most upfit-friendly vans in the class.
A 24-gallon fuel tank gives reasonable range between stops, and the V6 itself is smooth and quiet, but owner-reported road/wind noise, mixed seat comfort, an uncomfortable fixed-rake driving position, and the complete absence of any driver-assist or cruise-control-adjacent fatigue-reduction tech (adaptive cruise didn't arrive until 2022) make this a poor long-haul companion versus purpose-built passenger vehicles.
The ProMaster is front-wheel-drive only in every 2018 configuration with no AWD/4WD option, modest ground clearance, and no off-pavement-oriented features — it is a pavement-bound delivery/trades van, not an adventure vehicle, though its size and roof-rail capacity do make it a popular camper-van conversion base (a different use case than this item measures).
A fully flat, unobstructed cargo floor (no seats to fold since none exist), up to 17 tie-down points, six roof-rail mounts, and a factory hitch-receiver option give genuinely exceptional raw gear-hauling flexibility, even though it lacks passenger-vehicle conveniences like underfloor storage bins.
9Driving ExperienceGrades below the middle of the scale.1.08D
The front-wheel-drive layout and low floor help keep the ProMaster's center of gravity down for a van of this height, giving it relatively secure, light-feeling low-speed handling, but reviewers note the tall body and load-tuned suspension leave it feeling unsettled and far from composed when pushed, consistent with a heavy-duty commercial platform rather than a car-like driver.
Steering is light and easy to manage in city driving — a genuine asset for maneuverability — but it is numb and gives little road feedback, typical of a hydraulic-assist commercial-van steering gear tuned for ease rather than feel.
Standard four-wheel Brembo disc brakes with a four-channel ABS system, engineered specifically to stop the van plus several thousand pounds of cargo or trailer, give genuinely strong and reassuring stopping power — a well-regarded strength of the platform among owners.
The 3.6L Pentastar V6 paired with the 6-speed automatic is praised as refined and smooth-shifting for a commercial van, with no notable stumbles, tip-in harshness, or rough idle reported.
The same V6/6-speed pairing is specifically called out for being quiet under load, even though overall cabin noise (road/wind) is a separate, noted weak point of the body — the powertrain itself is one of the more refined elements of the package.
Ram markets a best-in-class 36.3 ft turning diameter on the shortest 118-inch-wheelbase model, but the more commonly ordered mid-size 136-inch-wheelbase (2500) configuration scored here comes in at 41 ft, which sits near the worse (upper) end of the van norm band.
High-mounted seats give genuinely good outward visibility, but the steering wheel doesn't tilt and sits in a bus-like, sat-over position while the pedals are stepped down and angled sharply forward versus a car or truck — several owners describe the resulting hunched posture as a real source of driving discomfort.
A tall, front-wheel-drive commercial cargo van with load-tuned suspension and numb steering is an appliance by design, not a vehicle built or reviewed for driver enjoyment — no contemporary coverage frames it as engaging to drive.
10Value & Market PositionOne of the ProMaster's strongest categories.2.06C
Base ProMaster is a straightforward work van — vinyl flooring, manual seats, basic Uconnect — competitive for the price but not loaded; rivals at similar money offer similarly stripped base specs, so it's neither a standout nor a laggard.
Unibody front-wheel-drive layout gives a low load floor and tight turning radius unmatched by rivals, and the ProMaster undercuts the Sprinter's $33,995 starting price by roughly $4,000 while offering comparable cargo volume — strong capability-per-dollar even if outright cargo/tow capacity trails the Transit/Sprinter.
ProMaster spans 1500/2500/3500 weight classes with multiple wheelbases (118"/136"/159"), low- and high-roof heights, cargo/window-van/cutaway/chassis-cab body styles — a wide, well-spaced range from light-duty to heavy commercial use.
ProMaster moved roughly 46,600 units in the US in 2018 — a steady mid-pack full-size van seller, well behind the segment-leading Ford Transit (which outsells it roughly 2:1) but ahead of niche players.
Ram's truck brand carries some weight with commercial buyers, but the ProMaster itself (a rebadged/engineered Fiat Ducato platform) doesn't carry the same halo as Ram's pickup lineup — neutral perception rather than aspirational or detracting.
Commercial/fleet incentive programs (NAHB $1,000 cash allowance, On-the-Job upfit allowances, period national rebates in the $3,000+ range) were regularly available on ProMaster during this era, giving fleet buyers meaningful negotiating room without signaling desperation pricing.
The current ProMaster generation launched for MY2014; by 2018 it is four model years into that generation with no major redesign yet (the next meaningful update — Uconnect/ParkSense additions — lands for MY2019) — solidly mid-cycle, current but not cutting-edge.
Reviewers rate the 2018 ProMaster decently (Car and Driver 7/10) and praise its FWD handling, tight turning radius and low load floor, but consistently flag a noisy cabin, limited safety features and clunky low-speed transmission behavior — well-reviewed but rarely the comparison-test pick over Transit/Sprinter.
