The verdict

A struggling full-size van, strong on value and held back by safety.

The 2020 Ram ProMaster is the full-size cargo van for buyers who care more about price and box size than safety tech or resale value. It starts at $32,940 and can hold up to 463 cu ft of cargo, but it has never been crash-tested by NHTSA, offers no driver-assistance features of any kind until the 2021 redesign, and retains the least value of any major full-size van after five years (about 47%). It's a strong pick for budget-focused fleets, tradespeople, and camper-van conversion builders, and a poor one for anyone wanting modern safety tech or family-hauling flexibility.

Detailed scoring by subject

1Performance & PowertrainGrades near the bottom of the scale.0.14F
Horsepower
280 hp (3.6L Pentastar V6, the sole powertrain across all 1500/2500/3500 configurations)
33/100
#1 of 3 vansCompare all →

2020 is a carry-over year within the single 2014-present US generation, two model years after the 2019 facelift; the 3.0L EcoDiesel option was dropped after 2017-2018, leaving the 3.6L Pentastar V6 as the only engine for 2020.

Torque
260 lb-ft @ 4,400 rpm
35/100
#2 of 3 vansCompare all →

Peak torque of the sole 3.6L Pentastar V6 offered across the 2020 lineup, unchanged since the 2019 facelift.

0-60 mph time
~8.1-9.2s depending on configuration (empty, no payload)
17/100
#1 of 3 vansCompare all →

Ram does not publish an official 0-60 figure for a commercial cargo van; third-party aggregated testing of the unchanged 3.6L V6/6-speed FWD drivetrain clusters in the 8-9 second range empty, lengthening further under payload.

Powertrain refinement58
#3 of 3 vansCompare all →

The Pentastar V6 is smooth and quiet by commercial-van standards with no turbo lag, but reviewers and owners note it can feel strained when the van is loaded near its payload rating, typical of a naturally aspirated six doing truck duty.

Transmission behavior52
#3 of 3 vansCompare all →

The 6-speed 62TE automatic shifts adequately in normal driving but multiple owner reports describe occasional clunky or hesitant low-speed shifts, particularly when maneuvering loaded or at parking-lot speeds.

Max towing capacity
5,100 lbs maximum trailer weight, properly equipped (consistent across 1500/2500/3500 V6 configurations)
59/100
#2 of 3 vansCompare all →

FWD V6 architecture caps towing well below rear-drive van rivals; the rating is the same across body lengths and roof heights for 2020 since all configurations share the single drivetrain.

AWD/4WD availability10
#3 of 3 vansCompare all →

The ProMaster is FWD-only across every trim and body configuration for 2020 (and has been for its entire US production run) — no AWD or 4WD option exists at any price point, unlike the Transit (AWD newly available for 2020) or Sprinter (4WD available).

Off-road capability7
#3 of 3 vansCompare all →

Low unibody-derived FWD van with only 7 inches of ground clearance front and rear, no skid plates, lockers, or off-road-oriented trim of any kind — purely pavement-oriented by design.

Powertrain lineup breadth12
#3 of 3 vansCompare all →

A single powertrain for 2020 — the 3.6L gas V6 — with no diesel (discontinued after 2017-2018), hybrid, or EV option; the battery-electric E-ProMaster did not reach North America until years later.

2Efficiency & RangeGrades near the bottom of the scale.0.11F
Combined fuel economy
~15 MPG combined (estimated; not EPA-rated)
25/100
#3 of 3 vansCompare all →

The full-size ProMaster's GVWR (8,900 lbs) exceeds the 8,500 lb threshold above which EPA fuel-economy testing and labeling is not required, so there is no official combined figure for 2020; real-world owner data for the unchanged 3.6L V6/FWD drivetrain across adjacent model years clusters around 14-16 MPG combined.

City fuel economy
~12 MPG city (estimated; not EPA-rated)
9/100
#3 of 3 vansCompare all →

No official EPA city figure exists due to the GVWR fuel-economy-label exemption; third-party estimates for the 3.6L V6 FWD drivetrain place city economy around 12 MPG.

Highway fuel economy
~18 MPG highway (estimated; not EPA-rated)
25/100
#2 of 3 vansCompare all →

No official EPA highway figure exists due to the GVWR fuel-economy-label exemption; third-party estimates for the 3.6L V6 FWD drivetrain place highway economy in the high-teens.

Driving range
~360 mi (24-gal tank x ~15 MPG estimated combined)
25/100
#2 of 3 vansCompare all →

Derived from the 24-gallon fuel tank (cars.com 2020 ProMaster 2500 specs) and the estimated real-world combined economy above, since no EPA range figure exists for this GVWR-exempt van.

Estimated annual fuel cost
~$2,700/yr (estimated at 15,000 mi/yr; not EPA-rated)
38/100
#2 of 3 vansCompare all →

No official EPA annual-cost estimate exists due to the GVWR exemption; computed from the estimated 15 MPG combined figure at the standard 15,000 mi/yr assumption and a period-typical regular-gas price near $2.70/gal.

Fuel requirements95
#1 of 3 vansCompare all →

The 3.6L Pentastar V6 runs on regular 87-octane unleaded with no premium requirement and no electrified variant to complicate energy needs for this model year.

3SafetyThe ProMaster's lowest-graded category.0.00F
NHTSA overall rating
Not rated by NHTSA
0/100
#3 of 3 vansCompare all →

NHTSA has never crash-tested or star-rated the ProMaster (full-size cargo/commercial van body style, 2014-gen carried through 2020); no overall, frontal, side, or rollover rating exists.

IIHS awards & crashworthiness30
#3 of 3 vansCompare all →

IIHS does not include the full-size ProMaster in its test program — no crashworthiness results and no Top Safety Pick award exist for any model year of this generation.

Standard ADAS suite breadth10
#3 of 3 vansCompare all →

The 2020 model year is a carry-over year with no driver-assistance suite at all — no AEB, no lane keeping, no adaptive cruise, no blind-spot monitoring, no cross-traffic alert are offered on any trim. Ram's press materials promoting Blind-Spot Monitoring with Cross Path Detection, Forward Collision Warning with Emergency Brake Assist, Crosswind Assist and the digital rearview mirror describe the 2021 ProMaster (revealed at The Work Truck Show, March 4, 2020), not 2020 — a secondary source conflated the reveal date with the 2020 model year.

Automatic emergency braking performance5
#3 of 3 vansCompare all →

No forward collision warning or automatic emergency braking system of any kind is offered on the 2020 ProMaster — the feature was not introduced until the 2021 model year.

Blind-spot & cross-traffic coverage5
#3 of 3 vansCompare all →

No blind-spot monitoring or cross-traffic/perpendicular warning is available on the 2020 ProMaster at any trim; large factory mirrors are the only mitigation. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-path detection debuted for 2021.

Lane keeping & centering0
#3 of 3 vansCompare all →

No lane departure warning, lane keep assist, or lane centering feature has ever been offered on the ProMaster through this generation; the 2020 model has none.

Adaptive cruise & highway assist5
#3 of 3 vansCompare all →

Only conventional (non-adaptive) cruise control is available, and it is optional rather than standard on the base 1500 trim. Adaptive cruise control was not introduced on the ProMaster until the 2022 model year.

Hands-free driving availability0
#3 of 3 vansCompare all →

No hands-free highway driving system has ever been offered on the ProMaster; the closest feature, Active Driving Assist (hands-on lane centering with ACC), did not arrive until the 2022 model year and still requires hands on the wheel.

Headlight performance25
#3 of 3 vansCompare all →

Halogen reflector headlights are standard across the ProMaster 1500/2500/3500 range with no LED or adaptive high-beam option in 2020; IIHS has never rated this van's headlights, but halogen-only commercial-van units of this era typically test Marginal.

Outward visibility48
#3 of 3 vansCompare all →

The cab-forward layout and tall, upright windshield give strong forward sightlines typical of the segment, but the split rear door/panel cargo body creates large rear blind spots, and with no blind-spot monitoring available until 2021, drivers rely entirely on large manual/power mirrors to compensate.

Child-seat (LATCH) usability20
#3 of 3 vansCompare all →

The volume ProMaster 1500 Cargo configuration is a 2-3 occupant front bench/bucket layout with no rear seating at all, so there are no rear LATCH anchors to use; only the window-van/passenger configurations with a rear bench offer anchor points, making child-seat installation impractical on the representative cargo trim.

4Space & ComfortGrades near the bottom of the scale.0.54F
Seating capacity
2-passenger standard, optional center jump seat brings the Cargo Van to 3; Window Van is also 2-passenger from the factory
0/100
#3 of 3 vansCompare all →

No ProMaster body style ships with a factory second-row seat in 2020 — the volume 2500 Cargo Van High Roof configuration tops out at a 3-passenger front bench with an optional center jump seat, well below the van norm band floor built around multi-row Passenger Wagon-style rivals.

Front headroom
~43 in at the front seating position (consistent across roof heights since cab height is independent of cargo-box roofline)

2020 is a carryover year for cab dimensions within the unchanged 2014-generation body (the headline 2020 changes were new 136-in-wheelbase cargo configurations and towing capacity, not cab geometry); the tall, upright cab-forward seating position clears the van norm band ceiling comfortably.

Front legroom
39 in
0/100
#2 of 3 vansCompare all →

Below the van norm band floor — the ProMaster's cab-forward layout places the driver close to the pedals and a non-tilt-adjustable wheel, matching reviewer criticism (KBB, TrueCar) of this generation's driving position.

Rear headroom
~41.4 in (published second-row cabin dimension; no factory second-row seat is installed on any 2020 ProMaster body style)
37/100
#3 of 3 vansCompare all →

This figure describes the Window Van's windowed cargo-bay dimension behind the front seats, not an occupied seat — Ram installs no second-row bench at the factory on any 2020 ProMaster configuration, so the number is a cabin-space proxy rather than a true passenger measurement; carried forward unchanged from the same-generation 2021 figure since cab/body geometry did not change between the two model years.

Rear legroom
~35.8 in (published second-row cabin dimension; no factory second-row seat is installed on any 2020 ProMaster body style)
48/100
#2 of 3 vansCompare all →

Same caveat as rear headroom — this is the open cabin-space dimension behind the front seats on the Window Van's windowed body, not a measurement of an installed seat, since no 2020 ProMaster ships with a factory second row; carried forward unchanged from the same-generation 2021 figure.

Third-row usability8
#3 of 3 vansCompare all →

There is no second row, let alone a third — Ram ships the 2020 Cargo Van with a maximum 3-passenger front bench (jump seat) and the Window Van with 2-passenger seating; any additional rows are third-party upfitter installations, not a factory third-row seat.

Cargo/trunk volume
420 cu ft (2500 Cargo Van High Roof, 159-in wheelbase — the volume configuration)
86/100
#1 of 3 vansCompare all →

With no second-row seat ever installed, the full 420 cu ft cargo box is usable space on the volume configuration, well above the van norm band median; unchanged from 2021 since the 159-in/High Roof cargo box geometry did not change for 2020 (that model year's news was the new 136-in-wheelbase variants, not this configuration).

Max cargo volume
463 cu ft (3500 Cargo Van 159-in wheelbase High Roof Extended Body, the largest available 2020 configuration)
61/100
#2 of 3 vansCompare all →

The extended-body 3500 represents the largest cargo volume Ram offered on the 2020 ProMaster, comfortably mid-band for the segment.

In-cabin storage & clever solutions35
#3 of 3 vansCompare all →

Factory cab storage is conventional and reviewers call it below-average for the class — a glovebox, door pockets, dash-top trays and poorly placed low-mounted cupholders that require looking away from the road — with no standout console or underfloor storage innovation documented for 2020; a Driver Convenience package adds a locking glovebox and overhead shelf as the only upgrade path.

Seat comfort35
#3 of 3 vansCompare all →

No instrumented long-haul seat testing was found for the 2020 model specifically, but the basic cloth commercial-grade seats (no power adjustment offered) and the generally critical reviewer tone toward this generation's overall refinement suggest below-average long-stint comfort versus Transit/Sprinter rivals.

Ride quality20
#3 of 3 vansCompare all →

Reviewer sentiment is mixed-to-negative: KBB and Edmunds describe an unrefined, bouncy ride even for a commercial van, while TrueCar characterizes the unladen ride as surprisingly pliant — on balance this generation's ride trails Transit/Sprinter rivals, consistent with the 2021 model year scored on the same unchanged body.

Cabin quietness35
#3 of 3 vansCompare all →

No instrumented interior noise data was found for the 2020 model; inferred from segment norms for a commercial cab-forward van and the generally critical reviewer tone toward this generation's refinement.

Climate & comfort features38
#3 of 3 vansCompare all →

Manual air conditioning is standard and heated seats are available as an upmarket option, but no dual-zone or rear climate control is documented and comfort equipment remains sparse even on upper trims — typical of the commercial-focused lineup, unchanged from the adjacent 2021 model year.

5Cost of OwnershipOne of the ProMaster's strongest categories.0.99F
Base MSRP
$32,940 (1500 Cargo, 118" WB low roof)
80/100
#1 of 3 vansCompare all →

Entry-trim price for the 2020 ProMaster cargo van lineup; lowest of the three competing full-size vans.

Volume-Trim Price
~$38,000 as-equipped (2500 Cargo, 136" WB high roof — the configuration most commercial fleets order)
73/100
#1 of 3 vansCompare all →

The 2500 high-roof extended-wheelbase is the volume commercial configuration; priced from $35,840 before the high-roof/136" WB option added for 2020.

5-Year Maintenance & Repair Cost
~$8,200 over 5 years (above-average for the class)
20/100
#3 of 3 vansCompare all →

Scheduled maintenance runs $500-800/year, but reported transmission and electrical issues push average annual repair cost well above segment norms.

5-Year Resale Value Retention
~47% retained after 5 years — lowest of the three major full-size vans
23/100
#2 of 3 vansCompare all →

Multiple van-comparison outlets rank the ProMaster last for resale among Sprinter/Transit/ProMaster, consistent with CarEdge depreciation estimates in the 43-51% depreciation range (49-57% retention) across ProMaster body styles.

Basic warranty
3 yr / 36,000 mi bumper-to-bumper
0/100
#1 of 3 vansCompare all →

Standard FCA/Ram basic limited warranty term for the gas 2020 ProMaster, matching the industry-typical 3/36 floor.

Powertrain warranty
5 yr / 60,000 mi powertrain
0/100
#1 of 3 vansCompare all →

2020 ProMaster's powertrain coverage is the pre-2021 5/60 term — well short of Ram's later 10-year/100,000-mile truck-and-van powertrain warranty, which did not apply to this model year.

Complimentary maintenance & perks38
#3 of 3 vansCompare all →

No included scheduled-maintenance plan is standard on the 2020 ProMaster; owners get only the baseline 24-hour Sign-and-Go roadside assistance (towing, jump-start, lockout, limited fuel delivery) bundled with the basic warranty period, with no free service visits or charging/connected-service credits.

Effective 5-Year Ownership Cost
$28,340 (≈$20,140 depreciation + $8,200 maintenance)
56/100
#3 of 3 vansCompare all →

$38,000 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (47% retained, or about $17,860) leaves about $20,140 in depreciation. Add the projected $8,200 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $28,340 in total.

6Reliability & QualityOne of the ProMaster's strongest categories.1.42D
Predicted reliability46
#3 of 3 vansCompare all →

No Consumer Reports predicted-reliability score exists for this commercial-van segment; the third-party trackers that do cover it disagree but skew below average, so the 2020 ProMaster sits in the below-average band rather than average/mixed.

Brand reliability track record57
#2 of 3 vansCompare all →

Strong initial-quality showing is offset by Stellantis/FCA brands historically trailing in J.D. Power's longer-term Vehicle Dependability Study, netting a mid-pack brand standing.

Recall & TSB history54
#1 of 3 vansCompare all →

Several NHTSA campaigns touch the 2019-2021 generation the 2020 ProMaster belongs to, including one safety-relevant rollaway risk, which keeps this out of the top band despite no fire or structural pattern.

Powertrain durability reputation54
#3 of 3 vansCompare all →

The 3.6L Pentastar V6 itself has a reasonably proven track record across Chrysler/Jeep/Ram applications since 2011, but the paired 62TE transmission — the same unit subject to the park-pawl recall — is the recurring weak point owners and shops flag, so this nets to a mixed rather than top-tier reputation.

Interior material quality46
#3 of 3 vansCompare all →

Acceptable for a commercial cargo van's price point — durable cloth and hard plastics prioritized for cleanability over soft-touch finish — but behind passenger-vehicle expectations.

Fit & finish42
#3 of 3 vansCompare all →

Recurring rather than isolated owner complaints about assembly consistency push this below the 'generally solid' band.

Dealer & service network57
#3 of 3 vansCompare all →

A large, broad-coverage dealer body gives adequate national access, though the network is less van-specialized than Mercedes' Sprinter or Ford's commercial-van channels.

Parts availability & repair cost50
#2 of 3 vansCompare all →

Routine parts and service are normally priced and widely available through Mopar and third-party channels, offset by one notably expensive wear item.

7Technology & InfotainmentOne of the ProMaster's weakest categories.0.00F
Touchscreen size
5-in Uconnect 3 touchscreen, the sole system offered across the 2020 ProMaster lineup
0/100
#2 of 3 vansCompare all →

Well below the van norm band floor; Ram did not offer a larger screen option on the ProMaster for 2020 — the larger Uconnect 5 setup arrived only with the 2022 model-year update.

Infotainment UX & responsiveness35
#3 of 3 vansCompare all →

Uconnect 3 is a dated, basic generation of Ram's infotainment software running on a small 5-in display, functional for a commercial work van but clearly behind the segment's more modern systems; unchanged from the carryover generation also scored in 2021.

Wireless CarPlay / Android Auto50
#2 of 3 vansCompare all →

Wired Apple CarPlay/Android Auto projection through Uconnect 3 is standard, but no wireless projection is offered on any 2020 ProMaster trim — wireless support arrived only with the 2022 Uconnect 5 rollout.

Voice control & native navigation32
#3 of 3 vansCompare all →

Uconnect 3's voice command handles basic functions adequately but lacks the natural-language capability of later Uconnect generations; factory Uconnect 3 NAV is a dated map-based add-on that most commercial buyers skip in favor of phone-based navigation.

Audio system quality28
#3 of 3 vansCompare all →

No branded or premium audio option is documented for the 2020 ProMaster — base speakers are geared toward basic commercial use with no upgrade path even on upper trims.

Digital instrument cluster10
#3 of 3 vansCompare all →

The 2020 ProMaster uses analog gauges with a small monochrome driver information display rather than a configurable full-digital cluster, consistent with its commercial-van positioning.

OTA update capability8
#3 of 3 vansCompare all →

The Uconnect 3-generation system predates Ram's connected-services/OTA infrastructure; no whole-vehicle or infotainment OTA update capability is documented for the 2020 ProMaster.

Companion app & remote functions15
#3 of 3 vansCompare all →

No embedded modem or app-based remote lock/unlock/vehicle-locate functionality is documented for the 2020 ProMaster; Ram's connected Uconnect app services expanded to the ProMaster only with the 2022 Uconnect 5 update.

Charging ports & device power25
#3 of 3 vansCompare all →

The cab offers a modest pair of USB-A ports near the dash center with no USB-C or wireless charging pad offered; a factory 12V rear cargo-area outlet is available on some builds but overall device-charging provision is basic.

Keyless & remote access20
#3 of 3 vansCompare all →

Remote keyless entry (lock/unlock via a 3-button flip-key fob) became standard equipment for 2020, alongside standard Bluetooth — a step up from being optional on earlier years — but there is still no proximity entry, push-button start, or phone-as-key; those arrived only with the redesigned 2022+ model's smart-key option.

Camera & parking aids35
#3 of 3 vansCompare all →

A rearview/ParkView backup camera became a standard feature for 2020 (previously optional), and ParkSense rear park assist is available as an option, but there is no digital rearview mirror, no 360-degree surround camera, and no automated parking — the digital rearview mirror and blind-spot monitoring options that lifted this item's score for 2021 are new-for-2021 additions that postdate this model year.

Head-up display availability0
#3 of 3 vansCompare all →

Ram does not offer a head-up display on any 2020 ProMaster trim, consistent with the model's commercial-van market positioning.

8Use-Case FitGrades near the bottom of the scale.0.55F
Kid & car-seat practicality10
#3 of 3 vansCompare all →

No ProMaster body style ships with a factory second-row seat in 2020, so there is nowhere to install a LATCH-equipped child seat without third-party upfit work — a fundamental gap versus any purpose-built family hauler.

Family safety package12
#3 of 3 vansCompare all →

No NHTSA overall rating and no IIHS crashworthiness data exist for this van, and the blind-spot monitoring and forward-collision-warning options that arrived for 2021 are not yet available in 2020 — a weak safety proposition for families regardless of price point.

Family road-trip comfort12
#3 of 3 vansCompare all →

With no factory rear seating to begin with, and reviewer sentiment pointing to a bouncy, body-roll-prone ride for this generation, the ProMaster is not meaningfully equipped for multi-hour family travel in any configuration Ram sold in 2020.

Daily driving ease28
#3 of 3 vansCompare all →

A smooth V6/automatic powertrain helps around town, but reviewers describe substantial body roll, steering that lacks on-center feel, and a clunky-shifting transmission, and the volume configuration's 46.8 ft turning circle is among the largest in the class — a tiring rather than relaxing daily driver.

Commuting cost efficiency38
#3 of 3 vansCompare all →

Regular-unleaded fuel and a simple, repairable V6 keep per-gallon costs low, but a real-world mid-teens MPG estimate is mediocre even by full-size-van standards, with no hybrid or efficient alternative offered in 2020.

Parking & maneuverability32
#3 of 3 vansCompare all →

A standard backup camera (new-for-2020 per motorbiscuit.com) and good outward sightlines from the tall, low-beltline seating position help, but the volume High Roof/long-wheelbase configuration's 46.8 ft turning circle is among the widest in the segment — only the shorter-wheelbase ProMaster builds turn notably tighter, and that is not the configuration scored here.

Work capability73
#2 of 3 vansCompare all →

Up to 6,910 lbs of towing, payload as high as 4,550 lbs, and up to 463 cu ft of cargo volume make this a genuinely serious commercial tool, further broadened for 2020 by three new 136-in-wheelbase configurations that fill the gap between the 1500 and 159-in-wheelbase vans — on par with the Transit's work credentials.

Durability for work duty40
#3 of 3 vansCompare all →

Independent reliability scoring places 2020 ProMaster reliability in the middle of the pack, trailing both the Transit and Sprinter in fleet-durability reputation despite the simple, long-serving Pentastar V6/6-speed combination.

Jobsite & upfit practicality68
#3 of 3 vansCompare all →

A low load floor height, wide sliding and rear cargo doors (with an additional sliding cargo door newly optional for 2020), and a mature upfitter electrical interface make this one of the easier platforms to upfit for trade and delivery work, though its upfit ecosystem trails the Transit's larger US dealer/upfitter network density.

Long-distance comfort & range28
#3 of 3 vansCompare all →

A 24-gal tank yields only around 350-400 mi of range at the estimated real-world economy, adaptive cruise control is not offered at any trim, and reviewer sentiment points to a bouncy, body-roll-prone ride for this generation — a poor mile-eater relative to Transit or Sprinter.

Outdoor & adventure capability48
#3 of 3 vansCompare all →

No AWD is offered and ground clearance is low — the ProMaster is among the least off-road-capable full-size vans — but its low, flat load floor and FWD-unibody packaging have made it one of the most popular #vanlife camper-conversion platforms in the US (Winnebago, Wayfarer, Sportsmobile and others build on this chassis), so pavement-bound road-trip/camping capability is genuinely strong even without any off-pavement ability.

Gear & luggage flexibility80
#3 of 3 vansCompare all →

Up to 463 cu ft of flat-floor cargo volume, wide sliding and barn-door rear access (with an additional sliding door now optional for 2020), and a mature shelving/rack upfit ecosystem let this van swallow bikes, luggage, or a full camping load with ease — a genuine class strength even without factory seating to remove.

9Driving ExperienceOne of the ProMaster's weakest categories.0.06F
Handling & agility20
#3 of 3 vansCompare all →

Reviewer sentiment is consistently mixed-to-critical on this generation's body control: TrueCar credits 'solid handling' from the MacPherson-strut front suspension, but the van's tall body produces substantial body roll and sway through corners, trailing purpose-tuned rivals — broadly consistent with the more critical 'wobbly' assessment used for the adjacent 2021 model year on the same unchanged chassis.

Steering feel25
#3 of 3 vansCompare all →

Reviewers describe the steering as light and easy to place in traffic, but multiple sources flag weak on-center feel and vagueness — the same criticism ('loose and numb') leveled at the unchanged 2021 model year — and the non-tilt-adjustable wheel compounds the ergonomics issue.

Braking confidence40
#3 of 3 vansCompare all →

No instrumented stopping-distance test was found for the 2020 model specifically; the factory Brembo-sourced calipers front and rear are a genuinely upscale hardware choice for this segment (unchanged from 2021), but the broader critical reception of this generation's dynamics argues against assuming best-in-class braking without direct evidence.

Powertrain smoothness & response58
#3 of 3 vansCompare all →

The naturally aspirated 3.6L Pentastar V6 and 6-speed automatic deliver smooth, lag-free power typical of this powertrain, but the single engine covering all three GVWR classes has to work harder and feels strained at highway speed when the van is loaded toward its GVWR; multiple owner/reviewer sources also flag the 6-speed as clunky and reluctant to shift.

Drivetrain noise & vibration45
#3 of 3 vansCompare all →

No instrumented cabin noise data was found for the 2020 model specifically; inferred from the shared V6/6-speed powertrain architecture and segment norms for a commercial cab-forward van, expecting audible but not egregious engine noise under load.

Turning circle
46.8 ft curb-to-curb (2500 Cargo Van, 159-in wheelbase, High Roof — the volume configuration); as tight as 36.3 ft on the short 1500 118-in wheelbase Low Roof, with new 136-in-wheelbase variants added for 2020 turning around 40-41 ft
0/100
#2 of 3 vansCompare all →

The volume High Roof/long-wheelbase configuration sits well outside the van norm band ceiling (worse than the segment norm, since a larger turning diameter is worse); only the smallest short-wheelbase ProMaster builds turn as tight as rival cargo vans. This 159-in/High Roof figure is unchanged from 2021 since 2020's news was new 136-in-wheelbase configurations, not a change to the existing 159-in body.

Driving position & ergonomics22
#3 of 3 vansCompare all →

Reviewers explicitly flag the driving position as a weak point for this generation: a top-down view over a flat dash and a long reach to the non-tilt-adjustable wheel for taller drivers, despite otherwise good outward visibility from the tall seating position; consistent with the same unchanged cab used in the adjacent 2021 model year.

Fun-to-drive factor18
#3 of 3 vansCompare all →

Reviewer language skews negative on this generation's driving character — body roll, vague steering, and a clunky transmission leave it well behind rivals like the Transit that at least earn 'surprisingly fun for the class' praise — though it is not quite as uniformly dismissed as the 2021 model year's coverage.

10Value & Market PositionThe ProMaster's best-graded category.1.83C-
Standard equipment generosity52
#2 of 3 vansCompare all →

As a commercial work tool the base ProMaster is spartan — vinyl floor, basic cloth seats, manual windows/locks on lower trims — but that is typical for the segment rather than a deficiency, and backup camera/basic safety tech are standard across the range by 2020.

Feature value per dollar68
#1 of 3 vansCompare all →

The ProMaster undercuts both direct rivals on price while offering the segment's largest low cargo floor and tightest turning radius, making it the standout bang-for-buck pick for budget-conscious fleets and van-conversion builders despite its reliability shortfalls.

Trim & configuration breadth78
#3 of 3 vansCompare all →

2020 added a third wheelbase (136") on top of the existing 118"/159" options across 1500/2500/3500 weight classes and low/high roof heights, plus cutaway and chassis-cab variants — a wide, well-spaced range from light-duty to heavy-duty commercial use.

Sales popularity & market acceptance62
#2 of 3 vansCompare all →

ProMaster sold 50,556 units in 2020 — roughly matching Mercedes Sprinter+Metris combined and comfortably outselling the declining Chevy Express and Ford E-Series — though it remained a clear second/third behind segment leader Ford Transit.

Brand desirability & image50
#3 of 3 vansCompare all →

Ram's truck brand carries some commercial-fleet goodwill via its dealer/service network, but the ProMaster itself (a rebadged Fiat Ducato) carries no distinct image halo and is bought on cost/capability by fleet buyers rather than brand aspiration — a neutral perception overall.

Deals & incentive availability68
#1 of 3 vansCompare all →

Commercial van buyers routinely access Ram's fleet/commercial incentive programs and dealer discounting, which combined with the ProMaster's already-lower sticker price make it a readily negotiable purchase compared to Sprinter's thinner margins.

Model freshness48
#3 of 3 vansCompare all →

2020 is year six of the generation that began in 2014 with no ground-up redesign yet (the next major facelift arrived in Europe for 2021 and the US EV variant/second facelift came later, in 2024) — mid-cycle, refreshed only with added wheelbase options rather than new platform tech.

Critical reception & awards40
#3 of 3 vansCompare all →

Reviewers consistently position the ProMaster as the budget alternative rather than the class winner — praised for cargo space, low floor and maneuverability, but marked down for build quality, reliability, and powertrain refinement relative to Transit and Sprinter; no major comparison-test wins or awards for MY2020.
