The verdict
A struggling full-size van, strong on reliability and held back by safety.
The 2021 Ram ProMaster is a budget-friendly, front-wheel-drive cargo van built for haulers and upfitters rather than passengers — it tows up to 6,910 lbs and can swallow as much as 463 cu ft of cargo, with pricing starting around $35,555. But reviewers call its highway ride and handling the worst in the full-size van class, no model year has ever earned an NHTSA or IIHS crash rating, and 2021 is the last year before the 2022 update that added a 9-speed automatic and standard driver-assist tech. It's a genuinely strong, cheap-to-run work tool and a favorite camper-conversion base, but not a van to cross-shop against family- or comfort-focused rivals.
Jump to scoresStrengths
- Serious towing and payload for a commercial van
- Huge, flat-floor cargo capacity
- Cheap to fuel and cheap to fix
What holds it back
- Worst-in-class ride and handling
- No all-wheel drive, and essentially no off-road ability
- No crash-test ratings and almost no driver-assist tech

Detailed scoring by subject
1Performance & PowertrainGrades near the bottom of the scale.0.55F
The 3.6L Pentastar V6 is the only engine offered across the 2021 ProMaster 1500/2500/3500 lineup, unchanged since the model's 2014 US launch.
Peak torque of the sole 3.6L Pentastar V6 powertrain, identical across all three GVWR classes for 2021.
Ram does not publish a 0-60 time for the commercial ProMaster and no major instrumented test (Car and Driver, Motor Trend) of the 2021 model was found; this is a third-party aggregator estimate consistent with the V6's power-to-weight ratio in a ~5,200+ lb FWD van body.
The naturally aspirated Pentastar V6 delivers smooth, lag-free power typical of an NA engine, but reviewers note it has to work hard and feels strained at highway speed when the van is loaded near its GVWR, since it is the only engine covering all three weight classes.
The 6-speed automatic (dual shift mode) shifts acceptably but is a dated unit next to the segment's 9- and 10-speed automatics (Sprinter, Transit), with fewer ratios to cover the V6's narrower usable power band, especially laden.
Ram raised ProMaster towing from 5,100 lbs to up to 6,910 lbs starting with the MY2019 running change, carried unchanged into 2021; the maximum figure is on the shortest, lowest-roof 1500 configuration and steps down slightly with wheelbase/roof height.
The ProMaster is front-wheel drive only across every trim and configuration for 2021; unlike the Transit and Sprinter, Ram has never offered an AWD or 4WD option on the ProMaster.
No off-road trim, skid plates, or raised-suspension package exists for the ProMaster; its FWD unibody layout and low ground clearance make it the least off-road-capable van in the full-size segment, with no terrain modes or locking differentials offered.
For 2021 the US ProMaster is offered with exactly one powertrain, the 3.6L Pentastar V6 paired to a 6-speed automatic; there is no diesel, hybrid, or EV variant in the US market this model year (the European electric E-Ducato is not sold as a Ram, and the Ram ProMaster EV did not arrive in the US until the 2024 model year).
2Efficiency & RangeGrades near the bottom of the scale.0.55F
The ProMaster's GVWR (8,550-9,350 lbs depending on configuration) exceeds the 8,500 lb EPA passenger/light-truck testing threshold, so the full-size van carries no official window-sticker rating; this combined figure reflects instrumented and real-world testing of the gas V6.
Same EPA-exemption caveat as combined MPG; no official city figure exists, so this uses third-party aggregator estimates for the gas V6 2500/3500 configuration.
Same EPA-exemption caveat; third-party aggregator estimate for the gas V6, consistent across 1500/2500/3500 configurations.
All 2021 ProMaster configurations share a 24-gallon fuel tank; combined with the ~16 MPG real-world combined estimate this yields roughly 384 miles of range, a conservative single-tank figure versus the Transit's optional extended tank.
At the standard 15,000 mi/yr assumption and the ~16 mpg real-world combined estimate, the gas ProMaster burns roughly 940 gallons/year; at a representative ~$2.70/gal regular-gas price for the period this lands in the worse half of the van cost band, similar to the gas Transit.
The sole 3.6L Pentastar V6 runs on regular 87-octane unleaded with no premium requirement, and there is no electrified variant in the US for 2021 to complicate energy needs.
3SafetyThe ProMaster's lowest-graded category.0.00F
The ProMaster has never received an NHTSA overall star rating for the 2021 model year or any prior year of this generation. As a Class 2b/3 commercial van (GVWR 8,900-9,350 lbs on most configs), it falls outside the body styles NHTSA routinely selects for its New Car Assessment Program crash-test battery.
IIHS has not published crashworthiness test results (moderate/small overlap, side, roof strength, head restraints) for the 2021 ProMaster, and it holds no Top Safety Pick designation. IIHS did not begin any commercial-van evaluation program until several years after this model year, so the 2021 ProMaster is simply untested rather than tested-and-passing.
For 2021 the ProMaster's only newly standard safety tech is Crosswind Assist (wind-gust stability, not a driver-assistance sensor feature). Forward Collision Warning with Emergency Brake Assist and Blind-Spot Monitoring with Rear Cross-Path detection are both options, not standard equipment, and there is no lane-keeping or adaptive cruise at any trim level this year.
Forward Collision Warning with Emergency Brake Assist is offered for the first time in 2021 but only as an option, and IIHS has not published front-crash-prevention track test results (vehicle or pedestrian, day or night) for the ProMaster. Scored low for both locked-away availability and the absence of independent verification.
Blind-Spot Monitoring with Rear Cross-Path detection became available for the first time in 2021, offered as an option across both the Window Van 2500 and 3500 configurations and on Cargo versions. It is alert-only with no active braking intervention, and remains optional rather than standard on the volume trim.
No lane departure warning, lane keep assist, or lane centering system of any kind is offered on the 2021 ProMaster at any trim. Ram did not introduce Lane Keep Assist on this van until the redesigned 2022 model year.
The 2021 ProMaster offers only conventional cruise control; Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop & Go and Active Driving Assist (lane centering + ACC) were both introduced for the 2022 model year redesign, confirming they are unavailable for 2021.
No hands-free highway driving system exists for the ProMaster in any model year through 2021; the van does not offer a system comparable to BlueCruise, Super Cruise, or FSD-supervised driving.
The 2021 ProMaster's standard halogen headlights are widely criticized by owners and reviewers as dim and inadequate for nighttime driving, with no automatic high-beam or adaptive lighting system offered; IIHS has not published a Good/Acceptable/Marginal/Poor headlight rating for this model.
Commercial cargo-van proportions give the ProMaster large rear blind zones; owners specifically flag a pronounced passenger-side rear blind spot at angled intersections, with no standard camera system to compensate (a rearview camera is available but not a full 360-degree system).
The ProMaster Window Van does not ship with factory LATCH-ready child seats from Ram; rear seating for the Window Van configuration is commonly sourced and installed by third-party upfitters, making LATCH anchor access inconsistent and far from a turnkey, factory-engineered solution compared to dedicated passenger vehicles.
4Space & ComfortGrades near the bottom of the scale.0.53F
No ProMaster body style ships with a factory second-row seat — the volume 2500 Cargo Van High Roof configuration tops out at a 3-passenger front bench with an optional center jump seat, well below the van norm band floor built around multi-row Passenger Wagon-style rivals.
The ProMaster's tall, upright cab-forward seating position clears the van norm band ceiling comfortably, typical of this body style's low beltline and vertical windshield.
Below the van norm band floor — the ProMaster's cab-forward layout places the driver close to the pedals and a non-tilt-adjustable wheel, matching reviewer criticism of a cramped, awkward driving position.
This figure describes the Window Van's windowed cargo-bay dimension behind the front seats, not an occupied seat — Ram installs no second-row bench at the factory on any 2021 ProMaster configuration, so the number is a cabin-space proxy rather than a true passenger measurement.
Same caveat as rear headroom — this is the open cabin-space dimension behind the front seats on the Window Van's windowed body, not a measurement of an installed seat, since no 2021 ProMaster ships with a factory second row.
There is no second row, let alone a third — Ram ships the Cargo Van with a maximum 3-passenger front bench (jump seat) and the Window Van with 2-passenger seating; any additional rows are third-party upfitter installations, not a factory third-row seat.
With no second-row seat ever installed, the full 420 cu ft cargo box is usable space on the volume configuration, well above the van norm band median.
The extended-body 3500 represents the largest cargo volume Ram offered on the 2021 ProMaster, comfortably mid-band for the segment.
Factory cab storage is conventional — a basic glovebox, door pockets, and a dash-top shelf — with no standout console or underfloor storage innovation documented for 2021; the Vehicle System Interface Module (VSIM) upfitter wiring is a work-tool strength but not a cabin storage feature.
No instrumented long-haul seat testing was found for the 2021 model specifically, but the basic cloth commercial-grade seats (no power adjustment offered) and the broadly negative reviewer verdict on this generation's overall refinement suggest below-average long-stint comfort versus Transit/Sprinter rivals.
Both major review outlets single out the ProMaster's ride as the worst in its class, a direct and well-corroborated weakness rather than an estimate.
No instrumented interior noise data was found for the 2021 model; inferred from segment norms for a commercial cab-forward van and the generally critical reviewer tone toward this generation's refinement.
Manual air conditioning is standard and heated seats are available as an upmarket option, but no dual-zone or rear climate control is documented and comfort equipment remains sparse even on upper trims — typical of the commercial-focused lineup.
5Cost of OwnershipOne of the ProMaster's strongest categories.1.31D
The cheapest 2021 ProMaster is the 1500 Tradesman Cargo Van on the 118-inch wheelbase, Low Roof. It undercuts the volume 2500 High Roof configuration by roughly $4,000.
The 2500 High Roof 159-inch cargo van is the ProMaster's main configuration for commercial upfits and camper conversions, the same role it plays in later model years.
The 3.6L Pentastar V6 and 6-speed automatic are simple, widely serviced components, but RepairPal consistently rates ProMaster reliability and repair frequency below the class average.
A 2021 ProMaster is now at the real 5-year mark rather than a projection. KBB's current resale/trade-in figures against its original window-sticker price put retention near the bottom of the full-size van class, consistent with heavy fleet exposure and factory discounting pressuring used values.
Basic coverage is 3 years/36,000 miles, the segment floor and unchanged across ProMaster model years.
The 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain term sits at the bottom of the band, with a lower mileage cap than some full-size van rivals.
The 2021 ProMaster includes no complimentary scheduled maintenance. Owners get 5-year/60,000-mile roadside assistance; connected-service perks are limited compared to later model years since Uconnect 5 wasn't introduced until the 2022 facelift. That places it in the basic-roadside-only band.
$39,325 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (46% retained, or about $18,090) leaves about $21,236 in depreciation. Add the projected $5,600 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $26,836 in total.
6Reliability & QualityThe ProMaster's best-graded category.1.61D
Consumer Reports and J.D. Power do not publish a predicted-reliability score for the commercial ProMaster line, so this rests on aggregator/owner-complaint trackers, which disagree sharply with each other.
Ram's initial-quality standing was unusually strong for model year 2021, but that measures first-90-day defects, not the multi-year dependability this item is meant to capture, and Stellantis brands have historically lagged on long-term CR reliability despite strong IQS showings.
The 2019-2021 ProMaster generation carries a serious safety-critical recall (park-pawl rollaway risk) plus multiple additional campaigns touching seat belts, lighting and wiring — well above 'typical recall activity' for the generation.
The 3.6L Pentastar V6 is a proven, widely-deployed engine with a genuine high-mileage commercial track record, offset by a known valve-train tick issue under class-action; 2021 paired it with a newly-introduced ZF 9-speed automatic that fixed the prior transmission's rollaway defect but itself carries limited field history yet.
Materials are judged against a commercial work-van price point rather than a passenger vehicle, and reviewers consistently describe the cabin as durable and cost-appropriate rather than cheap outright, with a few thoughtful storage touches offsetting hard plastics.
Owner and forum reports describe recurring assembly complaints — loose trim, rattles, and quality-control misses — that sit below the 'generally solid with scattered complaints' band despite the brand's strong 2021 IQS headline figure.
Coverage is adequate but uneven: dedicated Ram Commercial service centers handle ProMaster well (tall bays, heavy-duty lifts), but not every Ram/CDJR dealer is equipped or contracted to service or stock parts for the commercial van line, so a buyer can't assume any nearby Ram dealer will take the vehicle.
Mechanical parts are inexpensive and widely available because the Pentastar V6 and related driveline components are shared across many Stellantis vehicles, and independent cost-of-ownership data shows the ProMaster undercutting its class on long-run maintenance and repair spend, though some body/commercial-upfit-specific parts can be slower to source.
7Technology & InfotainmentOne of the ProMaster's weakest categories.0.00F
Well below the van norm band floor; Ram did not offer a larger screen option on the ProMaster for 2021 — the larger Uconnect 5 setup arrived only with the 2022 model-year update.
Uconnect 3 is a dated, basic generation of Ram's infotainment software running on a small 5-in display, functional for a commercial work van but clearly behind the segment's more modern systems.
Wired Apple CarPlay/Android Auto projection through Uconnect 3 is standard, but no wireless projection is offered on any 2021 ProMaster trim — wireless support arrived only with the 2022 Uconnect 5 rollout.
Uconnect 3's voice command handles basic functions adequately but lacks the natural-language capability of later Uconnect generations; factory navigation is a dated map-based add-on that most commercial buyers skip in favor of phone-based navigation.
No branded or premium audio option is documented for the 2021 ProMaster — base speakers are geared toward basic commercial use with no upgrade path even on upper trims.
The 2021 ProMaster uses analog gauges with a small monochrome driver information display rather than a configurable full-digital cluster, consistent with its commercial-van positioning.
The Uconnect 3-generation system predates Ram's connected-services/OTA infrastructure; no whole-vehicle or infotainment OTA update capability is documented for the 2021 ProMaster.
No embedded modem or app-based remote lock/unlock/vehicle-locate functionality is documented for the 2021 ProMaster; Ram's connected Uconnect app services expanded to the ProMaster only with the 2022 Uconnect 5 update.
The cab offers a modest pair of USB-A ports near the dash center with no USB-C or wireless charging pad offered; a factory 12V rear cargo-area outlet is available on some builds but overall device-charging provision is basic.
The 2021 ProMaster uses a traditional 3-button flip-key fob for remote lock/unlock; there is no proximity entry, push-button start, or phone-as-key — those arrived only with the redesigned 2022+ model's smart-key option.
A ParkView rear backup camera is standard on both Cargo Van and Window Van, and buyers can add ParkSense front/rear parking sensors and a novel 9.2-in digital rearview mirror (new for 2021) — a genuinely useful option set, though there is no 360-degree surround camera or automated parking.
Ram does not offer a head-up display on any 2021 ProMaster trim, consistent with the model's commercial-van market positioning.
8Use-Case FitGrades near the bottom of the scale.0.53F
No ProMaster body style ships with a factory second-row seat, so there is nowhere to install a LATCH-equipped child seat without third-party upfit work — a fundamental gap versus any purpose-built family hauler.
No NHTSA overall rating and no IIHS crashworthiness data exist for this van, and forward-collision warning with emergency braking is an option rather than standard on any 2021 trim — a weak safety proposition for families regardless of price point.
With no factory rear seating to begin with, and a ride quality both major outlets rated the worst in the van class, the ProMaster is not meaningfully equipped for multi-hour family travel in any configuration Ram sells.
A smooth V6/automatic powertrain helps around town, but reviewers call the handling 'wobbly,' the steering 'loose and numb,' and the volume configuration's 46.8 ft turning circle among the largest in the class — a tiring rather than relaxing daily driver.
Regular-unleaded fuel and a simple, repairable V6 keep per-gallon costs low, but a real-world ~16 MPG combined estimate and roughly $2,530/yr in projected fuel costs are mediocre even by full-size-van standards, with no hybrid or efficient alternative offered.
A standard backup camera and good outward sightlines from the tall, low-beltline seating position help, but the volume High Roof/long-wheelbase configuration's 46.8 ft turning circle is among the widest in the segment — only the short 118-in-wheelbase ProMaster turns notably tighter, and that is not the configuration scored here.
Up to 6,910 lbs of towing, payload as high as 4,680 lbs on the 3500, and up to 463 cu ft of cargo volume backed by a dedicated upfitter electrical interface (VSIM, 54 total inputs/outputs) make this a genuinely serious commercial tool, on par with the Transit's work credentials.
RepairPal rates ProMaster reliability at the bottom of the commercial-van field (2.0/5.0), trailing both the Transit and Sprinter in fleet-durability reputation despite the simple, long-serving Pentastar V6/6-speed combination.
A low 21-in load floor height, wide sliding and rear cargo doors, and the dedicated VSIM upfitter electrical interface make this one of the easier platforms to upfit for trade and delivery work, though its upfit ecosystem trails the Transit's larger US dealer/upfitter network density.
A 24-gal tank yields only around 384 mi of range at the estimated real-world economy, adaptive cruise control is not offered at any trim, and both major reviewers rate this generation's ride as the worst in the van class — a poor mile-eater relative to Transit or Sprinter.
No AWD is offered and ground clearance is a low 6.9 in — the ProMaster is the least off-road-capable full-size van — but its low, flat 21-in load floor and FWD-unibody packaging have made it one of the most popular #vanlife camper-conversion platforms in the US (Winnebago, Wayfarer, Sportsmobile and others build on this chassis), so pavement-bound road-trip/camping capability is genuinely strong even without any off-pavement ability.
Up to 463 cu ft of flat-floor cargo volume, wide sliding and barn-door rear access, and a mature shelving/rack upfit ecosystem let this van swallow bikes, luggage, or a full camping load with ease — a genuine class strength even without factory seating to remove.
9Driving ExperienceOne of the ProMaster's weakest categories.0.00F
Both major review outlets single this out as a weak point: the van feels wobbly through corners and trails the rest of the class in body control and composure.
Steering is directly described as loose and numb by reviewers, with a non-tilt-adjustable wheel compounding the poor ergonomics.
No instrumented stopping-distance test was found for the 2021 model specifically; the factory Brembo-sourced calipers front and rear are a genuinely upscale hardware choice for this segment, but the broader critical reception of this generation's dynamics argues against assuming best-in-class braking without direct evidence.
The naturally aspirated 3.6L Pentastar V6 and 6-speed automatic deliver smooth, lag-free power typical of this powertrain, but the single engine covering all three GVWR classes has to work harder and feels strained at highway speed when the van is loaded toward its GVWR.
No instrumented cabin noise data was found for the 2021 model specifically; inferred from the shared V6/6-speed powertrain architecture and segment norms for a commercial cab-forward van, expecting audible but not egregious engine noise under load.
The volume High Roof/long-wheelbase configuration sits well outside the van norm band ceiling (worse than the segment norm, since a larger turning diameter is worse); only the smallest short-wheelbase ProMaster builds turn as tight as rival cargo vans.
Reviewers explicitly flag the driving position as a weak point: a top-down view over a flat dash, a long reach to the non-tilt-adjustable wheel for taller drivers, despite otherwise good outward visibility from the tall seating position.
Reviewer language is uniformly negative on this generation's driving character — Car and Driver's review was openly dismissive of the ProMaster's road manners — leaving it well behind rivals like the Transit that at least earn 'surprisingly fun for the class' praise.
10Value & Market PositionOne of the ProMaster's strongest categories.1.15D
The base 2021 Tradesman includes standard Crosswind Assist, electronic stability/traction control, trailer sway control, six airbags and hill-start assist, but Forward Collision Warning with Emergency Brake Assist, Blind-Spot Monitoring and the digital rearview mirror are all options rather than standard fitment — essentials that later model years (post-2022 facelift) made standard.
The FWD layout still gives the lowest load floor and tightest turning circle in the class for the money, and pricing undercuts the Sprinter by a wide margin. The 6-speed automatic (pre-facelift) and options-gated safety tech make it a less complete package than the Transit of the same era.
18 wheelbase/roof-height combinations across the 1500/2500/3500 classes, spanning cargo van, window van and chassis-cab cutaway bodies, is wide breadth for body configuration. Trim choice itself is narrower than later years (Tradesman/SLT, no SLT+, no Crew Van, no EV variant), so configuration flexibility outruns trim-level polish.
The ProMaster held a clear second place in US full-size van sales in 2021, well ahead of the Sprinter though still trailing the Transit, with acceptance driven mainly by fleets and the DIY conversion market that had grown substantially by this point.
Ram's truck credibility and a growing camper-conversion following gave the ProMaster real following by 2021, but it carried no premium halo versus the Sprinter and Stellantis/FCA's reliability reputation (RepairPal class-bottom ratings for this generation) weighed on perception.
2021 fell in the pandemic-era inventory shortage, when chip shortages and constrained commercial-van production left dealers with little reason to discount. Contemporary sources reference minimal rebate activity on the 2021 ProMaster relative to the heavy discounting seen in later years once inventory normalized.
2021 is the last model year before the 2022 facelift (9-speed automatic, electric power steering, Uconnect 5, standard AEB/FCW). At this point the ProMaster was running its original 2014 powertrain and interior electronics with no major update since launch, making it the oldest-feeling van in the segment for this specific model year.
Reviewers liked the payload capacity, space efficiency and tight turning radius, but dinged the 2021 specifically for an unrefined ride, an odd driving position, no all-wheel drive, and the lack of standard blind-spot monitoring or automatic emergency braking that rivals were starting to offer. It generally placed behind the Transit in period comparisons and won no marquee awards.
