The verdict
A mixed-report full-size luxury suv, strong on performance and held back by ownership.
The 2018 Tesla Model X was the only all-electric three-row SUV money could buy, and it still drives like nothing else in the class — instant torque, a 5-star NHTSA crash rating, and a 17-inch touchscreen with over-the-air updates. But this is also the Model X's roughest model year for build quality: falcon-wing door glitches, below-average Consumer Reports reliability, and steep resale (about 43% value retention after 5 years) are the real price of being first. Budget for an out-of-warranty repair bill and expect a trip to a Tesla service center now and then, and this is a genuinely fast, quiet, tech-forward family hauler; if you want a trouble-free 3-row SUV you can forget about, look at a conventional gas-luxury rival instead.
Jump to scoresStrengths

- Perfect 5-star crash rating
- Glass-roof cabin with class-leading headroom
What holds it back
- The roughest reliability year in Model X history
- Steep depreciation and a six-figure price tag
- Efficiency and range trail newer EVs

Detailed scoring by subject
1Performance & PowertrainThe Model X's best-graded category.2.77B-
Tesla did not publish an official horsepower figure for the 2018 Model X; 417 hp is the widely corroborated combined output for the 100D dual-motor powertrain, the mid-lineup volume trim between the 75D and P100D.
Combined torque figure for the 2018 100D dual-motor AWD powertrain, corroborated across multiple spec sources since Tesla does not publish an official torque number for this generation.
Manufacturer-quoted 0-60 mph time for the 2018 100D, the volume configuration.
Dual electric motors deliver instant, linear torque with zero lag and no coarse transitions — reviewers consistently cite this as the Model X's strongest performance trait, unchanged in the 2018 model year.
Single-speed direct-drive gearbox on each motor means no shifting, hunting, or kickdown behavior at all — power delivery is continuous from a standstill to top speed.
Tesla's published maximum towing rating for the 2018 Model X when equipped with the optional tow package and standard 20-inch wheels; capacity drops with the optional 22-inch wheel package.
Dual-motor all-wheel drive is standard across every 2018 Model X trim (75D, 100D, P100D), with independent front/rear motor torque apportioning in place of a mechanical center differential.
Adjustable air suspension raises ride height modestly for rough roads, but there is no low-range gearing, locking differential, skid-plate package, or dedicated off-road trim — the Model X is a pavement-oriented crossover despite its AWD.
Every 2018 Model X trim (75D, 100D, P100D) is battery-electric with no gas, hybrid, or PHEV alternative — the trims vary only in battery size and motor tune, not powertrain type.
2Efficiency & RangeMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.39C+
EPA-rated combined MPGe for the 2018 Model X 100D, the volume trim.
EPA-rated city MPGe for the 2018 Model X 100D.
EPA-rated highway MPGe for the 2018 Model X 100D.
EPA-rated full-charge range for the 2018 Model X 100D, the volume trim.
The 2018 Model X 100D's 100 kWh pack peaked at 145 kW on Tesla's V2 Supercharger network as sold; the 150 kW unlock came via an April 2019 software update, after this model year.
Quoted/measured 10-80% charge time for the 2018 Model X 100D on a V2 Supercharger stall at its as-delivered ~145 kW peak rate.
EPA estimated annual electricity cost at 15,000 mi/yr and standard residential electricity rates for the 2018 Model X 100D.
Runs entirely on grid electricity with no fuel-grade considerations; home charging is cheap and the 2018 Tesla Supercharger network was already the most extensive fast-charging network of any EV maker, making it practical to keep charged on long trips.
3SafetyOne of the Model X's weakest categories.1.86C-
NHTSA awarded the Model X a 5-star overall rating with 5 stars in every individual category and subcategory, the first SUV to do so, and reported the lowest rollover and overall injury probability of any SUV tested at the time.
The Model X has never been submitted to or tested by IIHS (no crashworthiness, front-crash-prevention, or headlight data published for any model year), so it holds no Top Safety Pick award and no individual test ratings exist to confirm structural performance; the closely related Model S scored only Acceptable in the small-overlap front test and Poor on headlights in IIHS's 2017 testing, which is the only platform-adjacent data point available.
Automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, lane departure warning and blind-spot alerts are standard on every 2018 Model X, but the active-assist layer that makes the suite feel comprehensive -- Autosteer (lane centering) and Traffic-Aware Cruise Control -- is gated behind the separate $5,000 Autopilot software package, not included on the base/volume configuration.
AEB and forward collision warning are standard and camera/radar-based (AP2.5 hardware), and owner/reviewer reports describe reliable daytime vehicle-detection braking, but IIHS never ran its front-crash-prevention test (vehicle or pedestrian, day or night) on the Model X, so there is no independent superior/advanced rating to confirm nighttime or pedestrian performance.
Blind-spot monitoring is standard across the 2018 Model X lineup, but in this generation it is alert-only (visual warning in the side mirror) with no active steering or braking intervention, and rear cross-traffic alert coverage is more limited than later HW3-era Teslas.
Lane departure warning is standard, but lane centering (Autosteer) only comes with the optional Autopilot package; 2018-era AP2.5 Autosteer was functional on the highway but owners and reviewers at the time still described occasional wander and hesitant corrections compared with Tesla's later, smoother releases.
Traffic-Aware Cruise Control offers full-speed-range operation including stop-and-go, and combined with Autosteer under the optional Autopilot package it was regarded as one of the more capable highway-assist systems available in 2018, though it remains a paid option rather than standard equipment.
No hands-free driving system existed for the 2018 Model X: even with the Autopilot or Enhanced Autopilot options, Tesla's AP2.5 hardware required continuous torque on the steering wheel, and the Full Self-Driving computer (HW3) that later underpinned any hands-free aspirations was not introduced until 2019.
IIHS never rated the Model X's headlights (no test on record for any model year), so there is no independent Good/Acceptable/Marginal/Poor verdict; the only platform-adjacent data point is the related 2017-18 Model S, whose standard headlights IIHS rated Poor, which is the best available signal in the absence of a direct test.
The panoramic glass windshield gives unusually good forward and overhead sightlines, but reviewers consistently flag the thick A-pillars and large roof pillars as creating real blind spots at intersections and over-the-shoulder, and the 2018 model has only a single rearview camera, not the surround-camera system Tesla added in later years.
Second-row LATCH anchors are easy to find and use, but Cars.com/InsideEVs' instrumented child-seat test found the third-row anchors deep-set and buried in stiff upholstery, and the falcon-wing doors on the 5/6/7-seat configurations don't open tall enough to avoid head bumps when loading a third-row seat -- a genuine mixed bag rather than uniformly easy.
4Space & ComfortMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.00C
Tesla offered 5-, 6-, and 7-seat layouts for the 2018 Model X; the 6-seat second-row captain's-chair layout was the car's signature configuration and the one most commonly ordered/marketed.
Glass roof and tall cabin give the Model X segment-leading front headroom, consistent across all 2018 trims (75D/100D/P100D share one body).
Front legroom is on the shorter side of the full-size luxury SUV band, consistent across 2018 trims.
The glass roof panels that run over the second row give the Model X exceptional second-row headroom, at or above the top of the segment band.
Second-row legroom is comfortably above the segment midpoint, aided by the long wheelbase.
Falcon-wing doors ease third-row entry, and the 2018 third row has reasonable headroom/legroom for occupants under 6 feet in the 6-seat (captain's-chair) layout, but the second row doesn't slide far enough forward for easy access, and the seat is described by reviewers as kid- or short-trip-adult territory rather than full adult-usable. The 7-seat bench configuration is noticeably more cramped.
With the third row folded flat, cargo space behind the second row sits at the low end of the full-size SUV band — the captain's-chair second row and sloped rear roofline cost space versus a flat-floor body-on-frame rival.
Maximum cargo with all rear seats folded lands mid-pack for the full-size luxury SUV band; the separate front trunk adds further usable capacity not counted in this figure.
The front trunk (frunk) is a genuine extra storage compartment unmatched by combustion rivals, and the falcon-wing doors open a huge access aperture, but door-pocket and console storage inside the cabin itself was criticized at the time as sparse compared to its price class.
Front and second-row captain's chairs were generally well-regarded for long-haul comfort; third-row seating is firmer and tighter, pulling the overall rating down from a top-tier score.
Adaptive air suspension gives a composed, low-body-roll ride most of the time, but reviewers consistently flagged a firm, choppy ride over broken pavement, especially on the larger wheel/tire options.
No engine noise gives the Model X a quiet baseline at a cruise, but reviewers noted noticeable wind and tire/road noise at highway speed, keeping it from a best-in-class score.
Standard HEPA-filtered 'Bioweapon Defense Mode' cabin air system, heated front and second-row seats, and app-based remote cabin pre-conditioning were all standard or broadly available in 2018 — a genuinely rich comfort-feature set for the era, short of ventilated seats.
5Cost of OwnershipThe Model X's lowest-graded category.0.00F
Entry 75D trim started the 2018 Model X lineup; 100D ($99,000) and P100D ($140,000) sat above it.
The 100D's 295-mile range for a ~$15,000 premium over the 75D's 237 miles made it the configuration most reviewers and buyers gravitated to as the practical pick of the range.
No gas engine service (oil, belts, exhaust) keeps routine costs far below the luxury SUV segment; brakes last longer thanks to regenerative braking, though Model X-specific items (falcon-wing door hardware, air suspension) carry out-of-warranty repair risk.
Retention sits at the low end of the luxury SUV band — heavier depreciation than gas-luxury rivals, driven by rapid Tesla price cuts on new inventory and reliability/build-quality concerns specific to early Model X units.
Standard Tesla Basic Vehicle Limited Warranty for the Model S/X/3 era, in force for 2018-model-year cars.
All three 2018 Model X battery packs (75D/100D/P100D) were ≥75 kWh, which Tesla's pre-2020 warranty structure covered for 8 years with no mileage cap; only the smaller 60 kWh pack (not offered on 2018 Model X) carried a 125,000-mile limit.
No included scheduled maintenance plan came standard in 2018; basic roadside/towing assistance was included for the warranty period. Charging perks were referral-driven rather than automatic: buyers who used an existing owner's referral code got several months of free Supercharging (Tesla replaced the flat $100 credit with 6 months free Supercharging in Oct 2018), but a buyer ordering without a referral got no free charging at all — placing this in the 'basic roadside only, perks conditional' band rather than a true included-maintenance program.
$99,000 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (43% retained, or about $42,570) leaves about $56,430 in depreciation. Add the projected $1,841 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $58,271 in total.
6Reliability & QualityOne of the Model X's weakest categories.0.90F
2018 was one of the worst reliability years in Model X history — Consumer Reports' survey of owners produced an extremely low predicted-reliability score for the model year, driven by falcon-wing door electronics, climate control, and body hardware complaints; Tesla had not yet accumulated enough fleet data for JD Power's dependability study to carry much weight.
Tesla as a brand ranked near the bottom of Consumer Reports' annual reliability rankings in the 2018 survey cycle (domestic brands broadly fell into the bottom half, and Tesla was among the weakest), a pattern that persisted across multiple years of CR and early JD Power coverage.
The 2018 Model X carries roughly nine NHTSA recall campaigns across its ownership life, but none are powertrain-fire-severity events — they are moderate issues (seat belt chime logic, instrument-cluster warning-light font size, a later EPAS steering campaign, and a center-display/NVIDIA Tegra processor failure affecting 2016-2018 units). That display recall in particular caused real owner disruption (loss of speedometer, rearview camera, and climate controls as the eMMC chip wore out) which keeps this out of the top band.
Despite the Model X's body and door troubles, its battery pack and dual-motor drivetrain have a genuinely strong long-term track record — real-world 2018 packs commonly retain ~88-95% capacity well past 100k miles, and drive-unit failures are comparatively rare next to the suspension/door/electronics complaints that dominate the model's reputation.
The pre-refresh (2016-2020 generation) Model X cabin pairs a genuinely premium glass windshield/panoramic feel and strong tech-forward presentation with inconsistent trim-piece tolerances and lower-grade plastics in places reviewers felt didn't match the six-figure price — competitive but not class-leading for a full-size luxury SUV.
This is the Model X's best-documented weakness in 2018: panel-gap inconsistency, door misalignment, paint-spray defects, and above all falcon-wing door malfunctions (false obstruction detection, sensor failures, doors that wouldn't seal or had to be held shut) were widely reported by owners and press for this generation, well beyond normal scattered-complaint levels.
Tesla's network was still thin by legacy-luxury standards in 2018 (378 service centers worldwide) but its mobile-service program was expanding fast and rated very highly by users; overall service-center satisfaction, however, slipped noticeably that year as volume grew faster than capacity — a mixed-to-adequate picture rather than a strong one.
Tesla tightly controls its parts supply chain with no meaningful independent aftermarket for proprietary EV components, and out-of-warranty repairs run high — battery pack or drive-unit replacement in the thousands to five figures, and even routine items like a windshield are unusually costly for the segment.
7Technology & InfotainmentOne of the Model X's strongest categories.2.41C+
The 17-inch center touchscreen was standard across the 2018 Model X lineup and was the largest in the segment at the time, well above the top of the SUV normalization band.
Tesla's 2018 infotainment software was widely praised as fast, logically laid out, and among the best in the industry, with over-the-air improvements keeping it current.
Tesla does not offer Apple CarPlay or Android Auto on any trim, by design, substituting its own native media/navigation stack.
2018 Model X voice commands handled basic tasks (navigation address entry, phone calls, some vehicle controls) but predate Tesla's later, more capable natural-language assistant. Native navigation (Google-Maps-based, with live Supercharger routing) was functional and necessary given the lack of phone-projection, but not class-leading.
The standard system (9 speakers, 200W) is adequate; the optional Premium Audio package (11 speakers, subwoofer, 560W, surround sound) was well-regarded, putting overall audio quality solidly above average for the segment.
A crisp, configurable 12.3-in digital gauge cluster was standard on every 2018 Model X trim — ahead of most rivals that still gated digital clusters to upper trims.
Tesla pioneered whole-vehicle over-the-air updates, regularly shipping new Autopilot capability, UI changes, and performance tweaks to the fleet — the clear benchmark for OTA in 2018.
The Tesla app offered remote climate pre-conditioning, lock/unlock, locate, frunk/trunk release, and Summon, all included at no extra subscription cost in 2018 — rich functionality, though phone-as-digital-key did not arrive until later Tesla models.
Five USB-A ports are spread across the cabin (front console, rear of console, glovebox), a generous count for the era, but factory wireless phone charging was not standard in 2018 — it was one of the most common aftermarket accessories buyers added, indicating Tesla didn't yet build it in.
Proximity key-fob entry, push-button start, and power-operated falcon-wing doors plus power liftgate (openable remotely) were all standard, giving the 2018 Model X segment-leading keyless convenience even without the phone-as-key feature Tesla added to later models.
A rear backup camera and ultrasonic parking sensors were standard, and the car's Autopilot camera/sensor suite fed basic parking assistance (Summon, autopark), but a true photorealistic 360-degree surround view was not yet available in 2018 software.
Tesla has never offered a head-up display on the Model X; the instrument cluster and center touchscreen carry all driving information instead.
8Use-Case FitMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.10C
The falcon-wing doors open a very large, low aperture that is genuinely good for loading kids and car seats without stooping, and LATCH anchors are present in the second row, but the second row doesn't slide far enough forward to make third-row loading with a car seat installed easy.
Automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, and Autopilot driver assistance were standard equipment across the single 2018 Model X trim set (no stripped family-price trim without them), supporting a strong family safety case, though Enhanced Autopilot's added features were a paid option.
Second-row captain's chairs and climate control are comfortable for a multi-hour trip, but cargo space with all seats occupied is tight (14.8 cu ft behind the third row), capping family road-trip practicality versus larger-cargo rivals.
Instant, smooth EV torque, strong regenerative braking that approaches one-pedal driving, and standard Autopilot assistance make the Model X notably relaxing in daily traffic.
Electricity cost per mile is well below gasoline-equivalent running costs for a vehicle this size, even though the Model X's own efficiency (MPGe) lags lighter EVs — a clear commuting-cost advantage versus any gas-powered full-size luxury SUV.
A large footprint and a wide 40.3 ft curb-to-curb turning circle — near the top of the full-size SUV band — make the Model X cumbersome in tight city parking, only partly offset by its camera/sensor suite.
A 5,000 lb tow rating and roughly 1,200+ lb payload are respectable for a luxury crossover but trail dedicated work/tow-focused SUVs and trucks; the falcon-wing doors and low ride height also aren't suited to true jobsite duty.
The Model X is a luxury-oriented vehicle with a history of early build-quality and falcon-wing-door reliability issues; it has no fleet/commercial-duty reputation and is not positioned or built for hard work use.
There is no meaningful work-oriented equipment (tie-downs, washable surfaces, upfit ecosystem), and the falcon-wing doors are a liability rather than an asset around jobsite obstacles and low clearances.
EPA range of 237-295 miles depending on trim, a quiet, torque-smooth cruise, and standard Autopilot for highway fatigue reduction make the Model X a strong long-distance companion, backed by Tesla's Supercharger network which was well-built-out by 2018.
Standard all-wheel drive and adjustable air suspension give the Model X reasonable capability on gravel roads and light trails and a 5,000 lb tow rating for small trailers/boats, but it has no low-range or genuine off-road pretension like body-on-frame rivals.
The 6-seat captain's-chair layout (the volume configuration) doesn't fold flat the way a bench second row does, cutting into maximum gear-hauling flexibility versus the fold-flat 5-/7-seat bench alternative, though the separate frunk adds some flexible extra space.
9Driving ExperienceOne of the Model X's strongest categories.2.51C+
Despite curb weight near 5,500 lbs, the low center of gravity from the floor-mounted battery gives the Model X surprisingly composed, low-body-roll handling for an SUV, even if it doesn't feel genuinely agile.
Steering is accurate and well-weighted with selectable effort modes, but reviewers consistently describe it as numb, lacking real road feedback.
Instrumented 60-0 mph stops were adequate (Edmunds measured 111 ft on sport tires) but Consumer Reports flagged a longer 127 ft result, and the vehicle's heavy weight was a recurring concern among testers for brake fade and stopping distance versus lighter rivals.
The dual-motor electric powertrain delivers instant, seamless torque with none of the hesitation, shift-shock, or stop-start roughness of combustion rivals — a genuine segment-best for drivability.
The electric motors are near-silent under most conditions, though some owners and reviewers noted a faint high-pitched motor whine under hard acceleration — a minor, not objectionable, characteristic.
At 40.3 ft, the Model X's turning circle sits beyond the top (worst) end of the SUV normalization band, reflecting its long wheelbase and large footprint.
A high seating position gives commanding sightlines, and the falcon-wing doors make ingress/egress unusually easy despite the low roofline; control layout is simplified onto the touchscreen, which is a minor ergonomic tradeoff.
Instant torque and genuinely quick acceleration (P100D does 0-60 in 2.9 sec) make the Model X entertaining in a straight line, even though its weight and SUV character keep it from feeling like a true driver's car.
10Value & Market PositionMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.39C+
Even the base 75D included items rivals charge extra for: adaptive air suspension, standard AWD (dual motor), navigation with live traffic, LED headlights, heated front seats, keyless entry, power Falcon Wing doors, and forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking as standard safety kit. Enhanced Autopilot and Full Self-Driving were still a notable extra-cost option, which keeps this just short of the top band.
The Model X was unmatched in 2018 as the only all-electric 3-row SUV, giving it real differentiated capability (instant torque, falcon doors, towing up to a segment-leading rating), but its $84K-$140K price band, below-average reliability reputation, and mediocre interior fit/finish for the price keep it from standout bang-for-buck versus established gas luxury 3-row rivals.
Three well-spaced trims (75D/100D/P100D, $84K-$140K) covered entry-to-performance needs, and 5/6/7-seat layouts added real configuration flexibility, but every trim was AWD-only with no lower-cost single-motor or non-performance option, leaving a real gap versus rivals offering a broader price ladder.
~23,900-27,250 US units in 2018 was competitive with established gas-powered 3-row luxury SUVs (Audi Q7, Volvo XC90), and the Model X held the title of the only electric SUV on the market all year, giving it an effective category-leader position even without direct EV competition.
Tesla carried a strong aspirational halo in 2018 — long waitlists, intense media coverage, and a loyal owner base that actively evangelized the brand (the referral program itself traded on this) — despite well-publicized production and quality-control controversies.
Tesla's fixed, no-haggle pricing meant essentially no dealer-style discounting, but 2018 buyers who took delivery by December 31 still qualified for the full $7,500 federal EV tax credit (phase-out began Jan 1, 2019), plus referral-driven free Supercharging — real buyer benefit, but not the kind of negotiable or self-initiated 'deal' this item rewards at the top of the band.
2018 sits mid-cycle in the single generation that began with 2016 deliveries (per Wikipedia/registry production data) — current and still the only EV in its class, but without the major mid-cycle refresh (new interior, updated Autopilot hardware, revised suspension) that arrived for 2021; no redesign was imminent as of 2018.
Reviewers praised the 2018 Model X's efficiency, performance, and perfect 5-star NHTSA crash rating (five stars overall and in every sub-category), and it set a Guinness World Record for heaviest tow by an EV; but it was not a mainstream comparison-test or 10Best winner (SUVs largely excluded from those awards) and reliability/build-quality criticism tempered otherwise strong reviews (Edmunds 7.6/10, Car Connection 7.7/10).
