The verdict

A mixed-report mid-size sedan, strong on efficiency and held back by technology.

The 2018 Camry Hybrid LE was the first year of an all-new generation, and it got the basics very right: 52 MPG combined, a 676-mile range, five-star NHTSA crash ratings, IIHS Top Safety Pick+ and Toyota's strong reliability record. It is a smart, low-stress used buy for anyone who mostly cares about running costs and dependability. The trade-offs are an outdated cabin: a 7-inch screen with no Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, no AWD, and only 208 hp. Buyers who want modern tech or a more engaging drive should look at a 2019-or-later Camry or a Honda Accord.

Detailed scoring by subject

1Performance & PowertrainOne of the Camry's weakest categories.0.60F
Horsepower
208 hp net (Hybrid LE/SE/XLE, THS II 2.5L + motor); gas 2.5L 203–206 hp, 3.5L V6 301 hp
20/100
#2 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

2018 is the launch year of the eighth-generation (XV70) Camry on the GA-K platform, an all-new change year rather than a carry-over. The scored hybrid uses a new 2.5L Dynamic Force four tuned to 176 hp plus a 118-hp motor for 208 hp net — modest against the sedan band, with the 301-hp V6 being the lineup's top output.

Torque
163 lb-ft (engine peak; Toyota does not publish combined system torque); motor adds up to 149 lb-ft; V6 267 lb-ft
13/100
#6 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Toyota quotes only the engine's 163 lb-ft and the motor's 149 lb-ft separately, not a combined system figure, so the engine peak is recorded (matching how later Camry Hybrid years are recorded). The electric motor's instant torque makes it feel stronger off the line than this number suggests.

0–60 mph time
7.5 s (Hybrid, instrumented); tests range 7.2–7.9 s; V6 ~5.8 s
31/100
#2 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Toyota publishes no 0–60 claim; instrumented tests of the 2018 hybrid spread from 7.2 to 7.9 s, so the midpoint Edmunds figure of 7.5 s is used. That is roughly half a second quicker than the gas four-cylinder Camry — unusually, the economy model is not the slow one.

Powertrain refinement74
#2 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

The new-generation THS II with the Dynamic Force 2.5L is a clear step up from the XV50 hybrid: EV-to-engine transitions are seamless and the motor fills in low-speed response, though the engine still becomes audible and drony when pushed hard. Upper half of the 50–79 band.

Transmission behavior74
#2 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

The hybrid's power-split eCVT never hunts or shift-shocks and responds quickly, and Sport mode adds six simulated steps via the shifter; the trade-off is the rubber-band rev flare characteristic of the design under full throttle.

AWD/4WD availability10
#3 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

The 2018 Camry was front-wheel drive only across every grade and powertrain; AWD did not arrive on the XV70 until the 2020 model year (gas four-cylinder), and the hybrid did not get AWD in this generation at all.

Powertrain lineup breadth80
#1 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Three genuinely distinct powertrains — 2.5L four, 301-hp 3.5L V6 and the 208-hp hybrid in three grades — is the broadest choice in the 2018 mid-size class, meeting the 80+ bar; no PHEV/EV and no AWD keep it at the floor of that band.

2Efficiency & RangeThe Camry's best-graded category.4.00A+
Combined fuel economy
52 MPG combined (Hybrid LE); 46 MPG Hybrid SE/XLE
100/100
#1 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

The 2018 Hybrid LE, the lightest and most efficiency-focused grade, matched the Prius-class 52 MPG combined — a big jump over the previous-generation Camry Hybrid. SE/XLE grades drop to 46 MPG on their heavier, bigger-wheel spec.

City fuel economy
51 MPG city (Hybrid LE); 44 MPG Hybrid SE/XLE
100/100
#1 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

City driving is where the power-split hybrid shines, with frequent EV running and regenerative braking delivering 51 MPG — nearly double the gas four's 28 MPG city.

Highway fuel economy
53 MPG highway (Hybrid LE); 47 MPG Hybrid SE/XLE
100/100
#1 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Unusually for a hybrid, the LE's highway figure is even higher than its city rating, a product of the Atkinson-cycle Dynamic Force engine's efficiency at cruise.

Driving range
676 mi (Hybrid LE, 13.0-gal tank); 598 mi Hybrid SE/XLE
100/100
#1 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Despite a smaller 13-gallon tank than the gas Camry's, 52 MPG stretches the Hybrid LE to an EPA total range of 676 miles — well above the mid-size norm.

Estimated annual fuel cost
$1,300/yr (Hybrid LE, EPA 15k mi/yr, regular); $1,450 Hybrid SE/XLE
86/100
#1 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

At EPA's current reference price and 15,000 miles a year, the Hybrid LE costs about $800 a year less to fuel than the gas four-cylinder Camry ($2,100).

Fuel requirements92
#3 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Every 2018 Camry Hybrid grade runs on 87-octane regular, with no plug or charging to manage — fuel is as cheap and universally available as it gets.

3SafetyGrades above the middle of the scale.2.70B-
NHTSA overall rating
5 stars overall (5 frontal / 5 side / 5 side pole / 5 rollover, 9.9% rollover risk; Camry Hybrid FWD)
100/100
#1 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

NHTSA rates the 2018 Camry Hybrid 5 stars overall with five stars in every sub-test — driver and passenger frontal, side barrier, side pole and rollover — and the gas 4-door FWD carries the same rating.

IIHS awards & crashworthiness78
#4 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

The redesigned 2018 Camry earned IIHS Top Safety Pick+ with Good ratings in driver- and passenger-side small overlap, moderate overlap, the original side test, roof strength and head restraints — every crash test in force at the time. It sits just under the top band because the award applies only to cars with specific headlights, and because IIHS's later updated side test, which covers 2018 cars built before the February 2023 structural revision, rates it Poor (structure Acceptable, driver torso and pelvis Marginal) — a real side-impact weakness by today's standard.

Standard ADAS suite breadth66
#2 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Toyota Safety Sense P is standard on every 2018 Camry, including the volume LE Hybrid: Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection, Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist and Automatic High Beams — broad standard content for a 2018 mid-size sedan. But Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert is standard only on XLE/XSE (and Hybrid XLE); on the LE Hybrid it is optional and package-gated, and there is no lane centering at any trim. Core features standard with BSM optional on the volume trim puts it in the middle band.

Automatic emergency braking performance75
#3 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

The standard Pre-Collision System earned IIHS's top Superior rating in vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention, avoiding a collision outright in both the 12 mph and 25 mph tests. IIHS had not yet begun rating pedestrian AEB for the 2018 model year, so there is no day or night pedestrian result to credit despite the system's pedestrian detection, which keeps it below the 2021+ cars that are Superior across all three evaluations.

Blind-spot & cross-traffic coverage52
#4 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert is alert-only (no braking or steering intervention, no safe-exit alert) and is standard only on XLE/XSE; on the volume LE Hybrid it is an option tied to other packages, so many volume cars have none. Available on most trims but alert-only and not standard where the volume is puts it at the bottom of the mid band.

Lane keeping & centering45
#4 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

The 2018 Camry has Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist standard on every trim, which nudges the car back when it drifts over a line — but no lane centering. Lane Tracing Assist did not arrive on the Camry until TSS 2.5+ for 2021, so the 2018 car offers departure prevention only, which is basic lane assistance rather than centering.

Adaptive cruise & highway assist62
#2 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control with stop-and-go is standard on every 2018 Camry, including the LE Hybrid — unusual breadth for the class at the time, and reviewers found it smooth at holding gaps. But it pairs with departure-only lane assist, not centering, so there is no integrated highway assist; capable ACC with no steering layer sits mid-band.

Hands-free driving availability10
#1 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

No hands-free driving of any kind is offered on the 2018 Camry at any trim or price; the car does not even offer lane centering.

Headlight performance63
#1 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

All three IIHS-tested variations are LED projectors with standard high-beam assist, but only the Hybrid XLE with the optional Adaptive Headlights package rates Good. The volume LE Hybrid's headlights (shared with L/LE/SE/Hybrid SE) rate Acceptable, as do the XLE/XSE units; the Good variation itself is let down by inadequate low-beam reach on the gradual left curve, and none exceeded glare limits.

Outward visibility62
#3 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

The new XV70's lower cowl gives good forward sightlines, but its high beltline, steeply raked rear glass and thick C-pillars leave real rear-quarter blind zones. A backup camera is standard, yet on the volume LE Hybrid blind-spot monitoring is optional and no 360-degree camera is offered on that trim, so the compensation is thin.

Child-seat (LATCH) usability80
#3 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

IIHS rates LATCH ease of use Good+ for the 2018 Camry: both outboard positions have complete, easy-to-use hardware and the center seat can borrow lower anchors, giving extra usable positions. Limits are packaging — three seats across a mid-size sedan bench is tight and rear-facing seats cost front legroom.

4Space & ComfortMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.65C+
Seating capacity
5 seats (2+3) on all Hybrid grades (LE, SE, XLE)
100/100
#1 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

The 2018 Camry Hybrid LE is a five-seat mid-size sedan with a 60/40-split folding rear bench. That puts it at the top of the 4–5 seat sedan band.

Front headroom
38.3 in (about 37.6 in with the available moonroof)
57/100
#5 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

With no moonroof, which is the Hybrid LE's standard configuration, front headroom is 38.3 in. That is mid-pack in the 36–40 in sedan band. 2018 is the first year of the XV70 generation, which has a lower roofline than the XV50 it replaced.

Front legroom
42.1 in (all trims)
53/100
#5 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Front legroom of 42.1 in is average for a mid-size sedan and is the same on gas and hybrid models.

Rear headroom
38.0 in second row
75/100
#2 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

On paper the rear seat has 38.0 in of headroom, near the top of the 35–39 in band. Consumer Reports notes, though, that the lower XV70 roofline makes taller rear passengers duck to get in.

Rear legroom
38.0 in second row
60/100
#4 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Rear legroom of 38.0 in is fine for adults but trails the 2018 Honda Accord's 40.4 in. Moving the hybrid battery under the rear seat on the TNGA-K platform cost no passenger room.

Cargo/trunk volume
15.1 cu ft trunk (same as gas Camry; previous-gen hybrid had 13.1)
51/100
#6 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

The 15.1 cu ft trunk now matches the gas Camry because the battery moved under the rear seat. The rear seat folds 60/40, but the trunk trails the Accord's 16.7 cu ft.

In-cabin storage & clever solutions58
#2 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Everyday storage is conventional and competent: a covered console bin, door pockets, cupholders and a tray ahead of the shifter. The LE has only one USB port up front and lacks standard Qi charging, and nothing about the packaging is especially clever.

Seat comfort72
#3 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Reviewers call the front seats spacious and well padded for long drives, and the LE has a standard power driver's seat. The rear seat is comfortable once you are in, but the low roofline makes getting in awkward for taller adults.

Ride quality78
#1 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

The new multilink/double-wishbone rear suspension and 16-inch wheels with tall sidewalls give the Hybrid LE a supple, well-controlled ride that soaks up bumps. It is among the better-riding mainstream mid-size sedans.

Cabin quietness70
#1 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Toyota added extensive foam damping and underfloor vibration-damping coating, and reviewers find the cabin quiet at cruise. Under hard acceleration the 2.5L engine gets raspy as the eCVT holds high rpm.

Climate & comfort features62
#2 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Heated front seats are optional on the LE and standard on the XLE. Ventilated seats are limited to the top grades, and there is no rear climate zone. Climate control is automatic, with dual-zone on the upper grades.

5Cost of OwnershipMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.68C+
Base MSRP
$24,380 (L 2.5L gas incl. $885 DPH; $23,495 before freight) — Camry Hybrid LE opens at $28,685
93/100
#4 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

2018 is the launch year of the eighth-generation (XV70) Camry on the TNGA GA-K platform, and prices rose a few hundred dollars over the outgoing XV50 as Toyota Safety Sense P became standard. The ladder still opens near the bottom of the mid-size sedan band; the scored hybrid's entry grade sits $4,305 above the gas L.

Volume-Trim Price
$28,685 (Hybrid LE incl. $885 DPH); Hybrid SE $30,385 · Hybrid XLE $33,135
86/100
#4 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

This scorecard describes the hybrid, and the Hybrid LE is its volume grade — the 52-MPG configuration with the lithium-ion pack that most retail and fleet hybrid buyers chose. The whole three-grade hybrid ladder stays in the lower half of the sedan band.

5-Year Maintenance & Repair Cost
≈$4,600 over 5 years, maintenance + repair combined (source range ~$3,000–$6,500 by methodology)
68/100
#2 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

The new fourth-generation Toyota hybrid system (A25A-FXS + e-CVT) has no conventional transmission, starter or alternator to wear and regenerative braking spares the pads, and ToyotaCare removes the first two years of scheduled service. As a first-year generation it carried slightly more early-build risk than later XV70 years, so this sits a touch above the 2022 estimate.

5-Year Resale Value Retention
≈60% of MSRP retained at 5 years (Hybrid LE; gas Camry a few points higher)
83/100
#1 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Toyota's resale strength carries to the Camry Hybrid, which depreciates a little faster than the gas Camry but better than the hybrid mid-size average; 2018 cars also turned five into the 2022–23 used-price spike. Even at eight years old KBB values the car at about 55% of its delivered price.

Basic warranty
3 yr / 36,000 mi bumper-to-bumper (5 yr / unlimited mi corrosion perforation)
0/100
#2 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Toyota's 36-month/36,000-mile basic coverage is the industry floor, level with Honda and Nissan but two years short of Hyundai and Kia.

Powertrain warranty
5 yr / 60,000 mi powertrain; hybrid-related components incl. traction battery 8 yr / 100,000 mi
0/100
#2 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

The headline powertrain term is Toyota's standard 5 years/60,000 miles, the segment floor against Hyundai/Kia's 10/100. The hybrid adds 8-year/100,000-mile coverage on hybrid components including the battery; the 10-year/150,000-mile battery term only arrived with MY2020.

Complimentary maintenance & perks64
#2 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

ToyotaCare covers every factory-scheduled service for 2 years/25,000 miles plus 2 years of unlimited-mileage roadside assistance, which Nissan and the domestics did not match. The 2018's Entune 3.0 added Scout GPS Link and, on higher grades, Safety Connect/Remote Connect trials, but there were no fuel or other credits — solid mid-band.

Effective 5-Year Ownership Cost
$16,074 (≈$11,474 depreciation + $4,600 maintenance)
85/100
#2 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

$28,685 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (60% retained, or about $17,211) leaves about $11,474 in depreciation. Add the projected $4,600 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $16,074 in total.

6Reliability & QualityOne of the Camry's strongest categories.3.65A-
Predicted reliability86
#1 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

2018 was the launch year of the XV70 generation, which brought an all-new GA-K platform and an all-new A25A-FXS hybrid engine, so it carries more first-year risk than the carry-over years that followed. Even so, both major sources rate it above average. The one blemish is that in the J.D. Power 2021 VDS, which measured 2018 model-year cars at three years, the midsize-car award went to the Kia Optima, not the Camry.

Brand reliability track record89
#1 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Over the 2018–2021 ownership window, Toyota sat consistently near the top of Consumer Reports' brand reliability rankings, just behind Lexus, and among the top mass-market brands in J.D. Power's VDS. It does not lead the mass-market VDS every year.

Recall & TSB history74
#1 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

As a launch year, the 2018 Camry has the busiest recall record of the XV70 run, with eight NHTSA campaigns. Several are serious: Denso low-pressure fuel pump stalls and brake vacuum-pump failures. Most target the gas I4 or V6 hardware, though. The V6 fuel-pipe, I4 oversize-piston and vacuum-pump campaigns do not describe the hybrid's drivetrain or its electric brake booster, so the scored Hybrid's actual exposure is lighter than the headline count.

Powertrain durability reputation90
#1 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

2018 introduced the A25A-FXS 2.5L Atkinson engine with an eCVT. The engine was new that year, but the drivetrain is the latest step in the Toyota Hybrid System lineage, which has a two-decade high-mileage taxi and fleet record. The eCVT has no clutches, belts or torque converter. Points come off for first-year-engine uncertainty and the A25A family's later EGR-clogging complaints.

Interior material quality63
#3 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

The new XV70 cabin was a clear step up from the XV50, with a sweeping asymmetric dash and stitched soft-touch accents. Reviewers still noted hard plastics in the volume LE Hybrid and ranked the Accord ahead at the same price.

Fit & finish76
#2 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Assembly at Georgetown, Kentucky was generally solid. First-year XV70 builds drew more owner complaints about wind noise, squeaks and rattles than later years, and a manufacturing-defect recall (oversize pistons) points to early-launch production variance.

Dealer & service network88
#1 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Toyota has about 1,200+ US dealers, the densest non-domestic network, and every store services hybrids routinely. Service satisfaction is good, though not the mass-market leader.

Parts availability & repair cost88
#1 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Parts are abundant and cheap. The XV70 Camry was one of America's best-selling cars, and the A25A family is shared with the RAV4 Hybrid and ES 300h. The hybrid's inverter and traction battery are a costlier out-of-warranty tail, but remanufactured packs are widely available.

The volume Hybrid LE has a 7-inch Entune 3.0 touchscreen, and the 8-inch screen is reserved for the upper grades. Both sit at the bottom of the modern sedan band.

Infotainment UX & responsiveness52
#5 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Entune 3.0 has easy physical knobs and buttons alongside the screen. The software itself is dated and laggy, and it relies on app-based Scout GPS Link for navigation on the LE.

Wireless CarPlay / Android Auto10
#6 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

No 2018 Camry offers Apple CarPlay or Android Auto in any form. Toyota added CarPlay for 2019 and Android Auto for 2020.

Voice control & native navigation42
#3 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

On the LE, navigation is Scout GPS Link projected from a phone app, and embedded navigation is limited to the upper-grade Audio Plus/Premium units. With no CarPlay or Android Auto to fall back on, basic voice recognition and Siri Eyes Free are the main voice controls.

Audio system quality62
#2 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

The base six-speaker system is adequate. A 9-speaker JBL premium system with Clari-Fi is available, but only on the upper grades.

Digital instrument cluster50
#2 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

The cluster pairs analog gauges with a multi-information display, which grows to 7 inches on the upper grades. No grade gets a full digital cluster.

OTA update capability15
#4 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

There are no over-the-air vehicle updates. Entune 3.0 software and map updates require a dealer visit or USB, and app content is fed from the cloud only through the phone.

Companion app & remote functions45
#4 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Remote Connect (remote start, door lock/unlock, vehicle status, guest driver monitor and vehicle finder) is available but tied to the upper Entune Audio Plus/Premium units and a trial subscription. Safety Connect is a 3-year trial, and there is no digital key.

Charging ports & device power40
#4 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

The LE has a single USB-A media port plus 12V outlets, with more charge ports on upper trims. Qi wireless charging is optional, and there is no USB-C or AC outlet.

Keyless & remote access62
#2 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Proximity Smart Key with push-button start is standard on the Hybrid LE. Remote start is available only through the subscription-based Remote Connect, and there is no phone-as-key.

Camera & parking aids55
#2 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

The Hybrid LE has only a standard backup camera. Parking sensors and the Bird's Eye View 360-degree camera with Perimeter Scan are confined to top-grade packages, and there is no automated parking.

Head-up display availability58
#1 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

A large 10-inch color head-up display is available but limited to the top XLE/XSE packages. It is not offered on the volume LE.

8Use-Case FitOne of the Camry's weakest categories.1.84C-
Kid & car-seat practicality60
#4 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

The rear seat is roomy enough for rear-facing seats, and the 15.1 cu ft trunk takes a stroller. The lower XV70 roofline makes leaning in to buckle kids more awkward than in an SUV.

Family safety package82
#2 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Every 2018 Camry has Toyota Safety Sense P as standard: automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, full-speed radar cruise, lane departure alert with steering assist and auto high beams. It also has 10 airbags. Blind-spot monitoring costs extra on the LE.

Family road-trip comfort62
#2 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

A compliant ride, a quiet cruise and roughly 600+ miles of range from a 13-gallon tank at 52 mpg make it a relaxed road-tripper. Rear amenities are thin, with no rear vents on the LE, few USB ports and a modest trunk for a family's luggage.

Daily driving ease78
#2 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

The hybrid's electric creep, smooth eCVT and soft ride make it very easy in traffic, and slim pillars give good visibility. Grabby, non-linear brake blending at low speed is the main annoyance.

Commuting cost efficiency90
#1 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

At 52 mpg combined, the Hybrid LE was the most fuel-efficient mid-size sedan of 2018, and its regenerative braking extends brake life. Commuting cost per mile is exceptionally low.

Parking & maneuverability62
#2 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Good outward visibility and a 37.4 ft turning circle help, but at about 192 in long it is a full mid-size footprint. The LE has only a backup camera, with no sensors.

Work capability18
#3 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

A front-drive sedan with no recommended towing for the hybrid and a 15.1 cu ft trunk. It is not meaningfully work-capable beyond light deliveries.

Durability for work duty72
#1 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Toyota's hybrid system and the Camry nameplate have a strong taxi and fleet durability record, and the Hybrid LE is a rideshare staple. It is a sedan, though, not built for abuse.

Jobsite & upfit practicality15
#3 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

There is no onboard power outlet, no tie-down ecosystem and no upfit support beyond fleet taxi conversions. It offers few work-oriented provisions.

Long-distance comfort & range74
#2 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

A supple ride, supportive front seats, a quiet cruise and over 600 miles per tank make it a strong mile-eater. Full-speed radar cruise with lane departure alert and steering assist reduces fatigue, and the drone under hard acceleration is the main endurance limit.

Outdoor & adventure capability28
#2 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

It is front-drive only (AWD came to the Camry gas models only in 2020), has low sedan ground clearance and has no tow rating. Good gravel-road manners are all it offers outdoors.

Gear & luggage flexibility42
#5 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

The 60/40 folding rear seat and a 15.1 cu ft trunk that keeps its full size despite the hybrid battery handle normal luggage. The trunk opening limits bulky gear, and there are no roof rails or hitch.

Handling & agility68
#1 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

The new TNGA-K platform with its double-wishbone rear suspension made the 2018 Camry far more composed than before. Reviewers still place it behind the Accord, Mazda6 and Fusion for agility, and the Hybrid LE's efficiency tires limit grip.

Steering feel64
#2 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Steering is precise and well weighted by Camry standards but gives little feedback.

Braking confidence56
#6 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Regen-to-friction blending is uneven: the first part of the pedal travel does little, then the brakes bite abruptly. Reviewers also measured longer stopping distances than the gas car.

Powertrain smoothness & response76
#2 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

The 208 hp hybrid system pulls away on electric power and transitions seamlessly between modes, with brisk acceleration for a hybrid. The eCVT sends revs flaring under hard throttle.

Drivetrain noise & vibration62
#2 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

The powertrain is near-silent at low speed and cruise. The 2.5L four turns raspy and droning when pushed above 4,000 rpm, which the eCVT does under hard acceleration.

Turning circle
37.4 ft curb-to-curb
43/100
#4 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

The 37.4 ft turning diameter is average for a mid-size sedan.

Driving position & ergonomics70
#3 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

The driving position is lower and sportier than before, with good adjustability, a power driver's seat and slim pillars for visibility. Physical climate and audio controls are logically placed, but the low seat makes getting in and out harder for older drivers.

Fun-to-drive factor56
#1 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

The XV70 is noticeably more engaging than earlier Camrys, and the hybrid is quicker than expected. The Hybrid LE is still a pleasant but forgettable commuter rather than a car enthusiasts seek out.

10Value & Market PositionOne of the Camry's strongest categories.3.27B+
Standard equipment generosity70
#3 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Every 2018 Camry got Toyota Safety Sense P standard (pre-collision with pedestrian detection, full-speed radar cruise, lane departure alert with steering assist, auto high beams), ten airbags and Entune 3.0 — a strong safety baseline when much of the class still charged for AEB. Offsetting it, the volume Hybrid LE has a 7-inch screen, cloth seats, and no Apple CarPlay or Android Auto on any grade (CarPlay arrived for 2019).

Feature value per dollar78
#1 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

The scored Hybrid LE offered 52 MPG combined, 208 net hp and a 676-mile range for about $28,700 delivered — about $3,800 over the gas LE, and more efficient than the Accord Hybrid (48 MPG) or Fusion/Sonata hybrids. Average cabin materials, engine noise and the lack of phone mirroring keep it strong rather than standout.

Trim & configuration breadth84
#1 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

The 2018 Camry offered three powertrains (203–206 hp 2.5L, 301-hp 3.5L V6, 208-hp hybrid) across ten grades from the $23,495 L to the $34,950 XSE V6, with sporty SE/XSE and comfort LE/XLE splits. It lacked AWD (added 2020) and the TRD grade, and the hybrid came in only three grades, so it is broad but not complete.

Sales popularity & market acceptance92
#1 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

The redesigned Camry sold 343,439 units in calendar 2018, again America's best-selling passenger car by a wide margin over the Civic, Corolla and Accord. The only deduction is the sedan segment's steady shrinkage as buyers moved to crossovers.

Brand desirability & image85
#1 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Toyota was among the strongest mainstream badges in the US, built on reliability and resale, and the XV70's sharper styling helped shed the Camry's appliance image. Trusted rather than aspirational, which keeps it in the mid-80s.

Deals & incentive availability58
#3 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

As an all-new launch-year car the Camry carried little cash early on, but a softening sedan market and the 2019 changeover brought subvented APR and modest cash offers through 2018, and the hybrid leased reasonably. Occasional modest incentives rather than generous ones.

Model freshness90
#2 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

2018 is the first model year of the XV70 generation — an all-new TNGA GA-K platform, new Dynamic Force engine and fourth-generation hybrid system sharing almost nothing with its predecessor. Buyers got the newest platform in the class, with a refresh not due until 2021.

Critical reception & awards74
#2 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

The 2018 Camry earned IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK+, US News' Best Midsize Car for the Money and for Families, KBB's #2 Best Hybrid, and was a North American Car of the Year finalist. But the simultaneously redesigned Honda Accord won NACTOY, the 10Best and most head-to-head comparisons, so the Camry was well reviewed but rarely the pick.
