The verdict

A mixed-report mid-size sedan, strong on efficiency and held back by performance.

The 2019 Camry Hybrid is a sound used buy for anyone who wants low running costs and few surprises. It returns 46 MPG combined (52 on the LE), goes about 600 miles on a tank, carries Toyota's excellent reliability record, and earned 5 NHTSA stars and an IIHS Top Safety Pick+. The trade-offs are typical of an early XV70 car: a small 7–8 in screen with wired-only CarPlay and no Android Auto, no lane centering, front-wheel drive only, and a hybrid battery warranty that is now expiring on many cars.

Detailed scoring by subject

1Performance & PowertrainThe Camry's lowest-graded category.0.57F
Horsepower
208 hp net combined (Camry Hybrid LE/SE/XLE, 2.5L + electric motor, FWD); gas grades 203–206 hp 2.5L I4 or 301 hp 3.5L V6
20/100
#1 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

2019 is the second model year of the eighth-generation (XV70) Camry, launched for 2018, and a carry-over year for the powertrains — the main 2019 change was adding Apple CarPlay to Entune 3.0. The scored hybrid uses the THS II system with a 176-hp 2.5L Dynamic Force four and a 118-hp motor for 208 hp net, identical across the LE, SE and XLE hybrid grades.

Torque
163 lb-ft (hybrid engine peak; Toyota does not publish combined system torque); gas 184 lb-ft I4, 267 lb-ft V6
13/100
#6 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Toyota quotes only the engine's 163 lb-ft for the hybrid, matching how the later-year Camry Hybrid scorecards record it; the electric motor's instant torque makes the car feel stronger off the line than this figure suggests, but the published number is what is scored.

0–60 mph time
7.5 s (Camry Hybrid, Edmunds test); quoted 7.2–8.0 s across outlets for SE/XLE
31/100
#2 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Toyota publishes no 0–60 claim; Edmunds' 7.5 s sits in the middle of the 7.2–8.0 s range reported for 2019 SE/XLE hybrids and makes the hybrid quicker than the four-cylinder gas Camry (~8 s), though well behind the V6.

Powertrain refinement70
#2 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

The XV70 hybrid's engine start/stop transitions are smooth and low-speed electric running is quiet, and the Dynamic Force four is more responsive than earlier Camry hybrids; but under hard acceleration the engine flares and drones, as is typical of Toyota's power-split system, which keeps it in the upper-middle band.

Transmission behavior74
#2 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

The hybrid's planetary eCVT never hunts or shifts harshly and delivers smooth, continuous power in normal driving; the rubber-band rev rise under heavy throttle and the gimmicky simulated six-speed Sport mode keep it short of the top band.

AWD/4WD availability10
#3 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Every 2019 Camry — gas four, V6 and hybrid — was front-wheel drive only. Toyota's Dynamic Torque Control AWD did not reach the Camry until the 2020 model year, and AWD on the hybrid not until 2025.

Powertrain lineup breadth80
#2 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

The 2019 Camry offered three distinct powertrains — the 2.5L four, a 301-hp 3.5L V6, and the THS II hybrid across LE/SE/XLE — the broadest choice among mid-size sedans that year and including an electrified option, though with no plug-in and no AWD on any of them.

2Efficiency & RangeThe Camry's best-graded category.4.00A+
Combined fuel economy
46 MPG combined (Hybrid SE/XLE); 52 MPG on the lighter Li-ion Hybrid LE
100/100
#1 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

The SE/XLE hybrid grades are scored as the volume hybrid trims, matching the basis of the later Camry Hybrid scorecards; 2019 is a carry-over powertrain year in the XV70 generation, with ratings unchanged from 2018. The LE's lithium-ion pack and lower curb weight earn it a notably higher 52 MPG.

City fuel economy
44 MPG city (Hybrid SE/XLE); 51 MPG on the Hybrid LE
100/100
#1 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

City is where the hybrid system does its best work, but the heavier nickel-metal-hydride SE/XLE grades give up 7 MPG to the LE here.

Highway fuel economy
47 MPG highway (Hybrid SE/XLE); 53 MPG on the Hybrid LE
100/100
#1 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

47 MPG highway is strong for a mid-size sedan and on par with the hybrid Accord of the era.

Driving range
~607 mi (46 MPG × 13.2-gal tank, SE/XLE); ~686 mi on the Hybrid LE
88/100
#1 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

The hybrid's 13.2-gallon tank is smaller than the gas Camry's 15.8 gallons, but its economy still stretches range past 600 miles — well above the sedan norm.

Estimated annual fuel cost
$1,450/yr (Hybrid SE/XLE, EPA 15k mi on regular); $1,300 on the Hybrid LE
80/100
#1 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

EPA's current-reference annual cost for the SE/XLE hybrid; regular fuel and 46 MPG keep it low for the class, with the LE about $150/yr cheaper still.

Fuel requirements92
#3 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Every 2019 Camry Hybrid runs on 87-octane regular, with no plug or charging to arrange — the fuel is as cheap and universally available as it gets.

3SafetyMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.69C+
NHTSA overall rating
5 stars overall (5 frontal / 5 side / 5 side pole / 5 rollover, 9.9% rollover risk)
100/100
#1 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

NHTSA rates the 2019 Camry 4-door 5 stars overall, with five stars in every sub-test: driver and passenger frontal, side barrier, side pole and rollover. The 2019 Camry Hybrid shares the XV70 body that was tested.

IIHS awards & crashworthiness76
#4 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

The 2019 Camry won IIHS's 2019 Top Safety Pick+, with Good results in both small overlap tests, the original moderate overlap and side tests, roof strength and head restraints. It sits just below the top band for two reasons. The award covers only cars with specific headlights. And the updated side test, run later on a 2022 car, rates every Camry built before February 2023 Poor overall, with Marginal driver torso and pelvis measures. That test was not part of the 2019 award criteria, but it is a real side-impact weakness in this model year.

Standard ADAS suite breadth68
#3 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Toyota Safety Sense P is standard on every 2019 Camry, including the volume Hybrid LE. It includes the pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, lane departure alert with steering assist, automatic high beams and full-speed-range adaptive cruise. Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert is optional rather than standard on the LE grades, and the suite has no lane centering, so this is a mid-band result.

Automatic emergency braking performance72
#2 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

In IIHS testing, the standard TSS-P pre-collision system earned Superior for vehicle-to-vehicle crashes, avoiding the collision at both 12 and 25 mph. It earned only Advanced for daytime pedestrian detection: some pedestrian runs ended in contact, with impact speed cut by just 6 mph in two of them. No nighttime pedestrian rating exists for this year, so the night pedestrian performance the top band requires is unproven.

Blind-spot & cross-traffic coverage55
#4 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert gives warnings only, with no steering or braking intervention. It is optional on the volume Hybrid LE and standard only on the upper grades. Rear automatic braking is also optional. That puts this at the low end of the mid band.

Lane keeping & centering45
#3 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

The 2019 Camry has only TSS-P's Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist. It nudges the car back when it starts to leave the lane, but it cannot center the car. Lane Tracing Assist, Toyota's centering function, did not reach the Camry until TSS 2.5+ in 2021. A standard reactive lane-keep system with no centering falls just below the middle band.

Adaptive cruise & highway assist62
#4 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Full-speed-range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control is standard on every 2019 Camry, Hybrid LE included, so stop-and-go traffic is covered. The car has no lane centering, though, so there is no combined highway-assist mode: the driver steers while the cruise control manages speed and following distance. That is capable adaptive cruise without highway-assist integration, a mid-band result.

Hands-free driving availability10
#1 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

No 2019 Camry offers hands-free driving on any trim or package, and none offers even hands-on lane centering.

Headlight performance62
#1 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

IIHS tested three headlight variations. Only the Hybrid XLE with the optional Adaptive Headlights package (curve-adaptive LED projectors) rates Good. The XLE/XSE units and the LE/SE/L/Hybrid LE/Hybrid SE units, which include the volume Hybrid LE, rate Acceptable. All three are LED projectors with standard high-beam assist.

Outward visibility62
#5 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

The XV70's low cowl gives good forward sightlines, but the high beltline, raked rear glass and thick C-pillars leave real rearward blind zones. The volume Hybrid LE gets only the standard backup camera. Blind-spot monitoring is optional on it, and the Bird's Eye View camera is limited to upper trims.

Child-seat (LATCH) usability80
#3 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

IIHS rates the Camry's LATCH ease of use Good+. The two outboard positions have complete, easy-to-use hardware, and the center seat has a tether anchor and can borrow the neighboring lower anchors. Like any mid-size sedan bench, it will not fit three car seats across.

4Space & ComfortMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.65C+
Seating capacity
5 seats (2+3) on all Camry Hybrid grades
100/100
#1 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

The 2019 Camry Hybrid is a conventional five-seat mid-size sedan on every grade (LE, SE, XLE), at the top of the 4–5 seat sedan band.

Front headroom
38.3 in (37.5 in with moonroof)
57/100
#6 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

38.3 in of front headroom without the moonroof is mid-pack against the 36–40 in sedan band; the available moonroof trims it to about 37.5 in.

Front legroom
42.1 in (all grades)
53/100
#5 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Front legroom of 42.1 in is squarely average for a mid-size sedan and identical across gas and hybrid XV70 cars.

Rear headroom
38.0 in second row
75/100
#2 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

38.0 in of rear headroom is strong for a low-roof sedan, near the top of the 35–39 in band.

Rear legroom
38.0 in second row
60/100
#4 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

38.0 in of rear legroom fits adults on ordinary trips but trails the 2019 Honda Accord's 40.4 in — the Camry's weakest passenger-space dimension.

Cargo/trunk volume
15.1 cu ft trunk (same as the gas Camry)
51/100
#6 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

The XV70 hybrid packages its battery under the rear seat, so the trunk keeps the gas car's full 15.1 cu ft and the 60/40 folding seatback — a real gain over the pre-2018 Camry Hybrid's 13.1 cu ft, though still behind the Accord's 16.7.

In-cabin storage & clever solutions60
#3 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Competent, conventional storage: a deep covered console bin, door pockets and an open tray ahead of the shifter, but USB-A only, Qi wireless charging limited to upper grades, and no clever packaging ideas or household power outlet.

Seat comfort73
#2 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Front seats are widely described as roomy and supportive for long trips, with a power driver's seat standard on the hybrid; caveats are short rear thigh support and the firmer bolstered SE seats.

Ride quality76
#3 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

On the then-new TNGA-K platform the Camry Hybrid rides smoothly and stays composed over broken pavement; the XLE can feel slightly buoyant at highway speed and the SE's sport tuning is firmer.

Cabin quietness67
#3 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

The hybrid is the quietest XV70 configuration at cruise, with little wind or road noise and silent EV running at low speed; the engine still drones under hard acceleration through the eCVT.

Climate & comfort features66
#3 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Dual-zone automatic climate control is standard on all hybrid grades and heated leather seats come on the Hybrid XLE, but ventilation and a heated wheel are upper-grade/package items and there is no rear climate zone.

5Cost of OwnershipGrades above the middle of the scale.2.70B-
Base MSRP
$28,695 (Camry Hybrid LE incl. destination); gas Camry L opens the wider range at ~$24,765
80/100
#6 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

2019 is the second model year of the eighth-generation (XV70) Camry and a carry-over pricing year. This scorecard grades the hybrid, so the entry point is the Hybrid LE, which opened under $29,000 delivered — in the lower part of the mid-size sedan band.

Volume-Trim Price
$30,395 (Hybrid SE incl. destination); Hybrid LE $28,695 · Hybrid XLE $33,145
81/100
#6 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

The cat2 scorecard is based on the SE/XLE hybrid, and the SE is the cheaper of the two and the likely volume trim. At about $30,400 delivered, it costs only about $1,700 more than the Hybrid LE, and the whole three-trim hybrid range stays below $34,000.

5-Year Maintenance & Repair Cost
≈$4,500 over 5 years, maintenance + repair combined (source range ~$1,600–$7,000 by methodology)
69/100
#3 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Toyota's hybrid system has a long durability record: it has no starter or alternator to wear out, and regenerative braking reduces brake wear. ToyotaCare also pays for the first two years of scheduled service. The total is kept at the same blended figure used on the later Camry scorecards, in the low-middle of a wide range of source estimates.

5-Year Resale Value Retention
≈62% of MSRP retained at 5 years (Camry Hybrid)
90/100
#2 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

The Camry Hybrid holds its value better than both the average hybrid and the average sedan. The 2019 cars reached year five in 2024, after the pandemic-era rise in used prices, so their actual resale value ended up slightly above the model's long-run projection.

Basic warranty
3 yr / 36,000 mi bumper-to-bumper (5 yr / unlimited mi corrosion perforation)
0/100
#2 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Toyota's 36-month/36,000-mile basic coverage is the industry minimum. It matches Honda and Nissan but is two years shorter than Hyundai and Kia.

Powertrain warranty
5 yr / 60,000 mi powertrain; hybrid components incl. battery 8 yr / 100,000 mi
0/100
#2 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

The powertrain term is Toyota's standard 5 years/60,000 miles, the segment minimum. The 2019 hybrid is the last model year before Toyota extended hybrid-battery coverage to 10 years/150,000 miles for MY2020, so its battery has only the 8-year/100,000-mile federal-standard coverage.

Complimentary maintenance & perks66
#2 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

ToyotaCare provides two years/25,000 miles of included scheduled maintenance plus two years of roadside assistance, which is real coverage that Nissan and the domestic brands did not match. On connected services, the 2019 car comes with a 3-year Safety Connect trial and a 6-month/2 GB Wi-Fi trial, but no fuel credits. Overall this is mid-pack, slightly behind Hyundai and Kia's longer maintenance plans.

Effective 5-Year Ownership Cost
$16,050 (≈$11,550 depreciation + $4,500 maintenance)
85/100
#3 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

$30,395 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (62% retained, or about $18,845) leaves about $11,550 in depreciation. Add the projected $4,500 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $16,050 in total.

6Reliability & QualityOne of the Camry's strongest categories.3.67A-
Predicted reliability88
#1 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

2019 is the second model year of the XV70 generation (launched for 2018) and a carry-over year, so the first-year teething issues of 2018 had largely been worked out. Consumer Reports rates the 2019 Camry Hybrid well above average for its model year, and J.D. Power's owner ratings are strong; it falls short of the 2021 car's score because the Camry did not take the midsize-car award in the three-year VDS covering 2019 vehicles (the 2019 Sonata did).

Brand reliability track record90
#1 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Toyota's multi-year dependability standing is among the best of any mass-market brand: it ranked near the top of the mass-market field in the 2022 VDS that measured 2019 vehicles, and Consumer Reports ranks it first among all brands in its most recent survey. Not quite every-year #1 in J.D. Power's mass-market VDS, which keeps it out of the mid-90s.

Recall & TSB history70

MY2019 carries more Camry campaigns than any later XV70 year, including two genuine safety items: the large Denso low-pressure fuel-pump stall recall and the vacuum-pump vane brake-assist recall. The latter is confined to the gas 2.5L (the hybrid uses an electric brake system), and the rest are small-population compliance items (OCS calibration on 680 cars, a mis-connected fuel filler pipe on 205 Camry/Avalon Hybrids, dealer load labels). Typical-to-busy activity with nothing touching the hybrid drivetrain or traction battery.

Powertrain durability reputation90
#1 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

The scored hybrid drivetrain — the 2.5L A25A-FXS Atkinson-cycle four with Toyota's planetary eCVT — descends directly from the Toyota Hybrid System that has run Camry Hybrids and Priuses past 200,000-300,000 miles in taxi fleets. The eCVT has no clutches, belts or torque converter. A little below later years because 2019 was only the second year of the A25A, and its traction battery carries the older 8yr/100k hybrid warranty rather than the 10yr/150k that began with MY2020.

Interior material quality64
#3 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

The XV70 cabin was a step up from its predecessor with an asymmetric, stitched-look dash, but reviewers flag plenty of hard plastic in the volume LE trim, and the Accord is the acknowledged benchmark at the price. The pre-refresh 2019 uses the integrated (non-floating) center screen; XLE/XSE leather and wood trims lift perceived quality but are not the scored trim.

Fit & finish78
#2 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Assembly at Toyota's Georgetown, Kentucky plant is consistent and the car ages well, but the early-XV70 thread of wind noise, interior rattles and the small factory-error recalls (fuel filler pipe left unconnected, OCS miscalibration) keep it below the later refresh years.

Dealer & service network88
#1 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Toyota's roughly 1,250 US dealerships make it the densest non-domestic network in the country, so recall work, parts and hybrid-qualified technicians are reachable almost anywhere. Service satisfaction is good rather than category-leading.

Parts availability & repair cost88
#2 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Parts are cheap, stocked everywhere and backed by a huge aftermarket — the A25A family is shared across RAV4, Avalon and Lexus ES hybrids — and RepairPal puts Camry repair costs well below the midsize average. A seven-year-old 2019 hybrid is now past its 8yr/100k hybrid-component warranty for many owners, so the inverter/traction battery is an out-of-warranty tail risk, though refurbished packs are widely available.

7Technology & InfotainmentOne of the Camry's weakest categories.1.03D
Touchscreen size
8 in on Hybrid SE/XLE; 7 in on Hybrid LE
12/100
#1 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

The 2018–2020 Camry used a 7-inch Entune 3.0 screen on L/LE grades and an 8-inch unit on SE and above; the volume Hybrid SE/XLE gets the 8-inch, small for the class but not the smallest.

Infotainment UX & responsiveness54
#5 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Entune 3.0 keeps physical volume/tuning knobs and climate buttons and responds acceptably, but its graphics and menus were dated even in 2019 and the Scout GPS Link app-based navigation was clunky.

Wireless CarPlay / Android Auto40
#5 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

2019 is the first Camry year with Apple CarPlay — wired only — and Android Auto is not offered at all (it arrived for 2020), so half of smartphone owners get no projection.

Voice control & native navigation46
#3 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Command-word voice recognition is standard and Alexa works only via the Toyota+Alexa phone app; navigation on most grades is the phone-dependent Scout GPS Link, with embedded Dynamic Navigation only in the JBL Premium package.

Audio system quality60
#2 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

A six-speaker system is standard; the available JBL Premium Audio with Clari-Fi is a genuine upgrade (nine speakers with subwoofer) but limited to the upper grade package.

Digital instrument cluster36
#5 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

No full-digital cluster on any 2019 Camry: analog gauges flank a TFT multi-information display, 7 inches on XLE and 4.2 inches lower down.

OTA update capability40
#3 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Only map data updates over the air, and only on cars with the optional Dynamic Navigation; there is no head-unit or vehicle software OTA.

Companion app & remote functions48
#3 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Remote Connect offers remote start and unlock, and Service Connect sends maintenance alerts, but these are trial-then-subscription services and there is no digital key.

Charging ports & device power44
#5 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

USB-A media and charge ports front and rear, Qi wireless charging only on upper grades, no USB-C and no household outlet.

Keyless & remote access62
#3 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Unlike the key-start gas LE, every Camry Hybrid has proximity entry and push-button start as standard; remote start is subscription-based and there is no phone-as-key.

Camera & parking aids52
#2 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

A rear camera is standard; blind-spot monitoring is optional on the Hybrid LE, and Intelligent Clearance Sonar and the Bird's Eye View camera are upper-grade options. No automated parking.

Head-up display availability55
#1 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

A large 10-inch color HUD is available, which the Accord does not offer, but only on the XLE/XSE tier (including Hybrid XLE).

8Use-Case FitOne of the Camry's weakest categories.1.84C-
Kid & car-seat practicality65
#3 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Excellent LATCH hardware and a full 15.1 cu ft trunk that fits a stroller, but a sedan's low roofline, ordinary rear door openings and 38 in of rear legroom make rear-facing seats and daily loading a compromise against SUVs.

Family safety package70
#3 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

IIHS Top Safety Pick+ (with specific headlights) and NHTSA 5 stars overall, with TSS-P standard on every grade; held back by blind-spot monitoring being optional on the Hybrid LE and no rear-seat reminder.

Family road-trip comfort64
#2 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Comfortable for four on medium hauls with a quiet hybrid cabin and 600-mile range, but rear amenities are thin (rear vents, USB, no rear climate or entertainment) and the trunk limits luggage.

Daily driving ease77
#2 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

The hybrid is the Camry's best commuter: silent low-speed EV creep, seamless transitions, standard push-button start and full-speed radar cruise make stop-and-go relaxing.

Commuting cost efficiency86
#2 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

46 MPG combined on regular fuel (52 on the LE) with a 44 MPG city figure makes it one of the cheapest mid-size cars per commuting mile.

Parking & maneuverability61
#5 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

A full mid-size 192-in footprint and 38-ft turning circle (SE/XLE) are manageable; good forward visibility helps, but rear blind spots and upper-grade-only sonar/360 camera mean care is needed.

Work capability15
#3 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Not work-capable: Toyota publishes no US tow rating for the Camry Hybrid, there is no bed, and payload is passengers plus luggage.

Durability for work duty72
#1 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

The Camry Hybrid is a proven high-mileage taxi and rideshare workhorse, and the THS II eCVT has no conventional clutches or belts to wear; 2019 is only the second year of the new platform and Dynamic Force engine, so this exact generation was less proven then.

Jobsite & upfit practicality12
#4 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

No AC outlet, no factory hitch, no roof rails, and trunk-only cargo — essentially no work provisions.

Long-distance comfort & range73
#3 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

A strong mile-eater: ~600 miles per tank, a quiet hybrid cabin at cruise, supportive seats and standard full-speed radar cruise; lane assistance is only departure alert with steering assist, not centering.

Outdoor & adventure capability38
#2 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Front-drive only (AWD came to the gas Camry for 2020, never to this hybrid), modest ground clearance, no tow rating and no roof rails — pavement-bound beyond gentle gravel roads.

Gear & luggage flexibility52
#5 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Normal luggage fits in a 15.1 cu ft trunk and the 60/40 split rear seat folds because the battery sits under the cushion, but a sedan opening limits bulky gear and there are no rails or hitch.

9Driving ExperienceMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.39C+
Handling & agility68
#2 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

The TNGA-K chassis made the XV70 the best-handling Camry yet — flat, secure and predictable, with the Hybrid SE's firmer tuning adding some sharpness — but the hybrid's extra weight and eco tires keep it short of the Accord or Mazda6.

Steering feel70
#2 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Electric steering is accurate and sensibly weighted with good on-center stability, but numb in terms of real road feedback.

Braking confidence66
#4 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Stopping power is adequate and regen-to-friction blending is better than older Toyota hybrids, but the pedal still lacks the linearity of the gas car and measured stops are only average for the class.

Powertrain smoothness & response76
#2 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

THS II transitions between electric and gas running are seamless and low-speed response is strong; the eCVT avoids shift shock but lets revs flare under hard throttle.

Drivetrain noise & vibration58
#2 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Near-silent in EV mode and at cruise, but the 2.5L becomes buzzy and droning under hard acceleration as the eCVT holds high revs.

Turning circle
38.0 ft (Hybrid SE/XLE); 37.4 ft Hybrid LE
33/100
#5 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

38.0 ft curb-to-curb on the volume Hybrid SE/XLE is mid-to-wide against the 34–40 ft sedan band; the smaller-wheeled Hybrid LE turns in 37.4 ft.

Driving position & ergonomics78
#2 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Standard power driver's seat, wide adjustment, good forward visibility through slim pillars and a sensible control layout with real knobs; the lower, sportier XV70 seating position makes entry slightly harder for older drivers.

Fun-to-drive factor55
#2 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Pleasant and quicker than expected (~7.5 s to 60) with a tidy chassis, but the eCVT drone and comfort-first tuning make it competent transportation rather than an enthusiast's car.

10Value & Market PositionOne of the Camry's strongest categories.3.30B+
Standard equipment generosity70
#4 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Every 2019 Camry Hybrid comes with Toyota Safety Sense-P (pre-collision braking with pedestrian detection, lane departure alert with steering assist, full-speed radar cruise and automatic high beams), and for 2019 every grade gained Apple CarPlay and Amazon Alexa compatibility. The volume LE/SE hybrids still have a 7-inch screen and cloth seats, and blind-spot monitoring is an option on the LE. That is competitive for the price, not generous.

Feature value per dollar78
#2 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

The Hybrid LE returns an EPA 52 MPG combined for under $29,000 delivered, the best efficiency per dollar among mid-size sedans that year, and the SE/XLE add a sportier tune or more comfort features for a few thousand more. Reviewers judged it better than the Accord Hybrid on refinement and efficiency at a lower price. It falls short of standout value because the interior and infotainment trail the class best.

Trim & configuration breadth80
#3 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

The 2019 Camry range is broad: gas L/LE/SE/XLE/XSE four-cylinder grades, XLE/XSE V6 models, three hybrid grades, and a Nightshade appearance edition added mid-year, running from about $24,800 to $35,800. The hybrid sub-range has only three trims, and 2019 has no AWD (added for 2020) or TRD model, so it scores below the later XV70 years.

Sales popularity & market acceptance92
#1 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

With 336,978 units in 2019, the Camry was again America's best-selling passenger car, its 17th consecutive year at the top, and well ahead of the Accord. The only deduction is for the steady decline of the mid-size sedan segment as buyers moved to crossovers.

Brand desirability & image86
#2 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Toyota is one of the strongest mainstream brands in the US, and its reputation translates into resale value: it won KBB's Best Resale Value brand award in 2019, the model year being scored. Its image is trusted rather than aspirational, which keeps this score in the mid-80s.

Deals & incentive availability68
#5 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

2019 was before the shortages, and the mid-size sedan segment was shrinking, so Camrys could be negotiated: Toyota regularly offered subsidized APR deals and cash rebates on the 2019 Camry, and dealers advertised heavily discounted leases. Hybrid grades usually had smaller rebates than the gas car, which keeps this in the occasional-to-common incentive range rather than at the top.

Model freshness84
#3 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

2019 is the second model year of the XV70 generation, which launched for 2018 on Toyota's then-new TNGA-K platform with a new Dynamic Force 2.5L and a fourth-generation hybrid system. For 2019 Toyota added Apple CarPlay and Alexa support. The 2021 facelift and the 2025 XV80 redesign were still years away.

Critical reception & awards76
#3 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

The 2019 Camry Hybrid reviewed very well. US News scored it 8.7/10 and ranked it #1 of 17 hybrid and electric cars, gave it Best New Cars for Teens, and named it a finalist for two mid-size categories. IIHS rated it a TOP SAFETY PICK+ (with specific headlights), and NHTSA gave it five stars. It falls short of the top band because the redesigned Accord, a Car and Driver 10Best winner, beat it in C&D's comparison test.
