The verdict

A struggling subcompact suv, strong on reliability and held back by performance.

The 2022 Corolla Cross, the model's first US year, is a sensible small SUV that is cheap to own. It started at $23,410 delivered, earned an IIHS Top Safety Pick+, gets 32 MPG combined, and keeps roughly 71% of its value after five years. The trade-offs are clear: a 169-hp engine that needs 9 to 10.7 seconds to reach 60 mph, a loud cabin, a tight 32-inch rear seat and dated wired-only infotainment. There was no hybrid until 2023. Buy it for low running costs and peace of mind, not for driving enjoyment or space.

Detailed scoring by subject

1Performance & PowertrainThe Corolla Cross's lowest-graded category.0.00F
Horsepower
169 hp (2.0L I4, every 2022 trim — no other engine offered)
5/100
#3 of 14 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

2022 is the Corolla Cross's US launch year, and every L, LE and XLE uses the same naturally aspirated 2.0-liter M20A-FKS four at 169 hp. The Hybrid (196 hp) did not arrive until the 2023 model year, so 169 hp is both the volume figure and the range maximum, near the floor of the SUV band.

Torque
150 lb-ft (2.0L I4, all trims)
5/100
#8 of 14 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

The 2.0L peaks at 150 lb-ft high in the rev range with no turbo or electric assist available in 2022, so it has to be worked hard for merges and grades.

0–60 mph time
~9.2 s (Car and Driver); MotorWeek measured 10.7 s
5/100
#9 of 14 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Instrumented tests put the 2022 Corolla Cross between roughly 9.2 and 10.7 seconds to 60 mph — among the slowest crossovers on sale, and without the quicker Hybrid that later model years can point to.

Powertrain refinement42
#13 of 14 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

The 2.0-liter is quiet at part throttle but turns coarse and loud whenever real acceleration is asked of it, which is often given its modest torque. Unlike 2023 onward there is no smoother Hybrid alternative to soften the verdict for the lineup.

Transmission behavior45
#13 of 14 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Every 2022 Corolla Cross uses Toyota's Direct Shift-CVT with a physical launch gear, which helps step-off feel, but revs still hang and drone under throttle and the rubber-band response does nothing to hide the engine's weakness.

Max towing capacity
1,500 lbs when properly equipped
7/100
#2 of 14 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Toyota rates the 2022 Corolla Cross at 1,500 lbs properly equipped — enough for a small utility trailer, just above the floor of the SUV towing band.

AWD/4WD availability72
#4 of 14 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

AWD is optional on all three 2022 grades (L, LE, XLE), so buyers needn't climb the trim ladder to get it. The hardware is a basic on-demand Dynamic Torque Control AWD system with no low range or locking differential.

Off-road capability35
#7 of 14 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

About 8.1–8.2 inches of ground clearance and available AWD handle snowy driveways and graded dirt roads, but there is no off-road trim, skid plating, locker or low range.

Powertrain lineup breadth30
#8 of 14 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

For 2022 the Corolla Cross is a single-powertrain vehicle: the 169 hp 2.0L with CVT, choice of FWD or AWD only. The Hybrid joined for 2023, and no turbo, PHEV or EV variant exists.

2Efficiency & RangeGrades above the middle of the scale.2.88B-
3SafetyOne of the Corolla Cross's strongest categories.3.26B+
NHTSA overall rating
5 stars (generation result — NHTSA published no overall rating for MY2022; 4 frontal / 5 side / 5 pole tested)
100/100
#1 of 14 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

NHTSA crash-tested the launch-year 2022 Corolla Cross and published 4 stars frontal and 5 stars side, but ran no rollover test, so no overall rating was assigned for MY2022. The same XG10 structure with identical frontal and side results earned a published 5-star overall once rollover was tested for MY2025, which is the generation figure used here.

IIHS awards & crashworthiness90
#3 of 14 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

The 2022 Corolla Cross earned the IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK+ with Good ratings in every crashworthiness test then in the protocol — small overlap front on both sides, the original moderate overlap and side tests, roof strength and head restraints. The tougher updated moderate-overlap and side tests that later came back Acceptable were not applied to the 2022 award.

Standard ADAS suite breadth76
#2 of 14 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard on every 2022 trim — Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection, Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist, Lane Tracing Assist, Road Sign Assist and Automatic High Beams. Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert is missing from the base L but standard from the volume LE upward, so the typical buyer gets the full suite.

Automatic emergency braking performance82
#3 of 14 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

IIHS rates both vehicle-to-vehicle and daytime pedestrian front crash prevention Superior: the car avoided collisions at 12 and 25 mph against a vehicle target and against crossing child and adult pedestrians. It fell just short of full avoidance in the hardest 37 mph parallel-adult run (a 28 mph speed reduction), and the 2022 TSS 2.0 car carries no nighttime pedestrian result — the Superior night rating arrived with TSS 3.0 for 2023.

Blind-spot & cross-traffic coverage66
#3 of 14 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert is standard on LE and XLE but not offered on the base L, so IIHS classes it as optional. Coverage is alert-only with no blind-spot steering or braking intervention, and rear automatic braking is bundled into the XLE's parking-assist option.

Lane keeping & centering66
#3 of 14 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist and Lane Tracing Assist are standard on every 2022 trim, so lane centering is available even on the base L. Toyota's TSS 2.0 LTA works on well-marked highways but tends to nudge rather than confidently center and drops out on faded lines; it centers only with radar cruise engaged.

Adaptive cruise & highway assist74
#1 of 14 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control is standard on every 2022 trim and works to a stop and back, pairing with Lane Tracing Assist for a competent highway-assist package at this price. Calibration is smooth, but the 169-hp 2.0-liter and CVT — the only powertrain in 2022, before the hybrid arrived — make resumes and uphill catch-ups leisurely.

Hands-free driving availability5
#4 of 14 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

No hands-free driving system was offered on the 2022 Corolla Cross at any trim; Lane Tracing Assist requires hands on the wheel and disengages without steering input.

Headlight performance65
#4 of 14 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

The LED projectors on L, LE and the standard XLE rate only Acceptable; Good-rated curve-adaptive headlights require the XLE with the Adaptive Front-Lighting System, so the volume LE buyer gets the weaker set. Automatic high beams are standard on all trims.

Outward visibility70
#5 of 14 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

The upright, boxy Corolla Cross greenhouse gives clear forward and quarter sightlines from a high seating position, better than swoopier subcompact rivals. No 360-degree camera was offered in 2022, so the rear three-quarter zone relies on mirrors, the standard backup camera and (LE/XLE) blind-spot monitoring; parking sensors are XLE-only.

Child-seat (LATCH) usability88
#1 of 14 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

IIHS rates LATCH ease of use Good+, the top tier, with easily reached hardware at both outboard positions and a center position that has a tether anchor and can borrow lower anchors. The main limit is the width of a subcompact rear bench for true three-across use.

4Space & ComfortOne of the Corolla Cross's weakest categories.0.42F
Seating capacity
5 seats (2 rows)
25/100
#1 of 14 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

The launch-year 2022 Corolla Cross is a two-row, five-passenger subcompact SUV on every grade (L, LE, XLE); no larger seating configuration exists.

Front headroom
38.6 in (up to 39.5 in by roof configuration)
32/100
#12 of 14 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

The volume LE has no moonroof and measures about 38.6 in of front headroom — mid-pack in the 37–42 in SUV band. The XG10 body is unchanged from 2022 through 2025.

Front legroom
42.9 in
64/100
#3 of 14 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

42.9 in of front legroom is generous for a subcompact SUV; the front row is the uncompromised part of this cabin.

Rear headroom
39.0 in
75/100
#4 of 14 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

The tall, boxy roofline gives the second row about 39 in of headroom, near the top of the SUV band, which partly offsets the tight legroom.

Rear legroom
32.0 in
17/100
#14 of 14 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

At 32.0 in the rear seat is among the tightest in the subcompact class; reviewers say the upright seating keeps it from feeling cramped, but the number is still class-trailing.

Third-row usability20
#2 of 14 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

No third row is offered on any 2022 Corolla Cross grade — it is strictly a two-row, five-seat SUV, so this item sits in the low band by definition.

Cargo/trunk volume
24.0 cu ft (FWD, SAE basis); 21.5 cu ft AWD — Toyota quotes 26.5 cu ft to the roof
0/100
#6 of 14 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

About 24 cu ft behind the rear seat on the volume FWD car is par for a subcompact SUV but below the 25 cu ft floor of the all-SUV band; AWD hardware raises the floor and trims it to about 21.5 cu ft. Sources quote different measurement bases.

Max cargo volume
46.9 cu ft seats folded (FWD); ~44 cu ft AWD; Toyota quotes 66.8 cu ft to the roof
0/100
#6 of 14 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

46.9 cu ft with the 60/40 bench folded is respectable among subcompacts but below the 55 cu ft SUV-band floor, and the seatbacks don't fold flat.

In-cabin storage & clever solutions56
#6 of 14 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Storage is competent rather than clever: six cupholders on XLE, usable door bins, a center console bin and overhead console, a wireless charging tray from LE up and a tonneau cover on XLE — but no underfloor organizer or standout packaging trick.

Seat comfort56
#6 of 14 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Front seats are fine for commuting but drew complaints of a short, unsupportive seat bottom on longer drives; adjustment is manual until the XLE's 10-way power seat, and the 32-in rear row caps adult comfort.

Ride quality64
#2 of 14 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

The comfort-biased tune absorbs most bumps and reviewers call it an easy-going daily driver, though it can feel soft and floaty over undulations.

Cabin quietness42
#7 of 14 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Highway refinement is a consistent weakness of the launch car: road noise intrudes from behind the front seats and the 2.0L gets loud under the frequent hard throttle it needs, so raised voices are needed at speed.

Climate & comfort features48
#6 of 14 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Comfort equipment is thin on the volume grades: heated front seats, dual-zone automatic climate and a power driver's seat are XLE-only, with no heated wheel, ventilated seats or remote pre-conditioning at any 2022 price; rear-seat air vents are a plus.

5Cost of OwnershipOne of the Corolla Cross's strongest categories.3.15B
Base MSRP
$23,410 (L FWD, incl. $1,215 destination)
100/100
#1 of 14 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

The launch-year gas L FWD started at $22,195 before Toyota's $1,215 delivery charge, putting it under $23,500 delivered — below the bottom of the SUV normalization band. 2022 was the first US model year and the cheapest the nameplate has been.

Volume-Trim Price
$27,060 (LE AWD, incl. destination); range $23,410–$28,840 delivered, gas only for 2022
100/100
#1 of 14 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

LE is the volume grade — it adds the 8-inch screen and blind-spot monitoring over the L — and AWD (+$1,300) is the common configuration, landing the representative car at about $27,000 delivered. The hybrid did not exist yet for 2022, so the whole lineup topped out under $29,000.

5-Year Maintenance & Repair Cost
~$5,100 over 5 yr / 75,000 mi (source range ~$1,850 scheduled-only to ~$6,200 all-in)
68/100
#7 of 14 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Conventional Toyota running gear — the 2.0L M20A four and CVT shared with the Corolla — keeps the service ledger to routine oil, filter and fluid intervals with a small repair line. The source spread is scope: CarEdge counts the factory schedule only, while Edmunds-style figures add wear items.

5-Year Resale Value Retention
~70–74% of MSRP retained at 5 yr
100/100
#1 of 14 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Residuals are the Corolla Cross's strongest ownership line: the Toyota badge, US assembly at Huntsville and heavy demand for cheap small crossovers hold value at the top of the SUV band. The 2022 launch year also benefited from the 2021–23 used-car price spike.

Basic warranty
3 yr / 36,000 mi bumper-to-bumper

#7 of 14 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Standard Toyota coverage at the industry floor, behind the 5 yr / 60,000 mi that the Hyundai Kona and Kia Seltos carry.

#6 of 14 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

The segment minimum, half the Hyundai/Kia 10 yr / 100,000 mi powertrain benchmark. 2022 was gas-only, so none of Toyota's longer hybrid-component coverage applies.

Complimentary maintenance & perks62
#4 of 14 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

ToyotaCare covers factory-scheduled service for 2 yr / 25,000 mi plus 2 years of unlimited-mileage roadside assistance. That is real money off the first few visits, but the window is short and it carries nothing beyond the standard Toyota package, so it sits mid-band.

Effective 5-Year Ownership Cost
$12,947 (≈$7,847 depreciation + $5,100 maintenance)
95/100
#1 of 14 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

$27,060 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (71% retained, or about $19,213) leaves about $7,847 in depreciation. Add the projected $5,100 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $12,947 in total.

6Reliability & QualityThe Corolla Cross's best-graded category.3.27B+
Predicted reliability82
#1 of 14 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Launch-year car that has aged well: Consumer Reports gives the 2022 its top 5/5 reliability mark and J.D. Power scores it 82/100 for quality & reliability — both stronger than the 2023 that followed. The NHTSA complaint file is modest (around 60 complaints) but not empty, clustered on engine, electrical and steering, which keeps it out of the upper top band.

Brand reliability track record88
#1 of 14 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Toyota has been one of the two or three most dependable badges in the US for a decade — consistently near the top of Consumer Reports' brand rankings around the 2022 timeframe. J.D. Power's VDS places Toyota above the industry average but not top-five, which keeps this out of the 90s.

Recall & TSB history62
#9 of 14 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Only two NHTSA campaigns touch the 2022 gas Corolla Cross, but both concern the same safety defect — a passenger airbag that may not deploy because the instrument panel left the plant unperforated — and the second exists because dealers performed the first inspection incorrectly. The 2023-only spiral-cable airbag recalls and the hybrid brake-software recall do not apply to this year. Typical-to-below-typical activity: low count, but a safety-system defect with a botched remedy.

Powertrain durability reputation82
#2 of 14 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

The 2022 is gas-only (the hybrid arrived for 2023): the 2.0L M20A-FKS Dynamic Force four and K120 Direct Shift CVT, high-volume hardware shared with the Corolla and other TNGA-C Toyotas, with no pattern of oil consumption, head-gasket or timing-chain failure. Held short of the top band by the early Dynamic Force EGR-cooler weak point and recurring CVT hesitation complaints.

Interior material quality55
#9 of 14 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

The standing reviewer complaint about this car: hard plastic across the dash, doors and console with little soft-touch relief, and basic switchgear. Acceptable at its low-$20Ks base price and no worse than a Kicks or Trax, but the Mazda CX-30 and Honda HR-V feel a class above for similar money.

Fit & finish70
#5 of 14 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Reviewers describe solid, tight assembly with no rattle pattern, but 2022 was the first model year out of the brand-new Mazda Toyota Manufacturing plant in Huntsville, and it produced a genuine assembly escape — instrument panels built without the required airbag-deployment perforation. Solid, not exemplary.

Dealer & service network85
#2 of 14 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Roughly 1,200 US Toyota dealers make this one of the densest service networks in the country, backed by abundant independent Toyota specialists. Service satisfaction is at or above the mass-market average rather than class-leading.

Parts availability & repair cost88
#1 of 14 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Shares its engine, CVT, TNGA-C platform hardware and most consumables with the Corolla, one of Toyota's highest-volume nameplates, so parts are cheap, widely stocked and well supported by the aftermarket; routine service is inexpensive.

7Technology & InfotainmentOne of the Corolla Cross's weakest categories.1.05D
Touchscreen size
8.0 in on LE and XLE; 7.0 in on base L — no larger screen offered
12/100
#3 of 14 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

The volume LE and the XLE get an 8-inch touchscreen and the base L a 7-inch unit; nothing larger is offered in 2022.

Infotainment UX & responsiveness52
#9 of 14 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

The carryover Entune 3.0-era head unit keeps physical audio and climate controls and simple menus with split-screen, but reviewers called it dated and clunky with a low-resolution backup camera feed; Toyota replaced it for 2023.

Wireless CarPlay / Android Auto58
#6 of 14 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard on every 2022 grade but wired-only; wireless projection arrived with the new 2023 Toyota Audio Multimedia system.

Voice control & native navigation45
#9 of 14 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

No embedded navigation is offered — the Audio Plus package relies on a phone-app connected-navigation solution — and voice control is basic, with Amazon Alexa integration via the app; most owners will use phone projection.

Audio system quality60
#3 of 14 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Six speakers are standard and adequate; a nine-speaker JBL system (Audio Plus) is optional on LE and XLE — broader premium-audio access than many subcompacts.

Digital instrument cluster50
#4 of 14 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

The volume LE keeps analog dials with a 4.2-inch multi-information display; the 7-inch digital driver display is XLE-only.

OTA update capability28
#8 of 14 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

The 2022 Entune 3.0-generation head unit has no meaningful over-the-air software capability; OTA multimedia updates arrived with the 2023 Toyota Audio Multimedia system.

Companion app & remote functions58
#6 of 14 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

The Toyota app offers Service Connect and, on Smart Key grades with a Remote Connect trial, remote start, lock/unlock and vehicle locate; functions are subscription-gated after trials and there is no phone-as-key.

Charging ports & device power58
#3 of 14 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Front USB plus two rear USB charge ports and a Qi wireless charging pad come on LE and XLE; the base L has two front USB ports only, and no AC outlet is offered.

Keyless & remote access62
#4 of 14 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Smart Key proximity entry with push-button start comes on LE and XLE, with app-based remote start; the base L uses a conventional key, a power liftgate is a $1,250 XLE option with no kick sensor, and there's no phone-as-key.

Camera & parking aids50
#4 of 14 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

A backup camera is standard but low resolution; front and rear Parking Assist with Automatic Braking comes only on the XLE, and no surround-view camera or automated parking is offered in the US.

Head-up display availability15
#7 of 14 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

No head-up display is offered on any 2022 Corolla Cross grade.

8Use-Case FitGrades below the middle of the scale.1.69D
Kid & car-seat practicality55
#7 of 14 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

LATCH hardware is excellent — IIHS rates ease of use Good+ — and the tall doors and seat height ease kid loading, but the class-tight 32-in rear row makes rear-facing seats force the front passenger well forward, and three seats across won't fit.

Family safety package74
#2 of 14 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

IIHS Top Safety Pick+ and Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 standard on every grade, including full-speed adaptive cruise and pedestrian AEB; blind-spot monitoring is missing from the base L and parking-sensor braking is XLE-only.

Family road-trip comfort48
#8 of 14 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Rear vents and rear USB ports on LE/XLE help, but tight rear legroom, highway road noise, an unsupportive seat bottom and a modest cargo area limit multi-hour trips with four aboard.

Daily driving ease66
#5 of 14 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Easy in town — light steering, good visibility, physical controls and a compliant ride — but the 169-hp engine and CVT must be worked hard in traffic, and phone projection needs a cable.

Commuting cost efficiency74
#3 of 14 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

32 MPG combined (FWD) on regular fuel and Toyota's low maintenance costs make it cheap to commute in, though with no hybrid offered in 2022 it can't match later hybrid grades.

Parking & maneuverability76
#6 of 14 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

A 175.6-in footprint, a 35.4-ft turning circle and an upright greenhouse make it easy to place and park; only the XLE adds parking sensors.

Work capability28
#4 of 14 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

A 1,500-lb tow rating and a 169-hp engine already strained unloaded cover a small utility trailer and nothing more.

Durability for work duty56
#1 of 14 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

The M20A engine and TNGA-C platform are proven across the Corolla family and Toyota's durability reputation is strong, but this is a light-duty commuter crossover, not a fleet work tool.

Jobsite & upfit practicality30
#5 of 14 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Roof rails from LE up, cargo tie-downs, a 60/40 bench and a light-duty hitch are the whole work story; no onboard power or work-specific upfit ecosystem.

Long-distance comfort & range50
#7 of 14 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Standard full-speed adaptive cruise and lane tracing reduce highway fatigue and range is nearly 400 miles, but road noise, a loud engine under load and an unsupportive seat bottom limit long-haul comfort.

Outdoor & adventure capability58
#5 of 14 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

About 8.1 in of ground clearance, AWD available on every grade and roof rails from LE up handle gravel roads and trailheads, but power is limited and there's no off-road hardware.

Gear & luggage flexibility54
#7 of 14 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

A wide liftgate, 60/40 bench and roof rails handle ordinary luggage and a bike rack, but the seats don't fold flat and max volume trails larger compact SUVs.

9Driving ExperienceGrades below the middle of the scale.1.66D
Handling & agility57
#10 of 14 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Secure and predictable on the Corolla's TNGA-C underpinnings, with some reviewers finding it playful in corners; others note comfort-tuned body lean.

Steering feel54
#9 of 14 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Light and accurate, easy to place in town; one review praised its feel while others call it numb.

Braking confidence56
#6 of 14 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Progressive, predictable pedal with adequate stopping power and no fade complaints; brake auto hold on XLE is a plus in traffic.

Powertrain smoothness & response46
#12 of 14 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

The only 2022 powertrain — a 169-hp 2.0L with launch-gear CVT — is smooth at part throttle but slow to respond, with revs hanging under load and ~9–10.7 s to 60 mph.

Drivetrain noise & vibration42
#10 of 14 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

The 2.0L drones and turns loud during passing maneuvers, which the modest torque makes frequent.

Turning circle
35.4 ft curb-to-curb (all trims)
83/100
#7 of 14 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

A 35.4-ft turning diameter is near the tight end of the SUV band, thanks to the short 103.9-in wheelbase.

Driving position & ergonomics60
#9 of 14 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Elevated seating, slim pillars and tall glass give excellent visibility and easy ingress, with physical climate and audio controls; manual seat adjustment below XLE and a short seat cushion limit it.

Fun-to-drive factor42
#10 of 14 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Pleasant handling is undone by the underpowered engine and droning CVT; competent, forgettable transport with no enthusiast appeal.

10Value & Market PositionMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.52C+
Standard equipment generosity64
#10 of 14 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 and LED headlights come standard even on the $23,410 L, which is good safety content for the price. But the launch-year L is sparse: a 7-inch screen, no blind-spot monitor and no wireless charging. Volume buyers have to step up to the LE for the 8-inch screen, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and two rear USB ports. The 2023 update later added TSS 3.0 and the new infotainment system on every grade.

Feature value per dollar72
#4 of 14 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

A $23,410 delivered start, available AWD on every trim and an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ make it a sensible, cheap buy, and Toyota's class-leading residuals protect the money. The cost is a slow, droning 169-hp gas four and hard interior plastics. With no hybrid until 2023, it lacks the efficiency standout that lifts later years.

Trim & configuration breadth62
#8 of 14 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Three gas grades (L, LE, XLE), each offered with FWD or AWD, span about $23k–$29k with a genuine budget entry point. That is a narrow range: there is one powertrain, no hybrid (it arrived for 2023), no sporty or off-road variant, and options are limited to a few packages.

Sales popularity & market acceptance68
#3 of 14 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

56,666 US sales in calendar 2022, its first full year on sale, despite supply constraints. That is a strong debut that grew to 64,090 in 2023 and 93,021 in 2024. For 2022 itself it was a healthy mid-pack seller, well behind the segment leaders.

Brand desirability & image82
#1 of 14 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Toyota carries the strongest reliability reputation and one of the most loyal followings among mainstream US brands, and the Corolla name is a trust asset for the budget and first-time buyers in this class. That standing shows up as strong residuals and buyer confidence rather than aspirational cachet.

Deals & incentive availability45
#6 of 14 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

The 2022 model year sold at the height of the chip shortage. Inventory of a brand-new, cheap Toyota crossover was thin, buyers often faced waitlists, and dealer markups over MSRP were common. Toyota's support was limited to $500 college and military rebates and some subvented financing, so buyers saw very little benefit.

Model freshness82
#3 of 14 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

2022 was the all-new US launch year of the first-generation Corolla Cross, built on the current TNGA-C platform at the new Mazda Toyota plant in Huntsville, so a 2022 buyer faced no replacement risk. It lacked only the TSS 3.0 and infotainment updates that arrived a year later.

Critical reception & awards62
#7 of 14 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Reviewers called it sensible and safe but placed it mid-pack. They praised the space, safety and expected reliability, and criticized the weak, noisy powertrain and plain cabin. The IIHS Top Safety Pick+ is a real distinction, but there were no comparison-test wins or 10Best/NACTOY honors.
