The verdict
A struggling compact suv, strong on safety and held back by performance.
The 2020 Tiguan is one of the roomiest and most comfortable compact SUVs of its year. It has 73.5 cu ft of maximum cargo space, a quiet, well-damped ride, top crash-test results and a low $29,415 price for the volume SE 4Motion. The trade-offs are real, though. Its 184-hp engine needs about 8.6 seconds to reach 60 mph, it returns only 25 MPG combined, and a 4-year/50,000-mile warranty plus weak resale make it a costlier car to keep than its sticker suggests. Buy it for space and comfort, not for speed, fuel savings or long-term peace of mind.

Detailed scoring by subject
1Performance & PowertrainThe Tiguan's lowest-graded category.0.00F
The 2020 Tiguan is a carry-over year of the second generation (MQB, US-market long-wheelbase, launched for 2018) with a single EA888 2.0T rated 184 hp on every trim — low for a compact SUV.
221 lb-ft arrives low in the rev range, giving reasonable around-town pull despite the modest horsepower.
Instrumented tests of the 184-hp Tiguan cluster in the mid-8-second range, slower than most turbocharged compact-SUV rivals.
The 2.0T is smooth and quiet at cruise with useful low-end torque, but feels strained at highway passing speeds and with a load, and the stop/start restart is noticeable.
The Aisin 8-speed automatic shifts smoothly but is slow to kick down and can hesitate pulling away from a stop.
Rated at only 1,500 lbs, below rivals such as the Escape, Equinox (turbo) and Tucson that offer 1,500–3,500 lbs.
4Motion on-demand AWD is optional on S, SE and SEL and standard on SEL Premium R-Line, with 4Motion Active Control drive modes (On-Road, Snow, Off-Road, Custom).
Off-Road mode with hill descent control helps on dirt trails, but roughly 7.9 in of clearance, no skid plates and no off-road trim make it pavement-oriented.
One engine and one transmission across all trims, with no hybrid or plug-in option while rivals like the RAV4 and Escape offered hybrids.
2Efficiency & RangeOne of the Tiguan's weakest categories.1.19D
The standard FWD configuration of the S/SE/SEL volume trims is EPA-rated 25 MPG combined; 4Motion drops to 23 — middling for a non-hybrid compact SUV.
22 MPG city is typical of turbocharged gas compact SUVs.
29 MPG highway is about average for the segment.
Computed from the FWD model's 15.3-gal tank and 25 MPG combined; 4Motion (15.9 gal × 23 MPG) gives about 366 mi.
EPA estimate at 15,000 mi/yr on regular fuel at current prices.
Runs on regular unleaded across all trims.
3SafetyThe Tiguan's best-graded category.2.61C+
NHTSA rates the 2020 Tiguan five stars overall in both FWD and AWD form. The side result is five stars; frontal and rollover are four stars each.
The 2020 Tiguan earned an IIHS Top Safety Pick (not TSP+), with Good ratings in every crashworthiness test. The award was available only with the Good-rated LED projector headlights from the upper trims, and the Poor halogen headlights on lower trims are what kept it from TSP+.
From 2020, Front Assist AEB with pedestrian monitoring, Blind Spot Monitor and Rear Traffic Alert are standard on every Tiguan. Adaptive cruise and Lane Assist are standard only from the SEL up; on the S and the volume SE they are optional, so core items are missing on lower trims.
IIHS rates the vehicle-to-vehicle AEB Superior and daytime pedestrian AEB Advanced. There is no nighttime pedestrian result, and the later nighttime test of this generation rated only Basic, which places it in the middle band.
Blind Spot Monitor and Rear Traffic Alert are standard on every 2020 trim, a step up from 2019, when they were optional on lower trims. Both are alert-focused; there is no safe-exit warning and no trailer-aware coverage.
In 2020, Lane Assist is a lane-keeping nudge rather than true centering; Travel Assist centering reached the US Tiguan only with the 2021 IQ.DRIVE update. It is also optional below the SEL.
ACC with Stop & Go is capable, but in 2020 it is not paired with lane centering into a combined highway assist. It is standard only from the SEL up and optional on the volume SE.
There is no hands-free or even hands-on lane-centering highway assist for 2020.
The halogen reflectors fitted to the S, SE and SEL (the volume trims) rate Poor at IIHS. Only the LED projector lights with curve adaptation and high-beam assist on the SEL Premium R-Line rate Good.
The second-generation Tiguan's upright, boxy glasshouse and large side windows give good sightlines for a compact SUV. The 360-degree Area View camera is limited to the top SEL Premium R-Line.
IIHS rates LATCH ease of use Acceptable, with two full LATCH positions. The sliding second row helps with rear-facing installs, but three seats across is tight in a compact SUV.
4Space & ComfortGrades below the middle of the scale.1.33D
The volume SE 4Motion is a two-row five-seater; the 2018–2024 US Tiguan's small third row is standard on FWD models and optional on most 4Motion trims, but not on SEL Premium R-Line.
Generous front headroom for a compact SUV thanks to the upright second-generation body.
Front legroom is merely adequate and at the bottom of the SUV band.
Second-row headroom is good for adults, aided by the tall roofline.
The sliding second row gives class-competitive rear legroom in two-row models; three-row versions trade about 2 in for the third row.
A third row exists (standard on FWD, optional on 4Motion) but with under 28 in of legroom it is child-only and kills most cargo space when raised; the scored volume config is two-row.
Behind-second-row space is near the top of the compact class, though modest on this item's full-SUV band.
Folded-seat capacity is among the largest of 2020 compact SUVs.
Sliding/reclining 40/20/40 second row with a pass-through and a wireless charging tray from SE up; bins are practical but conventional.
Front seats are supportive with good adjustment, but some reviewers find them not ideal for long trips; the sliding/reclining rear bench is comfortable for two adults.
Comfortable, well-damped ride with firm-but-controlled body motions; one of the more composed rides among 2020 compact SUVs.
Cabin ranks among the quietest in the segment, with only some engine noise when revved.
Heated front seats and dual-zone climate arrive at the SE; remote start optional on SE and standard at SEL; heated wheel and leather are SEL Premium R-Line items; no ventilated seats offered in 2020.
5Cost of OwnershipOne of the Tiguan's strongest categories.2.55C+
The 2020 Tiguan S opened the range at $25,695 delivered, among the lowest entry prices in the compact-SUV class that year despite newly standard AEB and blind-spot monitoring.
The SE is the volume trim — it adds heated seats, keyless access and wireless charging over the S — and is typically bought with the $1,300 4Motion option, landing below comparable CR-V EX / RAV4 XLE AWD grades.
The first two scheduled services are free under the new 2020 Carefree program, but EA888 2.0T out-of-warranty items (water pump/thermostat housing, PCV) and German-brand labour rates put combined 5-year spend above Toyota/Honda rivals.
The Tiguan depreciates faster than the compact-SUV average (~60% retained), though the 2020 model year was cushioned somewhat by the 2021–2023 used-car price spike.
MY2020 is the year VW replaced its 6-year/72,000-mile People First warranty with 4 years/50,000 miles — still better than the 3/36 mainstream norm, but a clear step back from the 2018–2019 Tiguan.
VW has no separate, longer powertrain term for MY2020: engine and transmission fall under the same 4-year/50,000-mile warranty, short of the 5/60 mainstream norm and far below Hyundai/Kia's 10/100.
New for 2020, Carefree Coverage adds two years/20,000 miles of scheduled maintenance plus roadside assistance and a Car-Net trial — genuinely multi-year, though it covers only the first two services and trails ToyotaCare's breadth.
$29,415 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (52% retained, or about $15,296) leaves about $14,119 in depreciation. Add the projected $6,200 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $20,319 in total.
6Reliability & QualityMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.05C
2020 is the third US model year of the second-generation (2018-2024) long-wheelbase Tiguan, a carry-over year before the 2022 refresh. J.D. Power rates it 'Average', Consumer Reports' original predicted-reliability rating was a very low 1/5, though CR's retrospective owner data now places the 2020 above its model-year peers, so the signals are mixed and it sits low in the mid band.
Around 2020 Volkswagen sat in the lower third of Consumer Reports' brand reliability rankings and below the industry average in J.D. Power's Vehicle Dependability Study, with complaints concentrated in electrical, infotainment and accessory faults rather than catastrophic failures.
MY2020 is covered by three small NHTSA campaigns — a front-seat backrest weld fault, under-torqued third-row belt anchors on six vehicles, and dealer-accessory rear spoiler attachment — with no powertrain, fire or airbag recalls. The broader generation's camera, TPMS and early-year seatbelt campaigns did not touch 2020.
The 2020 US Tiguan's only powertrain is the 184-hp EA888 Gen3 2.0T with an Aisin eight-speed automatic, a high-volume pairing with no systemic failure pattern, but with well-documented water-pump/thermostat-housing coolant leaks and direct-injection carbon buildup, plus owner reports of sluggish take-off, keeping it out of the proven-durable band.
The pre-refresh cabin is clean and well assembled with soft-touch upper surfaces and conventional physical climate and steering-wheel controls (before the 2022 capacitive switchgear), though reviewers note plenty of hard plastics lower down and a plain look on volume S/SE trims.
Built on a mature MQB line at VW's Puebla, Mexico plant, the Tiguan is generally consistent and structurally quiet; owner complaints focus on infotainment and electrical glitches rather than rattles or panel gaps, consistent with an 'Average' J.D. Power quality score.
Volkswagen's roughly 600-650 US dealers give solid metro coverage but thinner rural reach than Toyota, Honda, Ford or Chevrolet, and VW service satisfaction is mid-pack. The 2020 model year still carried VW's 6-year/72,000-mile transferable bumper-to-bumper warranty, an above-class safety net that was cut to 4yr/50k for 2021.
A high-volume generation and the ubiquitous EA888 engine mean parts are plentiful and the aftermarket is deep, but German-brand component pricing and labor times keep typical repair costs somewhat above the compact SUV average.
7Technology & InfotainmentOne of the Tiguan's weakest categories.1.09D
The volume SE uses an 8-inch MIB II touchscreen; the S makes do with 6.5 in, and nothing larger is offered.
The MIB II system is logical with physical knobs and climate controls, but the screen is small and graphics dated versus 2020 rivals.
Wired App-Connect (CarPlay/Android Auto/MirrorLink) is standard on every trim; wireless projection did not arrive until the MIB3 update for 2022.
Discover Media navigation only on SEL and SEL Premium R-Line; basic command-based voice control; most owners use phone projection.
Base audio is adequate; the Fender premium system is confined to the top SEL Premium R-Line.
The crisp, configurable Digital Cockpit is standard only on SEL and SEL Premium R-Line; S and SE keep analog gauges.
No over-the-air software updates on the MIB II Tiguan; updates require dealer visits.
Car-Net app offers lock/unlock, honk/flash, vehicle status and remote start (where equipped) with a free Remote Access tier; Wi-Fi hotspot and safety services are paid.
USB-C ports up front and wireless charging from SE; no household AC outlet.
KESSY keyless access/push-button start from SE; remote start optional on SE, standard on SEL; hands-free liftgate on the top trim only; no phone-as-key.
Rearview camera standard; parking sensors and the Area View 360-degree camera are limited to upper trims (Area View on SEL Premium R-Line).
No head-up display offered on the 2020 Tiguan.
8Use-Case FitMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.80C-
Big rear doors, a sliding second row and one of the class's largest cargo holds make family logistics easy; LATCH is only rated Acceptable and the optional third row is child-only.
IIHS Top Safety Pick and NHTSA 5 stars; for 2020 AEB with pedestrian detection and blind-spot/rear-traffic alert became standard, though adaptive cruise and lane assist still cost extra below SEL and lower-trim headlights rate Poor.
Quiet cabin, roomy reclining rear seat and ample luggage space suit long family trips; rear amenities are thin below the top trim.
Smooth, quiet and easy in traffic with light steering, but the 2.0T/8-speed can hesitate from a stop and stop/start restarts are noticeable.
EPA ratings in the low-to-mid 20s combined make it costlier per mile than most compact SUV rivals.
A 37.7-ft turning circle and good upright visibility make it easy to place, though it is long for the class and Area View is top-trim only.
Rated to tow 1,500 lb with a large cargo hold; the 184-hp engine strains with loads.
A comfort-oriented family crossover with middling reliability and no fleet reputation for hard use.
Cargo tie-down hooks, 12V outlets, roof rails on most trims and an accessory hitch, but no onboard AC power or work-oriented upfit ecosystem.
Quiet, composed highway manners and a comfortable ride; ACC with Stop & Go from SEL; modest fuel economy limits range.
4Motion with Active Control drive modes (snow/off-road) and roof rails handle gravel and snowy trailheads; modest clearance and 1,500-lb tow limit keep it pavement-biased.
Class-leading cargo space, 40/20/40 sliding split rear seat with pass-through and roof rails make bulky gear easy.
9Driving ExperienceMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.21C
One of the better-handling small SUVs: feels lighter than its size on winding roads, with firm, composed body control.
Light, quick and confidence-inspiring steering that is better than the class norm but not GTI-direct.
Brakes are progressive and easy to modulate with competitive stopping performance.
The 184-hp 2.0T is smooth but slow, with a lazy kickdown from the 8-speed and some hesitation from a stop.
Engine is well isolated at cruise and only becomes audible when revved hard.
Mid-pack turning circle for a compact SUV.
Upright seating with a commanding view, good adjustment and straightforward physical controls (before the 2022 refresh's touch-sensitive panels).
Composed and pleasant chassis, but the slow powertrain keeps it from being engaging.
10Value & Market PositionOne of the Tiguan's strongest categories.2.26C
For 2020 VW made forward-collision AEB with pedestrian detection and blind-spot/rear-traffic alert standard (a $450 option in 2019), and FWD models carry a standard third row; the SE adds heated seats, keyless access and wireless charging. Competitive, though the S still has a small screen and cloth seats.
Low entry and volume-trim pricing plus class-leading cargo space and an optional third row give good content per dollar, but the 184-hp 2.0T is slow, fuel economy trails rivals and weak resale erodes the sticker advantage.
Five trims from S to SEL Premium R-Line, FWD or 4Motion on most, and a two- or three-row choice give unusual seating flexibility for the class, but there is one engine and no hybrid, and the lineup shrank from seven trims in 2019.
VW's US best-seller at just over 100,000 units in a pandemic year, but a fraction of RAV4/CR-V volume and down 8% year on year.
The 'German engineering' halo gives the Tiguan a near-premium feel, but middling reliability perception and below-average resale keep VW neutral rather than aspirational among mainstream SUV brands.
Through 2020 VW ran recurring cash allowances and 0%-type financing on the Tiguan, especially during the spring pandemic shutdown, so buyers could routinely buy well under sticker.
MY2020 is the third US year of the 2018-launch second generation on the MQB platform — mid-cycle, still current, with the facelift arriving for 2022 and the next generation not until 2025.
Well reviewed for space, comfort and safety, and a U.S. News family-award finalist, but rarely the pick of a comparison test because of its slow powertrain and fuel economy.
