The verdict
A struggling compact suv, strong on safety and held back by performance.
The all-new 2025 Tiguan is a well-equipped, sharp-handling compact SUV with a rich cabin, a roomy back seat and a full driver-assist suite on every trim from $30,920. It trades away a lot to get there, though: one 201-hp engine that takes 8.6 seconds to reach 60 mph, no hybrid, just 26.5 cu ft of cargo space and a 1,800-lb tow limit. Ownership is weak too, with a 4-year/50,000-mile powertrain warranty and resale value well behind Honda and Toyota. It suits buyers who want a nice interior and a car that's enjoyable to drive more than they want maximum space or fuel economy.
Jump to scoresStrengths
- Full safety tech on every trim
- Roomy back seat and excellent front seats
- Sharp price with generous standard equipment
What holds it back
- Small cargo hold for the class
- Weak warranty and resale value
- Slow, strained engine

Detailed scoring by subject
1Performance & PowertrainThe Tiguan's lowest-graded category.0.00F
MY2025 is the US launch year of the third-generation (CT1) Tiguan, and every trim uses the updated EA888 2.0T at 201 hp (up 17 hp from the outgoing 184-hp car). The 268-hp SEL R-Line Turbo did not arrive until MY2026, so there is no higher-output option this year.
The volume 4Motion configuration gets a 221 lb-ft torque rating versus 207 lb-ft for front-drive cars; either way it sits in the lower third of the SUV band, though the low-rpm turbo torque helps around town.
Two independent instrumented tests of the 201-hp 4Motion car land at 8.6–8.7 s, slower than the turbocharged CX-5 and the RAV4 Hybrid and roughly level with a CR-V 1.5T.
The 2.0T is smooth at cruise and avoids CVT drone, but at full throttle testers found it strained and short on urgency, with the extra 17 hp not felt much given the heavier new body. Generally smooth with coarse notes under load — mid-band.
A conventional 8-speed torque-converter automatic on every trim — smooth and well matched to the turbo's torque, with no CVT rubber-band feel. Not as quick-witted as a dual-clutch and sometimes slow to kick down in efficiency-biased modes.
The new-generation 4Motion Tiguan is rated for 1,800 lbs (FWD 1,500 lbs) — enough for a small utility trailer but well short of the 3,500 lbs a RAV4 or Tucson can pull.
4Motion AWD is a ~$1,500 option on every trim and standard on the SEL R-Line, with drive-mode selection including snow/off-road settings. It is an on-demand, front-biased clutch-pack system with no low range or lockers, so it earns a solid mid-band score.
A pavement-oriented crossover with roughly 7 inches of ground clearance, no skid plates, no locking differentials and no off-road trim — fine for gravel roads and snowy driveways, little more.
For 2025 the US Tiguan has exactly one powertrain — the 201-hp 2.0T with 8-speed automatic — with no hybrid, PHEV or higher-output option (the 268-hp tune arrives for 2026, and Europe's eHybrid is not sold here). Take-it-or-leave-it against hybrid-equipped RAV4, CR-V, Tucson and Sportage.
2Efficiency & RangeOne of the Tiguan's weakest categories.1.29D
The volume 4Motion configuration is EPA-rated 25 MPG combined — mid-pack among gas compact SUVs, a couple of MPG behind AWD CR-V/RAV4 gas equivalents and far behind hybrid rivals. Front-drive versions do better at 28–29 MPG.
City economy is the weakest figure for the AWD car, with no hybrid assist to recover stop-and-go losses.
The tall 8-speed gearing keeps highway economy respectable; MotorWeek observed 29.5 mpg in real-world testing.
A 15.6-gallon tank at 25 MPG gives an EPA range of about 390 miles — adequate, but well short of hybrid rivals that clear 500 miles.
EPA's annual fuel-cost estimate for the 4Motion car is $2,700 on regular gas — a recurring penalty versus hybrid compact SUVs.
Every 2025 Tiguan variant is certified on regular gasoline; the premium-recommended 268-hp tune did not exist until 2026, so the whole 2025 lineup runs on 87 octane.
3SafetyThe Tiguan's best-graded category.3.03B
The redesigned third-generation 2025 Tiguan earned NHTSA's top five-star overall rating, though its frontal and rollover sub-ratings are four stars rather than five.
Good in small-overlap front and the updated side test, but Poor in the updated moderate-overlap front test because the rear-seat dummy's shoulder belt rode too high and the lap belt slid onto the abdomen. That Poor result rules out any 2025 Top Safety Pick award.
IQ.DRIVE is standard on every 2025 Tiguan trim from the base S up, so AEB with pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise with stop-and-go, lane centering, blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are all on the volume trim.
Standard Front Assist earned Good in both of IIHS's current front-crash-prevention evaluations — the tougher vehicle-to-vehicle 2.0 test and the pedestrian test — which is top-band performance for the class.
Blind Spot Monitor and Rear Traffic Alert are standard on all trims, and the third-generation car adds an exit warning for opening doors into traffic. Coverage is mainly alert-based rather than active steering intervention, so it sits just below the top of the band.
Lane Assist and Travel Assist lane centering are standard, and the capacitive steering wheel cuts down on false hands-off nags. Reviewers still describe some wander on curves and faded markings, typical of VW's implementation.
Travel Assist combines full-speed adaptive cruise with stop-and-go and lane centering as a standard feature on every trim, with predictive speed adaptation on higher trims. It is well integrated, though not class-leading in refinement.
No hands-free highway system is offered on any 2025 Tiguan. Travel Assist requires hands on the wheel at all times.
The volume S and SE trims' LED headlights rate only Acceptable at IIHS. Only the SEL R-Line Turbo's LED projector setup earns Good, while curve-adaptive lighting and high-beam assist are standard across the range.
The relatively upright glasshouse gives good forward and side sightlines. The third-generation car's thicker rear pillars and more raked tailgate create a rear-quarter blind zone, and the 360-degree Area View camera that would offset it comes only on upper trims.
IIHS rates the LATCH hardware Good overall, and the sliding, reclining rear bench helps with rear-facing seats. Full LATCH is limited to the two outboard positions, and three seats across is tight in a compact SUV.
4Space & ComfortOne of the Tiguan's weakest categories.1.29D
MY2025 is the US launch year of the third-generation (CT1) Tiguan, which drops the outgoing US long-wheelbase car's optional third row; every trim (S, SE, SE R-Line Black, SEL R-Line) is a two-row five-seater.
Mid-pack front headroom for a compact SUV; the panoramic sunroof (standard on SEL R-Line, optional on SE R-Line Black) costs 1.3 in. The volume SE goes without it.
Front legroom trails CR-V and RAV4 (41+ in) and sits near the bottom of the SUV band; Consumer Reports also noted the plastic console side can crowd the driver's right knee.
Second-row headroom is excellent for the class thanks to the boxy rear roofline, actually exceeding the front row; the sunroof trims it to 38.4 in.
Second-row legroom is a genuine strength — equal to front legroom and above most compact-SUV rivals; Consumer Reports found the rear seat roomy with good under-thigh support.
No third row is offered on any 2025 US Tiguan — the previous generation's optional 7-seat layout was discontinued with the redesign, leaving three-row duty to the Atlas. Scored in the low band per guidance.
MY2025 launch figures put cargo behind the rear seat at 26.5 cu ft — at the bottom of the compact-SUV pack, well behind CR-V and RAV4 — though CR still fit four large suitcases. VW publishes a larger 33.8 cu ft figure for the 2026 car on the same body, which suggests a remeasurement; the 2025 published figure is used here.
Maximum cargo volume is modest for the segment; Consumer Reports likewise found the seats-folded space lags rivals. As with 4.2.1, the MY2025 published figure is used rather than the larger MY2026 restatement.
Competitive everyday storage: the gear selector moved to a column stalk, freeing console space for a wireless-charging tray and cupholders, with usable door bins and a 60/40 folding rear seat. Nothing standout — no onboard AC power, and the overall cargo box is small for the class.
Consumer Reports rates the front seats among the best in the class, with good padding, lateral support and four-way lumbar; the rear bench is roomy with good thigh support. The SEL R-Line adds ventilated, 10-chamber pneumatic massage front seats.
The tuning favors handling: CR calls the ride very firm with pronounced impacts over larger bumps, and TTAC found it stiff even in Comfort mode though never punishing. US News found it comfortable on 20-inch wheels, so it is composed but firmer than CR-V/RAV4.
Wind and road noise are well controlled per CR, but the 2.0T sounds strained under hard acceleration and TTAC heard tire roar on coarse pavement and some A-pillar wind. Above average for a mainstream compact SUV, not class-leading.
Heated front seats are standard on every trim and the volume SE adds remote start and dual-zone climate, but ventilated/massaging front seats, heated rear outboard seats and three-zone climate are reserved for the SEL R-Line — key extras on mid trims and up.
5Cost of OwnershipMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.28C
MY2025 is the US launch year of the third-generation Tiguan; the base S FWD opens just under $31,000 delivered, toward the affordable end of the compact-SUV segment and below the entry CR-V and RAV4.
The SE is the volume trim — it adds the power liftgate, remote start, 19-in wheels and power driver seat most buyers want over the S — typically specified with the $1,500 4Motion option.
Edmunds' True Cost to Own for the 2025 SE projects about $5,100 in combined maintenance and repairs, nudged up slightly for German-brand parts/labor exposure on the EA888 2.0T once the 4-year warranty lapses; still mid-pack for the class, helped by two years of included scheduled maintenance.
Industry projections for the new-generation Tiguan put five-year retention around half of MSRP — better than the outgoing generation's weak residuals but still well below the CR-V/RAV4 benchmark of ~60%+.
VW's New Vehicle Limited Warranty runs 4 years/50,000 miles, a year and 14,000 miles beyond the 3/36 mainstream norm of Toyota, Honda and Nissan.
VW publishes no standalone powertrain warranty — the engine and transmission share the 4-year/50,000-mile term — the shortest powertrain coverage among mainstream compact SUVs (5/60 norm; 10/100 at Hyundai/Kia).
Two years/20,000 miles of scheduled maintenance (the first two services), three years of 24/7 roadside assistance and five years of Car-Net Remote Access come standard — genuinely multi-year, but a shorter maintenance window than ToyotaCare or Hyundai's 3/36 program.
$35,220 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (50% retained, or about $17,610) leaves about $17,610 in depreciation. Add the projected $5,300 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $22,910 in total.
6Reliability & QualityGrades below the middle of the scale.1.57D
2025 is the launch year of the third-generation (Mk3) US Tiguan, and Consumer Reports forecasts it as less reliable than the average new car, citing VW's brand score, the prior generation's launch-year record, and redesign-year risk. With no owner-survey history yet, the forecast sits just below the average band.
Volkswagen has sat in the lower third of Consumer Reports brand reliability rankings for several years and below industry average in J.D. Power's Vehicle Dependability Study, with complaints concentrated in electronics and infotainment rather than catastrophic failures.
The launch-year 2025 Tiguan has drawn several campaigns, including a sizable body-control-module software recall that can stall the engine and cut lights and the rear camera, plus a front-passenger airbag non-deployment recall — safety-system and stall issues place it at the bottom of the typical band, though both are low-volume or software-fixable rather than mechanical.
The EA888 evo4 2.0T four with an eight-speed torque-converter automatic belongs to a very high-volume, long-running engine family, but earlier EA888 evolutions carry documented water-pump, timing-chain-tensioner and oil-consumption history, and evo4 has no high-mileage US record yet.
The redesigned cabin is a clear strength: broad soft-touch coverage on upper surfaces, solid switchgear, a large center display and the return of physical steering-wheel buttons give it a richer feel than most mainstream compact SUVs at its price.
Physical assembly is generally solid and structurally quiet, but 2025 is the first build year of a new Mexican-built generation, and early complaints and the BCM software recall point to launch-year electronics teething rather than panel or trim defects.
Volkswagen's roughly 600-plus US dealers give solid metro coverage but thinner rural reach than Toyota, Honda, Chevrolet or Ford, and service satisfaction is mid-pack; two years/20,000 miles of complimentary scheduled maintenance offsets some of that early in ownership.
EA888 commonality and a large VW aftermarket keep parts easy to source, but German-brand component pricing and longer labor times push typical repair and maintenance costs above the mainstream compact-SUV average.
7Technology & InfotainmentOne of the Tiguan's strongest categories.2.70B-
The new MIB4 head unit brings a 12.9-inch freestanding touchscreen to every trim including the volume SE, up from the outgoing car's 8.0-inch base screen; the SEL R-Line gets 15 inches.
The touchscreen is responsive and easy to read and the new console rotary knob makes drive-mode and volume changes easy, but climate moved to the touchscreen and a capacitive slider, and some functions demand menu diving.
Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard on every 2025 trim from the base S up — top band.
A voice assistant is standard with MIB4, but trim guides list built-in navigation only with the SEL R-Line's 15-inch display, so the volume SE relies on phone projection. Functional, mid-band.
The standard system is adequate; a 12-speaker Harman Kardon premium system is offered only on the top SEL R-Line, so the volume buyer cannot get it.
The 10.25-inch configurable Digital Cockpit Pro is standard on every trim — no analog base version — though smaller than the 12.3-inch clusters in Tucson and Sportage.
MIB4 supports over-the-air infotainment/map updates, but VW runs no whole-vehicle feature-adding OTA program on its US combustion models — middle band.
The myVW app with Car-Net covers remote start, lock/unlock, locate and status, but features become subscription-gated after the trial and there is no phone-as-key.
Wireless phone charging and multiple USB-C ports are standard on every trim — good provision — but there is no household AC outlet.
KESSY keyless access with push-button start is standard, the SE adds remote start and a power liftgate, and hands-free Easy Open is limited to the SEL R-Line. There is no phone-as-key, which keeps it out of the top band.
A rear camera is standard and parking sensors are fitted, but the Area View 360-degree camera is standard only on the top SEL R-Line — classic middle band.
A head-up display is standard on both the SE R-Line Black and SEL R-Line — two of the four trims, reaching further down the range than most mainstream rivals — but not on the volume SE.
8Use-Case FitGrades below the middle of the scale.1.59D
Generous rear legroom and headroom, easy entry/exit and Good IIHS LATCH usability make car seats easy, but the small 26.5 cu ft cargo hold is tight for a stroller plus groceries.
IQ.DRIVE (AEB, Travel Assist, blind-spot, rear traffic) is standard on every trim and NHTSA gives 5 stars overall, but IIHS rated the updated moderate-overlap test Poor because of rear-passenger restraint performance — a family-specific weakness — and it earned no Top Safety Pick.
Class-best front seats and a roomy rear bench suit long trips, but rear amenities (heated rear seats, three-zone climate) are top-trim only and luggage space with the seats up is among the smallest in the segment.
Light steering, a smooth 8-speed in gentle driving and standard Travel Assist make for easy commuting, but testers flagged laggy throttle tip-in, a brake-pedal dead spot and a firm ride.
25 MPG combined for the 4Motion car (28 FWD) on regular fuel is average-to-below for a compact SUV, and there is no hybrid option against the RAV4/CR-V hybrids.
A 184.4-in footprint and 38.1-ft turning circle are manageable, with a standard rear camera, but the 360-degree camera is top-trim only and thicker rear pillars hurt the view out.
Tow ratings of just 1,800 lbs (4Motion) / 1,500 lbs (FWD) and a small cargo hold make it unsuited to real work beyond light errands.
A brand-new generation with no fleet track record, leatherette upholstery and piano-black/soft-touch trim oriented to comfort rather than abuse; the EA888 2.0T itself is a well-proven engine.
Few work provisions: no onboard AC power, basic cargo tie-downs, a power liftgate from SE up and a modest accessory catalog (racks, hitch).
Excellent front seats, good wind/road isolation and standard Travel Assist make a solid tourer with ~390 miles of range, held back by a firm ride and an engine that drones when worked.
Optional 4Motion AWD with off-road/snow modes and ~7 in of clearance handles gravel and snowy trailheads, but there is no off-road trim, a 1,800-lb tow limit and no onboard power for camping.
A 60/40 folding rear seat opens a usable but small 58.9 cu ft hold, below most rivals; roof rails and a hitch are available, so normal luggage fits but bulky gear is a squeeze.
9Driving ExperienceMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.27C
Handling is the third-gen Tiguan's standout: CR found it more nimble and tied-down than most rivals with minimal body roll, and TTAC called it more engaging than CR-V or RAV4.
Quick and responsive with sharp turn-in, but light in normal modes and only firming up in Sport; precise rather than communicative.
Dry stopping distances are competitive and TTAC found the brakes stout, but CR measured long wet stops and several testers disliked a dead spot at the top of the pedal.
The 201-hp 2.0T and 8-speed are smooth when driven gently, but reviewers flagged laggy throttle tip-in, hesitation on re-acceleration and abrupt power delivery after delayed downshifts.
Quiet at cruise, but the four-cylinder sounds strained and coarse under hard acceleration — audible, not intrusive.
A mid-pack turning diameter for a compact SUV — tighter than many mid-size SUVs, slightly wider than the tightest compacts.
Good seat adjustment with four-way lumbar, easy ingress and a stalk-mounted shifter, but the wheel can block turn-signal and headlight icons, the console side crowds the driver's knee, and haptic controls add reach-and-look moments.
One of the more engaging chassis in the class, but the 201-hp engine's lag and strained sound (8.6–8.9 s to 60) blunt the fun; pleasant rather than enthusiast-recommended.
10Value & Market PositionOne of the Tiguan's strongest categories.2.68C+
The $30,920 base S already carries IQ.DRIVE driver assists, a 12.9-inch touchscreen, the 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit Pro, KESSY keyless entry, two-zone climate, LED headlights and 10 airbags — content rivals often hold for a mid trim. The power liftgate, remote start and power driver seat wait for the SE.
Strong cabin and tech content for the price, but the money buys a single 201-hp 2.0T with no hybrid, and the ownership side — about 50% five-year retention and a 4-yr/50k powertrain warranty — trims the sticker advantage. Fair value, not a Tucson/Sportage-level bargain.
Four well-spaced trims with FWD or 4Motion on the lower three cover the budget span, but for 2025 there is exactly one powertrain (no hybrid, no higher-output tune — the 268-hp version arrived for 2026), the SE R-Line Black FWD had delayed availability, and the new generation is five-seat only.
Still Volkswagen's best-selling US model, but calendar-2025 volume fell about 17% during the generation changeover to under 80,000 units — a fraction of RAV4/CR-V volume in the segment and a declining rather than rising trajectory.
Volkswagen reads as neutral in the US: a German-engineering association and enthusiast following, offset by below-average reliability perception and weak resale. Held level with the 2026 Tiguan and other VWs in this dataset.
VW leans on lease and APR programs and the Tiguan transacts under sticker, a real buyer benefit — though as a just-launched generation the 2025 car saw somewhat less aggressive giveaways than the outgoing model.
MY2025 is the US debut of the third-generation Tiguan on MQB Evo with the MIB4 electronics architecture — an all-new car with no redesign risk for buyers.
Reviewers praised the new Tiguan's cabin quality, refinement, ride and larger screens while consistently marking down the strained 201-hp powertrain, touch-slider climate controls, no hybrid and the lost third row — well reviewed but rarely the pick of the class, with no major US award.
