The verdict
A struggling compact suv, strong on ownership and held back by performance.
The refreshed 2022 Tiguan is a roomy, comfortable and well-protected compact SUV, with an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ and one of the lowest entry prices in the class at $27,190. A small third row is standard on FWD models. The trade-offs are real, though. The lone 184-hp engine needs 8–9 seconds to reach 60 mph, towing tops out at 1,500 lbs, the 25 MPG combined trails the CR-V and RAV4, and the 4-year/50,000-mile powertrain warranty is short for the class. Buy it for space, ride and safety, not for speed, fuel savings or long-term peace of mind.

Detailed scoring by subject
1Performance & PowertrainThe Tiguan's lowest-graded category.0.00F
2022 is the mid-cycle refresh year of the second-generation (MQB A2) Tiguan, but the US powertrain carried over: one EA888 2.0T at 184 hp on every trim, low for a compact SUV.
221 lb-ft arrives low in the rev range, giving adequate around-town pull despite modest horsepower.
Instrumented tests of the 2022 184-hp 4Motion Tiguan range 8.1–9.1 s, slower than most turbocharged compact-SUV rivals.
The 2.0T is smooth and quiet at cruise with useful low-end torque, but runs out of breath at higher speeds and feels labored when passing with a load.
The 8-speed automatic shifts smoothly but can be slow to kick down and hesitant from a stop, especially with stop/start active.
Rated at just 1,500 lbs, at the bottom of the compact-SUV range where rivals offer 1,500–3,500 lbs.
4Motion on-demand AWD is optional on S/SE and standard on SE R-Line Black and SEL R-Line, with 4Motion Active Control drive modes (On-Road, Snow, Off-Road, Custom Off-Road).
Off-Road mode with hill descent control helps on dirt trails, but roughly 7.9 in of clearance and no skid plates or off-road trim make it pavement-oriented.
One engine and one transmission across all trims, with no hybrid or plug-in option while rivals offer hybrids and PHEVs.
2Efficiency & RangeOne of the Tiguan's weakest categories.1.29D
The volume SE 4Motion is EPA-rated 25 MPG combined; FWD reaches 26 and R-Line 4Motion 24 — middling for a non-hybrid compact SUV.
22 MPG city is typical of turbocharged gas compact SUVs with AWD.
29 MPG highway is about average for the segment.
Computed from the 4Motion's 15.9-gal tank and 25 MPG combined; FWD (15.3 gal × 26 MPG) gives a similar ~398 mi.
EPA estimate at 15,000 mi/yr on regular fuel.
Runs on regular unleaded across all trims.
3SafetyOne of the Tiguan's strongest categories.2.47C+
NHTSA published only partial results for 2022 (side 5 stars, rollover 4 stars; overall and frontal Not Rated). Per the item rule, the value is the latest tested year of this generation: the unchanged 2023 body rates 4 stars overall.
The 2022 Tiguan earned an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award, and IIHS rates every crashworthiness test Good. That puts it in the award band, held back only by its Acceptable headlights.
On the 2022 refresh, Front Assist AEB with pedestrian monitoring, Blind Spot Monitor and Rear Traffic Alert are standard on every trim. On the base S, adaptive cruise, Lane Assist and Travel Assist come only in the optional IQ.DRIVE package; the full suite is standard from the volume SE trim up.
IIHS rates the vehicle-to-vehicle AEB Superior and the daytime pedestrian AEB Advanced, but nighttime pedestrian detection is only Basic. That is the 'weaker night/pedestrian' profile of the middle band.
Blind Spot Monitor and Rear Traffic Alert are standard on every trim, and IIHS lists rear automatic braking as standard. The steering-intervening Active Blind Spot Monitor comes with IQ.DRIVE (standard SE+, optional S), and there is no safe-exit warning.
Lane Assist and Travel Assist lane centering are standard from the SE up and optional on the S. The 2022 refresh's IQ.DRIVE pairs centering with a capacitive steering wheel for hands-on detection, which cuts nuisance nags. Centering is functional on marked highways, but no Tiguan-specific test of its smoothness was found.
ACC with Stop & Go is integrated with lane centering in Travel Assist, standard on the volume SE and above and optional on the S. It is capable full-speed-range highway assist, though it lacks predictive, navigation-based speed adaptation.
No hands-free driving system is offered. Travel Assist is a hands-on system that requires steering-wheel contact.
Both 2022 headlight variants rate only Acceptable at IIHS: the LED reflectors without high-beam assist and the LED projectors with high-beam assist on the top trim. No version earns Good.
The second-generation Tiguan's upright glasshouse, large side windows and tall rear window give good sightlines for a compact SUV. The 360-degree Area View camera is limited to the top SEL R-Line trim.
IIHS rates LATCH ease of use Acceptable. The sliding second row helps with installation and rear-facing clearance, but three seats across a compact SUV bench is tight.
4Space & ComfortOne of the Tiguan's weakest categories.1.27D
2022 is the mid-cycle refresh of the second-generation (2018–2024) Tiguan, but the cabin is unchanged. The volume SE 4Motion is a two-row five-seater, and a small 50/50 third row is standard on FWD models.
Front headroom is about average for a compact SUV.
Front legroom is short for the class on paper, though reviewers do not report drivers feeling cramped.
The upright roofline gives generous second-row headroom.
Rear legroom is competitive, and the second row slides fore and aft to trade legroom for cargo space.
The volume 4Motion configuration has no third row. Where one is fitted (standard on FWD, optional on 4Motion), it offers about 27.9 in of legroom and 33.8 in of headroom, so it suits small children only.
The two-row layout has among the largest cargo spaces behind the second row in the compact class.
Maximum cargo space is near the top of the compact SUV class.
Practical touches include a sliding, 40/20/40 split-folding second row, a wireless-charging cubby (SE and up) and decent door pockets. There are no standout storage innovations.
The front seats are firm and supportive, and the sliding, reclining rear bench is comfortable for adults. The volume SE has leatherette upholstery and a power driver's seat, while the S has manual cloth seats.
Reviewers consistently describe a smooth, composed ride with good body control. The 19–20 in wheels on R-Line trims add some firmness.
The cabin is quiet at highway speed; the main intrusion is some engine noise when the 2.0T is revved.
Heated front seats are standard on every 2022 trim, and the SE adds dual-zone Climatronic. A heated wheel and ventilated front seats are reserved for the top SEL R-Line.
5Cost of OwnershipThe Tiguan's best-graded category.2.67C+
The refreshed 2022 Tiguan S opened at $25,995 before destination, among the lowest entry prices in the compact-SUV class for a model with an optional third row.
The SE is the volume trim. It adds IQ.DRIVE, a larger touchscreen and other upgrades over the S, and buyers commonly add the $1,500 4Motion AWD. That price matches or undercuts comparable CR-V EX / RAV4 XLE AWD grades.
Carefree Coverage pays for the first two scheduled services. Even so, German-brand labor rates and known EA888 out-of-warranty items (water pump/thermostat housing) push the 5-year cost above Toyota/Honda rivals. The sources disagree widely, so this is a midpoint estimate.
The 2022 was bought in the supply-constrained 2021–22 market, and its used values held up far better than the nameplate norm (~48–52%). Two independent sources put 5-year retention near 60%.
VW's 4-year/50,000-mile New Vehicle Limited Warranty beats the 3/36 coverage common among mainstream rivals.
VW has no separate powertrain warranty. The engine and transmission fall under the same 4/50 warranty, which is shorter than the 5/60 mainstream norm and far short of Hyundai/Kia's 10/100.
Carefree Coverage includes 2 years/20,000 miles of scheduled maintenance, 24/7 roadside assistance and five years of Car-Net Remote Access at no charge. That is genuinely multi-year, but it covers only the first two services.
$32,190 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (59% retained, or about $18,992) leaves about $13,198 in depreciation. Add the projected $6,500 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $19,698 in total.
6Reliability & QualityMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.77C-
2022 is the refresh year of the second-generation (2018-2024) US Tiguan. J.D. Power rates it only 'Average' on quality & reliability and Consumer Reports rates it less reliable than other 2022 vehicles, with owner-reported minor engine issues, so it sits at the low end of the mixed-signal band.
Volkswagen has sat in the lower third of Consumer Reports' brand reliability rankings and below the industry average in J.D. Power's Vehicle Dependability Study for several consecutive years, driven mostly by electrical, infotainment and driver-assist faults rather than catastrophic failures.
MY2022 is the most recalled year of its generation's late run: five NHTSA campaigns, including a safety-relevant rear suspension knuckle corrosion/cracking recall and a loose front brake-pipe nut, plus infotainment memory, rearview camera software and accessory-spoiler campaigns. Unit counts are small and nothing is powertrain or fire related, keeping it out of the systemic band.
The 2022 US Tiguan's only powertrain is the 184-hp EA888 Gen3 2.0T with an Aisin eight-speed automatic, a long-running, high-volume pairing with no systemic failure pattern. Documented water-pump/thermostat-housing coolant leaks, direct-injection carbon buildup and CR owner reports of oil leaks and mount issues keep it out of the proven-durable band.
The cabin is tidy with soft-touch upper surfaces, but reviewers note abundant hard plastics lower down and criticize the touch-capacitive climate panel and haptic steering-wheel controls introduced with the 2022 refresh, which feel less premium than physical switchgear.
A mature body built at VW's Puebla, Mexico plant with generally consistent, quiet assembly; owner complaints center on infotainment and camera software, but the refresh-year 'Average' J.D. Power score and the spoiler-attachment and brake-pipe assembly recalls signal a few build lapses.
Volkswagen's roughly 600-650 US dealers give solid metro coverage but thinner rural reach than Toyota, Honda, Ford or Chevrolet; J.D. Power rates the Tiguan's dealership experience 'Average'. Two years/20,000 miles of included scheduled maintenance helps early ownership.
A high-volume generation and the ubiquitous EA888 engine mean parts are plentiful and the aftermarket is deep, but German-brand parts pricing and labor times keep typical repair costs above the compact SUV average.
7Technology & InfotainmentGrades below the middle of the scale.1.50D
The 2022 refresh brought MIB3 infotainment with an 8 in screen from the SE up, which covers the volume trim. That is small by later-2020s standards, and the base S keeps a 6.5 in unit.
MIB3 is reasonably quick with a logical menu structure, but the screen is small. The Climatronic Touch panel and the touch-sensitive steering-wheel controls added in the 2022 refresh draw criticism as fiddly.
Wireless App-Connect (CarPlay/Android Auto) is standard from the SE up, which covers the volume trim. The base S is wired only.
Native navigation is fitted only to the SEL R-Line. MIB3 adds natural-voice control from the SE, but it is basic, so most owners rely on phone projection.
The base audio is adequate. A 480 W, 10-speaker premium system is fitted to the top SEL R-Line only; sources disagree on whether 2022 units carry the Fender or the Harman Kardon brand.
An 8 in Digital Cockpit is standard on every 2022 trim, and the SEL R-Line upgrades to the configurable 10.25 in Digital Cockpit Pro.
MIB3-era Tiguans receive no meaningful whole-vehicle over-the-air updates; software updates are applied at the dealer.
The Car-Net app handles remote lock/unlock, vehicle status and parking location. Remote start and Wi-Fi need a paid plan after the trial, and there is no digital key.
USB-C ports are fitted front and rear (four on the SE), and wireless charging is standard on SE and up. There is no household AC outlet.
KESSY keyless access with push-button start is standard on every 2022 trim, and remote start comes from the SE. The power tailgate arrives on the SE, but the hands-free liftgate is SEL R-Line only, and there is no phone-as-key.
A rearview camera is standard. Front and rear parking sensors arrive on the SE R-Line Black, while the Area View 360-degree camera and Park Assist are SEL R-Line only, so the volume SE has the camera alone.
No head-up display was offered on the US second-generation Tiguan, including the refreshed 2022 model.
8Use-Case FitMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.72C-
Large rear door openings, a sliding second row and a big cargo hold make family duty easy. LATCH usability is only Acceptable, and the optional third row fits small kids only.
It earned an IIHS Top Safety Pick+, and AEB plus blind-spot monitoring are standard. NHTSA gave no overall rating for 2022 (side 5 stars, rollover 4), and IQ.DRIVE is only optional on the S.
The ride is comfortable, the cabin quiet and luggage room ample in the two-row layout. Rear amenities are thin below the SEL R-Line, and the roughly 400-mile range is middling.
Light, quick steering and a smooth ride make it easy in town. The 8-speed's hesitation off the line and occasionally abrupt stop/start detract.
At 25 MPG combined (4Motion) it trails gas rivals such as the CR-V and RAV4, which are near 30 MPG. It does run on regular fuel.
A compact footprint, a 37.7 ft turning circle and an upright greenhouse help in town. Parking sensors start at the SE R-Line Black and the 360-degree camera at the SEL R-Line, so the volume SE has neither.
A 1,500 lb tow rating and a modest 184-hp engine limit it to light duty, though the cargo hold is roomy for a compact.
This is a family crossover with no fleet or hard-use reputation, and VW's reliability reputation is mid-pack.
It offers roof rails, cargo tie-down hooks and a dealer tow hitch, but no onboard power or work-oriented features.
Quiet, composed highway manners and Travel Assist (standard from SE) reduce fatigue, but its range of roughly 400 miles is unremarkable.
4Motion with Active Control (including an off-road mode) and about 7.9 in of ground clearance handle gravel and snow. The 1,500 lb tow limit restricts hauling toys.
A 73.4 cu ft maximum hold, a sliding 40/20/40 second row with pass-through, and standard roof rails make it strong for the class.
9Driving ExperienceOne of the Tiguan's strongest categories.2.22C
Handling is capable and secure with good body control; reviewers put it level with the Mazda CX-5 in corners.
The steering is light, quick and precise, but offers little feedback.
The brakes are easy to modulate with a progressive pedal, and testers rate them highly.
The 184-hp 2.0T, carried over through the 2022 refresh, is smooth but leisurely. The 8-speed automatic can hesitate off the line and on tip-in.
The engine is well isolated at cruise, with some audible strain when revved.
The turning circle is mid-pack for a compact SUV.
A commanding, adjustable driving position and good sightlines are offset by the touch-capacitive climate panel and steering-wheel controls introduced with the 2022 refresh.
A composed chassis is undermined by a slow powertrain; this is a sensible, well-rounded crossover rather than an engaging one.
10Value & Market PositionMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.84C-
With the MY2022 refresh, the S gained an 8-inch Digital Cockpit, keyless access with push-button start, USB-C ports, 17-inch alloys and a standard third row on FWD models. However, it keeps a small 6.5-inch touchscreen, and IQ.DRIVE is optional on the S. During the chip shortage, VW also removed blind-spot monitoring/RCTA from some S/SE/SE R-Line Black builds.
List prices undercut the class leaders, and its space and optional third row are rare in a compact SUV. Against that, the 184-hp 2.0T is slow, there is no hybrid, and the chip-shortage feature cuts reduced what buyers got. Overall it is fair value rather than a bargain.
There are four trims, FWD or 4Motion on the lower three, and a choice of two or three rows, which gives more seating flexibility than most compacts. There is only one engine and no hybrid/PHEV option.
It was VW's best-selling US model in 2022, but volume fell about 19% year on year during the supply crunch and was a fraction of RAV4/CR-V sales.
Volkswagen has a 'German engineering' halo and an affordable-premium feel. Middling reliability perception and historically weak resale keep it a neutral mainstream brand rather than an aspirational one.
MY2022 sold through the 2021–22 chip shortage, when incentives nearly disappeared and many dealers charged market adjustments. Discounts on the Tiguan were thin until late 2022.
MY2022 was the mid-cycle refresh of the second generation, which launched in 2018. It brought new styling, LED lighting, USB-C ports, an updated interior and IQ.DRIVE availability. The platform was five years old, and the third generation arrived for 2025.
Reviewers praise its space, ride and safety. It sits mid-pack in class rankings and is rarely a comparison-test pick because of slow acceleration and fussy touch controls. The IIHS Top Safety Pick+ is its main award.
