The verdict
A struggling compact suv, strong on safety and held back by performance.
The 2023 Tiguan is a roomy, comfortable and well-mannered compact SUV with a low starting price ($28,245 for the S, about $33,375 for the volume SE 4Motion) and a rare optional third row. The trade-offs are significant: its only engine makes 184 hp and needs about 8.6 seconds to reach 60 mph, it averages 25 MPG combined, it tows just 1,500 lbs and it is expected to keep only about 48% of its value after five years. It suits buyers who care most about ride comfort and space, and who can get a good deal on a used example.

Detailed scoring by subject
1Performance & PowertrainThe Tiguan's lowest-graded category.0.00F
The 2023 Tiguan (second generation, MQB A2, refreshed for 2022) offers one engine, the EA888 2.0T rated 184 hp on every trim; that is low for a compact SUV where 190–250 hp is common.
221 lb-ft arrives low in the rev range, giving reasonable around-town pull despite the modest horsepower.
Instrumented tests of the 184-hp 4Motion Tiguan land between 8.1 and 9.1 s, slower than most turbocharged compact-SUV rivals.
The 2.0T is smooth and quiet at cruise with good low-end torque, but reviewers note it runs out of breath at higher speeds and passing maneuvers feel labored with a full load.
The Aisin 8-speed automatic shifts smoothly but can be slow to kick down and occasionally feels hesitant from a stop, especially with stop/start active.
Rated at just 1,500 lbs, below rivals such as the RAV4/CR-V/Tucson that commonly offer 1,500–3,500 lbs.
4Motion AWD (Haldex-type on-demand) is optional on S/SE and standard on SE R-Line Black and SEL R-Line, with 4Motion Active Control drive modes (On-Road, Snow, Off-Road, Custom Off-Road).
Off-Road mode with hill descent control helps on dirt trails, but about 7.9 in of ground clearance, no skid plates or off-road trim make it pavement-oriented.
One engine and one transmission across all trims, with no hybrid or plug-in option while rivals offer hybrids and PHEVs.
2Efficiency & RangeOne of the Tiguan's weakest categories.1.29D
The volume SE 4Motion is EPA-rated 25 MPG combined; FWD S reaches 27 and R-Line 4Motion 24 — middling for a non-hybrid compact SUV.
22 MPG city is typical of turbocharged gas compact SUVs with AWD.
29 MPG highway is about average for the segment.
Computed from the 4Motion's 15.9-gal tank and 25 MPG combined rating; FWD (15.3 gal × 26 MPG) gives a similar ~398 mi.
EPA estimate at 15,000 mi/yr on regular fuel.
Runs on regular unleaded across all trims.
3SafetyThe Tiguan's best-graded category.2.39C+
NHTSA rates the 2023 Tiguan four stars overall in both FWD and AWD form. Four-star frontal and four-star rollover results hold it back from five, despite a five-star side result.
Every crashworthiness test IIHS shows for the 2018–24 Tiguan is rated Good, and the 2023 model year carries over the 2022 Top Safety Pick+. It earned no award under the tougher 2023 criteria, and there is no result for the updated side or rear-passenger moderate-overlap tests, so it sits at the top of the 50–79 band rather than in the award band.
Front Assist AEB with pedestrian monitoring, Blind Spot Monitor and Rear Traffic Alert are standard on every 2023 Tiguan. On the base S, adaptive cruise, Lane Assist and Travel Assist come only in the optional IQ.DRIVE package; they are standard from the SE (the volume trim) upward. Key features are optional on the entry trim, which keeps it below the top band.
IIHS rates the vehicle-to-vehicle AEB Superior and daytime pedestrian AEB Advanced, but nighttime pedestrian detection only Basic. That is exactly the 'weaker night/pedestrian' profile of the middle band.
Blind Spot Monitor and Rear Traffic Alert are standard on every trim. The steering-intervening Active Blind Spot Monitor comes with IQ.DRIVE (SE and up, optional on S), and the Tiguan has no safe-exit warning.
Lane Assist and Travel Assist lane centering work on marked highways. The 2023 car detects hands on the wheel by steering torque (not capacitive sensing), which tends to bring repeated hands-on prompts, and neither feature is standard on the base S.
ACC with Stop & Go is combined with lane centering in Travel Assist, a well-integrated highway assist on the volume SE and above. It is optional on the base S and lacks the predictive, navigation-based speed adaptation that later VWs added.
No hands-free driving system is offered. Travel Assist is a hands-on system that warns and then disengages when it detects no steering input.
Both 2023 headlight variants rate only Acceptable at IIHS: the LED reflectors on the S/SE/SE R-Line Black and the LED projectors with high-beam assist on the SEL R-Line. No version earns Good, and automatic high beams come only on the top trim.
The second-generation Tiguan's upright, boxy glasshouse, large side windows and fairly tall rear window give good sightlines for a compact SUV. The 360-degree Area View camera is limited to the top SEL R-Line trim.
IIHS rates LATCH ease of use Acceptable. There are two full LATCH positions, and the center seat has a tether only. The sliding second row helps with installation and rear-facing clearance, but fitting three seats across a compact SUV bench is tight.
4Space & ComfortOne of the Tiguan's weakest categories.1.26D
The volume SE 4Motion is a two-row five-seater; a small 50/50 third row is standard on FWD models and optional on some 4Motion trims.
Front headroom is about average for a compact SUV.
Front legroom is on the short side for the class on paper, though reviewers do not report drivers feeling cramped.
The upright roofline gives generous second-row headroom.
Rear legroom is competitive, and the second row slides fore and aft to trade legroom for cargo.
The volume 4Motion configuration has no third row. Where one is fitted (FWD, or optional on 4Motion S/SE), it offers 27.9 in of legroom and 33.8 in of headroom, so it suits small children only.
Cargo space behind the second row is among the largest in the compact class for the two-row layout.
Maximum cargo space is near the top of the compact SUV class.
Practical touches include a sliding, 40/20/40 split-folding second row, a wireless-charging cubby (SE and up) and decent door pockets. There are no standout storage innovations.
The front seats are supportive in the firm German fashion, and the sliding, reclining rear bench is comfortable for adults. The S trim's cloth seats with manual adjustment are basic.
Reviewers consistently describe a smooth, composed ride with good body control. It is one of the Tiguan's stronger traits, though the 19–20 in R-Line wheels add some firmness.
The cabin is quiet at highway speed; the main intrusion is some engine noise when the 2.0T is revved.
Dual-zone Climatronic and heated front seats arrive at SE. Ventilated leather seats, a heated wheel and three-zone climate are reserved for the top SEL R-Line.
5Cost of OwnershipOne of the Tiguan's strongest categories.2.16C
The 2023 Tiguan S opened the range at $26,950 before destination, toward the cheaper end of the compact-SUV class and well under the RAV4/CR-V base prices of the same year.
The SE is the volume trim: it adds the heated seats, larger screen and keyless access most buyers want over the sparse S, and is commonly bought with $1,500 4Motion AWD. That lands in line with or below equivalent CR-V EX / RAV4 XLE AWD grades.
Routine maintenance on the EA888 2.0T is moderate and the first two services are free under Carefree Coverage, but German-brand repair rates and the engine's known out-of-warranty items (water pump/thermostat housing, PCV) push the combined 5-year figure above Toyota/Honda rivals.
Depreciation is the second-gen Tiguan's weakest ownership metric — the 2023 has already shed close to 40% in three years, well behind CR-V and RAV4, and the arrival of the third generation for 2025 adds further pressure.
VW's 4-year/50,000-mile New Vehicle Limited Warranty beats the 3/36 mainstream norm used by Toyota, Honda, Nissan and Ford.
VW has no standalone powertrain term: engine and transmission are covered by the same 4-year/50,000-mile warranty, shorter than the 5/60 mainstream norm and far below Hyundai/Kia's 10/100.
Carefree Coverage includes two years/20,000 miles of scheduled maintenance plus three years of roadside assistance and a Car-Net trial — genuinely multi-year, but it covers only the first two services and trails Hyundai's 3/36 program or ToyotaCare's breadth.
$33,375 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (48% retained, or about $16,020) leaves about $17,355 in depreciation. Add the projected $6,300 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $23,655 in total.
6Reliability & QualityMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.98C-
2023 is the sixth US model year of the second-generation (2018-2024) Tiguan and the second year after the 2022 refresh. J.D. Power rates it only 'Average' on quality & reliability and Consumer Reports places it below average for 2023 vehicles, flagging powertrain and in-car electronics, so it scores at the low end of the mixed-signal band.
Volkswagen has sat in the lower third of Consumer Reports' brand reliability rankings and below the industry average in J.D. Power's Vehicle Dependability Study for several consecutive years, driven mostly by electrical, infotainment and driver-assist glitches rather than catastrophic failures.
MY2023 carries a single NHTSA campaign, a rearview-camera control-unit software fix shared with 2022 and 2024, with no powertrain, fire or structural recalls. The broader 2018-2024 generation saw typical, non-systemic recall activity (camera, suspension, seat and airbag campaigns, mostly on early years).
The 2023 US Tiguan's only powertrain is the 184-hp EA888 Gen3 2.0T with an Aisin eight-speed automatic, a long-running, high-volume pairing with no systemic failure pattern. It does have documented water-pump/thermostat-housing coolant leaks and direct-injection carbon buildup, and owners report hesitation from a stop, so it stays out of the proven-durable band.
The cabin is tidy and well screwed together with soft-touch upper surfaces, but reviewers note abundant hard plastics lower down and criticize the post-2022-refresh capacitive touch climate and steering-wheel controls, which feel less premium and less precise than physical switchgear.
A mature generation built at VW's Puebla, Mexico plant, with assembly that is generally consistent and structurally quiet; owner complaints center on infotainment and camera software rather than rattles or panel gaps, though the 'Average' J.D. Power score signals more owner-reported problems than the 2024 car.
Volkswagen's roughly 600-650 US dealers give solid metro coverage but thinner rural reach than Toyota, Honda, Ford or Chevrolet, and VW service satisfaction is mid-pack. Two years/20,000 miles of included scheduled maintenance helps early ownership.
A high-volume generation and the ubiquitous EA888 engine mean parts are plentiful and the aftermarket is deep, but German-brand component pricing and labor times keep typical repair costs somewhat above the compact SUV average.
7Technology & InfotainmentGrades below the middle of the scale.1.49D
The volume SE gets VW's 8 in MIB3 Composition Media screen, which is small by later-2020s standards. The base S has a 6.5 in MIB2 unit.
MIB3 is reasonably quick with a logical menu structure, but the screen is small. The SEL R-Line's touch-capacitive climate panel and haptic steering-wheel buttons draw criticism.
Wireless App-Connect (CarPlay/Android Auto) is standard from the SE up, which covers the volume trim. The base S is wired only.
Native Discover Media navigation is fitted only to the SEL R-Line. Voice control is basic command-style, so most owners rely on phone projection.
The base audio is adequate. A Harman Kardon system (480 W, 10 speakers) is available on the top SEL R-Line only.
An 8 in Digital Cockpit is standard on every trim, and the SEL R-Line upgrades to the configurable 10.25 in Digital Cockpit Pro.
MIB3-era Tiguans receive no meaningful whole-vehicle over-the-air updates. Software updates are applied at the dealer.
The myVW/Car-Net app handles remote lock/unlock, vehicle status and parking location, while remote start and Wi-Fi need a paid plan after the trial. There is no digital key.
USB-C ports are fitted front and rear, and wireless charging is standard on SE and up. There is no household AC outlet.
Keyless access with push-button start, remote start and a hands-free liftgate come on the volume SE and above. There is no phone-as-key.
A rearview camera is standard. Park Distance Control sensors, the Area View 360-degree camera and Park Assist are limited to the SEL R-Line.
No head-up display was offered on the US second-generation Tiguan; a HUD arrived only with the third-generation 2025 model.
8Use-Case FitMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.72C-
Large rear door openings, a sliding second row and a big cargo hold make family duty easy. LATCH usability is only Acceptable, and the optional third row fits small kids only.
The IIHS Top Safety Pick+ carries over from 2022, and blind-spot monitoring and AEB are standard. However, NHTSA rates it only 4 stars overall, and IQ.DRIVE is optional on the S.
The ride is comfortable, the cabin quiet and luggage room ample in the two-row layout. Rear amenities are thin below the SEL R-Line, and the ~400-mile range is middling.
Light, quick steering and a smooth ride make it easy in town. The 8-speed's hesitation off the line and occasionally abrupt stop/start detract.
At 25 MPG combined (4Motion) it trails gas rivals such as the CR-V and RAV4, which are near 30 MPG. It does run on regular fuel.
A compact footprint, a 37.7 ft turning circle and an upright greenhouse help in town. Parking sensors and the 360 camera are reserved for the top trim.
A 1,500 lb tow rating and a modest 184-hp engine limit it to light duty. The cargo hold is roomy for a compact.
This is a family crossover with no fleet or hard-use reputation, and VW reliability perception is mid-pack.
It offers roof rails, cargo tie-down hooks and a dealer tow hitch, but no onboard power or work-oriented features.
Quiet, composed highway manners and Travel Assist (standard SE and up) reduce fatigue, but range of roughly 400 miles is unremarkable.
4Motion with Active Control off-road mode and about 7.9 in of clearance handle gravel and snow. The 1,500 lb tow limit restricts hauling toys.
A 73.4 cu ft max hold, a sliding 40/20/40 second row with a pass-through, and standard roof rails make it strong for the class.
9Driving ExperienceOne of the Tiguan's strongest categories.2.22C
Handling is capable and secure with good body control; reviewers put it level with the Mazda CX-5 in corners.
The steering is light, quick and precise, but offers little feedback.
Brakes are easy to modulate with a progressive pedal, and testers rate them highly.
The 184-hp 2.0T is smooth but leisurely, and the 8-speed automatic can hesitate off the line and on tip-in.
The engine is well isolated at cruise, with some audible strain when revved.
The turning circle is mid-pack for a compact SUV.
A commanding, adjustable driving position and good sightlines are offset by touch-capacitive climate and steering-wheel controls on upper trims.
Its composed chassis is undermined by a slow powertrain; it is a sensible, well-rounded crossover rather than an engaging one.
10Value & Market PositionMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.00C
After the MY2022 refresh even the S carries LED headlights, the 8-inch Digital Cockpit, wireless App-Connect, blind-spot and rear-traffic alert plus Front Assist AEB, and FWD models include a third row standard. The SE adds heated seats, keyless access and an 8-inch touchscreen — competitive, though cloth seats and a small screen on the S show where VW saved money.
Prices undercut the class leaders and the cabin/cargo space is among the biggest in the segment, but the 184-hp 2.0T is one of the slowest compacts (0-60 over 10 s), fuel economy trails hybrids, and weak resale erodes the sticker advantage — fair value rather than a bargain.
Four trims with FWD or 4Motion on the lower grades and a two- or three-row choice give more seating flexibility than most compacts, but there is only one engine and no hybrid/PHEV, and the lineup was trimmed from the 2022 range.
VW's best-selling US model, but at ~76,000 units it moved a fraction of the RAV4 or CR-V volume and fell sharply year on year as the generation aged.
Volkswagen carries a 'German engineering' halo and an affordable-premium feel, but middling reliability perception and weak resale keep it neutral rather than aspirational in the mainstream SUV space.
As the second generation aged and inventory recovered in 2023, VW routinely ran cash allowances and subsidised APR on the Tiguan, so buyers could negotiate well below sticker — unlike the RAV4/CR-V that still drew markups.
MY2023 is the sixth US year of the 2018-launch second generation; the MY2022 facelift kept it current, but the all-new third generation was unveiled in 2023 and arrived for 2025, so 2023 buyers bought late in the cycle.
Reviewers praise its roominess, ride and safety credentials, but it ranks mid-to-low in its class and is rarely the pick of a comparison test because of slow acceleration and a dated powertrain.
