The verdict

A struggling compact suv, strong on safety and held back by performance.

The 2021 Tiguan is a roomy, quiet and safe compact SUV. The volume SE 4Motion stickered at $29,890 and comes well equipped, with adaptive cruise and wireless phone projection added for 2021. The trade-off is the 184-hp engine: it is slow (about 9 seconds to 60 mph) and thirsty for the class at 24 MPG combined. A short 4-year/50,000-mile warranty and weak resale also hurt the used-market math. Buy it for comfort, cargo space and an optional kid-size third row, not for performance, fuel economy or long-term cost.

Detailed scoring by subject

1Performance & PowertrainThe Tiguan's lowest-graded category.0.00F
Horsepower
184 hp (2.0L turbo I-4, all trims)
9/100
#8 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

The 2021 Tiguan is the second-generation (2018–2024 US) pre-facelift car, a carry-over year before the 2022 refresh; every trim uses the EA888 2.0T at 184 hp, low for the class.

Torque
221 lb-ft
25/100
#4 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

221 lb-ft arrives low in the rev range, giving adequate around-town pull despite modest peak power.

0–60 mph time

12/100
#10 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Instrumented tests of the identical 184-hp 4Motion powertrain range from about 8.0 to 9.7 s, slower than most turbo compact-SUV rivals.

Powertrain refinement58
#7 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

The 2.0T is quiet and smooth at cruise with usable low-end torque, but reviewers find it breathless at highway speed and labored when passing or loaded.

Transmission behavior62
#9 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

The Aisin 8-speed automatic shifts smoothly but is slow to kick down and can hesitate from a stop, particularly with auto stop/start engaged.

Max towing capacity
1,500 lbs (properly equipped)
7/100
#8 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Rated at just 1,500 lbs, at the bottom of the compact-SUV range.

AWD/4WD availability64
#12 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

4Motion on-demand AWD with Active Control drive modes (On-Road, Snow, Off-Road, Custom) is optional on S/SE/SEL and standard on SE R-Line Black and SEL Premium R-Line; no low range or torque vectoring.

Off-road capability38
#4 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Off-Road mode with hill descent control helps on dirt roads, but roughly 7.9 in of clearance, no skid plates and no off-road trim keep it pavement-oriented.

Powertrain lineup breadth22
#11 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

One engine and one transmission across the range, with no hybrid or plug-in in the US (the European eHybrid was not sold here) while rivals offer hybrids.

2Efficiency & RangeOne of the Tiguan's weakest categories.0.90F
3SafetyThe Tiguan's best-graded category.2.71B-
NHTSA overall rating
5 stars overall (FWD and AWD)
100/100
#1 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

NHTSA rates the 2021 Tiguan five stars overall in both FWD and AWD form. Side is five stars; frontal and rollover are four stars each.

IIHS awards & crashworthiness82
#7 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

The 2021 Tiguan earned an IIHS Top Safety Pick (not TSP+), with Good ratings in every crashworthiness test. The award applies only with the Good-rated headlights; the other headlight variant rates Poor, which is what keeps it from TSP+.

Standard ADAS suite breadth66
#11 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Front Assist AEB with pedestrian monitoring, Blind Spot Monitor and Rear Traffic Alert are standard on every 2021 Tiguan. New for 2021, the volume SE gains standard Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop & Go. The base S still lacks ACC, and Lane Assist remains listed as optional at IIHS.

Automatic emergency braking performance66
#11 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

IIHS rates the vehicle-to-vehicle AEB Superior and daytime pedestrian AEB Advanced. No nighttime pedestrian test applies to 2021; the later night test of this generation (2022-24) rated only Basic.

Blind-spot & cross-traffic coverage72
#3 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Blind Spot Monitor and Rear Traffic Alert are standard on every 2021 trim, and IIHS lists rear automatic braking as standard. Both are alert-focused, with no safe-exit warning and no trailer-aware coverage.

Lane keeping & centering58
#9 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Lane Assist is a lane-keeping nudge on most trims. Travel Assist lane centering arrived only with the 2021.5 mid-year update, and only on the SEL and SEL Premium R-Line, so the volume SE gets keeping, not centering.

Adaptive cruise & highway assist66
#7 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

ACC with Stop & Go is now standard from the volume SE up, a step up from 2020. Travel Assist (hands-on highway assist, 0-95 mph) is available only on 2021.5 SEL/SEL Premium models.

Hands-free driving availability8
#9 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

No hands-free system is offered. Travel Assist on upper 2021.5 trims requires hands on the wheel.

Headlight performance35
#12 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

IIHS rates two headlight variants for 2021: Good and Poor. The halogen reflectors on the lower, volume trims rate Poor; only the LED projectors with curve adaptation and high-beam assist on the top trim rate Good.

Outward visibility75
#3 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

The second-generation Tiguan's upright, boxy glasshouse and large side windows give good sightlines for a compact SUV. The 360-degree Area View camera is limited to the top SEL Premium R-Line.

Child-seat (LATCH) usability64
#11 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

IIHS rates LATCH ease of use Acceptable, with two full LATCH positions. The sliding second row helps rear-facing installs, but three seats across is tight.

4Space & ComfortGrades below the middle of the scale.1.34D
Seating capacity

#1 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

2021 is a carry-over year of the 2018-2024 US long-wheelbase Tiguan. The volume SE 4Motion is a two-row five-seater; the small third row is standard on FWD and optional on most 4Motion trims.

Generous front headroom for a compact SUV thanks to the upright body.

Front legroom

#16 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Front legroom is adequate but at the bottom of the SUV band.

Rear headroom
38.9 in (second row; 39.1 in quoted for some configurations)
72/100
#10 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Second-row headroom is good for adults thanks to the tall roofline; body unchanged from 2020.

Rear legroom
38.7 in (two-row, sliding bench at rearmost); 36.5 in in 3-row models
73/100
#7 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

The sliding second row gives class-competitive rear legroom in two-row models; three-row versions trade about 2 in.

Third-row usability30
#1 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

A third row exists (standard on FWD, optional on 4Motion) but with 27.9 in of legroom it is child-only and eats most cargo space when raised; the scored volume config is two-row.

Cargo/trunk volume
37.6 cu ft behind 2nd row (two-row); 33.0 cu ft in 3-row models
23/100
#2 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Behind-second-row space is near the top of the compact class, though modest on the full-SUV band.

Max cargo volume
73.5 cu ft (two-row, seats folded); 65.3 cu ft in 3-row models
41/100
#3 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Folded-seat capacity is among the largest of 2021 compact SUVs.

Sliding/reclining 40/20/40 second row with pass-through, and wireless charging now standard from SE; bins are practical but conventional.

Seat comfort63
#10 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Front seats are well bolstered and firm-but-supportive on long trips; the sliding/reclining rear bench is comfortable for two adults.

Ride quality70
#4 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Soft, well-controlled ride that absorbs big and small bumps without float; 20-inch wheels on R-Line trims firm it up slightly.

Cabin quietness72
#3 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Among the quietest cabins in the segment; wind and road noise well controlled, some engine noise when revved.

Climate & comfort features59
#8 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

SE brings heated front seats, automatic climate control, keyless access and push-button start; heated wheel and leather on SEL Premium R-Line; no ventilated seats offered.

5Cost of OwnershipOne of the Tiguan's strongest categories.2.60C+
Base MSRP
$26,440 (2021 Tiguan S FWD incl. $1,195 destination)
96/100
#7 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

The 2021 Tiguan S starts at $25,245 plus a $1,195 destination charge, still among the lowest entry prices in the compact-SUV class, though up about $745 from 2020 mostly on a higher destination fee.

Volume-Trim Price
$29,890 (SE 4Motion incl. destination; $26,440–$39,095 across S FWD → SEL Premium R-Line)
93/100
#6 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

The SE is the volume trim and for 2021 gains standard adaptive cruise with stop-and-go and an 8-inch touchscreen; it is typically bought with the $1,300 4Motion option.

5-Year Maintenance & Repair Cost
~$6,200 over 5 years (maintenance + repair)
51/100
#12 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Carefree Coverage pays for the first two scheduled services, but EA888 2.0T out-of-warranty items (water pump/thermostat housing, PCV) and German-brand labour rates keep combined 5-year spend above Toyota/Honda rivals.

5-Year Resale Value Retention
~53% of MSRP retained after 5 years (sources range 52–56%)
43/100
#7 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

The Tiguan depreciates faster than the compact-SUV average (~60% retained); the 2021 model year was partly cushioned by the 2021–2023 used-car price spike.

Basic warranty
4 yr / 50,000 mi bumper-to-bumper
50/100
#4 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

VW's 4-year/50,000-mile New Vehicle Limited Warranty beats the 3/36 mainstream norm but is short of the 5/60 offered by Hyundai and Kia.

Powertrain warranty
4 yr / 50,000 mi (powertrain covered within the New Vehicle Limited Warranty)
0/100
#6 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

VW has no separate, longer powertrain term: engine and transmission share the 4-year/50,000-mile warranty, below the 5/60 mainstream norm and far below Hyundai/Kia's 10/100.

Complimentary maintenance & perks68
#4 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Carefree Coverage includes two years/20,000 miles of scheduled maintenance plus 3-year/36,000-mile roadside assistance and a Car-Net trial — genuinely multi-year, though it covers only the first two services and trails ToyotaCare's breadth.

Effective 5-Year Ownership Cost
$20,248 (≈$14,048 depreciation + $6,200 maintenance)
77/100
#8 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

$29,890 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (53% retained, or about $15,842) leaves about $14,048 in depreciation. Add the projected $6,200 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $20,248 in total.

6Reliability & QualityMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.85C-
Predicted reliability54
#11 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

2021 is the fourth US model year of the second-generation (2018-2024) long-wheelbase Tiguan and the last carry-over year before the 2022 refresh. J.D. Power rates it only 'Average' and Consumer Reports places it below other 2021 vehicles, so it sits at the low end of the mixed-signal band.

Brand reliability track record44
#13 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Around 2021 Volkswagen sat in the lower third of Consumer Reports' brand reliability rankings and below the industry average in J.D. Power's Vehicle Dependability Study, with complaints concentrated in electrical, infotainment and accessory faults rather than catastrophic failures.

Recall & TSB history63
#7 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

MY2021 is covered by five NHTSA campaigns — more than the adjacent 2020 car — including two separate rearview-camera/infotainment failures and a rear suspension knuckle corrosion/cracking recall, alongside a small missing-seat-bolt campaign and the accessory spoiler fix. No powertrain or fire recalls, so activity is typical rather than systemic, but toward the busy end.

The 2021 US Tiguan's only powertrain is the 184-hp EA888 Gen3 2.0T with an Aisin eight-speed automatic, a high-volume pairing with no powertrain recall, but owners of the 2021 report oil consumption and oil leaks (timing cover gasket, PCV) on top of the family's known water-pump/thermostat-housing leaks and hesitation from a stop.

Interior material quality65
#7 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

The pre-refresh cabin is clean and well assembled with soft-touch upper surfaces and conventional physical climate and steering-wheel controls (before the 2022 capacitive switchgear), though reviewers note hard plastics lower down and a plain look on volume S/SE trims.

Fit & finish65
#8 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Built on a mature MQB line at VW's Puebla, Mexico plant, the Tiguan is generally consistent and structurally quiet; owner complaints center on infotainment, rear-camera and electrical glitches rather than rattles or panel gaps, consistent with an 'Average' J.D. Power score.

Dealer & service network62
#11 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Volkswagen's roughly 600-650 US dealers give solid metro coverage but thinner rural reach than Toyota, Honda, Ford or Chevrolet, and VW service satisfaction is mid-pack. MY2021 is the first year after VW cut the Tiguan's 6yr/72k transferable warranty to 4yr/50k, though 2yr/20k Carefree Maintenance is included.

Parts availability & repair cost55
#14 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

A high-volume generation and the ubiquitous EA888 engine mean parts are plentiful and the aftermarket is deep, but German-brand component pricing and labor times keep typical repair costs somewhat above the compact SUV average.

7Technology & InfotainmentOne of the Tiguan's weakest categories.1.27D
Touchscreen size
8.0 in glass-covered MIB3 (SE and up); 6.5 in on base S
12/100
#5 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

For 2021 the volume SE moves to the next-generation MIB3 system with a glass-covered 8-inch display; the S keeps 6.5 in and nothing larger is offered.

Infotainment UX & responsiveness65
#7 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

MIB3 is quicker and cleaner than the outgoing MIB II and keeps physical knobs and climate controls (before the 2022 touch panels), though the 8-inch screen is small versus rivals.

Wireless CarPlay / Android Auto70
#4 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Wireless App-Connect (CarPlay/Android Auto) with multi-phone pairing arrives on SE and above with MIB3; the base S remains wired.

Voice control & native navigation52
#6 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Built-in navigation only on SEL and SEL Premium R-Line; command-based voice control; most owners rely on phone projection, now wireless.

Audio system quality58
#8 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Base audio is adequate; Fender premium audio is confined to the top SEL Premium R-Line.

Digital instrument cluster62
#2 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

The configurable VW Digital Cockpit is standard on SEL and SEL Premium R-Line only; S and SE keep analog gauges.

OTA update capability20
#10 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

No over-the-air vehicle software updates on the 2021 Tiguan; updates are dealer-performed.

Companion app & remote functions56
#10 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Car-Net app offers lock/unlock, honk/flash, vehicle status and remote start (where equipped) with a free Remote Access tier; Wi-Fi hotspot and safety services are paid.

Charging ports & device power58
#3 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

USB-C ports up front and wireless charging standard from SE; no household AC outlet.

Keyless & remote access60
#9 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Keyless access and push-button start from SE; remote start on upper trims; hands-free liftgate on the top trim only; no phone-as-key.

Camera & parking aids55
#7 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Rearview camera standard; Park Distance Control and Area View 360-degree camera limited to upper trims; rear-camera blackout recalls (20V716, 22V514) dent the score.

Head-up display availability10
#8 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

No head-up display offered on the 2021 Tiguan.

Kid & car-seat practicality68
#7 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Big rear doors, a sliding second row and one of the class's largest cargo holds make family logistics easy; LATCH rated only Acceptable and the optional third row is child-only.

Family safety package74
#9 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

IIHS Top Safety Pick (specific headlights) and NHTSA 5 stars; AEB, blind-spot and rear-traffic alert standard, and ACC with Stop and Go now standard from SE; lane keeping still optional and lower-trim halogens rate Poor.

Family road-trip comfort65
#3 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Quiet cabin, roomy reclining rear seat, ample luggage space and wireless phone projection suit long family trips; rear amenities are thin below the top trim.

Daily driving ease64
#13 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Smooth, quiet and easy in traffic with light steering, but the 2.0T/8-speed can hesitate from a stop and stop/start restarts are noticeable.

Commuting cost efficiency42
#16 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

24-25 MPG combined trails most compact SUV rivals, making it costlier per mile.

Parking & maneuverability62
#12 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

A 37.7-ft turning circle and upright visibility make it easy to place, though it is long for the class and Area View is top-trim only.

Work capability34
#3 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Rated to tow 1,500 lb with a large cargo hold; the 184-hp engine strains with loads.

Durability for work duty44
#10 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

A comfort-oriented family crossover with average reliability and no fleet reputation for hard use.

Jobsite & upfit practicality38
#4 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Cargo tie-downs, 12V outlets, roof rails on most trims and an accessory hitch, but no onboard AC power or work-oriented upfit ecosystem.

Long-distance comfort & range66
#6 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Quiet, composed highway manners and a comfortable ride, with ACC Stop and Go now standard from SE; modest fuel economy limits range (~380 mi on 15.9 gal).

Outdoor & adventure capability54
#6 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

4Motion with Active Control drive modes (snow/off-road) and roof rails handle gravel and snowy trailheads; modest clearance and 1,500-lb tow limit keep it pavement-biased.

Gear & luggage flexibility68
#1 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Class-leading cargo space, 40/20/40 sliding split rear seat with pass-through and roof rails make bulky gear easy.

9Driving ExperienceOne of the Tiguan's strongest categories.2.19C
10Value & Market PositionMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.17C
Standard equipment generosity68
#9 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

For 2021 the SE and above gain standard adaptive cruise with stop-and-go and an 8-inch touchscreen with wireless App-Connect, on top of 2020's standard AEB and blind-spot monitoring; FWD models keep a standard third row. The S still has a small screen and cloth seats.

Feature value per dollar61
#13 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Low entry and volume-trim pricing, the improved SE spec and class-leading cargo space plus an optional third row give good content per dollar, but the 184-hp 2.0T is slow, fuel economy trails rivals and weak resale erodes the sticker advantage.

Trim & configuration breadth65
#8 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Five trims from S to SEL Premium R-Line, FWD or 4Motion on most, and a two- or three-row choice give unusual seating flexibility for the class, but there is one engine and no hybrid.

Sales popularity & market acceptance58
#13 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

VW's US best-seller, rebounding 9% to roughly 110,000 units despite the second-half chip shortage, but still a fraction of RAV4/CR-V volume.

Brand desirability & image58
#10 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

The 'German engineering' halo gives the Tiguan a near-premium feel, but middling reliability perception and below-average resale keep VW neutral rather than aspirational among mainstream SUV brands.

Deals & incentive availability62
#3 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Early 2021 still carried VW cash and low-APR offers on the Tiguan, but the semiconductor shortage dried up inventory and incentives from mid-year, with many dealers selling at or above sticker by late 2021.

Model freshness55
#10 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

MY2021 is the fourth US year of the 2018-launch second generation and the last before the MY2022 facelift, so buyers faced an imminent refresh with updated styling and tech.

Critical reception & awards62
#8 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Well reviewed for space, comfort, ride and safety and has won a Cars.com compact-SUV comparison, but it is rarely the pick of the class in mainstream comparisons because of its slow powertrain and mediocre fuel economy.
