The verdict

A struggling compact luxury suv, strong on safety and held back by efficiency.

The 2020 XC60 is one of the safest and best-finished compact luxury SUVs of its year. It has a 5-star NHTSA rating, an IIHS Top Safety Pick, and seats and a cabin that reviewers rank near the top of the class. The trade-offs come at the pump and at resale: the volume T5 AWD gets 23 MPG on premium fuel (about $3,550 a year), holds only around 47% of its value, and its 4-year/50,000-mile powertrain warranty is short. Buy it for comfort, safety and style, ideally a well-optioned car with a clean service history, rather than for low running costs or class-leading reliability.

Detailed scoring by subject

1Performance & PowertrainOne of the XC60's weakest categories.1.24D
Horsepower
250 hp (T5 2.0L turbo); 316 hp T6, 400 hp T8, 415 hp T8 Polestar Engineered
25/100
#5 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The volume 2020 XC60 is the T5, a conventional 2.0L turbo four rated 250 hp. 2020 is a carry-over year inside the second generation (2018–); the US mild-hybrid B5 came later. The 400-hp T8 plug-in tops the regular range, with the 415-hp Polestar Engineered T8 new for 2020.

Torque
258 lb-ft (T5); 295 lb-ft T6, 472 lb-ft T8
35/100
#8 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The T5's 258 lb-ft is typical for a compact luxury turbo four; the T6 offers 295 lb-ft and the T8's rear electric motor lifts combined torque to 472 lb-ft.

0–60 mph time
≈6.3 s (T5, instrumented tests 6.1–6.5 s); T6 ≈5.6 s, T8 ≈4.9 s
53/100
#7 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Instrumented tests of the unchanged second-generation T5 cluster between 6.1 and 6.5 s; 6.3 s is the midpoint. Competitive with turbo-four rivals.

Powertrain refinement65
#9 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The T5 turbo four pulls willingly once boost builds, but there is low-rpm hesitation off the line, an abrupt stop-start system (no 48V ISG in 2020 US models), and a coarse note when worked hard. The T8's engine/motor transitions are well masked.

Transmission behavior66
#7 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Every 2020 XC60 uses the Aisin 8-speed automatic, smooth once underway and rarely hunting on the highway, but with a hesitant step-off and slow kickdowns. Competent rather than crisp.

Max towing capacity
3,500 lbs (all powertrains, properly equipped)
36/100
#4 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Volvo rates the 2020 XC60 at 3,500 lbs across T5, T6 and T8 — below the 4,400 lbs of the Audi Q5 and BMW X3.

AWD/4WD availability72
#6 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

AWD is optional on the T5 (FWD standard) and standard on T6 and T8, so it is widely available; the system is a clutch-based on-demand setup (electric rear axle on the T8) with no low range or torque vectoring.

Off-road capability40
#3 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

About 8.5 in of ground clearance, an Off Road drive mode and hill descent control on AWD models handle gravel, snow and dirt tracks, but there is no low range, locker, skid plating or off-road trim.

Powertrain lineup breadth76
#2 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Three distinct 2020 powertrains — T5 turbo four (FWD or AWD), the supercharged-and-turbocharged T6 AWD, and the T8 plug-in hybrid (plus the 415-hp Polestar Engineered T8). Includes an electrified option but no six-cylinder or full EV.

2Efficiency & RangeThe XC60's lowest-graded category.0.33F
3SafetyThe XC60's best-graded category.2.86B-
NHTSA overall rating
5 stars overall (5 frontal, 5 side, 4 rollover)
100/100
#1 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

NHTSA gave every 2020 XC60 variant it rated (T5 FWD, T5 AWD, T6 AWD) a 5-star overall rating. Each scored 5 stars frontal, 5 side and 5 side pole, plus 4 stars for rollover.

IIHS awards & crashworthiness82
#4 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The 2020 XC60 earned an IIHS Top Safety Pick, not the TSP+ the 2021 later received. The award applies only to cars with the Acceptable-rated headlights. Crash results are Good across small overlap (driver and passenger), moderate overlap, original side, roof strength and head restraints. The later updated side test is Acceptable.

Standard ADAS suite breadth60
#4 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

City Safety AEB, Lane Keeping Aid, Run-off Road Mitigation and Oncoming Lane Mitigation are standard on every 2020 XC60. On the volume T5 Momentum, though, blind-spot monitoring requires the Premium package, and adaptive cruise with Pilot Assist requires the Advanced Package. Both blind-spot monitoring and cross-traffic alert are standard only on Inscription and R-Design.

Automatic emergency braking performance86
#1 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

IIHS rates the standard City Safety system Superior for vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention and Advanced for daytime pedestrians. Nighttime pedestrian detection was not tested in that era.

Blind-spot & cross-traffic coverage62
#3 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

BLIS with Steer Assist and Cross Traffic Alert intervene well when fitted, but the volume Momentum trim gets them only through an option package. There is no safe-exit alert.

Lane keeping & centering68
#3 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Lane Keeping Aid, Run-off Road Mitigation and Oncoming Lane Mitigation are standard. True lane centering comes only with Pilot Assist in the optional Advanced Package. Where fitted, reviewers find it competent but prone to wander on faded markings.

Adaptive cruise & highway assist70
#5 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Pilot Assist pairs full-speed stop-and-go adaptive cruise with steering support and is well integrated. On the 2020 volume Momentum, however, adaptive cruise is not standard and requires the Advanced Package.

Hands-free driving availability10
#2 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

No 2020 XC60 offers hands-free highway driving. Pilot Assist is a hands-on Level 2 system that requires steering input.

Headlight performance42
#7 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

IIHS rates the base LED reflector headlights, which lack curve adaptation, Marginal. Only the curve-adaptive LEDs bundled with the Advanced package (and on the Polestar Engineered) earn Acceptable, which is why the 2020 award is limited to those builds. No configuration is rated Good.

Outward visibility72
#4 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The second-generation XC60 has an upright greenhouse and decent forward sightlines, but thick rear pillars limit over-the-shoulder views. A rearview camera is standard, while the 360-degree camera requires the optional Advanced Package on the Momentum.

Child-seat (LATCH) usability70
#4 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

IIHS rates LATCH ease of use Acceptable. The two outboard rear seats have full LATCH hardware and the center seat has a tether anchor only. Rear door openings and legroom are reasonable for the class.

4Space & ComfortOne of the XC60's weakest categories.1.11D
Seating capacity
5 seats (two rows; no third row offered)
25/100
#1 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Two-row, five-passenger compact luxury SUV on every 2020 trim.

Front headroom
38.0 in (panoramic moonroof standard)
20/100
#10 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Middling front headroom, trimmed by the panoramic moonroof that is standard on every 2020 XC60.

Front legroom
41.5 in
33/100
#4 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Adequate front legroom, in the lower-middle of the SUV band.

Rear headroom
38.0 in
50/100
#9 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Good rear headroom for a compact SUV despite the standard glass roof.

Rear legroom
38.0 in
67/100
#3 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Generous rear legroom for the compact luxury class.

Third-row usability10
#6 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The XC60 is a two-row SUV with no third row on any 2020 configuration; seven-seat buyers must step up to the XC90.

Cargo/trunk volume
29.7 cu ft behind 2nd row
9/100
#2 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Competitive cargo hold for a compact luxury SUV, though well short of mid-size SUVs on the segment-wide band.

Max cargo volume
63.3 cu ft (rear seats folded)
18/100
#2 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Maximum cargo volume is typical of the compact luxury class.

In-cabin storage & clever solutions60
#2 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Sensible door pockets, a center-console bin, an underfloor cargo tray and a 60/40 split rear seat with a pass-through; competent but nothing standout.

Seat comfort84
#1 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Volvo's front seats are repeatedly cited as among the most comfortable in the class over long drives, with good rear support; massaging and ventilated fronts are optional on Inscription.

Ride quality68
#7 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The steel-sprung Momentum on 18-inch wheels rides comfortably, but larger wheels and the R-Design tune turn busy over broken pavement; the optional air suspension is smoother.

Cabin quietness72
#6 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Wind and road noise are well suppressed at highway speed, but the four-cylinder grows vocal and strained under hard acceleration.

Climate & comfort features70
#3 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Dual-zone auto climate is standard; heated front seats and heated wheel come in the optional Climate package on Momentum, with four-zone climate and ventilated seats on Inscription; remote pre-conditioning via Volvo On Call.

5Cost of OwnershipGrades below the middle of the scale.1.50D
Base MSRP
$41,145 (T5 Momentum FWD, incl. $995 destination)
60/100
#4 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

MY2020 is a carry-over year of the second generation (2018–) before the 2022 facelift; the lineup used Momentum/R-Design/Inscription naming with the conventional 250-hp T5 turbo as the entry engine, opening at $40,150 before destination.

Volume-Trim Price
~$46,000 (T5 Momentum AWD + Premium Package, incl. destination); range $41,145–~$71,500 from T5 Momentum FWD to T8 Polestar Engineered
54/100
#3 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The T5 Momentum AWD was the core of US XC60 volume, and most dealer stock carried the Premium Package (~$2,500), putting a typical sticker around $46,000; CarEdge's $49,645 average new price reflects a richer mix including R-Design/Inscription and T6.

5-Year Maintenance & Repair Cost
~$5,500 over 5 years (source estimates ~$4,100–$7,000)
62/100
#4 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

CarEdge projects XC60 maintenance and repairs below the luxury-SUV average while Edmunds' cost-to-own figures for this generation run higher; a blended mid-pack figure, with the first three scheduled services covered by Volvo's complimentary maintenance program.

5-Year Resale Value Retention
~47% of MSRP retained at ~6 years (source range ~45–49%)
23/100
#5 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

With the 2020 now about six years old, real market data exists: it holds roughly half its original price, slightly below luxury compact SUV peers; 47% blends CarEdge's 49% with KBB's lower base-trim figure, adjusted toward the 5-year mark.

Basic warranty
4 years / 50,000 miles
50/100
#3 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Volvo's New Vehicle Limited Warranty runs 4 years or 50,000 miles — a year longer than the mainstream norm and matched to the German luxury standard.

Powertrain warranty
4 years / 50,000 miles (concurrent with basic); 8 yr / 100,000 mi T8 hybrid battery
0/100
#6 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Volvo offers no separate, longer powertrain warranty in the US — engine and drivetrain are covered only for the concurrent 4 yr/50,000 mi term, the weakest structure in a segment where Genesis, Lexus and Acura go longer.

Complimentary maintenance & perks80
#3 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

MY2020 XC60s are covered by Volvo's Complimentary Factory Scheduled Maintenance (3 yr / 36,000 mi), on par with BMW's and Audi's programs, plus 4 years of unlimited-mileage roadside assistance and a Volvo On Call connected-services subscription.

Effective 5-Year Ownership Cost
$29,880 (≈$24,380 depreciation + $5,500 maintenance)
52/100
#2 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

$46,000 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (47% retained, or about $21,620) leaves about $24,380 in depreciation. Add the projected $5,500 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $29,880 in total.

6Reliability & QualityMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.75C-
Predicted reliability55
#6 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Consumer Reports rates the 2020 XC60 about average for its model year, but its owner-reported trouble spots include major engine, minor transmission and climate-system faults (AC compressor failures). That puts it mid-pack and below the Lexus/Acura tier of the class.

Brand reliability track record42
#8 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

In the dependability and initial-quality studies covering 2020 models, Volvo sat below the industry average. In Consumer Reports' brand rankings it was mid-to-lower pack, a lower-third standing that later fell to near-last.

Recall & TSB history52
#6 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Five NHTSA campaigns apply to the gas 2020 XC60, and three are large fleet-wide ones: AEB software that may miss obstacles, a low-pressure fuel pump fuse that can stall the engine, and loose front-wiper nuts. That is heavier recall activity than the 2021 model year, but nothing points to a systemic powertrain defect.

Powertrain durability reputation56
#7 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The volume T5 uses Volvo's widely deployed 2.0L Drive-E turbo four with the Aisin eight-speed automatic, which shows no single systemic failure pattern. However, CR owners flag major engine repairs (head gasket, turbo, timing chain) and minor transmission faults for 2020, and the turbo-plus-supercharged T6 adds complexity.

Interior material quality84
#1 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Reviewers consistently rank the second-generation XC60's Scandinavian cabin among the best in the compact luxury class against the GLC, X3 and Q5. It has wood inlays, quality leather and knurled controls, with only a few hard plastics in low-touch zones.

Fit & finish62
#7 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Physical assembly is generally tight and reviewers report few squeaks or rattles. However, the brand's initial-quality results in this period were below average, driven mostly by electronics (Sensus infotainment) rather than panel or trim defects.

Dealer & service network58
#8 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Volvo's US retailer network is adequate in metro areas but thin nationally compared with the German luxury brands. The 2020 ownership package was comparatively generous, with three years of complimentary scheduled maintenance.

Parts availability & repair cost56
#5 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Repair frequency and annual spend are about average to slightly better than the luxury compact class. However, parts come mostly through dealers and from Europe, and the independent aftermarket is thinner than for Japanese or domestic rivals; CR owners cite costly AC compressor repairs.

7Technology & InfotainmentMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.83C-
Touchscreen size
9.0 in portrait Sensus (standard on all trims)
24/100
#5 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Large-for-2020 portrait touchscreen, standard across the lineup.

Infotainment UX & responsiveness55
#7 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Sensus looks premium with a tablet-like layout, but it is slow to respond and buries climate and many vehicle functions in swipe-heavy touch menus.

Wireless CarPlay / Android Auto55
#7 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard on every trim but wired-only in 2020; wireless projection came in later model years.

Voice control & native navigation58
#5 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Native Sensus navigation with voice commands is standard and functional, but the voice system is command-based and most owners default to phone projection.

Audio system quality84
#1 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

A solid 10-speaker base system, a Harman Kardon upgrade, and the optional 15-speaker Bowers & Wilkins system that reviewers rank among the segment's best.

Digital instrument cluster80
#2 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The 12.3-inch digital driver display became standard on every 2020 trim; crisp with map display, though less configurable than Audi's Virtual Cockpit.

OTA update capability38
#9 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

2020 Sensus cars receive map updates and app downloads over the air, but no whole-vehicle software updates; those arrived with the 2022+ Google-based system.

Companion app & remote functions66
#4 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Volvo On Call provides remote start and pre-conditioning, lock/unlock, locate and trip data, complimentary for an initial period; no phone-as-key in 2020.

Charging ports & device power50
#7 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

USB-A ports front and rear plus 12V sockets; wireless phone charging only in an option package, and no USB-C — a dated port mix.

Keyless & remote access66
#5 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Push-button start and a power liftgate are standard; full keyless entry and hands-free liftgate are optional or upper-trim; remote start via app; no phone-as-key.

Camera & parking aids66
#4 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Rear camera and parking sensors are standard; the 360-degree Surround View camera comes in the Advanced package, available on any trim.

Head-up display availability64
#2 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

A graphical HUD is available on every trim including the volume Momentum, but only via the optional Advanced package.

8Use-Case FitMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.12C
Kid & car-seat practicality72
#2 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Wide rear doors, generous rear legroom and accessible LATCH make car seats easy, and the 29.7 cu ft hold fits a stroller; no third row.

Family safety package82
#2 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

IIHS 2020 Top Safety Pick and NHTSA five stars, with City Safety AEB and lane keeping standard; blind-spot monitoring needs a package on the Momentum.

Family road-trip comfort72
#2 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Excellent seats and a quiet cabin, but rear amenities (four-zone climate, heated rear seats) are upper-trim only and compact cargo limits luggage on long family trips.

Daily driving ease70
#7 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Light controls and good visibility make it easy around town, though abrupt stop-start and a laggy touchscreen add minor daily friction.

Commuting cost efficiency48
#7 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

23 MPG combined on premium fuel is below average for the class, making the XC60 relatively costly to commute in.

Parking & maneuverability72
#3 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

A compact footprint and 37.4 ft turning circle make city parking manageable; the 360-degree camera is optional.

Work capability42
#5 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

3,500-lb towing and modest cargo suit light trailers only; a luxury crossover rather than a work vehicle.

Durability for work duty40
#2 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

A luxury-trimmed cabin and a turbocharged four are not built for hard work use, and there is no fleet track record.

Jobsite & upfit practicality30
#4 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Cargo tie-downs, roof rails and an optional hitch only; no onboard AC power or work upfit ecosystem.

Long-distance comfort & range76
#2 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Superb seats, a quiet cabin and ~430-mile range make it a strong tourer; Pilot Assist semi-automated driving is optional via the Advanced package.

Outdoor & adventure capability58
#6 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

AWD with an Off Road mode and hill descent control plus ~8.5 in ground clearance handles gravel and snow roads; roof rails and 3,500-lb towing carry bikes and small toys.

Gear & luggage flexibility62
#4 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

60/40 split-folding rear seats, roof rails and an available hitch handle normal luggage; bulky gear is limited by compact cargo dimensions.

10Value & Market PositionOne of the XC60's strongest categories.2.67C+
Standard equipment generosity64
#5 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The 2020 T5 Momentum brings the 250-hp turbo four, Sensus 9-inch portrait touchscreen with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, a digital cluster, power liftgate and City Safety automatic emergency braking standard — competitive for a luxury compact. But Pilot Assist adaptive cruise, blind-spot monitoring, a panoramic roof and heated seats sat in the Premium/Advanced packages, and AWD was a $2,300 option on the T5.

Feature value per dollar64
#7 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

At ~$41,000–$47,000 the T5 undercuts a comparably equipped BMW X3 or Audi Q5 slightly and brings a premium cabin and strong safety tech, but its 250 hp is merely class-par, rivals like the Acura RDX offer more for less, and the T6/T8 versions carry big price steps. Fair value rather than a bargain.

Three grades (Momentum/R-Design/Inscription) across three powertrains — T5 turbo in FWD or AWD, the 316-hp supercharged/turbo T6 AWD, and the T8 plug-in hybrid — topped by the new-for-2020 T8 Polestar Engineered, spanning roughly $41,000 to $71,500. Unusually broad for the segment, including a FWD entry point and a performance PHEV halo.

Volvo's best seller and a steady performer through the pandemic year at about 32,000 US units, holding roughly flat while the brand edged up 1.8%; solid but well behind class volume leaders like the Lexus RX/NX, BMW X3 and Audi Q5.

Volvo carries a real safety halo and well-regarded Scandinavian design and interiors, but sits a rung below the German brands in aspirational image, and mixed reliability perceptions temper the badge.

MY2020 sold mostly before the 2021–2022 inventory shortage, in a period when Volvo routinely supported the XC60 with subsidized leases, loyalty/conquest cash and, during the spring-2020 pandemic slump, promotional low-APR financing; discounts off MSRP were readily negotiable.

The second generation launched for MY2018 on the SPA platform, so 2020 was a third-year carry-over still current in design and safety tech, with the T8 Polestar Engineered added; the 2022 facelift (Google infotainment) and 2023 mild-hybrid switch were still ahead, making the Sensus system the first thing to date.

Well reviewed for comfort, design and safety and an IIHS Top Safety Pick for 2020, with the generation's 2018 World Car of the Year still fresh; but it ranked mid-pack in class lists and was rarely the comparison-test winner against the BMW X3, Acura RDX or Porsche Macan.
