The verdict

A mixed-report compact luxury suv, strong on safety and held back by efficiency.

The 2023 XC60 is a calm, safe and handsomely finished compact luxury SUV. It has some of the best seats in the class, a 5-star NHTSA rating and an IIHS Top Safety Pick, and Google Maps and Assistant are built in. You pay for that comfort in practicality and running costs: 22.4 cu ft of cargo space behind the rear seat is small for the class, the volume B5 AWD needs premium fuel at about $3,300 a year, and resale and powertrain warranty coverage trail rivals. As a used buy it makes the most sense for safety-minded families and highway commuters who care more about comfort than speed or space.

Detailed scoring by subject

1Performance & PowertrainOne of the XC60's weakest categories.1.23D
Horsepower
247 hp (B5 mild hybrid); 295 hp B6, 455 hp T8 Recharge plug-in hybrid
24/100
#9 of 13 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The volume 2023 XC60 is the B5 — a 2.0L turbo four with 48V integrated starter-generator rated 247 hp. 2023 is the first US year with mild hybrids as the base engine (Wikipedia), and the range runs up through the 295-hp B6 and the 455-hp T8 Recharge.

Torque
258 lb-ft (B5); 310 lb-ft B6, 523 lb-ft T8 Recharge
35/100
#10 of 13 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The 2023 B5 makes 258 lb-ft, slightly below the 266 lb-ft quoted for the post-facelift B5; the supercharged-and-turbocharged B6 adds 310 lb-ft and the T8 523 lb-ft combined.

0–60 mph time
6.6 s (B5 AWD); T8 Recharge ≈4.5 s
48/100
#9 of 13 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Published figures for the 2023 B5 AWD cluster at 6.3–6.6 s; the more conservative 6.6 s is used. The T8 Recharge drops that to about 4.5 s.

Powertrain refinement70
#9 of 13 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The 48V ISG smooths stop-start and fills in low-rpm response, so the B5 pulls cleanly around town, but the 2.0L four turns buzzy and strained when worked hard — rivals offer smoother sixes. The T8's engine-on transitions are generally well masked.

Transmission behavior68
#9 of 13 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Every 2023 XC60 uses an 8-speed automatic that shifts smoothly once rolling and rarely hunts, but reviewers note a hesitant step-off from a stop and lazy kickdowns. Competent and calm, not crisp.

Max towing capacity
3,500 lbs (all powertrains, properly equipped)
36/100
#5 of 13 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Volvo rates the 2023 XC60 at 3,500 lbs across B5, B6 and T8 — below the 4,400 lbs of the Audi Q5 and BMW X3.

AWD/4WD availability74
#8 of 13 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

AWD is optional on the B5 (FWD is standard on B5 Core/Plus) and standard on B6 and T8, so it is widely available but not universal as it became later. The system is a clutch-based on-demand setup (electric rear axle on the T8) with no low range or torque vectoring.

Off-road capability40
#5 of 13 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Around 8.5 in of ground clearance, an Off Road drive mode and hill descent control (AWD) cover gravel, snow and dirt roads, but there is no low range, locker, skid plating or off-road trim — light-duty only.

Powertrain lineup breadth76
#3 of 13 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Three distinct 2023 powertrains — B5 mild hybrid (FWD or AWD), the supercharged/turbocharged B6 mild hybrid, and the T8 Recharge plug-in hybrid with an upgraded 18.8 kWh pack (~35 mi EV range) and a Polestar Engineered tune. All electrified, broader than the later two-powertrain lineup, though no six-cylinder or full EV.

2Efficiency & RangeThe XC60's lowest-graded category.1.10D
3SafetyThe XC60's best-graded category.3.27B+
NHTSA overall rating
5 stars overall (5 frontal, 5 side, 4 rollover)
100/100
#1 of 13 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

NHTSA tested the 2023 XC60 B5 and B6 and awarded the full 5-star overall rating on every variant, with 5 stars frontal and side and 4 stars rollover (no tip in the dynamic test).

IIHS awards & crashworthiness80
#6 of 13 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The 2023 XC60 earned an IIHS Top Safety Pick (not TSP+), with Good ratings in every small and moderate overlap frontal test, Good roof strength and head restraints. The only blemish is an Acceptable updated side test, with Marginal pelvis protection, which is what held it back from the '+' award.

Standard ADAS suite breadth74
#8 of 13 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

City Safety AEB, lane keeping aid, BLIS blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert and driver alert control are standard on the Core trim, but for 2023 adaptive cruise with Pilot Assist was optional on Core and standard only from Plus up, as was the 360-degree camera. Core features are standard, yet ACC is trim-gated, which keeps it in the middle band.

Automatic emergency braking performance90
#1 of 13 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The standard City Safety system earned top marks in the IIHS front crash prevention tests used for 2023: Superior vehicle-to-vehicle (avoided collisions at 12 and 25 mph), Superior daytime pedestrian and Advanced nighttime pedestrian. That includes nighttime pedestrian detection, the top band's criterion.

Blind-spot & cross-traffic coverage82
#3 of 13 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

BLIS with Steer Assist and Cross Traffic Alert with autobrake are standard from the Core trim, so the system steers you back from lane changes instead of only alerting. It loses points because Volvo offers no safe-exit warning for rear occupants.

Lane keeping & centering74
#4 of 13 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Lane Keeping Aid and Oncoming Lane Mitigation are standard, but proper lane centering comes only with Pilot Assist, which was optional on the 2023 Core trim and standard from Plus. Reviewers find Pilot Assist's centering competent but not the smoothest in the segment.

Adaptive cruise & highway assist78
#5 of 13 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Pilot Assist combines full-speed stop-and-go adaptive cruise with steering support and is well integrated where fitted. For 2023 it was optional on Core, standard on Plus and Ultimate, so the volume buyer usually has it but the base car doesn't come with it.

Hands-free driving availability10
#7 of 13 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

No hands-free highway driving is offered on any 2023 XC60. Pilot Assist is a hands-on system that requires steering input.

Headlight performance65
#5 of 13 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

IIHS rates the standard curve-adaptive LED headlights Acceptable overall. High-beam assist is standard, but no configuration earns Good.

Outward visibility76
#4 of 13 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The second-generation XC60 has a fairly upright greenhouse and a reasonably low beltline for its class. Thick rear pillars limit over-the-shoulder views. A rear camera and parking sensors are standard, but the 360-degree camera comes only from the Plus trim.

Child-seat (LATCH) usability70
#8 of 13 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

IIHS rates LATCH ease of use Acceptable: two rear positions have complete LATCH hardware, and the center seat has only a tether anchor. Rear-door openings and rear-seat room are decent for the segment.

4Space & ComfortGrades below the middle of the scale.1.29D
Seating capacity
5 seats (2+3, every trim and powertrain)
25/100
#2 of 13 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The 2023 XC60 is a strictly two-row, five-seat compact luxury SUV in Core, Plus and Ultimate trim with B5, B6 or T8 power; no third row has ever been offered.

Front headroom
39.7 in without moonroof (38.0 in with the panoramic moonroof fitted to most cars)
54/100
#7 of 13 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The second-generation body is unchanged for 2023, so Volvo's published 39.7 in no-roof figure applies; most retail cars carry the panoramic moonroof, which trims it to 38.0 in.

Front legroom
41.5 in
33/100
#4 of 13 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Adequate rather than generous front legroom, unchanged across the second generation.

Rear headroom
38.0 in
50/100
#10 of 13 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Mid-pack second-row headroom for the compact luxury class — slightly under the X3 and GLC, ahead of the Q5.

Rear legroom
38.0 in
67/100
#4 of 13 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

A real strength: 38.0 in of second-row legroom is near the top of the compact luxury class, well clear of the X3 and GLC (~36.4 in).

Third-row usability12
#7 of 13 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

There is no third row on any 2023 XC60; seven-seat buyers are steered to the XC90. Scored in the low band, as the item requires for two-row SUVs.

Cargo/trunk volume
22.4 cu ft behind the second row (T8 Recharge slightly less)
0/100
#9 of 13 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Small even by compact-luxury standards and at the floor of the SUV normalization band; the X3 offers roughly 28.7 cu ft behind its rear seat.

Max cargo volume
63.3 cu ft with the rear seat folded
18/100
#3 of 13 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Seats-folded volume is competitive with the class and ahead of the GLC and GV70, helped by a flat floor with little wheel-arch intrusion.

In-cabin storage & clever solutions66
#2 of 13 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Competitive everyday storage — door pockets, a covered center console, a wireless charging tray and a cargo floor with grocery-bag holder and underfloor space — but no standout solutions; the console redesign that added storage did not arrive until the 2026 refresh, and the small behind-seat hold limits the bay.

Seat comfort87
#1 of 13 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Volvo's front seats are a long-standing benchmark for long-haul support, and the rear bench is roomier than most rivals. Ventilated seats, four-way power lumbar and a cushion extension come on Ultimate.

Ride quality70
#9 of 13 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Composed most of the time but firmer than the luxury class norm; testers single out sharp impacts over ruts and potholes on the steel-spring suspension, especially on the larger wheels, and the air suspension that softens it is an Ultimate option.

Cabin quietness75
#8 of 13 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Mostly quiet at a cruise, but the four-cylinder sounds unpolished when revved and tire noise is more audible than in the quietest rivals; the 2026 refresh's added insulation is not on this car.

Climate & comfort features80
#3 of 13 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Heated front seats and dual-zone climate are standard, remote preconditioning works through the Volvo Cars app, and the Climate package (heated wheel and heated rear seats) is available across trims — but ventilated seats and four-zone climate are confined to the Ultimate, so the volume Plus buyer goes without.

5Cost of OwnershipOne of the XC60's weakest categories.1.13D
Base MSRP
$44,545 (B5 Core FWD, incl. $1,095 destination)
51/100
#4 of 13 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

MY2023 is the first year of Volvo's Core/Plus/Ultimate naming and of a mild-hybrid-only gas lineup; the entry B5 Core front-drive opens at $43,450 before destination, with AWD a $2,300 option.

Volume-Trim Price
~$51,095 (B5 Plus AWD, incl. destination); range $44,545–~$73,000 from B5 Core FWD to T8 Polestar Engineered
41/100
#4 of 13 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The mid-grade B5 Plus with AWD is the typical US XC60 configuration — Core is a sparse entry point and most buyers in snow states take AWD — putting the volume transaction around $51,100 before options.

5-Year Maintenance & Repair Cost
~$5,500 over 5 years (source estimates ~$4,100–$7,000)
62/100
#4 of 13 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

CarEdge projects XC60 maintenance and repairs below the luxury-SUV average while Edmunds' True Cost to Own runs higher for this generation, so a blended figure lands mid-pack; the 2023's 3-year/36k complimentary maintenance offsets the first three scheduled services.

5-Year Resale Value Retention
~46% of MSRP retained at 5 years (source range ~44–50%)
20/100
#6 of 13 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The XC60 depreciates roughly in line with, or slightly worse than, its luxury compact SUV peers; the 2023 model has already lost about 44% in three years per KBB, implying a five-year retention in the mid-40s.

Basic warranty
4 years / 50,000 miles
50/100
#3 of 13 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Volvo's New Vehicle Limited Warranty runs 4 years or 50,000 miles — a year longer than the mainstream norm and matched to the German luxury standard.

Powertrain warranty
4 years / 50,000 miles (concurrent with basic); 8 yr / 100,000 mi hybrid & PHEV battery components
0/100
#8 of 13 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Volvo offers no separate, longer powertrain warranty in the US — engine and drivetrain are covered only for the concurrent 4 yr/50,000 mi term, the weakest structure in a segment where Genesis, Lexus and Acura go longer.

Complimentary maintenance & perks82
#3 of 13 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

MY2023 XC60s fall under Volvo's Complimentary Factory Scheduled Maintenance program of 3 years / 36,000 miles (three services), on par with Audi's and BMW's 3-year programs, plus 4 years of unlimited-mileage roadside assistance and a Google built-in services/data trial.

Effective 5-Year Ownership Cost
$33,091 (≈$27,591 depreciation + $5,500 maintenance)
44/100
#4 of 13 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

$51,095 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (46% retained, or about $23,504) leaves about $27,591 in depreciation. Add the projected $5,500 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $33,091 in total.

6Reliability & QualityMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.07C
Predicted reliability66
#7 of 13 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Consumer Reports rates the 2023 XC60 in its volume mild-hybrid gas form as more reliable than the average 2023 car, which is a better showing than most of the brand's lineup; the T8 plug-in variant is rated below average, and owner-reported trouble spots (infotainment screen freezes, occasional eight-speed transmission complaints) keep it out of the top tier.

Brand reliability track record42
#12 of 13 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

In the 2023 time frame Volvo was improving in J.D. Power's dependability study but still sat below the industry average, and it ranked near the bottom of the 2023 Initial Quality Study as its Google-based infotainment drew complaints; Consumer Reports had the brand mid-pack. Net: lower-third brand standing, not yet the near-last VDS finish of later years.

Recall & TSB history58
#4 of 13 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The 2023 gas XC60 carries a typical recall load for the segment, and every campaign applying to it is a software fix (most delivered over the air) rather than a mechanical or fire defect; the two most consequential are the BCM2 brake-module error and the large rearview-camera software recall that needed a second remedy.

Powertrain durability reputation63
#6 of 13 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The volume B5 combination — Volvo's long-running 2.0L VEA turbo four with a 48V integrated starter-generator and the Aisin eight-speed automatic — is a mature, widely deployed family without a systemic high-mileage failure pattern, though CR owners flag occasional transmission complaints and the 48V mild-hybrid layer was relatively new in the US for 2023.

Interior material quality84
#3 of 13 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The XC60's Scandinavian cabin — wood inlays, quality leather and knurled switchgear — remains one of the most praised in the compact luxury class against the GLC, X3 and Q5, with only a few hard-plastic panels in low-touch zones drawing criticism.

Fit & finish62
#11 of 13 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Physical assembly reads as tight and rattle-free in reviews and owner feedback, but objective initial-quality evidence for the brand in this period is poor, driven largely by electronics glitches rather than panel or trim defects.

Dealer & service network58
#10 of 13 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Volvo's US retailer footprint is adequate in metro areas but thin nationally relative to the German luxury brands, leaving rural owners with long drives; the 2023 ownership package was comparatively generous with three years of complimentary maintenance.

Parts availability & repair cost56
#6 of 13 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Repair frequency and spend are about average to slightly better for the luxury compact class, but parts are largely dealer-channel and European-sourced with a thinner independent aftermarket than Japanese or domestic rivals.

7Technology & InfotainmentOne of the XC60's strongest categories.2.85B-
Touchscreen size
9.0 in portrait (standard on all trims; no larger option)
24/100
#11 of 13 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Every 2023 XC60 uses the same 9-inch portrait center display — small for the compact luxury class, and the 11.2-in screen did not arrive until the 2026 refresh.

Infotainment UX & responsiveness70
#10 of 13 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The Android Automotive (Google built-in) software is logical and its Google apps are excellent, but on 2023 hardware the small portrait screen buries climate and most vehicle functions in touch menus and responsiveness is only fair; Volvo's own claim that the 2026 processor is roughly twice as fast underlines the gap. Usable, not class-leading.

Wireless CarPlay / Android Auto56
#12 of 13 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Apple CarPlay is standard but wired only (USB-C in the console), and Android Auto was not offered at all when the 2023 car was sold — Google built-in stands in for it, and wired Android Auto only arrived by software update in December 2024. Wired-standard band, held low by the missing Android Auto at launch.

Voice control & native navigation90
#1 of 13 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Google built-in delivers native Google Maps with live traffic and a natural-language Google Assistant for navigation, climate and media, plus Google Play apps — the reference in-car voice and maps setup, and one owners rarely bypass.

Audio system quality90
#1 of 13 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The optional Bowers & Wilkins system (Ultimate) is among the best factory audio setups sold, Harman Kardon is available on the volume Plus, and the base high-performance system is respectable — strong at every rung.

Digital instrument cluster80
#8 of 13 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

A 12.3-inch fully digital driver display is standard on every trim and shows Google Maps directly, but it offers only a few fixed layouts, far less configurable than Audi's Virtual Cockpit.

OTA update capability88
#1 of 13 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Volvo pushes genuine whole-vehicle OTA updates to Google-built-in cars, and the 2023 XC60 has since received features over the air — wired Android Auto in late 2024 and the new infotainment UI in 2025 — which is about as strong a track record as the luxury class offers.

Companion app & remote functions72
#5 of 13 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The Volvo Cars app covers remote start and preconditioning, lock/unlock, locate, status and send-to-car, included with the Digital Services package; no phone-as-key on this platform, and owners report slow wake-ups and connection drops.

Charging ports & device power72
#3 of 13 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Wireless phone charging is standard with Google built-in and USB-C ports serve both rows, but there is no household AC outlet or cargo-area power beyond 12V.

Keyless & remote access74
#9 of 13 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Push-button start and app-based remote start are standard, with proximity entry and a hands-free power tailgate on the volume Plus; there is no phone-as-key, so it stops short of the top band.

Camera & parking aids82
#1 of 13 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Front and rear parking sensors and a rear camera are standard, and the 360-degree surround-view camera is standard from the volume Plus trim up, with Park Assist Pilot available; image quality is good rather than class-leading.

Head-up display availability60
#9 of 13 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

A conventional windshield HUD is offered only on the top Ultimate trim; the volume Plus buyer cannot get one.

8Use-Case FitOne of the XC60's strongest categories.2.74B-
Kid & car-seat practicality82
#1 of 13 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

A strong family box: 38 in of rear legroom, wide rear doors, a 40/20/40 seat that folds flat, and Volvo's optional integrated booster cushions. Held back by an Acceptable LATCH rating with complete hardware in only two positions and a small 22.4 cu ft behind-seat hold for strollers.

Family safety package86
#3 of 13 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

NHTSA five stars overall and a 2023 IIHS Top Safety Pick, with City Safety autobrake, BLIS and cross-traffic alert standard; Pilot Assist and adaptive cruise come on the volume Plus but are optional on Core. Held back by an Acceptable updated-side-test result and Acceptable headlights.

Family road-trip comfort77
#1 of 13 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Excellent seats front and rear and around 470 miles of range make it a fine four-person tourer, but the firm ride, small behind-seat cargo hold, dual-zone climate on the volume trim (four-zone only on Ultimate) and no rear entertainment hold it back.

Daily driving ease76
#7 of 13 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Light steering, good sightlines and great seats make it easy to live with, and the volume Plus has stop-and-go adaptive cruise; marked down for a stiff ride over potholes, a hesitant step-off from rest, and climate controls buried in a small, sometimes laggy 9-in touchscreen.

Commuting cost efficiency55

The volume B5 AWD returns 25 MPG combined on required premium fuel — an EPA-estimated $3,300 a year — and luxury-brand tires, insurance and service add to it; the 48V mild hybrid does little in stop-and-go traffic. The T8 Recharge's ~36 electric miles would cover most commutes, but it is the costly optional powertrain.

Parking & maneuverability80
#1 of 13 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

A 37.4 ft turning diameter, a compact footprint and upright glass make it easy to place; front and rear parking sensors are standard and the volume Plus adds a 360-degree camera.

Work capability52
#2 of 13 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Light-duty only: 3,500 lbs of towing across all powertrains handles a small trailer or jet skis but trails the 4,400–5,000 lbs of the Q5 and X3, and there is no bed and only modest payload.

Durability for work duty56

The SPA platform and 2.0L four are well proven and RepairPal rates repair odds below the class average, but this is a luxury cabin on low-profile tires with no fleet variant and dealer-priced parts; CR flags electronics and the 8-speed as trouble spots for 2023.

Jobsite & upfit practicality42
#2 of 13 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The basics only: 12V sockets in the console and cargo area, roof rails, a power tailgate (hands-free on Plus) and an accessory tow bar. No bed, no AC inverter, no commercial upfit support.

Long-distance comfort & range81
#1 of 13 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Class-best seats, a mostly quiet cabin, about 470 miles between fill-ups and Pilot Assist with stop-and-go adaptive cruise on the volume Plus make it a strong highway car; the firm ride on broken pavement and audible engine under load keep it out of the top tier.

Outdoor & adventure capability72
#1 of 13 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

AWD (standard on B6/T8, optional on B5 and fitted to most cars), roughly 8.5 in of ground clearance, Off Road mode with hill descent control and standard roof rails make it a capable ski-and-gravel car; no low range, locking diffs or skid plates, and the B5 is still sold in FWD form.

Gear & luggage flexibility74
#2 of 13 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

A flat floor and lie-flat 40/20/40 rear seat open up 63.3 cu ft, with roof rails, a power tailgate and tow-bar option for bulky gear; the 22.4 cu ft behind the seats is small for the class.

Handling & agility72
#7 of 13 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Responsive and secure at its limits, but less rewarding than the class benchmarks — testers rate it behind the Audi Q5 and BMW X3 for driver engagement.

Steering feel65
#9 of 13 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Accurate, quick and confidence-inspiring but essentially devoid of feedback — precise-but-numb, the mid band.

Braking confidence75
#4 of 13 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

A firm, easy-to-modulate pedal and competitively short panic stops in independent testing; no instrumented 2023 B5 70-0 figure is published, so it stays below the top band.

Powertrain smoothness & response69
#11 of 13 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The 247-hp B5 mild hybrid is adequately quick (about 6.6 s to 60) and smooth in normal driving thanks to its 48V starter-generator, but tip-in from a stop is hesitant and kickdowns are lazy; the T8 is much quicker but is not the volume trim.

Drivetrain noise & vibration68
#8 of 13 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Quiet at a cruise, but the 2.0L four sounds unpolished when revved — coarser than the sixes several rivals offer.

Mid-pack for a compact luxury SUV and tighter than the X3; the second-generation steering geometry is unchanged for 2023.

Driving position & ergonomics73
#7 of 13 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Excellent seats with a wide adjustment range and an upright, airy view out make it a good place to sit, but climate and many vehicle functions live in the small 9-in portrait touchscreen, a daily reach-and-glance penalty.

Fun-to-drive factor60
#7 of 13 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Deliberately calm rather than playful — numb steering, a firm-but-not-sporty ride and an ordinary B5 four-cylinder leave little to enjoy on a back road.

Standard equipment generosity68

The 2023 Core comes with the B5 mild hybrid, Google built-in infotainment with a 9-inch portrait touchscreen and 12.3-inch digital cluster, a panoramic moonroof and Volvo's full Pilot Assist/City Safety driver-assist suite — competitive for a luxury compact at its price. Front-drive is standard on the B5 (AWD is +$2,300), and ventilated seats, head-up display, surround camera and Bowers & Wilkins audio are held back for Plus/Ultimate or packages.

Feature value per dollar66
#6 of 13 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

At ~$44,500–$51,000 the B5 undercuts a comparably equipped BMW X3 or Audi Q5 slightly and brings a premium cabin and strong safety tech, but its 247 hp trails turbo-four German rivals and the more potent B6/T8 versions carry big price steps. Fair value rather than a bargain; CarEdge does single out the 2023 as the XC60's best-value model year on the used market.

Trim & configuration breadth80
#3 of 13 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Three grades (Core/Plus/Ultimate) with Bright/Dark themes span three powertrains — B5 mild hybrid in FWD or AWD, the stronger B6 AWD, and the T8 Recharge plug-in — topped by the T8 Polestar Engineered, covering roughly $44,500 to the low $70,000s. Unusually broad for the segment, including a FWD entry point and a performance PHEV halo.

Sales popularity & market acceptance76
#5 of 13 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The XC60 was Volvo's best seller in a record 2023 for the brand, with roughly 39,700 US units — a steady, rising seller, though still behind the class volume leaders (Lexus RX/NX, BMW X3, Audi Q5).

Brand desirability & image70
#8 of 13 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Volvo carries a real safety halo and well-regarded Scandinavian design and interiors, but sits a rung below the German brands in aspirational image, and mixed reliability perceptions temper the badge.

Deals & incentive availability62
#8 of 13 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

MY2023 sold through a supply-constrained market where luxury SUVs transacted near MSRP for much of the year; Volvo's support was mostly modest dealer cash (around $1,000 on select 2023 models) and lease programs rather than the deeper cash/low-APR combinations seen later.

Model freshness60
#7 of 13 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The second generation launched for MY2018 on SPA and received its mid-cycle refresh for MY2022 (Google built-in infotainment, revised fascia); 2023 brought the mild-hybrid-only gas lineup and the Core/Plus/Ultimate naming. A recently updated car on a six-year-old platform, with the next facelift years away.

Critical reception & awards70
#6 of 13 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Well reviewed for comfort, design and safety and an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ for 2023, but it ranks mid-pack in its class lists and is rarely the comparison-test winner against the BMW X3, Genesis GV70 or Porsche Macan. The generation's earlier World Car of the Year (2018) still lends it pedigree.
