The verdict
A mixed-report compact luxury suv, strong on safety and held back by ownership.
The 2025 XC60 is a calm, safe, beautifully finished compact luxury SUV with some of the best seats in the business, standard AWD, and Google built-in navigation and voice control that genuinely work. It is not quick or cheap to run: the volume B5 makes just 247 hp, needs premium fuel ($3,150/yr EPA estimate), and has a small cargo bay with the seats up. This is the last pre-facelift year, and Volvo's reliability standing has slipped, so it makes the most sense bought at a clear-out discount by a buyer who puts comfort and safety ahead of speed and resale value.

Detailed scoring by subject
1Performance & PowertrainOne of the XC60's weakest categories.1.29D
The volume 2025 B5 AWD uses a 2.0L turbo four with a 48V integrated starter-generator rated at 247 hp; the T8 plug-in hybrid tops the range at 455 hp. The 2025 facelift brought no mechanical changes.
Volvo Cars USA window-sticker documentation lists the B5 at 266 lb-ft (361 Nm), which matches the 360 Nm Wikipedia gives. Some secondary outlets still print an older 258 lb-ft figure, so confidence is held at MEDIUM.
Volvo quotes 6.5 seconds to 60 mph for the B5 AWD. Instrumented tests of the B5 tend to run slower, around 7 s or more, so confidence is MEDIUM.
The 48V ISG fills in off-idle torque and makes stop-start smooth, so the B5 pulls cleanly from low revs. The four-cylinder sounds coarse and strained near redline, and six-cylinder rivals feel more effortless.
The standard 8-speed automatic shifts smoothly and rarely hunts once moving. It has a known hesitation pulling away from a stop and kicks down lazily — calm and competent, not crisp.
The 2025 XC60 is rated at 3,500 lbs across the lineup, below the 4,400 lbs of the Audi Q5 and BMW X3.
AWD is standard on every 2025 US XC60, and EPA lists no front-drive variant. The B5 uses an on-demand clutch system and the T8 drives its rear axle electrically; there is no low range or torque vectoring.
About 8.5 in of ground clearance, an Off Road drive mode and hill descent control are enough for gravel and snow. It has no low range, lockers, skid plates or off-road trim.
Two powertrains, both electrified: the B5 mild hybrid and the T8 plug-in hybrid (36 mi EV range), including a Polestar Engineered tune. There is no six-cylinder and no BEV XC60.
2Efficiency & RangeGrades below the middle of the scale.1.45D
The volume 2025 B5 AWD with 48V mild-hybrid assist is EPA-rated at 26 MPG combined, mid-pack for a compact luxury SUV.
23 MPG city. The mild-hybrid ISG helps restarts but cannot propel the car electrically, so there is no full-hybrid city gain.
30 MPG highway is competitive with turbo-four rivals like the Audi Q5 and Mercedes GLC.
EPA total range of 489 miles from the 18.8-gallon tank at 26 MPG combined gives a comfortable distance between fill-ups.
At current EPA fuel-price assumptions the B5 costs $3,150 a year to fuel. That is steep for the segment, driven by 26 MPG combined plus the premium-fuel requirement.
EPA lists premium gasoline for both 2025 XC60 powertrains, which adds roughly 30–40 cents per gallon over regular. There is no regular-fuel or flex-fuel alternative.
3SafetyThe XC60's best-graded category.2.97B-
NHTSA rated the 2025 XC60 B5 AWD five stars overall, with five stars in frontal and side crash (including side pole) and four stars for rollover (14.7% rollover risk, no tip in the dynamic test).
The 2025 XC60 rates Good in small overlap front and in the updated moderate overlap front test, but only Acceptable in the updated side test, and it earned no 2025 Top Safety Pick or TSP+ (its last award was the 2024 TSP). Mostly Good with one Acceptable and no award puts it in the middle band.
City Safety AEB, lane departure warning and prevention, BLIS blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert and rear auto-braking are standard on every 2025 trim. Adaptive cruise was still not standard on the base Core trim; Volvo made it standard across the lineup only for 2026, so 2025 sits in the middle band.
The standard Collision Warning with Full Autobrake earns only Acceptable in the IIHS updated pedestrian front crash prevention test, and IIHS has published no updated vehicle-to-vehicle rating that would lift it higher.
BLIS with Steer Assist is standard from the Core trim up and actively steers back from a lane change rather than only warning, alongside standard rear cross-traffic alert and rear auto-braking. It is held short of the top because there is no safe-exit warning.
Lane keeping aid is standard on every trim. Pilot Assist lane centering, which reviewers find firm but not the smoothest in the segment, is standard from the Plus volume trim up and optional on the Core for 2025.
The volume Plus trim has full-speed stop-and-go adaptive cruise combined with Pilot Assist steering support into one highway-assist mode, and reviewers say it responds well to traffic. It scores below the 2026 car because base Core buyers still had to option it.
No 2025 XC60 trim offers hands-free highway driving. Pilot Assist is a hands-on system that requires the driver's hands on the wheel at all times.
IIHS rates the LED reflector headlights Acceptable on every trim. The rating is consistent across the range, but no configuration earns Good; curve-adaptive lighting and high-beam assist are included.
The second-generation body has an upright greenhouse and reasonable pillars for a luxury crossover; the view over the shoulder past the rear pillar is the weakest angle. A rear camera and parking sensors help, and the 360-degree camera is reserved for upper trims and packages.
IIHS rates LATCH ease of use Acceptable: two rear outboard positions have full LATCH hardware and a third has a tether anchor only. Rear doors and rear-seat space are good for the segment.
4Space & ComfortOne of the XC60's weakest categories.1.37D
The XC60 is strictly a two-row, five-seat compact luxury SUV in B5 and T8 form across Core, Plus and Ultra.
Volvo's published front headroom without the roof is 39.7 in; the panoramic roof standard on every 2025 trim trims it to about 38 in, which is what most measurement sites list.
Front legroom is unchanged across the second generation; modest by SUV-band standards but adequate for tall drivers.
Mid-pack second-row headroom for a compact luxury SUV, close to the X3 and GLC.
38 in of rear legroom is among the best in the compact luxury class, ahead of the X3 and GLC (~36.4 in).
No third row is offered at all; seven-seat buyers are directed to the XC90. Scored low per the rule that a missing third row is scored, not omitted.
Volvo's behind-the-seat figure is small even for compact luxury SUVs, sitting at the bottom of the SUV band; the T8's battery packaging costs a little more.
Seats-folded volume is competitive with the X3 and ahead of the GLC and GV70, helped by a flat floor.
Competitive everyday storage — decent door bins, a covered console, a flat load floor with grocery-bag holders and an underfloor tray — but 2025 still has the pre-refresh console; the redesigned roll-top console and reworked cupholders arrived only with the MY2026 facelift.
Volvo's front seats are consistently ranked among the best in any segment for long stints, and the rear bench is roomier than most rivals'; massage and ventilation are available on Ultra.
Settled at speed, but the steel-spring suspension on the volume Plus trim gets busy and occasionally jagged over broken pavement, especially on larger wheels; the air suspension that fixes it is an option.
Hushed at a cruise with little wind noise, but tire roar is more audible than in the quietest German and Lexus rivals, and the extra insulation and laminated glass added for 2026 are absent on the 2025.
Heated front seats, dual-zone climate, panoramic roof and wireless charging are standard on Core; Plus adds an air purifier; Ultra brings ventilated seats and four-zone climate; a Climate package with heated wheel and rear seats is available across trims, plus app preconditioning.
5Cost of OwnershipThe XC60's lowest-graded category.1.06D
2025 is the last pre-facelift US model year of the second-generation XC60 (2018–). The 'Ultimate' grade was renamed 'Ultra', and the B5 48V mild hybrid stays the base engine. The entry B5 Core lists at $47,050 plus destination, about $600 more than in 2024.
In the US the mid-grade B5 Plus is the XC60's volume configuration: the Core is a sparse entry and the T8 plug-in costs about $11,000 more. A typical 2025 transaction therefore starts near $53,000 before options.
The mechanicals carry over unchanged from 2024, so the cost projections do too. CarEdge puts the XC60 below the luxury-SUV average while Edmunds' True Cost to Own runs higher, so a blended figure lands mid-pack. Volvo's 3 yr/36k complimentary maintenance covers the early services.
The XC60 depreciates roughly in line with, or slightly worse than, the luxury compact SUV class, keeping about half its price after five years. The final pre-facelift year faces some extra pressure once the refreshed 2026 car arrives.
Volvo's New Vehicle Limited Warranty runs 4 years or 50,000 miles. That is the German-luxury norm and a year longer than mainstream brands.
Volvo offers no standalone extended powertrain warranty in the US. The engine and drivetrain are covered only within the same 4 yr/50,000 mi basic term, the weakest structure in the class.
2025 XC60s still fall inside Volvo's MY2021–2025.5 Complimentary Factory Scheduled Maintenance program: three services over 3 years / 36,000 miles. Add 4 years of unlimited-mileage roadside assistance and a Google built-in services trial, and that matches BMW's 3-year program.
$52,995 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (49% retained, or about $25,968) leaves about $27,027 in depreciation. Add the projected $6,500 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $33,527 in total.
6Reliability & QualityMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.07C
Both sources put the gas XC60 around average. J.D. Power's 74/100 Quality & Reliability score is the middle of its range, and Consumer Reports rates the 2025 gas model slightly above average. Both flag in-car electronics (the Google-based infotainment and TCAM telematics module) as the main trouble spot, and the PHEV variant rates lower at 42/100.
Volvo's dependability standing has fallen to near the bottom of the industry. It placed near last in the 2025 J.D. Power VDS and next-to-last in the 2026 study, and sits mid-to-low in Consumer Reports' brand rankings. Both note that software problems are driving the decline.
The 2025 gas XC60 has no powertrain or fire recalls. It does have a fleet-wide rearview camera software recall whose first fix had to be replaced, plus a tiny seat-bolt campaign. The PHEV-only brake-loss and earlier battery-fire recalls do not cover this gas trim, but they weigh on the generation's record.
The B5 pairs Volvo's Drive-E 2.0L turbo four with a 48V mild-hybrid system and an Aisin 8-speed automatic. The powertrain carried over unchanged, and the gearbox family has a solid record. The Drive-E engine's earlier oil-consumption reputation (2015-2018 T5/T6) and the added mild-hybrid electronics keep it out of the top band.
Reviewers consistently rank the XC60's cabin among the best in the compact luxury class. It has real wood and metal trim, broad soft-touch coverage, and optional crystal Orrefors shifter and Nappa leather on upper trims. The materials match or beat German rivals at the price.
The SPA-platform body is mature, eight years into production, and physical assembly is generally tight. Initial-quality complaints center on software and electronics glitches rather than panel gaps or rattles, and Volvo's below-average J.D. Power IQS/VDS showings reflect that.
Volvo has roughly 280 US retailers, which is adequate in metro areas but thin in rural regions next to Lexus, BMW or Mercedes-Benz. Some recall fixes arrive over the air, which partly offsets the travel distance. Service satisfaction is mid-pack.
Parts for a high-volume SPA-platform model are readily available, and the aftermarket is reasonable. Labor and electronics module costs (TCAM, sensors, camera modules) run at typical European-luxury levels, above Lexus or Acura.
7Technology & InfotainmentOne of the XC60's strongest categories.2.86B-
The 2025 XC60 keeps the 9-inch portrait center display; the 11.2-inch screen arrived only with the MY2026 facelift, leaving the 2025 small against the X3 (14.9 in) and GLC (11.9 in).
Google built-in makes the software logic good, but the small portrait screen buries climate and most vehicle functions in touch menus, and reviewers and owners report slow responses and occasional blank-screen glitches; the faster Snapdragon hardware is a 2026 change.
Apple CarPlay is standard but wired-only, and Android Auto was added only by a December 2024 software update, also via USB cable; no wireless projection is offered on any trim.
Google built-in provides native Google Maps with live traffic and a natural-language Google Assistant for navigation, climate and media — the benchmark for in-car voice and nav, which owners rarely bypass.
The optional 15-speaker, 1,100-watt Bowers & Wilkins system is among the best factory systems sold; the 14-speaker Harman Kardon (standard on Ultra) is a strong mid step and the base system is respectable.
A 12.3-inch fully digital driver display is standard on all trims and can show Google Maps, but it offers only a few fixed layouts and is the pre-2026 unit.
Google-built-in Volvos receive whole-vehicle OTA updates that add features — e.g. Android Auto in December 2024 and Volvo's 2025 rollout of the new interface to cars back to MY2020.
The Volvo Cars app covers remote start/preconditioning, lock/unlock, locate and status without a paywall, but there is no phone-as-key on the SPA1 XC60 and the app has a reputation for slow wake-ups.
Inductive phone charging is standard and USB-C ports serve both rows, but there is no 120V household outlet — only 12V sockets in the console and cargo area.
Push-button start and app remote start are standard, with full keyless entry and a hands-free tailgate on the volume Plus trim ('remote key' is a Plus addition); no phone-as-key.
Front and rear park assist is standard on Core and the 360-degree camera is standard on the volume Plus trim, with Park Assist Pilot available; image quality is good rather than class-leading.
A conventional windshield HUD is offered only on the top Ultra trim; the volume Core and Plus do without.
8Use-Case FitGrades above the middle of the scale.2.72B-
Generous 38-in rear legroom, wide rear doors, a 40/20/40 lie-flat rear seat and Volvo's available integrated booster cushions make family logistics easy; held back by an Acceptable LATCH rating and a small behind-seat cargo bay for strollers.
Five-star NHTSA overall plus standard City Safety autobrake, BLIS and rear auto-braking; the volume Plus adds Pilot Assist and the 360 camera, but adaptive cruise is not on the base Core, and IIHS gives only Acceptable in the updated side test with no 2025 award.
Excellent seats front and rear and 489 miles of range suit a family of four, but cargo behind the second row is small for the class, four-zone climate is Ultra-only, and there is no rear entertainment.
Light steering, smooth 8-speed, great seats and stop-and-go Pilot Assist on the Plus make commuting easy, but the slow 9-inch touchscreen for climate, a beat of hesitation from rest, and an intrusive stop-start detract.
26 MPG combined on required premium fuel ($3,150/yr EPA estimate) plus luxury-brand tires, service and insurance make per-mile costs above average; complimentary 3-yr/36k maintenance on the 2025 softens it slightly.
A 37.4-ft turning circle, compact 185-in length and upright greenhouse make it easy to place; front/rear park assist is standard and the volume Plus gets the 360 camera.
Light-duty only: 3,500 lbs towing properly equipped, modest payload and a 247-hp four working hard under load; well short of the Q5 and X3's 4,400+ lbs.
Proven SPA platform and 2.0T four with above-average RepairPal reliability, but a luxury interior, large low-profile wheels and dealer parts pricing make it a with-care vehicle rather than a work tool.
Basics only: 12V sockets, roof rails, power tailgate, cargo divider and Volvo's accessory tow bar and mats; no AC power, no tie-down system and no upfit ecosystem.
Superb seats, a quiet-at-cruise cabin, 489 miles of range and Pilot Assist on the volume Plus make it a strong mile-eater; tire roar, a firm-ish ride on steel springs and no hands-free mode keep it out of the very top.
Standard AWD, ~9 in of ground clearance, Off Road mode with hill descent and a full Volvo carrier ecosystem make it a capable gravel-road and ski-trip vehicle, but there is no low range, skid plating or outlet, and towing tops out at 3,500 lbs.
A 40/20/40 lie-flat seat, a wall-to-wall flat floor out to 63.3 cu ft, power tailgate, roof rails and available tow bar handle bulky gear well; volume with the seats up is small for the class.
9Driving ExperienceOne of the XC60's strongest categories.2.76B-
Secure and composed with good body control for a comfort-oriented luxury crossover, but body roll arrives earlier than in the X3 or Macan, so it sits below the class's dynamic benchmarks.
Accurate and consistently weighted with selectable effort, but essentially devoid of feedback.
Firm, easily modulated pedal and competitively short panic stops; no 2025 instrumented 70-0 figure for the B5 is published.
The B5 mild hybrid is smooth once moving, but has a noticeable tip-in delay and an intrusive stop-start; the 6.5-s 0-60 time is adequate rather than eager.
Quiet at a cruise and unobtrusive in normal driving, but the 2.0-liter four sounds plain and strained when extended, versus the sixes some rivals offer.
Volvo's 11.4 m (37.4 ft) curb-to-curb turning circle is mid-pack for a compact luxury SUV; unchanged for 2025.
Class-leading seats, a wide adjustment range and high, airy sightlines, but climate controls live in the small 9-inch touchscreen — a real everyday distraction.
Deliberately calm and refined rather than playful — pleasant but forgettable in B5 form, with numb steering and no sense of occasion.
10Value & Market PositionMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.61C+
Every 2025 XC60 comes with AWD, the B5 mild hybrid, a panoramic moonroof, Google built-in infotainment on a 9-inch portrait screen, a 12.3-inch digital cluster, heated front seats and Volvo's full driver-assist suite. That is a good base spec. Ventilated seats, a head-up display, the surround-view camera and Bowers & Wilkins audio stay locked behind Plus/Ultra, and the older 9-inch screen trails the 2026 car's 11.2-inch unit.
The B5 gives only 247 hp and a modest 0–60 at a price that matches a quicker BMW X3 or Genesis GV70, and the 455-hp T8 starts at $58,050, a big step up. Content for the price is fair rather than a bargain, though cash incentives narrow the gap in practice.
There are three core trims (Core, Plus and the newly renamed Ultra), each offered with the B5 mild hybrid or the T8 plug-in hybrid, plus a Black Edition, a Dark Theme and the T8 Polestar Engineered. Prices span about $48,300 to $76,500, from budget to loaded with a performance halo. AWD-only, packaged options limit fine-tuning.
The XC60 is Volvo's best-selling US model and the world's top-selling Volvo. US sales reached roughly 38,800 in 2024 and rose 6% to 41,105 in calendar 2025, the year this model year was on sale. That is strong and rising, though it still trails class volume leaders like the Lexus NX, BMW X3 and Audi Q5.
Volvo carries a genuine safety halo and widely praised Scandinavian design and interiors. Its image sits a rung below the German premium brands: sensible rather than aspirational. Middling J.D. Power dependability and Consumer Reports reliability ratings undercut the badge.
As the outgoing pre-facelift year, the 2025 XC60 carried publicly advertised cash allowances and subsidized financing. Clear-out pressure from the 2026 facelift made below-MSRP deals common without fire-sale pricing.
In the US, 2025 is the last pre-facelift year of a generation launched in 2017 on SPA. Its last update was the 2022 Google infotainment refresh, and the 2026 facelift (new grille, 11.2-inch screen, new cluster) arrived months later. A 2025 buyer gets an aging design with the redesign about to land.
Reviews are warm but split. U.S. News ranks the XC60 near the top of luxury compact SUVs for comfort, safety and interior, while Edmunds marks it down on tech, performance and value next to the X3 and GV70. It is rarely a comparison-test winner, and its IIHS Top Safety Pick run ran through 2024.
