The verdict

A mixed-report compact luxury suv, strong on safety and held back by efficiency.

The 2021 XC60 is one of the safest and most comfortable compact luxury SUVs of its year. It earned five NHTSA stars and an IIHS Top Safety Pick+, and it has class-leading seats, a beautifully finished cabin and 38 inches of rear legroom. The trade-offs are a small 22.4 cu ft cargo hold, a thirsty premium-fuel T5 that costs about $3,400 a year to run, and the aging Sensus infotainment that Volvo replaced the following year. As a used buy, it makes the most sense for shoppers who put safety and comfort ahead of cargo space, running costs and the latest tech.

Detailed scoring by subject

1Performance & PowertrainOne of the XC60's weakest categories.1.25D
Horsepower
250 hp (T5 2.0L turbo); 316 hp T6, 400 hp T8 Recharge, 415 hp Polestar Engineered
25/100
#6 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The volume 2021 XC60 is the T5 — a conventional 2.0L turbo four (no mild hybrid yet; Wikipedia notes conventional engines were only dropped in the US for 2023) rated 250 hp. The lineup tops out with the 400-hp T8 Recharge plug-in hybrid.

Torque
258 lb-ft (T5); 295 lb-ft T6, 472 lb-ft T8 Recharge
35/100
#8 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The T5's 258 lb-ft is typical for a compact luxury turbo four; the T6 adds 295 lb-ft and the T8's electric rear motor lifts combined torque well above 400 lb-ft.

0–60 mph time
≈6.3 s (T5, instrumented tests 6.1–6.5 s); T6 ≈5.6 s, T8 ≈4.9 s
53/100
#6 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Instrumented tests of the unchanged second-generation T5 cluster between 6.1 and 6.5 s; 6.3 s is the midpoint and matches a recorded T5 Momentum test. Competitive with turbo-four rivals.

Powertrain refinement66
#8 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The T5 turbo four pulls willingly once boost builds, but there is some low-rpm hesitation off the line, a fairly intrusive stop-start system (no 48V ISG to smooth it in 2021), and a coarse note when worked hard. The T8's engine/motor transitions are well masked.

Transmission behavior66
#6 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Every 2021 XC60 uses the Aisin 8-speed automatic, smooth once underway and rarely hunting on the highway, but with a hesitant step-off and slow kickdowns. Competent rather than crisp.

Max towing capacity
3,500 lbs (all powertrains, properly equipped)
36/100
#4 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Volvo rates the 2021 XC60 at 3,500 lbs across T5, T6 and T8 — below the 4,400 lbs of the Audi Q5 and BMW X3.

AWD/4WD availability72
#7 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

AWD is optional on the T5 (FWD standard) and standard on T6 and T8, so it is widely available; the system is a clutch-based on-demand setup (electric rear axle on the T8) with no low range or torque vectoring.

Off-road capability40
#3 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

About 8.5 in of ground clearance, an Off Road drive mode and hill descent control on AWD models handle gravel, snow and dirt tracks, but there is no low range, locker, skid plating or off-road trim.

Powertrain lineup breadth76
#2 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Three distinct 2021 powertrains — T5 turbo four (FWD or AWD), the supercharged-and-turbocharged T6 AWD, and the T8 Recharge plug-in hybrid (plus a 415-hp Polestar Engineered T8). Includes an electrified option but no six-cylinder or full EV.

2Efficiency & RangeThe XC60's lowest-graded category.0.69F
3SafetyThe XC60's best-graded category.3.24B+
NHTSA overall rating
5 stars overall (5 frontal, 5 side, 4 rollover)
100/100
#1 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

NHTSA gave every 2021 XC60 variant it rated (T5 FWD, T5 AWD, T6 AWD) a 5-star overall rating. The T5 AWD scored 5 stars frontal, 5 side and 5 side pole, plus 4 stars for rollover.

IIHS awards & crashworthiness88
#3 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The 2021 XC60 earned an IIHS Top Safety Pick+, with Good ratings in the driver and passenger small overlap, moderate overlap, original side, roof strength and head restraint tests. The updated side test, run later on a 2023 car and applied back to this body, is Acceptable, which is the only blemish.

Standard ADAS suite breadth70
#4 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Every 2021 XC60 comes with City Safety AEB, lane keeping aid, BLIS with steer assist, cross traffic alert and rear auto-braking. On the volume T5 Momentum, adaptive cruise and Pilot Assist come only in the optional Advanced Package, so ACC is trim- and package-gated.

Automatic emergency braking performance88
#1 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

IIHS rates the standard City Safety system Superior for vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention and Advanced/Superior for daytime pedestrians, which met the 2021 TSP+ criteria. That era of IIHS testing did not rate nighttime pedestrian detection.

Blind-spot & cross-traffic coverage82
#1 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

BLIS with Steer Assist, Cross Traffic Alert and rear auto-braking are standard from the Momentum trim, so the system intervenes rather than only warning. There is no safe-exit alert for rear occupants.

Lane keeping & centering70
#2 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Lane Keeping Aid and Oncoming Lane Mitigation are standard. True lane centering comes only with Pilot Assist, which is optional on the volume Momentum through the Advanced Package. Where fitted, reviewers find Pilot Assist's centering competent but prone to some wander on weaker lane markings.

Adaptive cruise & highway assist72
#3 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Pilot Assist pairs full-speed stop-and-go adaptive cruise with steering support and is well integrated. On the 2021 volume Momentum, though, it is a package option rather than standard equipment.

Hands-free driving availability10
#2 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

No 2021 XC60 offers hands-free highway driving. Pilot Assist is a hands-on Level 2 system that requires steering input.

Headlight performance65
#3 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

IIHS rates the standard curve-adaptive LED headlights with high-beam assist Acceptable. That was enough for TSP+, but no configuration earns a Good rating.

Outward visibility74
#4 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The second-generation XC60 has an upright greenhouse and decent forward sightlines, but thick rear pillars limit over-the-shoulder views. A rearview camera and rear parking sensors are standard, while the 360-degree camera requires the optional Advanced Package on the Momentum.

Child-seat (LATCH) usability70
#5 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

IIHS rates LATCH ease of use Acceptable. The two outboard rear seats have full LATCH hardware and the center seat has a tether anchor only. Rear door openings and legroom are reasonable for the class.

4Space & ComfortOne of the XC60's weakest categories.1.24D
Seating capacity
5 seats (2+3, every trim and powertrain)
25/100
#1 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The 2021 XC60 is a two-row, five-seat compact luxury SUV in every T5/T6/T8 configuration; no third row is offered.

Front headroom
39.7 in without moonroof (38.0 in with the panoramic moonroof standard on the T5 Momentum)
54/100
#5 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The second-generation body is unchanged for 2021, so Volvo's 39.7 in no-roof figure applies; the panoramic moonroof that most 2021 cars carry trims it to 38.0 in.

Front legroom
41.5 in
33/100
#4 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Front legroom is adequate rather than generous, and it is the same across the second generation.

Rear headroom
38.0 in
50/100
#9 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Rear headroom is mid-pack for the compact luxury class.

Rear legroom
38.0 in
67/100
#3 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Rear legroom is a real strength: 38.0 in is near the top of the compact luxury class and well ahead of the X3 and GLC (about 36.4 in).

Third-row usability12
#4 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

No 2021 XC60 has a third row; buyers who need seven seats are pointed to the XC90. The item requires a low-band score for two-row SUVs.

Cargo/trunk volume
22.4 cu ft behind the second row
0/100
#8 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Cargo space behind the rear seat is small even for a compact luxury SUV and sits at the floor of the SUV band; the X3 offers about 28.7 cu ft.

Max cargo volume
63.3 cu ft with the rear seat folded
18/100
#2 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

With the seats folded, volume is competitive with the class, helped by a flat load floor.

In-cabin storage & clever solutions64
#1 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Everyday storage is competitive: door pockets, a covered console, a grocery-bag holder and underfloor space in the cargo bay. Nothing stands out, wireless charging costs extra on the Momentum, and the small hold behind the seats limits the cargo area.

Seat comfort86
#1 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Volvo's front seats are a long-standing benchmark for long-distance support, and the rear bench is roomier than most rivals'. Ventilated and massaging seats are reserved for the Inscription.

Ride quality70
#6 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The ride is composed most of the time but firmer than the luxury norm, with sharp impacts over potholes on steel springs and larger wheels. Air suspension is an option on upper trims.

Cabin quietness74
#5 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The cabin is mostly quiet at a cruise, but the T5 four-cylinder sounds coarse when revved and tire noise is more audible than in the quietest rivals.

Climate & comfort features72
#3 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Dual-zone climate is standard and remote preconditioning works through Volvo On Call. On the volume Momentum, though, heated rear seats and a heated wheel are package options, and ventilated seats and four-zone climate are confined to the Inscription.

5Cost of OwnershipGrades below the middle of the scale.1.50D
Base MSRP
$42,795 (T5 Momentum FWD, incl. $1,095 destination)
56/100
#4 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

MY2021 is a carry-over year of the second generation before the 2022 facelift; the lineup still used Momentum/R-Design/Inscription naming with the conventional 250-hp T5 turbo as the entry engine, opening at $41,700 before destination.

Volume-Trim Price
~$47,595 (T5 Momentum AWD + Premium Package, incl. destination); range $42,795–$70,595 from T5 Momentum FWD to T8 Polestar Engineered
50/100
#3 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The T5 Momentum with AWD was the core of US XC60 volume, and most dealer stock carried the Premium Package (~$2,500), putting a typical transaction around $47,600; CarEdge's $51,558 new-price figure for the 2021 reflects a richer mix including R-Design/Inscription and T6.

5-Year Maintenance & Repair Cost
~$5,500 over 5 years (source estimates ~$4,100–$7,000)
62/100
#4 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

CarEdge projects XC60 maintenance and repairs below the luxury-SUV average while Edmunds' cost-to-own figures for this generation run higher; a blended mid-pack figure, with the first three scheduled services covered by Volvo's complimentary maintenance program.

5-Year Resale Value Retention
~49% of MSRP retained at ~5 years (source range ~48–51%)
30/100
#3 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

With the 2021 now roughly five years old, real market data is available: it has kept about half its original price, in line with or slightly below luxury compact SUV peers.

Basic warranty
4 years / 50,000 miles
50/100
#3 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Volvo's New Vehicle Limited Warranty runs 4 years or 50,000 miles — a year longer than the mainstream norm and matched to the German luxury standard.

Powertrain warranty
4 years / 50,000 miles (concurrent with basic); 8 yr / 100,000 mi T8 Recharge hybrid battery
0/100
#6 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Volvo offers no separate, longer powertrain warranty in the US — engine and drivetrain are covered only for the concurrent 4 yr/50,000 mi term, the weakest structure in a segment where Genesis, Lexus and Acura go longer.

Complimentary maintenance & perks80
#3 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

MY2021 XC60s are covered by Volvo's Complimentary Factory Scheduled Maintenance (3 services / 3 yr / 36,000 mi), on par with BMW's and Audi's programs, plus 4 years of unlimited-mileage roadside assistance and a Volvo On Call connected-services subscription.

Effective 5-Year Ownership Cost
$29,773 (≈$24,273 depreciation + $5,500 maintenance)
52/100
#3 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

$47,595 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (49% retained, or about $23,322) leaves about $24,273 in depreciation. Add the projected $5,500 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $29,773 in total.

6Reliability & QualityMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.96C-
Predicted reliability57
#5 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Consumer Reports places the 2021 XC60 at about average reliability for its model year, with owner-reported trouble spots in brakes (premature pad/rotor wear, ABS and parking-brake faults) and failing engine cooling fans; that is a mid-pack result, below the Lexus/Acura tier of the class.

Brand reliability track record42
#8 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Through the period covering 2021 models Volvo sat below the industry average in J.D. Power dependability and initial-quality studies and mid-to-lower pack in Consumer Reports brand rankings — a lower-third brand standing that later deteriorated to near-last.

Recall & TSB history64
#3 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The gas 2021 XC60 carries four NHTSA campaigns, all touching safety systems but each covering a small production batch rather than a systemic design defect; it avoids both the large 2022+ rearview-camera software recall and (as a gas model) the PHEV battery-fire recall.

Powertrain durability reputation60
#5 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The volume 2021 T5 uses Volvo's mature 2.0L Drive-E/VEA turbo four with the Aisin eight-speed automatic — a widely deployed combination without a systemic failure pattern — but CR owners flag cooling-fan failures that can lead to overheating, and the supercharged-plus-turbocharged T6 adds complexity.

Interior material quality84
#1 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The second-generation XC60's Scandinavian cabin — driftwood and wood inlays, quality leather, knurled controls — is consistently rated among the best in the compact luxury class against the GLC, X3 and Q5, with only a few hard plastics in low-touch zones.

Fit & finish62
#6 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Physical assembly is generally tight and reviewers report few squeaks or rattles, but the brand's objective initial-quality results in this period were below average, driven mostly by electronics (Sensus infotainment) rather than panel or trim defects.

Dealer & service network58
#8 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Volvo's US retailer footprint is adequate in metro areas but thin nationally versus the German luxury brands, while the 2021 ownership package was comparatively generous with three years of complimentary scheduled maintenance.

Parts availability & repair cost56
#5 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Repair frequency and annual spend are about average to slightly better than the luxury compact class, but parts are largely dealer-channel and European-sourced with a thinner independent aftermarket than Japanese or domestic rivals.

7Technology & InfotainmentMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.87C-
Touchscreen size
9.0 in portrait Sensus touchscreen (standard on all trims; no larger option)
24/100
#6 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Every 2021 XC60 uses the same 9-inch portrait Sensus display, which is small for the compact luxury class.

Infotainment UX & responsiveness58
#8 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Sensus uses a tablet-style swipe interface with sensible tiles, but climate and most vehicle settings are buried in touch menus on a small portrait screen, and reviewers note lag and a steep learning curve. By 2021 it was the aging system the 2022 Google built-in update replaced.

Wireless CarPlay / Android Auto62
#5 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are both standard on every 2021 XC60 but connect by USB cable only. Wireless projection was never offered on Sensus, so this lands in the wired-standard band.

Voice control & native navigation48
#11 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Sensus voice control handles only rigid, command-style phrasing, and native navigation is clunky to program. Most owners bypass both for CarPlay or Android Auto, which puts this below the stronger Google- and MBUX-based systems.

Audio system quality88
#1 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The optional 15-speaker Bowers & Wilkins system is among the best factory audio systems sold, and a 14-speaker Harman Kardon setup is available on the volume Momentum. The base system is respectable.

Digital instrument cluster78
#3 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

A 12.3-inch fully digital driver display is standard on every trim and can show the navigation map, but it offers only a few fixed layouts and is far less configurable than Audi's Virtual Cockpit.

OTA update capability35
#9 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Sensus-era cars get map updates over the air, but system and vehicle software updates require a dealer visit. The Google built-in OTA updates that later XC60s received never came to the 2021 car.

Companion app & remote functions64
#6 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The Volvo On Call app covers remote start and preconditioning, lock and unlock, vehicle location and status, and send-to-car destinations. There is no phone-as-key, and owners report slow responses and connection drops.

Charging ports & device power52
#10 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

There are USB ports up front plus charging-only ports and 12V sockets, but wireless charging is an Advanced Package option on the volume Momentum and there is no household AC outlet. Most 2021 ports are the older USB-A type.

Keyless & remote access62
#11 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Push-button start, a power tailgate and app-based remote start are available, but on the volume Momentum keyless entry and the hands-free tailgate sit in an option package, and there is no phone-as-key.

Camera & parking aids66
#6 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

A rear camera and rear parking sensors are standard. Front sensors come with the Premium Package, and the 360-degree Surroundview camera with the Advanced Package, on the volume Momentum. Park Assist Pilot is available.

Head-up display availability70
#2 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

A graphical windshield head-up display can be ordered even on the volume Momentum, through the Advanced Package. That is wider availability than the 2023 car (Ultimate only), but it is never standard.

8Use-Case FitOne of the XC60's strongest categories.2.59C+
Kid & car-seat practicality80
#1 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

This is a strong family box: 38 in of rear legroom, wide rear doors, a 40/20/40 rear seat that folds flat, and Volvo's optional integrated booster cushions. It is held back by an Acceptable LATCH rating, with full hardware in only the outboard seats, and a small 22.4 cu ft hold for strollers.

Family safety package84
#2 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

It earned NHTSA five stars overall and a 2021 IIHS Top Safety Pick+. City Safety AEB, BLIS with steer assist, cross-traffic alert and rear auto-braking are standard, but adaptive cruise and Pilot Assist require the Advanced Package on the volume Momentum, and the headlights rate only Acceptable.

Family road-trip comfort74
#1 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Excellent seats front and rear and about 450 miles of range make it a fine four-person tourer. The firm ride, small cargo hold behind the seats, dual-zone climate on the volume trim and no rear entertainment hold it back.

Daily driving ease74
#4 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Light steering, good sightlines and great seats make it easy to live with, and the T5 is responsive off the line. It loses points for a stiff ride over potholes, a fiddly Sensus touchscreen that controls climate, and stop-and-go adaptive cruise that is optional on the volume Momentum.

Commuting cost efficiency52
#5 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The volume T5 AWD returns 24 MPG combined (21 city) on recommended premium, about $3,400 a year by EPA estimates, and luxury-brand tires, insurance and service add to that. The T8 plug-in would cover most commutes electrically, but it is the costly optional powertrain.

Parking & maneuverability74
#3 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

A 37.4 ft turning circle, a compact footprint and upright glass make it easy to place. Rear sensors and a rear camera are standard, but front sensors and the 360-degree camera are package options on the volume Momentum.

Work capability52
#2 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

It handles light duty only. The 3,500 lb tow rating across all powertrains covers a small trailer or jet skis but trails the 4,400–5,000 lb of the Q5 and X3, and there is no bed and only modest payload.

Durability for work duty55
#1 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The SPA platform, 2.0L four and Aisin eight-speed are well proven, but this is a luxury cabin on low-profile tires with no fleet variant and dealer-priced parts. Consumer Reports owners flag brake wear and cooling-fan failures for 2021.

Jobsite & upfit practicality42
#2 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

It has the basics only: 12V sockets in the console and cargo area, roof rails, a power tailgate and an accessory tow bar. There is no bed, no AC inverter and no commercial upfit support.

Long-distance comfort & range78
#1 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Class-best seats, a mostly quiet cabin and about 450 miles between fill-ups make it a strong highway car. The firm ride on broken pavement, the coarse four-cylinder under load and Pilot Assist being optional on the volume Momentum keep it out of the top tier.

Outdoor & adventure capability70
#2 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

AWD (standard on the T6 and T8, optional on the T5 and fitted to most cars), about 8.5 in of ground clearance, an Off Road mode with hill descent control, and roof rails make it a capable ski-and-gravel car. There is no low range, no locking differential and no skid plates, and the T5 is still sold in FWD form.

Gear & luggage flexibility72
#2 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

A flat floor and a 40/20/40 rear seat that folds flat open up 63.3 cu ft, and roof rails, a power tailgate and a tow-bar option help with bulky gear. The 22.4 cu ft behind the seats is small for the class.

Handling & agility72
#6 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

It is responsive and secure at its limits but less rewarding than the class benchmarks; testers place it behind the Audi Q5, BMW X3 and Porsche Macan for driver engagement.

Steering feel65
#7 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The steering is accurate, quick and light but has essentially no feedback, which puts it in the precise-but-numb mid band.

Braking confidence74
#2 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The pedal is firm and easy to modulate, and panic stops are competitively short in independent testing. Consumer Reports owners report premature pad and rotor wear for 2021, so the score stays below the top band.

Powertrain smoothness & response70
#5 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The 250-hp T5 turbo is brisk (about 6.3 s to 60 mph) and the Aisin eight-speed shifts smoothly. Some turbo lag on tip-in and a sometimes abrupt stop/start system keep it in the mid band.

Drivetrain noise & vibration67
#6 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

It is quiet at a cruise, but the 2.0L four sounds unpolished when revved and coarser than the sixes several rivals offer.

Turning circle
37.4 ft curb-to-curb (18.7 ft radius)
58/100
#2 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The turning circle is mid-pack for a compact luxury SUV and tighter than the X3's; the second-generation steering geometry is unchanged for 2021.

Driving position & ergonomics71
#6 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Excellent seats with a wide adjustment range and an upright, airy view out make it a good place to sit. Climate and many vehicle functions live in the small 9-in Sensus portrait screen, though, which means reaching and glancing away every day.

Fun-to-drive factor60
#7 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

It is deliberately calm rather than playful. Numb steering and a firm but not sporty ride leave little to enjoy on a back road, though the T5 has decent punch.

10Value & Market PositionMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.53C+
Standard equipment generosity64

The 2021 T5 Momentum includes the 250-hp turbo, Sensus 9-inch portrait touchscreen with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, 12.3-inch digital cluster, panoramic moonroof, leatherette and the City Safety suite, but FWD is standard (AWD +$2,300) and Pilot Assist, blind-spot monitoring, heated seats and keyless entry largely sit in the ~$2,500 Premium Package — competitive but not generous for the class.

Feature value per dollar64
#7 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The T5 roughly matches German rivals on price with a premium cabin and strong safety content, but its pricing climbs quickly once options and the T6/T8 powertrains are added, and the aging Sensus infotainment was lagging by 2021. Fair value rather than a bargain; resale holds about half its value.

Trim & configuration breadth82
#2 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Three grades (Momentum/R-Design/Inscription) across three powertrains — T5 turbo in FWD or AWD, T6 turbo/supercharged AWD and T8 Recharge plug-in — plus the T8 Polestar Engineered halo, spanning roughly $42,800 to $70,600. Unusually broad for the segment, including a FWD entry and a performance PHEV.

Sales popularity & market acceptance76
#4 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The XC60 was Volvo's US best seller in 2021 at 41,582 units, up 30% over 2020 — a strong, rising seller, though still behind class volume leaders like the Lexus RX/NX and BMW X3.

Brand desirability & image70
#6 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Volvo carries a real safety halo and well-regarded Scandinavian design, but sits a rung below the German brands in aspirational image, and mixed owner reliability perceptions temper the badge.

Deals & incentive availability62
#5 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Early in the 2021 model year Volvo still ran typical lease and subvented-APR support, but the semiconductor shortage from mid-2021 drained inventory and pushed luxury SUVs toward MSRP, so the year's deal availability was modest overall.

Model freshness50

MY2021 is the fourth year of a generation that launched for MY2018 on SPA, sold just before the MY2022 facelift that added Google built-in infotainment — a 2021 buyer gets the pre-refresh car with the older Sensus system and a redesign-adjacent update imminent.

Critical reception & awards70
#4 of 11 Compact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Well reviewed for comfort, design and safety and an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ for 2021, but generally a mid-pack finisher in class rankings and rarely the comparison-test winner against the BMW X3, Porsche Macan or new Genesis GV70; the generation's 2018 World Car of the Year still lends pedigree.
