The verdict
A mixed-report compact luxury suv, strong on safety and held back by efficiency.
The 2022 XC60 is the facelift year that brought Google built-in infotainment and the 247-hp B5 mild hybrid, and it is one of the safest and most comfortable compact luxury SUVs of its time: NHTSA five stars, an IIHS Top Safety Pick+, and some of the best seats in the business. The trade-offs are real, though — a small 22.4 cu ft cargo hold, premium fuel that costs roughly $3,400 a year, a short 4-year/50,000-mile powertrain warranty and so-so resale. Buy it for the cabin, the calm and the safety; look elsewhere if you need hauling space, punch or rock-solid long-term ownership costs.

Detailed scoring by subject
1Performance & PowertrainOne of the XC60's weakest categories.1.27D
The volume 2022 XC60 is the B5 AWD — a 2.0L turbo four with a 48V integrated starter-generator making 247 hp. EPA's 2022 listing confirms the B5/B6 mild hybrids had already replaced the T5/T6 for the US by 2022, a year earlier than the Wikipedia digest implies; the range tops out with the T8 Recharge (400 hp, 455 hp in the mid-year Extended Range/Polestar tune).
The 2022 B5 produces 258 lb-ft; the turbocharged-and-supercharged B6 makes 310 lb-ft and the T8 Recharge up to 523 lb-ft combined.
Volvo's quoted 0–60 for the 2022 B5 AWD is 6.5 s (6.6 s FWD) — adequate for the class rather than quick; the B6 and T8 are markedly faster.
The 48V ISG smooths stop-start and fills low-rpm response so the B5 is pleasant around town, but the 2.0L four sounds buzzy and strained when worked hard compared with rivals' smoother sixes. The T8's engine-on transitions are generally well masked.
Every 2022 XC60 uses an 8-speed automatic that shifts smoothly once rolling and rarely hunts, but reviewers note a hesitant step-off and lazy kickdowns. Calm and competent rather than crisp.
Volvo rates the second-generation XC60 at 3,500 lbs across B5, B6 and T8 — below the 4,400 lbs of the Audi Q5 and BMW X3.
AWD is optional on the B5 (FWD standard on lower trims) and standard on B6 and T8, so it is widely available but not universal. The system is an on-demand clutch setup (electric rear axle on the T8) with no low range or torque vectoring.
About 8.5 in of ground clearance, an Off Road drive mode and hill descent control on AWD models handle gravel, snow and dirt roads, but there is no low range, locker, skid plating or off-road trim — light-duty only.
Four distinct 2022 offerings: B5 mild hybrid (FWD or AWD), the supercharged/turbocharged B6 mild hybrid, and the T8 Recharge plug-in hybrid in standard and mid-year Extended Range form (larger 18.8 kWh pack). All electrified, though no six-cylinder or full EV.
2Efficiency & RangeThe XC60's lowest-graded category.0.73F
The volume 2022 B5 AWD is EPA-rated 24 MPG combined — mid-pack to slightly below for a compact luxury SUV with a mild-hybrid turbo four; the FWD B5 manages 26.
22 MPG city — the 48V mild-hybrid system helps restarts and coasting but delivers none of a full hybrid's stop-and-go gains.
28 MPG highway is in line with turbo-four luxury rivals, two MPG short of the FWD B5.
EPA does not publish a total range for gas models; 24 MPG combined across the XC60's 18.8-gallon (71 L) tank yields about 450 miles.
EPA's current annual estimate for the B5 AWD is $3,400, driven by the 24 MPG rating and the premium-fuel requirement — high for a compact SUV.
EPA lists premium gasoline for every 2022 XC60 gas powertrain (B5, B5 AWD, B6 AWD), adding cost at every fill-up with no regular-fuel option.
3SafetyThe XC60's best-graded category.3.32B+
NHTSA gave the 2022 XC60 B5 AWD a 5-star overall rating, with 5 stars for frontal crash, 5 for side crash and 5 for side pole, plus 4 stars for rollover.
The 2022 XC60 earned an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ under the 2022 criteria. It scored Good in both small-overlap tests, the original moderate-overlap test, the original side test, roof strength and head restraints. The only blemish is an Acceptable in the newer, tougher side test. IIHS ran that test on a 2023 car and applies the result back to this generation.
Every trim comes standard with City Safety automatic emergency braking, Lane Keeping Aid, BLIS blind-spot monitoring with steer assist, cross-traffic alert and Oncoming Lane Mitigation. In the US, adaptive cruise with Pilot Assist and the 360-degree camera were part of the roughly $2,500 Advanced Package on the volume Momentum trim. That leaves a key item trim-gated.
The standard City Safety system earned IIHS's top ratings: Superior for vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention and Superior for daytime pedestrian detection. It also earned Advanced for nighttime pedestrian detection.
BLIS with Steer Assist is standard on every trim, so the system can steer the car back from an unsafe lane change, not just warn. Cross Traffic Alert with brake support is also standard. The car has no safe-exit warning for rear passengers.
Lane Keeping Aid and Oncoming Lane Mitigation are standard. True lane centering needs Pilot Assist, which is an option package on the US Momentum trim. Reviewers call Pilot Assist's centering competent but sometimes prone to wandering.
Where it is fitted, Pilot Assist adds full-speed stop-and-go adaptive cruise and steering support, and it is well integrated. On the US volume trim it requires the Advanced Package.
No 2022 XC60 offers hands-free driving. Pilot Assist is a hands-on system that requires the driver to keep steering.
IIHS rates the LED headlights Acceptable. They have curve-adaptive beams and high-beam assist, but no configuration earns a Good rating.
The second-generation XC60 has an upright glasshouse and a reasonable beltline, but thick rear pillars restrict the view over the driver's shoulder. A rear camera and parking sensors are standard. The 360-degree camera is part of an option package on the US volume trim.
IIHS rates LATCH ease of use Acceptable. Complete LATCH hardware is in the two outboard rear seats, and the center seat has a tether anchor only. Rear-door openings and rear-seat room are decent for the class.
4Space & ComfortOne of the XC60's weakest categories.1.29D
The 2022 XC60 is a two-row, five-seat compact luxury SUV in Momentum, R-Design and Inscription trim with B5, B6 or T8 power. No third row is offered.
The facelift did not change the SPA body, so Volvo's published 39.7 in no-roof figure applies. The panoramic moonroof is standard on the 2022 Momentum, so most cars have the 38.0 in figure.
Front legroom is adequate rather than generous, and it is unchanged across the second generation.
Second-row headroom is mid-pack for the compact luxury class.
This is a real strength. 38.0 in of rear legroom is near the top of the compact luxury class and well clear of the X3 and GLC at about 36.4 in.
No 2022 XC60 has a third row, and seven-seat buyers are steered to the XC90. The item requires two-row SUVs to be scored in the low band.
The cargo hold is small even for a compact luxury SUV and sits at the floor of the SUV band. The X3 offers about 28.7 cu ft behind its rear seat.
Seats-folded volume is competitive with the class, helped by a flat load floor.
Everyday storage is competitive, with door pockets, a covered console, a standard wireless charging pad, a grocery-bag holder and underfloor space in the cargo area. Nothing stands out, and the small cargo hold limits it.
Volvo's front seats are a long-standing benchmark for long-distance support, and the rear bench is roomier than most rivals'. The volume Momentum has 10-way power front seats, and ventilated seats are reserved for the Inscription.
The ride is composed but firmer than rivals such as the Q5 and NX. The volume Momentum's standard 18-in wheels take some of the edge off compared with the larger R-Design rims. Air suspension is an option only on upper trims.
The cabin is quiet at a cruise, and the mild-hybrid stop/start is nearly imperceptible. The four-cylinder sounds unpolished when revved, though, which keeps this out of the top band.
Dual-zone climate and remote preconditioning are standard. Four-zone climate comes on R-Design and Inscription, and a heated wheel and heated rear seats come in the Climate package. Ventilated seats are Inscription-only, so the volume Momentum buyer has to option up.
5Cost of OwnershipGrades below the middle of the scale.1.52D
MY2022 is the XC60's facelift year and the first with the B5 mild-hybrid engine replacing the T5; the entry B5 Momentum front-drive opened at $42,650 before destination, with AWD a $2,300 option.
The B5 Momentum with AWD is taken as the representative volume configuration — most US XC60s are AWD, and the Momentum is the common entry to the B5 range — before option packages that typically add a few thousand dollars.
CarEdge projects XC60 maintenance and repairs below the luxury-SUV average while Edmunds' True Cost to Own runs higher for this generation, so a blended figure lands mid-pack; complimentary scheduled maintenance covers the first three services.
The 2022 XC60 has lost roughly 37% in three years per KBB, and CarEdge projects about 51% depreciation over five years, putting five-year retention in the high 40s — average-to-weak for a luxury compact SUV.
Volvo's New Vehicle Limited Warranty runs 4 years or 50,000 miles, the German luxury norm and a year longer than mainstream brands.
Volvo offers no separate, longer powertrain warranty in the US; the engine and drivetrain are covered only for the concurrent 4 yr/50,000 mi term, below Genesis, Lexus and Acura.
MY2022 XC60s fall under Volvo's Complimentary Factory Scheduled Maintenance of 3 years / 36,000 miles (three services), matching Audi and BMW, plus 4 years of unlimited-mileage roadside assistance and a trial of Google built-in services and Volvo On Call.
$46,045 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (47% retained, or about $21,641) leaves about $24,404 in depreciation. Add the projected $5,500 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $29,904 in total.
6Reliability & QualityMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.99C-
Consumer Reports rates the 2022 XC60 in its gas (B5/B6 mild-hybrid) form as more reliable than the average 2022 car, while the T8 plug-in is rated below average; owner trouble spots center on in-car electronics (screen freezes, monthly reboots, connectivity drop-outs) rather than mechanical failures, keeping it out of the top tier.
Around 2022 Volvo sat below the industry average in J.D. Power's dependability study and near the bottom of initial-quality rankings as its new Google-based infotainment rolled out, with Consumer Reports placing the brand mid-to-lower pack — a lower-third brand standing.
The 2022 XC60 carries a typical-to-slightly-busy recall load (CR counts 7 NHTSA recalls), mostly software fixes; the gas model's notable campaigns are the steering-gear stray-screw inspection, the child-seat belt retractor and the large rearview-camera recall that needed a second remedy, while the serious HV-battery short-circuit recall applies only to the T8 PHEV.
2022 is the first US model year of the B5 48V mild-hybrid (replacing the T5), built on Volvo's long-running 2.0L VEA turbo four and the Aisin eight-speed automatic — a mature family without a systemic high-mileage failure pattern, though the ISG mild-hybrid layer was brand-new in the US and owners report occasional transmission and oil-consumption complaints.
The second-generation XC60's Scandinavian cabin — wood inlays, fine leather, knurled switchgear and (on higher trims) Orrefors crystal shifter — remains among the most praised in the compact luxury class versus the GLC, X3 and Q5, with only a few hard plastics in low-touch areas.
Physical assembly is tight and rattle-free in reviews and owner feedback, but the brand's initial-quality results in this period were poor, driven largely by electronics glitches rather than panel or trim defects.
Volvo's US retailer footprint is adequate in metro areas but thin nationally relative to the German luxury brands, leaving rural owners with long drives; 2022 ownership coverage was generous with three years of complimentary scheduled maintenance.
Repair frequency and spend are about average to slightly better for the luxury compact class, but parts are largely dealer-channel and European-sourced with a thinner independent aftermarket than Japanese or domestic rivals.
7Technology & InfotainmentOne of the XC60's strongest categories.2.72B-
Every 2022 XC60 uses the same 9-inch portrait center display, which is small for the compact luxury class.
The Google built-in (Android Automotive) system, new for 2022, is a big step forward from Sensus and has excellent Google apps. At launch it delivered less than promised, and the small portrait screen buries climate and vehicle settings in touch menus.
The 2022 XC60 launched with no Apple CarPlay. Wired CarPlay arrived by OTA in August 2022, and Android Auto was not offered until a December 2024 update, with Google built-in standing in for it. Neither has ever been wireless.
Google built-in provides native Google Maps with live traffic, a natural-language Google Assistant and Google Play apps on every trim. This is the reference in-car voice and maps setup.
The Bowers & Wilkins option on upper trims is among the best factory systems sold, and the 14-speaker Harman Kardon is standard on R-Design. The volume Momentum gets a respectable 10-speaker system.
A 12.3-inch fully digital driver display is standard and shows Google Maps directly. It offers only a few fixed layouts.
Volvo pushes whole-vehicle OTA updates that add features to the 2022 XC60: CarPlay in 2022, Android Auto in late 2024 and a new infotainment UI in 2025.
The Volvo Cars app covers remote start and preconditioning, lock/unlock, locate and status, all included with Digital Services. The SPA XC60 has no phone-as-key, and owners report slow wake-ups.
Wireless charging is standard and USB-C ports serve both rows. There is no household AC outlet, only 12V sockets.
Push-button start, a power tailgate and app-based remote start are standard. Full proximity entry and the hands-free tailgate cost extra on the Momentum, and there is no phone-as-key.
A rear camera and rear sensors are standard. Front sensors come on R-Design. The 360-degree surround camera is part of the Advanced Package on the volume Momentum, so many cars have it, but it is not standard.
A full-color windshield HUD is available on the volume Momentum through the Advanced Package, and it is not confined to the top trim. It is still an option, not standard.
8Use-Case FitOne of the XC60's strongest categories.2.68C+
This is a strong family box, with 38 in of rear legroom, wide rear doors, a fold-flat rear seat and optional integrated booster cushions. It is held back by an Acceptable LATCH rating and a small 22.4 cu ft cargo hold for strollers.
The XC60 has NHTSA five stars overall and a 2022 IIHS Top Safety Pick+, with City Safety autobrake, BLIS with steer assist and cross-traffic alert standard. Pilot Assist adaptive cruise and the 360 camera need the Advanced Package on the volume Momentum.
Excellent seats front and rear and about 450 miles of range make it a fine four-person tourer. The firm ride, small cargo hold, dual-zone climate on the volume Momentum and lack of rear entertainment hold it back.
Light steering, good sightlines, great seats and seamless mild-hybrid stop/start make it easy to live with. It loses points for a firm ride, a hesitant step-off, climate controls buried in the 9-in touchscreen and adaptive cruise that costs extra on the Momentum.
The volume B5 AWD returns 24 MPG combined on premium fuel, which the EPA puts at about $3,400 a year, and luxury tires and service add to that. The T8 Recharge's electric range would cover most commutes, but it is the costly option.
A 37.4 ft turning diameter, compact footprint and upright glass make it easy to place. The 360 camera and front sensors are package or upper-trim items on the volume Momentum.
It is light-duty only. The 3,500 lb tow rating on every powertrain handles a small trailer but trails the Q5 and X3, and payload is modest.
The SPA platform and 2.0L four are well proven, but the B5 mild-hybrid was new for 2022, and this is a luxury cabin with dealer-priced parts and no fleet variant.
It has the basics only: 12V sockets, roof rails, a power tailgate and an accessory tow bar. There is no AC inverter and no commercial upfit support.
Class-best seats, a quiet cabin and about 450 miles between fill-ups make it a strong highway car. The firm ride, coarse engine under load and Pilot Assist being an option on the Momentum keep it out of the top tier.
AWD (standard on B6 and T8, optional on B5), about 8.5 in of clearance, Off Road mode with hill descent and roof rails make it a capable ski-and-gravel car. It has no low range or skid plates.
A flat floor and folding rear seat open up 63.3 cu ft, and roof rails, a power tailgate and a tow-bar option help with bulky gear. The 22.4 cu ft behind the rear seats is small.
9Driving ExperienceMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.65C+
Handling is sharp, direct and secure, but testers rate it less rewarding than the Q5 and X3, and the vague steering limits how sporty it feels.
The steering is accurate and quick but numb, and one reviewer found it not quite precise enough to feel sporty. That puts it in the precise-but-numb mid band.
The pedal is firm and easy to modulate, and panic stops are competitively short. No instrumented 2022 B5 70-0 figure is published.
The new 247-hp B5 mild hybrid is adequately quick, at about 6.5 s to 60 in AWD form, and its 48V starter-generator makes stop/start nearly seamless. Tip-in from rest is hesitant and kickdowns are lazy.
The powertrain is quiet at a cruise, but the 2.0L four sounds unpolished when revved and is coarser than the sixes several rivals offer.
Mid-pack for a compact luxury SUV. The second-generation steering geometry was not changed by the 2022 facelift.
Excellent seats with wide adjustment and an upright, airy view make it a good place to sit. Climate and many vehicle functions live in the small 9-in portrait touchscreen, though.
It is calm rather than playful. Motor1 summed up the B5 as 'Mild Not Wild', and the numb steering and ordinary four-cylinder leave little to enjoy on a back road.
10Value & Market PositionMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.59C+
The facelifted 2022 Momentum brings the new B5 mild hybrid, Google built-in infotainment on a 9-inch portrait screen, a 12.3-inch digital cluster, panoramic moonroof and Volvo's City Safety/Pilot Assist suite as standard — competitive for a luxury compact. AWD is a $2,300 option on the B5, and head-up display, surround camera, ventilated seats and Bowers & Wilkins audio are reserved for packages or higher trims.
At ~$44,000–$53,500 for B5 versions the XC60 is priced in line with the BMW X3 and Audi Q5 and delivers a premium cabin and strong safety tech, but the 247-hp B5 is down on power versus rivals and the step to the B6, T8 and Polestar Engineered versions is steep. Fair value rather than a bargain.
Three grades (Momentum/R-Design/Inscription) across four powertrain steps — B5 FWD or AWD, B6 AWD, T8 Recharge plug-in (including a value-oriented Inscription Expression) and the T8 Polestar Engineered — spanning roughly $43,700 to $70,600. Unusually broad for the segment.
The XC60 remained Volvo's best seller in 2022, though US volume dipped in a supply-constrained year for the brand before rebounding strongly in 2023; it sits steadily mid-pack behind the Lexus RX/NX, BMW X3 and Audi Q5.
Volvo carries a genuine safety halo and well-regarded Scandinavian design, but sits a rung below the German brands in aspirational image, and middling reliability perceptions temper the badge.
MY2022 sold at the height of the chip shortage, when luxury SUVs commonly transacted at or above MSRP and Volvo's support was limited to lease programs and loyalty offers; few meaningful discounts were available to buyers.
MY2022 is the mid-cycle facelift of the second generation (launched MY2018 on SPA), bringing Google built-in infotainment, revised styling and the B5/B6 mild-hybrid engines — freshly updated, with no redesign imminent.
Praised for comfort, design and safety and an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ for 2022, but rated mid-pack in class rankings and rarely a comparison-test winner against the BMW X3, Genesis GV70 or Porsche Macan; the generation's 2018 World Car of the Year adds pedigree.
