The verdict
A mixed-report full-size luxury suv, strong on technology and held back by ownership.
The 2019 X7 was BMW's first full-size three-row SUV. It pairs a silky 335-hp turbo six with a plush air-suspension ride, a hushed, richly trimmed cabin and a 7,500-lb tow rating. The catch is cost. It started at $74,895 and typically sold for about $84,500, kept only about 39% of that after five years, and burns premium fuel at 22 MPG. As a launch-year model it also carries eleven recalls, and it was never crash-tested by NHTSA or IIHS. Bought used with its recall work done and a warranty plan, it is a superb long-distance luxury hauler. Bought new, it was one of the most expensive SUVs in the class to own.

Detailed scoring by subject
1Performance & PowertrainMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.53C+
2019 is the X7's launch model year (on sale March 2019, pre-facelift, no 48V mild hybrid). The volume xDrive40i uses the 3.0L B58 turbo six; the only other 2019 trim is the twin-turbo V8 xDrive50i, and the M50i doesn't arrive until 2020.
The xDrive40i's 330 lb-ft is adequate for a 5,400-lb-plus three-row SUV. The V8 xDrive50i adds a lot more.
BMW quotes 5.8 s for the xDrive40i, which is quick for a full-size three-row SUV.
The B58 turbo inline-six is famously smooth, with very little turbo lag. Without the later 48V system, its auto stop/start is a bit less seamless than on the 2023-on cars.
The ZF 8HP 8-speed automatic shifts almost imperceptibly, kicks down quickly and is well calibrated in Sport mode.
Both 2019 trims are rated to tow 7,500 lbs with the factory hitch, near the top of the luxury SUV class.
xDrive AWD is standard on both 2019 trims, with standard two-axle air suspension and optional off-road drive modes. There is no low range.
This is a road-biased luxury flagship. It has 8.7 in of ground clearance, the air suspension can add up to 1.6 in, and an Off-Road Package adds terrain modes. There is no low range, no locking differentials and no dedicated off-road trim.
There are only two gas powertrains for 2019: the 335-hp six and the 456-hp V8. The M50i arrives for 2020, and there is no hybrid, PHEV or EV variant.
2Efficiency & RangeOne of the X7's weakest categories.0.45F
EPA rates the 3.0L xDrive40i at 22 MPG combined, which is typical for a large three-row luxury SUV. The V8 xDrive50i drops to 17 MPG.
EPA-rated 20 MPG city for the volume six-cylinder trim.
EPA-rated 25 MPG highway, which is adequate for a heavy AWD three-row.
A 21.9-gallon tank at 22 MPG combined gives about 480 miles, a solid touring range.
Premium fuel at 22 MPG pushes EPA's annual cost estimate above the top of the SUV band. The V8 is rated at $4,850.
Both 2019 X7 trims call for premium unleaded, and there is no plug-in option to offset fuel costs.
3SafetyOne of the X7's weakest categories.2.03C
NHTSA never published an overall 5-Star Safety Rating for the 2019 X7, the launch year of the G07 generation. Low-volume luxury SUVs are often left out of NCAP testing.
IIHS never crash-tested the 2019 X7, so it has no award and no verified crashworthiness results. It shares the CLAR platform with the Good-rated X5, which suggests a sound structure, but without a test it stays mid-band.
Active Driving Assistant is standard on the volume xDrive40i. It covers frontal collision warning with AEB and pedestrian protection, lane departure warning, blind-spot detection, rear-collision warning, rear cross-traffic alert and speed-limit info. Adaptive cruise and lane centering need the optional Driving Assistance Professional package, which keeps the score below 80.
Standard AEB is BMW's City Collision Mitigation with daytime pedestrian protection, using the same camera and radar hardware as the X5. IIHS never rated the X7's front crash prevention, and BMW does not claim nighttime pedestrian detection.
Active Blind Spot Detection, which warns by vibrating the steering wheel, and rear cross-traffic alert are standard. Active lane-change collision avoidance, front cross-traffic alert and the evasion aid come only with the optional Driving Assistance Professional package.
Lane departure warning is standard. The optional Steering and Lane Control Assistant centers smoothly on highways with occasional corrections, but it is not standard equipment.
The optional Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go, part of Driving Assistance Professional, works across the full speed range with automatic resume and pairs well with lane centering. It is a package option, not standard.
Driving Assistance Professional includes what Edmunds calls a low-level automated driving system. BMW's Extended Traffic Jam Assistant allows hands-free driving only below about 37 mph on limited-access highways, watched by a driver-monitoring camera, and it reached US cars during 2019, so not every early-build MY2019 X7 had it. The capability is far narrower than Super Cruise.
The 2019 X7 has standard adaptive LED headlights with automatic high beams, with BMW Laserlight optional. IIHS never rated them, so this score is inferred from BMW's adaptive-LED results on related models.
The high seating position and tall glass give commanding forward and side views. Thick D-pillars and the long body leave rear-quarter blind zones, partly offset by the standard rearview camera and parking sensors. Surround view comes with the optional Parking Assistance package.
The second-row outboard LATCH anchors are easy to reach, the large rear doors make installation easier, and the roomy three-row cabin (bench or optional captain's chairs) fits several car seats. Lower anchors are only at the outboard positions.
4Space & ComfortOne of the X7's strongest categories.2.79B-
2019 is the X7's launch model year (first generation, on sale March 2019). Three rows for seven are standard, and the optional second-row captain's chairs make it a six-seater.
Front headroom is generous for the segment.
On paper, front legroom is modest for a full-size SUV and falls just below the floor of the SUV band. Reviewers don't report the front feeling cramped.
Second-row headroom is tall.
Second-row legroom is comfortable but trails the Escalade and Navigator.
The power-sliding, power-folding second row eases access, and the third row is power-adjustable with 36.6 in of headroom. But 33.3 in of legroom keeps adults to shorter trips.
Cargo space behind the second row is middling for a three-row full-size luxury SUV, and tight behind the third row.
With every rear seat folded, maximum cargo volume is healthy.
The electrically folding second and third rows, split two-piece tailgate and underfloor bin are practical. The cabin cubbies are conventional, and heated/cooled cupholders come only with the Premium Package.
The standard power, heated front seats are supportive, and the second row is roomy and comfortable. Ventilation and massage are optional rather than standard.
The standard two-axle air suspension with adaptive dampers gives a plush yet controlled ride, and the optional Executive Drive Pro roll stabilization further limits body motion.
Acoustic glazing and heavy insulation make this one of the quieter cabins in the class.
Four-zone climate, heated front seats and the panoramic Sky Lounge roof are standard. Ventilated/massage seats, heated rear seats and steering wheel and five-zone climate are options on the volume trim.
5Cost of OwnershipThe X7's lowest-graded category.0.00F
In its launch year (on sale from March 2019) the X7 came in two trims. The entry xDrive40i listed at $73,900 plus BMW's $995 destination charge; the M50i did not arrive until model year 2020.
The xDrive40i was the volume trim. BMW's options are package-heavy, so a typical launch-year dealer build with the Premium Package, the Luxury Seating Package and metallic paint landed in the mid-$80,000s.
The X7 is one of BMW's costliest vehicles to service: large tires and brakes, two-axle air suspension and a B58/N63 engine bay. Complimentary maintenance blunts the early years, but the estimate still sits near the top of the luxury-SUV range. First-year launch models also drew more early warranty work.
The 2019 X7 is now seven years old, so its five-year figure is observed rather than projected. As a first-year launch model it sits slightly below the later pre-facelift years, at roughly 37–44% retained depending on the source.
BMW's New Vehicle Limited Warranty on 2019 models runs 4 years or 50,000 miles. That is level with Mercedes-Benz and Audi, and a year longer than mainstream brands.
BMW gives 2019 models no extended powertrain coverage: the engine, transmission and xDrive expire with the 4-year/50,000-mile basic warranty. That is short of the 6-year/70,000-mile powertrain terms on the Lincoln Navigator and Infiniti QX80.
BMW Ultimate Care covers scheduled maintenance for 3 years/36,000 miles, and roadside assistance runs the full 4 years with unlimited mileage. That is genuine multi-year coverage, but the plan is narrow and non-transferable, and in 2019 Apple CarPlay still carried a subscription fee after the trial.
$84,500 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (39% retained, or about $32,955) leaves about $51,545 in depreciation. Add the projected $8,200 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $59,745 in total.
6Reliability & QualityMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.30C+
2019 is the X7's launch model year (at dealers from March 2019), so it carries first-year-build risk. Consumer Reports published no reliability verdict for it, and J.D. Power rated the near-identical 2020 car only average. Launch-year assembly faults that were later fixed by recall put it at the bottom of the average band.
Around 2019 BMW sat in the upper-middle of the dependability studies, ahead of Mercedes-Benz and Land Rover but behind Lexus, Porsche and Toyota.
Eleven NHTSA campaigns cover the 2019 X7, the heaviest recall load of any X7 year, and several are serious. They include a fire risk from a high-pressure fuel pump leak (xDrive50i), wheel bolts that may loosen, misaligned head airbags, loss of brake power assist and two starter-overheating campaigns. That is a major, repeated launch-year record.
The volume xDrive40i uses the B58 3.0L turbo inline-six (no mild hybrid; that came with the 2023 facelift) with the ZF 8HP automatic. Both have strong high-mileage reputations. The xDrive50i's N63 V8 is known for oil consumption and drew a fuel-pump recall, but it is not the volume trim.
As BMW's flagship SUV, the X7 gets the brand's richest cabin: Vernasca leather standard, Merino optional, open-pore wood, an optional glass shifter and the Sky Lounge roof. It matches the Mercedes GLS.
Built at Spartanburg, with a solid structure and tight panel gaps in reviews. Several launch-year installation faults were later fixed by recall: misaligned head airbags, under-torqued wheel bolts and seat-adapter bolts, and improperly installed third-row seat springs. Those put it below later model years.
About 345 US BMW centers give dense metro coverage and thinner rural coverage. Service satisfaction is around the luxury average, and the car came with BMW Ultimate Care maintenance for 3 years/36k miles.
Parts are easy to get through dealers and the German-car aftermarket. Repairs out of warranty are expensive: two-axle air suspension, the panoramic Sky Lounge roof, 21–22-inch tires and complex electronics. A 2019 car is now well out of warranty.
7Technology & InfotainmentThe X7's best-graded category.3.09B
The launch-year 2019 X7 uses a 12.3-in iDrive 7 central touchscreen. The 14.9-in Curved Display arrived only with the 2022 facelift (2023 MY).
iDrive 7 (BMW Operating System 7) is quick and crisp, and it keeps the rotary controller, touch, voice and gesture inputs plus physical climate buttons. Reviewers found its menus deep and its customization overwhelming at first.
Wireless Apple CarPlay is standard, and BMW dropped its CarPlay subscription in late 2019. Android Auto was not available at all when the 2019 X7 was sold; it arrived for OS7 cars only from mid-2020.
The X7 launched the 'Hey BMW' Intelligent Personal Assistant, which understands natural speech and controls many functions, and native navigation is standard.
The volume xDrive40i's standard 10-speaker, 205-W system is merely decent. Harman Kardon surround comes in the commonly fitted Premium Package, and a 20-speaker, 1,500-W Bowers & Wilkins Diamond system is optional.
A configurable 12.3-in fully digital cluster is standard. Some reviewers find its reverse-sweep tachometer less legible than conventional gauges.
BMW advertised Remote Software Upgrade for the OS7-based X7, but the US rollout only began in 2020. Scope was mostly infotainment, maps and some feature adds rather than whole-vehicle updates.
The BMW Connected app covers lock, locate, climate and vehicle status. Remote engine start requires the Premium Package, and Digital Key was not offered on US 2019 X7s.
Six USB ports, including USB-C, are spread across the rows, and a Wi-Fi hotspot is standard. Wireless charging is fitted, and there is no household AC outlet.
Comfort Access keyless entry and a hands-free split tailgate are fitted, and remote start is available with the Premium Package. Phone-as-key was not available on US 2019 cars.
Front and rear Park Distance Control and a rearview camera are standard. Parking Assistant Plus adds Surround View with 3D View and the Back-Up Assistant, which retraces the last 50 m. It is standard on the xDrive50i and optional on the 40i.
A large full-color HUD is standard on the V8 xDrive50i and part of the roughly $3,000 Premium Package on the volume xDrive40i.
8Use-Case FitMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.37C+
Big rear doors, a power-sliding, folding second row and LATCH anchors make kid duty easy. With every seat in use, the 12.8 cu ft behind the third row is tight for a stroller.
Active Driving Assistant (frontal collision warning with pedestrian detection and city braking, blind-spot, lane-departure and rear cross-traffic alerts) is standard. Driving Assistant Professional with adaptive cruise and lane keeping is optional. The X7 was not crash-tested by NHTSA or IIHS for 2019.
Plush air ride, a quiet cabin, four-zone climate and the Sky Lounge panoramic roof make long trips easy. Luggage space with all seats occupied is limited, and rear entertainment is optional.
The smooth six and calm ride make it relaxing to drive, but its bulk shows in traffic. Without the 48V mild hybrid that came with the facelift, auto stop/start is less seamless.
About 22 mpg combined on premium fuel, plus expensive 21-in run-flat tires, make it a costly commuter.
At about 203 in long with a 42.8-ft turning circle, it is a big vehicle to park. Standard front and rear sensors, optional surround view and the Back-Up Assistant make it manageable.
A 7,500-lb tow rating, 330 lb-ft and self-leveling air suspension handle trailers well, but this is a luxury hauler, not a work vehicle.
Full leather trim, air suspension and 21-in wheels on run-flats are ill-suited to hard work.
A factory trailer hitch and load-leveling air suspension help with towing, but there is no onboard AC power or work-oriented upfit ecosystem.
The superb ride and quiet cabin make it a strong tourer, and the 21.9-gal tank gives roughly 480 miles of range. Adaptive cruise with lane centering is an option, not standard.
Standard xDrive AWD, air suspension that can raise the body 1.6 in, a 7,500-lb tow rating and an optional Off-Road Package help. Run-flat road tires and no low range limit it.
Power-folding rows open up 90.4 cu ft, and the split tailgate and roof rails add flexibility. Room behind the third row is limited.
9Driving ExperienceOne of the X7's strongest categories.2.80B-
It is composed and controlled for its size, and the optional Executive Drive Pro roll stabilization and Integral Active Steering sharpen it. Its 5,400-lb mass is always evident.
Steering is accurate and predictably weighted but offers little feedback.
Stops are strong and consistent for a heavy three-row SUV, with a firm, progressive pedal.
The B58 turbo six and ZF 8-speed are smooth and responsive. Without the later 48V mild hybrid, stop/start restarts are slightly less seamless.
The inline-six is hushed at cruise and sounds refined when worked.
The turning diameter is large and sits beyond the ceiling of the SUV band.
The driving position is commanding and highly adjustable, and physical climate buttons plus the iDrive controller keep the layout logical.
It is quick (5.8 s to 60 mph) and polished, but the xDrive40i is more limousine than sports SUV. For 2019, the 5.2-s V8 xDrive50i is the faster choice.
10Value & Market PositionMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.65C+
The base xDrive40i comes well equipped: two-axle air suspension, a 335-hp turbo six, xDrive, Live Cockpit Professional dual 12.3-inch screens, Vernasca leather, a panoramic roof and three rows. However, ventilated seats, the Driving Assistance Professional suite and heated rear seats sit in costly packages, as is typical for BMW.
At about $75,000 the X7 undercut the outgoing Mercedes GLS and the Range Rover while offering strong refinement and performance. It still cost more than the Lincoln Navigator and Infiniti QX80 for less cargo space, and its option prices are high, so it is fair value rather than a bargain.
In its launch year the X7 had only two trims, the xDrive40i six and the xDrive50i V8, both with 6- or 7-seat layouts and extensive package and individual-option choices. The performance M50i did not join until 2020, and there was no low-cost entry point.
2019 was a partial launch year, with deliveries starting in March. Demand was strong and the X7 quickly became a meaningful contributor among $75,000+ three-row luxury SUVs, but its first-year volume trailed the established Escalade and Navigator.
BMW is an aspirational premium brand, and the X7 is its new flagship SUV. The very large kidney grille divided opinion, but the badge carries strong prestige in the segment.
As a brand-new, in-demand launch model, the 2019 X7 sold close to MSRP for most of the year, with only BMW's standard loyalty/conquest offers and lease programs. Its weak residuals also limited lease attractiveness.
2019 is the debut model year of an all-new nameplate on BMW's then-current CLAR platform. The LCI facelift did not arrive until mid-2022, so 2019 buyers got a brand-new design with years before any replacement.
Reviewers praised the X7's ride, powertrains and cabin quality, and Car and Driver picked it over the new Mercedes GLS in a head-to-head test. In a wider four-way three-row luxury test the Lincoln Navigator won, so it was well reviewed but not a consistent class winner.
