The verdict

A capable full-size luxury suv, strong on technology and held back by ownership.

The 2025 BMW X7 is a refined, high-tech three-row cruiser. Its 375-hp mild-hybrid inline-six is silky, the standard air suspension and quiet cabin make long trips easy, and it can tow 7,500 lbs. The catch is cost: a typical build lands near $93,000, it loses roughly 60% of its value in five years, it needs premium fuel at 22 MPG, and neither IIHS nor NHTSA has crash-tested it. Buy it for the drive and the cabin, not for value or a third row that suits adults.

The volume 2025 xDrive40i uses the 3.0L turbo inline-six with 48V mild-hybrid assist (all X7s mild-hybrid since the 2023 LCI); the M60i's 4.4L twin-turbo V8 and the Alpina XB7 top the range.

The B58 six delivers 398 lb-ft from low rpm; V8 variants step well beyond 550 lb-ft.

65/100
#6 of 10 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

BMW quotes 5.6 s for the xDrive40i; instrumented tests commonly run quicker (low 5s), so the factory figure is conservative.

Powertrain refinement91
#4 of 10 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The B58 inline-six with 48V mild-hybrid is consistently praised as among the smoothest, most responsive engines in the class, with minimal turbo lag and seamless stop/start.

Transmission behavior90
#5 of 10 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

ZF 8-speed automatic shifts almost imperceptibly in comfort mode and kicks down decisively; a segment benchmark.

Max towing capacity

93/100
#7 of 10 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Every 2025 X7 trim is rated to tow 7,500 lbs with the factory hitch — near the top of the luxury three-row SUV set.

AWD/4WD availability86
#5 of 10 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

xDrive rear-biased AWD is standard on every 2025 X7, with an electronically controlled clutch pack and selectable drive modes; no low range.

Off-road capability34
#10 of 10 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Standard two-axle air suspension can raise ride height, but there is no low range, no lockers and no off-road trim (the earlier Off-Road package is not offered in the US); a pavement-oriented luxury hauler.

Powertrain lineup breadth46
#5 of 10 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Three gas powertrains for 2025 — turbo I6 (xDrive40i), twin-turbo V8 (M60i) and the high-output Alpina XB7 V8 — all 48V mild hybrids, with no PHEV or EV variant.

2Efficiency & RangeOne of the X7's weakest categories.0.38F
3SafetyOne of the X7's weakest categories.1.87C-
NHTSA overall rating
Not rated by NHTSA
0/100
#8 of 10 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

NHTSA has no 2025 X7 entry, and it never rated the latest tested year of this generation either (2024: overall, frontal, side and rollover all Not Rated). The framework's 0 = never rated therefore applies.

IIHS awards & crashworthiness45
#9 of 10 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

IIHS has never crash-tested the X7, so the 2025 model has no Top Safety Pick award and no published crashworthiness results. It sits at the bottom of the untested band rather than lower because there are no known structural concerns, and the CLAR-platform X5 it shares underpinnings with has tested well.

Standard ADAS suite breadth72
#10 of 10 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Active Driving Assistant is standard on every 2025 X7: frontal collision warning with city-braking AEB, Lane Keeping Assistant, Active Blind Spot Detection, rear cross-traffic alert and High Beam Assistant. Adaptive cruise with Stop&Go and lane centering are still in the optional Driving Assistance Professional package, which holds this below the 80+ band.

Automatic emergency braking performance65
#9 of 10 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

AEB with pedestrian and cyclist detection is standard. IIHS has published no front-crash-prevention rating for the X7, so performance is inferred from the camera/radar stack BMW shares with rated siblings, and docked for the lack of any X7-specific result.

Blind-spot & cross-traffic coverage80
#6 of 10 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Active Blind Spot Detection is standard and steers the vehicle back if you start a lane change into an occupied lane; rear cross-traffic alert is also standard. Front cross-traffic alert and lane-change and side-collision avoidance require the optional Driving Assistance Professional package.

Lane keeping & centering77
#7 of 10 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Lane Keeping Assistant is standard. Optional lane centering (Steering & Lane Control Assistant) tracks smoothly on highways, and for 2025 the package adds Active Lane Change with eye activation. IIHS rated BMW's Driving Assistant Pro Good for cooperative steering.

Adaptive cruise & highway assist76
#9 of 10 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Optional Active Cruise Control with Stop&Go is refined in normal driving and pairs with Highway Assistant. The package is not standard, and IIHS rated BMW's system Poor on ACC resume behavior and attention reminders.

Hands-free driving availability71
#4 of 10 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Highway Assistant allows hands-free driving up to 85 mph on controlled-access highways, and for 2025 it gains eye-activated lane changes. It needs the optional package, and its coverage and maturity still trail Super Cruise.

Headlight performance75
#4 of 10 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The post-facelift split Adaptive LED headlights with cornering lights and automatic high beams (High Beam Assistant) are standard. IIHS has never rated the X7's headlights, so this score is inferred from the hardware.

Outward visibility76
#6 of 10 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

A tall seating position and a large glass area give good forward sightlines. The thick D-pillars and the vehicle's size create rear-quarter blind zones, which the standard rearview camera with Parking Assistant and the available Surround View cameras help offset.

Child-seat (LATCH) usability80
#5 of 10 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Large rear doors and a spacious second row make child seats easy to fit, and the third row suits booster-age kids. The lower anchors sit behind covers and can need some digging, and the available captain's chairs cut the second row to two seats.

#9 of 10 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

BMW's published front legroom is short on paper for a full-size SUV (GLS ~40.3, Escalade 44.5), though the driving position doesn't feel cramped in practice.

Rear headroom
39.9 in (second row); 36.6 in third row
97/100
#5 of 10 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Second-row headroom is excellent for the class, helped by the long, flat roofline.

Rear legroom

63/100
#8 of 10 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Second-row legroom is adequate but not class-leading; the second row slides fore/aft to share space with row three.

Third-row usability66
#6 of 10 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

A real third row with power-folding seats and powered second-row slide for access, but it sits low to the floor with ~33 in of legroom — fine for kids and short adult hops, not for adults on a road trip.

48.6 cu ft behind row 2 (third row folded); 12.8 cu ft behind row 3
43/100
#4 of 10 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Cargo behind the second row is mid-pack for a full-size SUV — well behind body-on-frame rivals like the Escalade.

Max cargo volume
90.4 cu ft (rows 2 and 3 folded)
79/100
#5 of 10 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Strong maximum cargo volume, roughly on par with the GLS but short of the Escalade/Navigator.

In-cabin storage & clever solutions70
#8 of 10 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Conventional but competent storage: large console bin, door pockets, wireless charging tray, and a split tailgate whose lower section folds down as a seat. Heated/cooled cupholders are an Executive Package option; no standout storage innovations.

Seat comfort84
#6 of 10 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Front comfort seats are supportive with wide power adjustment, and front massage is available in the Executive Package; second-row bench and captain's chairs are well cushioned. The low third-row cushion keeps it shy of the very top.

Ride quality85
#5 of 10 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Standard two-axle air suspension filters sharp impacts and stays composed — reviewers call ride quality where the X7 'feels worth its price'. The optional Dynamic Handling package can feel floaty in Comfort mode, and large wheels add some firmness.

Cabin quietness85
#7 of 10 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Acoustic glass and heavy insulation keep wind and road noise low at highway speeds; among the quieter three-row luxury SUVs, if not Range Rover-silent.

Climate & comfort features78
#10 of 10 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Heated front seats, multi-zone climate with rear controls, and a panoramic roof are standard, but ventilated front seats, heated rear seats and 5-zone climate are a $1,600 Climate Comfort Package option, and massage seats are in the Executive Package — thin standard kit for an ~$85k SUV.

5Cost of OwnershipThe X7's lowest-graded category.0.00F
Base MSRP
$85,475 (xDrive40i; $86,675 with $1,200 destination); M60i $113,075; Alpina XB7 $153,575
0/100
#1 of 10 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The 2025 X7 xDrive40i lists at $85,475, about $2,600 more than the 2024 model. That is far above the $65,000 SUV band ceiling, so it scores 0.

Volume-Trim Price
≈$93,000 (xDrive40i with Premium Pkg, Driving Assistance Pro, paint/wheels, destination)
0/100
#1 of 10 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The volume xDrive40i is usually ordered with the Premium Package, Driving Assistance Professional, metallic paint and a wheel upgrade. Together with destination, a typical build comes to about $93,000, well above the $68,000 band ceiling.

5-Year Maintenance & Repair Cost
≈$7,900 over 5 years ($5,424 maintenance + $2,468 repairs)
25/100
#6 of 10 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

KBB projects $5,424 in maintenance and $2,468 in repairs over five years. That is high for the SUV class, though below the ceiling some estimates give for air-suspended German flagships, since no scheduled maintenance is included.

5-Year Resale Value Retention
≈34–45% of MSRP retained after 5 years (≈40% midpoint)
0/100
#5 of 10 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

KBB projects a $29,099 residual after five years on an $85,475 xDrive40i, about 34% retained. Market depreciation studies put the X7 at roughly 45%. Either way, it is one of the steeper depreciators among SUVs, driven by its high price and heavy lease-return volume.

Basic warranty
4 yr / 50,000 mi
50/100
#1 of 10 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

BMW's New Vehicle Limited Warranty runs 4 years or 50,000 miles. That is standard for German luxury brands and behind Genesis at 5 years / 60,000 miles.

Powertrain warranty
4 yr / 50,000 mi (covered under basic; no separate longer powertrain term)
0/100
#8 of 10 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

BMW has no separate, longer powertrain warranty. The drivetrain is covered only by the 4-year/50,000-mile basic warranty, which is below the 5-year band floor.

Complimentary maintenance & perks35
#10 of 10 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

BMW ended free scheduled maintenance after MY2016, and Ultimate Care+ is a paid plan. The 2025 X7 includes only 4-year/unlimited-mile roadside assistance and a connected-services trial, which is thin for an $85k+ SUV.

Effective 5-Year Ownership Cost
$63,700 (≈$55,800 depreciation + $7,900 maintenance)
0/100
#2 of 10 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

$93,000 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (40% retained, or about $37,200) leaves about $55,800 in depreciation. Add the projected $7,900 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $63,700 in total.

6Reliability & QualityOne of the X7's strongest categories.3.12B
Predicted reliability76
#1 of 10 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

J.D. Power rates the 2025 X7 'Great' at 81/100 for Quality & Reliability, and it won the Large Premium SUV segment of the 2025 Initial Quality Study. Consumer Reports, though, calls its reliability only about average for the model year, so the two sources point in different directions.

Brand reliability track record82
#2 of 10 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

BMW ranks in the upper tier of recent dependability studies. It placed 9th overall in the 2025 J.D. Power VDS and was top-five overall and the top luxury brand in Consumer Reports' 2025 brand reliability rankings. BMW finished below average in the 2025 IQS brand ranking, which holds it short of the very top band.

Recall & TSB history54
#4 of 10 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The 2025 X7 is covered by BMW's repeated integrated-brake-module campaigns, where servomotor welds can break and cause loss of power brake assist and rear braking. It also has a seat-belt occupant-detection recall that can affect airbag deployment. Several safety-critical campaigns hit one model year, though each covers a limited population.

Powertrain durability reputation85
#1 of 10 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The volume xDrive40i uses the B58 3.0L turbo inline-six with 48V mild hybrid and the ZF 8HP automatic. That is BMW's most proven modern pairing, with a strong high-mileage record. The 48V MHEV system, standard on every X7 since the 2023 facelift, is the only newer element.

Interior material quality90
#2 of 10 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

As BMW's flagship SUV, the X7 gets premium leather, real wood and metal trim, crystal controls and the Curved Display. Reviewers rate the cabin among the richest in the full-size luxury segment.

Fit & finish86
#2 of 10 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The 2025 X7 won its segment in J.D. Power's 2025 Initial Quality Study, the most direct measure of assembly and early-ownership quality. Owner complaints center on infotainment and electronics, not panel gaps or rattles.

Dealer & service network78
#3 of 10 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

BMW's roughly 345 US dealers cover metros and most secondary markets well, though rural coverage is thinner than mainstream brands. BMW Ultimate Care (3 yr/36k scheduled maintenance) is included.

Parts availability & repair cost56
#4 of 10 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Shared CLAR/B58 hardware with the X5 keeps parts readily available and aftermarket support decent. The X7's standard two-axle air suspension, large wheels and dense electronics still make out-of-warranty repairs expensive.

7Technology & InfotainmentThe X7's best-graded category.3.78A
Touchscreen size
14.9 in (BMW Curved Display, standard; paired with 12.3-in cluster)
93/100
#5 of 10 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Every post-2023-facelift X7 uses the BMW Curved Display with a 14.9-in central touchscreen.

Infotainment UX & responsiveness74
#8 of 10 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

iDrive 8.5 is fast and graphically sharp, and the rotary controller survives, but reviewers criticize it for burying climate and audio functions in menus and removing useful hard keys.

Wireless CarPlay / Android Auto92
#3 of 10 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard on all 2025 X7 trims.

Voice control & native navigation84
#5 of 10 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant handles natural-language commands, and native BMW Maps offers cloud routing and augmented-view guidance.

Audio system quality90
#5 of 10 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Base system is a 10-speaker Harman Kardon; a 16-speaker Harman Kardon surround and a 20-speaker, 1,500-W Bowers & Wilkins Diamond system are available.

Digital instrument cluster88
#7 of 10 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

A 12.3-in fully digital cluster is standard as part of the Curved Display, crisp and configurable.

OTA update capability82
#5 of 10 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

BMW Remote Software Upgrade on Operating System 8.5 delivers whole-vehicle OTA updates that have added features — among the better legacy-OEM programs.

Companion app & remote functions84
#5 of 10 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

My BMW app covers remote lock, locate, climate and service; BMW Digital Key Plus (UWB) gives phone-as-key on supported phones. Some ConnectedDrive services move to subscriptions after trial periods.

Charging ports & device power82
#7 of 10 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

USB-C ports across rows plus a standard wireless charging tray; no 120V household outlet in the cabin.

Keyless & remote access90
#5 of 10 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Comfort Access keyless entry/start and a hands-free power split tailgate are standard; Digital Key Plus adds phone-as-key and remote engine start is available via the key/app.

Camera & parking aids76
#9 of 10 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Rear camera, front/rear sensors and Parking Assistant with Reversing Assistant are standard, but the Surround View 3D camera and Parking Assistant Professional come in the $900 Parking Assistance Package.

Head-up display availability90
#1 of 10 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

A full-color head-up display is standard on the volume xDrive40i.

8Use-Case FitMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.54C+
Kid & car-seat practicality78
#7 of 10 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Large rear doors, power-sliding/folding second row for third-row access, and LATCH in the second row make it a capable family hauler; the low, tight third row and 12.8 cu ft behind it limit full-load stroller duty.

Family safety package65
#9 of 10 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Standard AEB with pedestrian/cyclist detection and blind-spot monitoring, but the X7 has no IIHS or NHTSA crash ratings, and the full Driving Assistance Professional suite is an option.

Family road-trip comfort84
#6 of 10 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Quiet cabin, standard air suspension, generous second-row headroom and 48.6 cu ft behind row 2 make it an excellent four-to-five-person tourer; heated rear seats and 5-zone climate cost extra and full seven-up luggage space is small.

Daily driving ease76
#6 of 10 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The smooth mild-hybrid six and 8-speed automatic are effortless in traffic and the air suspension soaks up city pavement, but the 203-in, ~5,400-lb body and menu-heavy iDrive 8.5 add friction.

Commuting cost efficiency45
#5 of 10 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Premium fuel at roughly 20-21 mpg combined plus BMW-priced tires and service make it expensive per commuting mile.

Parking & maneuverability52
#6 of 10 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

A 203-in footprint and 43-ft turning circle make tight urban parking a chore; the surround-view camera and Parking Assistant Professional help but are a $900 option.

Work capability66
#6 of 10 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

A 7,500-lb tow rating and 398 lb-ft from the turbo six handle a mid-size boat or camper, but modest payload and no bed make it a family hauler that tows, not a work tool.

Durability for work duty50
#5 of 10 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The B58 six is a well-proven engine, but air suspension, complex electronics and delicate luxury materials are poorly suited to hard work use.

Jobsite & upfit practicality35
#7 of 10 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Cargo tie-downs, roof rails and a hitch are about it — no onboard AC power, no bed and no upfit ecosystem.

Long-distance comfort & range86
#6 of 10 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

A superb highway cruiser — quiet, supple and comfortable with roughly 500+ miles of highway range — held back only by Driving Assistance Professional being optional rather than standard.

Outdoor & adventure capability70
#6 of 10 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Standard xDrive AWD, adjustable-height air suspension and 7,500-lb towing handle gravel roads, snow and toys well; luxury tires and long wheelbase limit real off-road use.

Gear & luggage flexibility80
#5 of 10 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Power-folding rows two and three open 90.4 cu ft, the split tailgate doubles as a bench, and roof rails and a hitch are available.

9Driving ExperienceGrades above the middle of the scale.2.90B-
Handling & agility76
#4 of 10 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The air suspension keeps the big body tidy and 'buttoned down' on winding roads, and it handles better than the Escalade or Grand Wagoneer, but its mass means composure rather than agility.

Steering feel70
#3 of 10 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Precise and well weighted, as usual for BMW's electric steering, but insulated from the road surface.

Braking confidence78
#2 of 10 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Strong, progressive brakes for a 5,400-lb SUV, with stopping distances competitive for the class.

Powertrain smoothness & response90
#3 of 10 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The 375-hp B58 inline-six with 48V mild hybrid and ZF 8-speed is very smooth with seamless stop/start, and quick — Edmunds measured 0-60 mph in 5.1 seconds.

Drivetrain noise & vibration86
#6 of 10 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The inline-six is quiet at cruise and makes a smooth, cultured sound under load with no vibration through the controls.

Turning circle
43 ft curb-to-curb (xDrive40i)
0/100
#9 of 10 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

A wide turning circle for the SUV band, reflecting the long 122-in wheelbase.

Driving position & ergonomics78
#4 of 10 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Commanding, highly adjustable driving position with a standard head-up display, but iDrive 8.5 moves climate and other common controls into touchscreen menus.

Fun-to-drive factor72
#3 of 10 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The volume xDrive40i is quick and composed, but it is a refined cruiser more than an enthusiast's SUV; the M60i and Alpina XB7 bring the drama.

10Value & Market PositionOne of the X7's strongest categories.3.07B
Standard equipment generosity76
#5 of 10 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The xDrive40i comes standard with two-axle air suspension, a panoramic roof, the curved iDrive display, heated front seats, a power-folding third row and wireless CarPlay/Android Auto. Driving Assistant Professional, premium audio and ventilated/massage seats still cost extra.

Feature value per dollar75
#4 of 10 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The xDrive40i undercuts the GLS 450 and sits well below the Range Rover and Lexus LX. For that it delivers a 375-hp mild-hybrid inline-six and standard air suspension, which is fair to good value for a flagship three-row SUV. KBB Fair Price runs about $6,800 under MSRP, which improves the real transaction value.

Trim & configuration breadth74
#6 of 10 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

For 2025 there are three well-spaced trims: xDrive40i ($85.5k), M60i ($113k) and Alpina XB7 ($153.6k), plus Premium/Executive packages, six- or seven-seat layouts and BMW Individual options. There is no RWD, PHEV or diesel.

Sales popularity & market acceptance74
#2 of 10 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

US sales rose 6.6% to 31,575 in 2025, a third straight year of growth late in the generation. That makes the X7 a strong seller near the top of the full-size luxury SUV niche, behind the Escalade family and on par with or ahead of the GLS.

Brand desirability & image88
#3 of 10 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

BMW is one of the most aspirational luxury brands, with a loyal owner base, and the X7 is the flagship of its SUV lineup. BMW set a US sales record in 2025.

Deals & incentive availability75
#5 of 10 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

KBB Fair Purchase Pricing runs $6,775–$12,575 below MSRP depending on trim. BMW Financial Services lease support and loyalty/conquest cash were common, so real discounts were available without desperation pricing.

Model freshness64
#9 of 10 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

This is the G07 generation, launched for MY2019, with the LCI facelift arriving for MY2023. 2025 is the third year after that refresh on a seven-year-old platform, so it is current but aging, with no replacement announced for the near term.

Critical reception & awards72
#7 of 10 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Reviewers praise the tech, the engaging drive and the luxurious cabin, but note the tight third row and polarizing face. It rarely beats the GLS or Escalade in comparisons and won no major 2025 awards.
