The verdict

A capable full-size luxury suv, strong on technology and held back by ownership.

The 2023 X7 is the facelift year. It brings the curved 14.9-inch iDrive 8 screen, a 375-hp mild-hybrid inline-six and a new 523-hp M60i, all on top of a plush standard air suspension and one of the quietest, richest cabins in the class. It drives like a big luxury sedan and tows 7,500 lbs, but running it is very expensive. It starts at $78,845, costs an estimated $58,000 over five years, burns about $3,750 a year in premium fuel at 22 MPG, and comes with only a 4-year/50,000-mile warranty. Buy it for the comfort and tech, and budget for the cost.

2023 is the facelift year (LCI, production from July 2022): the volume xDrive40i gets the updated B58 3.0L turbo inline-six with standard 48V mild-hybrid, up from 335 hp in 2022. The new M60i replaces the M50i with a 523-hp 4.4L twin-turbo V8.

The mild-hybrid B58 makes 398 lb-ft from low rpm; the M60i's V8 makes 553 lb-ft.

#3 of 9 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

BMW quotes 5.6 s for the facelifted 375-hp xDrive40i, though some spec aggregators still carry 5.8 s; instrumented tests run in the low-to-mid 5s.

Powertrain refinement92
#2 of 9 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The B58 inline-six is widely praised as one of the smoothest engines on sale, with almost no turbo lag. The new 48V mild-hybrid system smooths stop/start and adds low-speed response.

Transmission behavior92
#3 of 9 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The ZF 8HP 8-speed automatic is the segment benchmark: shifts you barely notice, quick kickdowns, and a well-judged sport mode.

Rated at 7,500 lbs with the factory hitch, near the top of the luxury SUV set.

AWD/4WD availability88
#4 of 9 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

xDrive AWD is standard on every 2023 X7 trim, rear-biased and electronically controlled. There's no low range, but the system is competitive for the class.

Off-road capability32
#9 of 9 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

A road-biased luxury flagship. The two-axle air suspension can raise ride height for gravel and mild trails, but there is no low range, no locking differentials and no dedicated off-road trim for 2023.

Powertrain lineup breadth48
#5 of 9 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Three gas powertrains for 2023, all 48V mild-hybrid: the 375-hp six, the 523-hp V8 and the 631-hp Alpina XB7 V8. There is no hybrid, PHEV or EV variant.

NHTSA overall rating
Not rated by NHTSA
0/100
#6 of 9 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

NHTSA has never published an overall 5-Star Safety Rating for the G07 BMW X7, including the 2023 facelift year; low-volume luxury SUVs are frequently skipped by NCAP.

IIHS awards & crashworthiness55
#4 of 9 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

IIHS has not crash-tested the X7 (no 2023 ratings page exists), so there is no award and no verified crashworthiness result; the robust G07/CLAR structure shared with the Good-rated X5 suggests sound performance, but untested status keeps it in the mid band.

Standard ADAS suite breadth76
#7 of 9 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Standard Active Driving Assistant on the volume xDrive40i bundles frontal-collision warning with city/pedestrian AEB, lane-departure warning, Active Blind Spot Detection, rear cross-traffic alert and rear collision prevention; full-speed ACC with Stop&Go and lane centering sit in the optional Driving Assistance Professional package, which keeps it below 80.

Automatic emergency braking performance75
#3 of 9 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Frontal collision warning with city-speed AEB and pedestrian/cyclist detection is standard and uses the same camera/radar stack as the X5, but IIHS never rated the X7's front crash prevention, so performance is inferred.

Blind-spot & cross-traffic coverage80
#4 of 9 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Active Blind Spot Detection (with steering-wheel vibration and lane-change warning) and rear cross-traffic alert are standard; active lane-change collision avoidance with steering intervention and front cross-traffic alert come with Driving Assistance Professional.

Lane keeping & centering78
#2 of 9 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Lane-departure warning is standard; the optional Steering and Lane Control Assistant centers smoothly on marked highways with minor corrections, per reviewers, but is not standard equipment.

Adaptive cruise & highway assist83
#3 of 9 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Optional Active Cruise Control with Stop&Go to a full stop and automatic resume is smooth and well integrated with lane centering, a refined highway assist — but it is a package option rather than standard.

Hands-free driving availability68
#3 of 9 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The 2023 facelift brought BMW's Highway Assistant, allowing hands-off driving up to 85 mph on mapped divided highways, but coverage is narrower than Super Cruise/BlueCruise and it requires the top ADAS package.

Headlight performance78
#3 of 9 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The facelifted 2023 X7 gets new split adaptive LED headlights with cornering lights and auto high beams standard; IIHS has not rated them, so the score is inferred from BMW adaptive-LED results on related models.

Outward visibility78
#3 of 9 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

High seating position and tall glass give strong forward and side sightlines; wide D-pillars create rear-quarter blind zones, partly compensated by standard Parking Assistant with rearview camera and available surround view.

Child-seat (LATCH) usability80
#4 of 9 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Second-row outboard LATCH anchors are easy to reach, large rear doors ease installation, and the roomy three-row cabin fits multiple seats (bench or captain's chairs); lower anchors are limited to outboard positions.

#1 of 9 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The 2023 facelifted X7 xDrive40i starts at $77,850 plus $995 destination. That is far above the SUV band ceiling of $65,000, so this item scores 0.

Volume-Trim Price
≈$86,500 (xDrive40i with Premium Pkg, Driving Assistance Pro, paint/wheels)
0/100
#1 of 9 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The xDrive40i is the volume trim. As typically equipped (Premium Package, Driving Assistance Professional, metallic paint, wheel upgrade) it transacts at about $85,000–$88,000, well above the SUV band ceiling.

5-Year Maintenance & Repair Cost
≈$10,500 over 5 years (maintenance + repairs)
0/100
#7 of 9 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Edmunds puts the 2023 X7's 5-year maintenance plus repairs at about $11,300, and CarEdge projects roughly $1,250/yr in maintenance alone for the 2023 model year. Both put the X7 above the SUV band ceiling of $9,500.

5-Year Resale Value Retention
≈45% of MSRP retained after 5 years (estimates range 37–53%)
17/100
#2 of 9 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Sources disagree. CarEdge's generic X7 curve projects 37% retained at 5 years, while Edmunds' ~$46k 5-year depreciation implies about 47% lost. The 2023 model specifically still holds about 65% after ~3 years, which points to roughly 45% at year 5: typical big-German-luxury depreciation.

Basic warranty
4 yr / 50,000 mi
50/100
#2 of 9 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

BMW's New Vehicle Limited Warranty runs 4 years / 50,000 miles. That is standard German-luxury coverage, behind Genesis and Lincoln at 5 years / 60,000 miles (Genesis basic; Lincoln basic).

Powertrain warranty
4 yr / 50,000 mi (no separate longer powertrain term)
0/100
#7 of 9 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

BMW has no separate long-term powertrain warranty; the drivetrain is covered only by the 4 yr / 50k basic warranty. That falls below the 5-year band floor.

Complimentary maintenance & perks62
#3 of 9 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Every new 2023 BMW includes BMW Ultimate Care: scheduled maintenance (oil/filter, brake fluid, cabin/engine filters, plugs) for 3 years / 36,000 miles, plus 4 yr / unlimited-mile roadside assistance and a ConnectedDrive trial. That is a real but short included-maintenance window; it no longer covers wear items as the old 4-year plan did.

Effective 5-Year Ownership Cost
$58,075 (≈$47,575 depreciation + $10,500 maintenance)
0/100
#2 of 9 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

$86,500 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (45% retained, or about $38,925) leaves about $47,575 in depreciation. Add the projected $10,500 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $58,075 in total.

6Reliability & QualityGrades above the middle of the scale.2.74B-
Predicted reliability66
#2 of 9 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Consumer Reports rates the 2023 X7 about average for reliability against other 2023 models. 2023 was the first year of the LCI refresh (iDrive 8 on the Curved Display, new 48V mild-hybrid powertrains, new front end), and first-year-of-refresh electronics plus owner brake complaints keep it out of the upper band.

Brand reliability track record68
#2 of 9 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

BMW has sat in the upper-middle of recent Consumer Reports brand reliability rankings and near the industry average in J.D. Power's Vehicle Dependability Study — well ahead of Land Rover and Mercedes-Benz, but behind Lexus, Toyota and Mazda.

Recall & TSB history52
#2 of 9 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The 2023 X7 has an above-typical recall load for a single model year, and it repeats: four separate campaigns hit the integrated braking/DSC module (possible loss of power brake assist or ABS/DSC function), on top of campaigns for the catalytic converter, windshield, exterior lighting and seats. None involves a fire or engine failure, but the repeated brake-system campaigns sit at the low end of 'typical'.

Powertrain durability reputation80
#1 of 9 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The volume xDrive40i uses the B58 3.0L turbo inline-six, now with a 48V mild-hybrid starter-generator for 2023, paired with the ZF 8HP automatic. Both have strong high-mileage reputations. The 48V system was new to the X7 in 2023 and is less proven, so the score sits a little below the 2026 car's.

Interior material quality90
#2 of 9 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

As BMW's flagship SUV, the X7 gets the brand's richest cabin: standard Vernasca leather (Merino optional), open-pore wood, glass controls and the new Curved Display for 2023. It is on par with the Mercedes GLS and just short of a Range Rover.

Fit & finish85
#2 of 9 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Built at Spartanburg with consistently tight panel gaps and solid structure in reviews. Scattered owner complaints about first-year iDrive 8 glitches and sky-roof or trim rattles keep it just below the class benchmarks.

Dealer & service network78
#3 of 9 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

About 345 US BMW centers give dense metro coverage and thinner rural coverage. Service satisfaction is around the luxury average, and BMW Ultimate Care covers scheduled maintenance for 3 years/36k miles.

Parts availability & repair cost58
#4 of 9 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Parts are easy to get through dealers and the German-car aftermarket, but repairs out of warranty are expensive: two-axle air suspension, Sky Lounge panoramic roof, 21–22-inch tires and complex electronics.

Outdoor & adventure capability68

10Value & Market PositionOne of the X7's strongest categories.2.92B-
Standard equipment generosity72

The 2023 xDrive40i comes standard with the facelift's curved 12.3 + 14.9-inch iDrive 8 display, two-axle air suspension, 375-hp mild-hybrid I6, 21-inch wheels, wireless CarPlay/Android Auto, dynamic cruise control, a panoramic roof and a power tailgate. It's well equipped for the class, though Driving Assistance Professional, ventilated/massaging seats and premium audio cost extra.

Feature value per dollar72
#3 of 9 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

At $78,845 delivered, the xDrive40i undercut the 2023 Mercedes GLS 450 (~$87k) and Lexus LX (~$90k) and roughly matched the Escalade, while adding the new 375-hp mild-hybrid six and air suspension as standard. That's solid content per dollar for a flagship luxury three-row, though options escalate quickly.

Trim & configuration breadth74
#4 of 9 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

There are three well-spaced trims: xDrive40i (~$79k), M60i (~$104k) and Alpina XB7 (~$146k). BMW Individual paint/trim and the Premium/Executive/Driving Assistance packages add flexibility. All trims are AWD and gas mild-hybrid only; there is no plug-in or rear-drive entry variant.

Sales popularity & market acceptance70
#4 of 9 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The X7 is a steady performer in the full-size luxury SUV niche, selling in the mid-20,000s per year in the US for 2023. That's comparable to the Mercedes GLS but behind the Cadillac Escalade family. The facelift sustained demand.

Brand desirability & image88
#2 of 9 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

BMW is one of the most aspirational luxury brands, and the X7 sits atop its SAV range with strong status appeal and a loyal owner base. The polarizing grille is the main image detractor.

Deals & incentive availability60
#5 of 9 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

For the 2023 model year, post-chip-shortage inventory was still tight and the freshly facelifted X7 rarely saw big discounts. BMW Financial Services ran lease programs and loyalty cash, but meaningful dealer discounting only returned late in the model year as inventory recovered.

Model freshness74
#6 of 9 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

2023 is the facelift (LCI) year: production began July 2022 with new split headlights, the curved iDrive 8 widescreen and mild-hybrid powertrains across the range. The G07 platform itself dates to 2019, so this is a freshly refreshed mid-cycle model rather than a new generation.

Critical reception & awards72
#6 of 9 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Reviewers praised the 2023 X7's quiet, plush cabin, strong powertrains (especially the new M60i V8), air-suspension ride and upgraded tech. However, the split-headlight face drew criticism and the X7 usually trails the Mercedes GLS in comparisons; it won no major awards.
