The verdict
A capable full-size luxury suv, strong on technology and held back by ownership.
The 2024 X7 is one of the nicest three-row SUVs to drive and sit in. Its silky 375-hp inline-six, standard air suspension and quiet, richly finished cabin make it an excellent long-distance family cruiser, and it can tow 7,500 lbs. The catch is cost. It starts at $82,895 and a typical build runs about $90,000, it burns premium fuel at 22 MPG, and it has no free maintenance. Neither NHTSA nor IIHS has ever crash-tested it.

Detailed scoring by subject
1Performance & PowertrainGrades above the middle of the scale.2.82B-
The volume xDrive40i makes 375 hp from the turbocharged inline-six with 48V mild-hybrid assist. The 2023 facelift brought this engine in, and 2024 carries it over unchanged. The M60i V8 (523 hp) and ALPINA XB7 (631 hp) top the range.
398 lb-ft arrives low, at 1,850 rpm, which is strong for a six-cylinder in a three-row luxury SUV.
BMW quotes 5.6 seconds for a roughly 5,400-lb three-row xDrive40i. That is quick for the class, and instrumented tests typically beat the factory figure.
BMW's B58 inline-six is widely praised for its smoothness and early torque. The 48V mild-hybrid starter-generator makes auto stop-start nearly imperceptible and fills in the bottom of the rev range, so there is no meaningful lag.
Every X7 uses the ZF-sourced 8-speed Steptronic automatic, which is smooth in normal driving, decisive under kickdown and well calibrated with the mild-hybrid system. It has shift paddles and a Sport mode.
With the factory tow hitch, the X7 is rated to tow 7,500 lbs. That is near the top of the unibody luxury three-row class.
xDrive all-wheel drive is standard on every US trim, paired with standard two-axle air suspension and selectable drive modes. The M60i adds an M Sport rear differential. There is no low range.
The air suspension can raise ride height for rough tracks and snow, but the X7 is a road-biased luxury SUV. It has no locking differentials, low range or dedicated off-road trim in the US lineup, and it runs on large-diameter street tires.
There are three gas choices: the mild-hybrid I6, the mild-hybrid V8 M60i and the ALPINA XB7 V8. All are gas, with no plug-in hybrid or EV variant, unlike the sibling X5 xDrive50e.
2Efficiency & RangeOne of the X7's weakest categories.0.46F
The EPA rates the volume xDrive40i with the 3.0L turbo I6 mild hybrid at 22 MPG combined. That is typical of a full-size gas luxury three-row and well short of hybrid rivals.
21 MPG city is helped modestly by the 48V mild-hybrid stop-start, but the vehicle's weight limits it.
25 MPG highway is middling for the segment. The aerodynamic drag and mass of a large three-row body cap cruising efficiency.
A 21.9-gallon tank at the EPA's 22 MPG combined gives roughly 482 miles per tank, which is comfortably above the segment midpoint.
Premium fuel and 22 MPG combined put the EPA annual fuel cost at $3,750, near the top of the SUV band. The M60i costs more still.
The EPA lists premium gasoline for every 2024 X7 configuration. There is no regular-fuel or plug-in alternative in the lineup to offset the cost.
3SafetyOne of the X7's weakest categories.1.87C-
NHTSA has not crash-tested the 2024 X7: overall, frontal, side and rollover are all listed as Not Rated, so the framework's 0 = never rated applies.
IIHS has never crash-tested the X7, so the 2024 model holds no Top Safety Pick award and has no published crashworthiness results. Scored at the bottom of the untested band rather than lower, because there are no known structural concerns; the related CLAR-platform X5 has done well in IIHS testing.
Active Driving Assistant is standard on every 2024 X7: frontal collision warning with City Collision Mitigation AEB, Lane Keeping Assistant, Active Blind Spot Detection, rear cross-traffic alert and High Beam Assistant. Adaptive cruise with Stop&Go and lane centering are in the optional Driving Assistance Professional package, which holds this below the 80+ band.
AEB with pedestrian and cyclist detection is standard. IIHS has not published a front-crash-prevention rating for the X7, so performance is inferred from BMW's shared camera/radar stack on rated siblings and docked for the lack of any X7-specific result.
Active Blind Spot Detection, which steers back away from a vehicle in the blind spot, comes standard along with rear cross-traffic alert. Lane-change collision avoidance and front cross-traffic alert require the Driving Assistance Professional package.
Lane Keeping Assistant is standard. Lane centering (Steering & Lane Control Assistant) is optional and reviewers find it smooth on highways. IIHS rated Driving Assistant Pro Good on cooperative steering.
Optional Active Cruise Control with Stop&Go is refined in normal driving, and the X7 gained Highway Assistant with the 2023 facelift, but the package is not standard. IIHS rated BMW's system Poor on ACC resume behavior and attention reminders.
Highway Assistant is available and allows hands-free driving up to 85 mph on controlled-access highways. It needs the optional package, and its coverage and maturity trail Super Cruise.
The 2023 facelift brought split Adaptive LED headlights with cornering lights and standard automatic high beams (High Beam Assistant), with Icon Adaptive LED available. IIHS has not rated the X7's headlights, so this score is inferred from the hardware.
A tall seating position and a large glass area give good forward sightlines. The thick D-pillars and the vehicle's size create rear-quarter blind zones; the standard Parking Assistant with rearview camera and the available Surround View cameras help offset them.
Large rear doors and a spacious second row make child seats easy to fit, and the third row suits booster-age kids. The LATCH anchors sit behind covers and can need some digging, and the available captain's chairs cut the second row to two seats.
4Space & ComfortGrades above the middle of the scale.2.76B-
The 2024 X7 seats seven as standard, with a second-row bench. Second-row captain's chairs are a common option that reduces capacity to six.
The X7 has generous front headroom for the class, despite the standard panoramic Sky Lounge roof.
BMW's published front legroom figure is short for a full-size SUV, below the bottom of the segment band. Reviewers do not report the front seats as cramped, however, so this partly reflects how BMW measures legroom.
Second-row headroom is excellent, helped by the tall, boxy roofline.
Second-row legroom is adequate rather than limo-like for the X7's size. The power-sliding second row can trade legroom with the third row.
The third row has power-folding, heated seats, its own climate controls and power-sliding second-row access. Its 33.3 in of legroom suits kids and short adult trips, but it trails the Escalade and GLS for adults.
With the third row folded there is 48.6 cu ft, which is mid-pack for a full-size three-row SUV. With all seats up, the 12.8 cu ft behind the third row is small.
Maximum cargo space is large, though the Escalade and Expedition-class SUVs offer more.
Practical features include a split tailgate, power-folding second and third rows with a button in the cargo area, an underfloor tray, and optional heated/cooled cupholders. Console and door storage is competitive but not standout, and the X7 has no household power outlet.
The multi-way power front comfort seats are widely praised on long drives, and massage is optional. The second row is supportive, and the third row is fine for short trips.
Standard two-axle air suspension with adaptive dampers gives a plush yet controlled ride on the volume xDrive40i. It is among the better-riding vehicles in the segment.
Acoustic glass and heavy insulation keep the X7 very quiet at highway speeds, with only mild tire roar on large wheels.
Four-zone climate, heated front seats and the panoramic roof are standard. Five-zone climate, heated rear seats, ventilated front seats, a heated wheel, massage, and heated/cooled cupholders come in affordable packages. Remote pre-conditioning works through the app.
5Cost of OwnershipThe X7's lowest-graded category.0.00F
The 2024 X7 xDrive40i lists at $81,900 before destination, about $82,895 delivered. That is far above the $65,000 SUV band ceiling, so it scores 0.
The volume xDrive40i is usually ordered with the Premium Package (about $3,500), Driving Assistance Professional (about $1,700), paint and wheel options. That puts a typical build near $90,000, well above the $68,000 band ceiling.
With no free scheduled maintenance, air suspension and a lot of electronics, a full-size German luxury SUV is expensive to service. Five-year maintenance and repair comes to about $9,500, at the SUV band ceiling.
The 2024 X7 has lost about 18% in its first two years, which is better than many German luxury SUVs. It is still projected to keep only about half its value after five years, as heavy lease-return volume weighs on prices.
BMW's New Vehicle Limited Warranty runs 4 years or 50,000 miles. That is standard for German luxury brands and behind Genesis at 5 years / 60,000 miles.
BMW has no separate, longer powertrain warranty. The drivetrain is covered only by the 4-year/50,000-mile basic warranty, which is below the 5-year band floor.
BMW ended free scheduled maintenance after MY2016, and Ultimate Care+ is now a paid plan. The 2024 X7 includes only 4-year/unlimited-mile roadside assistance and a connected-services trial, which is thin for an $83k+ SUV.
$90,000 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (48% retained, or about $43,200) leaves about $46,800 in depreciation. Add the projected $9,500 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $56,300 in total.
6Reliability & QualityOne of the X7's strongest categories.3.13B
Consumer Reports rates the 2024 X7 as much more reliable than the average 2024 vehicle, while J.D. Power owners give a solid-but-not-elite 73/100 Quality & Reliability score; the two sources agree on above-average but differ on degree.
BMW has moved firmly into the upper tier of recent dependability studies — top ten in J.D. Power VDS and a top-five brand in Consumer Reports' recent brand rankings — a markedly better standing than its older reputation suggests.
The 2024 X7 is caught up in BMW's repeated integrated-brake-system campaigns (loss of power brake assist / ABS-DSC) — three separate recalls on the same safety-critical component — plus a small instrument-panel/airbag campaign; individually limited in population but systemic for the brake module.
The volume xDrive40i uses the B58 3.0L turbo inline-six with the post-2023-facelift 48V mild-hybrid system and ZF 8HP automatic — BMW's most proven modern engine/transmission pairing with a strong high-mileage record; the 48V MHEV addition is the only newer element.
As BMW's flagship SUV the X7 gets extended Merino leather, real wood/metal trim, crystal shifter and the curved-display dash from the facelift; reviewers consistently rate the cabin among the richest in the full-size luxury segment.
Spartanburg-built X7s are generally tight and quiet with consistent panel gaps; owner complaints center on electronics (CarPlay dropouts, infotainment staying on) and isolated sunroof issues rather than assembly faults.
BMW's roughly 345 US dealers cover metros and most secondary markets well, though rural coverage is thinner than mainstream brands; BMW Ultimate Care (3 yr/36k scheduled maintenance) is included.
Shared CLAR/B58 hardware with the X5 keeps parts readily available and aftermarket support decent, but the X7's standard two-axle air suspension, large wheels and dense electronics make out-of-warranty repairs expensive.
7Technology & InfotainmentThe X7's best-graded category.3.71A
Every 2024 X7 has the Curved Display, which pairs a 14.9 in touchscreen with a 12.3 in digital cluster.
iDrive 8, updated to 8.5 from July 2023 production, has fast, crisp graphics and keeps the rotary controller. Moving climate controls into the screen means many taps for simple tasks such as fan speed or the heated wheel.
Wireless Apple CarPlay and wireless Android Auto are standard on every 2024 X7.
The BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant handles natural-language commands well. Standard cloud-based navigation includes an augmented-reality view.
A Harman Kardon surround system is standard. The optional 20-speaker, 1,500-watt Bowers & Wilkins system is widely rated as superb.
A standard 12.3 in configurable digital cluster sits in the Curved Display. It is crisp, though some reviewers find the layouts less informative than Mercedes' or Audi's.
BMW Operating System 8 receives whole-vehicle Remote Software Upgrades that have added functions, such as remote parking via the app for 2024.
The My BMW app covers remote start and climate, locking and vehicle location. Phone-based Digital Key is standard, and the app can remotely maneuver the car with Parking Assistant Professional.
USB-C ports serve the front and rear rows, and wireless charging is standard. There is no household AC outlet; rear power is 12V only.
Comfort Access keyless entry, a hands-free power split tailgate, app remote start and the phone/NFC/UWB Digital Key are all standard.
The rear camera and sensors are standard. A 3D surround view and automated parking cost just $900 with the Parking Assistance Package, and app-based remote parking is available.
A large full-color head-up display with navigation, speed and media information is standard on every X7.
8Use-Case FitMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.35C+
The large rear doors, power-sliding second row with one-touch third-row access, and up to seven seats make family duty easy. The 12.8 cu ft behind the third row limits strollers when every seat is in use.
Standard driver aids include automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert. The X7 has not been crash-tested by NHTSA or IIHS, which limits how much credit it can earn here.
The air-suspension ride, quiet cabin, available five-zone climate, rear shades and a roomy second row make it an excellent family tourer. Luggage space with all seven seats occupied is the weak point.
The smooth mild-hybrid inline-six, seamless stop-start and Driving Assistant Professional (available) make traffic relaxing. Its sheer size and the touch-heavy climate controls add minor friction.
At 22 MPG combined on premium fuel, with luxury tires and maintenance costs, the X7 is expensive per commuting mile, though average for a full-size luxury SUV.
At 203 in long with a 42.8 ft turning circle, the X7 is cumbersome in tight urban spaces. Available rear-axle steering, a surround camera and automated parking help considerably.
A 7,500 lb tow rating and 90 cu ft of cargo space give real hauling capacity, but the luxury cabin and air suspension make it a poor fit for working use.
It is a luxury-oriented vehicle with leather and fine trim, plus a costly air suspension, so it is not suited to hard use or fleet work.
It has cargo tie-downs, a split tailgate, roof rails and a factory hitch, but no onboard AC power, washable surfaces or upfit ecosystem.
This is a superb highway cruiser: an air-sprung ride, a quiet cabin, praised seats, about 480 miles of range and available hands-free Driving Assistant Professional.
Standard xDrive AWD, an adjustable-height air suspension and a 7,500 lb tow rating handle gravel roads, boats and campers. An off-road package exists in some markets, but in practice the X7 stays on pavement.
Power-folding second and third rows, a split tailgate, roof rails, a hitch, and 90 cu ft maximum (48.6 cu ft behind the second row) make it flexible for gear. With all rows up, cargo space is tight.
9Driving ExperienceOne of the X7's strongest categories.3.13B
The facelifted X7 xDrive40i pulled 0.92 g on Car and Driver's skidpad, beating the X7 M60i and Range Rover Sport. Body control is excellent for a three-row SUV.
The steering is precise and well weighted, with optional Integral Active Steering, but like most modern BMWs it offers little road feel.
A 149 ft stop from 70 mph is exceptional for a 5,400 lb three-row SUV, shorter than the X7 M60i and Audi RS Q8.
The B58 inline-six with its 48V starter-generator delivers strong low-end torque, near-imperceptible stop-start and crisp 8-speed shifts.
The inline-six is smooth and pleasant-sounding when pushed, and nearly inaudible when cruising.
The large turning circle reflects the 122.2 in wheelbase. Optional Integral Active Steering tightens it.
The commanding seat with wide adjustment, a standard HUD and good outward sightlines are strengths. Climate controls buried in the touchscreen hurt ergonomics.
It is surprisingly agile and quick (0–60 mph in 5.6 s) for its size, and Car and Driver argued the six-cylinder is the sweeter X7. Still, it is a large luxury hauler first.
10Value & Market PositionGrades above the middle of the scale.3.09B
The xDrive40i comes standard with two-axle air suspension, a panoramic roof, the curved iDrive 8 display, heated front seats, leatherette/Vernasca upholstery, a power-folding third row and wireless CarPlay/Android Auto. Driving Assistant Professional, premium audio and ventilated seats still cost extra.
The xDrive40i undercuts the GLS 450 by about $5k and the Range Rover and Lexus LX by $20k+. For that it delivers a 375-hp mild-hybrid inline-six, standard air suspension and refreshed MY2023+ tech. Fair to good value for a flagship luxury three-row SUV.
For 2024 there are three well-spaced trims: xDrive40i ($82.9k), M60i ($109.7k) and Alpina XB7 ($150.4k), plus Premium/Executive packages, six- or seven-seat layouts and Individual paint options. There is no RWD, PHEV or diesel.
US sales reached 29,632 in 2024, up 2.9% from 28,797 in 2023. That makes the X7 a steady, slightly growing seller near the top of its niche, behind the Escalade family but on par with or ahead of the GLS.
BMW is one of the most aspirational luxury brands, with a loyal owner base, and the X7 is the flagship of its SUV lineup. The brand image supports its status appeal.
BMW Financial Services offered regular X7 lease support and loyalty/conquest cash through 2024, and dealers commonly discounted xDrive40i stock. Over-MSRP pricing did not apply.
This is the G07 generation, launched for MY2019. The major LCI facelift (split headlights, curved display, iDrive 8, mild hybrid on every trim) arrived in mid-2022 for MY2023, so 2024 is the second year of a fresh refresh on an aging platform. There is no imminent replacement.
Reviewers praise the quiet cabin, strong engines and plush air ride. The polarizing face and iDrive complexity keep it from winning comparisons against the GLS and Escalade, and it won no major 2024 awards.
