The verdict

A mixed-report full-size luxury suv, strong on technology and held back by ownership.

The 2021 BMW X7 is a plush, quiet three-row flagship. It pairs a silky 335-hp inline-six with standard air suspension, a richly finished cabin and a 7,500-lb tow rating. That luxury is expensive to run: about 21 MPG on premium fuel, a $75,895 starting price, steep depreciation and costly out-of-warranty repairs all weigh on it, and neither NHTSA nor IIHS ever crash-tested it. As a used buy it suits shoppers who want BMW comfort for six or seven and can budget for upkeep. It is the pre-facelift car, sold one year before the 2023 refresh.

2021 is a carry-over year of the pre-facelift first generation (launched 2019; the facelift arrived in 2022 for MY2023). The volume xDrive40i uses the B58 3.0L turbo inline-six at 335 hp. The M50i V8 makes 523 hp, and the Alpina XB7 joined the US lineup for 2021 with 612 hp.

#7 of 7 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The pre-facelift B58 makes 330 lb-ft from 1,500 rpm. That is solid for the class but trails the 398 lb-ft of the 2023 mild-hybrid update.

#3 of 7 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

BMW quotes 5.8 s for the 335-hp xDrive40i, which is quick for a three-row full-size SUV weighing roughly 5,400 lb.

Powertrain refinement88
#2 of 7 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The B58 inline-six is widely praised for its smoothness and minimal turbo lag, even moving a heavy three-row SUV. It lacks the later 48V mild-hybrid's smoother stop/start, which is why it scores slightly below the 2023 car.

Transmission behavior90
#2 of 7 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The ZF 8HP 8-speed automatic shifts almost imperceptibly, kicks down quickly and has well-judged Sport logic. It is the benchmark for the segment.

AWD/4WD availability80
#5 of 7 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

xDrive AWD is standard on every 2021 X7 and is rear-biased and electronically controlled. There is no low range, and with the xOffroad package dropped for MY2021 there are no dedicated terrain modes.

Off-road capability32
#6 of 7 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

A road-biased luxury flagship. The standard two-axle air suspension can raise ride height for gravel and mild trails. The launch-era xOffroad package (sump guards, terrain modes, M differential) was dropped in the US for MY2021, so there is no low range, no locker and no off-road trim.

Powertrain lineup breadth45
#4 of 7 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Three gas powertrains for 2021: the 335-hp six, the 523-hp V8 and the 612-hp Alpina XB7 V8. There is no hybrid, PHEV or EV option.

#5 of 7 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

NHTSA never published an overall 5-Star Safety Rating for the first-generation (G07) X7, including the 2021 model year; low-volume luxury SUVs are often skipped by NCAP.

IIHS awards & crashworthiness55
#2 of 7 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

IIHS has not crash-tested the 2021 X7, so there is no award and no verified crashworthiness result; the CLAR platform shared with the Good-rated X5 suggests sound structure, but untested status keeps it mid-band.

Standard ADAS suite breadth75
#3 of 7 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The volume xDrive40i carries standard Active Driving Assistant: frontal collision warning with city/pedestrian AEB, lane-departure warning, Active Blind Spot Detection, rear cross-traffic alert and rear collision prevention; full-speed ACC and lane centering require the optional Driving Assistance Professional package.

Automatic emergency braking performance74
#1 of 7 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

City-speed AEB with pedestrian/cyclist detection is standard and uses the same camera/radar hardware as the X5, but IIHS never rated the X7's front crash prevention, so performance is inferred.

Blind-spot & cross-traffic coverage78
#1 of 7 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Active Blind Spot Detection with steering-wheel vibration and rear cross-traffic alert are standard; active lane-change collision avoidance with steering intervention and front cross-traffic alert are tied to Driving Assistance Professional.

Lane keeping & centering76
#1 of 7 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Lane-departure warning is standard; the optional Steering and Lane Control Assistant centers competently on marked highways with minor corrections, but it is a package option rather than standard.

Adaptive cruise & highway assist80
#1 of 7 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Optional Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go brakes to a full stop and resumes, smoothly integrated with lane centering for a refined highway assist; held to 80 because it is not standard.

Hands-free driving availability55
#2 of 7 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Pre-facelift 2021 X7 offers only Extended Traffic Jam Assistant, hands-off driving below about 40 mph on limited-access highways with driver monitoring; the 85-mph Highway Assistant didn't arrive until the 2023 facelift.

Headlight performance72
#1 of 7 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Adaptive LED headlights with automatic high beams are standard and BMW Laserlight is available, but IIHS never rated the X7's headlights, so performance is inferred from related BMW LED systems.

Outward visibility78
#2 of 7 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

High seating position and tall glass give strong forward and side views; thick D-pillars create rear-quarter blind zones, offset by standard rearview camera and parking sensors with available surround view.

Child-seat (LATCH) usability80
#2 of 7 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Second-row outboard LATCH anchors are easy to reach, large rear doors ease installation, and the roomy three-row cabin fits multiple seats with bench or captain's chairs; lower anchors are limited to outboard positions.

Split two-piece tailgate, electrically folding second and third rows and underfloor storage are useful touches; console and door storage are merely competitive.

Seat comfort80
#5 of 7 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Power front seats with memory are supportive and widely praised; multi-contour, ventilated and massaging seats require the optional Luxury Seating package on the xDrive40i (they became standard only with the 2023 facelift).

Ride quality86
#3 of 7 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Standard two-axle air suspension delivers a plush, well-controlled ride that reviewers rank among the class best.

Cabin quietness85
#1 of 7 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Very quiet at highway speeds with acoustic glazing; on par with the GLS.

Climate & comfort features80
#4 of 7 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Four-zone automatic climate plus heated front seats, armrests and steering wheel are standard for 2021; five-zone climate, heated rear seats, ventilation and massage are package options.

5Cost of OwnershipThe X7's lowest-graded category.0.00F
Base MSRP
$75,895 (xDrive40i incl. $995 destination; M50i $100,795; Alpina XB7 $142,295)
0/100
#1 of 7 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The 2021 X7 xDrive40i (pre-facelift G07, now with a 48V mild-hybrid I6) starts at $74,900 plus $995 destination. That is far above the SUV band ceiling of $65,000.

Volume-Trim Price
≈$83,500 (xDrive40i with Premium Pkg, Driving Assistance Pro, paint/wheels)
0/100
#1 of 7 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The xDrive40i is the volume trim. As typically equipped (Premium Package, Driving Assistance Professional, metallic paint, wheel upgrade) it lands around $82,000–$86,000, well above the SUV band ceiling.

5-Year Maintenance & Repair Cost
≈$11,000 over first 5 years (maintenance + repairs, new-car basis)
0/100
#6 of 7 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

On a new-car basis the X7 runs about $11,000 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, in line with Edmunds' new-car figure for the same G07 generation. That is above the SUV band ceiling of $9,500. Edmunds' current 2021 page prices the next 5 years of a now-used car ($14,746 maintenance + $7,662 repairs), which overstates the as-new cost.

5-Year Resale Value Retention
≈40% of MSRP retained after 5 years (CarEdge: 37% model curve; 2021 MY ~43% at ~4 yrs)
0/100
#5 of 7 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The 2021 X7 has largely played out its depreciation: CarEdge shows the 2021 model year retaining about 43% of its original value at roughly four years old, and its model-wide curve projects 37% at five. About 40% is the realistic five-year figure, at the SUV band floor.

Basic warranty
4 yr / 50,000 mi
50/100
#1 of 7 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

BMW's New Vehicle Limited Warranty runs 4 years / 50,000 miles. That is standard German-luxury coverage, behind Genesis and Lincoln at 5 years / 60,000 miles.

Powertrain warranty
4 yr / 50,000 mi (no separate longer powertrain term)
0/100
#5 of 7 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

BMW has no separate long-term powertrain warranty; the drivetrain is covered only by the 4 yr / 50k basic warranty. That falls below the 5-year band floor.

Complimentary maintenance & perks62
#1 of 7 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Every new 2021 BMW includes BMW Ultimate Care: scheduled maintenance (oil/filter, brake fluid, cabin/engine filters, plugs) for 3 years / 36,000 miles. It also adds 4 yr / unlimited-mile roadside assistance and a ConnectedDrive trial. That is a real but short included-maintenance window that does not cover wear items.

Effective 5-Year Ownership Cost
$61,100 (≈$50,100 depreciation + $11,000 maintenance)
0/100
#3 of 7 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

$83,500 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (40% retained, or about $33,400) leaves about $50,100 in depreciation. Add the projected $11,000 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $61,100 in total.

6Reliability & QualityGrades above the middle of the scale.2.70B-
Predicted reliability58
#2 of 7 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The sources disagree. Consumer Reports rates the 2021 X7 less reliable than other 2021 models. J.D. Power puts it at average-to-great on Quality & Reliability, and the X7 won a J.D. Power initial-quality award. A carry-over third year of the first generation with no redesign risk, held to the middle of the mixed-signals band by CR's below-average verdict.

Brand reliability track record68
#3 of 7 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

BMW has sat in the upper-middle of recent Consumer Reports brand reliability rankings and near the industry average in J.D. Power's Vehicle Dependability Study: well ahead of Land Rover and Mercedes-Benz, but behind Lexus, Toyota and Mazda.

Recall & TSB history60
#2 of 7 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Nine recall campaigns touch MY2021, which is a lot of activity, but most cover only a few dozen to a few hundred units: third-row seat springs, head restraints, a steering column (21 units), a 48V/12V battery, headlights, the tire label, and a brake power-assist campaign. The largest is the panoramic-roof campaign shared across BMW's SUVs. None is a fire or engine-failure defect, so this is typical activity.

Powertrain durability reputation82
#2 of 7 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The volume xDrive40i uses the B58 3.0L turbo inline-six (pre-mild-hybrid in 2021) with the ZF 8HP automatic. Both have strong high-mileage reputations. The M50i's 4.4L N63 V8 has a far weaker oil-consumption history, but it is the minority trim.

Interior material quality89
#2 of 7 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

As BMW's flagship SUV, the X7 gets the brand's richest cabin: standard Vernasca leather (Merino optional), open-pore wood and optional glass controls. It is on par with the Mercedes GLS. The pre-refresh iDrive 7 dual-screen dash is a little less modern than the 2023 Curved Display.

Fit & finish85
#2 of 7 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Built at Spartanburg with tight, consistent assembly, and the model won a J.D. Power quality award for initial quality. Scattered owner complaints about panoramic-roof and trim rattles keep it below the class benchmarks.

Dealer & service network78
#4 of 7 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

About 345 US BMW centers give dense metro coverage and thinner rural coverage. Service satisfaction is around the luxury average, and BMW Ultimate Care covers scheduled maintenance for 3 years/36k miles.

Parts availability & repair cost56
#4 of 7 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Parts are easy to get through dealers and the German-car aftermarket, but repairs out of warranty are expensive, and a 2021 is now out of its 4-year/50k warranty. The costly items are the two-axle air suspension, the Sky Lounge panoramic roof, 21–22-inch tires and complex electronics.

The pre-facelift X7 uses a 12.3-in touchscreen with iDrive 7; the 14.9-in Curved Display arrived only with the 2023 facelift.

Infotainment UX & responsiveness80
#1 of 7 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

iDrive 7 is quick and logical, with touch, rotary controller, voice and physical climate buttons; reviewers rate it among the better luxury systems, though menus run deep.

Wireless CarPlay / Android Auto88
#2 of 7 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Lifetime wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard for 2021 (Android Auto was newly added for this model year).

Voice control & native navigation82
#1 of 7 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant ('Hey BMW') handles natural speech, and native navigation with live traffic is standard.

Audio system quality82
#6 of 7 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Base HiFi system is decent; Harman Kardon surround is in the Premium Package, but Bowers & Wilkins was dropped from the xDrive40i for 2021.

Digital instrument cluster85
#3 of 7 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

A 12.3-in fully digital Live Cockpit Professional cluster is standard; crisp but less configurable than some rivals.

OTA update capability72
#2 of 7 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

BMW Operating System 7 vehicles receive Remote Software Upgrades over the air, covering infotainment and some driver-assist functions, though feature additions were limited.

Companion app & remote functions78
#3 of 7 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

My BMW app offers remote lock, climate, locate and (newly standard) remote start; NFC Digital Key on iPhone was supported on OS7 cars from mid-2020 production.

Charging ports & device power75
#2 of 7 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Wireless charging and USB-C ports in the front and second row with 12V outlets; third-row device power is thin.

Keyless & remote access86
#3 of 7 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Comfort Access keyless entry, power split tailgate and now-standard remote start, with phone-as-key available on compatible iPhones.

Camera & parking aids82
#1 of 7 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Parking Assistant with Reversing Assistant and sensors is standard; Surround View with 3D View is in the widely fitted Parking Assistance Package.

Head-up display availability75
#1 of 7 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

A large full-color HUD is available but, for 2021, only within the Premium/Executive packages on the xDrive40i (standard on M50i).

8Use-Case FitMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.27C
Kid & car-seat practicality76
#3 of 7 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Large rear doors, power-sliding second row and seven seats make family logistics easy; third-row space and cargo behind it are tighter than truck-based rivals.

Family safety package68
#2 of 7 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Active Driving Assistant is standard, but the 2021 X7 was never crash-tested by NHTSA or IIHS and adaptive cruise/lane centering cost extra.

Family road-trip comfort78
#4 of 7 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Plush air ride, quiet cabin and four-zone climate suit long family trips, but rear-seat entertainment was discontinued for 2021 and luggage space with all seats up is modest.

Daily driving ease78
#2 of 7 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Smooth mild-hybrid six, excellent ride and quiet cabin make it relaxed in traffic; its size is the main annoyance.

Commuting cost efficiency35
#3 of 7 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Roughly 22 mpg combined on premium fuel makes it an expensive commuter, though typical for a full-size luxury SUV.

Parking & maneuverability45
#5 of 7 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

A roughly 203-inch-long three-row SUV with a ~43-ft turning circle is cumbersome in town; Surround View and Parking Assistant help.

Work capability62
#2 of 7 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

A 7,500-lb tow rating is strong for a unibody luxury SUV, but this is a luxury hauler rather than a work tool.

Durability for work duty45
#5 of 7 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Luxury-oriented cabin, air suspension and complex electronics make it poorly suited to hard work duty.

Jobsite & upfit practicality38
#2 of 7 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Trailer hitch and cargo tie-downs are available, but there is no onboard AC power or work-oriented upfit ecosystem.

Long-distance comfort & range84
#2 of 7 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Excellent highway comfort and quiet, with capable optional Driving Assistance Professional; range is adequate rather than long.

Outdoor & adventure capability52
#6 of 7 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Standard xDrive AWD, adjustable air suspension ride height and 7,500-lb towing handle gravel roads and campers, but the xOffroad package was dropped for 2021.

Gear & luggage flexibility74
#4 of 7 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Power-folding second and third rows, split tailgate, roof rails and 90.4 cu ft maximum give good flexibility; space behind the third row is limited.

10Value & Market PositionOne of the X7's strongest categories.2.79B-
Standard equipment generosity70
#3 of 7 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The 2021 xDrive40i comes standard with the newly mild-hybridized 335-hp turbo six, two-axle air suspension, the 12.3-inch Live Cockpit display pair, a panoramic roof, Vernasca leather, a power tailgate, heated front seats and CarPlay. It's competitive for the class, but ventilated/massaging seats, Driving Assistance Professional and premium audio cost extra.

Feature value per dollar71
#4 of 7 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

At $75,895 delivered the xDrive40i undercut the 2021 Mercedes GLS 450 (~$77k) and the Lexus LX 570 (~$88k), and roughly matched the redesigned Escalade, with air suspension standard. That is fair-to-good value for a flagship three-row, though option pricing climbs quickly.

Trim & configuration breadth72
#4 of 7 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

There are three well-spaced trims: xDrive40i (~$75k), M50i (~$100k) and the new-for-2021 Alpina XB7 (~$141k). BMW Individual paint/trim and the Premium, Luxury Seating and Driving Assistance packages add flexibility, and a 6- or 7-seat layout is available. All trims are AWD gas-only; the xDrive50i was dropped for 2021.

Sales popularity & market acceptance68
#3 of 7 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

In its third model year the X7 was an established, steady seller in the full-size luxury SUV niche, in roughly the low-20,000s per year in the US. That is comparable to the Mercedes GLS but well behind the Cadillac Escalade family, and chip-shortage supply limited 2021 deliveries.

Brand desirability & image88
#3 of 7 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

BMW is one of the most aspirational luxury brands, and the X7 is its flagship SUV with strong status appeal and a loyal owner base. The oversized kidney grille is the main image detractor.

Deals & incentive availability58
#2 of 7 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Early in the 2021 model year BMW Financial Services ran lease support and loyalty/conquest cash on the X7. From mid-2021, however, the semiconductor shortage drained luxury inventory and discounts largely disappeared, with many units selling at or near MSRP.

Model freshness66
#4 of 7 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The G07 X7 launched for 2019, so 2021 is its third year. The update was limited to a mild-hybrid I6 and the new Alpina XB7. A substantial facelift (split headlights, curved iDrive 8 display, MHEV across the range) arrived in 2022 for the 2023 model year, so 2021 buyers got the pre-refresh car shortly before a significant update.

Critical reception & awards72
#4 of 7 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Reviewers praised the 2021 X7's quiet, spacious cabin, smooth inline-six, strong M50i V8 and composed air-suspension ride. It usually trailed the Mercedes GLS in comparisons, the grille drew criticism, and it won no major awards.
