The verdict
A mixed-report full-size luxury suv, strong on technology and held back by ownership.
The 2022 X7 is the last and most mature year of BMW's first-generation flagship SUV. It pairs a silky 335-hp inline-six with a plush standard air suspension, a hushed flagship cabin, standard all-wheel drive and a 7,500-lb tow rating. The catch is the cost of keeping one: premium fuel at 21 MPG runs about $3,900 a year, the warranty is only 4 years/50,000 miles, five-year ownership costs project past $60,000, and neither NHTSA nor IIHS ever crash-tested it. As a used buy it suits shoppers who want BMW polish in three rows and have budgeted for out-of-warranty repairs.

Source: NHTSA Office of Defects Investigation recall database, model years 2019–2026. Recalls are listed by model year as the manufacturer filed them; whether a specific car is affected depends on its VIN — check a VIN at nhtsa.gov ↗. NHTSA model names matched to this page: X7.
Detailed scoring by subject
1Performance & PowertrainMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.54C+
2022 is the last pre-facelift model year (the LCI entered production in July 2022 as a 2023 model). The volume xDrive40i uses the 3.0L twin-scroll turbo B58 inline-six with 48V mild-hybrid assist, rated at 335 hp. The M50i's 4.4L twin-turbo V8 makes 523 hp.
The six makes 330 lb-ft across a broad plateau from 1,500 rpm. The M50i V8 makes 553 lb-ft.
BMW quotes about 5.8 s for the xDrive40i, quick for a three-row luxury SUV weighing roughly 5,400 lb. The M50i cuts that to around 4.5 s.
The B58 inline-six is one of the smoothest, most responsive engines in the class and has almost no turbo lag. The 48V system smooths auto stop/start.
The ZF 8HP eight-speed automatic shifts almost imperceptibly, kicks down quickly and rarely hunts.
Rated to tow 7,500 lbs with the factory hitch, near the top of the luxury SUV field.
xDrive AWD is standard on every 2022 X7. It is rear-biased and electronically controlled, and an off-road package with drive modes was optional, but there is no low range.
This is a road-biased flagship. Standard two-axle air suspension can raise the body, and the optional xOffroad package adds terrain modes and underbody protection. There are no lockers, no low range and no dedicated off-road trim.
There are two BMW-badged gas powertrains for 2022, the 335-hp six and the 523-hp V8, plus the separately sold Alpina XB7. There is no hybrid, PHEV or EV variant.
2Efficiency & RangeOne of the X7's weakest categories.0.12F
EPA rates the 2022 xDrive40i at 21 MPG combined, typical for a large three-row luxury SUV but well short of hybrid rivals.
EPA-rated 19 MPG city.
EPA-rated 24 MPG highway, adequate for a heavy AWD three-row but behind the segment's efficient options.
A 21.9-gallon tank at 21 MPG combined works out to roughly 460 miles, a solid touring range.
Premium fuel at 21 MPG puts EPA's annual fuel-cost estimate above the top of the SUV band.
Every 2022 X7 trim calls for premium unleaded, and there is no plug-in option to offset the fuel bill.
3SafetyOne of the X7's weakest categories.2.03C
NHTSA never published an overall 5-Star Safety Rating for the 2022 X7 (or any year of the G07 generation); low-volume luxury SUVs are often skipped by NCAP.
IIHS has not crash-tested the 2022 X7, so there is no award and no verified crashworthiness result; the CLAR platform shared with the Good-rated X5 suggests sound structure, but untested status keeps it mid-band.
2022 is a pre-facelift carry-over year: the volume xDrive40i carries standard Active Driving Assistant (frontal collision warning with city/pedestrian AEB, lane-departure warning, Active Blind Spot Detection, rear cross-traffic alert, rear collision prevention); full-speed ACC and lane centering require the optional $1,700 Driving Assistance Professional package.
City-speed AEB with pedestrian/cyclist detection is standard and uses the same camera/radar hardware as the X5, but IIHS never rated the X7's front crash prevention, so performance is inferred.
Active Blind Spot Detection with steering-wheel vibration and rear cross-traffic alert are standard; active lane-change collision avoidance and front cross-traffic alert are tied to the optional Driving Assistance Professional package.
Lane-departure warning is standard; the optional Steering and Lane Control Assistant centers competently on marked highways with minor corrections, and reviewers call it one of the better lane-keeping systems, but it is a package option.
Optional Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go brakes to a full stop and resumes, smoothly integrated with lane centering for a refined highway assist; held to 80 because it is not standard on the volume trim.
The pre-facelift 2022 X7 offers only Extended Traffic Jam Assistant, allowing hands-off driving below about 40 mph on limited-access highways with driver monitoring; the 85-mph Highway Assistant arrived with the MY2023 facelift.
Adaptive LED headlights with automatic high beams are standard and BMW Laserlight is available, but IIHS never rated the X7's headlights, so performance is inferred from related BMW LED systems.
High seating position and tall glass give strong forward and side views; thick D-pillars create rear-quarter blind zones, offset by standard rearview camera and parking sensors with available surround view.
Second-row outboard LATCH anchors are easy to reach, large rear doors ease installation, and the roomy three-row cabin fits multiple seats with bench or captain's chairs; lower anchors are limited to outboard positions.
4Space & ComfortOne of the X7's strongest categories.2.77B-
2022 is the last pre-facelift model year, and the cabin carries over unchanged. The xDrive40i seats seven as standard, or six with the optional second-row captain's chairs.
Generous front headroom. The G07 body is unchanged for 2022.
BMW's published front legroom figure is short for the segment, though reviewers don't describe the front row as cramped.
The upright roofline gives the second row tall headroom.
Second-row legroom is good but trails the Escalade and GLS.
The third row works for kids, and for adults on short trips. The second row slides and folds electrically for access, but third-row legroom trails the body-on-frame rivals.
Cargo space behind the second row is about level with the GLS but well short of the Escalade. Space behind the third row is tight.
There is a large maximum cargo area with both rear rows folded.
Useful touches include the split two-piece tailgate, the electrically folding second and third rows, and underfloor storage. Console and door storage are only competitive, and the 2022 wireless-charging deletion takes away one convenience from the console tray.
The power front seats with memory are supportive and widely praised, and the second row is comfortable. Multi-contour, ventilated and massaging front seats need the optional Luxury Seating package on the xDrive40i.
Standard two-axle air suspension gives a plush, well-controlled ride that ranks among the class best. Dropping the Dynamic Handling package from the 40i for 2022 leaves the comfort-biased base setup in place.
The cabin is very quiet at highway speed thanks to acoustic glazing, on par with the GLS.
Four-zone automatic climate and heated front seats, armrests and steering wheel are standard. Five-zone climate, heated rear seats and ventilated/massage seats are package options, and electric rear side-window shades come with the Executive package for 2022.
5Cost of OwnershipThe X7's lowest-graded category.0.00F
The 2022 X7 xDrive40i is the last pre-facelift model year (the LCI entered production July 2022 as a 2023). It started at $74,900 plus $995 destination, unchanged from 2021 and far above the SUV band ceiling of $65,000.
The xDrive40i is the volume trim. As typically equipped (Premium Package, Driving Assistance Professional, metallic paint, wheel upgrade) it lands around $82,000–$86,000, well above the SUV band ceiling.
On a new-car basis the G07 X7 runs about $11,000 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, in line with Edmunds' new-car figure for the same generation. That is above the SUV band ceiling of $9,500.
CarEdge projects the X7 loses about 63% over five years, and names the 2022 model year its best-value used X7, meaning most of its depreciation is already taken. About 41% retained is a realistic five-year figure, near the SUV band floor.
BMW's New Vehicle Limited Warranty runs 4 years / 50,000 miles. That is standard German-luxury coverage, behind Genesis and Lincoln at 5 years / 60,000 miles.
BMW has no separate long-term powertrain warranty; the drivetrain is covered only by the 4 yr / 50k basic warranty. That falls below the 5-year band floor.
Every new 2022 BMW includes BMW Ultimate Care: scheduled maintenance (oil/filter, brake fluid, cabin/engine filters, plugs) for 3 years / 36,000 miles, plus 4 yr / unlimited-mile roadside assistance and a ConnectedDrive trial. That is a real but short included-maintenance window that does not cover wear items.
$83,500 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (41% retained, or about $34,235) leaves about $49,265 in depreciation. Add the projected $11,000 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $60,265 in total.
6Reliability & QualityOne of the X7's strongest categories.2.85B-
The sources disagree. Consumer Reports rates the 2022 X7 less reliable than other 2022 models (3/5), while J.D. Power puts it at 77/100, 'Average', on Quality & Reliability. As the fourth and final year of the pre-facelift first generation it is a mature carry-over, with the 2023 LCI's new electronics still to come, so it sits in the middle of the mixed-signals band, a touch above the 2021.
BMW has sat in the upper-middle of recent Consumer Reports brand reliability rankings and near the industry average in J.D. Power's Vehicle Dependability Study: well ahead of Land Rover and Mercedes-Benz, but behind Lexus, Toyota and Mazda.
Only two recall campaigns touch MY2022, the lightest load of any X7 year so far. One is a tiny third-row seat campaign (246 units across 2019–2022). The other is the panoramic-roof campaign shared across BMW's SUV and coupe lines. There is no brake, fire or powertrain campaign, but the generation's wider recall activity keeps it out of the top band.
The volume xDrive40i uses the B58 3.0L turbo inline-six (before the mild-hybrid change) with the ZF 8HP automatic. Both have strong high-mileage reputations. The M50i's 4.4L N63 V8 has a far weaker oil-consumption history, but it is the minority trim.
As BMW's flagship SUV, the X7 gets the brand's richest cabin: standard Vernasca leather (Merino optional), open-pore wood and optional glass controls. It is on par with the Mercedes GLS. The pre-refresh iDrive 7 dual-screen dash looks a little less modern than the 2023 Curved Display.
Built at Spartanburg with tight, consistent assembly. By its fourth model year the line was mature, before the changeover to the LCI. Scattered owner complaints about panoramic-roof and trim rattles keep it below the class benchmarks.
About 345 US BMW centers give dense metro coverage and thinner rural coverage. Service satisfaction is around the luxury average, and BMW Ultimate Care covered scheduled maintenance for 3 years/36k miles.
Parts are easy to get through dealers and the German-car aftermarket, but repairs out of warranty are expensive, and a 2022 has now aged out of its 4-year/50k warranty. The costly items are the two-axle air suspension, the Sky Lounge panoramic roof, 21–22-inch tires and complex electronics.
7Technology & InfotainmentThe X7's best-graded category.3.17B
The pre-facelift X7 uses a 12.3-in center display running iDrive 7; the 14.9-in curved display arrived only with the 2023 facelift. During the semiconductor shortage, many 2022 builds shipped with the display's touch function deleted, controlled by the iDrive knob and voice only.
iDrive 7 is quick and logical, with a rotary controller, voice and physical climate buttons, and reviewers rank it among the better luxury systems. On many 2022 cars the touch input was deleted because of the chip shortage, which leaves the controller as the main input.
Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, and Enhanced Bluetooth is newly standard for 2022.
BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant ('Hey BMW') handles natural speech, and native navigation with live traffic is standard.
The base HiFi system is decent. For 2022 BMW pulled the Harman Kardon system from the Premium and Executive packages amid the chip shortage, which limits premium audio on the volume xDrive40i.
A 12.3-in fully digital Live Cockpit Professional cluster is standard. It is crisp, but less configurable than some rivals'.
Cars on BMW Operating System 7 receive Remote Software Upgrades over the air, covering infotainment and some vehicle functions. Few new features were added this way.
The My BMW app offers remote lock, climate, locate and remote start, and BMW Digital Key works on supported iPhones.
There are USB-C ports in the front and second row plus 12V outlets, but wireless phone charging was removed for 2022 and third-row device power is thin.
Comfort Access keyless entry, the power split tailgate and remote start are standard, and phone-as-key is available on compatible iPhones.
Rear camera, sensors and Surround View are available. The chip-shortage delete that removed touch function on affected 2022 builds also removed the semi-automated Parking Assistant.
A large full-color head-up display is available, but on the xDrive40i only in the Premium/Executive packages. It is standard on the M50i.
8Use-Case FitMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.23C
Large rear doors, the power-sliding second row and seven seats make family logistics easy. The third row and the cargo space behind it are tighter than in truck-based rivals.
Active Driving Assistant is standard, but neither NHTSA nor IIHS crash-tested the 2022 X7, and adaptive cruise with lane centering costs extra.
The plush air ride, quiet cabin and four-zone climate suit long family trips. There is no rear-seat entertainment, wireless charging was dropped for 2022, and luggage space with all seats up is modest.
The smooth mild-hybrid six, excellent ride and quiet cabin make it relaxed in traffic. Its size is the main annoyance.
At 21 mpg combined on premium fuel it is an expensive commuter, though that is typical for a full-size luxury SUV.
A roughly 203-inch three-row SUV with a ~43-ft turning circle is cumbersome in town. Integral Active Steering was dropped as a 40i option for 2022, and many builds lost the automated Parking Assistant to the chip shortage.
The 7,500-lb tow rating is strong for a unibody luxury SUV, but this is a luxury hauler rather than a work tool.
The luxury-oriented cabin, air suspension and complex electronics make it poorly suited to hard work duty.
A trailer hitch and cargo tie-downs are available, but there is no onboard AC power and no work-oriented upfit ecosystem.
Highway comfort and quiet are excellent, and the optional Driving Assistance Professional is capable. Range of about 460 miles is adequate.
Standard xDrive AWD, adjustable air-suspension ride height and 7,500-lb towing handle gravel roads and campers, but there are no lockers, no low range and no AC outlets.
Power-folding second and third rows, the split tailgate, roof rails and 90.4 cu ft of maximum cargo space make it flexible, but space behind the third row is limited.

Body control is impressive for its size, but the Dynamic Handling package (active roll stabilization) and standalone Integral Active Steering were dropped from the 2022 xDrive40i, which feels its bulk when pushed.
The steering is accurate and well weighted but gives little feedback.
The brakes are strong and progressive for a heavy three-row SUV, though the xDrive40i stops in a longer distance than the M50i.
The 335-hp turbo inline-six and ZF eight-speed are silky, and 48V mild-hybrid assist smooths auto stop/start.
The inline-six is refined and well isolated, with a pleasant note under load.
The turning circle is wide, typical of a full-size SUV. Integral Active Steering, which would tighten it, was no longer offered as a standalone 40i option for 2022.
The driving position is commanding and highly adjustable, with memory seats and physical climate and audio controls. The rear pillars are bulky, and touch input was deleted on many 2022 builds.
It is quick and composed for a three-row luxury SUV, but the xDrive40i is more luxurious than engaging, and the M50i is the enthusiast pick. Without the Dynamic Handling package in 2022 there is less to sharpen the 40i.

The 2022 xDrive40i comes standard with the 335-hp mild-hybrid turbo six, two-axle air suspension, dual 12.3-inch Live Cockpit displays, a panoramic roof, Vernasca leather, a power tailgate, heated front seats and wireless CarPlay. It's competitive for the class, but ventilated/massaging seats, Driving Assistance Professional and premium audio cost extra.
At $75,895 delivered, the xDrive40i undercut the 2022 Mercedes GLS 450 (~$78k) and the new Lexus LX 600 (~$88k) and roughly matched the Escalade, with air suspension standard. That's fair-to-good value for a flagship three-row, though option pricing climbs quickly.
There are three well-spaced trims: xDrive40i (~$76k), M50i (~$101k) and Alpina XB7 (~$142k). BMW Individual paint/trim, the Premium, Luxury Seating and Driving Assistance packages, and a 6- or 7-seat layout add flexibility. All trims are AWD and gas-only.
In its fourth model year the X7 was an established, steady seller in the full-size luxury SUV niche, at roughly 20,000+ units a year in the US. That is comparable to the Mercedes GLS but behind the Cadillac Escalade family, and chip-shortage supply constrained 2022 deliveries.
BMW is one of the most aspirational luxury brands, and the X7 is its flagship SUV with strong status appeal and a loyal owner base. The oversized kidney grille is the main image detractor.
The 2022 model year sold through the peak of the semiconductor shortage, when luxury inventory was at its tightest and many units sold at or near MSRP. BMW Financial Services lease support was modest, and dealer discounting on the X7 was rare.
2022 is the final pre-facelift year of the G07 X7, which launched for 2019. A substantial LCI (split headlights, curved iDrive 8 display, MHEV across the range) was unveiled in April 2022 and entered production that July as a 2023 model, so 2022 buyers got the outgoing look and interior months before a major update.
Reviewers praised the 2022 X7's quiet, spacious cabin, smooth inline-six, strong M50i V8 and composed air-suspension ride. It usually trailed the Mercedes GLS in comparisons, the grille drew criticism, and it won no major awards.
