The verdict
A mixed-report compact luxury suv, strong on reliability and held back by performance.
The 2019 Lexus NX 300h is a used compact luxury SUV bought for its running costs and its record, not for the way it drives. It carries an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ and NHTSA five stars, won its J.D. Power dependability class for 2019 model-year cars, returns an EPA 31 MPG combined on regular gas with all-wheel drive standard, and held roughly 66% of its $39,860 sticker after five years. The price of that is real: 194 combined horsepower and 8.8 seconds to 60 mph, only 16.8 cu ft of cargo space behind the rear seat, and a console touchpad interface Edmunds called close to the worst on the market. Two 2019-specific catches matter when you shop — the IIHS award only covers cars built after January 2019, and standard Apple CarPlay only cars built after October 1, 2018.
Jump to scoresStrengths
- Dependability backed by owner data, not a forecast
- Five-star crash record with the driver aids standard
- The cheapest luxury compact SUV of its year to own
What holds it back
- Genuinely slow, and not remotely fun
- The smallest cargo hold in the class
- The touchpad infotainment is the car's worst feature

Detailed scoring by subject
1Performance & PowertrainThe NX's lowest-graded category.0.00F
2019 is a carry-over powertrain year in the first-generation NX — the 2.5L Atkinson four plus front and rear motor-generators still make 194 combined system hp, near the floor of an SUV band that runs to 550 hp and 41 hp adrift of the turbo NX 300 sold beside it.
Lexus publishes no combined system torque figure for the 300h, so US spec listings carry the 2AR-FXE gas engine's 152 lb-ft — thin for a crossover of this weight and 106 lb-ft behind the NX 300 turbo in the same showroom.
Instrumented at 8.8 seconds, the hybrid sits at the slow end of the SUV band — the arithmetic of 194 hp in a compact luxury crossover — and 2019 brought no powertrain change to move it.
The power-split hybrid has no turbo lag and hands off between electric and gas drive without a seam, and it is genuinely quiet in town, but reviewers of the 2019 car fault a soft initial response and a coarse note when the 2.5L is worked hard.
The planetary e-CVT has no discrete ratios to hunt between and disappears at part throttle, but it flares revs ahead of the car gathering speed — the familiar disconnect between engine note and road speed rather than a shift-quality fault.
The hybrid is rated 500 lbs under the gas NX 300 and sits just above the floor of the SUV band — a small utility or jet-ski trailer and nothing past it.
Every US NX 300h is all-wheel drive — Lexus drives the rear axle with a dedicated electric motor rather than a propshaft, so there is nothing to option and no front-drive hybrid sold here. Operation is on-demand and basic: no low range, no locking differentials, no terrain-mode suite.
A unibody crossover with 6.7 inches of clearance on road tires, no skid plates, no locker, no crawl control and no off-road grade anywhere in the 2019 NX range. The electric rear axle handles a wet ramp or an unplowed driveway, and that is the entire brief.
Two distinct powertrains for 2019 — the 235 hp 2.0L turbo and this full hybrid — covering mainstream needs with an electrified option, but a narrower spread than the NX 250/350/350h/450h+ range the second generation brought in 2022.
2Efficiency & RangeOne of the NX's strongest categories.3.07B
EPA rates the 2019 NX 300h AWD at 31 MPG combined — a 7 MPG lead over the all-wheel-drive NX 300 sold beside it, but graded against other hybrids rather than the fleet it is only mid-pack, and 8 MPG behind the NX 350h that replaced it in 2022.
City is where the power-split hybrid earns its keep — electric launch and regenerative braking put it 11 MPG clear of the turbo NX 300 — though 33 MPG is modest beside the 40-plus city figures later hybrid crossovers post.
Highway trails city by 3 MPG — the usual hybrid inversion, since there is little braking energy to recover at speed — and it gives up the advantage over the gas NX, which is rated the same 28 MPG highway as the turbo car comes within 2 MPG of.
A 14.8-gallon tank caps total range at 459 miles — respectable in absolute terms but short for a hybrid, where a bigger tank on a comparable rating routinely clears 550 miles.
EPA puts annual fuel cost at $2,000 — mid-band for a hybrid, and the headline figure understates the gap to its own stablemate, because this is $2,000 of regular where the NX 300 burns $3,250 of premium.
The NX 300h runs on regular 87-octane with nothing to plug in and no fuel-grade penalty — a genuine ownership advantage over the premium-rated turbo NX 300 beside it and over the premium-rated NX 350h that succeeded it.
3SafetyOne of the NX's strongest categories.2.88B-
NHTSA rated the 2019 NX 300h AWD 5 stars overall, with 4 stars frontal, 5 stars side and 4 stars rollover — 16% rollover risk with no tip in the dynamic test, the top of the SUV band.
The 2019 NX is an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ with Good in all six crashworthiness tests and Good headlights on both variants, but the award carries a build-date qualifier: the Good passenger-side small overlap result only applies to cars built after January 2019, when Lexus added structural reinforcement on that side. Early-build 2019 cars are the same nameplate with unverified passenger-side protection, which is what holds this below the 2020 car's unqualified award.
Lexus Safety System+ is standard on every 2019 NX — pre-collision with daytime pedestrian detection, All-Speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, lane departure alert with steering assist and intelligent high beams — but two of the five features this item asks about are missing from the standard sheet: blind spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert is an option bundled into the Comfort/Premium packages, and there is no lane centering at all in the 2019 suite.
IIHS rates the standard pre-collision system Superior for front crash prevention, avoiding the collision outright in both the 12 and 25 mph vehicle-to-vehicle runs. The system detects pedestrians in daylight but carries no IIHS vehicle-to-pedestrian rating for 2019 — the NX only picked one up on the 2020 sheet — and low-light pedestrian detection came with LSS+ 2.0 a year later, so the night case is both weaker and untested.
Blind spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert is optional on the 2019 NX 300h, packaged rather than standalone on the volume configuration, and it is alert-only — no braking intervention, no safe-exit warning. The hardware works well by reviewer accounts, but reviewers also treat the option box as close to mandatory given how little the driver can see over their shoulder.
The 2019 NX has lane departure alert with steering assist and nothing more — a corrective nudge back off a lane marking, not lane centering. Lane Tracing Assist, the feature that actually holds the car in the middle of the lane, is one of the two headline additions Lexus made for 2020, so there is no continuous centering to judge here at any trim.
All-Speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control is standard and works the full 0–110 mph range on the hybrid, including down to a stop, which is the hard part and the reason this scores above a basic system. What it cannot do is combine into a highway assist: with no lane tracing for 2019, the driver still steers every mile, and the same-generation radar system is a capable rather than polished one — it hunts speed over rises and dips and can mis-target on gentle bends.
No hands-free highway driving is offered on the 2019 NX at any trim, and the car has no lane centering to build one on. Lexus Teammate arrived three model years later and only on the LS.
Both 2019 NX headlight variants rate Good at IIHS — the base static LED projectors and the optional curve-adaptive triple-beam units — so there is no bad-headlight trim to avoid, and automatic high beams are standard on every car as part of LSS+. That was unusual enough in 2019 that IIHS called it out in the award announcement.
The fast rear roofline and heavy rear pillars leave a large over-the-shoulder blind zone, and the equipment that would compensate — blind spot monitor, rear cross-traffic alert, panoramic view monitor — is all optional rather than standard, so the volume car is left with the reversing camera. Forward sightlines from the driver's seat are unobjectionable.
IIHS rates LATCH ease of use Acceptable — the anchors are usable but sit buried enough to need digging for. Two full lower-anchor positions in a compact luxury SUV bench with roughly 36 inches of rear legroom means a rear-facing seat eats into the front passenger's space and three across is not realistic.
4Space & ComfortOne of the NX's weakest categories.0.96F
The 2019 NX 300h is a strictly two-row, five-passenger compact luxury crossover on every trim — no third row or six/seven-seat configuration was ever offered on the first-generation NX.
38.2 in of front headroom is mid-pack for the SUV band and unchanged for 2019 — a carry-over dimension within the 2015–2021 generation — with the optional moonroof costing roughly an inch.
42.8 in of front legroom is generous for a compact luxury crossover and one of the NX's genuine packaging strengths — the front seats travel far enough back for tall drivers despite the short 104.7-in wheelbase.
38.1 in of second-row headroom is respectable for the segment and effectively level with the front row — the NX's raked tailgate costs cargo height rather than rear passenger headroom.
36.1 in of second-row legroom is mid-pack for a compact luxury SUV — fine for two adults, tight for three abreast — and the reclining rear seatback does more for perceived space than the number suggests.
The 2019 NX has no third row in any configuration — buyers needing seven seats moved up to the RX 350L. Scored in the low band as the framework requires for two-row SUVs rather than omitted.
16.8 cu ft behind the second row is among the smallest holds in the compact luxury SUV class — the hybrid battery costs roughly a cubic foot against the gas NX 300, compounding an already tight measurement — and it sits below the floor of the SUV normalization band.
53.7 cu ft maximum trails nearly every compact SUV rival — several mainstream compacts of the same year clear 70 cu ft — so the NX 300h is a poor fit for bulky loads even with the seats down.
Everyday storage is competent but unremarkable: a covered console with a charging tray over a cubby holding the USB ports and 12V outlet, usable door bins and a fold-flat rear bench — but no underfloor cargo tricks, no onboard AC power and nothing at all for second-row passengers.
Front seats are well-padded with robust bolsters and driver's lumbar adjustment, and the reclining rear bench is genuinely comfortable for two adults — reviewers single out seat comfort as an NX strength — but heating and ventilation are package-gated rather than standard.
MacPherson-strut front and double-wishbone rear suspension gives a smooth, well-damped ride that absorbs sharp and long-wave bumps alike; only the F SPORT's firmer tune introduces harshness, and that trim is not offered on the hybrid at all.
Road noise is essentially absent at highway speed and the hybrid can cruise on electric drive in town, but the eCVT pins the 2.5-liter Atkinson four at high revs under acceleration and the resulting drone is what keeps it short of the class benchmarks.
Dual-zone automatic climate control with an interior air filter is standard on every 2019 NX and heated/ventilated front seats, a heated wheel, power-folding and -reclining rear seatbacks and remote climate start via Enform are all available — but the comfort kit is package-gated (ventilated seats need the Comfort Package, the heated wheel the Luxury Package) and rear passengers get no climate controls, heating or power of their own.
5Cost of OwnershipGrades above the middle of the scale.2.70B-
The front-drive turbo NX 300 sets the nameplate's 2019 floor just over $37,500 with destination, several thousand below every German rival's base car. The NX 300h the scorecard describes costs $2,350 more because it is sold only as an AWD hybrid.
For 2019 the hybrid was one model rather than a trim ladder, so the volume configuration is the base NX 300h plus the option packages most buyers added — blind spot monitor and heated/ventilated seats, moonroof, navigation — which lands a typical sticker around $42,000, roughly $5,000–6,000 under a comparably equipped X3 or Q5. It is an estimate of a typical build rather than a single published trim price, hence MEDIUM.
Industry estimates for this nameplate disagree by a factor of four, so the figure is a mid-band estimate that credits genuinely low repair incidence while still pricing luxury-dealer labor. It sits marginally under the 2020 car's estimate because this is a 2019-dollar vehicle, and the hybrid drivetrain's regenerative braking and absence of a conventional starter/alternator cut the wear items that dominate the first five years.
A 2019 NX 300h that delivered near $39,860 was still worth roughly $26,000 five years on, which KBB places in the top 10% for depreciation among all 2019 SUVs. The caveat is real: the 2019 model year's five-year mark fell in 2024, on the back of the pandemic used-car inflation, so the figure records what this car actually did rather than a normal-market projection — hence MEDIUM rather than HIGH.
Lexus's 4-year/50,000-mile basic coverage was precisely the luxury-segment norm for 2019 — the same terms BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi and Acura offered — so it neither helps nor hurts the NX against its direct rivals.
Six years/70,000 miles beats the German rivals' 4/50 but sits well short of the 10-year plans anchoring the top of this band. For the scored hybrid the number buyers actually care about is the battery term, and 2019 is the last model year before Lexus's extension: MY2019 hybrids carry 8 years/100,000 miles on the traction battery, where a MY2020 NX 300h gets 10 years/150,000 miles nationwide.
Lexus covered only the first two scheduled services — one year or 10,000 miles — which was short next to BMW's 3-year/36,000-mile plan, but paired it with four years of unlimited-mileage roadside assistance, a 10-year complimentary Enform Service Connect trial (new with MY2018) and a year of Enform Wi-Fi data. Solid rather than generous, and a shade below the 2020 car, whose Safety Connect trial was three years as sold against 2019's one.
$42,000 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (66% retained, or about $27,720) leaves about $14,280 in depreciation. Add the projected $5,000 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $19,280 in total.
6Reliability & QualityThe NX's best-graded category.3.83A
Seven years on, this model year is judged on realized owner-survey data rather than a forecast, and that data is strong: the 2019 NX took the Compact Premium SUV award in the J.D. Power 2022 Vehicle Dependability Study — the study that surveyed 2019 owners at the three-year mark — and Consumer Reports rates the 2019 NX Hybrid much more reliable than other cars of its model year. Held below the top band because the weak spot is consistent across sources: CR's 2019 hybrid owners flag in-car electronics (infotainment, GPS, phone pairing, cameras, head-up display) and scattered electrical accessories, and J.D. Power's own Quality & Reliability read for the 2019 NX stops at 85/100 rather than the high 80s the 2020 car earns.
Lexus is a dependability benchmark across the window that matters to a 2019 car, but not quite the outright leader it is on either side of it: in the 2022 VDS — the study of 2019 model-year vehicles — Lexus posted 159 PP100 against a 204 PP100 premium-brand average, second among premium brands behind Genesis at 155 and ahead of Porsche, Cadillac and Lincoln, rather than ranking highest overall as it did with 2016 and 2020 model-year cars. The 2019 Initial Quality Study told a similar story, with Lexus above the 93 PP100 industry average but well outside the Genesis/Kia/Hyundai leading group. Consumer Reports' long-term brand data remains the strongest signal in the brand's favour.
The scored configuration is clean: NHTSA returns zero recall campaigns for the 2019 NX300h and only eight owner complaints in seven years on the road, none of them a pattern. The two campaigns that do touch the 2019 NX are both the Denso low-pressure fuel-pump defect and both name the NX300 — the turbo gas car — which uses a different fuel system; the hybrid's port-injected 2AR-FXE is excluded from each. That distinction is real but it does cost the model year some credit, because the gas sibling's record is genuinely busy (36 complaints, half of them fuel-system) and the second campaign landed as late as January 2025, and because the nameplate carries a long routine TSB list, mostly infotainment and connectivity software rather than mechanical defects.
The NX 300h pairs Toyota's 2.5-litre 2AR-FXE Atkinson four with the power-split THS-II transaxle, a nickel-metal-hydride pack and a separate rear motor for AWD-i — naturally aspirated, no turbo, no belt, no clutch pack, and the same architecture that has run a decade-plus at high mileage in Camry and RAV4 hybrid fleets. Scored a notch under the 2020 car for one concrete reason rather than a reputational one: 2019 is the last model year before Lexus extended hybrid-battery coverage, so a 2019 NX 300h carries 8 years/100,000 miles on the traction battery nationwide (10/150,000 only in CARB states) where a 2020 gets 10/150,000 everywhere, and the out-of-pocket exposure on an ageing NiMH pack therefore arrives sooner.
This is the category's weak link. The cabin is quiet, carefully assembled and stylish, and owners like the switchgear feel, but by 2019 the AZ10 interior was five years old and reviewers judged its touchpoint materials short of a $40,000 luxury SUV — soft-touch upper dash and doors give way to painted silver plastic on the console and unconvincing imitation carbon fibre on the doors, and the NX is placed a step behind the German rivals on perceived quality. The Remote Touch touchpad controlling the non-touch screen was improved with the 2018 refresh but still reads as a mouse-like device reviewers struggle with rather than a premium interface.
Japanese assembly at Toyota Motor Kyushu and Tahara in the fifth year of a mature design gives the NX solid, consistent construction, and owners rate build quality highly. Marked down more than the brand's reputation would suggest because the year-specific evidence is blunt: Edmunds found "uncanny squeaks and rattles" in a brand-new 2019 NX 300h test car, interior trim rattles are the recurring subject of a long-running owner thread for this generation, and Lexus was only modestly above the industry average in the 2019 Initial Quality Study rather than leading it.
Lexus service satisfaction sat at the very top of the luxury field when this car was sold and has stayed near it since, so an owner has had a strong dealer experience across the whole ownership window, backed on a 2019 car by complimentary scheduled maintenance at 6 months/5,000 miles and 12 months/10,000 miles plus four years of unlimited-mileage roadside assistance. A shade under the 2020 car on two counts: 2019 was the year Porsche displaced Lexus at the top of the Customer Service Index, and the 241 US stores are solid rather than dense coverage for a premium brand, so rural owners travel further than a Toyota or Honda buyer would.
The 2AR-FXE engine and THS-II hybrid hardware are shared with Camry and RAV4 hybrids by the million, so wear items are cheap, universally stocked and serviceable by ordinary independent shops, and RepairPal's running-cost data puts the NX300h far below the luxury compact SUV norm — it is among the cheapest Lexus models to keep. This generation also avoids the expensive dealer-only failure points of the AZ20 car that replaced it, leaving the costly pieces limited to the centre display and, eventually, the traction battery — which on a 2019 is covered for 8 years/100,000 miles rather than the 10/150,000 a 2020 gets, the one thing keeping this out of the top band.
7Technology & InfotainmentOne of the NX's weakest categories.0.70F
Every 2019 NX 300h ships with the 8.0-inch color display; the 10.3-inch split-screen unit arrives only with the Navigation Package, so the volume configuration sits near the floor of the SUV band.
Remote Touchpad is the most criticized interface in the class — cursor control is fiddly on the move and the console is cluttered with oddly angled switchgear; the 2018 facelift's touch-capable screen only helps when the driver can reach it, and nothing about the hardware changed for 2019.
2019 is the year Apple CarPlay became standard on the NX, but only on cars built on or after 1 October 2018 — earlier-build 2019 cars need a $199 dealer retrofit — and Android Auto did not arrive until the 2020 model year. Nothing is offered wirelessly on any trim.
Standard navigation is Scout GPS Link — a phone-tethered map on the 8-inch screen — with embedded navigation reserved for the Navigation Package, and voice control is command-word driven rather than natural language. Amazon Alexa through Enform App Suite 2.0 fills part of the gap, but there is no Google Assistant because there is no Android Auto for 2019.
The 2019 NX tops out at a 10-speaker Lexus Premium system bundled with navigation — clean but unremarkable, and well short of what rivals offered. Mark Levinson was not available on the NX at all until the 2020 model year, so the hybrid's best 2019 audio is a mainstream-grade system in a luxury car.
The 2019 NX 300h keeps conventional analog gauges flanking a small color multi-information display; the LFA-style moving-ring TFT meter is an F SPORT item, and there is no F SPORT hybrid — so no NX 300h buyer can get anything approaching a configurable digital cluster.
This pre-Lexus-Interface generation has no whole-vehicle over-the-air updating; the only remote refresh is Enform Dynamic Navigation map and POI data, and that requires the optional navigation head unit.
Lexus Enform Remote covers the core set — remote lock/unlock, engine and climate start, vehicle locator, alarm and fuel level — but the complimentary term is only one year before it becomes a paid subscription, and there is no digital key on the first-generation NX.
Device power is thin even by 2019 standards: front USB-A ports plus a 12V outlet in the console cubby, no USB-C anywhere, no household outlet, and nothing at all for second-row passengers — the brochure's option sheet does not even list a wireless charging pad for the US car.
SmartAccess proximity entry with push-button start is standard on every 2019 NX and a kick-sensor Touch-Free Power Rear Door is available, but remote start lives behind the Enform app subscription rather than the key fob, and there is no phone-as-key.
A backup camera is standard and both a Panoramic View Monitor and Intuitive Parking Assist with automatic braking are on the option sheet, but resolution and graphics are a generation behind newer rivals, both are extra-cost on the volume car, and there is no automated parking.
No head-up display can be ordered on a 2019 NX 300h. It appears nowhere in the US brochure's standard equipment, individual options or Comfort/Premium/Luxury/Navigation packages, and the aggregator listings that do claim a 2019 NX HUD tie it to the F SPORT — a trim the hybrid is not offered in — so either reading leaves this car without one.
8Use-Case FitMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.73C-
Wide-opening rear doors, a car-like step-in height and a reclining bench make day-to-day child loading straightforward, but IIHS rates the LATCH hardware only Acceptable, there are two lower-anchor positions in 36.1 in of rear legroom, and 16.8 cu ft behind the second row barely swallows a full-size stroller plus a grocery run.
The crash credentials are the best a family could ask for in 2019 — IIHS Top Safety Pick+ with Good in all six tests and Good headlights on both variants, NHTSA five stars overall — and Lexus Safety System+ is standard on the entry car families actually buy; the gaps are that the award only covers cars built after January 2019, blind-spot monitoring costs extra, and the pre-2.0 suite has no lane tracing and only daytime pedestrian detection.
A quiet, well-damped cabin and a reclining rear seat make the NX a pleasant four-up tourer, but rear passengers get no climate controls, no charging ports and no entertainment, and luggage space with all seats occupied is among the smallest in the class.
Lexus Hybrid Drive is at its best in traffic — silent electric creep, seamless stop/start, no gearchange shunt — and standard All-Speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control works down to a stop, which is the hard part of commuting; against it, the 2019 suite has no lane tracing to share the steering load and the Remote Touchpad is a daily irritation.
EPA 33/30/31 mpg from a standard-AWD luxury crossover running regular unleaded is an unusually cheap per-mile proposition for the segment — 11 mpg better in town than the turbocharged NX 300, which asks for premium — and the $2,000/yr EPA fuel bill is $1,250 below the gas car's.
At 182.7 in long with a 37.4-ft curb-to-curb circle the NX threads city streets and parking garages easily, and the available Panoramic View Monitor plus Intuitive Parking Assist cover the thick rear pillars — but both are extra-cost, so the volume car parks on a backup camera alone.
A 1,500-lb tow rating — 500 lbs under the gas NX 300 — 53.7 cu ft of maximum cargo and a 194-hp powertrain tuned for economy rather than load make this a non-starter for real work duty; a small utility trailer is the ceiling.
The Toyota hybrid mechanicals underneath are among the most durable powertrains sold and the platform is RAV4-derived, but the NuLuxe-and-leather cabin, 18-in low-profile tires and the complete absence of a fleet, work or commercial variant make it a poor tool for abuse.
No onboard AC power, no load floor of consequence, a handful of cargo tie-downs, and an upfit ecosystem that stops at dealer roof crossbars, a cargo mat and a light-duty hitch receiver.
Supportive front seats, a hushed highway cabin and standard all-speed radar cruise make a relaxed mile-eater, and 31 mpg from a 14.8-gal tank gives an EPA 459-mile range between stops; the eCVT drone under acceleration and the lack of any lane-centering aid for 2019 are what hold it below the tourers of the class.
Standard electric-rear-axle AWD gives useful traction on wet gravel and snow and roof rails are standard, but 6.7 in of ground clearance, road-biased tires, a 1,500-lb tow limit, a 176-lb roof rating and no terrain modes or underbody protection keep the NX 300h on the maintained-trail side of adventure.
The 60/40 bench folds flat — power-folding and -reclining is on the option sheet — and roof rails with accessory crossbars take bikes or a box, but 16.8 cu ft up and 53.7 cu ft down is class-trailing and the tapered tailgate limits bulky boxes.
9Driving ExperienceMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.02C
MacPherson-strut front and double-wishbone rear suspension keeps the 4,180-lb hybrid tidy and predictable on a winding road, but roll is evident, there is no appetite for pace, and the 2019 car does without the Active Cornering Assist that became standard a year later — the F SPORT suspension and Adaptive Variable Suspension are gas-only.
The electric power steering is accurate and consistently weighted on-center, which makes the NX easy to place in traffic, but it filters out almost all road texture — reviewers consistently call out the absence of feedback.
Stopping power is adequate and the regenerative-to-friction handover is better blended than most hybrids of this era, but the pedal is soft and slightly numb near the top of its travel and stopping distances are unremarkable for the class.
Lexus Hybrid Drive is impeccably calibrated at low speed — the engine starts and stops without a shudder, there is no gearchange shunt and the electric rear axle engages invisibly; the 194-hp system's leisurely response under hard throttle is what holds the score down.
In electric or light-throttle running the NX 300h is near-silent, but the eCVT pins the four-cylinder at high revs under acceleration and the resulting drone is the single most-cited refinement complaint about this powertrain.
A 37.4-ft curb-to-curb circle is tidy for a compact SUV and makes parking-garage and three-point-turn work easy; the figure is shared by the NX 300 and NX 300h and unchanged across the generation.
A commanding but car-like seating position and good forward sightlines make the driver's office easy to settle into, but the volume 2019 car gets only a manual tilt/telescoping column — power adjustment is buried in the Premium Package and did not become standard until 2020 — and the console is a clutter of oddly angled switches around a touchpad that demands eyes off the road.
The NX 300h is tuned as a serene, efficient commuter: 8.8 seconds to 60 mph, numb steering and a droning eCVT leave nothing to seek out a long way home for — and unlike the gas NX there is no F SPORT version to sharpen it.
10Value & Market PositionMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.47C+
2019 finally made Apple CarPlay standard on the NX (on cars built after October 1, 2018) alongside the already-standard Lexus Safety System+, dual-zone climate, 10-way power driver's seat, LED lighting and — on the hybrid specifically — standard AWD, Enform Wi-Fi and a power-adjustable steering column, all for several thousand less than a German base car. It sits below the 2020 car because too much of the segment's expected content was still package-locked: blind spot monitor, navigation, power liftgate, moonroof, parking sensors and heated/ventilated seats were all extras, and this year's safety suite is LSS+ 1.0 without the lane tracing and road sign assist 2020 made standard.
The money argument is about running costs and it is a strong one: KBB named the 2019 NX the lowest-cost-to-own luxury compact SUV, the 300h's 31 mpg combined was unmatched in the class, and the car sits in the top 10% of 2019 SUVs for value retention. What the money does not buy is pace, space or usability — 194 combined horsepower makes it the slowest thing in the segment, cargo room trails rivals, and reviewers were united in calling the Remote Touchpad infotainment distracting to use.
The 2019 lineup is narrower than the year that followed it: the turbo NX 300 came in base and F SPORT only — no Luxury grade yet — in front- or all-wheel drive, plus a 1,000-unit F SPORT Black Line special edition, spanning roughly $37,500 to $41,150 with destination. The scored hybrid is the thinnest part of it: a single NX 300h model, AWD only, no F SPORT, with the whole range of equipment reached through option packages rather than trims.
The NX sold 58,715 units in the US in calendar 2019 — at or near the top of the compact luxury SUV class and Lexus's second-best seller behind the RX, ahead of the ES. Five model years into a generation that is an unusually durable demand curve; it misses the top band only because the trajectory was mildly negative, down 5.4% from 2018's peak.
Lexus in 2019 carried the strongest dependability and cost-of-ownership reputation of any luxury marque — KBB's Best Luxury Brand for 5-year cost to own that year — plus a famously loyal owner base, and the NX trades directly on that equity. It sits below the aspirational top band because Lexus sells reliability and refinement rather than the performance or design halo BMW, Porsche and Genesis bring to this segment.
2019 was a conventional pre-pandemic market: Lexus Financial Services ran subvented leases with meaningful lease cash on the NX — $2,000 as a capitalized cost reduction on an advertised NX 300 AWD — plus regular low-APR retail finance programs, so a buyer could reliably transact under sticker without the model showing any distress. Not a top-band score because the NX was selling well and never needed the deep national rebates slower rivals leaned on.
2019 is the fifth model year of the first-generation AZ10 NX and the first full year after its mid-life facelift, which arrived for 2018 — so the sheetmetal, suspension tuning and safety suite are current-ish while the bones are not. The platform, the six-speed automatic in the gas car, the 2.5-liter hybrid system and the non-touch display with Remote Touchpad are all mid-2010s engineering, which is why 2019 reviews kept flagging the interface, and the second-generation car was still three model years out.
The 2019 NX collected two genuine honors — an IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK+ and KBB's Lowest 5-Year Cost to Own award for the class — and reviewers respected its ride, quietness, economy and build, with U.S. News at 8.0/10 and Edmunds naming the 300h a best-of pick among luxury hybrid SUVs. It was still never the outright pick of a comparison test: the underpowered hybrid drivetrain, tight cargo hold and near-universally disliked touchpad interface kept it out of the class-winner conversation.
