The verdict
A mixed-report compact luxury suv, strong on efficiency and held back by performance.
The 2024 Lexus NX 350h is the sensible-shoes pick of the compact luxury SUV class: 39 MPG combined, a Top Safety Pick+ crash record, Lexus's number-one-in-the-industry dependability record, and the best resale value in the segment at roughly 60% retained after five years. It was America's best-selling compact luxury SUV in 2024 for good reason — $44,615 buys standard all-wheel drive, standard Lexus Safety System+ 3.0 and a hybrid that costs about $1,250 a year less to fuel than the gas NX 350. The trade is space and speed: 22.7 cubic feet of cargo room is small-hatchback territory, 36.1 inches of rear legroom is tight, and 7.2 seconds to 60 with a droning CVT will not thrill anyone. Buy it for the next ten years of low-stress ownership, not for the next weekend.
Jump to scoresStrengths
- Lexus reliability, backed by actual survey data
- Safety gear that's standard on the cheapest car on the lot
- 39 MPG in a luxury SUV, and 566 miles between fill-ups
What holds it back
- Cargo space is the deal-breaker for a lot of shoppers
- Tight inside for a $47,000 vehicle
- Slow, and noisy when you ask for speed

Detailed scoring by subject
1Performance & PowertrainThe NX's lowest-graded category.0.75F
Scored on the NX 350h, the volume hybrid configuration — 240 combined system horsepower sits mid-pack in the 2024 NX range and is modest against the turbocharged compact-luxury field. 2024 is a carry-over year for the second-generation (AZ20) NX, so output is unchanged from 2023.
Lexus publishes engine torque only for the power-split 350h, as is standard for this hybrid architecture, so the 179 lb-ft engine peak is the scored value and the motor contribution is noted — the same convention this dataset applies to the UX, CR-V and the 2026 NX. On paper this trails the ~280–320 lb-ft turbo torque of the X3, GLC, Q5 and RDX, though the electric motors mask much of the gap off the line.
Lexus quotes 7.2 seconds for the NX 350h — adequate rather than quick, and roughly a second behind the turbocharged German compacts in this segment. Within the 2024 NX range it is the middle rung, quicker than the NX 250 but well short of the 6.0-second PHEV.
Under light throttle the hybrid is quiet and linear, with instant motor torque giving the NX more initial scoot than 240 hp suggests, and reviewers consistently praise its confidence getting up to speed. It sits mid-band because press hard and the Atkinson four revs high and turns coarse — 2024 reviews are notably blunter about this than about earlier Lexus products, calling the NX 350h noisier and less refined than rivals.
The planetary eCVT never hunts and is genuinely unobtrusive at part throttle — an advantage over the low-speed hesitation of the dual-clutch units in this class. It stays mid-pack for the familiar rubber-band effect: floor it and revs flare and hold in a monotone drone. The gas NX 350's conventional 8-speed automatic is the more decisive unit but is not the scored powertrain.
Every 2024 NX powertrain carries the same modest 2,000-lb rating: the GA-K unibody, not the engine, is the limit. That is the bottom rung of Lexus's own SUV towing ladder and well behind the 3,500–4,850 lb ratings of the GLC, Q5 and X3, though it clears the RDX's 1,500 lbs.
For 2024 all-wheel drive is standard on the NX 350h, NX 350 and NX 450h+ and optional on the NX 250 — it is on or available across the entire range rather than reserved for top trims, and the scored hybrid cannot be bought without it (the FWD 350h only arrived for 2026). It stays out of the top band because operation is basic: the hybrids use a slip-reactive rear electric motor (E-Four) with no low range, locking differentials or terrain-mode selector.
The NX is a pavement crossover on the GA-K unibody shared with the RAV4: ground clearance of roughly 7.7–8.2 inches is ordinary for the class, and there are no skid plates, no locking differentials, no crawl control and no off-road grade — the 2024 grade walk tops out at F SPORT Handling, a suspension package. Its AWD handles snow and gravel and stops there, placing it with the Q5 and GLC rather than the Multi-Terrain-equipped RAV4 trims.
Four genuinely distinct powertrains in 2024, two of them electrified: a 203-hp naturally aspirated 2.5 with an 8-speed automatic, a 275-hp 2.4L turbo, a 240-hp self-charging hybrid and a 304-hp plug-in hybrid with 37 miles of EV range — broader than the 2026 lineup, which drops the NX 250. It stops short of the top of the band only because there is no battery-electric NX (that role falls to the RZ) and no performance F variant.
2Efficiency & RangeThe NX's best-graded category.4.00A+
The NX 350h is the volume electrified configuration and its 39 MPG combined is well clear of compact-luxury-SUV rivals like the X3, GLC and RDX. 2024 is a carry-over year for the AZ20 NX, so the rating is unchanged from 2023.
Series-parallel hybrid operation gives the NX its strongest numbers in stop-and-start driving, nearly doubling the turbocharged NX 350's 21 MPG city.
Highway is the hybrid's weakest EPA cycle, but 37 MPG still leads the compact luxury SUV field among non-plug-in models and holds a 9-MPG margin over the gas NX 350.
EPA publishes 566 miles of total range on the 14.5-gallon tank — a genuine strength against the battery-electric rivals arriving in this segment, and enough for a full day's drive between stops.
EPA's own published annual cost, taken from fueleconomy.gov rather than derived. It reflects the site's current premium-gasoline price assumption of roughly $5.17/gal — the hybrid burns only ~385 gal/yr, so the figure is driven mostly by the octane Lexus recommends, and running the permitted 87-octane regular lowers it materially. Against the rest of the 2024 NX range it is a clear win: the gas NX 350 costs $3,250/yr on the same assumptions.
EPA classifies the NX 350h as 'Premium Gasoline Recommended' — Lexus asks for 91 octane for full output but permits 87-octane regular with slightly reduced performance, the classic recommended-not-required case that caps this at the top of the middle band. The turbocharged NX 350 is the stricter premium ask, while the 450h+ adds cheap Level 1/2 home charging as an alternative energy path.
3SafetyOne of the NX's strongest categories.3.55A-
NHTSA crash-tested the 2024 NX 350h AWD specifically — the scored configuration — but withholds an overall NCAP score because the rollover test was never run. The published subscores are 4 stars frontal (both front seating positions) and 5 stars side, front and rear, barrier and pole; 4.8 is used as the estimate rather than claiming an unpublished 5, and matches the figure carried for the 2026 NX.
The 2024 NX is a Top Safety Pick+ winner with Good in small overlap front (driver and passenger), original moderate overlap, the updated side test and seat belt reminders. It sits below the top of the band because the updated moderate overlap front test — the rear-passenger protection test — returns only Acceptable; Lexus revised the rear belts for 2026 and lifted that result to Good, so 2024 is the weaker of the two years on the one test that distinguishes them.
Lexus Safety System+ 3.0 is standard on all eleven 2024 NX grades — Pre-Collision System with pedestrian detection and intersection/left-turn support, Risk Avoidance Emergency Steer Assist, all-speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control with Curve Speed Management, Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist, Lane Tracing Assist, Proactive Driving Assist and Road Sign Assist — and Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross Traffic Alert is standard too, so none of the core five is trim-locked on the entry car.
The standard system earns Good in both current IIHS front crash prevention tests, and the underlying test data is a clean sweep rather than a marginal pass: collisions avoided against car and motorcycle targets at 31, 37 and 43 mph, and against a crossing child in daylight plus a crossing adult and a parallel adult at night — the nighttime pedestrian work that separates good AEB from adequate AEB.
Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross Traffic Alert is standard on every 2024 grade, and the e-latch doors add a genuinely useful Safe Exit Assist that holds the door shut when it detects a car or cyclist closing from behind. Held out of the top band because the cross-traffic function is alert-oriented (rear automatic braking is optional) and the Panoramic View Monitor arrives only with the Vision package on Premium and above.
Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist and Lane Tracing Assist are standard across the range and hold a lane competently on well-marked highway, but owners of this generation consistently describe centering that gets jerky and falls away with faded markings or wet weather — functional rather than the confident, trusted centering of the best luxury systems.
All-speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control with stop-and-go and Curve Speed Management is standard on every grade and is well reviewed for smooth spacing and clean restarts from a full stop. The combined highway-assist experience stops short of the top band because Lane Tracing Assist is the only lane layer over it and there is no traffic-jam or hands-off mode.
No hands-free highway mode is offered on any 2024 NX grade. Lexus Teammate Advanced Drive depends on lidar hardware the NX does not carry and remained limited to the LS, leaving every NX hands-on only.
IIHS rates every 2024 NX headlamp variant Good — base, Triple Beam package and the F Sport Handling/Luxury curve-adaptive units — so the volume 350h is not stuck with a downgraded lamp, and high-beam assist is fitted across the board. Only the curve-adaptive function is trim-dependent.
The AZ20 body's rising beltline, thick rear pillars and shallow rear glass cut the over-the-shoulder and rearward view, and reviewers note it directly. Large side mirrors and a sharp reversing camera on the big center screen recover much of it, but the two features that would fully compensate — Panoramic View Monitor and the digital rearview mirror — are upper-trim options rather than base equipment.
Lower anchors are the strong part — two sets sitting partially exposed at the seat bight, earning an A in the independent car-seat check and a Good+ ease-of-use rating from IIHS for having extra positions. The rest is mid-band compact-SUV reality: all three top tethers are buried in the carpet and need digging, which cost the forward-facing convertible a grade, and three car seats will not fit across the rear row.
4Space & ComfortOne of the NX's weakest categories.0.93F
The NX is a strictly two-row, five-seat compact crossover — there is no seven-seat option, and no 2024 grade changes the count. That is the segment norm but the bottom of an SUV band that runs to eight.
38.3 inches is the no-sunroof figure, and it is adequate rather than generous for the class. The scored NX 350h Premium includes a power moonroof as standard equipment, so the figure most buyers actually live with is 37.1 inches — near the bottom of the SUV band.
41.0 inches is short of the compact-SUV average and sits low in the band — the AZ20 NX prioritizes a low, cocooned driving position over stretch-out room, and its 105.9-inch wheelbase is modest for the class.
Rear headroom is the strongest of the NX's four interior dimensions — 38.5 inches is above the SUV midpoint, and unusually the roof options cost the second row less than the first (0.4 in with the standard moonroof versus 1.2 in up front).
36.1 inches lands mid-band: enough for two adults on a normal journey, and reviewers call rear passenger space adequate, but it is not one of the roomier compact luxury SUVs and the bench neither slides nor reclines.
There is no third row in any 2024 NX — the nameplate is a two-row compact crossover and Lexus sells the TX and GX for three-row duty. Scored in the low band as the framework requires for a missing third row rather than omitted.
22.7 cubic feet falls below the bottom of the SUV normalization band, which starts at 25 — a real characteristic rather than a data problem, as the compact NX gives up meaningful cargo room to the RAV4 it shares a platform with and to rivals like the X3 and Q5. The hybrid loses nothing to the gas cars, which is the one consolation.
46.9 cubic feet is below the 55-cu-ft floor of the SUV band, so the item scores zero: with the seats down the NX holds roughly what a large hatchback does, and materially less than a RAV4's 69.8 cu ft on the same GA-K architecture.
Competent rather than clever: a usable center console and door bins, and a genuinely handy set of underfloor cargo cubbies made possible by the deletion of the spare tire. Nothing here is a segment innovation, and the cabin's own storage is average for a compact luxury SUV.
Front seats are a strength — supportive, well-cushioned and repeatedly praised for long stints, and the volume Premium grade adds an 8-way power driver's seat with memory plus a power tilt/telescoping column. It stops short of the top band because at least one reviewer could never settle on a driving position, and the rear bench neither reclines nor slides.
Tuned for smoothness and it delivers most of the time — reviewers describe a chill cruiser with composure at speed and no sacrifice of ride even in Sport mode. Large bumps and genuinely rough pavement still register, which keeps it out of the plush-and-controlled top band.
At a cruise the NX is genuinely hushed and reviewers credit Lexus with setting the class standard for quiet interiors. It is held just at the top of the middle band because the quiet is conditional: wind the 2.5-liter Atkinson four out and it turns coarse and loud, and Car and Driver found the car not as quiet inside as the badge implies.
The volume NX 350h Premium arrives with heated AND ventilated front seats, dual-zone climate, a power moonroof and a power back door as standard — strong content for the money. It falls short of the top band on 2024-specific gaps that Lexus closed a year later: the heated steering wheel is a $250 Cold Area Package extra, rear-seat heating is a Luxury-grade item, there is no separate rear climate zone (vents only), and remote pre-conditioning runs through the subscription Remote Connect service.
5Cost of OwnershipOne of the NX's weakest categories.2.00C
For 2024 the entry point is still the naturally aspirated NX 250 — the cheapest way into the compact luxury SUV class by a wide margin, and roughly $4,900 below the 2024 Audi Q5 and $6,500–$7,600 below the BMW X3 and Mercedes GLC. The figure is low for a luxury nameplate but only mid-band against a general SUV scale.
The volume configuration of the scored hybrid is the NX 350h in Premium trim — KBB identifies it as the most popular 2024 NX trim, and it carries the equipment most buyers in this class expect (heated/ventilated front seats, power liftgate, larger wheels) without the Luxury grade's leather-and-Mark-Levinson premium. AWD is the only 350h drivetrain for 2024.
The published estimates diverge by more than 2x: KBB prices scheduled service at Lexus dealer labor rates and lands near $5,100 in maintenance plus roughly $1,100 in repairs, while CarEdge's hybrid-specific model puts the NX 350h's combined 5-year maintenance and repairs at just $2,488 on the strength of very low repair incidence. A figure around $6,100 leans on the dealer-rate view and stays consistent with how the rest of the Lexus fleet is priced in this dataset, a shade under the 2026 NX's $6,400 because the 2024 car is a cheaper vehicle with the same service schedule.
The NX is the strongest value-holder in the luxury compact SUV segment and the hybrid holds up better than the nameplate average, with CarEdge's 350h-specific model landing at 59% retained. Published figures straddle ~53% to ~68% depending on methodology, so ~60% is the defensible middle and matches how the 2026 NX is scored here.
Lexus's 4-year/50,000-mile basic coverage is exactly the luxury-segment norm — the same term BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi and Acura offer — so it neither helps nor hurts against direct rivals.
Six years/70,000 miles beats the German rivals' 4/50 but sits near the bottom of a band anchored by the 10-year plans from Hyundai, Kia and Genesis. On the 350h the meaningful protection is the separate hybrid coverage — 8 years/100,000 miles on hybrid components and 10 years/150,000 miles on the battery, which applies to 2020-and-newer Lexus hybrids.
Lexus covers only the first two scheduled service visits — one year or 10,000 miles — which is short against BMW's 3-year/36,000-mile plan and Genesis's 3-year program, but it is paired with four years of unlimited-mileage roadside assistance and multi-year Lexus Connected Services trials (Safety Connect, Service Connect, Drive Connect). Solid rather than generous, and scored to match the identical program on the UX and the 2026 NX.
$47,665 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (60% retained, or about $28,599) leaves about $19,066 in depreciation. Add the projected $6,100 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $25,166 in total.
6Reliability & QualityOne of the NX's strongest categories.3.76A
The two major predictors split along the powertrain line, and the hybrid is the better half: Consumer Reports rates the 2024 NX only "about average" overall but expects the NX Hybrid to be more reliable than the average new car, and J.D. Power's predicted-reliability figure for the 2024 NX sits at 81/100 — inside its "Great" 81-90 band but at the bottom edge of it. By 2024 the AZ20 is in its third model year with the launch-year software and structural problems behind it, so the read rests on real survey data rather than brand halo; it lands below the 2026 car (85/100 from J.D. Power) because the 2024 build has since accumulated four NHTSA campaigns and an electrical-skewed service-bulletin file.
Lexus is the dependability benchmark in the US and was so throughout the 2024 car's life: highest-ranked brand overall in the J.D. Power 2024 Vehicle Dependability Study at 135 PP100 — a second consecutive outright win — then first again in 2025 (140 PP100 against a 202 PP100 industry average) and 2026. The NX itself took a model-level VDS award in 2024, one of nine for Toyota Motor Corporation. Nothing in the compact luxury SUV segment matches that record; held just short of a perfect read only because Consumer Reports' brand ranking has Lexus a place or two off its own top spot in recent years.
Typical activity with nothing systemic, but the 2024 build has picked up a real file over two and a half years on the road: four NHTSA campaigns reach the model year — two separate rearview-camera problems, a driver-airbag clockspring/steering-column repair campaign, and front head restraints that can release without the lock button — against 29 manufacturer service communications skewed toward electrical systems. The hybrid fares better than the gas car, escaping the fuel-pump and brake-actuator campaigns that hit the NX 250/350 (three recalls versus five). None of it is powertrain, fire or structural, and the generation's one serious defect — the 2022-only missing spot welds at the front shock mounts — was fixed two model years earlier. Scored below the 2026 car, which is still clean, and below the band top because the count is real, recurring in one area (camera/display software) and the deduction should reflect that rather than the brand's reputation.
The scored configuration is the NX 350h: the 2.5L Atkinson-cycle A25A-FXS four with dual motor-generators through a planetary eCVT, 240 combined hp, the same hybrid architecture as the RAV4 Hybrid and one of the most proven high-mileage drivetrains sold in the US. There is no clutch pack, no belt, no turbocharger and no torque converter to wear, regenerative braking spares the friction brakes, and the traction battery carries a 10-year/150,000-mile warranty with no meaningful field failure mode at the pack or transaxle. Short of the top only because this particular GA-K application dates to 2022 rather than the decade-plus record of the ES 300h, and because the 12V auxiliary battery is a recurring owner complaint across recent Lexus hybrids. The lineup's less-proven units — the 2022-vintage T24A-FTS turbo in the NX 350 and the 450h+ plug-in charging hardware — are not what this vehicle is scored on.
Reviewers consistently rate the materials themselves as genuinely good for the money — soft-touch surfaces on the regularly touched areas, NuLuxe or leather, well-damped switchgear — and the 2024 model year adds color-keyed elements to the front and rear door cards and more seamless interior color treatments. What keeps it out of the top band is presentation rather than substance: the cabin is repeatedly described as plain next to the more detailed, elegant interiors of the segment's best, and it reads narrow up front for a $47,000 vehicle.
Assembly is a real strength: the NX is built at Toyota Motor Kyushu's Miyata plant, reviewers report a rattle- and squeak-free structure over broken pavement, and the 2024 car additionally got improved front and rear body rigidity with revised suspension and steering stability. Initial-quality data backs the impression — Lexus finished second among premium brands in the J.D. Power 2024 Initial Quality Study at 173 PP100 against a 194 PP100 industry average, and the premium segment as a whole averaged a much worse 230 PP100.
Service satisfaction was at the very top of the industry over this car's life — Lexus ranked highest among premium brands in the J.D. Power 2024 Customer Service Index for a third consecutive year at 897 against an 866 premium average, and highest in premium SUV service at 898 for a second straight year, ahead of Porsche and Cadillac. Complimentary first-year maintenance and Toyota's parts logistics behind the counter reinforce it. The only real deduction is density: roughly 240-245 US Lexus stores is solid for a premium brand but far thinner than a Toyota or Honda network, so rural owners travel further for warranty work.
The NX sits on the GA-K platform and shares its hybrid hardware with the RAV4, so wear items and mechanical parts are cheap, universally stocked and serviceable by independent shops — RepairPal puts NX annual repair and maintenance around $690 against an $859 luxury compact SUV average, with 0.3 unscheduled shop visits a year versus 0.6 for the class and a 6% chance a given repair is severe versus 10%. Kept out of the top band by the parts that stay genuinely luxury-priced and dealer-only: the 14-inch multimedia unit, Lexus-badged body and trim panels, hybrid-specific components, and Lexus dealer labor rates well above Toyota's. There is effectively no enthusiast aftermarket for a hybrid luxury crossover.
7Technology & InfotainmentGrades above the middle of the scale.2.74B-
The scored NX 350h Premium ships with the 9.8-inch optically bonded display; the 14-inch panel is reserved for the top grades or a paid upgrade, so the volume configuration is well below the segment's screen-size midpoint even though the bigger screen exists in the range.
Lexus Interface is a genuine generational leap over the old Remote Touch pad: crisp graphics, quick processing, a responsive screen and — unusually for 2024 — plenty of retained physical buttons and knobs so the screen is not the only route to a function. It sits in the upper middle band because reviewers repeatedly find the menu organization confusing.
Wireless Apple CarPlay and wireless Android Auto are both standard on every 2024 NX grade, including the base 9.8-inch system — the top-band outcome, and the reason owners can sidestep the native menu structure entirely.
The 'Hey Lexus' Intelligent Assistant handles natural-language requests and Cloud Navigation streams live maps and traffic rather than reading a stale on-board database, which is a real step up. Both are Drive Connect services — complimentary for a trial period and a subscription afterward — so the capability can lapse, which keeps it out of the top band.
A 10-speaker system is standard on the volume grades — better than the six-speaker base units common in this class — and the optional 17-speaker Mark Levinson Premium Surround is one of the better factory systems at any price, with reviewers blunt about how good it sounds.
The 2024 NX runs a 7-inch digital multi-information display inside a hooded binnacle rather than the wall-to-wall configurable panel the German rivals offer at this price — clear and legible, but modest in size and limited in what it can be reconfigured to show. That is partial-digital territory, the middle band.
Real but narrow: Lexus Interface pushes multimedia software and map updates over the air to the screen, so the NX is not stuck with the firmware it left the factory with. It is infotainment-scope only — nothing in the 2024 car's vehicle-control software is updated remotely the way Tesla, Rivian or Ford's BlueCruise-era vehicles do — which places it squarely in the middle band.
The Lexus App covers the expected ground — remote start and climate, lock/unlock, vehicle locate, status and service reminders — through Remote Connect, and Digital Key phone-as-key exists. Mid-band because on the 2024 car the useful functions are subscription services after their trial and Digital Key arrives bundled with upper-grade equipment rather than being fitted to the volume Premium.
Adequate rather than abundant for 2024: USB-C data/charge ports front and rear (rear passengers do get charging points), Bluetooth and a Wi-Fi hotspot, with the wireless charger an option on the volume grade. The clearest evidence that 2024 was the thin year is that Lexus added two more front-console USB-C ports and extended wireless-charger availability to every grade for 2025; there is no household AC outlet at any trim.
Smart Access proximity entry with push-button start is standard across the range, the volume Premium grade includes the power back door, and Digital Key phone-as-key is offered — plus the AZ20's e-latch electronic door releases, which reviewers find more gimmick than gain. Held out of the top band because the power liftgate was not yet standard on every 2024 grade, remote start runs through a subscription app rather than the key fob, and Digital Key is an upper-grade/option item.
A sharp reversing camera is standard and the Panoramic View Monitor with Lane Change Assist and Front Cross Traffic Alert is available — welcome given the AZ20's poor over-the-shoulder view. Mid-band for 2024 specifically: the surround-view system is an option bundle rather than volume-grade standard equipment, and Intuitive Parking Assist with Automatic Braking was still optional, becoming standard only for 2025.
A large 10-inch head-up display is offered and one reviewer was impressed by it, but it is tied to the Luxury grade and F SPORT Handling packages rather than the volume 350h Premium — middle-band availability. Quality is not unqualified either: another tester found its configuration menus a steep learning curve and the image invisible through polarized sunglasses.
8Use-Case FitMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.12C
Workable but compromised. The lower anchors are genuinely good — two sets sitting partially exposed at the seat bight, earning an A in independent car-seat checks and Good+ from IIHS for ease of use — and the rear doors open wide enough on a compact footprint. The limits are space: 36.1 inches of rear legroom leaves little slack behind a rear-facing seat, the bench neither slides nor reclines, and 22.7 cubic feet behind it is tight for a stroller plus a week's gear.
This is the NX's strongest family argument: the 2024 car is an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ and Lexus Safety System+ 3.0 is standard on all eleven grades — including the $40,605 entry car — so the features are on the trims families actually buy rather than behind an option sheet. Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross Traffic Alert and Safe Exit Assist are standard too; the small deductions are the absent published NHTSA overall score (rollover untested) and lane-keeping owners describe as merely competent.
Good for a family of four on a medium haul — quiet at a cruise, comfortable seats, rear vents and charging ports, available heated rear seats — but it thins out over a long weekend: no rear climate zone of its own, no rear entertainment, and with four aboard the 22.7-cubic-foot hold is the binding constraint rather than the seats.
This is what the NX 350h is for. The hybrid pulls away on electric torque, the planetary eCVT never hunts for a gear, stop-start is seamless because there is no starter motor doing it, and standard all-speed radar cruise with stop-and-go handles the crawl. Reviewers describe an unhurried, quiet, low-effort commuter; the deduction is for the low-speed regen blending that takes acclimatization.
39 MPG combined — 41 city — is exceptional for a luxury compact SUV and roughly 15 MPG better than the turbocharged NX 350, and one reviewer saw 35 MPG in real mixed use. It misses the top band because Lexus recommends 91 octane for full output (EPA classifies it 'Premium Recommended'), so EPA still books $2,000 a year, and Lexus dealer service rates are not cheap.
The footprint is genuinely urban-friendly — 183.5 inches long on a 105.9-inch wheelbase with a 38-foot turning circle — so threading and parking are easy on size alone. It stays mid-band because the AZ20 body fights back on sightlines: a rising beltline, thick rear pillars and shallow rear glass, and for 2024 both the Panoramic View Monitor and Intuitive Parking Assist were options rather than standard help.
Not a work vehicle in any serious sense: 2,000 pounds of towing is the unibody's limit across the whole 2024 NX range, there is no bed, cargo behind the second row is 22.7 cubic feet, and the hybrid's 240 horsepower is delivered through an eCVT with no tow/haul calibration. Enough for a small utility trailer or a pair of jet skis and nothing beyond.
The mechanicals are as proven as anything in the class — the A25A-FXS hybrid and planetary eCVT are shared with the RAV4 Hybrid and have a long record, Lexus led the 2024 J.D. Power dependability study, and the Miyata-built body is rattle-free. What it lacks is any work orientation: leather or NuLuxe surfaces, no rubber-floor or vinyl-seat option, no fleet presence, and a chassis never engineered for repeated overload.
Essentially nothing here. There is no onboard AC power or inverter outlet at any 2024 grade, no bed access hardware, no upfit ecosystem beyond dealer-accessory cross bars and a hitch, cargo tie-downs are the basic four, and the surfaces are carpet and leather rather than anything you would hose out.
A strong tourer for its size: EPA publishes 566 miles of total range on the 14.5-gallon tank, the cabin is hushed at a cruise, the front seats draw praise for fatigue-free long stints, and standard all-speed adaptive cruise with lane tracing carries the highway workload. Short of the top band because gear space limits a four-up trip and the engine turns coarse on long grades.
Gravel-road competent and no more. All-wheel drive is standard on the 350h — the rear axle is driven by its own electric motor (E-Four) with no driveshaft — which covers snow, wet trailheads and dirt access roads. But ground clearance is an ordinary 7.7–8.2 inches, there are no skid plates, no locking differentials, no terrain-mode selector and no off-road grade in the 2024 lineup, and the 2,000-pound tow rating rules out most toys on a trailer.
Flexible for its volume but the volume is the problem: 60/40 folding seatbacks, a flat-ish load floor, underfloor cubbies where the spare would be, and dealer-accessory cross bars and a hitch for what will not fit inside. At 22.7 cubic feet behind the seats and 46.9 with them folded it is a small-hatchback amount of space, so bulky gear has to go on the roof or a rack.
9Driving ExperienceMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.51C+
Secure and tidier than the old NX — the GA-K platform gives it a stiff structure, Sport mode firms things usefully, and instrumented grip of 0.79 g is respectable for a 4,080-pound crossover on all-season tires. It is not an eager car though: reviewers found it composed but uninterested in corners, which is mid-to-upper band rather than class-leading.
Accurate and well weighted — reviewers agree the NX places itself confidently and that Sport mode adds meaningful heft — but the feedback is synthetic. The same testers who praise the precision call the effort artificial and too heavy in Sport and note there is little genuine feel coming back, which is the definition of the precise-but-numb middle band.
Stopping power is never in question and fade is a non-issue for how the car is used, but the pedal is the weak link: the friction/regen handover is inconsistent at low speed, so the last few feet at a stop sign take a deliberate extra push until you learn it. That is a well-documented characteristic of this hybrid rather than a defect, and it caps the item in the middle band.
The hybrid calibration is the best-executed part of the car: engine start and shutdown are close to undetectable, EV-to-engine transitions pass without a shudder, and motor torque covers the off-idle response an Atkinson-cycle four cannot. Reviewers call it a class leader for hybrid integration; the deduction is for the eCVT's rubber-band flare under full throttle and the low-speed regen handover.
Near-silent in EV creep and unobtrusive at a steady cruise, but this is the NX's clearest refinement miss: asked for full power the 2.5-liter Atkinson four revs high, holds there and turns coarse, and with no gearshifts to break it up the result is a monotone drone. Multiple 2024 reviews are notably blunt that it sounds less refined than past Lexus products.
38 feet is mid-band for a compact SUV — unremarkable but perfectly manageable in a parking structure, and the small footprint does more for urban usability than the circle itself.
The fundamentals are right — the Premium grade's 8-way power seat with memory and power tilt/telescoping column give a wide adjustment range, and Lexus kept real buttons and knobs for climate and audio instead of burying them in the screen. Points come off for the AZ20's quirks: a reviewer who never found a satisfactory seating position, e-latch electronic door releases, an unconventional shifter, a fiddly electric park brake button and compromised over-the-shoulder visibility.
Pleasant and easy to like without ever being entertaining. The 350h is tuned for calm — 7.2 seconds to 60, a droning eCVT at full throttle, numb steering and a chassis reviewers describe as uninterested in corners — so nobody takes the long way home in one. The name may say 'Nimble Crossover,' but the enthusiast case in this range belongs to the turbo NX 350 F SPORT Handling.
10Value & Market PositionGrades above the middle of the scale.3.38B+
The 2024 NX still opens with the four-cylinder NX 250 at $40,605 including destination — the cheapest entry in the compact luxury class by roughly $3,700 to $7,600 — and every grade carries Lexus Safety System+ 3.0, the 9.8-inch Lexus Interface touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, dual-zone climate and NuLuxe upholstery as standard. It falls short of the top band because the base car is front-drive with 203 hp and leaves the 14-inch screen, head-up display, Mark Levinson audio, panoramic roof and heated/ventilated seats to Premium and Luxury grades.
The scored hybrid is the strongest part of the money argument: at $44,615 the NX 350h AWD undercuts every rival's gas-only, lower-powered base car while returning 39 MPG combined, and it then holds its value better than anything else in the class. What keeps it out of the top band is that the money does not buy dynamics or space — reviewers consistently place its performance, cargo room and rear-seat space behind the X3, GV70 and RDX — and the plug-in 450h+ asks close to $60,000 before incentives.
Four powertrains — naturally aspirated NX 250 (FWD or AWD), turbo NX 350, hybrid NX 350h, plug-in NX 450h+ — spread across base, Premium, F SPORT Handling and Luxury grades for thirteen published configurations from $40,605 to $61,155, which is unusually wide spacing for the segment and wider at the bottom than the 2026 lineup that drops the NX 250. The only real gap is that the hybrid is AWD-only and F SPORT Handling is confined to the NX 350 and 450h+.
The NX was the best-selling compact luxury SUV in the US in 2024 at 74,488 units, ahead of the BMW X3's 68,799, and the second-best-selling Lexus behind the RX. Total volume was flat against 2023's 74,526 — the generation's plateau rather than a decline — while the mix shifted hard toward the scored powertrain, with NX hybrid sales up 26.6% and the plug-in up 19.7%.
Lexus closed 2024 with the best full-year US result in its 35-year history and holds the strongest residual reputation of any luxury marque — an eight-time KBB Best Resale Value luxury-brand winner — alongside a ninth consecutive KBB Most Trusted Luxury Brand award. It sits below the aspirational top band because the brand trades on dependability, quiet and resale rather than the performance or design halo BMW, Porsche and Genesis bring to this same segment.
There was one genuinely large buyer benefit in 2024 — Lexus passed the full $7,500 federal clean-vehicle credit through as lease cash on the NX 450h+, cutting its lease cost sharply — but it applied only to the plug-in. On the gas and hybrid NX, this was a class sales leader from a brand that rarely discounts: modest regional APR and lease support, transaction prices close to sticker, and no broad cash on the hood.
2024 is the third model year of the second-generation AZ20 NX, which launched for 2022 on the GA-K platform with the then-new Lexus Interface infotainment — current hardware, mid-cycle, with no facelift due yet given the first-generation car went four years before its refresh. The year itself is explicitly a carry-over: interior color-keying, door-trim accents and package reshuffling, nothing mechanical.
Reviewers rate the 2024 NX well without ever making it the pick of the class: Edmunds gives it 7.8/10 and U.S. News 8.1/10, both praising interior quality, standard safety content and value while marking it down for performance and packaging, and it carries an IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK+ for 2024. Owner scores are stronger than press scores, but there is no 10Best, NACTOY or comparison-test win to point to.
