The verdict
A mixed-report compact luxury suv, strong on efficiency and held back by performance.
The 2023 Lexus NX 350h is the sensible-shoes pick in the compact luxury SUV class: 39 MPG combined, standard electric AWD, an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ rating, and the best resale value in its segment, all starting at $43,105. What you give up is space and speed — 22.7 cubic feet behind the rear seats trails rivals by 10 to 20 cubic feet, and 7.2 seconds to 60 mph with a droning CVT is nobody's idea of fun. If you want a luxury badge that costs little to own and nothing to worry about, this is the one; if you want to enjoy driving it or haul much in it, keep looking.
Jump to scoresStrengths
- Hybrid economy that actually lowers your fuel bill
- Safety you get on every trim, not as an upcharge
- Toyota hybrid hardware under a Lexus badge
What holds it back
- Cargo space is the worst part of the car
- Slow, and it sounds like it
- Nobody buys this for the driving

Detailed scoring by subject
1Performance & PowertrainThe NX's lowest-graded category.0.76F
The volume hybrid trim pairs the 2.5L A25A-FXS four with front and rear motor-generators for 240 combined system hp — modest output in a segment whose band runs to 550 hp, though competitive against other compact-luxury hybrids.
Toyota/Lexus does not publish a combined system torque figure for the NX 350h; the US spec listings carry 167 lb-ft, and the engine alone peaks at 239 Nm (~176 lb-ft) at 4,300–4,500 rpm. Either way it is near the bottom of the SUV band.
Lexus quotes 7.2 seconds for the 350h — adequate rather than quick, and roughly a second behind the 275 hp NX 350 turbo.
Reviewers consistently describe the hybrid transitions as seamless and the car as hushed in normal use, with no turbo lag and immediate low-speed electric response; the four-cylinder turns coarse only under sustained full throttle.
The planetary e-CVT has no discrete gears to hunt between and stays transparent in ordinary driving, but it lets revs flare and drone when the accelerator is pinned — the standard trade-off of this hybrid architecture.
A 2,000-lb rating covers a small utility trailer or a pair of jet skis and nothing more — typical for a unibody compact luxury crossover but near the floor of the SUV band.
Every NX 350h is AWD — Lexus's E-Four system drives the rear axle with a dedicated electric motor rather than a driveshaft, so there is nothing to option and no FWD hybrid sold in the US. Operation is on-demand and basic: no low range, no locking differentials, no terrain-mode suite.
Unibody crossover with roughly 7.7–8.1 in of clearance, road tires, no skid plates, no locker and no off-road trim; the electric rear axle and Trail Mode handle a wet launch ramp or a snowy driveway, which is the extent of the brief.
Four genuinely distinct powertrains in one compact SUV for 2023 — naturally aspirated gas, turbo gas, full hybrid and plug-in hybrid — two of them electrified. Few rivals at any price offer that spread.
2Efficiency & RangeThe NX's best-graded category.3.94A+
EPA rates the NX 350h AWD at 39 MPG combined — 11 MPG better than the non-hybrid NX 250 and 14 better than the NX 350 turbo, from the same body.
City is the hybrid's strongest figure, as expected from a power-split system that runs on electric drive at low speed and recaptures braking energy.
Highway trails city by 4 MPG — the usual hybrid inversion — but 37 MPG still beats the gas NX 350's 28–29 MPG highway outright.
A 14.5-gallon tank at the EPA combined rating gives roughly 565 miles between fills — long-legged for a compact SUV, and the practical everyday benefit of the hybrid alongside the MPG number.
EPA puts annual fuel cost at $2,000 — $250 below the regular-fuel NX 250 and $1,100 below the NX 350 turbo, despite the hybrid's premium-gas rating eating into the MPG advantage.
Lexus recommends premium unleaded and the EPA files the 350h under 'Premium Gasoline', so the hybrid's efficiency is bought back at the pump — notable because the mechanically related Toyota RAV4 Hybrid runs on regular, as does the NX 250. Premium is recommended rather than required, which keeps it in the middle band.
3SafetyOne of the NX's strongest categories.3.60A-
NHTSA crash-tested the 2023 NX 350h but withholds the composite because the rollover test is unrated: frontal is 4 stars (driver and passenger alike) and every side measure — barrier front and rear, pole, overall side — is 5 stars. The 4.8 estimate reflects that split rather than claiming a 5-star overall NHTSA never published.
The 2023 NX is a Top Safety Pick+ winner with Good in every crashworthiness test IIHS awarded on — small overlap front driver and passenger, moderate overlap front, updated side (side 2.0), roof strength and head restraints. Held below the ceiling because the updated moderate overlap test rates this generation only Acceptable: the rear dummy's lap belt slid off the pelvis onto the abdomen, a rear-occupant weakness Lexus did not fix until the 2026 seat-belt revision.
Lexus Safety System+ 3.0 is standard on every 2023 NX trim including the base NX 250 — Pre-Collision System with pedestrian/cyclist detection and intersection turn support, Risk Avoidance Emergency Steer Assist, all-speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control with Curve Speed Management, Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist, Lane Tracing Assist, Road Sign Assist and Intelligent High Beam. Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert and Safe Exit Assist are standard across the lineup too, so none of the core five is trim-locked.
IIHS rates the standard Pre-Collision System Superior in all three front-crash-prevention evaluations applied to this model year — vehicle-to-vehicle, pedestrian daytime and pedestrian nighttime — with the system avoiding collisions outright in the test runs. A clean sweep including the night pedestrian scenario is the top band.
Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert is standard on all 2023 trims, joined by standard Safe Exit Assist, which is the genuinely useful addition on an urban compact SUV. Short of the top band because rear cross-traffic is alert-oriented rather than a broadly intervening braking system, and the Panoramic View Monitor and digital rearview mirror that would fill the gaps are optional rather than base equipment.
Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist and Lane Tracing Assist are standard and hold a lane competently when the markings are clear, but owners and reviewers of this generation describe centering that gets jerky and degrades noticeably with faded lines, rain or a dirty windshield — mid-pack rather than the confident, hands-light centering of the best luxury systems.
All-speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control with stop-and-go and the Curve Speed Management added for this generation is standard on every trim and is consistently well reviewed for smooth spacing and clean restarts. The combined highway-assist experience stops short of the best because Lane Tracing Assist is the only lane component layered on top — there is no traffic-jam mode and no hands-off tier.
No hands-free highway mode is offered on any 2023 NX. Lexus Teammate Advanced Drive depends on lidar hardware the NX does not carry and was still confined to the LS 500h, so the NX is hands-on only at every trim.
IIHS rates the 2023 NX's headlights Good across all three tested trim variations, so the volume hybrid is not stuck with a downgraded lamp the way many luxury rivals' base trims are. Intelligent High Beam is standard, with triple-beam LED and adaptive high-beam lighting on upper grades.
The AZ20 NX's rising beltline, thick rear pillars and shallow rear glass restrict the over-the-shoulder and rearward view, and the ceiling-mounted center top-tether anchor blocks the mirror further when in use. Camera compensation is good but costs extra — the Panoramic View Monitor and digital rearview mirror are option-package items, not base equipment on the volume NX 350h.
IIHS rates the 2023 NX's LATCH hardware Good+ — the top grade plus credit for extra usable positions across the three rear seating locations — with lower anchors that sit near the surface of the seat bight and reclining seatbacks for access. Kept out of the top band because this is a compact SUV: a rear-facing infant seat is a tight fit behind a tall driver, three-across is not realistic, and the center top tether is a ceiling anchor.
4Space & ComfortOne of the NX's weakest categories.0.97F
The second-generation NX is a strictly two-row, five-seat compact crossover with no third-row option on any 2023 trim or powertrain.
Published first-row headroom for the 2023 NX without the moonroof; the optional panoramic roof costs 1.2 in.
Second-generation NX front legroom, unchanged for 2023 (a carry-over year within the generation that began in 2022).
Second-row headroom is the NX's strongest interior dimension, comfortably mid-pack for a compact SUV.
Adequate for two adults but notably short of larger compact SUVs; reviewers repeatedly flag the NX as small for its price bracket.
The NX is a two-row SUV with no third row offered on any 2023 trim, so it scores in the low band by definition.
Below the compact-SUV normalization floor of 25 cu ft — the hybrid battery costs nothing here, but the NX's sloping tailgate and short body leave it trailing the class.
Maximum cargo falls below the 55 cu ft SUV band floor, one of the NX's clearest practical weaknesses against compact rivals.
Competent everyday storage — usable console bin, door pockets and a shelf under the floating center stack — but no standout innovation, no underfloor trick storage and no onboard AC power.
Front seats are well cushioned and supportive with power adjustment and available ventilation, though at least one reviewer questioned their endurance over multi-hour stints and the rear bench is short on legroom.
Ride compliance is the NX's headline comfort strength — plush yet controlled, and it stays composed even on the F SPORT's 20-inch wheels.
Quiet at a cruise with well-suppressed road noise and long electric-only stretches at low speed; the main intrusion is CVT drone when the 2.5L is worked hard.
Dual-zone climate with rear console vents is standard and the full comfort roster (heated and ventilated front seats, heated wheel, heated rear seats, remote climate via the Lexus app) is available — but the NX 350h is a single trim, so most of it lands in the Premium or Luxury package rather than standard.
5Cost of OwnershipMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.15C
For 2023 the naturally aspirated NX 250 remained the entry point and Lexus took only a $255–$405 price bump across the lineup, holding the nameplate's floor under $40K — the cheapest way into the compact luxury SUV class that year, several thousand below an X3, Q5 or GLC.
The hybrid is AWD-only for 2023 and Premium is its volume grade — the step that adds heated front seats, a heated steering wheel and the power liftgate most buyers expect — putting the sticker at $46,155 before options and near $46,900 as typically equipped. Base 350h is $43,105 and the Luxury grade tops the hybrid range at $50,555.
Published estimates disagree by a factor of five — CarEdge projects $2,488 for the NX 350h while Edmunds True Cost to Own runs to roughly $13,700 by pricing scheduled service at Lexus dealer rates — so a figure in the high $5Ks is the fair read: genuinely low repair incidence for a Toyota hybrid powertrain, offset by luxury-dealer labor. It sits just below the $6,400 carried on the mechanically identical 2026 NX, reflecting 2023-era service pricing.
The NX is the strongest value-holder in its segment and the hybrid variants hold best of all; sources cluster between the high 50s and high 60s, so ~61% is a defensible central estimate for a 2023 NX 350h. Lexus as a brand won Kelley Blue Book's Best Resale Value luxury award for 2023.
Lexus's 4-year/50,000-mile basic coverage is exactly the luxury-segment norm — level with BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi and Acura — and mid-band for the framework.
Six years/70,000 miles beats the German rivals' 4/50 but sits far below the 10-year plans that anchor the top of this band. On a hybrid the meaningful backstop is the separate battery term, which runs to 10 years/150,000 miles on 2020-and-newer Lexus models and covers the single most expensive component on this powertrain.
Lexus covers only the first two scheduled services — 6 months/5,000 miles and 12 months/10,000 miles — which is short next to BMW's 3-year/36,000-mile plan, but it is paired with four years of unlimited-mileage roadside assistance and long connected-services trials on this generation's Lexus Interface system. Solid rather than generous, and scored to match the identical program on the 2026 NX and the Lexus UX.
$46,855 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (61% retained, or about $28,582) leaves about $18,273 in depreciation. Add the projected $5,800 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $24,073 in total.
6Reliability & QualityOne of the NX's strongest categories.3.76A
Three years on, the 2023 NX is judged on real survey data rather than a prediction: Consumer Reports rates the 2023 NX much more reliable than the average car of its model year, and J.D. Power's quality-and-reliability read on this generation sits in the 85/100 "Great" band. Held out of the top band because the 2026 VDS — which surveys owners of exactly these 2023 vehicles after three years — gave the compact premium SUV award to the BMW X4 rather than the NX, and CR's trouble-spot data for the early AZ20 flags in-car electronics (infotainment, cameras/sensors) rather than hardware.
Lexus is the dependability benchmark on both ends of this car's life: it topped the 2023 VDS outright at 133 PP100 against a 186 PP100 industry average the year the 2023 NX went on sale, and it is still the highest-ranked premium brand — a fourth consecutive year — in the 2026 study at 151 PP100 versus a 204 PP100 average, comfortably clear of Cadillac (175) and Porsche (182). A slip to tenth in the 2023 Initial Quality Study is the only blemish, and IQS measures 90-day annoyances rather than durability.
Typical activity for the generation with nothing powertrain- or structure-related reaching the hybrid, but more exposure than a clean sheet: the 2023 NX 350h is named in the July 2023 steering-column spiral-cable campaign, which can deactivate the driver's airbag (a real safety defect, ~152,900 vehicles, remedied by inspection and replacement), and in the October 2025 Panoramic View Monitor software recall for a frozen or blank reverse camera. The two largest later NX camera and head-restraint campaigns are limited to the non-hybrid NX 250/NX 350 and do not reach this car. Deducted further for the widely reported E-Latch door-handle failures on 2022-2024 NX — a service campaign in Canada, dealer-handled in the US — and the first-generation 14-inch multimedia software bugs carried into 2023.
The scored configuration is the NX 350h: Toyota's 2.5L Atkinson four with dual motor-generators, a planetary eCVT and a separate rear electric motor for AWD, 239 combined hp — the same fifth-generation hybrid system as the RAV4 Hybrid and one of the most proven high-mileage drivetrains sold in the US, with no meaningful failure mode at the traction battery, transaxle or engine. It carries none of the turbocharged T24A-FTS exposure of the NX 350 or the charging hardware of the 450h+, and 2023 is a pure carry-over year for it, so the hardware already had a model year of field data behind it.
The AZ20 redesign moved the NX decisively upmarket — reviewers describe big-Lexus materials in a compact package, with heft and substance wherever hand or eye lands, NuLuxe or leather, and F Sport perforated leather and aluminum trim. Kept out of the top band because a recurring thread of owner reviews calls the materials cheap for the price, and rivals such as the Volvo XC60 and Genesis GV70 are consistently rated richer inside.
Japanese assembly at Toyota Motor Kyushu's Miyata plant gives the NX the tight, solid build the brand trades on, and most press cars are reported rattle-free. Marked down from the brand's usual score because this is the second year of a ground-up redesign and the evidence is genuinely mixed: Lexus slipped to tenth in the 2023 Initial Quality Study, and owner reviews of this specific year report cabin rattles and squeaks and uneven panel fit, alongside the E-Latch door mechanism that frequently fails to catch on the first push.
Lexus service satisfaction sits near the top of the industry — 900 on J.D. Power's 2026 Customer Service Index among premium brands against an 868 average — and a 2023 buyer also had the brand's complimentary first two years / 10,000 miles of scheduled maintenance and 24-hour roadside. The roughly 240-245 US stores are solid rather than dense coverage for a premium brand, so rural owners travel further than a Toyota buyer would.
The NX shares its GA-K platform and its entire hybrid drivetrain with the RAV4 Hybrid, so wear items and mechanical parts are cheap, universally stocked and serviceable by independent shops, and RepairPal puts NX running costs well below the luxury compact SUV norm. Trimmed for the luxury-priced pieces that stay dealer-only — the E-Latch door handle assemblies that this generation is known for failing, and the 14-inch multimedia head unit.
7Technology & InfotainmentGrades above the middle of the scale.2.89B-
The volume NX 350h ships with the 9.8-inch optically bonded screen; the 14-inch display is an option tied to the navigation/Luxury packages.
The Lexus Interface system that debuted on this generation was widely called a generational leap — fast, cloud-connected and finally touch-first — but the capacitive climate strip and the missing physical home button draw consistent criticism.
Both wireless Apple CarPlay and wireless Android Auto are standard on every 2023 NX trim including the base NX 350h, with no wired-only entry point.
'Hey Lexus' natural-language voice with dual noise-cancelling microphones and a cloud-based navigation system with Google points of interest — genuinely competitive native nav rather than the legacy system most owners bypassed.
A solid 10-speaker base system and one of the better premium options in the class — the 17-speaker Mark Levinson — though reaching it requires stacking option packages.
A 7-inch digital meter display is standard with a larger configurable display available — modern and crisp, but smaller and less reconfigurable than the full-width clusters rivals fit at this price.
Lexus Interface delivers over-the-air map, media and infotainment software updates — real OTA capability, but scoped to the infotainment domain rather than whole-vehicle feature updates.
The Lexus app covers the core remote set — start, climate pre-conditioning, lock/unlock, vehicle locate and status — and Digital Key lets a phone act as a key, but Remote Connect is subscription-gated after its trial and Digital Key arrives only in a paid package.
USB-C in both rows including a dual USB-C port at the rear of the console, but wireless charging is a paid option rather than standard and no household AC outlet is offered.
Proximity smart-key entry and push-button start are standard, the e-Latch electronic door releases are standard across the range, and phone-as-key is available — the hands-free power liftgate is the one piece held back to the Premium package.
Rear camera standard, with a genuinely capable options ladder above it — Panoramic View Monitor with an underfloor see-through view, front and rear parking sensors, and Advanced Park automated parking — but all of that is optional on the volume NX 350h.
A large 10-inch color head-up display is offered and is well regarded, but it is an option bundled high in the NX 350h's package structure rather than something a volume buyer gets by default.
8Use-Case FitOne of the NX's weakest categories.2.10C
LATCH hardware is among the best-rated in the class and the rear doors open wide, but 36.1 in of rear legroom and 22.7 cu ft behind the seats make stroller-plus-groceries days a squeeze.
A 2023 Top Safety Pick+ with Lexus Safety System+ 3.0, Safe Exit Assist and Good-rated headlights standard on the base trim — families are not asked to buy up for the safety content.
Quiet, plush and long-legged on ~565 miles of range, with rear console vents and optional heated rear seats — but there is no rear entertainment, no separate rear climate zone, and luggage space with four aboard is the binding constraint.
This is the NX 350h's core competence: seamless electric creep away from stops, no perceptible lag, light controls and a hushed cabin make it an unusually low-effort commuter.
39 MPG combined is outstanding for a luxury compact SUV and the EPA puts annual fuel cost at $2,000, but Lexus specifies premium gasoline for the 350h, which claws back part of the advantage versus the regular-fuel NX 250.
A compact 183.5-in footprint and a 38.1-ft turning circle make it easy to place in town, and Advanced Park plus the Panoramic View Monitor are available — but both are optional, and outward visibility over the rising beltline is only fair.
A 2,000-lb tow rating and 895-lb payload in a unibody luxury crossover cover a small utility trailer and nothing more; there is no bed, no heavy-duty cooling and no work-oriented drivetrain.
The Toyota hybrid-electric drivetrain underneath is one of the most durability-proven powertrains on the road, but everything around it — NuLuxe upholstery, low-slung unibody, 20-inch wheel options — is specified for a luxury owner, not a fleet.
Essentially no work provisions: cargo tie-downs and an available tow hitch are the extent of it, with no onboard AC power, no washable surfaces and no meaningful upfit ecosystem.
A strong mile-eater for its size — roughly 565 miles between fills, a plush and quiet cabin, and full-speed adaptive cruise with lane tracing standard; the limits are seat endurance over very long stints and modest luggage room.
Standard electric-rear-axle AWD and about 8 in of ground clearance handle gravel, trailheads and snow, but with no low range, no locking differentials and a 2,000-lb tow limit this is a fire-road vehicle, not an adventure platform.
A 60/40 folding rear bench and an available hitch cover normal luggage, but 46.9 cu ft maximum is well short of the class, roof rails are an accessory rather than standard, and the sloping tailgate limits bulky loads.
9Driving ExperienceMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.37C+
Secure and predictable but tuned firmly for comfort — reviewers report understeer, body lean and early tire squeal when pushed, well short of the German compact luxury SUVs.
Weighting is pleasant and consistent and the rack is accurate enough for confident placement, but feedback is essentially absent.
Regen blending is better resolved than most hybrids in the class — the pedal feels conventional rather than spongy — though stopping power is adequate rather than a strong point on a 4,080-lb crossover.
The strongest part of the way the NX 350h drives: transitions between electric and gasoline power are imperceptible, there is no stop/start shudder because the engine restarts through the motor-generator, and tip-in is immediate.
Near-silent at light loads and on electric power, but the 2.5-liter four flares and drones against the e-CVT under hard acceleration — the classic Toyota hybrid noise signature.
Derived from the Lexus technical specification's 5.8 m minimum tyre turning radius; the 40 ft figure some aggregators list is the body (wall-to-wall) measurement, not curb-to-curb.
A comfortable, well-adjustable seating position with a commanding view forward and the new floating center stack putting the screen in easy reach — undercut by the capacitive climate touch controls and thick rear pillars.
Competent and refined but deliberately unexciting — no enthusiast reviewer recommends the 350h on driving enjoyment, and the hybrid's 7.2-second 0–60 and CVT character reinforce that.
10Value & Market PositionGrades above the middle of the scale.3.34B+
A 2023 NX opens at $39,755 — the cheapest entry in the compact luxury class, several thousand under an X3, Q5 or GLC — and every grade carries Lexus Safety System+ 3.0, the 9.8-inch Lexus Interface touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, NuLuxe upholstery and power front seats. It stops short of the top band because the 14-inch screen, Mark Levinson audio, leather, head-up display, heated seats and power liftgate all sit behind the Premium and Luxury grades, so the volume 350h Premium lands near $47K.
The hybrid is the strongest money argument in the range: $43,105 buys a 39-mpg AWD luxury crossover with the best retained value in the class and an IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK+, which is a genuinely favorable cost-per-year story against the German rivals. What keeps it out of the top band is that the money does not buy pace or space — reviewers place the NX's dynamics and cargo room behind the X3, GV70 and RDX — and in 2023 the hybrid's scarcity meant few buyers transacted below sticker.
Four distinct powertrains in one nameplate — naturally aspirated NX 250 (the only FWD option), turbocharged NX 350, hybrid NX 350h and plug-in hybrid NX 450h+ — crossed with base, Premium, Luxury and F SPORT grades, spanning $39,755 to just under $59,000. That is an unusually wide and well-spaced ladder for the class, with a real entry point at the bottom rather than a single loaded starting grade.
2023 was the NX's breakout year: 74,526 US sales, up 25,524 units (+52%) from the 49,002 recorded during the 2022 generation changeover, which put it at the top of the compact luxury SUV class ahead of the Audi Q5 and comfortably clear of the BMW X3. Second only to the RX within Lexus and on a steeply rising trajectory.
Lexus holds the strongest residual and dependability reputation of any luxury brand — it took Kelley Blue Book's Best Resale Value luxury brand award for 2023, its second consecutive and fourth overall win — and buyers pay for that reputation rather than negotiate against it. It sits below the aspirational top band because Lexus trades on reliability and quiet comfort rather than the performance halo BMW, Porsche or Genesis design bring to the same segment.
2023 was still a seller's market for this car: the redesigned NX was supply-constrained, the hybrid most of all, and buyers generally did well to transact at sticker without dealer-added accessories. Lexus ran subvented APR programs in the 2.49–3.99% range on slower-moving models and occasional lease support, but there was little cash on the hood for an NX 350h — modest incentives at best, with no meaningful discounting.
2023 is the second model year of the second-generation AZ20 NX, which arrived for 2022 on the GA-K platform with an all-new body, interior and the Lexus Interface multimedia system — about as fresh as a buyer could ask for, with no redesign risk anywhere on the horizon. The first-generation car did not get its facelift until its fourth year, so a 2023 buyer had a long runway ahead.
Reviewers respect the 2023 NX without handing it a class win — U.S. News scores it 7.8/10 and ranks it eighth among 2023 luxury compact SUVs, praising the cabin, infotainment and ease of use while calling the base engine underwhelming and the cargo hold small. The hard credential is safety: IIHS named it a TOP SAFETY PICK+ with Good ratings in all six crash tests and for headlights, and Lexus took KBB's luxury resale award. No 10Best, NACTOY or comparison-test wins to point to.
