The verdict

A mixed-report compact luxury sedan, strong on value and held back by efficiency.

The 2018 C-Class has one of the nicest cabins in the compact luxury class, a quiet and supple ride, and a smooth new 9-speed automatic behind its 241-hp turbo four. As a used buy, though, you get the pre-facelift car. It has a small non-touch 7-inch screen, analog gauges, smartphone mirroring only as an option, and headlights that IIHS rated Poor in every configuration. Running costs are high: premium fuel costs about $3,050 a year, and maintenance and repairs run about $7,800 over five years once the 4-year/50k warranty lapses. It suits a buyer who values ambience and comfort over technology and low running costs, and who will pay for a pre-purchase inspection.

5.8 s (C300, mfr.); 4.6 s AMG C43, 3.9 s AMG C63 S
57/100
#4 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

For 2018 Mercedes quoted 5.8 s for the C300, down from 6.0 s the year before, helped by the new 9-speed automatic. Instrumented tests of the M274 car have run slightly quicker.

Powertrain refinement66
#5 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The M274 turbo four has lots of low-end boost and little lag. Reviewers still found its sound coarse for a luxury sedan, and the auto stop/start is abrupt.

Transmission behavior72
#3 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The C300 switched to the 9G-Tronic nine-speed automatic for 2018. It shifts smoothly and keeps the engine in its torque band, though it can pause briefly on multi-gear kickdowns in Comfort mode.

AWD/4WD availability72
#2 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

4MATIC AWD is available on the core C300 sedan and standard on the AMG C43. The C350e and C63 are RWD-only, and the system is a conventional full-time setup with no terrain modes.

Powertrain lineup breadth68
#2 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

There are four distinct powertrains for 2018: the 2.0L turbo I4, the C350e plug-in hybrid (in its final US year), the AMG 3.0L biturbo V6 and the AMG 4.0L biturbo V8.

NHTSA overall rating
5 stars overall (4-star frontal, 5-star side, 4-star rollover)
100/100
#1 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

NHTSA rated the 2018 W205 C-Class sedan five stars overall. Frontal crash and rollover each scored four stars.

IIHS awards & crashworthiness66
#7 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The car rated Good in every crashworthiness test it took but won no 2018 IIHS award. The 2018 criteria required Acceptable or Good headlights, and every C-Class headlight rated Poor. The passenger-side small overlap test was not run for 2018.

Standard ADAS suite breadth50
#3 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

2018 was a carry-over year before the 2019 facelift. The C300 came standard with Collision Prevention Assist Plus low-speed braking, Attention Assist and Blind Spot Assist. Adaptive cruise, lane keeping and pedestrian-capable PRE-SAFE Brake were extra-cost package options.

Automatic emergency braking performance56
#6 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

With the optional PRE-SAFE Brake with Pedestrian Recognition, the car avoided collisions at both 12 and 25 mph (Superior). IIHS did not test the standard system, and there is no pedestrian or nighttime result.

Blind-spot & cross-traffic coverage60
#1 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

Alert-only Blind Spot Assist is standard. Active Blind Spot Assist with braking intervention, and cross-traffic functions, require the optional Driver Assistance Package.

Lane keeping & centering56
#3 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

Active Lane Keeping Assist and DISTRONIC PLUS Steering Assist centering work competently, but both are optional. A base C300 has no lane-keeping assistance.

Adaptive cruise & highway assist66
#3 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The optional DISTRONIC PLUS provides full-speed stop-and-go with Steering Assist and was strong for its era. It is an extra-cost option and lacks the route-based speed adaptation added in 2019.

Hands-free driving availability10
#3 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The 2018 C-Class has no hands-free highway driving. Steering Assist requires hands on the wheel.

Headlight performance18
#8 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

IIHS rated both tested headlight configurations Poor, the base halogens and the LED Headlamps Package alike, so no 2018 C300 had adequate headlights.

Outward visibility64
#5 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

Forward sightlines are typical for a compact sedan, but the sloping rear roofline and thick C-pillars limit the rear view. A rearview camera is standard and the surround-view camera is optional.

Child-seat (LATCH) usability62
#2 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

IIHS rates the LATCH hardware Good, with easy-to-find anchors and low attachment force. The compact rear seat limits room for rear-facing seats and fitting three across.

4Space & ComfortMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.88C-
Seating capacity
5 seats
100/100
#1 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The pre-facelift W205 C 300 sedan seats five, with a tight fifth position over the center tunnel.

Front headroom
37.1 in (standard sunroof)
28/100
#7 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

Front headroom sits in the lower part of the sedan band, partly because a sunroof is standard on the 2018 C 300.

Front legroom
41.7 in
43/100
#5 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

Front legroom is adequate for the compact luxury class.

Rear headroom
37.1 in
53/100
#5 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

Rear headroom is competitive for a compact sedan.

Rear legroom
35.2 in
32/100
#2 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

Rear legroom is typical for the class but tight for tall adults, and reviewers note the rear seat sits low.

Cargo/trunk volume
12.6 cu ft; 40/20/40 split-folding rear seatback
26/100
#5 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The trunk is small for the class and trails the BMW 3 Series at about 17 cu ft, though the split-folding rear seat helps.

In-cabin storage & clever solutions55
#3 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

Storage is ordinary: a covered console bin with cupholders, a modest armrest bin and door pockets. The standard 40/20/40 rear seat is the one flexible feature.

Seat comfort72
#5 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The standard 10-way power front seats have four-way lumbar and memory and are supportive, with multicontour seats optional. The low rear cushion gives poor thigh support.

Ride quality78
#1 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The W205 rides pliantly and absorbs bumps in typical Mercedes fashion while staying composed. Air suspension is optional, and sport packages on run-flat tires firm it up.

Cabin quietness75
#2 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The cabin is quiet at speed. Some tire roar comes through on run-flats, and the M274 four-cylinder is audible and coarse when pushed.

Climate & comfort features52
#7 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

Dual-zone automatic climate is standard. Heated seats, the heated wheel and ventilated seats are extra-cost options, which is stingy for a luxury car.

5Cost of OwnershipOne of the C-Class's weakest categories.0.20F
Base MSRP
$41,245 (C 300 RWD: $40,250 + $995 destination)
42/100
#8 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The 2018 C 300 RWD sedan is the fourth model year of the W205 generation, which launched for MY2015. It started at $40,250 plus a $995 destination charge, and 4MATIC added $2,000.

Volume-Trim Price
~$46,000 (C 300 4MATIC with Premium package, typically equipped; $43,245 before options)
35/100
#6 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The C 300 4MATIC was the volume configuration at $43,245 with destination. Most dealer stock added the Premium package and a few stand-alone options, which puts a typically equipped car around $46,000.

5-Year Maintenance & Repair Cost
~$7,800 over 5 years (maintenance + repairs)
18/100
#8 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

Dealer A/B services are expensive, and repair spend climbs in years 4–5 once the 4-year/50k warranty lapses. That puts 5-year maintenance and repairs near the top of the sedan band.

5-Year Resale Value Retention
~42% retained after 5 years
23/100
#7 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

German compact luxury sedans depreciate steeply. KBB shows the 2018 C 300 now trading at about $10,450 against its $44,270 as-equipped MSRP (about 24% retained after roughly 8 years), which implies a 5-year retention in the low 40s, even with the 2021–23 used-price spike.

Basic warranty
4 yr / 50,000 mi (bumper-to-bumper)
50/100
#1 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The 2018 C-Class is covered by the Mercedes-Benz New Vehicle Limited Warranty of 4 years / 50,000 miles, which is typical for the luxury segment.

Powertrain warranty
4 yr / 50,000 mi (no separate powertrain coverage)
0/100
#2 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

Mercedes-Benz offers no separate, longer powertrain warranty, so powertrain coverage ends with the 4-year/50k basic warranty. That is below the start of the sedan band.

Complimentary maintenance & perks40
#8 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The 2018 C-Class includes no complimentary scheduled maintenance; owners pay for A/B services or buy a Prepaid Maintenance plan. The benefits are 24-hour Roadside Assistance for the warranty term and an mbrace connected-services trial. BMW had just cut Ultimate Care to 3 yr/36k, so the gap to the benchmark rival narrowed but did not close.

Effective 5-Year Ownership Cost
$34,480 (≈$26,680 depreciation + $7,800 maintenance)
34/100
#8 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

$46,000 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (42% retained, or about $19,320) leaves about $26,680 in depreciation. Add the projected $7,800 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $34,480 in total.

6Reliability & QualityOne of the C-Class's strongest categories.2.26C
Predicted reliability60
#5 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

2018 is the fourth and last pre-facelift US model year of the W205 generation (2015–2021), a carry-over year, so the early-W205 launch problems had largely been worked through. Consumer Reports owner data still lists driveline, electrical and in-car electronics trouble spots, which puts it slightly ahead of 2017 but well behind class leaders like the Lexus IS.

Brand reliability track record60
#4 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

In the late 2010s, Mercedes-Benz ran near or below the industry average in J.D. Power's Vehicle Dependability Study. It also sat in the lower half of Consumer Reports' brand reliability rankings: behind Lexus, Toyota, Mazda and BMW, and ahead of Alfa Romeo and Land Rover.

Recall & TSB history50
#7 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

Nineteen NHTSA campaigns list MY2018 C-Class variants, and several are safety-system recalls that cover the sedan. They include an occupant-classification airbag sensor recall (104,663 units), a front airbag clockspring recall, a steering-rack locknut that could break, rear-window and sunroof glass bonding, an unsecured 12V battery bracket and a battery-cable cover. Several other seat and body campaigns cover only the coupe and cabriolet, and none is powertrain-systemic.

Powertrain durability reputation63
#6 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The volume C 300 carries over the M274 2.0L turbo four (241 hp) with the 9G-Tronic 9-speed automatic, which was in its second year in the C 300. The 9G-Tronic has proven durable across the Mercedes line. The M274 is broadly sound but has owner reports of oil leaks, camshaft-adjuster noise and cylinder-1 piston cracking at higher mileage.

Interior material quality86
#1 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

Reviewers widely rated the W205 cabin the best in the compact luxury class, with open-pore wood, metal switchgear and extensive soft-touch surfaces. The main criticism is the COMAND touchpad/controller layout.

Fit & finish73
#5 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

Panel gaps and interior assembly are tight, but several 2018 recalls point to assembly and supplier slips: rear-window and sunroof glass bonding, an unsecured battery bracket, a battery-cable cover and misaimed headlights. Owners also report sealing issues and scattered rattles.

Dealer & service network80
#3 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

Mercedes-Benz USA has roughly 380 dealers across all 50 states, covering major metros and most secondary markets. Its service satisfaction is mid-pack among luxury brands, level with BMW, Audi and Lexus.

Parts availability & repair cost55
#3 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The W205 sold in high volume over a long run, so parts are readily available and the aftermarket is large. Out-of-warranty repair and maintenance costs still run well above mainstream sedans, especially for electronics, sunroof and turbo-engine work.

7Technology & InfotainmentOne of the C-Class's weakest categories.0.76F
Touchscreen size
7 in center display standard (8.4 in with Multimedia Package); not a touchscreen, rotary controller + touchpad
0/100
#2 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The pre-facelift 2018 C 300 comes standard with a 7-inch dash-top COMAND display, and an 8.4-inch screen with navigation is optional. Neither is a touchscreen, and the 10.25-inch display arrived with the 2019 facelift.

Infotainment UX & responsiveness50
#5 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The COMAND interface is run through a rotary knob with a touchpad on top. Menus are deep and take time to learn, and the small base screen dates it, though some reviewers found it intuitive once learned.

Wireless CarPlay / Android Auto35
#6 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are not standard for 2018. They come only with the optional Smartphone Integration package and work only over a wired USB connection.

Voice control & native navigation45
#6 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

Hard-drive COMAND navigation and fuller voice control come only in the optional Multimedia Package, so the volume car has no native navigation. The pre-MBUX voice control is command-based.

Audio system quality70
#4 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The base system with CD, dual USB, an SD reader and HD radio is decent. A well-regarded Burmester surround system is optional.

Digital instrument cluster25
#7 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The 2018 C-Class has no fully digital cluster. It uses analog gauges with a small multifunction screen between them, and the 12.3-inch digital cluster arrived with the 2019 facelift.

OTA update capability20
#3 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The W205's COMAND system has no meaningful over-the-air vehicle software updates, and map updates are dealer- or download-based.

Companion app & remote functions55
#2 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The mbrace (Mercedes me) connected services, included for five years, offer remote lock and unlock and vehicle locate through a phone app. There is no digital key.

Charging ports & device power45
#1 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

Two USB-A ports sit in the front console, and USB-C came only with the 2019 facelift. Rear device charging is minimal, and wireless charging is an option.

Keyless & remote access55
#5 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

Push-button start is standard, but KEYLESS-GO proximity entry needs the optional Premium Package and the hands-free trunk is optional. Both became standard only for 2020.

Camera & parking aids60
#2 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

A rearview camera is standard. Parking sensors, the 360-degree Surround View camera and Active Parking Assist are in optional packages.

Head-up display availability58
#2 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

A head-up display is offered, but as an extra-cost option that is rare on volume cars.

8Use-Case FitGrades below the middle of the scale.1.05D
Kid & car-seat practicality50
#4 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

Rear doors and LATCH are workable, but 35.2 in of rear legroom leaves rear-facing seats tight, and the low rear cushion does not help. The 12.6 cu ft trunk struggles with a stroller plus shopping.

Family safety package64
#3 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

Collision Prevention Assist Plus with autonomous braking and Attention Assist are standard. Blind Spot Assist needs the Premium Package, and adaptive cruise and lane-keeping sit in the costly Driver Assistance Package.

Family road-trip comfort50
#5 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The ride is quiet and comfortable, but the low rear cushion, the lack of standard rear climate or heated seats, and the small trunk limit four-up road trips.

Daily driving ease72
#3 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

A compliant ride, a quiet cabin, a torquey engine and the new-for-2018 nine-speed automatic make it an easy commuter. The abrupt stop/start and fiddly controls cost points.

Commuting cost efficiency50
#7 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

Economy is reasonable for a turbo four at around the mid-20s mpg combined, but it needs premium fuel and German-luxury maintenance and run-flat tires.

Parking & maneuverability68
#4 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The compact footprint and average turning circle suit city use. Parking sensors and surround view are optional.

Work capability12
#4 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The C 300 sedan has no US tow rating and only a small trunk, so it is not a work vehicle.

Durability for work duty25
#4 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

It is a luxury-oriented car with delicate trim and expensive repairs, unsuited to hard use.

Jobsite & upfit practicality10
#4 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

It has no onboard power outlets, tie-down or upfit ecosystem, or washable surfaces.

Long-distance comfort & range68
#4 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

It is a quiet, composed highway cruiser with supportive front seats and decent range. Adaptive cruise, lane centering and CarPlay all cost extra.

Outdoor & adventure capability30
#5 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

4MATIC AWD helps on gravel and in snow, but low ground clearance, no tow rating and no outlets keep it pavement-oriented.

Gear & luggage flexibility40
#5 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The standard 40/20/40 rear seat allows long items, but the 12.6 cu ft trunk is small and there is no factory hitch.

9Driving ExperienceOne of the C-Class's strongest categories.2.59C+
Handling & agility75
#4 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The W205 C 300 corners with composure and balances sport and comfort well, though a BMW 3 Series or Alfa Romeo Giulia is sharper.

Steering feel60
#6 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The steering is precise but light on feedback, and it can feel somewhat unresponsive.

Braking confidence74
#4 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

Braking is strong and consistent with a progressive pedal, typical of the W205. No 2018-specific instrumented stopping data was found.

Powertrain smoothness & response70
#4 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The M274 turbo four delivers instant low-end boost, and the new-for-2018 9G-Tronic shifts smoothly. Auto stop/start is abrupt, and multi-gear kickdowns can pause.

Drivetrain noise & vibration60
#6 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

It is quiet when cruising, but the four-cylinder sounds coarse and unrefined under load for a luxury car.

Turning circle
~36.8 ft (RWD; slightly larger with 4MATIC)
53/100
#5 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The turning circle is mid-pack for a compact RWD-based sedan. The W205 sedan body is unchanged from 2015 to 2021.

Driving position & ergonomics68
#7 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The power tilt-and-telescoping wheel, 10-way seats and good sightlines help. The column gear selector and knob-plus-touchpad controls take learning, though reviewers praise the logical layout.

Fun-to-drive factor67
#4 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The C 300 is enjoyable and quick, but the numb steering and coarse engine note keep it short of enthusiast favorites. The AMG C43 and C63 variants are a different story.

10Value & Market PositionThe C-Class's best-graded category.2.71B-
Standard equipment generosity58
#5 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The 2018 C 300 comes standard with a 241-hp turbo four, a 9-speed automatic, a 7-in central display, a rearview camera, power front seats, MB-Tex upholstery and Collision Prevention Assist Plus. Heated seats, blind-spot assist, keyless-go, LED headlights, navigation and smartphone integration are split across option packages, so a well-equipped car costs thousands more.

Feature value per dollar60
#7 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

At about $41–43k before options, the C 300 prices level with the BMW 330i and Audi A4 and delivers a more upscale cabin than either. Package pricing quickly pushes it toward $50k, and owners rate value as its weakest trait.

Trim & configuration breadth82
#3 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The 2018 sedan spans the C 300 (RWD or 4MATIC), the C 350e plug-in hybrid, the AMG C 43 4MATIC, and the AMG C 63 and C 63 S, with many option packages, from about $41k to about $75k. It is one of the broadest lineups in the class.

Sales popularity & market acceptance74
#1 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The C-Class remained the best-selling compact luxury car in the US in 2018, well ahead of the BMW 3 Series. However, volume fell 22% year over year as buyers shifted to crossovers such as the GLC.

Brand desirability & image90
#1 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

Mercedes-Benz is a top-tier aspirational luxury brand, and the C-Class is its core gateway sedan with a strong, loyal following.

Deals & incentive availability72
#4 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

With C-Class sales falling in 2018, Mercedes-Benz Financial Services leaned on subsidized C 300 leases and dealer cash. Discounts of several thousand dollars below sticker were common, and outgoing pre-facelift stock was discounted further ahead of the MY2019 update.

Model freshness64
#3 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

2018 is the fourth model year of the W205 generation, which launched for MY2015, and the final pre-facelift year. The MY2019 facelift added the M264 engine, a digital cluster and updated driver assists, so a 2018 buyer was buying an outgoing version.

Critical reception & awards73
#3 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

Reviewers still praised the 2018 C-Class for its style, cabin and power, and it scored near the top of its class. It slipped to #3 in KBB's compact luxury ranking as newer rivals such as the Alfa Romeo Giulia and Genesis G70 arrived.
