The verdict

A mixed-report compact luxury sedan, strong on technology and held back by efficiency.

The 2022 C-Class was the launch year of the redesigned W206 generation, and it shows in both directions. It has one of the nicest cabins in the class, S-Class-style screens and an IIHS Top Safety Pick+. As the first year of a new design it also carries nine recalls and the usual teething problems. Running costs are high too: premium fuel at about $2,950 a year, only a 4-year/50,000-mile warranty on the engine and transmission, and no free scheduled maintenance. Buy one for the interior and the badge, favor a car with its recall work done, and budget for Mercedes service bills.

Detailed scoring by subject

1Performance & PowertrainGrades below the middle of the scale.1.56D
Horsepower
255 hp (C300, only sedan powertrain for 2022)
32/100
#3 of 10 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

2022 is the first US model year of the W206 generation, and the only sedan offered was the C300: a 2.0L turbo I4 with a 48V integrated starter-generator, rated at 255 hp. The AMG C43 sedan did not arrive until MY2023.

Torque
295 lb-ft (C300)
53/100
#3 of 10 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The C300's 2.0L turbo makes 295 lb-ft peak torque, with brief EQ Boost assist from the ISG on top of that.

0–60 mph time
5.9 s (manufacturer, C300); 5.3–5.5 s instrumented
55/100
#4 of 10 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

Mercedes quotes 5.9 s for the 2022 C300. Instrumented tests beat that: MotorWeek ran 5.5 s, and a 2022 C300 4MATIC was timed at 5.3 s.

Powertrain refinement70
#6 of 10 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The 48V starter-generator gives seamless restarts and strong low-end torque with little turbo lag. The four-cylinder is plain-sounding and coarser than the sixes some rivals offer when worked hard.

Transmission behavior73
#6 of 10 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The 9G-TRONIC 9-speed automatic shifts smoothly and unobtrusively in daily driving and quickly enough in Sport, with occasional slow kickdowns from a cruise.

AWD/4WD availability72
#6 of 10 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

4MATIC AWD is available on the C300, the only sedan trim, and is the common US configuration. Its operation is basic, with no torque vectoring or terrain modes, and no AMG 4MATIC variant existed for 2022.

Powertrain lineup breadth35
#10 of 10 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

One powertrain only for 2022: the C300 2.0L turbo mild hybrid, with RWD or 4MATIC. There was no AMG sedan, plug-in or EV, since the AMG C43 came for MY2023 and the C63 S E Performance for MY2024.

NHTSA overall rating
Not rated by NHTSA (2022 W206, RWD and 4MATIC)
0/100
#8 of 10 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

NHTSA never crash-tested the redesigned 2022 W206 C-Class; both sedan variants are listed Not Rated overall and on every sub-rating. Per the framework definition, never-rated scores 0 rather than an inferred star count.

IIHS awards & crashworthiness88
#2 of 10 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The redesigned 2022 C-Class earned the IIHS 2022 Top Safety Pick+ with Good ratings in every crashworthiness test (both small overlaps, moderate overlap, side, roof strength with a 6.3 strength-to-weight ratio, head restraints). The award depends on the optional front crash prevention and the Good-rated headlights, keeping it just below the top of the band.

Standard ADAS suite breadth66
#6 of 10 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

Every 2022 C 300 gets Active Brake Assist (AEB with pedestrian detection), Blind Spot Assist with exit warning, Attention Assist and parking sensors. Adaptive cruise (Distronic), lane-keeping/centering (Active Steering Assist) and rear automatic braking all sit in the optional Driver Assistance Package — IIHS even lists lane departure warning as optional for 2022 — a thin standard suite for a luxury sedan.

Automatic emergency braking performance76
#5 of 10 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

Vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention is Superior on both standard and optional systems, and the optional system is Superior for pedestrians day and night. The standard system is Advanced in daytime and only Basic at night for pedestrians, which holds the score below the optional system's ceiling.

Blind-spot & cross-traffic coverage72
#4 of 10 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

Blind Spot Assist with Exit Warning is standard on every 2022 C-Class. Active Blind Spot Assist with braking intervention and rear cross-traffic/rear automatic braking require optional packages, so the base car is alert-only.

Lane keeping & centering70
#3 of 10 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

Active Lane Keeping Assist and Active Steering Assist lane centering come with the Driver Assistance Package, where reviewers find the centering smooth and well-judged. IIHS lists even lane departure warning as optional on the 2022, so a base car has little lane assistance.

Adaptive cruise & highway assist78
#2 of 10 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

Active Distance Assist Distronic offers full-speed stop-and-go with route-based speed adaptation and, paired with Active Steering Assist, a well-integrated highway assist. Refined behavior, but optional on every 2022 C 300 rather than standard.

Hands-free driving availability20
#2 of 10 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

No hands-free driving mode is offered on the 2022 C-Class; Active Steering Assist requires hands on the wheel. Mercedes' Level 3 Drive Pilot came to the US only later and only on the S-Class and EQS.

Headlight performance82
#2 of 10 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The standard LED projector headlights with LED reflector high beams rate Good at IIHS, so the volume trim gets the better lamps; the optional curve-adaptive LED projector setup rates Acceptable. High-beam assist is fitted on both variations.

Outward visibility72
#1 of 10 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

A conventional three-box sedan with reasonable forward sightlines, but the high beltline and thick C-pillars create rear-quarter blind zones. A rearview camera and parking sensors are standard; the 360-degree camera is optional.

Child-seat (LATCH) usability80
#1 of 10 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

IIHS rates LATCH ease of use Good on the 2022 C-Class, with two full sets of outboard lower anchors. Rear space is tight for three-across or bulky rear-facing seats, typical of compact luxury sedans.

4Space & ComfortMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.98C-
Seating capacity
5 seats
100/100
#1 of 10 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

Every 2022 C300 sedan (RWD and 4MATIC), the only sedan offered in the first US model year of the W206, seats five.

Front headroom
37.2 in (with standard sunroof)
30/100
#9 of 10 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

Every 2022 C300 has a sunroof as standard, which leaves front headroom below average for the class.

Front legroom
41.7 in
43/100
#7 of 10 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

Front legroom is adequate and mid-pack for compact luxury sedans.

Rear headroom
37.5 in
63/100
#3 of 10 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

Rear headroom is reasonable on paper for a compact sedan with a sloping roofline.

Rear legroom
36.0 in
40/100
#1 of 10 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The W206's longer wheelbase (112.8 in) improved rear space over the W205, and The Drive rates it slightly roomier than the 3 Series and A4. It is still modest against the wider sedan band, and the tall center tunnel limits the middle seat.

Cargo/trunk volume
12.6 cu ft
26/100
#4 of 10 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The trunk is small for the class and trails the 3 Series' 17 cu ft. The Drive's 17.9 cu ft figure does not match the US-published spec.

In-cabin storage & clever solutions60
#2 of 10 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

Storage is competitive but unremarkable: a covered console bin and 40/20/40 folding rear seatbacks, with small door pockets. The wireless-charging tray is not on the base Premium trim.

Seat comfort70
#6 of 10 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The heated power front seats are supportive and the cabin is described as plush. MB-Tex synthetic upholstery is standard, and rear-seat space limits long-trip comfort for adults.

Ride quality68
#7 of 10 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The standard steel suspension rides smoothly and comfortably. The popular AMG Line/sport setup on larger wheels is firmer over broken pavement.

Cabin quietness72
#6 of 10 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

Wind and road noise are well isolated for the class. The augmented four-cylinder sound is more present inside than some expect.

Climate & comfort features68
#3 of 10 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

Heated power front seats, dual-zone climate and a sunroof are standard. Ventilated seats, the heated steering wheel and the panorama roof are extra-cost options on every trim.

5Cost of OwnershipOne of the C-Class's weakest categories.0.35F
Base MSRP
$44,600 (C 300 Premium RWD: $43,550 + $1,050 destination)
32/100
#8 of 10 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The 2022 C 300 Sedan, the launch year of the W206 generation in the US, started at $43,550 plus a $1,050 destination charge. The C 300 was the only sedan model offered for 2022.

Volume-Trim Price
~$49,000 (C 300 4MATIC, typically optioned; $46,600 Premium 4MATIC incl. destination)
26/100
#7 of 10 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The C 300 4MATIC is the volume configuration. It lists at $45,550 plus destination for the Premium trim, $47,800 for Exclusive and $49,500 for Pinnacle, so a typically equipped dealer-stock car lands near $49,000.

5-Year Maintenance & Repair Cost
~$7,700 over 5 years (maintenance + repairs)
20/100
#8 of 10 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

Scheduled dealer A/B services cost a lot, and once the 4-year/50k warranty lapses, repair spend rises in years 4–5. That puts 5-year maintenance and repairs near the top of the sedan band, consistent with the 2023 W206 estimate.

5-Year Resale Value Retention
~47% retained after 5 years
40/100
#6 of 10 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The 2022 C-Class had lost about 41% by year 3, and entry-luxury sedan depreciation continues through year 5. That puts it at roughly 47–52% lost after 5 years.

Basic warranty
4 yr / 50,000 mi (bumper-to-bumper)
50/100
#1 of 10 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The Mercedes-Benz New Vehicle Limited Warranty covers 4 years / 50,000 miles, which is typical for the luxury segment.

Powertrain warranty
4 yr / 50,000 mi (no separate powertrain coverage)
0/100
#4 of 10 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

Mercedes-Benz offers no longer, separate powertrain warranty, so the powertrain is covered only under the 4-year/50k basic warranty. That falls below the bottom of the sedan band.

Complimentary maintenance & perks40
#9 of 10 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The 2022 C-Class includes no complimentary scheduled maintenance; buyers must buy a Prepaid Maintenance plan. Roadside Assistance for the warranty term and a Mercedes me connect trial are included, which trails BMW, Genesis and Volvo, all of which include several years of maintenance.

Effective 5-Year Ownership Cost
$33,670 (≈$25,970 depreciation + $7,700 maintenance)
37/100
#6 of 10 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

$49,000 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (47% retained, or about $23,030) leaves about $25,970 in depreciation. Add the projected $7,700 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $33,670 in total.

6Reliability & QualityMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.94C-
Predicted reliability45
#9 of 10 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

2022 is the launch model year of the all-new W206 C-Class in the US (C 300 sedan only), and first-year teething problems show: Consumer Reports' owner data for the 2022 car trails the later 2023–2024 years, and owners most often cite infotainment glitches, electrical faults and a clunky downshifting transmission. Below-average predicted reliability for a compact luxury sedan.

Brand reliability track record62
#4 of 10 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

Mercedes-Benz has sat below industry average in J.D. Power's Vehicle Dependability Study and in the lower third of Consumer Reports' brand reliability rankings through the early 2020s — behind Lexus, Toyota, Mazda and BMW, though ahead of Alfa Romeo and Land Rover.

Recall & TSB history44
#10 of 10 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

Nine NHTSA campaigns cover the MY2022 W206 C 300, including two unique to the launch year: trunk moisture shorting the rear SAM module (lighting/camera failure, fire risk) and a DISTRONIC hands-off-detection software fault. Shared campaigns with 2023 add two fuel-pump loss-of-drive-power recalls, a wrong-length transmission harness, unsecured harness grounds and an under-torqued pre-fuse-box bolt (overheating/fire), plus a seat-belt cover and a door-lock rollaway recall — a repeated, systemic electrical pattern.

Powertrain durability reputation60
#9 of 10 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The C 300's M254 2.0L turbo four with 48V integrated starter-generator debuted in the US with this model year and had no long-term record; the 9G-Tronic 9-speed automatic is a proven unit. No systemic engine or gearbox failure has emerged, but launch-year cars carry the fuel-pump and transmission-harness recalls (both loss of drive power) and owners report clunky downshifts.

Interior material quality90
#1 of 10 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The W206 cabin borrows its design and MBUX portrait touchscreen from the S-Class, with rich trim, ambient lighting and upscale finishes that reviewers rank at or near the top of the compact luxury class. Some piano-black and haptic surfaces draw minor criticism.

Fit & finish74
#5 of 10 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

Visible panel fit and trim alignment are tight, but the first-year W206 build had real assembly-quality slips: trunk water ingress reaching the SAM module, unsecured harness grounds, an under-torqued pre-fuse-box bolt and a mis-installed seat-belt cover all reached recall stage, alongside owner complaints of infotainment glitches.

Dealer & service network80
#2 of 10 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

Mercedes-Benz USA has roughly 380 dealers across all 50 states, covering major metros and most secondary markets; luxury-brand service satisfaction is mid-pack against BMW, Audi and Lexus.

Parts availability & repair cost50
#7 of 10 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

Parts are readily available through the dealer network but expensive and largely dealer-sourced for the newer W206; aftermarket support for the generation is still developing, and out-of-warranty 48V and electronics repairs can be costly.

7Technology & InfotainmentThe C-Class's best-graded category.2.80B-
Touchscreen size
11.9 in portrait (standard on all trims)
58/100
#2 of 10 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The 11.9-inch portrait MBUX screen is standard on every 2022 C300 trim.

Infotainment UX & responsiveness63
#7 of 10 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The second-gen MBUX screen is sharp and fast. All HVAC functions are in the touchscreen, there is no console knob, and the steering-wheel controls, volume included, are touch-sensitive — one of The Drive's two notable flaws.

Wireless CarPlay / Android Auto90
#3 of 10 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard on every 2022 C300.

Voice control & native navigation72
#4 of 10 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

'Hey Mercedes' natural-language voice control is standard. Built-in MB navigation and AR video navigation come only on the Pinnacle trim or as options, so the volume Premium car relies on phone projection.

Audio system quality77
#4 of 10 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

Base audio is adequate. The Burmester 3D surround system is a genuine upgrade but needs the Exclusive trim or above.

Digital instrument cluster85
#3 of 10 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

A crisp, configurable 12.3-inch digital driver display is standard.

OTA update capability62
#4 of 10 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

MBUX takes over-the-air updates for infotainment software and map data, but not feature-adding whole-vehicle updates; that came later with MB.OS.

Companion app & remote functions70
#4 of 10 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The Mercedes me app offers remote lock/unlock, remote start and vehicle locate. Premium services go to paid tiers after the complimentary period, and there is no phone-as-key.

Charging ports & device power66
#4 of 10 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

USB-C ports are standard up front. Wireless charging needs the Exclusive trim, extra USB ports are optional, and there is no household outlet.

Keyless & remote access70
#5 of 10 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

Push-button start, app remote start and a power trunk closer are standard. Full KEYLESS-GO hands-free access is package- or trim-dependent, and no phone-as-key is offered.

Camera & parking aids70
#4 of 10 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

A rear camera is standard. The 360-degree surround view and Active Parking Assist come with the Exclusive trim or are optional on Premium.

Head-up display availability64
#2 of 10 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The head-up display is limited to the top Pinnacle trim.

8Use-Case FitOne of the C-Class's weakest categories.1.06D
Kid & car-seat practicality62
#2 of 10 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

Rear-door access and the class-competitive rear seat help, but the center hump and a small 12.6 cu ft trunk make stroller-plus-gear days a squeeze.

Family safety package74
#5 of 10 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

Pre-Safe, Active Brake Assist, blind-spot assist and Safe Exit Assist are standard, but the fuller Driver Assistance Package is an extra-cost option and the car carries no NHTSA rating.

Family road-trip comfort57
#4 of 10 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

Quiet and comfortable up front, but modest rear space and a 12.6 cu ft trunk limit multi-hour trips for four with luggage.

Daily driving ease70
#8 of 10 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The mild-hybrid torque and seamless stop-start make traffic easy. The oddly calibrated brake pedal and touch-only controls add daily friction.

Commuting cost efficiency40
#10 of 10 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

Economy is decent for a luxury sedan, but premium fuel and Mercedes maintenance costs make it an expensive commuter.

Parking & maneuverability72
#4 of 10 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The compact footprint and 36.8 ft turning circle suit town driving. Surround view needs the Exclusive trim or an option.

Work capability8
#9 of 10 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

It has no US tow rating and a small trunk; it is not a work vehicle.

Durability for work duty20
#10 of 10 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

A luxury interior, low-profile wheels and a first-year mild-hybrid powertrain are poorly suited to hard work use.

Jobsite & upfit practicality8
#9 of 10 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

There is no power outlet, tie-down provision, roof rail or hitch.

Long-distance comfort & range70
#6 of 10 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

Long range (~480+ mi) and a comfortable, well-insulated ride make it a good tourer. Distronic and Active Steering Assist are options, not standard.

Outdoor & adventure capability24
#8 of 10 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

4MATIC AWD helps in bad weather, but low ground clearance, no tow rating and no roof rails keep it on pavement.

Gear & luggage flexibility32
#9 of 10 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

Split-folding rear seatbacks add flexibility, but the trunk is small and there are no rails or hitch.

9Driving ExperienceOne of the C-Class's strongest categories.2.53C+
10Value & Market PositionOne of the C-Class's strongest categories.2.74B-
Standard equipment generosity71
#4 of 10 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The 2022 C 300 comes standard with an 11.9-in MBUX portrait touchscreen, a 12.3-in digital cluster, wireless CarPlay/Android Auto, LED headlights and core active safety. Heated seats, a 360 camera, Burmester audio and advanced driver assists sit in the Exclusive/Pinnacle tiers and option packages, and chip-shortage deletions left some early cars missing features.

Feature value per dollar66
#9 of 10 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

At $44,600–46,600 with a 255-hp 48V mild-hybrid 2.0T, the C 300 is priced right alongside the BMW 330i. The Genesis G70 undercuts it on content per dollar, and options quickly push it past $50k.

Trim & configuration breadth56
#10 of 10 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

For 2022 the only sedan was the C 300 (RWD or 4MATIC), sold in three package tiers. The AMG C 43 did not arrive until MY2023 and there was no plug-in, so the lineup is far narrower than the BMW 3 Series range (330i, 330e, M340i, M3).

Sales popularity & market acceptance70
#2 of 10 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The C-Class stays one of the top compact luxury sedans in US volume alongside the 3 Series. The W206 launch was delayed to spring 2022, and chip-shortage supply limits held first-year deliveries down while the segment kept shrinking.

Brand desirability & image90
#2 of 10 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

Mercedes-Benz is a top-tier aspirational luxury brand, and the C-Class is its gateway sedan with a strong loyal following.

Deals & incentive availability48
#7 of 10 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The 2022 launch year hit the peak of the chip shortage and low inventory, so there were almost no cash incentives, long order waits and frequent at-or-above-MSRP pricing. Lease subvention and loyalty offers were the only levers.

Model freshness92
#1 of 10 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

2022 is the first US model year of the all-new W206 generation, which brought S-Class-derived MBUX hardware and a standard 48V mild-hybrid powertrain, so there is no redesign risk.

Critical reception & awards70
#6 of 10 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

Reviewers praise the W206's S-Class-inspired cabin, tech and refinement but fault its glitchy infotainment, touch-capacitive controls, squishy brakes and a less engaging drive than the 3 Series. It is well reviewed but rarely the pick of the class.
