The verdict
A mixed-report compact luxury sedan, strong on technology and held back by efficiency.
The 2024 C-Class feels more expensive than it is inside. It has an S-Class-inspired cabin, a sharp 11.9-inch MBUX screen, a quiet ride and an IIHS Top Safety Pick+. The costs come later. Consumer Reports predicts reliability at just 19/100, the powertrain warranty ends at 4 years/50,000 miles, and the C 300 4MATIC burns about $2,950 a year in required premium fuel. Buy it for the cabin and the badge, but budget for ownership costs that run above most rivals.

Detailed scoring by subject
1Performance & PowertrainMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.93C-
The volume 2024 C300 (W206, third model year of the generation that began 2022) uses a turbocharged 2.0L I4 with a 48V integrated starter-generator, rated 255 hp. The AMG C43 (402 hp) and the new AMG C63 S E Performance PHEV (671 hp) sit above it.
The C300's 2.0L turbo produces 295 lb-ft, with the 48V EQ Boost adding short-duration assist on top.
Mercedes quotes 5.9 s 0–60 mph for the C300 4MATIC. That is competitive for an entry luxury sedan, while the AMG trims are dramatically quicker.
The 48V integrated starter-generator smooths stop-start restarts and fills low-rpm response, so delivery is generally smooth. Reviewers still note some turbo lag off idle and a coarser four-cylinder note under hard load than six-cylinder rivals.
The 9G-TRONIC 9-speed automatic shifts smoothly and unobtrusively in daily driving, with occasional hesitation on quick kickdowns. The AMG trims use the sharper SpeedShift MCT.
4MATIC AWD is optional on the C300 and widely chosen. It is standard on the AMG C43 and C63 S E Performance, whose 4MATIC+ systems use a variable torque split.
There are three distinct powertrains: the C300 mild-hybrid turbo-four, the AMG C43's electric-turbo 402 hp four, and the AMG C63 S E Performance plug-in hybrid (671 hp). There is no EV or diesel C-Class in the US.
2Efficiency & RangeThe C-Class's lowest-graded category.0.32F
EPA combined rating for the volume C300 4MATIC (2.0L turbo I4, 48V mild hybrid, 9-speed). The RWD C300 is rated 30 MPG combined.
EPA city rating for the C300 4MATIC volume trim.
EPA highway rating for the C300 4MATIC volume trim.
EPA-listed total range for the C300 4MATIC, from its 17.4-gal tank and 27 MPG combined.
EPA's annual fuel cost estimate at 15,000 mi/yr on premium fuel. The premium requirement pushes it near the top of the sedan band.
Every US C-Class requires premium unleaded (91+ octane), with no regular-fuel, flex-fuel or diesel alternative. Only the AMG C63 S E Performance offers any plug-in charging.
3SafetyMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.12C
NHTSA has not crash-tested the W206 C-Class: every overall, frontal, side and rollover field for the 2024 sedan reads 'Not Rated'. Per the framework, an untested model records 0 stars. The IIHS results below are the only independent crash data for this year.
The 2024 C-Class earned the IIHS 2024 Top Safety Pick+ under the tougher 2024 criteria. It rated Good in small overlap front (driver and passenger), both the original and updated moderate overlap front tests, and the side test. Roof strength and head restraints were not rated under the current protocol.
Every 2024 C 300 has Active Brake Assist (AEB with pedestrian detection), Blind Spot Assist, Attention Assist and auto high beams as standard. Adaptive cruise (Distronic), Active Steering Assist lane centering, active lane keeping and rear cross-traffic all sit in the optional Driver Assistance Package; NHTSA even lists lane departure warning as optional. That is thin for a luxury car at this price.
In IIHS pedestrian testing the standard Active Brake Assist rates only Acceptable, while the optional Active Brake Assist with Cross-Traffic function (Driver Assistance package) rates Good. The IIHS page carries no vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention result. Strong when optioned, merely adequate as standard.
Blind Spot Assist, including the exit warning that alerts occupants to approaching traffic before they open a door, is standard. Active Blind Spot Assist with braking intervention and cross-traffic functions need the Driver Assistance Package. Standard coverage is therefore alert-only.
When equipped with the Driver Assistance Package, Active Steering Assist centers the car smoothly and reviewers rate it among the better systems in the class. Without the package, lane departure warning is not even standard (NHTSA lists it as optional), so the volume car can lack lane assistance entirely.
Active Distance Assist Distronic covers the full speed range with stop-and-go, and adds route-based speed adaptation for curves, junctions and speed limits. Reviewers find it smooth and natural. It is marked down because it is optional (Driver Assistance Package), not standard, on the C 300.
The C-Class has no hands-free driving mode: Mercedes' Drive Pilot (Level 3) was limited in 2024 to the S-Class and EQS in California and Nevada. The C-Class Driver Assistance Package requires hands on the wheel.
IIHS rates the standard LED projector headlights with high-beam assist, fitted to the volume Premium/Exclusive configurations, as Good. The optional Digital Light and the Pinnacle setup rate Acceptable. Good-rated lights on the volume trim is a strong result.
The conventional three-box sedan gives decent forward and side sightlines, but the high beltline and thick C-pillars limit the rear-quarter view. A 360-degree camera is optional (Parking Package) rather than standard on the C 300.
IIHS rates the LATCH hardware Good, with complete anchor sets at two rear positions and a tether-only center seat. The compact rear seat makes rear-facing seats and three-across installations tight.
4Space & ComfortMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.47C+
Every 2024 C-Class sedan (C 300, C 300 4MATIC, AMG C 43, AMG C 63 S E Performance) seats five: two front, three rear.
40.0 in of front headroom is generous for a compact luxury sedan and sits at the top of the sedan band.
Front legroom is adequate but mid-pack for the class; tall drivers fit, though the console is intrusive.
Rear headroom is decent for a compact sedan; the W206 roofline tapers less than fastback rivals such as the CLA.
Rear legroom is still tight even though the W206 grew its wheelbase. Adults fit behind average-height front occupants, but knee room runs out behind taller ones.
The 12.6 cu ft trunk is smallish for the segment and trails the BMW 3 Series (17.0 cu ft) and Genesis G70 by a wide margin.
Everyday storage is competent: a covered console bin, a wireless-charging tray, door pockets and 40/20/40 split-folding rear seatbacks. Nothing stands out, and the sweeping center stack leaves limited open space for small items.
The front seats are well-cushioned with a wide power-adjustment range, and 2024 trims offer lumbar support and optional multicontour/massage seats. The rear bench is supportive but knee room is tight for long stints.
The C 300's steel-spring suspension gives a composed, controlled ride that turns firm over sharp impacts on the larger AMG Line wheels, but it is never harsh. The ride leans more comfortable than sporty.
The cabin is hushed at highway speed, with well-suppressed wind and road noise. The turbo-four becomes audible and a bit coarse under hard acceleration.
Dual-zone automatic climate and heated front seats are standard. Ventilated front seats, heated rear seats and a heated steering wheel are available on Exclusive/Pinnacle trims or in packages, so the richest comfort kit costs extra.
5Cost of OwnershipOne of the C-Class's weakest categories.0.40F
The 2024 C 300 RWD sedan listed at $46,950 plus $1,150 destination, for $48,100 — near the expensive end of the sedan band, as expected for a compact luxury sedan.
The C 300 4MATIC is the volume configuration in the US; its 2024 MSRP was $48,950 plus $1,150 destination. Typical dealer stock carries Premium/Exclusive packages that add several thousand dollars.
Mercedes A/B service pricing is high and nothing is included free, and repair costs rise sharply once the 4-year/50k warranty ends. Edmunds projects $0 repairs for years 1–3, then $1,185 and $1,822 in years 4 and 5, on top of annual service.
Industry data puts 5-year C-Class depreciation at about 48–50%, a little worse than the luxury compact class average of about 46%. The 2024 model lost about 19% in its first two years, which fits that trend.
The 2024 C-Class has Mercedes-Benz's standard 4-year/50,000-mile New Vehicle Limited Warranty, which is typical for luxury brands.
Powertrain coverage ends with the basic warranty at 4 years/50,000 miles, below the 5-year floor of the sedan band. Genesis (10 yr/100k), Lexus and Cadillac (6 yr/70k) all offer longer coverage.
Scheduled maintenance is not included; buyers must buy Mercedes-Benz Prepaid Maintenance separately. Unlimited-mileage roadside assistance for the warranty term and a Mercedes me connect trial are included, but BMW (3 yr/36k) and Genesis include scheduled service.
$50,100 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (50% retained, or about $25,050) leaves about $25,050 in depreciation. Add the projected $7,900 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $32,950 in total.
6Reliability & QualityMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.22C
Consumer Reports gives the 2024 C-Class a predicted reliability score of just 19/100, and says the below-average reliability of new Mercedes models drags down its overall score. That puts it well below the compact-luxury median, near the bottom of the range next to the Alfa Romeo Giulia.
Mercedes-Benz sits in the lower half of the Consumer Reports brand rankings and below the industry average in J.D. Power's VDS in recent years. It is not in the bottom tier with Land Rover or Alfa Romeo, but it is far behind Lexus and Toyota.
NHTSA lists three recalls that cover the 2024 model year. The fuel-pump recall is significant because a failed pump causes loss of drive power. The 80-amp fuse and seat-belt cover recalls are narrower. Recall activity is typical to slightly above typical, and there is no repeated systemic defect.
The C300's M254 2.0L turbo four with its 48V integrated starter-generator is a newer design with limited long-term data, and the mild-hybrid electrics add complexity. The 9G-Tronic 9-speed automatic has a solid record. The fuel-pump recall affected drivability, but it was a supplier part, not an engine defect.
The W206 cabin borrows its design and materials from the S-Class, with open-pore wood, metal trim, rich ambient lighting and a portrait MBUX screen. Reviewers consistently call it one of the nicest interiors in the compact-luxury class.
Assembly is tight and consistent, and reviewers praise the tactile quality. Owner complaints focus on infotainment and electronic glitches rather than rattles or panel misalignment, which keeps this score below the top of the band.
Mercedes-Benz has roughly 380 US dealers covering all 50 states, one of the densest luxury networks. Service satisfaction is mid-pack among luxury brands.
Parts are readily available but expensive and mostly bought through dealers. Out-of-warranty repairs to the 48V system and electronics can be costly, so repair costs run well above mainstream sedans.
7Technology & InfotainmentThe C-Class's best-graded category.3.20B+
Every 2024 W206 C-Class has an 11.9-inch portrait-oriented central touchscreen running second-generation MBUX. No larger screen is offered.
MBUX is quick and graphically sharp, but menus are deep and climate controls live in the touchscreen. Reviewers also criticize the capacitive steering-wheel touch pads; the BMW iDrive layout is easier day to day.
Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard on every 2024 C-Class trim.
The "Hey Mercedes" natural-language assistant is capable, and the native MBUX navigation (standard on the Premium trim) offers optional augmented-reality video guidance. Both rank among the stronger factory systems in the class.
The base audio is competent, and the Burmester 3D Surround Sound system (15 speakers, 710 W) is available on Exclusive and Pinnacle trims. It is among the best premium systems in the segment.
A 12.3-inch fully digital driver display with several selectable styles is standard on every 2024 C-Class.
MBUX 2 supports over-the-air infotainment and map updates and some feature downloads. It does not get the whole-vehicle OTA scope of Mercedes' later MB.OS platform or of Tesla/BMW OS8+.
The Mercedes me connect app offers remote start, lock/unlock, vehicle locate and status. Several remote and connected services become paid subscriptions after the included trial term.
There are USB-C ports front and rear, and a wireless charging tray is standard on the 2024 C 300. No household AC outlet is offered.
Push-button start and remote start through the app are standard. KEYLESS-GO proximity entry with Hands-Free Access for the trunk is standard or packaged depending on trim. A phone-as-key feature is not a mainstream C-Class feature for 2024.
A rear camera and parking sensors are available across the range. The 360-degree surround-view camera and Parking Assist come with the optional Parking Package rather than as standard equipment.
A full-color head-up display is offered but restricted to the top Pinnacle trim or its packages. It is not available on the volume Premium C 300.
8Use-Case FitOne of the C-Class's weakest categories.1.19D
IIHS rates the LATCH hardware Good, and conventional sedan door openings make car-seat installs straightforward. With 36.0 in of rear legroom, a rear-facing seat crowds the front passenger, and the 12.6 cu ft trunk is tight for a stroller plus shopping.
The 2024 C-Class earned IIHS Top Safety Pick+ with Good crash ratings across the board. Adaptive cruise, lane centering and cross-traffic braking require the optional Driver Assistance Package, and NHTSA did not rate the car.
A quiet cabin, supportive front seats and 37.5 in of rear headroom make it pleasant for four. Tight rear legroom, a 12.6 cu ft trunk and optional (not standard) rear comfort features such as heated rear seats limit multi-day family trips.
The mild-hybrid 255 hp turbo-four with EQ Boost gives smooth stop/start and easy low-speed torque. The 9-speed automatic is unobtrusive and wireless phone projection is standard. Touch-based climate and steering-wheel controls are the main daily irritants.
The C 300 4MATIC is EPA-rated 27 MPG combined (30 for the RWD model) on required premium fuel, at $2,950/yr. Luxury-brand maintenance and tire costs add to that, so it is an above-average-cost commuter even for the class.
The compact footprint (about 187 in long) and a reasonable turning circle make the car easy to place. Rear-quarter blind zones exist, and the 360-degree camera requires the optional Parking Package; rear-axle steering is optional.
The C-Class has no US tow rating, no bed and a 12.6 cu ft trunk. It is not meaningfully work-capable.
Luxury upholstery, a glossy center stack with a large touchscreen, and low-profile performance tires make it unsuited to hard work use.
There is no AC outlet, no factory hitch or roof rails, and no upfit ecosystem.
It is a quiet, comfortable highway cruiser with about 470 miles of EPA range for the 4MATIC (522 for RWD). Distronic adaptive cruise with Active Steering Assist is available to reduce fatigue, though it is optional and the rear seat is tight for four adults.
Optional 4MATIC AWD helps in snow and on graded gravel. Otherwise the car has sedan ground clearance, no US tow rating, no factory roof rails and no camping provisions.
Split-folding rear seatbacks help with long items, but the 12.6 cu ft trunk and narrow opening limit bulky gear. There is no hitch or roof-rail option to add capacity.
9Driving ExperienceOne of the C-Class's strongest categories.2.68C+
The W206 C 300 is composed and secure with good body control, but it is tuned more for comfort than sharpness and trails the BMW 3 Series and Alfa Romeo Giulia for agility. Optional rear-axle steering sharpens turn-in.
Steering is accurate and naturally weighted but offers little road feedback.
The pedal is firm and progressive, and instrumented stops are mid-pack for the class with no reported fade. Regen blending from the 48V system is unobtrusive.
The 48V integrated starter-generator makes stop/start nearly imperceptible and fills low-rpm torque. Reviewers note brief lag off the line and occasional 9-speed indecision at low speeds.
The 2.0L turbo-four is quiet at cruise but sounds coarse and strained at high rpm, below the refinement expected of a Mercedes.
Published W206 turning-circle figures run about 11.1–12.1 m depending on drivetrain and measurement basis. The US curb-to-curb figure for the C 300 is about 37.7 ft, and optional rear-axle steering cuts it noticeably.
Power seats and the steering column have a wide adjustment range and forward sightlines are good. Touchscreen-based climate controls and haptic steering-wheel pads are recurring ergonomic complaints.
The C 300 is pleasant and capable but not especially engaging; enthusiasts are pointed to the 3 Series or the AMG C 43/C 63.
10Value & Market PositionOne of the C-Class's strongest categories.3.01B
The 2024 C 300 comes standard with an 11.9-in MBUX portrait touchscreen, a 12.3-in digital cluster, wireless CarPlay/Android Auto, LED headlights, power memory front seats and a 48V mild-hybrid 2.0T. Heated seats, Burmester audio, adaptive cruise (Driver Assistance Package), HUD and 360° camera remain in option packages, so the base car matches BMW and Audi but trails the loaded-base Genesis G70.
At $48,100–$50,100 before options, the 255-hp C 300 costs slightly more than the BMW 330i and Audi A4, and a Genesis G70 or Acura TLX gives more content or power for less. Packages push typical transaction prices into the mid-$50Ks.
The 2024 sedan range is the C 300 (RWD or 4MATIC) and the AMG C 43 4MATIC, with the AMG C 63 S E Performance PHEV arriving mid-cycle. Package choice is wide, but there is no sub-C 300 entry trim and no US diesel or plug-in hybrid, which leaves a gap compared with the BMW 3 Series lineup (330i/330e/M340i/M3).
The C-Class was the best-selling US compact luxury sedan in 2024, selling more than twice as many units as the BMW 3 Series, even though the segment as a whole is shrinking.
Mercedes-Benz is one of the most aspirational luxury brands, and the C-Class is the main way into the brand's sedans. Mercedes' reliability and dealer-experience reputation is weaker than its image, which keeps this item below the maximum.
Once inventory recovered in 2024, MBFS ran subsidized C 300 lease programs and dealers discounted MY2024 stock heavily into 2025. KBB fair purchase prices now sit well below original MSRP, so buyers had real room to negotiate.
2024 is the third model year of the W206 generation (launched for MY2022), so the platform, MBUX and 48V mild-hybrid powertrains are still current. There was no imminent replacement for 2024 buyers; the W520 successor wasn't unveiled until 2026.
KBB ranked the 2024 C-Class #3 among luxury compact cars with a 4.5/5 expert rating, and IIHS named it a Top Safety Pick+. Reviewers praise the cabin and technology but criticize the firm ride and the less engaging handling compared with the BMW 3 Series and Genesis G70, and it rarely wins comparison tests.
