The verdict
A mixed-report mid-size luxury sedan, strong on safety and held back by efficiency.
The 2019 E-Class is a comfort-first executive sedan. It has a plush, quiet ride, one of the nicest cabins in its class, and top crash-test results: an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ and five NHTSA stars. The costs are steep. The E 300 4MATIC stickered at $57,445 before options, requires premium fuel (about $3,300 a year), has only a 4-year/50,000-mile warranty, and loses more than half its value in five years. Pick one if you want refinement and prestige on long drives, and budget for German running costs and a small 13.1-cu-ft trunk.

Detailed scoring by subject
1Performance & PowertrainGrades below the middle of the scale.1.69D
The 2019 volume E 300 uses the 241-hp 2.0L turbo four (raised to 255 hp and renamed E 350 for 2020); 2019 is a change year above it, with the E 450 V6 replacing the E 400 and the AMG E 53 replacing the E 43.
Peak torque of the E 300's 2.0L turbo four, delivered across a broad low-rpm plateau.
Manufacturer-quoted 0–60 for the E 300 is 6.2 s in RWD form; the heavier 4MATIC volume car is quoted about 0.2 s slower — mid-pack for a four-cylinder mid-size luxury sedan.
The 241-hp turbo-four is smooth and has good low-end pull, but it sounds and feels ordinary for the price and is clearly outclassed by the new-for-2019 E 450 twin-turbo V6.
The 9G-TRONIC nine-speed automatic shifts smoothly and unobtrusively in Comfort mode; occasional hesitation on abrupt kickdowns keeps it just short of the top band.
4MATIC AWD is optional on the E 300 and standard on the E 450 sedan, AMG E 53 and AMG E 63 S, with the AMG models getting fully variable 4MATIC+.
Four distinct gas powertrains (2.0L I4, 3.0L biturbo V6, AMG 53 I6 with EQ Boost mild hybrid, AMG 63 V8) span mainstream to high performance, but no plug-in hybrid, diesel or EV E-Class sedan was sold in the US for 2019.
2Efficiency & RangeThe E-Class's lowest-graded category.0.00F
EPA combined figure for the volume E 300 4MATIC with the 2.0L turbo I4 and 9-speed automatic.
EPA city figure for the volume E 300 4MATIC.
EPA highway figure for the volume E 300 4MATIC.
Computed from the EPA combined rating and the W213 sedan's 17.4-gallon tank.
EPA's current annual fuel cost estimate for the volume trim on required premium fuel.
Premium unleaded is required on every 2019 E-Class sedan powertrain, a persistent running-cost penalty versus regular-fuel rivals; no diesel or US plug-in option.
3SafetyThe E-Class's best-graded category.2.87B-
NHTSA rated both the RWD and 4MATIC 2019 E-Class sedans five stars overall, with five stars in every sub-rating.
The 2019 W213 sedan earned an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ with Good ratings in every crash test, including both small-overlap tests. The award applies only to cars with the optional LED projector headlights, which keeps this item off the top of the band.
On the volume E 300, Active Brake Assist (AEB) and Attention Assist are standard. Blind-spot detection, lane departure warning and prevention, rear automatic braking and DISTRONIC adaptive cruise are all optional, which is thin standard content for a luxury sedan at this price.
The standard Active Brake Assist rates Superior for vehicle-to-vehicle crash prevention. IIHS lists no pedestrian AEB result for the 2019 sedan, day or night, so there is nothing further to credit.
Blind-spot detection and rear automatic braking are both optional on the 2019 sedan. Specified with the Driver Assistance Package, Active Blind Spot Assist adds braking intervention and exit warning, but the volume car isn't guaranteed to have it.
The optional Active Steering Assist centers smoothly, and reviewers rated it among the better systems of its time. It detects hands by steering torque (before the 2021 facelift's capacitive wheel) and is not standard on the E 300.
DISTRONIC with stop-and-go and Active Lane Change Assist is a refined full-speed-range highway assist. It is optional rather than standard on the E 300.
No hands-free driving mode is offered. Active Steering Assist requires hands on the wheel, and DRIVE PILOT was never offered on the W213.
The LED projector lamps with curve-adaptive beams and high-beam assist (Premium II/III packages) rate Good. The base E 300 lamps, which have no curve adaptation or high-beam assist, rate Acceptable.
Sightlines are typical of a mid-size sedan: good forward visibility, with thickish rear pillars and a high trunk deck. A surround-view camera is available in the parking packages.
IIHS rates the E-Class sedan's LATCH hardware Good for ease of use. The rear seat fits two car seats comfortably, but three across is tight.
4Space & ComfortMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.35C+
Every 2019 E-Class sedan seats five.
The standard sunroof costs some headroom, so the figure is only average for a mid-size luxury sedan. The W213 body is unchanged from 2017 to 2020.
Front legroom is adequate for the class but not generous.
Rear headroom is generous for a mid-size sedan.
Rear legroom in the W213 sedan is only adequate and trails the BMW 5 Series and Genesis G80.
The trunk is small for the class, though the 40/20/40 folding rear seat helps with long items.
A center-console bin, a covered cupholder bin and door pockets give competitive everyday storage without anything inventive. The wireless charging pad is a package extra.
The supportive front seats have wide power adjustment with driver memory as standard, and multicontour massage seats are optional. The rear bench is comfortable for two adults.
The standard suspension is compliant and well controlled, and the optional Air Body Control air suspension makes it plusher still. It is tuned for comfort rather than sportiness.
The cabin is hushed at highway speed, with the nine-speed keeping revs low. The E 300's four-cylinder is audible when worked hard.
Dual-zone automatic climate control is standard, but on the 2019 E 300 even heated front seats cost extra in the Convenience or Premium Package. Ventilated and massage seats, a heated wheel and rear climate are further options.
5Cost of OwnershipOne of the E-Class's weakest categories.0.00F
The entry 2019 E 300 rear-drive sedan starts above the sedan band ceiling, as expected for a mid-size luxury car.
The E 300 4MATIC is the volume US sedan configuration. Dealer stock was typically optioned well above the base sticker.
German luxury service pricing for the W213 2.0L turbo puts routine maintenance near $3,700 over five years. Repairs after the 4-yr/50k warranty lapses add a meaningful tail.
The E-Class loses a bit more than the luxury-midsize average over five years, landing mid-band for sedans.
Mercedes-Benz's standard new-vehicle limited warranty runs one year longer than the mainstream 3/36.
Mercedes gives the powertrain no coverage beyond the basic 4/50 warranty, which is below the 5-yr segment floor.
There was no complimentary scheduled maintenance in 2019: Mercedes sold prepaid plans, while BMW included 3-yr/36k ULTIMATE CARE. The perks are 24/7 roadside assistance for the warranty term and a Mercedes me connect trial.
$57,445 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (47% retained, or about $26,999) leaves about $30,446 in depreciation. Add the projected $6,500 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $36,946 in total.
6Reliability & QualityMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.52C+
2019 is the third US model year of the W213 generation (launched for 2017) and a carry-over year for the volume E 300 before the 2020 switch to the E 350. J.D. Power rates the W213 E-Class Average. Consumer Reports has historically run its E-Class reliability below average, with owners citing electrical and COMAND infotainment faults, so the mixed signals put it low in the average band.
Around the 2019 model year Mercedes-Benz sat in the lower half of both the J.D. Power VDS and the Consumer Reports brand rankings. That is ahead of the bottom-tier brands but well behind Lexus, Toyota and Genesis.
The recalls that reach the 2019 E 300 sedan are mostly small batches: fuel injectors, forward-radar sensing, an instrument-cluster seat-belt warning and a steering-rack locknut on some RWD cars. On top of those sit the seat-belt campaign and the fleet-wide eCall software recalls. The larger model-specific campaigns (the E 450 4MATIC driveshaft, AMG E53 electrical, and E63 items) are on other trims. That is typical activity with nothing systemic in the powertrain.
The 2019 E 300 uses the M274 2.0L turbo I4 (241 hp), in service since 2012, paired with the 9G-Tronic 9-speed. The family is mature and has no systemic failure pattern. Known age-related issues include oil seeping from the camshaft adjuster magnets into the wiring harness and some timing-chain rattle reports, which keep it below the top band.
The W213 cabin has open-pore wood, quality leather, 64-color ambient lighting and the 12.3-inch COMAND display. Reviewers rank it among the richest cabins in the mid-size luxury segment. The dated COMAND interface and the optional (not standard) widescreen cockpit leave it short of the very top.
Assembly is solid, with tight panel gaps and a very quiet cabin. Scattered owner reports of rattles and electrical glitches, plus small assembly-related recalls (the fuel-rail contamination and the steering-rack locknut), keep it short of the top band.
About 380 Mercedes-Benz dealers across the US, a denser network than BMW's or Audi's, covering all major metros and most secondary markets. Service satisfaction is mid-pack among luxury brands.
Mercedes parts and labor are among the most expensive in the industry. The W213 is a high-volume, seven-year generation with a strong aftermarket and wide independent-shop familiarity, and the M274 engine is shared across C-, GLC- and E-Class, so parts are plentiful.
7Technology & InfotainmentMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.85C-
The 2019 E 300 gets a large standard 12.3-inch central display, but it is not a touchscreen. Touch arrived with MBUX on the 2021 facelift, and that limitation is scored under 7.1.2.
COMAND has deep menus and relies on a touchpad, rotary controller and steering-wheel touch controls with no touchscreen. Reviewers found it complicated, though it is responsive once learned.
Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard but wired only. Wireless projection is not offered.
COMAND navigation is standard and capable, but LINGUATRONIC voice control is command-based rather than the natural-language assistant that arrived with MBUX.
The base system is decent, the 13-speaker Burmester surround system comes in the Premium Package, and a Burmester High-End 3D system is a further option.
The configurable 12.3-inch digital cluster that completes the widescreen cockpit is excellent, but on the 2019 E 300 it is an extra-cost option. Base cars keep analog gauges beside the central display.
The pre-MBUX COMAND system has no meaningful over-the-air vehicle updates. Map updates are available, and software changes need a dealer visit.
The Mercedes me connect app provides remote start, remote lock and unlock, vehicle locate and status, with some functions subscription-based after the trial. No digital phone key is offered.
Only two USB-A ports are standard, and wireless charging is a package extra. USB-C came only with the 2021 facelift, and rear-seat charging is limited.
Push-button start and app-based remote start are available, but full KEYLESS-GO proximity entry and the hands-free power trunk were optional in 2019; they became standard for 2020. There is no phone-as-key.
A rear camera is standard. A surround-view camera, PARKTRONIC sensors and Active Parking Assist come in the optional Parking Assistance Package.
A color head-up display is an extra-cost option on the E 300 sedan, typically bundled with upper packages rather than fitted to the volume build.
8Use-Case FitOne of the E-Class's weakest categories.1.47D
LATCH access rates Good and the rear doors open wide, but the 13.1-cu-ft trunk and modest rear legroom make strollers and rear-facing seats a squeeze.
It earns an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ and a five-star NHTSA rating, with automatic emergency braking standard. Blind-spot and lane-keeping assists cost extra in packages on the volume E 300.
The ride is plush and quiet with comfortable seats, but rear legroom is only average, rear climate and rear USB are limited, and the small trunk constrains luggage for four.
The smooth turbo four with the nine-speed automatic, a supple ride and a quiet cabin make it relaxing in traffic. Stop-and-go DISTRONIC is optional rather than standard.
Mid-20s combined MPG is decent for a luxury sedan, but premium fuel and costly tires and brakes push per-mile costs above mainstream rivals.
The 38-ft turning circle is decent for the size, but the 194-in body and restricted rear view mean parking relies on the optional surround-view camera and sensors.
Mercedes-Benz USA publishes no towing rating for the E-Class sedan, and the modest trunk limits cargo, so it is not a work vehicle.
It is a luxury-oriented sedan with a complex chassis and electronics, and although E-Class models see taxi and livery service abroad, it is not suited to hard work use.
There is no onboard AC power, no bed and no upfit ecosystem. A few trunk tie-down points and the folding rear seat are the only practical provisions.
It is an excellent highway cruiser: quiet, plush and supportive, with 29–30 mpg highway from a roughly 17-gallon tank giving about 450 miles of highway range. The capable Driver Assistance Package costs extra.
Available 4MATIC all-wheel drive handles snow and gravel roads, but the low ground clearance and lack of a tow rating or factory roof rails leave it pavement-oriented.
The 40/20/40 split rear seat adds a pass-through for skis and long items, but the 13.1-cu-ft trunk is small and there are no roof rails or hitch.
9Driving ExperienceOne of the E-Class's strongest categories.2.54C+
It is secure and well balanced with composed body control, but tuned for comfort. It is less eager than the BMW 5 Series or Jaguar XF.
The steering is precise and naturally weighted but offers little road feedback, which is typical of the class.
The brakes are strong and progressive with a firm, easily modulated pedal, and instrumented 70–0 mph stops are competitive for the class.
The 241-hp turbo four and nine-speed are smooth and well matched with low-rpm torque, but kickdown can lag and the stop/start is noticeable next to the six-cylinder E 450.
The four-cylinder is well isolated at cruise but sounds coarse and unremarkable when worked hard, below the refinement expected of the badge.
The turning circle is average for a mid-size rear-drive luxury sedan.
Power seats with memory and a wide wheel-adjustment range suit all sizes, but the touch-sensitive wheel controls and touchpad-driven COMAND add distraction, and the rear view is restricted.
The E 300 is a satisfying, polished cruiser rather than a driver's car. The fun lives in the E 450 and AMG E 53/E 63 versions.
10Value & Market PositionOne of the E-Class's strongest categories.2.65C+
The base E 300 comes with memory power front seats, dual-zone climate, a 12.3-in display with CarPlay/Android Auto, navigation, LED lighting and a sunroof. The digital cluster, Driver Assistance pkg, Burmester audio and 360 camera all cost extra.
The 241-hp E 300 is priced in line with the BMW 530i and Audi A6 but trails the 530i on power. Steep option pricing makes it fair value, not strong value. The new E 450 improves the upper range.
The sedan came as the E 300 RWD, E 300 4MATIC, E 450 4MATIC, AMG E 53 and AMG E 63 S. Coupe, cabriolet, wagon and All-Terrain body styles make it one of the widest ranges in the class.
The E-Class was one of the two best-selling mid-size luxury sedans alongside the 5 Series. Volume was slipping as the segment lost buyers to GLC/GLE crossovers.
The E-Class is the archetypal Mercedes executive sedan with strong aspirational pull. The brand's middling reliability reputation tempers that slightly.
2019 E-Class buyers commonly got subvented lease rates and discounted loaner/demo cars, and dealers negotiated routinely. Discounts were not desperation-level.
2019 is the W213's third model year and a change year, with the 362-hp E 450 V6 replacing the E 400 and the AMG E 53 arriving. The 2021 facelift was still two years out.
Reviewers widely praised its ride comfort, refinement and safety tech, ranking it at or near the top of the class. The BMW 5 Series and Genesis G80 frequently edged it in comparisons.
