The verdict

A mixed-report mid-size luxury sedan, strong on safety and held back by efficiency.

The 2021 E-Class is the facelift year of the W213 generation. It is one of the most comfortable, quietest and best-finished mid-size luxury sedans, and it earned five NHTSA stars and an IIHS Top Safety Pick+. You pay for it every step of the way. The volume E 350 4MATIC stickered around $57,800 with its 255-hp four-cylinder, it needs premium fuel at an EPA-estimated $3,200 a year, and the driver-assistance package is optional. The 4-year/50,000-mile warranty and a heavy recall count for this launch year also add ownership risk. Buy it for the cabin and the ride, and compare pricing and service history carefully.

32/100
#7 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The volume E 350 4MATIC uses the 2.0L turbo inline-4 (no EQ Boost on this engine for 2021); the facelifted 2021 range tops out with the 603-hp AMG E 63 S.

Torque
273 lb-ft (E 350; 369 lb-ft E 450, up to 627 lb-ft AMG E 63 S)
46/100
#6 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Peak torque from the 2.0L turbo-four arrives low and holds across a broad plateau.

0–60 mph time

#6 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Manufacturer 0–60 figure for the volume E 350 4MATIC; competitive for a four-cylinder mid-size luxury sedan.

Powertrain refinement70
#5 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The 2021 E 350's turbo-four is smooth and pulls well from low rpm, but it lacks the EQ Boost mild-hybrid assist of the E 450 and sounds and feels ordinary for the price next to the silky inline-six.

Transmission behavior78
#3 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The 9G-TRONIC 9-speed automatic shifts smoothly and unobtrusively in Comfort mode; occasional hesitation on abrupt kickdowns keeps it just short of the top band.

AWD/4WD availability82
#3 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

4MATIC AWD is optional on the E 350 and standard on the E 450 sedan, AMG E 53 and AMG E 63 S, the AMG models getting fully variable 4MATIC+ (50/50 to 100% rear).

Powertrain lineup breadth70
#3 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Four distinct gas powertrains (2.0L I4, 3.0L I6 with EQ Boost, AMG 53 I6, AMG 63 V8) span mainstream to high-performance, but no plug-in hybrid, diesel or EV E-Class sedan was sold in the US for 2021.

NHTSA overall rating
5 stars (RWD and 4MATIC; 5-star frontal, side and rollover)

#1 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

NHTSA rated both the RWD and 4MATIC 2021 E-Class sedans five stars overall, with five stars in every sub-rating.

IIHS awards & crashworthiness88
#3 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The facelifted 2021 W213 sedan earned an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ with Good ratings in every crash test. The award applies only to cars built after November 2020 with the optional front crash prevention system, which keeps this item off the very top of the band.

Standard ADAS suite breadth62
#9 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Active Brake Assist (AEB), Blind Spot Assist and Attention Assist are standard on the volume E 350. DISTRONIC adaptive cruise, Active Steering Assist and active lane keeping sit in the optional Driver Assistance Package, which is thin standard content for a luxury sedan at this price.

Automatic emergency braking performance68
#10 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Vehicle-to-vehicle AEB rates Superior with both the standard and optional systems. Pedestrian day detection rates Superior only with the optional package; the standard system rates Basic, and there is no nighttime pedestrian result to credit.

Blind-spot & cross-traffic coverage72
#7 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Blind Spot Assist with exit warning is standard. Active Blind Spot Assist with braking intervention and the rear cross-traffic functions need the optional Driver Assistance and parking packages.

Lane keeping & centering78
#3 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The 2021 refresh added a capacitive steering wheel that senses hands without needing torque input, and optioned Active Steering Assist centers smoothly. It is not standard on the volume trim, which keeps it below the top band.

Adaptive cruise & highway assist78
#5 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

DISTRONIC with stop-and-go, route-based speed adaptation and Active Lane Change Assist is a refined full-speed-range highway assist. It is optional rather than standard on the E 350.

Hands-free driving availability20
#2 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

No hands-free driving mode is offered. Active Steering Assist requires hands on the wheel, and Mercedes' DRIVE PILOT was not offered in the US until later and never on the W213.

Headlight performance55
#10 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Only the LED projector lamps in the Exterior Lighting package rate Good. The standard LED reflector lamps rate Acceptable on cars built after November 2020, and Marginal or Poor on earlier 2021 builds.

Outward visibility72
#5 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Sightlines are typical of a mid-size sedan: good forward visibility, with thickish rear pillars and a high trunk deck. A surround-view camera is available in the parking packages.

Child-seat (LATCH) usability80
#1 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

IIHS rates the E-Class sedan's LATCH hardware Good for ease of use. The rear seat is roomy enough for two car seats, but fitting three across is tight.

Cargo/trunk volume
13.1 cu ft (40/20/40 split-folding rear seat)
31/100
#9 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The trunk is small for the class, though the 40/20/40 folding rear seat helps with long items.

In-cabin storage & clever solutions60
#5 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

A center-console bin, covered cupholders and door pockets make everyday storage competitive but not innovative. Wireless charging is optional.

Seat comfort84
#4 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The large, deeply supportive front seats have wide adjustment, and multicontour massage seats are optional. The rear bench is comfortable for two adults.

Ride quality84
#2 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The steel suspension is compliant and well controlled, and optional Air Body Control makes it plusher still. It firms up only in Sport Plus mode.

Cabin quietness82
#3 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The cabin is very quiet at highway speed, and an optional acoustic comfort package adds acoustic glass. The four-cylinder is audible when worked hard.

Climate & comfort features72
#5 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Heated front seats and dual-zone automatic climate control are standard. Ventilated and massage seats, the heated wheel and rear climate are extra-cost options.

0/100
#6 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Entry E 350 rear-drive sedan for the 2021 facelift year, well above the sedan band ceiling as expected for a mid-size luxury car.

Volume-Trim Price
$57,800 (E 350 4MATIC incl. destination; ~$62–64k as commonly optioned with Premium pkg)
1/100
#5 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

E 350 4MATIC is the volume US sedan configuration; its $56,750 MSRP plus $1,050 destination is used as the representative price.

5-Year Maintenance & Repair Cost
~$6,500 (≈$3,700 maintenance + ≈$2,800 repairs over 5 yrs)
38/100
#6 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

German luxury service pricing puts routine maintenance near $3,700 over five years, with repairs after the 4-yr/50k warranty lapses adding a meaningful tail.

5-Year Resale Value Retention
~48% retained after 5 yrs (sources range 43–53%)
43/100
#5 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Typical luxury-sedan depreciation: roughly half the sticker gone in five years, mid-band for sedans.

Basic warranty
4 yr / 50,000 mi
50/100
#2 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Mercedes-Benz's standard new-vehicle limited warranty, one year longer than mainstream 3/36.

Powertrain warranty
4 yr / 50,000 mi (no separate longer powertrain coverage)
0/100
#6 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Mercedes does not extend powertrain coverage beyond the basic 4/50 warranty, below the 5-yr segment floor.

Complimentary maintenance & perks42
#9 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

No complimentary scheduled maintenance in 2021 (Mercedes sells prepaid plans instead, unlike BMW's 3-yr/36k ULTIMATE CARE); perks are limited to roadside assistance for the warranty term and a Mercedes me connect trial.

Effective 5-Year Ownership Cost
$36,556 (≈$30,056 depreciation + $6,500 maintenance)
29/100
#6 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

$57,800 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (48% retained, or about $27,744) leaves about $30,056 in depreciation. Add the projected $6,500 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $36,556 in total.

6Reliability & QualityMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.48C+
Predicted reliability64
#6 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

2021 is the mid-cycle facelift year of the W213 generation (launched for 2017): new MBUX infotainment, new steering wheel with capacitive hands-off detection, and a 48V mild-hybrid system on the E 350. J.D. Power rates it Average, and Consumer Reports' reliability data for the E-Class has historically run below average, with owner complaints about electrical and infotainment faults. Launch-year changes put it below the later, more settled 2023 car.

Brand reliability track record63
#4 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

In the 2020–2022 dependability studies Mercedes-Benz sat in the lower half of the J.D. Power VDS and Consumer Reports brand rankings. That is better than the bottom-tier brands but well behind Lexus, Toyota and Genesis.

Recall & TSB history50
#5 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

MY2021 is covered by 19 NHTSA campaigns, an unusually high count typical of a facelift launch year. The ones that reach the volume E 350 include two fuel-pump shutdown campaigns (loss of drive power), passenger-seat travel-limit and seat-position-switch airbag faults, a loose side-crash-sensor connector, rear-camera/MBUX blank-screen software, and eCall location/connectivity software. None is a design flaw in the powertrain, but the volume and the safety relevance put this at the bottom of the typical band.

Powertrain durability reputation72
#3 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

For 2021 the volume E 350 moved to the M264 2.0L turbo I4 with a 48V EQ Boost integrated starter-generator, paired with the long-running 9G-Tronic 9-speed. The engine and transmission family is mature with no systemic failure pattern. The fuel-pump campaigns are a supplier component issue, and the new 48V hardware adds some long-term complexity in its first year.

Interior material quality87
#3 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The facelifted cabin gets MBUX on standard twin 12.3-inch screens, open-pore wood, quality leather and 64-color ambient lighting. Reviewers rank it among the richest cabins in the mid-size luxury segment.

Fit & finish80
#2 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Assembly is solid, with tight panel gaps and a quiet cabin on a mature platform. First-year facelift glitches (seat-limiter and seat-switch assembly faults, infotainment reboots) and scattered owner reports of rattles hold it below the later W213 years.

Dealer & service network80
#2 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

About 380 Mercedes-Benz dealers across the US, a denser network than BMW's or Audi's, covering all major metros and most secondary markets. Service satisfaction is mid-pack among luxury brands.

Parts availability & repair cost52
#6 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Mercedes parts and labor are among the most expensive in the industry. The W213 is a high-volume, seven-year generation with a strong aftermarket and independent-shop familiarity, although 2021-only MBUX and 48V components are more dealer-dependent.

7Technology & InfotainmentMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.60C+
Touchscreen size
12.3 in MBUX widescreen touchscreen
62/100
#3 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The 2021 facelift brought MBUX, with a 12.3-inch touchscreen beside a 12.3-inch digital cluster in one widescreen pod. One review lists twin 10.25-inch screens on its test car.

Infotainment UX & responsiveness70
#4 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

MBUX, new for 2021, is quick and good-looking, but the touchpad and the fiddly capacitive steering-wheel controls drew criticism.

Wireless CarPlay / Android Auto60
#3 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, but US-market W213 cars connect by wire only. Wireless projection arrived with the W214.

Voice control & native navigation82
#1 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The Hey Mercedes natural-language assistant is among the best in the segment, and native navigation is standard, with augmented-reality guidance available.

Audio system quality80
#7 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The base system is solid, and an excellent Burmester surround system (13 speakers, 590 W) is optional.

Digital instrument cluster86
#2 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

A configurable 12.3-inch digital cluster with several display styles is standard.

OTA update capability55
#3 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

MBUX can take over-the-air map and infotainment updates, but not the feature-adding whole-vehicle updates of MB.OS cars.

Companion app & remote functions70
#3 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The Mercedes me app offers remote lock, vehicle locate and remote start on equipped cars. Services need a subscription after the trial period.

Charging ports & device power64
#4 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

USB-C ports are standard, but wireless charging is an option and there is no AC outlet.

Keyless & remote access72
#5 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Push-button start is standard. Full KEYLESS-GO proximity entry and the hands-free trunk are packaged options, and remote start works through the app.

Camera & parking aids70
#4 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

A rear camera is standard. Parking sensors, the 360-degree camera and Active Parking Assist come in the optional Parking Assistance Package.

Head-up display availability62
#4 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

A color head-up display is an extra-cost option on the E 350, not standard.

8Use-Case FitOne of the E-Class's weakest categories.1.70C-
Kid & car-seat practicality58
#5 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The rear doors open wide and there is good rear headroom, but 36.2 in of rear legroom and the 13.1 cu ft trunk make rear-facing seats and strollers a squeeze.

Family safety package74
#8 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Crash-test results are strong and automatic emergency braking is standard. Adaptive cruise, lane-keeping and blind-spot assist come in the extra-cost Driver Assistance Package.

Family road-trip comfort72
#3 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The ride, seats and quiet cabin suit four adults well. Rear climate and heated rear seats cost extra, and the trunk limits a family's luggage.

Daily driving ease80
#4 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

A supple ride, smooth 9-speed and quiet cabin make it a relaxing commuter. Active Stop-and-Go Assist requires the optional Driver Assistance Package.

Commuting cost efficiency50
#4 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

About 25 MPG combined on required premium fuel is average for a luxury four-cylinder, and consumables are luxury-priced.

Parking & maneuverability70
#2 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The roughly 38 ft turning circle is reasonable for the class, and a surround camera and Active Parking Assist are optional. The sedan's length still needs care.

Work capability20
#4 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Mercedes-Benz USA publishes no US tow rating for the E-Class sedan, and the trunk is modest, so this is not a work vehicle.

Durability for work duty40
#2 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The luxury-trimmed cabin and complex electronics suit it poorly to hard use, despite a solid chassis. Its only fleet role is livery service.

Jobsite & upfit practicality15
#4 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

It has no onboard AC power, no factory hitch and few work provisions.

Long-distance comfort & range82
#3 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Superb highway comfort and quiet, 30 MPG on the highway from a roughly 17-gallon tank, and an available DISTRONIC suite make it an excellent mile-eater.

Outdoor & adventure capability40
#4 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

4MATIC all-wheel drive handles snow and gravel roads, but low ground clearance and no tow rating keep it on pavement.

Gear & luggage flexibility50
#4 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The 40/20/40 split-folding rear seat allows pass-through loads, but the trunk is small and there are no roof rails or hitch.

9Driving ExperienceOne of the E-Class's strongest categories.2.63C+
Handling & agility74
#4 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Handling is secure and well controlled but leans toward comfort; the BMW 5 Series is more agile.

Steering feel66
#3 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The steering is accurate and well weighted but offers only modest feedback.

Braking confidence78
#2 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The brakes are strong and progressive, with a firm, natural pedal and competitive stopping distances.

Powertrain smoothness & response72
#6 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The turbo-four pulls smoothly from low rpm and the 9G-TRONIC shifts smoothly. Without the E 450's EQ Boost assist, stop-start restarts are less seamless, and kickdowns can hesitate.

Drivetrain noise & vibration66
#7 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The engine is well isolated at cruise, but the 2.0L four sounds ordinary under load next to the E 450's inline-six.

Turning circle
~38.2 ft curb-to-curb (E 350 4MATIC; ~38 ft RWD)
30/100
#5 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

A reasonable turning circle for a mid-size sedan. The W213 chassis is unchanged through the facelift.

Driving position & ergonomics80
#2 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Seat and wheel adjust widely and forward sightlines are good. The new capacitive wheel controls and the touchpad are ergonomic missteps.

Fun-to-drive factor62
#3 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

It is pleasant and polished but built for comfort; the E 350 lacks the character of the E 450 or AMG E 53.

10Value & Market PositionOne of the E-Class's strongest categories.2.68C+
Standard equipment generosity62
#7 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The 2021 refresh made dual 12.3-in MBUX screens, LED headlights and a new capacitive steering wheel standard, but key desirables (Driver Assistance pkg, heated seats on some builds, Burmester, 360 camera) remain costly options.

Feature value per dollar60
#10 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Priced in line with the BMW 5 Series and Audi A6, but the 255-hp four-cylinder E 350 at $55k+ and steep option pricing make it fair rather than strong value; Genesis G80 undercuts it substantially.

Trim & configuration breadth84
#2 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Sedan offered as E 350 RWD, E 350 4MATIC, E 450 4MATIC, AMG E 53 and AMG E 63 S, plus coupe, cabriolet, wagon and All-Terrain body styles — one of the widest ranges in the class.

Sales popularity & market acceptance70
#3 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

A perennial top seller among mid-size luxury sedans alongside the 5 Series, though the segment and E-Class volume were shrinking as buyers moved to the GLE/GLC crossovers.

Brand desirability & image86
#2 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The E-Class is the archetypal Mercedes executive sedan with strong aspirational brand pull, tempered slightly by the brand's middling reliability reputation.

Deals & incentive availability52
#8 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Mercedes typically offered lease support and modest dealer discounts on the E-Class, but the 2021 chip shortage tightened inventory and pushed transactions close to MSRP.

Model freshness72
#3 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

2021 is the W213's mid-cycle facelift year (new styling, MBUX, capacitive wheel, E 450 mild-hybrid I6) on a generation launched for 2017; replacement W214 did not arrive until the 2024 model year.

Critical reception & awards76
#3 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Widely praised for ride comfort, refinement and tech; reviewers rank it at or near the top of the class, though the BMW 5 Series and Genesis G80 frequently edge it in comparisons.
