The verdict

A mixed-report mid-size luxury sedan, strong on safety and held back by efficiency.

The 2020 E-Class is a hushed, comfortable and very safe executive sedan with a five-star NHTSA rating, an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ and one of the richest cabins in its class. It is expensive to own, though. The volume E 350 4MATIC stickers at about $57,500, burns premium fuel at roughly $3,200 a year, and puts many of its best features in extra-cost packages. It is also the last year before the 2021 facelift, so it misses the MBUX touchscreen, wireless CarPlay and over-the-air updates. Buy it for refinement and prestige, not for value or the latest tech.

32/100
#5 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

For 2020 the E 300 was renamed E 350 after its 2.0L turbo four rose from 241 to 255 hp; the pre-facelift range tops out with the 603-hp AMG E 63 S.

Torque
273 lb-ft (E 350; 369 lb-ft E 450, up to 627 lb-ft AMG E 63 S)
46/100
#5 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The turbo-four's peak torque arrives at 1,800 rpm and holds to 4,000 rpm, giving a broad, usable plateau.

0–60 mph time
6.3 s (E 350 4MATIC, manufacturer; 6.1 s RWD, 4.9 s E 450 4MATIC, 3.3 s AMG E 63 S)
49/100
#6 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Manufacturer-quoted 0–60 time for the volume E 350 4MATIC; mid-pack for a four-cylinder mid-size luxury sedan.

Powertrain refinement70
#5 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The uprated 2.0L turbo-four is smooth and pulls strongly from low rpm, but it sounds and feels ordinary for the price next to the E 450's twin-turbo V6.

Transmission behavior78
#3 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The 9G-TRONIC 9-speed automatic shifts smoothly and unobtrusively in Comfort mode; occasional hesitation on abrupt kickdowns keeps it just short of the top band.

AWD/4WD availability82
#3 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

4MATIC AWD is optional on the E 350 and standard on the E 450 sedan, AMG E 53 and AMG E 63 S, the AMG models getting fully variable 4MATIC+.

Powertrain lineup breadth68
#2 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Four distinct gas powertrains (2.0L I4, 3.0L biturbo V6, AMG 53 I6 with EQ Boost, AMG 63 V8) span mainstream to high performance, but no plug-in hybrid, diesel or EV E-Class sedan was sold in the US for 2020.

NHTSA overall rating
5 stars (RWD and 4MATIC; 5-star frontal, side and rollover)
100/100
#1 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

NHTSA rated both the RWD and 4MATIC 2020 E-Class sedans five stars overall, with five stars in every sub-rating.

IIHS awards & crashworthiness85
#6 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The 2020 W213 sedan earned an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ with Good ratings in every crash test. The award applies only to cars with the optional LED projector headlights, which keeps this item off the top of the band.

Standard ADAS suite breadth60
#8 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Active Brake Assist (AEB), Blind Spot Assist and Attention Assist are standard on the volume E 350. DISTRONIC adaptive cruise, Active Steering Assist, active lane keeping and rear cross-traffic braking sit in the optional Driver Assistance Package, which is thin standard content for a luxury sedan at this price.

Automatic emergency braking performance65
#10 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The standard system rates Superior for vehicle-to-vehicle crash prevention. IIHS lists no pedestrian AEB result for the 2020 sedan, day or night, so there is nothing further to credit.

Blind-spot & cross-traffic coverage70
#8 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Blind Spot Assist with exit warning is standard. Active Blind Spot Assist with braking intervention and the rear cross-traffic functions need the optional Driver Assistance and parking packages.

Lane keeping & centering74
#3 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The optional Active Steering Assist centers smoothly and reviewers rated it among the better systems of its time. It still detects hands by steering torque, which the 2021 facelift's capacitive wheel replaced, and it is not standard on the volume trim.

Adaptive cruise & highway assist76
#4 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

DISTRONIC with stop-and-go, route-based speed adaptation and Active Lane Change Assist is a refined full-speed-range highway assist. It is optional rather than standard on the E 350.

Hands-free driving availability20
#1 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

No hands-free driving mode is offered. Active Steering Assist requires hands on the wheel, and Mercedes' DRIVE PILOT was never offered on the W213.

Headlight performance60
#6 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The LED projector lamps with curve-adaptive beams and high-beam assist rate Good, but they are optional. The standard LED reflector lamps without high-beam assist rate Acceptable.

Outward visibility72
#3 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Sightlines are typical of a mid-size sedan: good forward visibility, with thickish rear pillars and a high trunk deck. A surround-view camera is available in the parking packages.

Child-seat (LATCH) usability80
#2 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

IIHS rates the E-Class sedan's LATCH hardware Good for ease of use. The rear seat is roomy enough for two car seats, but fitting three across is tight.

4Space & ComfortMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.40C+

Every 2020 E-Class sedan seats five.

Front headroom
37.3 in (with standard sunroof)
32/100
#9 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The published figure includes the standard sunroof, which costs some headroom. It is average for a mid-size luxury sedan.

Front legroom
41.7 in (41.3 in per some third-party listings)
43/100
#8 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Adequate front legroom for the class, but not generous.

Rear headroom
38.2 in
80/100
#1 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Rear headroom is generous for a mid-size sedan.

Rear legroom
36.2 in (35.8 in per some third-party listings)
42/100
#5 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Rear legroom in the W213 sedan is only adequate and trails the Genesis G80 and BMW 5 Series.

Cargo/trunk volume
13.1 cu ft (40/20/40 split-folding rear seat)
31/100
#10 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The trunk is small for the class, although the 40/20/40 folding rear seat helps with long items.

In-cabin storage & clever solutions58
#4 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

A center-console bin, a covered cupholder bin and door pockets give competitive everyday storage, but nothing inventive. The wireless-charging tray is locked into the Premium Package.

Seat comfort83
#5 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The large, supportive front seats offer wide power adjustment with memory, and multicontour massage seats are optional. The rear bench is comfortable for two adults.

Ride quality83
#3 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The steel-spring suspension is compliant and well controlled, and the optional Air Body Control air suspension makes it plusher still. It is tuned for comfort rather than sportiness.

Cabin quietness81
#3 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The cabin is hushed at highway speed, with the nine-speed keeping revs low. The four-cylinder is audible when worked hard.

Climate & comfort features68
#6 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Dual-zone automatic climate control is standard. On the E 350, heated front seats come in the Premium Package, while ventilated and massage seats, a heated wheel and rear climate are further extra-cost options.

5Cost of OwnershipOne of the E-Class's weakest categories.0.00F
Base MSRP
$55,045 (2020 E 350 RWD sedan: $54,050 + $995 destination)
0/100
#6 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The entry E 350 rear-drive sedan, renamed from E 300 for 2020, starts well above the sedan band ceiling, as expected for a mid-size luxury car.

Volume-Trim Price
$57,545 (E 350 4MATIC: $56,550 + $995 destination; ~$62–64k as commonly optioned)
1/100
#6 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The E 350 4MATIC is the volume US sedan configuration, so its MSRP plus destination is the representative price.

5-Year Maintenance & Repair Cost
~$6,500 (≈$3,700 maintenance + ≈$2,800 repairs over 5 yrs)
38/100
#7 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

German luxury service pricing puts routine maintenance near $3,700 over five years. Repairs after the 4-yr/50k warranty lapses add a meaningful tail.

5-Year Resale Value Retention
~48% retained after 5 yrs (sources range 43–58%)
43/100
#4 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Typical luxury-sedan depreciation for the W213: roughly half the sticker gone in five years, which lands mid-band for sedans.

Basic warranty
4 yr / 50,000 mi
50/100
#2 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Mercedes-Benz's standard new-vehicle limited warranty runs one year longer than the mainstream 3/36.

Powertrain warranty
4 yr / 50,000 mi (no separate longer powertrain coverage)
0/100
#6 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Mercedes gives the powertrain no coverage beyond the basic 4/50 warranty, which is below the 5-yr segment floor.

Complimentary maintenance & perks42
#8 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

There was no complimentary scheduled maintenance in 2020: Mercedes sold prepaid plans, while BMW's 3-yr/36k ULTIMATE CARE came included. The perks are 24/7 roadside assistance for the warranty term and a Mercedes me connect trial.

Effective 5-Year Ownership Cost
$36,423 (≈$29,923 depreciation + $6,500 maintenance)
29/100
#6 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

$57,545 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (48% retained, or about $27,622) leaves about $29,923 in depreciation. Add the projected $6,500 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $36,423 in total.

6Reliability & QualityOne of the E-Class's strongest categories.2.57C+
Predicted reliability63
#4 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

2020 is a late pre-facelift year of the W213 generation (launched for 2017). The only change was the base E 300 becoming the E 350 with the M264 2.0L turbo. J.D. Power rates it Average. Consumer Reports' E-Class reliability data has historically run below average, with owners reporting electrical and infotainment faults, so the mixed signals put it in the lower part of the average band.

Brand reliability track record63
#4 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

In the 2019–2021 dependability studies Mercedes-Benz sat in the lower half of the J.D. Power VDS and Consumer Reports brand rankings. That is better than the bottom-tier brands but well behind Lexus, Toyota and Genesis.

Recall & TSB history60
#4 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

MY2020 avoided the large fuel-pump campaigns (23V445/23V880) and the facelift-year seat and crash-sensor recalls that hit 2021. The campaigns that reach the volume E 350 are small assembly batches (turbo oil-line screws, fuel injectors) plus the fleet-wide rear-camera and eCall software recalls. Most other MY2020 campaigns affect only the E 450, AMG or coupe/cabriolet models. That is typical activity, with nothing systemic in the powertrain.

Powertrain durability reputation72
#5 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

For 2020 the volume E 350 moved to the M264 2.0L turbo I4 (255 hp), without the 48V EQ Boost that arrived in 2021, paired with the long-running 9G-Tronic 9-speed. The engine and transmission family is mature with no systemic failure pattern. The one engine recall (20V364) covered improperly torqued turbo oil-line screws on 90 units, an assembly slip rather than a design flaw.

Interior material quality85
#4 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The W213 cabin has open-pore wood, quality leather, 64-color ambient lighting and the 12.3-inch COMAND display. Reviewers rank it among the richest cabins in the mid-size luxury segment. The pre-facelift COMAND system and the optional (not standard) widescreen cockpit leave it slightly behind the 2021 refresh.

Fit & finish81
#2 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Assembly is solid, with tight panel gaps and a quiet cabin on a platform in its fourth US year. Scattered owner reports of rattles and electrical glitches, plus a few small assembly-related recalls (turbo line screws, seatback latch), keep it short of the top band.

Dealer & service network80
#2 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

About 380 Mercedes-Benz dealers across the US, a denser network than BMW's or Audi's, covering all major metros and most secondary markets. Service satisfaction is mid-pack among luxury brands.

Parts availability & repair cost53
#5 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Mercedes parts and labor are among the most expensive in the industry. The W213 is a high-volume, seven-year generation with a strong aftermarket and wide independent-shop familiarity, and the 2020 car has no 48V mild-hybrid hardware to add dealer dependence.

7Technology & InfotainmentMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.94C-
Touchscreen size
12.3 in COMAND widescreen display (standard; not touch-enabled; controlled by touchpad/rotary)
62/100
#2 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The 2020 pre-facelift E-Class has a large standard 12.3-inch center display, but it lacks touch capability. Touch arrived with MBUX on the 2021 facelift, and that limitation is scored under 7.1.2.

Infotainment UX & responsiveness55
#6 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The older COMAND system has deep menus and relies on a touchpad and rotary controller with no touchscreen. Reviewers called it complicated next to the MBUX system that replaced it for 2021.

Wireless CarPlay / Android Auto58
#3 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard but wired only on the 2020 car. There is no wireless projection.

Voice control & native navigation60
#4 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Standard COMAND navigation is capable, but LINGUATRONIC voice control is command-based rather than the natural-language "Hey Mercedes" assistant that arrived with MBUX.

Audio system quality80
#6 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The base system is decent, the 13-speaker Burmester surround system comes in the Premium Package, and a Burmester High-End 3D system is a further option.

Digital instrument cluster70
#6 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The crisp, configurable 12.3-inch digital cluster that forms the widescreen cockpit is excellent, but on the E 350 it is part of the Premium Package rather than standard.

OTA update capability25
#8 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The pre-MBUX COMAND system has no meaningful over-the-air vehicle updates. Map updates are available through the Mercedes me service, and software changes need a dealer visit.

Companion app & remote functions65
#5 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The Mercedes me connect app provides remote lock and unlock, vehicle locate, status and remote start, with some functions subscription-based after the trial. No digital phone key is offered.

Charging ports & device power52
#6 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

USB-A ports are in the center console, and wireless charging with NFC pairing is tied to the Premium Package. USB-C came only with the 2021 facelift, and rear-seat charging is limited.

Keyless & remote access78
#2 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

For 2020 the KEYLESS-GO Comfort Package, with hands-free trunk access and an electronic trunk closer, became standard on the E 350. Remote start is available through the app, but there is no phone-as-key.

Camera & parking aids72
#3 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

A rear camera is standard. A surround-view camera, PARKTRONIC sensors and Active Parking Assist come in the optional Parking Assistance Package.

Head-up display availability62
#3 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

A color head-up display is an extra-cost option on the E-Class sedan, typically bundled with upper packages rather than on the volume build.

8Use-Case FitOne of the E-Class's weakest categories.1.62D
Kid & car-seat practicality62
#5 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The rear doors are wide and IIHS rates the LATCH hardware Good, but only 36.2 in of rear legroom and a 13.1 cu ft trunk limit rear-facing seats and stroller-plus-gear loads.

Family safety package72
#8 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

It carries a five-star NHTSA rating and an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ with automatic emergency braking and blind-spot monitoring standard. Adaptive cruise and active lane keeping cost extra in the Driver Assistance Package.

Family road-trip comfort62
#8 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

It is comfortable and quiet for four on a long trip, but rear climate and rear charging are thin, and the 13.1 cu ft trunk fills quickly with family luggage.

Daily driving ease78
#3 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

A supple ride, minimal turbo lag and a smooth nine-speed make it relaxing in traffic. Keyless-Go is standard, while stop-and-go adaptive cruise is optional.

Commuting cost efficiency52
#5 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

About 25–26 mpg combined is reasonable for a luxury sedan, but it needs premium fuel and has luxury-brand consumables, so per-mile costs are average for the class at best.

Parking & maneuverability64
#3 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

At 193.8 in long it is a mid-size footprint with a roughly 38-ft turning circle. The rear view is somewhat restricted, and surround-view cameras and park assist are optional.

Work capability20
#3 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

It is a luxury sedan with no US tow rating and a small trunk, so it is not meaningfully work-capable.

Durability for work duty40
#2 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The E-Class has a long taxi and livery history in Europe, but the US-market car's luxury interior and costly repairs make it a poor fit for hard work use.

Jobsite & upfit practicality15
#3 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

There is no onboard AC power, no bed or cargo tie-down system and no factory hitch for the US sedan, so work provisions are essentially absent.

Long-distance comfort & range80
#3 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

It is an excellent highway cruiser, with supportive seats, a quiet cabin, a compliant ride and a range of well over 400 miles. The DISTRONIC and Active Steering Assist driver aids are optional.

Outdoor & adventure capability40
#3 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

4MATIC AWD handles snowy and gravel roads, but low ground clearance, no tow rating and no roof rails make it a pavement-focused car.

Gear & luggage flexibility50
#5 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The 40/20/40 split-folding rear seat adds flexibility for skis and long items, but the 13.1 cu ft trunk is small and there is no hitch or roof rails.

9Driving ExperienceMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.54C+
Handling & agility72
#4 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Body control is predictable and grip is secure, and it handles remarkably well for a comfort-tuned car, but the BMW 5 Series and Genesis G70-type rivals are more agile.

Steering feel66
#3 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The steering is relatively quick and accurate but light and filtered, typical of Mercedes' comfort focus.

Braking confidence74
#2 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The brakes are strong and progressive with a firm, well-modulated pedal, and W213 test cars stopped competitively for the class.

Powertrain smoothness & response76
#4 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The uprated 255-hp turbo-four responds with almost no lag, and the nine-speed shifts smoothly. Engine stop/start is noticeable but well managed.

Drivetrain noise & vibration66
#7 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The engine is quiet at a cruise, but the four-cylinder sounds ordinary and a little gruff when worked hard, below the class's six-cylinder benchmark.

Turning circle
~38.2 ft curb-to-curb (E 350; up to ~39 ft 4MATIC per third-party data)
30/100
#5 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

A reasonably tight turning circle for a mid-size sedan, with 4MATIC slightly wider than RWD.

Driving position & ergonomics70
#5 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The memory power seat and wide wheel adjustment suit most drivers, but reviewers criticized the column shifter as vague and the touchpad and rotary infotainment controls as fiddly.

Fun-to-drive factor62
#4 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

It is pleasant and composed rather than exciting. The E 350 is a relaxed luxury cruiser, while the E 450 and AMG E 53/E 63 carry the enthusiast appeal.

10Value & Market PositionOne of the E-Class's strongest categories.2.60C+
Standard equipment generosity60
#10 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The base E 350 has LED lighting, a sunroof, dual-zone climate and a 12.3-in display. The second 12.3-in cluster screen, the Driver Assistance pkg, Burmester audio and the 360 camera all cost extra in the pre-facelift 2020 car.

Feature value per dollar60
#10 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The 2020 E 350's four-cylinder rose to 255 hp, and the car is priced in line with the BMW 530i and Audi A6. Steep option pricing makes it fair rather than strong value.

Trim & configuration breadth84
#2 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The sedan came as the E 350 RWD, E 350 4MATIC, E 450 4MATIC, AMG E 53 and AMG E 63 S. Coupe, cabriolet, wagon and All-Terrain body styles make it one of the widest ranges in the class.

Sales popularity & market acceptance68
#3 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The E-Class remained a top seller among mid-size luxury sedans alongside the 5 Series. Its volume fell in 2020, though, with the pandemic and buyers moving to GLE/GLC crossovers.

Brand desirability & image86
#2 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The E-Class is the archetypal Mercedes executive sedan with strong aspirational pull. The brand's middling reliability reputation tempers that slightly.

Deals & incentive availability64
#7 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

2020 E-Class buyers saw subvented lease money factors, ~$1,000 incentives and pandemic-era financing support. That predates the 2021 chip-shortage squeeze that pushed prices to MSRP.

Model freshness56
#5 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

2020 is the W213's fourth model year and the last before the 2021 mid-cycle facelift, which added new styling, MBUX, a capacitive wheel and a mild-hybrid E 450. Buyers faced an imminent refresh.

Critical reception & awards75
#3 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Reviewers widely praised its ride comfort, refinement and safety tech, ranking it at or near the top of the class. The BMW 5 Series and Genesis G80 frequently edged it in comparisons.
