The verdict
A capable mid-size luxury sedan, strong on technology and held back by ownership.
The 2024 E-Class, the first year of the all-new W214 generation, is one of the most comfortable and best-finished mid-size luxury sedans you can buy. Its cabin is a benchmark, the ride is quiet and supple, and every US car comes with 4MATIC all-wheel drive and a 360° camera. The catch is cost: it starts at $63,350, takes premium fuel (about $2,950 a year), includes no free maintenance and has only a 4-year/50,000-mile warranty. As a launch-year model it also collected five recalls. Buy it for refinement and prestige, not for value.

Detailed scoring by subject
1Performance & PowertrainMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.96C-
The 2024 E 350 4MATIC — the launch year of the W214 generation — uses a 2.0L turbo I4 with 48V mild-hybrid ISG rated at 255 hp; the E 450 4MATIC's 3.0L turbo I6 makes 375 hp. No AMG model was offered for 2024.
The E 350's turbo 2.0L I4 makes 295 lb-ft of peak torque; the E 450's I6 makes 369 lb-ft.
Mercedes quotes 6.1 s to 60 mph for the 2024 E 350 4MATIC and 4.4 s for the E 450 4MATIC.
The 48V ISG smooths start-stop and low-speed pull-away on the E 350's 2.0L turbo, which is quiet and responsive if a little less characterful than the E 450's silky inline-six. Minor low-rpm softness before boost builds is the only criticism.
The 9G-TRONIC 9-speed automatic shifts smoothly and imperceptibly at cruise, with prompt kickdowns; the integrated ISG sits within the gearbox and fills torque gaps during shifts.
For 2024, every US E-Class sedan came with 4MATIC all-wheel drive as standard — the E 350 4MATIC and E 450 4MATIC were the only sedans offered, and there was no rear-drive version.
The 2024 US sedan lineup had two powertrains, both 48V mild hybrids: a 2.0L turbo I4 (E 350) and a 3.0L turbo I6 (E 450). The AMG E 53 plug-in hybrid did not arrive until the 2025 model year, and there was no full-electric E-Class (the EQE is a separate model).
2Efficiency & RangeOne of the E-Class's weakest categories.0.34F
EPA combined figure for the 2024 E 350 4MATIC, a 2.0L turbo I4 mild hybrid with a 9-speed automatic.
EPA city figure for the volume E 350 4MATIC.
EPA highway figure for the volume E 350 4MATIC.
Range worked out from the EPA combined MPG and the W214's 17.4-gallon (66 L) fuel tank.
EPA estimated annual fuel cost for the E 350 4MATIC at 15,000 miles a year, priced on premium gasoline at EPA's current assumptions.
Premium unleaded is required on both 2024 E-Class engines, a lasting running-cost penalty against regular-fuel rivals. No plug-in or alternative-fuel option was offered that year.
3SafetyGrades above the middle of the scale.2.89B-
NHTSA has not published an overall crash-test rating for the all-new 2024 (W214) E-Class. Inferred at 4.5 stars: Good IIHS small-overlap and updated-side results and a Euro NCAP 5-star / 2024 Best Performer result support a high rating, tempered by the rear-passenger weakness IIHS found in the updated moderate overlap test.
The 2024 E-Class earned an IIHS Top Safety Pick (not TSP+) with Good small overlap, Good original moderate overlap and Good updated side results. The updated moderate overlap test rated Marginal overall — driver Good, but the rear passenger's restraints scored poorly — which kept it off the TSP+ list.
Standard on the volume 2024 E 350 4MATIC: Active Brake Assist (AEB with pedestrian detection), Blind Spot Assist with Exit Warning, Attention Assist, PRE-SAFE, parking sensors and a Surround View camera. Adaptive cruise (DISTRONIC), Active Steering Assist lane centering, active blind-spot braking and cross-traffic functions require the $1,950 Driver Assistance Package.
IIHS rates the standard Active Brake Assist only Acceptable in both the updated vehicle-to-vehicle and pedestrian front crash prevention tests; the optional system bundled with the Driver Assistance Package earns Good in both. Strong when optioned, merely adequate as delivered on the volume trim.
Blind Spot Assist with Exit Warning (safe-exit alert) is standard on every 2024 E-Class. The Driver Assistance Package adds Active Blind Spot Assist with braking intervention and cross-traffic functions; base cars are alert-only.
Optional Active Steering Assist centers smoothly and confidently, with reviewers ranking it among the more refined systems in the class; without the package the car gets lane-keeping assistance but no centering.
Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC offers full-speed-range stop-and-go with route-based speed adaptation for curves, junctions and speed limits, and is well reviewed for smoothness. It is optional (Driver Assistance Package) rather than standard on the volume trim.
No hands-free highway system is offered on the 2024 E-Class in the US; Mercedes' Drive Pilot (Level 3) is limited to the S-Class and EQS in California and Nevada. The E-Class's assistance is hands-on with steering-wheel touch detection.
The standard LED reflector headlights with high-beam assist rate only Acceptable at IIHS; the optional Digital Light projector headlights with curve adaptation rate Good. Good lighting therefore costs extra on the volume trim.
A conventional three-box sedan with reasonable glass area; the high beltline and thick C-pillars create rear-quarter blind zones, but the standard Surround View camera and Blind Spot Assist compensate well in parking and lane changes.
IIHS rates the 2024 E-Class LATCH hardware Good for ease of use, and the mid-size rear bench with wide rear door openings makes installing child seats easier than in compact luxury sedans.
4Space & ComfortOne of the E-Class's strongest categories.3.03B
The 2024 W214 E-Class sedan seats five (two front, three rear) on both the E 350 4MATIC and E 450 4MATIC.
Launch-year W214 front headroom is mid-pack for a mid-size luxury sedan; the standard panoramic sunroof is included in the published figure.
Front legroom is adequate but below the most generous rivals; identical across E 350 and E 450.
Rear headroom is strong for the class thanks to the W214's taller roofline.
The published rear legroom trails the Genesis G80 and Audi A6 on paper, though The Drive called rear legroom 'generous' in practice on the longer 116.6 in wheelbase.
Mercedes quotes 19.1 cu ft for the gas sedan, a large jump over the prior generation's 13.1 cu ft. Reviewers suspect the figure counts the underfloor well and is not SAE J1100, so the usable main compartment is smaller, though still roomy — confidence held to MEDIUM.
Conventional but competitive storage: a covered console bin, a wireless-charging tray, reasonable door pockets and an underfloor trunk well, with fully enclosed trunk hinges that keep luggage from being crushed. Nothing class-defining.
E-Class front seats are a long-distance benchmark, with multicontour and massage available through packages; the rear bench is well shaped though a touch firm. Reviewers describe the car as a 'cozy, long-distance cruiser.'
The standard AGILITY CONTROL suspension with selective damping is supple and well controlled. The optional AIRMATIC package with adaptive dampers is exceptional — The Drive said it 'completely neutralized the threat of motion sickness.'
A very quiet cabin at highway speeds and a near-imperceptible 48V start-stop. Pinnacle adds heat- and noise-insulating glass, so the volume Premium trim gives up a little isolation compared with the top trim.
Heated front seats, dual-zone climate and a panoramic roof are standard, and the mercedes me app provides remote start and preconditioning. The heated steering wheel costs extra (the $450 Winter Package), and ventilated seats and heated rear seats need packages or higher trims.
5Cost of OwnershipThe E-Class's lowest-graded category.0.00F
The all-new W214 E-Class launched in the US for MY2024 only as the E 350 4MATIC and E 450 4MATIC sedans; the E 350 4MATIC Premium opens the range at $62,200 + $1,150 destination. That is well above the sedan band's $55K ceiling, so it lands at the floor.
The volume seller is the E 350 4MATIC, typically delivered in Exclusive trim or with the Driver Assistance/Technology packages, landing in the high-$60Ks to low-$70Ks; the E 450 4MATIC starts at $69,150 before options.
Mercedes offers no complimentary scheduled maintenance, and alternating Service A/B visits run several hundred dollars each at the dealer, with repair spend rising in years 4–5 after the 4-yr/50k warranty lapses. Projections put the E-Class near the top of the sedan band.
KBB records the 2024 E-Class having lost 24% in its first two years, a better-than-typical early curve for a German luxury sedan, but the class's steep years 3–5 depreciation projects roughly half the MSRP gone by year five.
Mercedes-Benz New Vehicle Limited Warranty is 4 years / 50,000 miles — matching BMW and Audi, trailing Genesis's 5-yr/60k.
Mercedes does not offer a longer powertrain term — powertrain coverage ends with the basic warranty at 4 years / 50,000 miles, below the 5-year band floor.
No included scheduled maintenance; owners get unlimited-mileage roadside assistance for the warranty period and a Mercedes me connect trial. That is basic roadside only, behind BMW's historical plan and well behind Genesis/Volvo included service.
$69,500 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (47% retained, or about $32,665) leaves about $36,835 in depreciation. Add the projected $8,500 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $45,335 in total.
6Reliability & QualityMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.58C+
2024 is the launch year of the all-new W214 generation (debuted April 2023), so predictions rest on brand history and first-year data rather than a proven model record. Consumer Reports tracks the 2024 E-Class at around average-or-below, with complaints concentrated in MBUX/electronics and 48V integration; first-model-year risk puts it a notch below later W214 years.
Mercedes-Benz sits in the lower half of J.D. Power VDS and Consumer Reports brand rankings — not bottom-tier like Alfa Romeo or Land Rover, but well behind Lexus, Toyota and Genesis, and marginally behind BMW.
The launch-year 2024 E-Class drew five NHTSA campaigns, two carrying fire risk and two loss-of-drive-power risk — heavier than the later W214 years. Most are small-population build defects or software fixes, but the 80-amp main fuse and infotainment-reset campaigns are large, multi-model and safety-relevant.
The volume E 350 uses the M254 2.0L turbo I4 with 48V integrated starter-generator and the mature 9G-Tronic 9-speed; the M254 had several years of C-/GLC-Class service by 2024 with no systemic failures, though the 48V hardware adds complexity. The E 450's M256 inline-six is well regarded. The 2024 harness-routing and fuse recalls are integration defects rather than engine/transmission design flaws.
The W214 cabin is the segment benchmark: optional MBUX Superscreen, ambient-lit trim, open-pore wood, quality leather and switchgear borrowed from the S-Class. Reviewers rate it at or above the BMW 5 Series and Audi A6 for tactile richness.
Sindelfingen assembly delivers tight panel gaps and a quiet, rattle-free cabin in reviewer testing, but the launch year carried build-quality slips — a misrouted transmission harness and improperly secured 12V/48V ground connections — and MBUX freeze/reboot complaints.
Roughly 380 Mercedes-Benz dealers across the US — denser than BMW or Audi, covering all major metros and most secondary markets. Service satisfaction is mid-pack among luxury brands.
Mercedes parts are among the most expensive in the industry and largely dealer-sourced; the new-generation W214 has little aftermarket support yet, and its 48V system, optional air suspension and Superscreen electronics push out-of-warranty repair costs up.
7Technology & InfotainmentThe E-Class's best-graded category.3.67A-
A 14.4-inch central touchscreen is standard on the 2024 E-Class. The optional MBUX Superscreen package adds a 12.3-inch passenger display with a privacy function.
Third-generation MBUX is quick and looks great, and adds in-car apps (Zoom, TikTok, Angry Birds). But climate controls are buried in the touchscreen and the haptic steering-wheel controls are imprecise — the most common complaints in 2024 reviews.
Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard across the 2024 E-Class lineup.
Standard native navigation includes MBUX Augmented Reality, and 'Hey Mercedes' gained a ChatGPT beta by OTA in 2024. Still, The Drive found the assistant dated, with 'random interjections.'
Burmester 4D surround with Dolby Atmos and Apple Spatial Audio is part of the Pinnacle trim and is highly regarded. The volume Premium trim's base system is competent, so premium sound means a costly trim step.
A 12.3-inch fully digital driver display is standard, with several configurable styles and crisp graphics.
MBUX receives over-the-air updates covering infotainment, maps and some vehicle functions. In 2024 Mercedes added features to cars already sold, such as the ChatGPT voice beta, though the scope is short of whole-vehicle OTA.
The mercedes me app handles remote start, lock/unlock and vehicle status, and the Digital Vehicle Key for iPhone/Apple Watch is standard. Some connected services need a subscription after the trial.
USB-C ports front and rear plus standard wireless charging; there is no household AC outlet.
Push-button start, remote start through the app and a standard phone-as-key (Digital Vehicle Key) are strong. Full KEYLESS-GO hands-free entry and trunk sit in packages on the volume trim.
The Parking package with a 360° surround camera and PARKTRONIC sensors is standard even on the volume trim. Optional rear-axle steering and Active Parking Assist add low-speed ease.
A color head-up display is available but tied to the top Pinnacle trim, not offered on the volume Premium trim.
8Use-Case FitOne of the E-Class's weakest categories.1.75C-
Generous 38.2 in rear headroom, Good IIHS LATCH ease of use and a trunk that swallows a large suitcase make family duty easy. The 35.8 in rear legroom can squeeze a rear-facing seat behind a tall driver.
The 2024 E-Class earned IIHS Top Safety Pick, and blind-spot assist, AEB and a 360 camera are standard. However, the updated moderate-overlap test rated Marginal for the rear passenger — directly relevant to families — and DISTRONIC plus Active Steering Assist are in the $1,950 Driver Assistance package.
A quiet cabin, benchmark front seats, a large trunk and a standard panoramic roof make it a strong four-person road-tripper. Rear climate zones, heated rear seats and a heated wheel all cost extra on the volume trim.
The 48V ISG makes start-stop almost unnoticeable and the 9-speed is smooth, so the car is relaxing in traffic. Touchscreen-buried climate controls and imprecise haptic wheel switches are daily irritants.
The E 350 4MATIC's 27 MPG combined is decent for the class, but premium fuel ($2,950/yr EPA) and Mercedes maintenance costs make it an above-average per-mile expense.
It is 194.9 in long with a 36.5 ft turning circle, and the standard 360° camera and PARKTRONIC make tight spaces manageable. Optional 4.5° rear-axle steering tightens it further.
No US tow rating and no factory hitch. A large trunk is the only cargo asset, so the car is not meaningfully work-capable.
A luxury cabin, large glass screens, 48V electronics and optional air suspension are built for boulevard duty rather than hard use.
No AC outlet, no roof rails, no hitch and no upfit ecosystem.
A superb highway cruiser with excellent seats, a quiet cabin and a supple ride, and optional DISTRONIC with route-based speed adaptation. The ~470-mile range from a 17.4 gal tank is good rather than exceptional, and the key ADAS costs extra.
Standard 4MATIC AWD on every 2024 US sedan handles snow and gravel roads, but low ground clearance, no roof rails and no tow rating keep it pavement-bound. The All-Terrain wagon is the adventure E-Class.
The trunk is much larger than the W213's and takes full-size suitcases on their sides, and the rear seatback splits and folds. There is no hitch or roof-rail option, and a sedan opening limits bulky gear.
9Driving ExperienceOne of the E-Class's strongest categories.3.17B
In Car and Driver's instrumented test the E 350 4MATIC pulled a strong 0.93 g on the skidpad, and body control is composed. Tuning is comfort-biased, so it feels secure rather than eager next to a 5 Series.
Steering is quick and accurate — especially with the optional rear-axle steering — but light and short on feedback.
A 150-ft 70–0 mph stop is excellent for a 4,279-lb sedan. The pedal is 'a smidge too soft,' in keeping with its comfort mission.
The 48V ISG fills turbo lag and makes start-stop almost undetectable, and the 9-speed shifts smoothly. The E 350 is quicker than claimed (5.8 s to 60 mph tested).
Well isolated at cruise, but the 2.0L four-cylinder is audible and a bit unremarkable under hard throttle — a step below the E 450's silky inline-six.
A 36.5 ft turning diameter is good for a 116.6 in wheelbase sedan; the optional rear-axle steering shrinks it further.
Wide seat and wheel adjustment, a supportive touring position and good sightlines. Points off because climate and several functions moved into the touchscreen and haptic wheel controls.
Competent and quicker than expected, but built for comfort rather than engagement — luxury defined as 'a dumb comfy ride.'
10Value & Market PositionGrades above the middle of the scale.3.00B
Standard kit on the 2024 E 350 4MATIC includes 4MATIC AWD, the 48V mild-hybrid 2.0T, 14.4-inch MBUX central screen and 12.3-inch driver display, wireless CarPlay/Android Auto, LED headlights and power memory seats. The passenger Superscreen, Burmester 4D audio, HUD, ventilated seats and the full Driver Assistance package cost extra, leaving it competitive with the 5 Series and A6 but behind the Genesis G80.
At launch Motor1 called the 2024 E-Class the most expensive car in its segment. A $63K four-cylinder base price sits above the similarly equipped BMW 530i and well above the G80, so the E-Class earns its price through refinement and tech rather than content per dollar.
The launch-year US sedan lineup is narrow: E 350 4MATIC and E 450 4MATIC only, each in Premium/Exclusive/Pinnacle trims. No RWD, no plug-in hybrid and no AMG sedan for MY2024; the AMG E 53 Hybrid and wider choice arrived in later years.
The E-Class remains among the best-selling mid-size luxury sedans in the US, trading leadership with the BMW 5 Series, though the segment keeps shrinking as buyers move to GLE-type SUVs and the changeover year dampened volume.
Mercedes-Benz is a top-tier aspirational luxury brand, and the E-Class is its core executive sedan with decades of brand equity.
As an all-new model in 2024, early examples transacted close to MSRP with limited cash incentives; MBFS lease subvention and leftover-2024 discounts appeared as MY2025 stock arrived.
2024 is the launch year of the sixth-generation W214 E-Class (debuted April 2023), with a new platform, MBUX Superscreen and 48V mild-hybrid powertrains throughout — no redesign risk for years.
Reviews praise its ride, refinement and cabin tech, and it won KBB's Best Luxury Mid-Size Car of 2024 plus an IIHS Top Safety Pick. Comparison tests against the new BMW 5 Series are split, and critics fault its fiddly controls and a smaller back seat and trunk.
