The verdict

A mixed-report mid-size luxury sedan, strong on safety and held back by ownership.

The 2022 E-Class is a comfort-first luxury sedan. It has a supple, quiet ride, one of the richest cabins in its class, a twin 12.3-inch MBUX cockpit, and top crash scores: five NHTSA stars and an IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK+. The trade-off is cost. The volume E 350 4MATIC typically lands around $63,500, its 255-hp four-cylinder needs premium fuel (about $3,300 a year), and much of the driver-assistance tech is optional. It suits buyers who value refinement and the badge more than running costs or trunk space.

Horsepower
255 hp (E 350 4MATIC volume trim; 362 hp E 450 4MATIC, 429 hp AMG E 53 — no AMG E 63 S for 2022)
32/100
#7 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The volume E 350 4MATIC uses the 2.0L turbo I4 with 48V EQ Boost; for 2022 the range tops out at the 429-hp AMG E 53 because the V8 AMG E 63 S sedan skipped the model year in the US.

Torque
273 lb-ft (E 350; 369 lb-ft E 450, 384 lb-ft AMG E 53)
46/100
#6 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Peak torque from the 2.0L turbo arrives low and holds across a broad plateau.

0–60 mph time
6.1 s (E 350 4MATIC, manufacturer; 4.9 s E 450 4MATIC, 4.4 s AMG E 53)
52/100
#7 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Manufacturer 0–60 figure for the volume E 350; competitive for a four-cylinder mid-size luxury sedan.

Powertrain refinement72
#6 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The EQ Boost 48V integrated starter-generator smooths stop-start and fills low-end response, but the four-cylinder sounds and feels ordinary for the price next to the silky E 450 inline-six.

Transmission behavior78
#4 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The 9G-TRONIC 9-speed automatic shifts smoothly and unobtrusively in Comfort mode; occasional hesitation on abrupt kickdown keeps it just short of the top band.

AWD/4WD availability80
#6 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

4MATIC AWD is optional on the E 350 and standard on the E 450 and AMG E 53 (4MATIC+ variable torque split); without the E 63 S for 2022 there is no drift-mode flagship, but AWD is available on every trim.

Powertrain lineup breadth62
#3 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Three gas powertrains (2.0L I4 and 3.0L I6 mild hybrids, AMG 53 I6) cover mainstream to sporty buyers, but the V8 E 63 S was absent for 2022 and no plug-in hybrid, diesel or EV E-Class sedan was sold in the US.

NHTSA rated both the RWD and 4MATIC 2022 E-Class sedans five stars overall, with five stars in every sub-rating.

IIHS awards & crashworthiness90
#4 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The 2022 E-Class sedan earned an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ with Good ratings across the small overlap (both sides), moderate overlap, side, roof and head restraint tests. The award applies only to cars with the optional front crash prevention, which holds it just below the top of the band.

Standard ADAS suite breadth62
#9 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

On the volume E 350, AEB (Active Brake Assist) and Blind Spot Assist are standard. Adaptive cruise, lane keeping/centering and even lane departure warning are only in the optional Driver Assistance Package, which is thin for a luxury sedan at this price.

Automatic emergency braking performance70
#10 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Vehicle-to-vehicle AEB rates Superior with both the standard and optional systems. Pedestrian detection is only Basic with the standard system by day and by night, and reaches Superior (day) only with the optional package.

Blind-spot & cross-traffic coverage72
#6 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Blind Spot Assist with Exit Warning (safe-exit alert) is standard. Active Blind Spot Assist with braking intervention and rear automatic braking / cross-traffic functions are optional.

Lane keeping & centering76
#2 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Once optioned, Active Steering Assist centers smoothly and reviewers rated it among the better systems of its era. On the volume trim even lane departure warning is optional, which keeps it out of the top band.

Adaptive cruise & highway assist78
#3 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

DISTRONIC with stop-and-go, route-based speed adaptation and Active Lane Change Assist is a refined full-speed-range highway assist. It is optional rather than standard on the E 350.

Hands-free driving availability20
#3 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

No hands-free driving mode is offered. Active Steering Assist requires hands on the wheel, and Mercedes' DRIVE PILOT Level 3 system was never offered on the W213 E-Class.

Headlight performance66
#7 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The curve-adaptive LED projector headlights rate Good, but the standard LED reflector units on other trims rate only Acceptable. High-beam assist is standard with both.

Outward visibility72
#5 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Sightlines are typical of a mid-size sedan: good forward visibility, with thickish rear pillars and a high trunk deck. A surround-view camera is available in the parking packages.

Child-seat (LATCH) usability80
#4 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

IIHS rates the E-Class sedan's LATCH hardware Good for ease of use. The rear seat takes two car seats comfortably, but three across is tight.

Rear legroom

42/100
#6 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Rear legroom in the W213 sedan is only adequate, and trails the Genesis G80 and BMW 5 Series.

Cargo/trunk volume
13.1 cu ft (40/20/40 split-folding rear seat)
31/100
#9 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The trunk is below the class average, though the split-folding rear seat helps with long items.

In-cabin storage & clever solutions60
#5 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The center-console bin, covered cupholders and door pockets are competitive but not innovative, and wireless charging is optional.

Seat comfort84
#6 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The front seats are supportive and widely adjustable, with memory as standard and ventilated multicontour massage seats optional. The rear bench suits two adults on long trips.

Ride quality84
#3 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The steel suspension with selective damping is supple and well controlled, and the optional Air Body Control is plusher still. Ride quality is a core E-Class strength.

Cabin quietness82
#3 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

A hushed, well-insulated cabin at highway speed; the E 350's four-cylinder becomes audible only under hard acceleration.

Climate & comfort features74
#5 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Heated memory front seats and dual-zone automatic climate are standard. The heated wheel and armrests ($1,050 Warmth & Comfort Package), ventilated seats and heated rear seats all cost extra on the E 350.

0/100
#6 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Volume-Trim Price
~$63,500 (E 350 4MATIC with Premium package and common options; $58,500 before options)
0/100
#5 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The E 350 4MATIC is the volume seller, listing at $58,500 with destination, and is typically delivered with the Premium package plus several options, landing in the low-to-mid $60Ks.

5-Year Maintenance & Repair Cost
~$8,000 over 5 years (published estimates range ~$3,700–$10,500)
15/100
#9 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Mercedes includes no scheduled maintenance for 2022, so dealer Service A/B visits plus repair exposure after the 4-yr/50k warranty put the E-Class near the top of the sedan band. Published projections vary widely; a mid-range figure consistent with adjacent E-Class years is used.

5-Year Resale Value Retention
~48% of MSRP retained after 5 years (source range ~47–53%)
43/100
#4 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

KBB records the 2022 E-Class down 36% after 3 years; extending the luxury-sedan curve through years 4–5 lands near half the MSRP retained, matching CarEdge's 47%-after-5-years E 350 figure.

Basic warranty
4 yr / 50,000 mi bumper-to-bumper
50/100
#2 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Mercedes-Benz New Vehicle Limited Warranty is 4 years / 50,000 miles — level with BMW and Audi, behind Genesis's 5-yr/60k.

Powertrain warranty
4 yr / 50,000 mi (no separate powertrain term)
0/100
#6 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Powertrain coverage ends with the basic warranty at 4 years / 50,000 miles, below the 5-year band floor.

Complimentary maintenance & perks40
#10 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

No included scheduled maintenance for 2022 (prepaid plans are extra-cost); owners get 24-hour Roadside Assistance for the warranty term and a Mercedes me connect trial — basic roadside only, behind rivals with included service.

Effective 5-Year Ownership Cost
$41,020 (≈$33,020 depreciation + $8,000 maintenance)
16/100
#8 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

$63,500 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (48% retained, or about $30,480) leaves about $33,020 in depreciation. Add the projected $8,000 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $41,020 in total.

6Reliability & QualityOne of the E-Class's strongest categories.2.78B-
Predicted reliability70
#3 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

2022 is the second year of the facelifted W213 (generation launched for 2017, refreshed for 2021) and a carry-over year, so most early-generation issues were sorted; predicted-reliability ratings sit around average for the class, with owner reports still citing electrical/MBUX glitches and occasional rattles.

Brand reliability track record65
#4 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Mercedes-Benz sits in the lower half of J.D. Power VDS and Consumer Reports brand rankings in this period — not bottom-tier like Alfa Romeo or Land Rover, but well behind Lexus, Toyota and Genesis and marginally behind BMW.

Recall & TSB history63
#3 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The volume E 350 is covered by two large multi-model fuel-pump campaigns carrying loss-of-drive-power risk plus a DISTRONIC hands-off-detection software fix; the fire-risk wiring/48V ground and battery-mount campaigns apply only to the six-cylinder E 450 and AMG E 53. Typical Mercedes activity, but the stalling risk is safety-relevant.

Powertrain durability reputation74
#4 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The volume E 350 uses the M264 2.0L turbo I4 (255 hp) with 48V EQ Boost starter-generator and the long-running 9G-Tronic 9-speed — both mature by 2022 with no systemic failure pattern. The fuel-pump recalls trace to a supplier component rather than engine design; the 48V hardware adds some long-term complexity.

Interior material quality88
#1 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The facelifted W213 cabin pairs the twin 12.3-inch widescreen MBUX display with open-pore wood, quality upholstery and 64-color ambient lighting; reviewers rank it among the richest cabins in the segment.

Fit & finish82
#2 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Mid-to-late-cycle W213 production is well sorted, with tight panel gaps and a quiet cabin; scattered owner reports of rattles and trim squeaks keep it short of the very top.

Dealer & service network80
#2 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Roughly 380 Mercedes-Benz dealers across the US — denser than BMW or Audi, covering all major metros and most secondary markets. Service satisfaction is mid-pack among luxury brands.

Parts availability & repair cost52
#7 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Mercedes parts and labor are among the most expensive in the industry, but the W213 is a high-volume, long-running generation with a well-developed aftermarket and independent-shop familiarity.

7Technology & InfotainmentMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.64C+
Touchscreen size
12.3 in MBUX widescreen touchscreen (standard)
62/100
#3 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The facelifted W213 carries a standard twin-12.3-inch widescreen cockpit.

Infotainment UX & responsiveness72
#4 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

MBUX is quick, with sharp graphics and natural voice control. The touchpad and finicky capacitive steering-wheel swipe controls drew criticism.

Wireless CarPlay / Android Auto60
#4 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard but wired-only (USB-C) on the 2022 W213 sedan; wireless projection arrived with the 2024 W214.

Voice control & native navigation82
#4 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The 'Hey Mercedes' natural-language assistant is among the best in the segment. Native navigation is good, with augmented-reality guidance available.

Audio system quality80
#7 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The standard FrontBass system is solid, and an excellent Burmester surround system (13 speakers, 590 W) is available.

Digital instrument cluster88
#2 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

A configurable 12.3-inch digital cluster with several display styles is standard.

OTA update capability55
#6 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

MBUX receives over-the-air map and infotainment updates, but not the feature-adding whole-vehicle OTA of later MB.OS cars.

Companion app & remote functions72
#4 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The Mercedes me app offers remote lock, locate and remote start/climate, but some services need a subscription after the trial.

Charging ports & device power64
#6 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

USB-C ports are standard up front. Wireless charging is optional rather than standard, and there is no AC outlet. For 2022 the rear USB-C addition went to the Coupe/Cabriolet, not the sedan.

Keyless & remote access72
#7 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Push-button start is standard. KEYLESS-GO proximity entry and HANDS-FREE ACCESS come in the Premium Package, and the app provides remote start.

Camera & parking aids72
#3 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

A rear camera is standard. The 360-degree camera, parking sensors and Active Parking Assist come in the Parking Assistance Package.

Head-up display availability62
#4 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

A color head-up display is an extra-cost option on the E 350, not standard.

8Use-Case FitOne of the E-Class's weakest categories.1.73C-
Kid & car-seat practicality58
#6 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The IIHS rates the LATCH Good and the rear doors open wide, but a 13.1 cu ft trunk and 36.2 in of rear legroom make strollers and rear-facing seats a squeeze.

Family safety package76
#8 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

An IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK+ with standard AEB, Blind Spot Assist and (new for 2022) automatic high beams. The award needs the optional front crash prevention, and the full DISTRONIC suite and the Good-rated projector headlights are extra-cost.

Family road-trip comfort72
#4 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Excellent ride and seats for four. Heated rear seats and rear climate are optional, and the trunk limits a family's luggage.

Daily driving ease82
#4 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Smooth 48V EQ Boost stop-start, a supple ride and optional Active Stop-and-Go make it a relaxing commuter.

Commuting cost efficiency50
#5 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

24 MPG combined on premium fuel (E 350 4MATIC; 26 MPG RWD) is average to below average for a luxury four-cylinder.

Parking & maneuverability70
#1 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

A reasonable turning circle for the class, with the 360-degree camera and Active Parking Assist available; the sedan's length still needs care in tight garages.

Work capability20
#6 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Mercedes-Benz USA publishes no US tow rating for the E-Class sedan, and the trunk is modest; this is not a work vehicle.

Durability for work duty40
#2 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The luxury-oriented cabin and complex electronics suit it poorly to hard use, despite a solid chassis.

Jobsite & upfit practicality15
#5 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

No onboard AC power, no factory tow hitch and few work provisions.

Long-distance comfort & range82
#4 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Superb highway comfort and quiet, roughly 418 miles of range, and a strong optional DISTRONIC suite make it an excellent mile-eater.

Outdoor & adventure capability40
#5 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Optional 4MATIC AWD handles snow and gravel roads, but low ground clearance and no tow rating keep the sedan pavement-bound; the All-Terrain wagon is the adventure variant.

Gear & luggage flexibility50
#4 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The 40/20/40 split-folding rear seat gives pass-through flexibility, but the trunk is small and there are no roof rails or hitch.

9Driving ExperienceOne of the E-Class's strongest categories.2.67C+
10Value & Market PositionMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.58C+
Standard equipment generosity67
#8 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

For 2022 the E 350 gains standard adaptive LED headlights with Adaptive Highbeam Assist, on top of dual 12.3-in MBUX displays, the 48V mild-hybrid turbo-four and automatic emergency braking; adaptive cruise and the full Driver Assistance suite remain costly options, typical of German luxury.

Feature value per dollar62
#9 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Priced in line with the BMW 5 Series and Audi A6 but above the Genesis G80 and Cadillac CT5 for similar content, and the E 350's 255-hp four is merely adequate for $56K+. Fair value, not a bargain.

Trim & configuration breadth76
#2 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The 2022 sedan spans E 350 RWD/4MATIC, E 450 4MATIC and AMG E 53 from $54,950 to $75,000, with wagon, coupe and cabriolet body styles alongside; the V8 AMG E 63 S sedan skipped 2022, leaving a gap at the top.

Sales popularity & market acceptance64
#4 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The E-Class remains one of the two best-selling midsize luxury sedans in the US alongside the 5 Series, but 2022 volume was constrained by chip shortages and a long-run shift to SUVs; it no longer appears among Mercedes' volume leaders (GLC, GLE, C-Class).

Brand desirability & image92
#1 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Mercedes-Benz is among the most aspirational luxury brands, and the E-Class is its core executive sedan with a long loyal following.

Deals & incentive availability48
#5 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

MY2022 sold through the 2021–2022 semiconductor-shortage market, when luxury inventory was thin and discounts largely disappeared; buyers saw modest lease support at best and often paid sticker.

Model freshness55
#5 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

MY2022 is the sixth year of the W213 generation but only the second after the substantial 2021 facelift (new MBUX, styling, mild-hybrid engines), so it is mid-cycle and current; the replacement W214 was still over a year away.

Critical reception & awards76
#3 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The refreshed E-Class was consistently praised for ride comfort, refinement, cabin quality and MBUX tech (KBB expert 4.7/5), a frequent runner-up to the BMW 5 Series and Genesis G80 in comparisons rather than the outright pick.
