The verdict

A struggling compact suv, strong on reliability and held back by technology.

The 2017 RAV4 Hybrid is a sensible, low-drama used buy. It has standard all-wheel drive, 32 MPG combined and some of the best reliability ratings of its era, and a full radar-based safety suite was standard on every trim that year. The trade-offs are an aging design: no Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, a 6.1-inch screen, a loud engine when pushed and a 3-year/36,000-mile basic warranty that is long gone. Buy it for what it costs to own, not for its cabin or how it drives.

Detailed scoring by subject

1Performance & PowertrainOne of the RAV4's weakest categories.0.04F
Horsepower
194 hp net system (hybrid); gas 2.5L 176 hp
11/100
#3 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

The 2017 RAV4 Hybrid (XA40, second year of the hybrid) pairs the 2.5L 2AR-FXE Atkinson four with front and rear electric motors for 194 hp net — about 18 hp more than the gas model, but modest for the segment band.

Torque
152 lb-ft (engine only; combined system torque not published)
6/100
#12 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Toyota does not publish a combined system torque figure for this Hybrid Synergy Drive; the engine alone makes 152 lb-ft, which understates the electric assist off the line.

0–60 mph time
8.1 s (Toyota claim); tested 7.4–8.2 s
23/100
#3 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

The hybrid is the quicker RAV4 of this generation, nearly a second faster than the 9.0 s gas model, but still mid-pack against turbocharged compact rivals.

Powertrain refinement62
#3 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Engine-to-electric transitions are smooth and the electric torque gives brisk around-town response, but the 2.5L becomes loud and coarse when worked hard at highway merging speeds.

Transmission behavior60
#6 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

The eCVT never hunts for gears and is seamless in normal driving, but holds high revs with the familiar rubber-band drone under heavy throttle.

Max towing capacity
1,750 lbs (hybrid and gas, properly equipped)
11/100
#7 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Light-duty rating matching the gas RAV4; adequate for a small utility trailer or jet ski, but below 3,500-lb compact rivals with optional V6 or turbo engines.

AWD/4WD availability66
#3 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Every RAV4 Hybrid has standard AWD-i (E-Four) with an electric rear motor, and the gas model offers Dynamic Torque Control AWD with a lock mode on all trims; neither has low range or torque vectoring, and the hybrid's rear motor is a traction aid rather than a rugged system.

Off-road capability35
#4 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Pavement-oriented crossover with modest clearance, no skid plates, no dedicated off-road trim and no terrain modes on the hybrid; fine for gravel and snowy roads only.

Powertrain lineup breadth55
#1 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Two powertrains for 2017 — the 176-hp 2.5L gas four (FWD or AWD) and the 194-hp hybrid; no turbo, V6, plug-in or EV option yet (the RAV4 Prime PHEV arrived for 2021).

2Efficiency & RangeOne of the RAV4's strongest categories.3.23B+
3SafetyMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.38C+
NHTSA overall rating
5 stars overall (4★ frontal, 5★ side, 4★ rollover)
100/100
#1 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

NHTSA rated the 2017 RAV4 (including Hybrid) 5 stars overall; nhtsa.gov itself returned 403, so the figure is corroborated secondhand.

IIHS awards & crashworthiness74
#6 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Good in driver small overlap, moderate overlap, side, roof and head restraints, but Poor in passenger-side small overlap. The TSP+ award applies only with the LED headlights of upper trims, not the volume XLE Hybrid.

Standard ADAS suite breadth66
#2 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

For 2017, TSS-P is standard on every grade (AEB with pedestrian detection, lane departure alert with steering assist, auto high beams, radar cruise). Blind Spot Monitor with RCTA is only optional on the volume XLE Hybrid.

Automatic emergency braking performance66
#5 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

IIHS rated vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention Superior, avoiding collisions at both 12 and 25 mph. Pedestrian detection is fitted, but IIHS had no pedestrian or night test for this year, so it is unproven.

Blind-spot & cross-traffic coverage52
#7 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

BSM with RCTA is alert-only (no active braking or safe-exit). It is standard from SE up but an option on the volume XLE grades.

Lane keeping & centering45
#3 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

TSS-P Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist only nudges the wheel when the car is drifting out of the lane. There is no lane centering, so it is basic compared with later systems.

Adaptive cruise & highway assist55
#4 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Dynamic Radar Cruise Control is standard on every trim, which was notable for 2017. However, the TSS-P system is high-speed only, with no stop-and-go and no combined highway assist.

Hands-free driving availability5
#1 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

No hands-free driving system is offered on any 2017 RAV4.

Headlight performance42
#2 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

On the volume XLE Hybrid the halogen projectors are rated Marginal, and the LED projectors on SE/Limited/Platinum only reach Acceptable. Auto high beams are standard through TSS-P.

Outward visibility66
#5 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

The upright greenhouse gives good forward and side sightlines, but thick rear pillars and a small rear window create rear-quarter blind zones. Only a backup camera is standard; the 360-degree Bird's Eye View is Platinum-only.

Child-seat (LATCH) usability60
#8 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

IIHS rated LATCH Marginal on RAV4s built before April 2017 and Good on those built after March 2017, so a 2017 model's rating depends on its build date. The wide rear doors and roomy back seat help fit car seats.

4Space & ComfortOne of the RAV4's weakest categories.1.10D
Seating capacity
5 seats (two rows; no third row offered)
25/100
#2 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

All 2017 RAV4s, hybrid included, are two-row five-seaters. The XA40 generation never offered a third row in the US.

Front headroom
39.8 in (without moonroof; moonroof-equipped XLE is less)
56/100
#8 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

The front headroom figure published without a moonroof is generous for a compact SUV. The volume XLE Hybrid comes with a standard power moonroof, which reduces it.

Front legroom
42.6 in
58/100
#4 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Front legroom is mid-pack for the compact SUV class.

Rear headroom
38.9 in
72/100
#8 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

The upright roofline gives rear passengers ample headroom for the class.

Rear legroom
37.2 in (rear seat reclines)
60/100
#11 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Rear legroom is competitive with the CR-V of the same era, and the rear seatbacks recline several degrees on every grade.

Third-row usability8
#9 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

There is no third row on any 2017 RAV4, so it cannot carry more than five occupants.

Cargo/trunk volume
35.6 cu ft behind 2nd row (gas RAV4 38.4)
19/100
#2 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

The hybrid battery under the cargo floor takes about 3 cu ft from the gas model's space. The rest is a large, square hold for a compact SUV.

Max cargo volume
70.6 cu ft, rear seats folded (gas RAV4 73.4)
35/100
#3 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Maximum cargo space is near the top of the compact class even after the battery's intrusion.

In-cabin storage & clever solutions60
#4 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Practical storage includes a wide dash shelf, a deep center console and usable door pockets, plus a 60/40 rear seat that folds nearly flat. There is no onboard power outlet or underfloor trick on the hybrid, because the battery occupies that space.

Seat comfort62
#9 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

The front seats are supportive enough for daily use, and the rear bench is roomy with recline. The XLE's fabric seats offer only power driver adjustment with limited lumbar support, and some reviewers found the cushions flat on long drives.

Ride quality63
#9 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

On the XLE's 17-inch wheels the ride is well sorted and supple, unsettled only by big bumps and washboard surfaces. Upper trims on 18-inch wheels ride more jarringly.

Cabin quietness50
#10 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

The 2016 refresh added insulation and electric-only operation is silent at low speed. Reviewers still called the road and wind noise at highway speed 'omnipresent' and disappointing.

Climate & comfort features40
#12 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

The XLE gets dual-zone automatic climate control. Heated front seats are limited to SE/Limited/Platinum, the heated steering wheel is Platinum-only (a gas grade), and no grade offers ventilated seats or remote climate.

5Cost of OwnershipOne of the RAV4's strongest categories.2.74B-
Base MSRP
$25,850 (gas LE FWD, $24,910 + $940 destination); cheapest Hybrid (XLE AWD) $29,970
98/100
#10 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

The 2017 RAV4 line opens with the gas LE FWD; the hybrid scored here starts higher, as the XLE Hybrid AWD, because every 2017 RAV4 Hybrid came with AWD.

Volume-Trim Price
$29,970 (Hybrid XLE AWD incl. $940 destination); Hybrid SE ~$33,125, Hybrid Limited $34,970
93/100
#10 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

The XLE was the volume RAV4 Hybrid trim in 2017, and AWD (Electronic On-Demand AWD with a rear motor) came standard, so it is the representative transaction.

5-Year Maintenance & Repair Cost
~$4,800 over 5 years (estimates range ~$1,900–$6,000)
72/100
#5 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Upkeep on the RAV4 is low for the class. Hybrid Synergy Drive has no starter or alternator and uses its brakes less, and ToyotaCare paid for the first two years of scheduled service. Published estimates vary a lot, so the figure here sits mid-range.

5-Year Resale Value Retention
~60% of MSRP retained at 5 years (estimates 59–75%)
67/100
#3 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

The RAV4 Hybrid is one of the strongest value holders among compact SUVs. The 2017 car benefited further from the 2021–2022 used-car price spike, which hit right around its fifth year; listing-based data for the 2017 model shows about 41% depreciation.

Basic warranty
3 yr / 36,000 mi bumper-to-bumper
0/100
#4 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Toyota's 36-month/36,000-mile basic coverage is the minimum in the segment; Hyundai and Kia offered 5 yr / 60,000 mi.

Powertrain warranty
5 yr / 60,000 mi powertrain; hybrid components 8 yr / 100,000 mi
0/100
#4 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

The headline powertrain term is the class minimum of 5 yr / 60,000 mi, but the hybrid-specific components, including the traction battery, are covered for 8 years / 100,000 miles. (The 10-year battery coverage began only with the 2020 model year.)

Complimentary maintenance & perks70
#2 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

ToyotaCare covers factory-scheduled maintenance for 2 years / 25,000 miles, plus 2 years of roadside assistance with unlimited mileage. That beats Honda and Ford, which included no scheduled maintenance, but it is a short plan, and the 2017 car has no connected-services trial worth noting.

Effective 5-Year Ownership Cost
$16,788 (≈$11,988 depreciation + $4,800 maintenance)
85/100
#4 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

$29,970 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (60% retained, or about $17,982) leaves about $11,988 in depreciation. Add the projected $4,800 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $16,788 in total.

6Reliability & QualityThe RAV4's best-graded category.3.66A-
Predicted reliability88
#1 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

The 2017 RAV4 Hybrid is the second model year of the 2016 XA40 refresh, on a generation that had been in production since 2013, and both major sources rate it well above average: Consumer Reports calls it much more reliable than other 2017 vehicles and J.D. Power rates its quality & reliability 'Great'.

Brand reliability track record86
#1 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Around the 2017 model year Toyota sat in the top tier of both Consumer Reports' brand reliability rankings and J.D. Power's Vehicle Dependability Study, a standing it held consistently through the period.

Recall & TSB history80
#1 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Only three NHTSA campaigns cover the 2017 RAV4, two of them trivial (spare-tire pressure, a load-capacity label); the 12V battery campaign carries a fire risk but concerns replacement batteries shifting in the tray rather than a factory defect in the hybrid system.

Powertrain durability reputation90
#1 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

The RAV4 Hybrid uses the 2.5L 2AR-FXE Atkinson four with Toyota's planetary e-CVT hybrid transaxle and rear e-motor AWD, the same Hybrid Synergy Drive family proven over hundreds of thousands of miles in the Camry Hybrid and Lexus ES/NX hybrids, with no systemic engine, transaxle or traction-battery failures recorded for this model year.

Interior material quality55
#8 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

The 2016 refresh added soft-touch stitched dash trim on upper trims, but reviewers of the XA40 consistently cite a lot of hard, plain plastic and an unremarkable design that trails the Mazda CX-5 and Honda CR-V for perceived quality.

Fit & finish78
#1 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

As a mature fifth-year generation built in Japan and Woodstock, Ontario (the Hybrid in Japan), assembly was consistent; owner complaints are scattered rather than patterned around panel gaps or rattles.

Dealer & service network86
#1 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Toyota has one of the densest dealer networks in the US (roughly 1,200+ stores), and hybrid service is routine at all of them; service satisfaction sits around the mass-market average.

Parts availability & repair cost85
#1 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

The RAV4 was among America's best-selling SUVs, so OEM, used and aftermarket parts are abundant and repair costs run below the compact SUV average; the 2AR-FXE hybrid hardware is shared widely across Toyota and Lexus hybrids, keeping used and remanufactured hybrid parts plentiful.

7Technology & InfotainmentThe RAV4's lowest-graded category.0.00F
Touchscreen size
6.1 in (XLE Entune Audio Plus); 7.0 in on Limited / JBL package
0/100
#3 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

The volume XLE Hybrid uses the 6.1-inch Entune Audio Plus screen. Only the Limited and the JBL Premium package step up to 7.0 inches, which is small even by 2017 standards.

Infotainment UX & responsiveness45
#8 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

First-generation Entune is simple and keeps physical volume and tuning knobs, but the small screen is low-resolution and slow, and its app integration relies on a paired phone.

Wireless CarPlay / Android Auto3
#12 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were not offered on any 2017 RAV4, wired or wireless. Toyota added CarPlay with the 2019 redesign.

Voice control & native navigation38
#12 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

The XLE gets only phone-tethered Scout GPS 'Connected Navigation'. Integrated navigation needs the Limited or the JBL package, and voice recognition is command-based and basic.

Audio system quality52
#10 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

The XLE has an ordinary six-speaker system with HD Radio and SiriusXM. An 11-speaker, 576-watt JBL system is optional on SE and Limited and standard on Platinum.

Digital instrument cluster35
#4 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Every grade uses analog dials. The XLE has a small multi-information display between them, and the SE gets a 4.2-inch color TFT; there is no full-digital cluster.

OTA update capability8
#8 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

This generation of Entune has no over-the-air software updates. Map and software updates require a dealer visit or USB.

Companion app & remote functions22
#10 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

The Entune phone app exists mainly to feed apps and Scout GPS to the head unit. There is no remote start, remote lock or vehicle locate from a phone on the XLE.

Charging ports & device power30
#8 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

There is a single USB 2.0 port up front plus 12V outlets. No USB-C, no rear USB, no AC outlet, and wireless charging is not available on the volume trim.

Keyless & remote access50
#10 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

The XLE Hybrid includes Smart Key proximity entry and a power liftgate, unlike the gas XLE. Remote start and phone-as-key are not offered, and a hands-free kick liftgate is limited to the gas Platinum.

Camera & parking aids42
#7 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

A low-resolution backup camera is standard, and Blind Spot Monitor with RCTA is only optional on the XLE. The Bird's Eye View 360 camera with Perimeter Scan is Platinum-only, and that is a gas grade, so no hybrid can have it.

Head-up display availability3
#10 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

No 2017 RAV4 grade offers a head-up display.

Kid & car-seat practicality68
#3 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Wide rear doors, a flat rear floor, a reclining rear bench with 37.2 in of legroom and a 35.6 cu ft cargo hold make family logistics easy. LATCH access was rated Marginal on RAV4s built before April 2017 and Good on later builds.

Family safety package68
#1 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

TSS-P (AEB with pedestrian detection, lane departure alert, radar cruise) is standard on every grade, alongside a 5-star NHTSA rating. Against that, blind-spot monitoring costs extra on the XLE, the XLE's halogen headlights rate Marginal, and the passenger-side small overlap result is Poor.

Family road-trip comfort55
#6 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

The rear seat is roomy and reclines, and the cargo hold takes a family's luggage. Rear amenities are thin, though: no rear USB, no rear-seat entertainment and no heated rear seats, and highway road noise wears on long trips.

Daily driving ease68
#4 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Silent electric creep at low speed, a smooth eCVT and a composed ride make it an easy commuter. Radar cruise works only at highway speed and the brake pedal's regen blending is mushy, which takes some of the shine off stop-and-go driving.

Commuting cost efficiency72
#1 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

With an EPA rating of 34 city and 32 combined MPG, standard AWD and regular fuel, it was among the cheapest compact SUVs to commute in for 2017. The hybrid advantage is largest in city driving.

Parking & maneuverability70
#1 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

A compact footprint and a tight 34.8-ft turning circle on the XLE's 17-inch wheels make it easy in town. Thick rear pillars and the lack of parking sensors or a 360 camera on hybrid grades rule out a higher score.

Work capability28
#6 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

A 1,750-lb tow rating and a cargo floor raised by the battery limit it to light errands such as small utility trailers and home-store runs.

Durability for work duty62
#1 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Toyota's Hybrid Synergy Drive has a strong long-life record, including taxi and rideshare use. The car-based unibody and the hybrid's packaging are not built for hard work abuse.

Jobsite & upfit practicality30
#7 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Roof rails and cargo tie-down hooks are fitted, but there is no onboard AC power, no work-oriented trim and only a modest accessory ecosystem.

Long-distance comfort & range58
#6 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

About 474 miles of range from the 14.8-gal tank and a supple ride make it a capable tourer. Road and wind noise, a coarse engine when worked hard and high-speed-only radar cruise without lane centering limit its endurance.

Outdoor & adventure capability52
#4 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Standard electric AWD-i and about 7 in of ground clearance are fine for gravel, snow and trailheads. There are no terrain modes, no skid plates and only a 1,750-lb tow rating for toys.

Gear & luggage flexibility60
#4 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

The 60/40 rear seat folds nearly flat to 70.6 cu ft and roof rails are standard on the XLE. The battery raises the hybrid's load floor and removes the underfloor bin the gas model has.

Handling & agility56
#8 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

It is secure and predictable with reasonable body control, but the extra weight of the hybrid battery and rear motor dulls it. Reviewers found it competent rather than engaging next to the CX-5 and Escape.

Steering feel50
#8 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

The electric power steering is light and accurate enough around town but numb on center and through corners.

Braking confidence48
#11 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

It took 123 ft to stop from 60 mph in testing, a few feet longer than average. The pedal is long and mushy, and the regen-to-friction handoff is noticeable, which makes smooth stops hard.

Powertrain smoothness & response64
#3 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Engine stop/start and EV-to-hybrid transitions are seamless, and the electric torque gives brisk response around town. Under hard throttle the eCVT holds high revs with a rubber-band feel.

Drivetrain noise & vibration55
#7 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

It is silent in EV mode and quiet at a cruise, but the 2.5L four turns buzzy and coarse when pushed for highway merges or climbs.

Turning circle
34.8 ft curb-to-curb (XLE, 17-in wheels); ~36.7 ft on 18-in wheels
90/100
#1 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

It has a tight turning circle on the volume XLE Hybrid's 17-inch wheels. Trims on 18-inch wheels turn a wider circle.

Driving position & ergonomics66
#8 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

A high, upright seating position, easy step-in height and logical physical climate controls make it comfortable for most drivers. Only the driver's seat is powered on the XLE, the telescoping range is modest, and thick rear pillars limit the over-shoulder view.

Fun-to-drive factor42
#5 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

It is a competent, efficient appliance that is quicker than the gas RAV4, but the numb steering, mushy brakes and CVT drone leave little reason to take the long way home.

10Value & Market PositionGrades above the middle of the scale.2.72B-
Standard equipment generosity74
#1 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

For 2017, Toyota Safety Sense P became standard on every RAV4 grade: pre-collision braking with pedestrian detection, lane departure alert with steering assist, automatic high beams and adaptive cruise. Rivals like the CR-V and Escape charged extra or required upper trims for those features. The Hybrid XLE also includes AWD, a moonroof, dual-zone climate and a 6.1-in touchscreen, though Entune and its smartphone integration were weak.

Feature value per dollar76
#1 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

The Hybrid XLE cost only $800 more than a gas XLE AWD. For that it brought 18 more horsepower, standard AWD and roughly 32 MPG combined against 25. That made it the best-value RAV4 and one of the few AWD hybrids around $30k, though the interior quality and infotainment lagged the 2017 CR-V and CX-5.

Trim & configuration breadth74
#2 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

The 2017 range was wide: gas LE, XLE, SE, Limited and the new Platinum, in FWD or AWD. The hybrid came as XLE, SE and Limited, all AWD, with a lower-priced LE Plus listed by some sources. That covers most budgets, but the hybrid side starts around $30k and had no FWD option.

Sales popularity & market acceptance92
#1 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

In calendar 2017 the RAV4 passed the Honda CR-V to become America's best-selling SUV, with about 407,600 units, and the Hybrid made up a fast-growing share of that.

Brand desirability & image80
#1 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Toyota's reputation for reliability and strong resale, plus its leadership in hybrids since the Prius, gives the RAV4 Hybrid a loyal, practical-minded following. It is not an aspirational brand.

Deals & incentive availability58
#8 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Gas RAV4s often had low-APR financing and modest cash incentives as the XA40 neared the end of its run. The hybrid was in short supply, though, and usually sold near MSRP with only occasional small deals.

Model freshness42
#10 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

2017 was the fifth model year of the XA40 generation that launched for 2013, a year after the 2016 facelift. The all-new TNGA-based XA50 arrived for 2019, so buyers were getting an aging platform shortly before a redesign.

Critical reception & awards60
#5 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Reviewers praised the hybrid's fuel economy, roomy cabin and standard safety tech, but marked it down for a noisy engine, a firm ride and dated infotainment. It typically ranked mid-pack behind the CR-V, CX-5 and Forester in comparison tests, and won an IIHS Top Safety Pick rather than any 10Best-type award.
