The verdict

A struggling compact suv, strong on reliability and held back by technology.

The 2018 RAV4 Hybrid is a sensible used buy. It gets 32 MPG combined with standard AWD, has one of the best reliability records in its class, and holds about 70% of its value after five years. The trade-off is that 2018 was the last year of a generation that dated back to 2013. It has no Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, only a 7-inch screen, adaptive cruise that doesn't work in stop-and-go traffic, and a noisy engine when you push it. Buy it to own for a long time with few problems, not for the tech or the drive.

    Risk

Adjusting the horizontal headlight beam can increase glare, reducing the visibility of an oncoming driver or the vehicle operator, increasing the risk of a crash.

    Remedy

Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will close the aiming caps on the headlights, free of charge. The recall began January 6, 2021. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331. Toyota's number for this recall is 20TA15.

Detailed scoring by subject

1Performance & PowertrainOne of the RAV4's weakest categories.0.50F
Horsepower
194 hp net combined (2.5L Atkinson hybrid, AWD — XLE Hybrid volume trim; all hybrid grades identical); gas 2.5L is 176 hp
11/100
#2 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

2018 is a carry-over year of the fourth-generation (XA40) RAV4, refreshed for 2016 when the hybrid arrived. Every hybrid grade (new LE Hybrid, XLE, SE, Limited) shares the 194 hp net system.

Torque
152 lb-ft @ 4,400 rpm (2.5L Atkinson engine, hybrid); electric motors add instant torque; Toyota publishes no net system torque (some spec aggregators list 206 lb-ft); gas model 172 lb-ft
6/100
#12 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Toyota does not quote a combined torque figure for the hybrid, so the engine peak is used, consistent with how other Toyota hybrids are scored here. The motors make launch feel stronger than the number suggests.

0–60 mph time
8.1 s (Toyota claim, hybrid); instrumented tests 7.6 s (XLE) to 8.2–8.3 s (Limited); gas RAV4 ~9.0 s
23/100
#2 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Toyota's own figure for the hybrid sits in the middle of the instrumented range; the hybrid is notably quicker than the 176 hp gas model, but still unhurried for the class.

Powertrain refinement66
#2 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Toyota's third-generation Hybrid Synergy Drive is smooth around town with seamless engine start/stop, and its motor torque makes it feel livelier than the gas RAV4. Under hard throttle the 2.5L drones loudly and the engine noise is a common review complaint; refinement trails the later 2019+ Dynamic Force hybrid.

Transmission behavior70
#2 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

The power-split eCVT never hunts or shifts harshly and is unobtrusive in normal driving, but produces the typical rubber-band rev flare and drone when floored. Better behaved than the gas model's 6-speed automatic in town.

Max towing capacity
3,500 lbs (gas Adventure AWD with standard Tow Prep Package); 1,750 lbs on all hybrid grades; 1,500 lbs other gas trims
36/100
#1 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

The new-for-2018 Adventure grade raised the RAV4's maximum rating to 3,500 lbs; the scored hybrid itself is limited to 1,750 lbs. Modest overall for a compact SUV.

AWD/4WD availability74
#3 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

AWD is standard on every RAV4 Hybrid via the electric rear-motor AWD-i system, and offered on gas trims with Dynamic Torque Control AWD and AWD lock. No terrain-mode selector or low range in this generation.

Off-road capability40
#3 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Pavement-oriented crossover with roughly 6.1–7 in of ground clearance, no skid plates, no terrain management and no low range. The 2018 Adventure grade adds styling, a raised ride and towing hardware but no real off-road kit; the hybrid gets none of it.

Powertrain lineup breadth58
#2 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Two powertrains: the 176 hp 2.5L gas with 6-speed automatic (FWD or AWD) and the 194 hp AWD hybrid. Having a hybrid was a segment differentiator in 2018, but there was no turbo, PHEV or EV option (the RAV4 Prime arrived years later).

2Efficiency & RangeOne of the RAV4's strongest categories.3.25B+
3SafetyMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.26C
NHTSA overall rating
5 stars overall (frontal 4★, side 5★, rollover 4★ / 17.4%) — 2018 RAV4 Hybrid AWD
100/100
#1 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

2018 is a carry-over year of the facelifted fourth-generation (XA40) RAV4; NHTSA rates the 2018 RAV4 Hybrid AWD five stars overall, with a 4-star frontal and 4-star rollover sub-rating.

IIHS awards & crashworthiness62
#10 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Earned a 2018 Top Safety Pick (not TSP+), but only with specific headlights. The passenger-side small overlap test, new for 2018, rated Poor, which is a real structural weakness against rivals of the same era that rated Good or Acceptable.

Standard ADAS suite breadth66
#3 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Toyota Safety Sense P is standard on every 2018 grade, so AEB with pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise, lane departure alert with steering assist and auto high beams are all standard, which was strong for 2018. Blind Spot Monitor with RCTA is only optional on the volume XLE Hybrid (standard on SE Hybrid and Limited), and lane centering isn't offered at all.

Automatic emergency braking performance72
#6 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

The standard Pre-Collision System earned IIHS's top Superior rating, avoiding collisions entirely in both the 12 mph and 25 mph tests. Pedestrian detection is fitted, but IIHS didn't run pedestrian or nighttime evaluations in 2018, so performance there is unverified.

Blind-spot & cross-traffic coverage52
#7 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

BSM and RCTA are alert-only, with no automatic rear braking or safe-exit warning. They're optional on the volume XLE Hybrid and absent from the LE Hybrid, though standard on the SE Hybrid and Limited.

Lane keeping & centering42
#5 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Only Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist: a warning plus a brief corrective nudge at the lane edge. There's no lane centering (Lane Tracing Assist arrived with the 2019 redesign), and owners report the assist intervenes inconsistently.

Adaptive cruise & highway assist45
#6 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Dynamic Radar Cruise Control is standard but high-speed only: it sets above about 30 mph and its distance-control mode cancels below about 25 mph, so it has no stop-and-go. It's competent on open highways but no help in traffic, and there's no combined highway assist.

Hands-free driving availability5
#3 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

No hands-free driving system is offered on any 2018 RAV4 grade, and the car has no lane centering to build one on.

Headlight performance40
#3 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

The volume XLE Hybrid's halogen projectors rate only Marginal. The LED projectors on the SE and Limited rate Acceptable, and no 2018 headlight earned Good. Automatic high beams are standard on all trims.

Outward visibility68
#6 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

The upright greenhouse and tall seating position give good forward and side sightlines, but thick rear pillars and a small rear window limit the view behind. The volume XLE has only a backup camera; the Bird's Eye View 360 camera is limited to Limited/Platinum.

Child-seat (LATCH) usability72
#3 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

IIHS rates the LATCH hardware Good, and the wide rear doors and generous rear legroom make fitting seats easy. Full lower anchors are limited to two positions (the center seat gets a tether only), so three-across is a squeeze.

4Space & ComfortOne of the RAV4's weakest categories.1.12D
Seating capacity
5 seats (two rows; no third row offered on the 2018 RAV4)
25/100
#2 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

2018 is a carry-over year of the fourth-generation (XA40) RAV4; every grade, gas or hybrid, is a two-row five-seater.

Front headroom
39.8 in (without moonroof); roughly 37.8 in with the moonroof fitted on XLE and up
56/100
#7 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Generous front headroom for a compact SUV without the sunroof; the XLE Hybrid volume trim's standard moonroof removes about two inches.

Front legroom
42.6 in
58/100
#4 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Competitive front legroom for the compact class.

Rear headroom
38.9 in
72/100
#6 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Tall, upright roofline gives the rear seat more headroom than most compact rivals.

Rear legroom
37.2 in (reclining 60/40 rear seat)
60/100
#12 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Rear legroom is roomy enough for adults and the flat floor helps the middle seat; slightly behind the CR-V's class-leading figure.

Third-row usability5
#9 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

The fourth-generation RAV4 has no third row in the US (the third-row option ended with the XA30). Scored at the bottom of the band per the item rule.

Cargo/trunk volume
35.6 cu ft behind rear seat (hybrid; battery raises floor slightly) — gas RAV4 38.4 cu ft
19/100
#4 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

The hybrid gives up about 3 cu ft to the gas model but still offers a large, square cargo hold by compact-SUV standards.

Max cargo volume
70.6 cu ft rear seats folded (hybrid); gas 73.4 cu ft
35/100
#4 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Near the top of the compact class for maximum cargo, with a mostly flat load floor when the 60/40 seat folds.

In-cabin storage & clever solutions60
#3 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Useful dash-shelf tray, decent console bin and door pockets, plus a 12V outlet in the cargo area; nothing innovative and the hybrid loses the gas model's underfloor space to the battery.

Seat comfort62
#7 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Front seats are supportive for most drivers and the rear bench reclines, but reviewers note flat cushioning and limited adjustment on lower grades (power driver seat from XLE/SE).

Ride quality60
#9 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

The hybrid's extra weight settles the ride somewhat, but the XA40 is still on the firm side over broken pavement, especially the SE on 18-inch wheels and sport tuning.

Cabin quietness52
#8 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Silent in EV mode at low speed, but road and wind noise at highway speed and engine drone under acceleration are common complaints despite the 2016 refresh's added insulation.

Climate & comfort features50
#9 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Dual-zone automatic climate is standard on the hybrid, but heated front seats are reserved for SE/Limited (optional on XLE) and there is no heated steering wheel, ventilated seats or rear vents on hybrid grades.

5Cost of OwnershipOne of the RAV4's strongest categories.2.97B-
Base MSRP
$28,380 (LE Hybrid AWD, $27,385 + $995 destination); gas RAV4 LE from ~$25,655
92/100
#11 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

The LE Hybrid is the cheapest way into the scored hybrid class in 2018, and AWD comes standard on every hybrid trim. Sources list its MSRP as $27,135 or $27,385, which reflects a mid-year price change.

Volume-Trim Price
~$30,275 (XLE Hybrid AWD, incl. $995 destination); hybrid lineup ~$28,400–$35,300
92/100
#9 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

The XLE Hybrid was the volume hybrid trim, about $1,900 above the LE. It added a power moonroof, dual-zone climate and alloy wheels.

5-Year Maintenance & Repair Cost
~$6,000 over 5 yr (estimates range ~$4,000–$8,000)
54/100
#9 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Edmunds puts 5-year maintenance plus repairs for the gas 2018 RAV4 LE at about $6,560, and the hybrid uses the same 2.5L engine with regenerative braking that reduces brake wear. CarEdge's estimates for the nameplate are lower. Edmunds' hybrid-specific page could not be retrieved, so this is a blended estimate.

5-Year Resale Value Retention
~70% of MSRP retained after 5 years (observed used values; pre-pandemic projections ~60%)
100/100
#1 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

The RAV4 Hybrid holds its value better than nearly any other compact SUV. iSeeCars puts its 5-year depreciation at about 25%, against roughly 40% for the class, and 2018 examples reached the 5-year mark during the post-2020 used-car price spike.

Basic warranty
3 yr / 36,000 mi bumper-to-bumper
0/100
#5 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Toyota's 36-month/36,000-mile basic warranty is the segment minimum; Hyundai and Kia offered 5 yr / 60,000 mi.

Powertrain warranty
5 yr / 60,000 mi powertrain; hybrid components incl. HV battery 8 yr / 100,000 mi
0/100
#5 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

The headline powertrain warranty is the class minimum, 5 yr / 60,000 mi. The hybrid system and battery get 8 yr / 100,000 mi; Toyota's 10 yr / 150,000 mi battery warranty did not start until the 2020 model year.

Complimentary maintenance & perks68
#2 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

ToyotaCare covers 2 years / 25,000 miles of scheduled maintenance plus 24-hour roadside assistance. That beats the CR-V and Escape, which include no free scheduled maintenance. The 2018 RAV4 had no connected-services trial, so there were no extra perks.

Effective 5-Year Ownership Cost
$15,083 (≈$9,083 depreciation + $6,000 maintenance)
90/100
#1 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

$30,275 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (70% retained, or about $21,193) leaves about $9,083 in depreciation. Add the projected $6,000 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $15,083 in total.

6Reliability & QualityThe RAV4's best-graded category.3.60A-
Predicted reliability86
#1 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

The 2018 RAV4 Hybrid is the third model year of the refreshed fourth-generation (XA40) hybrid, a mature design in its final year before the 2019 XA50 redesign; Consumer Reports rates it more reliable than the average 2018 vehicle and J.D. Power scores the 2018 RAV4 'Great'. Owner complaints centre on the 12V battery rather than the hybrid system.

Brand reliability track record86
#1 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Around the 2018 model year Toyota sat at or near the top of Consumer Reports' brand reliability rankings and well above the industry average in J.D. Power's Vehicle Dependability Study, a standing it had held for many years.

Recall & TSB history78
#2 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

NHTSA campaigns touching the 2018 RAV4 are few and mostly administrative (incorrect load-capacity labels); the one substantive campaign, a 12V battery tray/hold-down that can short a poorly fitting replacement battery, covers the 2013–2018 RAV4 broadly and is fixed with a tray and clamp swap. No powertrain or hybrid-system recalls for this year.

Powertrain durability reputation90
#1 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

The volume hybrid's 2.5L 2AR-FXE Atkinson four with Toyota's planetary e-CVT and rear-motor AWD-i is the same well-proven Hybrid Synergy Drive family used in the Camry Hybrid and Lexus NX/ES hybrids, with an extensive high-mileage record and no systemic engine, transaxle or traction-battery failures.

Interior material quality55
#8 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

The 2016 refresh added a stitched soft-touch dash band, but reviewers still describe the XA40 cabin as functional rather than upscale, with abundant hard plastics and a dated look that trails the Mazda CX-5 and Honda CR-V.

Fit & finish76
#3 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

As the last year of a long-running generation built in Kentucky, Ontario and Japan, assembly was consistent with few body-integrity complaints; reviewers noted wind and road noise rather than rattles or panel misalignment.

Dealer & service network86
#1 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Toyota has one of the densest dealer networks in the US (roughly 1,200+ stores), and hybrid service is routine at every one of them; service satisfaction is around the mass-market average.

Parts availability & repair cost86
#1 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

One of America's best-selling SUVs with a generation spanning 2013–2018, the RAV4 has abundant OEM, used and aftermarket parts and repair costs below the compact SUV average; hybrid components are shared widely across Toyota and Lexus models.

The XLE Hybrid's Entune Audio Plus uses a 7-inch touchscreen, the largest offered on any 2018 RAV4; the new LE Hybrid gets the 6.1-inch Entune Audio unit.

Infotainment UX & responsiveness40
#11 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

First-generation Entune is simple with physical knobs, but small, low-resolution screens, sluggish response and the clunky Entune app suite drew consistent criticism.

Wireless CarPlay / Android Auto5
#11 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were not offered on the 2018 RAV4 in any form; Toyota first added CarPlay to the RAV4 with the 2019 redesign.

Voice control & native navigation38
#9 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

XLE relies on Scout GPS, a phone-tethered navigation app shown on the head unit; true embedded navigation and basic voice recognition only on Limited. Siri Eyes Free is available.

Audio system quality55
#6 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Six-speaker base audio is adequate; an 11-speaker JBL system is available on Limited (and as an XLE option) and is a modest step up.

Digital instrument cluster30
#7 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Analog gauges with a small multi-information display between them (4.2-inch color TFT on SE/Limited, smaller on lower grades); no full-digital cluster offered.

OTA update capability10
#7 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

No over-the-air software updates; Entune head units and maps updated via dealer or USB only.

Companion app & remote functions25
#10 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

The Entune app provides streaming/search apps through the head unit but no remote lock, remote start or vehicle-locate functions; Toyota's Remote Connect arrived with the 2019 redesign.

Charging ports & device power30
#11 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

A single USB-A port in front plus 12V outlets; no USB-C, no rear USB, wireless charging only on top grades if at all.

Keyless & remote access45
#12 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Smart Key proximity entry with push-button start is an upper-grade feature (SE/Limited); the XLE volume trim uses a remote keyless fob, with a power liftgate available. No remote start or phone-as-key.

Camera & parking aids55
#3 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Rear camera standard (with projected guidelines from XLE); front/rear parking sensors and Bird's Eye View 360 camera reserved for the Limited.

Head-up display availability5
#4 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

No head-up display offered on any 2018 RAV4 grade.

Kid & car-seat practicality68
#3 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Wide-opening rear doors, a flat rear floor, generous rear headroom and a large square cargo hold make daily family logistics easy; LATCH access is average and there is no third row.

Family safety package74
#2 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Toyota Safety Sense P (automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane departure alert, auto high beams, adaptive cruise) is standard on every 2018 RAV4, and the RAV4 earned an IIHS Top Safety Pick; blind-spot monitoring is extra on the XLE and the passenger-side small-overlap test was a weak spot.

Family road-trip comfort58
#6 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Roomy reclining rear seat and good luggage space with all seats occupied, but thin rear amenities (no rear USB, no rear-seat heat) and a noisy highway cabin.

Daily driving ease70
#3 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Hybrid drive glides away silently in stop-and-go traffic, steering is light and the high seating position aids visibility; adaptive cruise is standard. Grabby brake feel and engine drone are minor annoyances.

Commuting cost efficiency72
#1 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

EPA 34/30/32 mpg city/hwy/combined with standard AWD, the best of any AWD compact SUV in 2018, and low Toyota consumable costs.

Parking & maneuverability70
#1 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Compact footprint and tight 34.8-ft turning circle make it easy in the city; rear camera standard but sensors and 360 camera limited to the Limited.

Work capability30
#4 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

1,750-lb tow rating handles only a small utility trailer, and payload is modest; useful cargo hold but not a work vehicle.

Durability for work duty62
#1 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Toyota's hybrid system and 2.5L engine have a strong long-term reliability record and the RAV4 Hybrid is common in fleets/rideshare, but it is a unibody crossover not built for hard work abuse.

Jobsite & upfit practicality32
#3 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Cargo tie-downs, roof rails and a hitch receiver option, but no onboard AC power and a carpeted, upscale-leaning interior; little work-focused provision.

Long-distance comfort & range63
#3 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

About 474 miles of range from the 14.8-gal tank at 32 mpg and standard adaptive cruise help on long trips, but highway road noise and a firm ride limit endurance.

Outdoor & adventure capability55
#3 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Standard electric AWD-i (rear motor) handles snow and gravel, with 6.1 in of ground clearance; tow rating is light and there is no locking center differential or off-road mode on the hybrid.

Gear & luggage flexibility66
#2 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

60/40 rear seat folds nearly flat into a 70.6 cu ft hold with roof rails available; the hybrid battery takes some underfloor storage.

9Driving ExperienceMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.06C
Handling & agility58
#6 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Secure and predictable with modest body roll; the hybrid's low-mounted battery helps balance, but grip and agility are unremarkable and trail the CR-V and CX-5. SE's sport tuning sharpens it slightly.

Steering feel52
#6 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Light, accurate electric steering that is easy in town but numb and offers little feedback at speed.

Braking confidence55
#9 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Stopping distances are average for the class, but the regen-to-friction blend makes the pedal feel grabby and nonlinear at low speed, a common complaint with Toyota hybrids of this era.

Powertrain smoothness & response66
#2 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Seamless engine start/stop and instant motor torque make it smooth and responsive around town; full-throttle response is rubber-bandy through the eCVT.

Drivetrain noise & vibration50
#6 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Near-silent in EV mode, but the 2.5L Atkinson four drones loudly under acceleration and on grades.

Turning circle
34.8 ft (17-in wheels, LE/XLE Hybrid); larger (~36.7 ft) on SE/Limited 18-in wheels
90/100
#1 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Very tight turning circle for a compact SUV on the volume XLE's 17-inch wheels.

Driving position & ergonomics64
#7 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Upright, high seating with good forward visibility and simple controls; the wide two-tier dash places some switches low and the screen is small and far, and the manual seat on lower grades limits adjustment.

Fun-to-drive factor48
#4 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Quicker than the gas RAV4 and pleasant enough, but it is a competent appliance rather than an engaging drive.

10Value & Market PositionMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.57C+
Standard equipment generosity68
#5 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Toyota Safety Sense P comes standard on every 2018 RAV4: automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-departure alert with steering assist, auto high beams and adaptive cruise control. Rivals like the CR-V and Rogue still kept some of that on upper trims. Every hybrid trim also gets AWD as standard. Against that, the LE Hybrid's 6.1-in screen has no Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, and it still uses a key with cloth seats.

Feature value per dollar72
#2 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

The hybrid AWD sells for about $28,400–$35,300, roughly $1,000–$2,000 above a comparable gas AWD RAV4. In return you get 32 MPG combined, the quickest acceleration in the RAV4 range and excellent resale value. Few rivals offered a hybrid at this price; the Nissan Rogue Hybrid was the closest. The dated cabin and infotainment hold the score back.

Trim & configuration breadth80
#1 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

The range was broad: the gas car came as LE, XLE, the new Adventure, SE, Limited and Platinum, in FWD or AWD, and the hybrid as LE, XLE, SE and Limited, all with AWD. Prices ran from about $25,700 to over $38,000.

Sales popularity & market acceptance95
#2 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

In calendar 2018 the RAV4 was America's best-selling SUV, ahead of the CR-V, at about 427,000 units. It was also Toyota's best-selling vehicle, outselling the Camry. The hybrid version was among the best-selling hybrids in the country.

Brand desirability & image78
#1 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Toyota's reputation for reliability and strong resale makes the RAV4 a default choice for mainstream buyers, and its hybrid leadership adds to that. It is not an aspirational brand, but buyers are very loyal and the name strongly supports resale.

Deals & incentive availability68
#7 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

2018 was the last year before the all-new 2019 model arrived. Dealers cleared outgoing gas RAV4s with cash-back and low-APR offers through late 2018. Discounts on the hybrid were smaller because demand was firmer, so deals were real but modest.

Model freshness30
#11 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

The 2018 model is the final year of the fourth-generation (XA40) RAV4, which launched for 2013 and was refreshed for 2016. Its platform, infotainment and powertrain were outdated, and the all-new TNGA-based 2019 model went on sale in late 2018, so buyers were getting a car that was about to be replaced.

Critical reception & awards56
#7 of 12 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Reviewers liked the hybrid's efficiency, roomy cabin and standard safety features but criticized its dull handling, noisy cabin and dated infotainment. In comparison tests it usually trailed the Honda CR-V (a 2018 Car and Driver 10Best pick) and the Mazda CX-5. It did earn an IIHS Top Safety Pick.
