The verdict
A mixed-report compact suv, strong on efficiency and held back by performance.
The 2023 RAV4 Hybrid is a safe, sensible pick for a compact SUV. It comes with AWD as standard, gets 40 MPG combined on regular gas, holds its value better than almost anything in the class, and has Toyota's strong reliability record behind it. The trade-offs are a gruff, droning engine, a firm ride, a short factory warranty, and 2023 market conditions that meant paying full sticker price. If you care about low running costs and peace of mind more than refinement, it is very hard to beat.

Detailed scoring by subject
1Performance & PowertrainThe RAV4's lowest-graded category.1.06D
2023 is a carry-over year of the fifth-generation (XA50, 2019–) RAV4; every hybrid trim uses the same 2.5L A25A-FXS + three-motor E-Four system rated 219 hp net. The Prime PHEV tops the range at 302 hp.
Toyota publishes only the 2.5L hybrid engine's 163 lb-ft; the front and rear motors add torque off the line, so real launch thrust is stronger than this figure suggests.
Two verified 2023 instrumented tests (XSE 7.27 s, Woodland 7.30 s) agree, and earlier same-generation hybrid tests land at 7.1–7.5 s. Quick for a mainstream compact SUV, though well short of the Prime.
The hybrid's motor-assisted launch and engine stop/start are smooth around town and noticeably more refined than the gas RAV4's coarse 2.5L, but the Atkinson four groans loudly when pushed and the engine note is a common reviewer complaint for this generation.
Toyota's planetary eCVT never hunts or shifts harshly, but the familiar rubber-band revving and drone under full throttle keep it out of the top band; the gas model's 8-speed automatic is the clumsier of the two.
The framework scores the maximum rating in any configuration: 3,500 lbs on the gas Adventure and TRD Off-Road with the tow package. The hybrid trims scored here are limited to 1,750 lbs, which is modest for the segment.
Electronic on-demand AWD (E-Four, dedicated rear motor) is standard on every 2023 RAV4 Hybrid, and the gas Adventure/TRD Off-Road/Limited get Dynamic Torque Vectoring AWD with rear driveline disconnect; Multi-Terrain Select and Trail Mode are on off-road trims. No low range.
8.1–8.6 in of ground clearance, the TRD Off-Road (gas) with TRD-tuned suspension and all-terrain tires, and the hybrid Woodland Edition with AT tires make it credible on gravel and trails; no locking diffs, low range or meaningful skid protection keeps it light-duty.
For 2023 the nameplate offers three distinct powertrains: 203-hp gas (FWD/AWD), 219-hp hybrid AWD and the 302-hp RAV4 Prime plug-in with ~42 mi EV range. No EV or turbo option, but broader than most compact SUV rivals.
2Efficiency & RangeThe RAV4's best-graded category.4.00A+
EPA rates the 2023 RAV4 Hybrid AWD at 40 MPG combined; all 2023 hybrids are AWD, so the volume XLE carries this figure.
EPA city rating for the hybrid AWD; the hybrid system recovers energy in stop-and-go driving.
EPA highway rating for the hybrid AWD volume configuration.
Computed from the EPA 40 MPG combined rating and the hybrid's 14.5-gallon tank; a long range for the segment.
EPA's published annual fuel cost at current standard assumptions for the 2023 RAV4 Hybrid AWD.
The 2023 RAV4 Hybrid runs on 87-octane regular unleaded with no charging requirement, so it is as cheap and flexible to fuel as a compact SUV gets.
3SafetyOne of the RAV4's strongest categories.3.33B+
The 2023 RAV4 (fifth generation XA50, carry-over model year on the 2019-launch TNGA-K platform) holds a 5-star NHTSA overall rating, and the hybrid variants share the same structure and rating.
The 2023 RAV4 earned an IIHS Top Safety Pick (not TSP+) on the tougher 2023 criteria. It is rated Good on driver and passenger small overlap, the original moderate overlap, roof strength and head restraints, but only Acceptable on the updated side test and Marginal on the updated moderate overlap test, which checks rear-seat occupant protection. Those two results are why it isn't in the top band.
Toyota Safety Sense 2.5 is standard on every 2023 RAV4 Hybrid, from the LE up. It includes the Pre-Collision System with pedestrian/cyclist detection, Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist, Lane Tracing Assist, Road Sign Assist and Automatic High Beams. Blind Spot Monitor and Rear Cross Traffic Alert are also standard on the hybrid LE, so all five core features come on the cheapest hybrid.
With the standard TSS 2.5 system, IIHS rates the 2023 RAV4 Superior on vehicle-to-vehicle and on both daytime and nighttime pedestrian front crash prevention. On the tougher, higher-speed vehicle-to-vehicle 2.0 test it scores only Acceptable.
Blind Spot Monitor and Rear Cross Traffic Alert are standard on every RAV4 Hybrid trim, but they only warn the driver. There is no active steering or braking intervention for blind-spot or rear cross-traffic hazards in the volume trim, and no safe-exit alert. Parking Support Brake is limited to upper trims/packages.
Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist and Lane Tracing Assist are standard. Reviewers find TSS 2.5 lane centering functional on well-marked highways but tentative, with some wander in curves and on faint markings, and it frequently nags for hands on the wheel. That puts it behind Honda's and Hyundai's tuning.
Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control with stop-and-go is standard on every trim and pairs with Lane Tracing Assist for single-lane highway assist. Reviewers find it capable, if somewhat abrupt on braking and slow to resume, and it has no automatic lane change.
The 2023 RAV4 offers no hands-free driving mode. Lane Tracing Assist and DRCC both require the driver's hands on the wheel, and there is nothing comparable to Ford BlueCruise or GM Super Cruise.
IIHS tested one headlight variant for the 2023 RAV4: LED projector low and high beams on all trims, with high-beam assist standard. It is rated Good. Curve-adaptive lighting is not offered.
The boxy fifth-generation body has an upright greenhouse and good forward sightlines. The thick C-pillars and small rear quarter windows limit the view over the shoulder, and that is offset by the standard backup camera and BSM. The Panoramic View Monitor (360° camera) is available only on upper trims such as the Limited and XSE.
IIHS rates the 2023 RAV4's LATCH Good+, which means the anchors are easy to use and extra LATCH positions are available. The rear seat is roomy for the class, with wide-opening rear doors, though fitting three car seats across is tight.
4Space & ComfortOne of the RAV4's weakest categories.1.10D
2023 is a carry-over year of the fifth-generation (XA50, 2019–) RAV4, a strictly two-row compact SUV; every 2023 grade seats five.
The volume Hybrid XLE comes without a moonroof unless the Convenience Package is added, so it keeps about 39.5 in; moonroof-equipped grades (XLE Premium and up) drop to 37.7 in.
41.0 in of front legroom is adequate but at the low end of the SUV band; Cars.com's 2023 hybrid review noted taller occupants may feel cramped up front.
The boxy roofline gives 39.5 in of second-row headroom regardless of moonroof, near the top of the compact-SUV range.
37.8 in fits adults behind average-height drivers, though Cars.com notes rivals such as the CR-V offer more rear legroom.
No third row is offered on any 2023 RAV4; it is a five-seat, two-row SUV.
37.5 cu ft behind the rear seat is competitive among compact SUVs but scores low against a fleet-wide SUV band that includes three-row models.
69.8 cu ft with the second row folded is about average for the compact class, with a 40-in cargo length behind the rear seat and a wide 39.4–59.0 in load floor.
A dash-width storage shelf, a decent console bin and door pockets, a height-adjustable cargo deck board and five USB ports on most hybrid grades make everyday storage good; the 120V/100W cargo outlet is limited to Woodland, Adventure and TRD Off-Road, so the volume XLE Hybrid has no standout feature.
Front seats are supportive for average-height drivers, but taller occupants feel cramped and cushions are firm on long drives; the volume XLE Hybrid has a manual driver's seat unless packaged, while the 60/40 rear bench reclines.
The ride is composed on smooth highway but firm and busy over broken pavement, with noticeable impact harshness that the CR-V and Escape absorb better.
Quiet at low speed on electric power, but the 2.5L engine drones whenever it runs hard and road noise is pronounced at highway speed — below the class's quieter models.
Dual-zone automatic climate with rear vents is standard, but heated front seats and wheel are a Weather Package option on the volume Hybrid XLE; ventilated front and heated rear seats are reserved for the Limited Weather Package.
5Cost of OwnershipGrades above the middle of the scale.2.77B-
The scored powertrain is the hybrid, so the entry figure is the RAV4 Hybrid LE, which comes with AWD as standard. Toyota raised prices during the 2023 model year, so some listings show the LE at about $31,560.
The XLE and XLE Premium make up the core of RAV4 Hybrid sales. XLE Premium is used here as the representative trim, which matches how the other RAV4 model years are scored.
Published estimates for the RAV4 diverge widely. Edmunds' TCO is conservative and CarEdge's figure is much lower, so a blended value of about $5,500 is used. Either way, upkeep is low for the class, and ToyotaCare covers the first two years.
The RAV4 Hybrid is the compact-SUV benchmark for holding its value. The hybrid's strong demand during the 2022–2023 supply shortage pushed its used values even higher.
Toyota's 36-month/36,000-mile basic coverage is the segment minimum. Hyundai and Kia both offer 5 yr / 60,000 mi.
The headline powertrain term is the class minimum. The hybrid system has much longer coverage: 8 yr / 100,000 mi on hybrid components and 10 yr / 150,000 mi on the traction battery.
ToyotaCare covers factory-scheduled maintenance for 2 yr / 25,000 mi and includes 2 years of unlimited-mileage roadside assistance. The 2023 car's new multimedia system also comes with connected-services trials. That beats rivals like the CR-V that include no free scheduled maintenance, but it is a short plan.
$35,125 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (68% retained, or about $23,885) leaves about $11,240 in depreciation. Add the projected $5,500 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $16,740 in total.
6Reliability & QualityOne of the RAV4's strongest categories.3.46B+
Consumer Reports rates the 2023 RAV4 Hybrid more reliable than the average same-year vehicle, with top marks for the hybrid powertrain, steering, suspension and brakes, but in-car electronics — the new 2023 multimedia system — is a below-average trouble spot. J.D. Power's owner-reported quality score of 76/100 ('Average') is a step down from the 2022 car, so the signals sit at the top of the mixed band rather than in the top tier.
Toyota has sat at or near the top of Consumer Reports' brand reliability rankings throughout this generation's life and stays in the upper tier of J.D. Power's Vehicle Dependability Study, with multiple segment awards each year.
The 2023 RAV4 Hybrid's recall record is light and entirely software/display related: the fleet-wide Panoramic View Monitor rear-camera software campaign and an instrument-panel startup-display software recall, both remedied by reflash. Nothing touches the hybrid powertrain; the Prime-only DC/DC converter recall does not apply, though the new 2023 multimedia unit drew owner complaints.
The volume hybrid pairs the 2.5L A25A-FXS Dynamic Force four with Toyota's planetary e-CVT and electric rear-axle AWD — a hybrid architecture with a long high-mileage record in RAV4, Camry and taxi-fleet service, and CR gives the 2023 hybrid powertrain top marks. The generation's known issue is salt-belt corrosion of the underbody high-voltage cable connector, a warranty item rather than a core-drivetrain failure.
The XA50 cabin is rugged with soft-touch dash inserts and chunky, durable switchgear; 2023 brought the larger 8- or 10.5-inch Toyota Audio Multimedia screen and a digital cluster on upper trims, but reviewers still note hard plastics on doors and lower surfaces and a less upscale feel than the CX-5 or new CR-V.
Assembly consistency is a strong suit by the fifth year of the generation with few panel-gap complaints, but the J.D. Power owner-reported quality score slipped to 'Average' for 2023 and owners report scattered dash rattles, wind noise and new-infotainment glitches.
Toyota's roughly 1,500-store US dealer network is among the densest of any brand, and hybrid service is routine at every Toyota dealer given two decades of hybrid volume; service-satisfaction scores sit near the mass-market average.
As America's best-selling SUV, the RAV4 has abundant OEM, used and aftermarket parts, and RepairPal places its annual repair cost well under the compact-SUV average; hybrid-specific components are shared across Toyota's hybrid lineup.
7Technology & InfotainmentOne of the RAV4's weakest categories.2.05C
2023 brought the new Toyota Audio Multimedia system to the US RAV4: an 8-inch screen is standard on the volume Hybrid XLE and a 10.5-inch screen comes on upper grades.
The new 2023 Toyota Audio Multimedia system is a major step over the old Entune unit, with sharp modern graphics, a logical menu structure and retained physical climate controls; reviewers still noted Android Auto connection glitches and the lack of a quick home button.
Wireless Apple CarPlay and wireless Android Auto are standard on every 2023 RAV4 grade with both the 8- and 10.5-inch systems; some reviewers reported intermittent Android Auto drops.
The new 'Hey Toyota' Intelligent Assistant understands natural phrasing and Cloud Navigation uses Google POI data, but both run through the Drive Connect subscription after its trial, and there is no onboard map fallback on the 8-inch system.
The base six-speaker system is adequate; an 11-speaker JBL system with subwoofer and amp is optional on XLE Premium and standard-or-packaged on XSE/Limited, a modest premium upgrade for the class.
The volume Hybrid XLE uses analog gauges flanking a 7-inch digital information display; the full 12.3-inch digital cluster is standard only on Hybrid Limited, Hybrid XSE and Prime XSE.
The new 2023 multimedia system is over-the-air updatable, but OTA covers infotainment/navigation software only, not vehicle systems.
The Toyota app's Remote Connect covers remote start, climate, lock/unlock, guest driver and Digital Key on compatible phones, but it is a trial that turns into a paid subscription, and remote start via the fob also depends on it.
The Hybrid XLE gets five USB ports including two for rear passengers; Qi wireless charging is only on Limited or in Advanced Technology Packages, and the 120V outlet is limited to Woodland/Adventure/TRD (1,500W on Prime only).
Smart Key proximity entry on the front doors and liftgate with push-button start is standard from XLE up, and Digital Key is available through Remote Connect; the power liftgate needs XLE Premium and a hands-free kick liftgate is a Limited/XSE package item.
A backup camera, Blind Spot Monitor and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert are standard; front/rear Parking Assist with automatic braking and the 360-degree Panoramic View Monitor are confined to upper-trim packages.
For 2023 the 10-inch color HUD is listed only in the RAV4 Prime XSE Premium Package; it is not offered on any RAV4 Hybrid grade, so it is effectively absent for the scored hybrid configuration.
8Use-Case FitMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.41C+
Wide rear doors, 39.5 in of rear headroom and IIHS Good+ LATCH make car seats easy to install, and the 37.5 cu ft cargo area takes a stroller plus groceries; rear legroom trails the CR-V for rear-facing seats.
A 5-star NHTSA rating, IIHS Top Safety Pick, and Toyota Safety Sense 2.5 plus Blind Spot Monitor and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert standard on every hybrid grade put strong safety on the trims families buy.
Rear vents, rear USB ports, a reclining rear bench and decent luggage space suit medium trips, but the firm ride and droning engine wear on longer drives and there are no rear-seat entertainment features.
Electric-assisted launches, smooth engine stop/start and standard full-speed adaptive cruise make traffic easy, and Cars.com found it easily maneuvered in tight spaces; the firm ride and engine drone are the daily annoyances.
At 41 MPG city / 40 combined on regular fuel, the RAV4 Hybrid is among the cheapest compact SUVs to commute in, beating the CR-V and Sportage hybrids, and Toyota's maintenance costs are low.
A 180.9-in length and 36.1-ft turning circle make it easy to place in town, helped by good forward sightlines; thick rear pillars and the lack of a standard surround camera or sensors on the XLE cost some points.
The hybrid is rated to tow just 1,750 lbs with roughly 1,145 lbs of payload; the 69.8 cu ft cargo hold handles light tradesperson duty but it is not a work tool.
Toyota's hybrid system has a long durability record in taxi and fleet use and the XA50 platform is proven, but the RAV4 Hybrid is a unibody crossover with cloth/SofTex interiors, not built for hard work abuse.
Cargo tie-downs, roof rails on most grades and a dealer hitch are available, but the volume XLE Hybrid has no AC outlet and no work-focused upfit ecosystem; only the Woodland adds a 120V/100W outlet and cargo liner.
Roughly 580 miles per 14.5-gallon tank and standard adaptive cruise with Lane Tracing Assist make it an easy distance car, but the firm ride, road noise and engine drone under load limit long-haul comfort.
Standard electric AWD, about 8.1 in of ground clearance and roof rails make gravel roads and trailheads easy, and the new Hybrid Woodland Edition adds all-terrain tires and a 120V outlet; the 1,750-lb tow rating limits bigger toys.
A 60/40 fold-flat rear seat, a height-adjustable deck board with underfloor space, 69.8 cu ft maximum and available roof rails and hitch handle normal gear; there is no pass-through or 40/20/40 split.
9Driving ExperienceMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.30C+
The TNGA-K platform keeps it composed and secure in corners, and the rear-motor AWD helps traction, but the firm suspension does not translate into real agility — it is competent rather than engaging.
The 14.3:1 electric rack is reasonably quick with a firm, direct weighting that Cars.com called communicative, though most testers still find little real feedback.
The electronically controlled regenerative brakes have a firmer pedal than conventional brakes but remain linear and predictable; stopping distances of about 125–130 ft from 60 mph are mid-pack.
The 219-hp hybrid is surprisingly brisk with strong passing power and seamless engine stop/start, but the eCVT lets revs flare ahead of road speed under hard throttle.
Silent in EV creep, but the Atkinson 2.5L sounds gruff and drones almost constantly once it is working, which reviewers singled out as the car's main flaw.
A 36.1-ft turning circle on the volume Hybrid XLE is tight for a compact SUV and helps in parking lots.
An upright seating position, good forward sightlines and the chunky physical climate knobs kept with the new 2023 multimedia system make it easy to live with; the XLE's manual seat and limited legroom for tall drivers keep it mid-band.
Brisk acceleration and composed cornering make it pleasant, but the droning engine and firm, uninvolving chassis mean it is transportation rather than entertainment.
10Value & Market PositionGrades above the middle of the scale.2.72B-
Every RAV4 Hybrid has standard AWD, Toyota Safety Sense 2.5 and, for 2023, the new 8-inch Toyota Audio Multimedia screen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The LE is still plain: it has cloth seats, no power driver's seat and only a basic driver display.
About $31k–$35k buys a 219-hp hybrid with AWD, around 40 MPG and the class's best resale value, which is strong value for the money. The weaknesses are a noisy powertrain and plain interior materials, and the CR-V Hybrid and Escape Hybrid are close on price.
The hybrid comes in seven trims, from LE to XSE, Limited and the new Woodland Edition, spread evenly between about $31k and $39k+. Beyond that, buyers can choose the gas RAV4 (FWD or AWD, including TRD Off-Road) or the RAV4 Prime plug-in hybrid.
The RAV4 was America's best-selling SUV in 2023 and the best-selling vehicle that isn't a pickup. Hybrids made up a large and growing share of those sales, and demand outran supply.
Toyota has the strongest reputation among mainstream brands for reliability and resale value, and it led the hybrid market at a time when buyers were looking for efficiency. That reputation keeps owners loyal and keeps used prices high.
During the 2023 model year, RAV4 Hybrids were in short supply. Waitlists and dealer markups were common, and factory incentives were mostly limited to occasional subsidized APR offers. Buyers had very little room to negotiate.
2023 is the fifth model year of the XA50 generation that launched for 2019. Its only update was the new multimedia system and digital cluster, and the platform aged against the redesigned 2023 CR-V. A sixth generation arrived for 2026.
Critics praised it for efficiency, AWD and resale value but criticized the coarse engine noise and ride quality. In 2023 comparisons it usually ranked behind the redesigned CR-V Hybrid and the Mazda CX-50.
