The verdict
A mixed-report compact suv, strong on efficiency and held back by performance.
The 2021 RAV4 Hybrid is the sensible, buy-it-and-forget-it compact SUV: 40 MPG combined, standard all-wheel drive, Toyota's proven hybrid hardware, and resale value that keeps roughly 70% of its price after five years. It's safe and cheap to own, but it isn't quick to tow with or quiet when pushed, its 7-inch screen and analog gauges already look old, and the factory warranty is the shortest in the class. Buy it for the low running costs and dependability rather than the cabin tech or the drive.

Detailed scoring by subject
1Performance & PowertrainThe RAV4's lowest-graded category.0.69F
2021 is a carry-over year of the fifth-generation (XA50, 2019–) RAV4; the hybrid uses the 2.5L A25A-FXS four plus three electric motors for 219 hp combined on every hybrid trim. The RAV4 Prime PHEV (302 hp) joined the lineup for 2021.
Toyota rates only the hybrid's engine torque (163 lb-ft); electric-motor torque fills in low-speed response, so on-road shove feels stronger than this number suggests.
Instrumented results for the 2019–2021 RAV4 Hybrid cluster around 7.4–7.8 s — quicker than the gas RAV4 and most compact SUVs, but unremarkable against the wider SUV field.
Electric assist gives brisk, immediate low-speed response and engine stop/start transitions are seamless, but the four-cylinder turns coarse and noisy when pushed hard on highway merges — a common reviewer complaint.
The hybrid's planetary eCVT is smooth and never hunts, but holds high revs under hard acceleration, producing the typical CVT drone; the gas model's 8-speed automatic is generally smooth with occasional hesitant downshifts.
The scored hybrid is rated for 1,750 lbs — light-duty only. The gas Adventure/TRD Off-Road reach 3,500 lbs, but those are not the scored configuration.
Every 2021 RAV4 Hybrid has standard electric AWD-i (independent rear motor), and the Prime is AWD-only; gas Adventure/TRD Off-Road/Limited add Dynamic Torque Vectoring AWD with rear driveline disconnect and Multi-Terrain Select. No low range, as expected for the class.
Hybrid offers 8.1 in of clearance and a Trail mode — fine for dirt roads and light trails. The gas TRD Off-Road (8.6 in, all-terrain tires, tuned suspension) gives the lineup modest genuine off-road credibility, but there are no lockers or skid-plate armor.
For 2021 the RAV4 covers gas (203 hp, FWD/AWD), hybrid (219 hp AWD) and the newly launched RAV4 Prime PHEV (302 hp, 42 mi EV range) — one of the broadest electrified lineups in the compact SUV class. No full EV.
2Efficiency & RangeThe RAV4's best-graded category.4.00A+
Every 2021 RAV4 Hybrid trim carries the same EPA rating of 40 MPG combined with standard AWD-i.
EPA city rating for the 2021 RAV4 Hybrid AWD.
EPA highway rating for the 2021 RAV4 Hybrid AWD.
Computed from the EPA combined rating and Toyota's 14.5-gallon hybrid fuel tank; EPA does not publish a range figure for conventional hybrids.
EPA's published annual fuel cost for the 2021 RAV4 Hybrid AWD at its current price assumptions.
Runs on regular 87-octane unleaded; a self-charging hybrid with no plug-in or premium-fuel requirement, so it is as cheap and flexible to fuel as a compact SUV gets.
3SafetyOne of the RAV4's strongest categories.3.06B
The 2021 RAV4 (XA50, carry-over year before the MY2022 refresh) carries NHTSA's 5-star overall rating, consistent across the generation including the hybrid.
Earned a 2021 Top Safety Pick (not TSP+) only with specific headlights; Good in small-overlap (both sides), original moderate overlap and roof strength. Later updated tests expose weaker results: Acceptable updated side and Marginal updated moderate overlap (rear passenger).
Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard on every RAV4 Hybrid: pre-collision with pedestrian/cyclist detection, full-speed dynamic radar cruise, lane departure alert with steering assist, Lane Tracing Assist, auto high beams and road sign assist; BSM with RCTA is standard on all hybrid trims including the volume LE.
IIHS rated vehicle-to-vehicle and daytime pedestrian front crash prevention Superior, avoiding the pedestrian target at 12 mph; TSS 2.0 adds low-light pedestrian and daytime cyclist detection, though no nighttime pedestrian rating was published for this year.
BSM and RCTA are standard on the hybrid but alert-only; Rear Cross-Traffic Braking is limited to upper trims via the parking assist package and there is no safe-exit alert.
Lane Tracing Assist provides centering paired with radar cruise, but reviewers of the TSS 2.0 era note it needs clear markings, can ping-pong and hands back control readily on curves.
Full-speed-range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control with stop-and-go is standard and combines with LTA, though reviewers cite somewhat abrupt braking and slow resume relative to newer systems.
No hands-free driving option is offered on the 2021 RAV4; Lane Tracing Assist requires hands on the wheel.
Only the Hybrid Limited's adaptive LED projectors rate Good; the LED reflector headlights on volume trims like the Hybrid LE/XLE rate Marginal to Poor, though auto high beams are standard.
Upright greenhouse and a tall seating position give decent forward sightlines, but the thick rear pillars and small rear window limit rearward view; a 360-degree camera is only available on top trims.
IIHS gives the LATCH hardware its top Good+ ease-of-use rating, with full anchors in two outboard positions and a borrowable center position; rear doors open wide and the rear seat is roomy for the class.
4Space & ComfortOne of the RAV4's weakest categories.1.13D
The fifth-generation (XA50) RAV4 is a strictly two-row compact SUV; every 2021 grade seats five with no third-row option.
The volume XLE Hybrid comes without a moonroof unless the Convenience Package is added, so it gets the full ~39.5 in; moonroof-equipped trims drop to 37.7 in, which is tight for tall drivers.
Front legroom of 41.0 in is adequate but at the low end of the compact-SUV band; tall drivers report the seat track running out sooner than in a CR-V.
The RAV4's boxy roofline gives 39.5 in of second-row headroom, unaffected by the front moonroof — near the top of the compact-SUV band.
37.8 in of rear legroom fits adults comfortably behind average-height drivers, though the CR-V (40.4 in) is roomier.
No third row is offered on any 2021 RAV4; it is a five-seat, two-row SUV.
37.5 cu ft behind the rear seat is competitive among compact SUVs (CR-V 39.2, Rogue 36.5) but scores low against a fleet-wide SUV band that includes three-row models.
69.8 cu ft with the second row folded is about average for the compact class, with a nearly flat load floor and 40-in cargo length.
A useful dash-width rubberized shelf, decent console bin and door pockets, a two-level reversible cargo floor on some grades and five USB ports make everyday storage good, though there is no standout feature beyond the Adventure/TRD's 120V outlet (not on the hybrid).
Front seats are supportive and the XLE adds an 8-way driver's seat with lumbar, but reviewers note firm, somewhat flat cushions on longer drives; the rear bench reclines and is comfortable for two adults.
The ride is composed on smooth highway but firmer and busier than the CR-V or Escape over broken pavement, with some impacts transmitted into the cabin.
Road and wind noise are noticeable at highway speed, and the hybrid's four-cylinder drones loudly when pushed; quieter than the gas RAV4 at low speed thanks to EV creep, but below the class's quietest.
Dual-zone climate with rear vents is standard on the hybrid, but heated seats and wheel are a Weather Package option on the volume XLE Hybrid; ventilated front and heated rear seats are reserved for Limited/Adventure packages.
5Cost of OwnershipGrades above the middle of the scale.2.94B-
The cheapest way into the scored hybrid class in 2021 was the LE Hybrid, with AWD-i standard on every hybrid trim. Toyota raised the price mid-year, so the entry figure depends on build date.
The XLE Hybrid was the volume hybrid trim. It sat about $1,300 above the LE and added dual-zone climate, keyless entry and alloy wheels; the new XLE Premium Hybrid ($32,500) sat above it.
Estimates vary a lot: Edmunds' True Cost to Own for the 2021 RAV4 Hybrid adds up to about $8,860, while CarEdge and dealer analyses put RAV4 Hybrid maintenance at $4,000–$6,000. The ~$6,000 used here is a blend of the two, and ToyotaCare covers the first two years of scheduled service.
The RAV4 Hybrid holds its value better than any other compact SUV. iSeeCars puts its 5-year depreciation at about 25%, against roughly 40% for the class. Edmunds' original 5-year projection was more cautious, at about $10,655 lost on the LE, so this score uses a figure between the two.
Toyota's 36-month/36,000-mile basic warranty is the shortest in the segment; Hyundai and Kia offer 5 yr / 60,000 mi.
The headline powertrain warranty is the class minimum, 5 yr / 60,000 mi. The hybrid hardware gets longer cover: 8 yr / 100,000 mi on hybrid components and 10 yr / 150,000 mi on the battery, which transfers to later owners.
ToyotaCare covers 2 years / 25,000 miles of scheduled maintenance plus 2 years of roadside assistance. That beats the CR-V and Escape, which include no free scheduled maintenance, but falls short of multi-year plans. Connected-service trials were limited on 2021 models.
$31,400 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (70% retained, or about $21,980) leaves about $9,420 in depreciation. Add the projected $6,000 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $15,420 in total.
6Reliability & QualityOne of the RAV4's strongest categories.3.41B+
The 2021 RAV4 Hybrid is a third-year XA50 carry-over and the early teething problems of the 2019 launch were mostly resolved; Consumer Reports rates it more reliable than the average 2021 vehicle and J.D. Power rates it 'Great'. Owner-reported 12V battery drain and the hybrid fuel-tank fill issue keep it short of the very top of the band.
Around the 2021 model year Toyota sat in the top handful of brands in both Consumer Reports' brand reliability rankings and J.D. Power's Vehicle Dependability Study, a standing it has held consistently for years.
Only two NHTSA campaigns cover the 2021 RAV4 Hybrid, both fixable without parts drama for most owners, but the occupant-classification-sensor recall concerns passenger airbag deployment, and the well-documented hybrid fuel-tank under-fill defect needed a tank and sender replacement program and an extended warranty.
The volume hybrid's 2.5L A25A-FXS Atkinson four and Toyota's planetary e-CVT hybrid transaxle are among the most proven powertrains in the market, with a long high-mileage record across RAV4, Camry and Lexus hybrids and no systemic engine, transaxle or traction-battery failures for this model year.
The XA50 cabin is sturdy and pleasantly chunky with rubberized knobs and soft-touch dash inserts on mid trims, but reviewers consistently note plenty of hard plastic and say it trails the Mazda CX-5 and Honda CR-V for perceived quality.
By the third model year of the generation, assembly quality at Toyota's Kentucky, Ontario and Japanese plants was consistent, with owner complaints concentrated on electrical accessories (wireless charging pad, 12V battery) and the fuel-tank defect rather than panel gaps or rattles.
Toyota has one of the densest dealer networks in the US (roughly 1,200+ stores), and hybrid service is routine at every one of them; service satisfaction is around the mass-market average.
As the best-selling SUV in America, the RAV4 has abundant OEM, used and aftermarket parts and repair costs below the compact SUV average; hybrid-specific components are well supported and under long warranties.
7Technology & InfotainmentOne of the RAV4's weakest categories.0.71F
The volume XLE Hybrid ships with a 7-in touchscreen; the 8-in unit is an Audio Plus option or standard on higher grades — small by later standards.
The Entune 3.0-based system has physical knobs and shortcut buttons that help, but reviewers fault its slow responses, dated graphics and clumsy menus; most owners default to phone projection.
Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard on every 2021 grade but wired only; wireless projection was not offered until the 2023 refresh of the head unit.
The volume trim has no embedded navigation (Dynamic Navigation only with Premium Audio on top grades), and Toyota's voice recognition is basic command-style; owners rely on Siri/Google via projection.
The six-speaker base system is merely adequate; an 11-speaker JBL system with subwoofer is available on XLE Premium and up, a decent but not class-leading upgrade.
The XLE Hybrid uses analog gauges with a 4.2-in multi-information display; a 7-in digital MID between gauges is limited to XSE/Limited/Adventure and Prime — no full-digital cluster in 2021.
The 2021 head unit has no meaningful over-the-air updates; software and map updates require a dealer or USB, and Dynamic Navigation map data is cloud-pulled only on top trims.
Remote Connect (remote start, lock/unlock, vehicle status) works through the Toyota app but needs the Audio Plus package on the XLE Hybrid and is a paid subscription after a 1-year trial; no digital key.
Five USB-A ports (one media, four charge, including rear) cover all occupants, but there is no USB-C, wireless charging is a top-trim package item, and the 120V outlet is limited to Adventure/TRD gas grades.
The XLE Hybrid gets Smart Key proximity entry on front doors and liftgate with push-button start; app-based remote start needs Remote Connect, and the hands-free kick liftgate is a Limited option. No phone-as-key.
A backup camera and Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert are standard on the XLE Hybrid, but front/rear parking sensors with auto braking and the Bird's Eye 360 camera are confined to upper-trim packages.
In 2021 the 10-in. color head-up display is offered only on the RAV4 Prime XSE Premium Package; no RAV4 Hybrid grade, including the volume XLE Hybrid and the Limited Hybrid, can be ordered with one.
8Use-Case FitMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.33C+
Wide-opening rear doors, a tall roof (39.5 in rear headroom) and a 37.5 cu ft cargo hold that swallows a stroller make family duty easy, though 37.8 in of rear legroom tightens up behind rear-facing seats versus a CR-V.
Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 (AEB with pedestrian/cyclist detection, full-speed adaptive cruise, Lane Tracing Assist) is standard on every grade and BSM/RCTA is standard from XLE; the 2021 RAV4 earned a 5-star NHTSA overall rating and IIHS Top Safety Pick.
Rear-seat vents (standard on the hybrid), a reclining rear bench, rear USB ports and roomy cargo make for comfortable trips for four, but road noise and a firm ride wear on long drives and rear heated seats are top-trim only.
The hybrid moves off on electric torque, creeps silently in traffic and has full-speed adaptive cruise with stop-and-go standard, making it a relaxed commuter; the firm ride and engine drone under hard throttle are the main annoyances.
40 mpg combined with standard AWD on regular gas puts the RAV4 Hybrid among the cheapest non-plug-in compact SUVs to commute in, backed by low Toyota maintenance costs.
A compact 180.9-in footprint and 36.1-ft turning circle make it easy in town, and the backup camera plus BSM/RCTA are standard on the XLE; parking sensors and 360 camera are upper-trim extras, and thick rear pillars limit over-shoulder vision.
With a 1,750-lb tow rating and roughly 1,200 lb of payload, the RAV4 Hybrid handles small utility trailers and home-improvement runs but is not a work vehicle.
Toyota's hybrid system is proven in high-mileage taxi and fleet use, and the RAV4 has an above-average reliability record, though unibody construction and cloth/SofTex interiors aren't built for abuse.
Cargo tie-downs, a durable cargo area and roof rails cover light duty, but the hybrid has no 120V outlet (Adventure/Prime only) and there is no meaningful commercial upfit ecosystem.
About 580 miles of range from a 14.5-gal tank at 40 mpg and standard Lane Tracing Assist with full-speed adaptive cruise make it a strong mile-eater; highway noise and firm seats/ride keep it short of the best tourers.
Standard electric AWD-i with Trail Mode and 8.1 in of ground clearance handle gravel and snowy trailheads well, but the hybrid lacks the gas Adventure/TRD's torque-vectoring AWD, outlet and higher tow rating.
A 60/40 fold-flat rear seat opens a 69.8 cu ft, near-flat load floor and roof rails are standard, though there is no pass-through and the 1,750-lb hitch rating limits towed toys.
9Driving ExperienceMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.18C
The TNGA-K platform gives the fifth-generation RAV4 secure, tidy handling with modest body roll, but the hybrid's added weight and comfort-biased tires make it competent rather than engaging — behind the Mazda CX-5.
Steering is accurate with reasonable weighting, but transmits little feedback — typical numb compact-crossover tuning.
Stopping distances are competitive for the class and regen-to-friction blending is mostly seamless, though the pedal feels a bit soft and nonlinear at the top of travel.
Electric assist delivers quick, smooth tip-in and the engine starts/stops almost imperceptibly; the eCVT never shifts or shudders, but holds high revs under full throttle.
Silent in EV creep, but the 2.5L four becomes loud and buzzy when merging or climbing, a consistent reviewer complaint for this generation.
A 36.1-ft turning circle is tight for a compact SUV and makes U-turns and parking-lot maneuvers easy.
A commanding, upright position with large, glove-friendly climate knobs and good forward sightlines; the volume XLE has only a manual-adjust (8-way) driver's seat, and moonroof-equipped cars lose front headroom.
Brisk for a hybrid compact SUV (~7.5 s 0–60) but the drone and numb steering make it an efficient appliance more than a car enthusiasts seek out.
10Value & Market PositionGrades above the middle of the scale.3.02B
Every 2021 hybrid trim came with AWD-i, Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 (adaptive cruise, lane tracing, pre-collision with pedestrian detection), an 8-in touchscreen with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto and LED headlights. Blind-spot monitoring was missing on the LE Hybrid, and power seats and a power liftgate needed higher trims.
The hybrid costs only about $1,000–$1,500 more than the gas version but brings 219 hp, standard AWD and 40 MPG combined, which made it the class's best value at around $31k. Most rivals had no hybrid in 2021, and the CR-V Hybrid cost more and returned 38 MPG.
There were five hybrid trims (LE, XLE, the new XLE Premium, XSE, Limited), spread evenly from about $30k to $38.6k. The wider lineup also offered gas FWD/AWD (including Adventure and TRD Off-Road) and the RAV4 Prime plug-in hybrid, so there was a version for nearly every budget.
In 2021 the RAV4 was America's best-selling SUV and the best-selling non-pickup vehicle, with more than 400,000 US sales. The hybrid was a growing share of that total and was in short supply at dealers.
Toyota's name for reliability and strong resale, together with its long lead in hybrids, gave the RAV4 Hybrid a loyal mainstream following. It is not an aspirational luxury brand.
Through most of the 2021 model year, the chip shortage and strong hybrid demand meant the RAV4 Hybrid sold at or above MSRP, often with dealer markups and long waitlists. Discounts or cash-back offers were rare.
2021 was the third year of the fifth-generation (XA50) RAV4, which launched for 2019 on the TNGA-K platform. A facelift followed for 2022 (new headlights, USB-C, and later a new infotainment system), so a 2021 buyer got the older 8-in Entune 3.0 system.
Reviewers broadly praised the hybrid's efficiency, standard AWD and quick acceleration. They criticized the noisy engine under load and the stiff-feeling ride, and the CR-V usually beat it in comparison tests. It won a KBB Best Buy and was a Consumer Reports recommended pick, but it was not a 10Best winner.
