The verdict
A mixed-report compact suv, strong on efficiency and held back by performance.
The 2024 RAV4 Hybrid is a safe, sensible pick in the compact-SUV class. It comes with standard AWD, returns 39 MPG combined, and has some of the best reliability and resale value in the segment. The trade-offs are the noise its engine makes when you push it, a firm ride, short factory warranties, and a design in its late years, with the all-new 2026 model now on sale. If you plan to keep a car for years and want low running costs, few compact SUVs are a safer bet.

Detailed scoring by subject
1Performance & PowertrainThe RAV4's lowest-graded category.1.03D
Every 2024 RAV4 Hybrid trim uses the same 2.5L Atkinson four plus two front motors and a rear e-AWD motor for 219 net hp. The 2024 model year is a carry-over year of the fifth-generation XA50 (2019–2025), unchanged since the 2022 facelift.
Toyota publishes no single net combined torque for the hybrid; 163 lb-ft is the engine's rated peak, used for consistency with the rest of the RAV4 history. Some third-party sites quote 252 lb-ft combined, but that figure is not Toyota's.
Instrumented tests of the XA50 RAV4 Hybrid (unchanged powertrain 2019–2024) cluster between 7.1 and 7.8 s depending on outlet and trim; 7.5 s is the midpoint. Brisk for a non-turbo compact SUV.
Smooth, quiet EV-to-engine transitions around town and good low-speed response from the motors, but the 2.5L becomes loud and coarse under hard acceleration — a well-documented XA50 trait that the 2026 redesign only partly addressed.
The planetary eCVT never hunts and is seamless in normal driving, with simulated steps in Sport mode; it still produces rubber-band revs and drone when floored.
The item asks for the nameplate's max in any configuration, which is 3,500 lbs on the gas Adventure and TRD Off-Road. The scored hybrid is limited to 1,750 lbs, which is modest for the segment.
Electronic on-demand AWD (E-Four) is standard on every 2024 RAV4 Hybrid trim, and on the Prime. The gas RAV4 offers Dynamic Torque Vectoring AWD with rear driveline disconnect on Adventure/TRD Off-Road. Multi-Terrain Select and Trail Mode are available, but there is no low range.
About 8.1–8.6 inches of ground clearance, Trail Mode and the hybrid Woodland Edition's all-terrain tires make it capable on gravel and in light snow. The gas TRD Off-Road adds tuned suspension and AT tires. There are no lockers, low range or real skid plates, so it is still a light-duty crossover.
For 2024 the RAV4 offers three distinct powertrains: a 203-hp gas four with an 8-speed automatic (FWD/AWD), a 219-hp AWD hybrid and a 302-hp RAV4 Prime PHEV with 42 miles of electric range. That is one of the broadest lineups in the compact class, though there is no EV.
2Efficiency & RangeThe RAV4's best-graded category.4.00A+
This is the EPA rating that covers every mainstream 2024 hybrid trim, all of which are AWD. Figures are unchanged from 2023.
EPA city rating for the volume hybrid configuration.
EPA highway rating for the volume hybrid configuration.
This is EPA's published total range for the volume hybrid. It is long-legged for a compact SUV.
This is EPA's annual fuel-cost estimate for the volume hybrid at current standard assumptions. It is about $550–$700 a year less than the gas RAV4.
Runs on regular 87-octane unleaded across the whole lineup, with no premium requirement and no charging needed for the hybrid. It is as cheap and flexible to fuel as a compact SUV gets.
3SafetyOne of the RAV4's strongest categories.3.07B
NHTSA rated the 2024 RAV4 Hybrid AWD 5 stars overall, with a 5-star side rating offsetting 4-star frontal and rollover scores.
The 2024 RAV4 earned a Top Safety Pick (not TSP+) with Good small-overlap results on both sides and Good in the original moderate overlap test. It missed the plus because the updated moderate overlap test, which checks the rear passenger, came back Marginal, and the updated side test was only Acceptable.
Toyota Safety Sense 2.5 is standard on every 2024 RAV4. It includes AEB with low-light pedestrian and daytime cyclist detection, full-speed-range adaptive cruise with curve speed management, Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist, Lane Tracing Assist, Automatic High Beams, and Left Turn Intersection Support. On the hybrid lineup, Blind Spot Monitor with RCTA is standard from the LE up. On the gas lineup it is only added from the XLE.
In IIHS's tougher vehicle-to-vehicle 2.0 test the RAV4 was only Acceptable. Its pedestrian AEB rated Good: it avoided the 12 mph daytime target and cut speed by 21 mph at 25 mph, and it avoided the night scenarios with both high and low beams.
Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert is standard across the hybrid trims but alert-only. Rear cross-traffic braking (Parking Support Brake) and safe-exit warnings are limited to upper trims or absent, and there is no trailer-aware blind-spot coverage.
Lane Tracing Assist and Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist (with road-edge recognition) are standard. Reviewers find TSS 2.5 centering functional but more prone to wander and ping-pong than Honda's or Hyundai's latest systems.
Standard full-speed-range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control with stop-and-go and curve speed management, combined with LTA, gives capable single-lane highway assist. Its rough edges are somewhat abrupt braking and a slow resume, and it has no assisted lane change.
No hands-free driving system is offered on any 2024 RAV4. DRCC and LTA both require the driver's hands on the wheel.
IIHS rates the headlights Good on every 2024 RAV4 trim. LED projector low and high beams are standard following the 2022 refresh, and high-beam assist is included, but there is no curve-adaptive lighting.
The boxy fifth-generation body gives an upright greenhouse and good forward sightlines, but the thick C-pillars limit the rear three-quarter view. A backup camera is standard, and a 360-degree Panoramic View Monitor is available only on upper trims.
IIHS rates LATCH ease of use Good+. There are two full LATCH positions, and the center seat has a tether anchor and can borrow lower anchors. The rear doors open reasonably wide and rear legroom is roomy for the class.
4Space & ComfortOne of the RAV4's weakest categories.1.16D
The XA50 RAV4 Hybrid is a two-row, five-seat compact SUV in every trim.
The volume Hybrid XLE does not carry a moonroof as standard, so the no-moonroof figure is used; the moonroof trims lose almost two inches.
Front legroom is adequate but on the short side of the compact-SUV class.
The boxy roofline gives the second row generous headroom for the class.
Rear legroom is competitive with most of the class, though it trails the CR-V's 41.0 in.
There is no third row in any 2024 RAV4 configuration.
The hybrid battery sits under the rear seat, so cargo space matches the gas RAV4. That is good for a compact SUV, but the band spans much larger SUVs.
Maximum cargo is near the top of the compact class, but modest against the full SUV band.
The dash has a long rubberized shelf ahead of the passenger, plus a deep console bin, large door pockets and a two-level cargo floor (reversible deck board on some trims). There is no standout feature such as onboard AC power on the hybrid.
The front seats are supportive for most drivers. Reviewers note the lower trims' fabric seats are firm and lack lumbar adjustment, and the rear bench is comfortable but flat.
The ride is composed, but reviewers consistently describe it as firmer and busier over broken pavement than the CR-V or CX-50.
Road and wind noise are average for the class. The 2.5L engine drones loudly under hard acceleration through the eCVT, which reviewers flag as a key weakness.
Dual-zone climate and rear vents are standard. Heated front seats arrive at mid trims, and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats and a heated wheel are reserved for the Limited (some via package). Remote climate start comes through a Remote Connect subscription.
5Cost of OwnershipGrades above the middle of the scale.2.72B-
The 2024 range still opens with the gas-only LE FWD at $28,675 plus destination. 2024 is a carry-over year late in the fifth-generation (XA50) run, so the entry price moved only slightly from 2023.
This scorecard describes the hybrid. The XLE Premium is the core volume trim of the hybrid lineup, and every 2024 RAV4 Hybrid has standard AWD, so the representative price is just under $37,500.
Published estimates are far apart. Edmunds' 2024 RAV4 Hybrid XLE projection is high at about $8,000, while CarEdge's RAV4 data comes to about $3,900. A blended ~$5,900 is used; ToyotaCare covers the first 2 years of scheduled service either way.
The RAV4 Hybrid is one of the best value-holders in the compact-SUV class. KBB data shows only ~9% lost over the first two years, and Edmunds' projection implies about 73% retained at five years, so a slightly conservative 70% is used.
Toyota's 36-month/36,000-mile basic coverage is the segment floor. Hyundai and Kia offer 5 years / 60,000 miles.
The headline powertrain term is the class-minimum 5 years / 60,000 miles. The hybrid hardware is covered much longer, including 10 years / 150,000 miles on the traction battery.
ToyotaCare covers factory-scheduled maintenance for 2 years / 25,000 miles and includes 2 years of unlimited-mileage roadside assistance, along with connected-services trials. That beats the CR-V and Rogue, which include no free maintenance, but it is a short plan.
$37,475 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (70% retained, or about $26,233) leaves about $11,243 in depreciation. Add the projected $5,900 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $17,143 in total.
6Reliability & QualityOne of the RAV4's strongest categories.3.48B+
The 2024 RAV4 Hybrid is a carry-over year late in the fifth (XA50) generation. Consumer Reports rates it more reliable than the average same-year vehicle, but its predicted-reliability score and J.D. Power's owner-reported quality rating are a step below the 2021–2022 cars. That still puts it well above the compact-SUV median, just short of the top band.
Toyota has sat at or near the top of Consumer Reports' brand reliability rankings throughout this generation's life. It also stays in the upper tier of J.D. Power's Vehicle Dependability Study, with several segment awards every year.
The campaigns covering the 2024 RAV4 Hybrid are software fixes or compliance fixes, and none is a powertrain or fire defect. The broadest is an instrument-panel software fix at startup. The one mechanical recall, for loose front caliper and hub bolts, covered only 70 vehicles.
The volume hybrid pairs the 2.5L A25A-FXS four with Toyota's planetary e-CVT and an electric rear axle (AWD-e). Toyota has used this hybrid architecture since 2019, and it has a long high-mileage record in RAV4, Camry and Prius fleet service. The known corrosion problem with the underbody high-voltage cable centred on 2019–2022 salt-belt cars, so it is a smaller concern for 2024.
From MY2023 the cabin added Toyota's newer 8-inch (optionally 10.5-inch) multimedia screen and a digital gauge cluster on upper trims, which makes it feel more current. The materials themselves did not change: there are soft dash inserts and chunky, durable switchgear, but plenty of hard plastic on the doors and lower panels, and reviewers rank it behind the CR-V and CX-5.
By the sixth year of the generation, assembly is consistent and there are few complaints about panel gaps. Scattered owner reports of dash rattles and wind noise keep it out of the top band.
Toyota's US network of about 1,500 dealers is among the densest of any brand. After two decades of hybrid volume, every Toyota dealer services hybrids routinely. Service-satisfaction scores sit near the mass-market average.
The RAV4 is America's best-selling SUV, so OEM, used and aftermarket parts are abundant. RepairPal puts its annual repair cost well under the compact-SUV average, and the hybrid components are shared with Toyota's wider hybrid lineup.
7Technology & InfotainmentOne of the RAV4's weakest categories.2.17C
The volume XLE gets the 8-inch Toyota Audio Multimedia screen. The 10.5-inch unit is limited to upper trims.
The Toyota Audio Multimedia system (2023 update) is far quicker and cleaner than the old Entune unit, and keeps physical climate and volume knobs. The 8-inch screen is small, and the menus remain fairly basic.
Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard on every 2024 RAV4 Hybrid trim.
The 'Hey Toyota' natural-language assistant and cloud-based Drive Connect navigation are capable, but both require a subscription after the trial, so most owners default to phone projection.
The six-speaker base system is ordinary. An 11-speaker JBL system is available on the XSE and Limited and is a decent but unremarkable upgrade.
Lower trims use analog dials around a 7-inch multi-information display. The 12.3-inch fully digital cluster comes on the XLE Premium, XSE and Limited.
Toyota Audio Multimedia receives over-the-air updates to the head unit and maps. There are no whole-vehicle OTA updates that add features.
The Toyota app offers remote start/climate, lock, unlock and vehicle locate, but remote functions sit behind the Remote Connect subscription after a trial. Digital Key is limited to top trims.
USB-C ports are fitted front and rear (added with the 2022 facelift), and Qi wireless charging comes from the XLE Premium up. The hybrid has no household AC outlet.
Smart Key proximity entry with push-button start is standard on the hybrids. Remote start works through the app subscription, and a hands-free power liftgate and Digital Key are reserved for upper trims.
A backup camera is standard. Front and rear parking sensors and the Panoramic View Monitor arrive only on the XSE and Limited (via package), so the volume XLE has the camera alone.
A color head-up display is offered only on the Limited, as part of an option package.
8Use-Case FitMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.42C+
Wide-opening rear doors, a tall roof and 37.8 in of rear legroom make car-seat loading easy. IIHS rates the LATCH hardware Good+, and the cargo bay swallows a stroller. Rear legroom trails the CR-V for rear-facing seats.
The 2024 RAV4 earned an IIHS Top Safety Pick and a 5-star NHTSA overall rating. TSS 2.5 is standard, and blind-spot monitoring is standard on every hybrid. It rated only Marginal in the updated moderate-overlap rear-occupant test.
Rear vents, rear USB-C ports, good rear headroom and a large cargo bay suit a family of four. A firm ride and engine drone on grades cut into long-trip comfort.
The hybrid's EV creep, smooth eCVT and standard full-speed adaptive cruise make it easy in traffic, and the outward view is good. A firm ride and noisy full-throttle merges are the small annoyances.
39 MPG combined, regular fuel and Toyota's low maintenance costs (ToyotaCare included) make the RAV4 Hybrid one of the cheapest compact SUVs to commute in.
The compact 180.9-inch footprint and 36-ft turning circle make it easy to park. The volume XLE has only a rear camera, with sensors and 360 view reserved for upper trims.
A 1,750-lb tow rating and a car-like cargo bay cover light hauling only, so this is not a work vehicle.
The Toyota hybrid system has a strong long-term durability record, including heavy use as a taxi in the RAV4/Camry family. The interior is consumer-grade, though hard-wearing.
It offers cargo tie-down hooks, roof rails on most trims and a dealer hitch, but no onboard AC power on the hybrid and no upfit ecosystem.
An EPA 566-mile range and standard adaptive cruise with lane tracing reduce stops and fatigue. A firm ride and average cabin noise keep it short of a top tourer.
Electric AWD is standard on all hybrids, with 8.1 in of ground clearance and a Trail mode. The Woodland Edition adds all-terrain tires and roof-rack crossbars, so gravel and forest roads pose no problem.
The 60/40 split rear seats fold nearly flat to a 69.8 cu ft maximum, joined by roof rails, a two-level cargo floor and a 1,750-lb hitch for bike racks. The rear seat neither slides nor reclines far.
9Driving ExperienceMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.28C
The TNGA-K platform keeps the RAV4 Hybrid secure and predictable with modest body roll. It feels heavier and less eager than the CX-50 or Escape.
The steering is accurate and reasonably weighted but numb, with little feedback.
Regen-to-friction blending is well sorted for a hybrid and stopping distances are class-average, though some testers find the pedal a little soft.
Engine stop/start and EV-to-gas transitions are seamless, and the 219-hp system feels quick for the class. The eCVT flares engine revs under hard throttle.
It is quiet in EV mode and cruising, but the four-cylinder drones coarsely under load, a frequently cited complaint.
The turning circle is tight and typical of compact SUVs.
A tall, upright driving position gives a good forward view, and large rubberized climate knobs make the controls easy to use. Some drivers report a long reach to the screen's far side and thick rear pillars.
It is a competent, quick-enough appliance with little character; reviewers call it 'boring by design'.
10Value & Market PositionGrades above the middle of the scale.2.88B-
Every 2024 RAV4 Hybrid comes with standard AWD, Toyota Safety Sense 2.5, and wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto. But the LE has only an 8-inch screen and cloth seats, and the power liftgate and SofTex seats require the XLE Premium, while CR-V and Tucson hybrids include more equipment at similar prices.
For about $33,000–$37,500 the hybrid delivers 219 hp, standard AWD, 39 MPG combined and class-best resale value, which works out to strong value over the ownership period. The cabin's plainness and road noise hold it back from being a clear bargain.
The 2024 range is unusually wide: gas LE through Adventure and TRD Off-Road, seven hybrid trims from LE through Woodland, SE, XSE and Limited, and the RAV4 Prime plug-in. Price points are spread from about $30k to the mid-$40s.
In calendar 2024 the RAV4 had its best US sales year ever and was the best-selling SUV for the eighth straight year. On JATO registration data it also overtook the F-150 as America's best-selling vehicle.
Toyota's reputation for reliability and strong resale draws loyal repeat buyers and supports the RAV4's residual values. It is a mainstream brand rather than an aspirational one.
Demand kept 2024 hybrids selling near MSRP for much of the year, and dealer markups on hybrids were common early on. Factory offers were limited to modest subsidized APR (about 3.99% for 36 months, 4.99% for 60 months in some regions), and cash rebates were rare.
2024 is the sixth model year of the fifth-generation (XA50) RAV4 that launched for 2019, with only the 2022 facelift and a 2023 infotainment update since then. The all-new sixth generation arrived for 2026, so 2024 buyers got a late-cycle design.
Reviewers praise its efficiency, quick hybrid acceleration and practicality. But in comparison tests it usually trails the newer CR-V Hybrid on refinement and cabin quality, so it is well reviewed without being the class pick.
