The verdict
A mixed-report minivan, strong on reliability and held back by efficiency.
The 2020 Sienna is the last of the old gas-V6 Siennas and the tenth year of a design that launched for 2011. It is still one of the most trustworthy used family vans you can buy, with top-tier reliability, an adult-sized third row, up to 8 seats and the only AWD option in its class that year. In return you get 21 MPG combined, a 7-inch screen and a cabin that felt old even when new. As a used purchase it makes sense if durability and space matter more to you than fuel bills or tech.
Jump to scoresStrengths
- Reliability you can count on
- Three rows that fit adults
- Built around family logistics
What holds it back
- Thirsty at the pump
- Tech that was dated on day one
- Crash protection and driver aids trail newer rivals

Detailed scoring by subject
1Performance & PowertrainOne of the Sienna's weakest categories.0.84F
The 2020 Sienna is a late third-generation (XL30) carry-over: a 296 hp 3.5L V6 is the only engine on every trim. That is the most power in the 2020 minivan class (Odyssey 280 hp, Pacifica 287 hp) but sits in the lower half of the 150–550 hp band. The 2020 Sienna had no hybrid; the hybrid-only Sienna arrived with the 2021 fourth generation.
263 lb-ft from the V6 is on par with the Odyssey (262) and Pacifica (262) — class-typical for a V6 minivan and mid-low on the 130–500 lb-ft band.
Instrumented tests of the 8-speed V6 Sienna land between 6.9 s (FWD) and 7.3 s (AWD Limited), so ~7.0 s represents the volume FWD LE. Brisk for the class — quicker than the 2021+ hybrid Sienna and level with the Odyssey.
Toyota's naturally aspirated 3.5L V6 is smooth, linear and quiet, with ample midrange and no turbo lag or cylinder-deactivation shudder. Reviewers rated it among the segment's best engines; it loses a few points only for a slightly soft initial throttle tip-in tuned for economy.
The Aisin 8-speed automatic shifts smoothly but is tuned to upshift early for economy, and reviewers note occasional hesitant kickdowns and gear hunting on grades. Better than the Pacifica's 9-speed, a step behind the Odyssey's 10-speed for decisiveness.
Rated at 3,500 lbs when properly equipped, matching the Odyssey and essentially level with the Pacifica (3,600) — the class norm.
In 2020 the Sienna was the only minivan sold in the US with available AWD (Pacifica AWD arrived for 2021); it was offered on the mid and upper trims (LE, XLE, Limited) rather than across the whole range. The system is a basic on-demand front-biased setup with no terrain modes, low range or torque vectoring.
Pavement-oriented: no rugged trim (the Woodland Edition arrived only with the hybrid generation), no skid plates or terrain modes, and minivan ground clearance. Available AWD helps on snow and gravel roads, keeping it marginally above FWD-only rivals.
One powertrain, take it or leave it: the 3.5L V6 with 8-speed automatic on every trim, with FWD/AWD the only choice. No hybrid or plug-in — unlike the 2020 Pacifica, which offered a V6 and a PHEV.
2Efficiency & RangeThe Sienna's lowest-graded category.0.48F
The 2020 Sienna is a gas V6 (no hybrid existed until MY2021), and EPA rates the volume FWD car at 21 MPG combined — class-typical for a 2020 V6 minivan but far below any hybrid.
19 MPG city for the FWD V6 — no electrification to help in stop-and-go driving.
26 MPG highway from the tall 8-speed gearing, competitive with V6 rivals.
A 20-gallon tank at 21 MPG combined gives roughly 420 miles — solid road-trip range despite modest economy.
EPA's current annual fuel-cost estimate for the FWD V6 is $3,200 at 15,000 miles — high, reflecting 21 MPG combined.
Runs on regular unleaded across every trim; no premium recommendation.
3SafetyMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.20C
The 2020 Sienna carries a 5-star NHTSA overall rating, although it gets only 4 stars in the side-impact and rollover sub-ratings.
This is the aging third-generation (2011) structure. It rated Acceptable in the driver-side small overlap test and Marginal on the passenger side, with no TSP award. That places it well behind the Odyssey and the Pacifica.
TSS-P is standard on every grade: AEB with pedestrian detection, lane departure alert with steering assist, auto high beams and radar cruise. Blind-spot monitoring and RCTA are optional on L/LE/SE and standard only on XLE and Limited.
The standard system earned an IIHS vehicle-to-vehicle Superior rating, avoiding collisions at both 12 and 25 mph. The first-generation TSS-P pedestrian detection has no strong night or pedestrian ratings.
BSM with RCTA is alert-only. It is standard on XLE and Limited but optional on the lower grades, and there is no rear cross-traffic braking or safe-exit assist.
Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist gives only corrective nudges near the lane edge. There is no lane-tracing/centering feature, and reviewers found it rudimentary.
Dynamic Radar Cruise Control is standard on every grade, but this generation's system is not well integrated and has no lane centering to form a highway-assist package. Stop-and-go capability is limited compared with newer rivals.
No hands-free driving system is offered on any 2020 Sienna.
Both headlight configurations, the halogen projectors on L through Limited and the HID on the Limited Premium, rate only Acceptable. Auto high beams are standard.
The tall greenhouse and large windows give typical minivan sightlines, though the thick rear pillars create blind zones. A rear camera is standard, but the Bird's Eye View Monitor is limited to the Limited Premium.
IIHS rates LATCH ease of use Acceptable, with full LATCH hardware in 4 rear positions. The wide power sliding doors and 8-seat option help fit several car seats.
4Space & ComfortOne of the Sienna's strongest categories.2.87B-
The 2020 Sienna (late XL30 third generation, carry-over year) seats up to eight with a second-row bench; the volume LE is offered in 7- and 8-passenger form.
Generous front headroom in the upper part of the minivan band, consistent with the boxy third-generation body.
40.5 in is at the low end of the minivan band — less than the Odyssey (40.9) and Pacifica (41.1); tall drivers feel it most.
Second-row headroom is among the best in the class.
37.6 in of published second-row legroom is mid-band, but the long-slide captain's chairs make usable space far more flexible than the figure suggests.
With 36.3 in of legroom and 38.3 in of headroom, the third row genuinely seats adults, reclines, and is reached past long-sliding second-row seats; the 60/40 power-folding third row on upper trims stows into the floor.
87.1 cu ft behind the second row with the third row stowed is competitive; the 39.1 cu ft well behind the third row is one of the deepest in the class.
150 cu ft maximum is near the top of the segment, though it requires physically removing the heavy second-row seats.
Competitive cubbies, a large center console, deep rear cargo well, a 120V outlet and up to five USB ports, but no built-in vacuum (Odyssey) or Stow 'n Go floor bins (Pacifica).
Supportive front seats and comfortable, long-sliding second-row captain's chairs (lounge seats with ottomans on Limited) make it a good long-haul van; the 8-seat bench's middle position is less comfortable.
Smooth, compliant ride that absorbs road imperfections; the SE's sport-tuned suspension is firmer, but the volume LE is plush with modest float.
Refined and quiet at a cruise, but not as hushed as the newer Odyssey or Pacifica; the V6 gets vocal under hard acceleration.
Tri-zone automatic climate is standard, but heated front seats arrive only at XLE and up, with no ventilated seats offered; rear sunshades on upper trims.
5Cost of OwnershipOne of the Sienna's strongest categories.2.46C+
The 2020 Sienna, the final year of the XL30 generation and still a 3.5L V6 gas van, opened with the L FWD at $31,565 before destination — competitive with the Odyssey LX and Pacifica L of the same year.
The LE FWD was the high-volume fleet and retail configuration, adding power sliding doors, tri-zone climate and the 7-inch Entune 3.0 screen with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto over the L. The XLE is the other common retail pick at roughly $41,000 delivered.
The mature 2GR-FKS V6 and 8-speed automatic were well-proven by 2020 and inexpensive to service; RepairPal rates the 2020 Sienna's ownership costs below average. A conventional V6 drivetrain (spark plugs, belt, fluids, more brake wear than the later hybrid) costs somewhat more than the 2021+ hybrid.
The Sienna has long been the minivan residual-value leader (Wikipedia notes its Best Resale Value award), and the 2020 model year also benefited from the 2021–2023 used-car price spike. Being the last V6 gas Sienna before the hybrid-only redesign trims it slightly versus the later hybrids.
Industry-floor basic coverage, matching Honda and Chrysler and trailing Kia's 5-year coverage on the Sedona.
Standard 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain coverage; as a gas V6 van the 2020 Sienna carries none of the extended hybrid-component coverage the 2021+ hybrid gets.
ToyotaCare covers factory-scheduled maintenance plus 24-hour roadside assistance for 2 years / 25,000 miles — a genuine multi-year package ahead of Honda and Chrysler, which included no scheduled maintenance, though shorter than Hyundai/Kia-style 3-year programs. Connected-service trials (Safety Connect, Wi-Fi) were also included.
$35,555 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (60% retained, or about $21,333) leaves about $14,222 in depreciation. Add the projected $4,500 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $18,722 in total.
6Reliability & QualityThe Sienna's best-graded category.3.57A-
2020 was the tenth and final model year of the XL30 generation, and by then most of its early faults had been engineered out. Consumer Reports rates the 2020 'much more reliable' than other 2020 vehicles, and J.D. Power gives it 81/100 for quality & reliability plus a Dependability Award. Both sources agree on top-tier reliability, which places it above the Odyssey's peer score.
Around the 2020 model year Toyota stayed in the top tier of dependability studies. It sat at or near the top of Consumer Reports' brand reliability rankings with Lexus, and was the highest-ranked mass-market brand in J.D. Power's VDS.
NHTSA lists only 2 recalls for the 2020, and one of them (19V-532) covers Braun's aftermarket mobility conversions, not the factory van. The real factory recall is the industry-wide Denso low-pressure fuel pump campaign, which is a stall risk and so carries real weight. The generation's sliding-door class action covered 2011–2018 vans, so it does not reach 2020. This is a light record for a minivan, sitting at the top of the typical band.
The 2020 is a carry-over of the 2017-onward setup: the 3.5L 2GR-FKS V6 (296 hp) and the Aisin 8-speed automatic. The 2GR family has a long record past 200k miles across Toyota and Lexus. By 2020 the 8-speed had several years in service with no failure pattern. Known nuisances are water-pump seepage and timing-cover oil leaks.
In its final year the XL30 cabin was dated. The volume LE trim has abundant hard plastics on the dash and doors, and it trails the Pacifica and Odyssey for perceived richness, though 2018's refresh did add Entune 3.0 with an updated center stack. The materials are durable but plain.
After ten years of XL30 production at Toyota's Indiana plant, assembly was fully mature and panel fit consistent. J.D. Power quality scores are strong. Scattered sliding-door and infotainment complaints remain, which keeps it out of the top band.
Toyota runs one of the two densest franchised service networks in the US, roughly 1,200+ dealers, with solid service satisfaction. Service for a conventional V6 van is available almost anywhere.
The 2GR V6 and its ancillaries are shared with the Highlander, Camry, Avalon and many Lexus models, so parts are abundant and independent shops know the engine well. Repair costs run near or below the minivan average. Sliding-door motors and cables are minivan-specific and mostly dealer-sourced.
7Technology & InfotainmentOne of the Sienna's weakest categories.0.64F
A 7-inch Entune 3.0 screen on every trim — small by 2020 standards and at the floor of the band.
Entune 3.0 retains physical knobs and buttons, but its graphics are dated, the screen is small and responses are slow; reviewers rate it behind Uconnect and Honda's newer system.
Wired Apple CarPlay and Amazon Alexa are standard on every 2020 grade, but nothing is wireless, and Toyota's launch materials list no Android Auto for the Sienna.
Basic voice commands; navigation ranges from phone-tethered Scout GPS Link on lower trims to integrated Dynamic Navigation on XLE Premium/Limited. Functional but owners bypass it via CarPlay.
An adequate base six-speaker system, with a JBL premium setup (Clari-Fi, sound staging) restricted to Limited grades.
Analog gauges with a 4.2-inch TFT multi-information display between them; no full-digital cluster on any trim.
No over-the-air vehicle updates; connected navigation on upper trims gets cloud map/POI data at most. Software updates require a dealer visit.
Safety Connect and Wi-Fi hotspot on LE and up, with Entune Remote Connect (remote lock/start, vehicle finder) via subscription; no digital key.
Five USB ports cover all three rows (USB-A, not USB-C) and a 120V outlet is available, but there is no wireless phone charging.
Smart Key proximity entry and push-button start are standard from XLE up; the volume LE uses a remote fob with power sliding doors, and the power liftgate is standard only on SE/XLE/Limited. No phone-as-key.
Backup camera standard; rear park sonar only via packages; Bird's Eye View surround camera limited to the Limited Premium.
No head-up display offered on any 2020 Sienna trim.
8Use-Case FitMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.35C+
Power sliding doors, a low floor, 8-seat capacity and long-sliding second-row seats make daily kid logistics easy; the deep cargo well takes a stroller with the third row up. Heavy removable second-row seats are the main compromise.
TSS-P (AEB with pedestrian detection, lane departure with steering assist, adaptive cruise) standard on every grade, plus 5-star NHTSA overall; held back by a Marginal IIHS passenger small-overlap result and blind-spot monitoring that costs extra on the LE.
Tri-zone climate, USB in all three rows, an adult-usable third row, a 16.4-inch dual-view rear entertainment screen available, and 39 cu ft of luggage space with every seat filled.
Smooth V6, light steering and a soft ride make it easy around town, and adaptive cruise is standard; the 8-speed can be slow to downshift and the van's size is always felt.
21 MPG combined is typical of a V6 minivan but expensive per mile next to the hybrid Pacifica and the later hybrid Sienna.
A 200-inch-plus body with a 37.5-ft turning circle needs care in tight lots; good outward visibility helps, but parking sensors and surround view are package or top-trim extras.
3,500-lb tow rating on every trim and 150 cu ft of cargo space with seats removed make it a capable light hauler, but it is not a work vehicle.
A proven 2GR V6 and a long-running platform with a strong reliability reputation; widely used as a livery/shuttle van, though the interior is family-oriented rather than work-hardened.
Cargo tie-downs, roof rails and a 120V outlet, but no work-focused features or upfit ecosystem.
A comfortable, smooth highway cruiser with standard adaptive cruise and roughly 420 miles of range; lane-keeping is assist-only, and cabin noise trails the best rivals.
The only 2020 minivan with available AWD (SE, XLE, Limited), plus 3,500-lb towing for small trailers and a flat-ish load floor for car-camping; ground clearance is still minivan-low.
Deep third-row well, stow-flat third row, removable second row and 150 cu ft maximum swallow bikes and bulky gear; roof rails and tow prep add capacity.
9Driving ExperienceMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.09C
Secure and predictable but with noticeable body roll in the volume LE; the SE's sport-tuned suspension tightens it up. Trails the Odyssey and Pacifica for composure.
Electric steering is precise and nicely weighted but numb, with little feedback.
Adequate stopping power with a soft but linear, predictable pedal; not class-leading on stopping distance.
The naturally aspirated 296-hp V6 is smooth and strong with no stop/start or cylinder deactivation, but the 8-speed automatic can hunt and hesitate on kickdown.
Quiet and vibration-free in normal driving; the V6 gets a little loud at high revs, but the sound is not coarse.
37.5 ft is average for the minivan class and mid-band.
A commanding, upright position with good outward visibility, easy ingress and logical physical controls; the wide, button-heavy center stack and short front legroom (40.5 in) cost points.
The strong V6 makes it brisk, and the SE adds some poise, but the volume LE is an appliance focused on comfort.
10Value & Market PositionMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.98C-
Every 2020 Sienna came with the 296-hp V6, Toyota Safety Sense P (pre-collision with pedestrian detection, lane-departure alert, auto high beams, adaptive cruise) and Apple CarPlay plus newly added Android Auto. The base L still made do with manual sliding doors and a small screen, so it is competitive rather than loaded.
Pricing was in line with the Odyssey and Pacifica and the Sienna alone offered AWD at a modest premium, but the aging cabin, older infotainment and thirstier V6 gave less modern content per dollar than the newer rivals, partly offset by strong resale and heavy run-out incentives.
One of the widest minivan lineups of its year: eight grades from L to Limited Premium, a sporty SE with the new Nightshade Edition, 7- or 8-passenger seating and the segment's only AWD option.
Calendar-2020 sales fell to 42,885 as the old generation wound down ahead of the all-new 2021 hybrid, a record low that put it well behind the Pacifica and Odyssey.
Toyota's reputation for reliability and resale value carries strong weight with minivan buyers. The Sienna is known for long ownership — it won the Longest-Kept Minivan award in 2019 — though the minivan category itself lacks aspirational cachet.
As the run-out year of a ten-year-old generation, the 2020 Sienna was commonly offered with cash back and low-APR financing, especially as dealers cleared stock for the 2021 redesign — a real buyer benefit without fire-sale pricing.
The 2020 model year was the tenth and final year of the XL30 generation that launched for 2011, with only mid-cycle refreshes for 2015 and 2018; an all-new hybrid-only Sienna arrived for 2021, so buyers faced an immediate redesign.
Reviewers praised the Sienna's strong V6, available AWD and reliability, but by 2020 it routinely ranked behind the Odyssey, Pacifica and (on value) Kia in comparisons, faulted for a dated cabin and tech; its award case rested on resale and ownership rather than test wins.
