The verdict
A mixed-report minivan, strong on efficiency and held back by performance.
The 2022 Sienna is the minivan to buy if you care most about running costs and peace of mind. Every one is a 36-MPG hybrid that goes about 650 miles on a tank, it earned an IIHS Top Safety Pick+, and it was J.D. Power's most dependable minivan in its model year. You give up some things for that. At 245 hp and about 7.7 seconds to 60 mph it is the slowest van in the class, the engine drones when you push it, the infotainment is dated, and the second row doesn't come out, so maximum cargo stops at 101 cu ft.
Jump to scoresStrengths
- Hybrid fuel economy no gas minivan can match
- Top-tier crash protection and standard driver aids
- The most dependable minivan of its year
What holds it back
- Slowest minivan in the class
- Loud, coarse engine when you press on
- Second row can't come out, so cargo tops out early

Detailed scoring by subject
1Performance & PowertrainThe Sienna's lowest-graded category.0.67F
2022 is the second model year of the fourth-generation (XL40) Sienna, a carry-over powertrain year: a 2.5L Dynamic Force four plus Toyota's hybrid system for 245 hp combined on every trim. That is the lowest output among minivans (Odyssey 280 hp, Pacifica 287 hp) and sits low in the 150–550 hp band.
Toyota quotes 176 lb-ft for the engine and no combined system torque, so the engine figure is the comparable published spec. It understates real launch thrust from the front motor, but against 262 lb-ft V6 rivals it lands near the bottom of the minivan band.
Instrumented tests of the XL40 Sienna cluster around 7.7 seconds with a driver aboard. Fine for family duty but the slowest of the mainstream minivans (Odyssey ~7.0 s, Pacifica ~7.3 s).
Around town the hybrid is the smoothest powertrain in the class — silent EV creep, seamless engine start/stop, no turbo lag. Under load the 2.5L four revs high and turns coarse and loud on merges and grades, a consistent reviewer complaint that keeps it below the Odyssey's V6.
The planetary eCVT has no gears to hunt and no shift shock, avoiding the hunting criticized in the Pacifica's 9-speed. The only knock is the rubber-band rev flare at full throttle; the attendant noise is scored under refinement.
3,500 lbs properly equipped — level with the Odyssey and Carnival and just behind the Pacifica's 3,600 lbs. Enough for a small boat or utility trailer.
Electronic On-Demand AWD (a dedicated rear electric motor, no driveshaft) is optional on every 2022 trim and standard on the new-for-2022 Woodland Edition — the broadest AWD availability in the segment. It is a basic slip-triggered system with no low range, terrain modes or torque vectoring, so it stays mid-band; still well ahead of the FWD-only Odyssey.
The Woodland Edition, new for 2022, adds standard AWD, a modest ride-height increase, roof rails and a tow hitch — enough for gravel roads, trailheads and snow, and more than any rival minivan offers. No skid plates, lockers or terrain modes and low-slung minivan geometry limit it to light unpaved use.
One powertrain on every trim — the 245 hp 2.5L hybrid — with FWD/AWD as the only choice; no gas-only, PHEV or EV. Slightly above the single-powertrain Odyssey because the one option is electrified, far behind the Pacifica's gas V6 plus PHEV.
2Efficiency & RangeThe Sienna's best-graded category.4.00A+
The 2022 Sienna carries over the hybrid-only 2.5L powertrain; volume LE/XLE trims are FWD at 36 MPG combined. That makes it by far the most efficient non-plug-in minivan sold, roughly 60–80% better than V6 rivals.
Full-hybrid operation with EV creep and regenerative braking delivers city economy equal to highway — ideal for school runs and stop-and-go traffic.
The hybrid advantage narrows at highway speed, but 36 MPG still leads V6 minivans by 8–10 MPG.
An 18.0-gallon tank at 36 MPG combined gives roughly 650 miles per fill — best in the minivan class.
EPA's current annual-cost estimate for the FWD Sienna is $1,850 on regular fuel — well below V6 minivans at the same price assumption.
Regular 87-octane unleaded; self-charging hybrid with no plug or premium requirement, so the efficiency comes with no added owner effort or cost.
3SafetyOne of the Sienna's strongest categories.3.50A-
The 2022 Sienna, second model year of the XL40 generation, carries a 5-star NHTSA overall rating; the frontal crash sub-rating is 4 stars, the rest 5.
The 2022 Sienna earned an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ with Good ratings in every crashworthiness test, including both the original and updated side tests. This predates IIHS's rear-passenger moderate-overlap test that later exposed the minivan class.
Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard on every 2022 Sienna trim, including the base LE: pre-collision with pedestrian/cyclist detection, full-speed-range dynamic radar cruise, lane departure alert with steering assist, Lane Tracing Assist, road sign assist and automatic high beams. Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert is also standard, so the core list is complete. Rear automatic braking and the 360-degree camera are reserved for upper trims.
The standard TSS 2.0 system earned IIHS Superior for vehicle-to-vehicle, avoiding collisions at both 12 and 25 mph, and Advanced for daytime pedestrian. A nighttime pedestrian rating was not part of the published 2022 results, which keeps it out of the top of the band.
Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert is standard on every trim. Coverage is alert-only, rear cross-traffic braking is optional on upper trims, and Safe Exit Assist did not arrive until later in the generation.
Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist and Lane Tracing Assist are standard and center the van competently on well-marked highways. Reviewers note that TSS 2.0's centering wanders on faded markings and can be naggy, a step below the best systems.
Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control with stop-and-go is standard on all trims and pairs with Lane Tracing Assist as a hands-on highway assist. TSS 2.0 can be abrupt in braking and slow to resume compared with the later TSS 3.0.
No 2022 Sienna trim offers hands-free highway driving; every assist feature requires hands on the wheel.
LED headlights with standard automatic high beams are fitted across the range. The 2022 TSP+ award required Acceptable-or-Good headlights standard on every trim, which the Sienna met, though not every configuration rated Good.
A tall greenhouse and upright seating give the commanding forward view minivans are known for. The XL40's higher beltline and thick, styled rear pillars leave more over-the-shoulder blind zone than an Odyssey. That is partly offset by the 360-degree Panoramic View Monitor on upper trims and a digital rearview mirror on Platinum.
IIHS rates the Sienna's LATCH ease-of-use Good+, with full child-seat hardware in five seating positions. Wide power sliding doors and long-slide second-row captain's chairs make installing car seats easy.
4Space & ComfortMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.63C+
The volume LE/XLE grades seat eight via a stowable second-row middle seat; upper grades are seven-passenger only.
Generous front headroom for the class, slightly behind Carnival; the XLE's standard moonroof trims some of it.
Front legroom is the Sienna's tightest dimension and trails Odyssey and Carnival; the wide Bridge console also crowds knee space.
Second-row headroom is excellent for the segment.
Nominal 39.9 in second-row legroom, with very long fore-aft seat travel that lets the second row stretch out when the third row is empty.
38.7 in of third-row legroom and 37.4 in of headroom make the way-back usable by adults; access past the sliding second row is easy, though the cushion sits low and the second row cannot be removed.
Cargo space behind the second row trails Odyssey and Carnival because the hybrid battery packaging and fixed second row limit floor depth.
The non-removable second row caps maximum cargo far below rivals' 140-158 cu ft.
The Bridge center console with its large underpass bin, plentiful cupholders, a 1,500-watt 120V AC outlet, seven USB ports and the available FridgeBox add real utility; offset by the second row that cannot be removed.
Supportive front seats and comfortable second-row captain's chairs (ottomans on Limited/Platinum AWD); reviewers note limited front knee room and a low third-row cushion.
The TNGA-K platform rides comfortably and controls body motion well, though larger wheels on XSE/Limited/Platinum firm it up over sharp bumps.
Quiet at low speed and cruising, but the 2.5L four drones loudly through the eCVT under acceleration, and road noise is noted on lower grades.
Heated front seats from XLE, heated wheel and ventilated fronts on upper grades, heated second-row captain's chairs and four-zone climate on Platinum, plus rear climate standard.
5Cost of OwnershipMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.63C+
In 2022, the second year of the hybrid-only fourth generation (XL40), the LE FWD was the entry point at $35,775 delivered. That made it one of the cheapest ways into the segment while still coming standard as a hybrid.
The XLE was the volume trim. It added SofTex upholstery, heated front seats, a moonroof and a power liftgate over the LE for about $5,300 more, and it still came in below a comparably equipped Odyssey EX-L or Pacifica Limited.
The hybrid drivetrain has no starter, alternator, accessory belt or conventional automatic to service, and regenerative braking extends brake life. ToyotaCare also covers the first two years of scheduled service, so the Sienna sits at the bottom of the segment for maintenance cost.
The fourth-generation Sienna is the minivan-segment residual benchmark. Hybrid efficiency, Toyota's reliability reputation, and supply shortages that persisted through 2022 held used prices high.
This is the standard Toyota new-vehicle limited warranty and sits at the industry floor. It matches Honda and Chrysler but trails Kia's 5-year basic coverage.
Headline powertrain coverage is the standard 5 yr / 60,000 mi. Because every Sienna is a hybrid, each van also carries 8-yr/100k-mi hybrid-component and 10-yr/150k-mi traction-battery coverage, which the scored figure does not capture.
ToyotaCare includes 2 years / 25,000 miles of scheduled maintenance and 2 years of unlimited-mileage roadside assistance, plus Safety Connect and Remote Connect trials. That is clearly ahead of Honda and Chrysler, which include no maintenance, but shorter than the 3-year Hyundai/Kia programs.
$41,065 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (62% retained, or about $25,460) leaves about $15,605 in depreciation. Add the projected $2,113 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $17,718 in total.
6Reliability & QualityOne of the Sienna's strongest categories.3.48B+
The 2022 Sienna is the year J.D. Power later named the most dependable minivan: it won its segment in the VDS, which measures three-year-old cars, with the fewest problems in the class. Consumer Reports rates it only about average for its model year, though, and J.D. Power's own predicted-reliability score is 74 (Average), so this lands at the bottom of the top band. An early-generation 2022 car is held below the later-year 2026 car.
Over the years this car was built and owned, Toyota sat consistently near the top of Consumer Reports' brand reliability rankings with Lexus, and above the industry average in J.D. Power's VDS. Scored in step with the other 2022 Toyotas in this dataset.
The 2022 Sienna has four NHTSA campaigns on record and none touches the engine, hybrid system or traction battery. Two are small or software-only: a seat-belt webbing guide on 2,259 eight-seat vans, and a Skid Control ECU reflash shared across the lineup. The larger third-row seatback-bolt campaign covers all 2021–2025 vans, and the fourth is a third-party wheelchair-conversion recall. The kick-sensor battery-drain complaint is a TSB-level annoyance rather than a systemic fault. Typical-to-light activity, above the Odyssey and Pacifica.
Every 2022 Sienna is a hybrid: the 2.5L A25A-FXS with Toyota's planetary THS II e-CVT, the same family used in Camry, RAV4 and Highlander hybrids, which has a long high-mileage record. In 2022 that powertrain was only in its second year in this heavier van, so the Sienna had less van-specific long-term data than later model years; the E-Four AWD rear motor is the only hardware it doesn't share with the other hybrids.
Reviewers consistently criticized the fourth-generation Sienna's extensive hard plastics on the lower dash, the bridge console and the door panels of LE/XLE trims. It trails the Pacifica's and Carnival's more upscale cabins at similar money; Limited and Platinum add leather but don't change that picture.
The segment-winning dependability result for the 2022 model year implies few build-related complaints over three years of ownership, and assembly at the Indiana plant has no recurring panel-gap or rattle theme. It stays short of the top band because the kick-sensor electrical fault and early-generation launch-year build quality appear in owner reports.
Toyota has one of the two densest mainstream dealer networks in the US, at roughly 1,200+ stores, and every one services hybrids routinely, which matters for a hybrid-only van. Service satisfaction is good but not class-topping.
The engine and hybrid transaxle are shared with Toyota's highest-volume hybrids, so parts are plentiful and independent shops know the system. Minivan-specific hardware is mostly dealer-sourced: power sliding-door mechanisms, liftgate parts and the kick sensors. An out-of-warranty traction battery remains a four-figure repair.
7Technology & InfotainmentOne of the Sienna's weakest categories.1.49D
A 9-inch touchscreen is standard across the 2022 lineup with no larger option.
The 2022 Sienna still runs Toyota's dated Entune 3.0 interface, with grainy graphics and slow response to inputs even under phone projection; physical knobs help.
Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard but wired only on the 2022 model; wireless projection arrived with the later Audio Multimedia update.
Basic voice commands plus Alexa integration; native navigation on upper grades has dated graphics, so most owners use phone projection. Driver Easy Speak intercom is a useful addition.
Base six-speaker audio is adequate; the available 12-speaker JBL system with 1,200 W is a meaningful upgrade.
Analog gauges flank a multi-information display, 7-inch on upper grades; no full-digital cluster offered.
The Entune 3.0 system offers no meaningful over-the-air software updates; map updates are dealer/USB based.
Toyota app provides remote start, lock/unlock and vehicle status via Remote Connect, but it is a trial-then-subscription service and no digital key is offered.
Seven USB ports across all three rows, an available wireless charger, and a 1,500-watt 120V AC outlet make device power a strength.
Smart key with push-button start on all grades and hands-free power sliding doors/liftgate on upper grades; remote start depends on the Remote Connect subscription and there is no phone-as-key.
Backup camera standard, Panoramic View Monitor on upper grades and a digital rearview mirror on Platinum, but the camera image quality is middling and parking sensors are not standard on volume trims.
A large 10-inch color head-up display is available, but only on the top Platinum grade.
8Use-Case FitMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.65C+
Dual power sliding doors, eight-seat availability and IIHS Good+ LATCH ease of use make daily kid duty easy; the fixed second row limits flexibility.
IIHS Top Safety Pick+, NHTSA five-star overall, and TSS 2.0 with BSM/RCTA standard on every grade including LE.
Usable third row, 33.5 cu ft behind it, rear climate, seven USB ports and available rear entertainment; drone under acceleration and limited front legroom hold it back.
Smooth, quiet low-speed hybrid operation and standard full-speed radar cruise make traffic easy; the engine gets loud when merging.
36 MPG combined is far beyond any gas minivan, making it exceptionally cheap to commute in for its size.
A 38.4 ft turning circle and minivan footprint take care in town; Panoramic View Monitor helps on upper grades.
Only 3,500 lb towing and a 101 cu ft max cargo hold (second row not removable) limit work hauling.
Toyota's proven hybrid system and strong reliability reputation support durability, though the minivan's interior and chassis are family-oriented.
The 1,500 W AC outlet is a genuine jobsite asset, but there is little upfit ecosystem and the fixed second row blocks large loads.
Long range from 36 MPG and an 18-gallon tank, standard full-speed radar cruise and lane tracing, and a comfortable ride; highway engine drone is the endurance limit.
AWD on every grade, the new Woodland Edition with extra clearance and roof rails, and the 1,500 W outlet suit camping; still a road-biased minivan.
Deep well behind a one-motion fold third row, but the second row cannot be removed, capping long-item hauling at 101 cu ft versus rivals' 140+.
9Driving ExperienceOne of the Sienna's weakest categories.2.14C
TNGA-K gives secure, composed handling with good body control for a minivan, though it is not as tidy as the Odyssey.
Accurate, light steering with little feedback.
Regen/friction blending is smooth for a hybrid and stopping is adequate for a 4,600 lb van.
Seamless electric-assisted starts and engine stop/start, but 245 hp feels strained and laggy when passing.
The 2.5L four drones coarsely through the eCVT under load, the most-cited complaint in reviews.
Average turning circle for a minivan.
Commanding view and good adjustment, but the tall Bridge console and limited front legroom crowd taller drivers' knees.
A competent appliance; the XSE adds sportier styling and tuning but little genuine engagement.
10Value & Market PositionGrades above the middle of the scale.2.92B-
The $35,775 LE came standard with the 245-hp hybrid, Toyota Safety Sense 2.0, dual power sliding doors, a 9-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, tri-zone climate and 8-passenger seating, which is competitive content for the money. Heated seats, the power liftgate and leatherette, however, required the XLE.
Every 2022 Sienna is a 36-MPG hybrid, against roughly 22 MPG for V6 rivals, with AWD available on every trim for a modest upcharge and class-leading resale. Real transaction prices above MSRP in 2022 eroded part of that advantage.
Six well-spaced trims (LE, XLE, XSE, the Woodland Edition new for 2022, Limited, Platinum) span $35.8K–$51.2K, with FWD or AWD and 7- or 8-seat layouts. The single hybrid powertrain is the only real gap.
In 2022 the Sienna was one of the top two US minivans. Demand consistently outran the chip- and hybrid-supply-constrained production, so its volume reflects what Toyota could build rather than weak interest.
Toyota's reliability-and-resale reputation is the strongest of any mainstream brand and matters a great deal to risk-averse family buyers. It directly supports the Sienna's residuals.
The 2022 Sienna was one of the hardest vehicles to buy at sticker. Pandemic-era shortages and high hybrid demand meant widespread dealer markups and almost no factory cash or subvented financing.
2022 was the second model year of the all-new fourth-generation XL40 Sienna (TNGA-K, hybrid-only), so the design was brand-new. A mid-cycle refresh was still years away (MY2025).
Reviewers praised the 36-MPG hybrid, available AWD and Toyota's predicted reliability, and the Sienna earned IIHS Top Safety Pick-level recognition and best-minivan honors. It typically lost comparison tests on driving refinement (eCVT drone) and on second-row seat flexibility, so it was a frequent but not automatic winner.
