The verdict

A mixed-report minivan, strong on efficiency and held back by performance.

The 2021 Sienna was the first year of the hybrid-only redesign, and it changed what a minivan can cost to run: 36 MPG combined, about 650 miles per tank, and AWD available on every trim. It pairs that with top-tier crash ratings (IIHS Top Safety Pick+, NHTSA 5 stars) and the best resale value in the class. The trade-offs are a slow, sometimes noisy 245 hp four-cylinder, a second row that slides but never comes out, and tech that already looked dated at launch. If you want the minivan that costs the least to own and holds its value, this is it; if you haul big cargo or want a quiet, punchy highway cruiser, look at the Odyssey or Pacifica.

Detailed scoring by subject

1Performance & PowertrainThe Sienna's lowest-graded category.0.60F
Horsepower
245 hp combined (2.5L I4 hybrid — every trim, FWD or AWD)
24/100
#3 of 3 minivansCompare all →

2021 is the launch year of the fourth-generation (XL40) Sienna, which dropped the previous generation's 296 hp 3.5L V6 for a hybrid-only 2.5L four with 245 hp combined. That is the lowest output in the minivan class (Odyssey 280 hp, Pacifica 287 hp).

Torque
176 lb-ft (2.5L engine); front motor adds 199 lb-ft from zero rpm
12/100
#3 of 3 minivansCompare all →

Toyota publishes only the engine's 176 lb-ft, not a combined system torque, so that is the comparable figure; it understates real off-the-line thrust from the electric front motor but sits near the bottom of the minivan band against 262 lb-ft V6 rivals.

0–60 mph time
7.7 s (Car and Driver instrumented, 2021 Sienna)
30/100
#3 of 3 minivansCompare all →

Adequate for family duty and brisk from a stop thanks to electric torque, but the slowest mainstream minivan (Odyssey ~7.0 s, Pacifica ~7.3 s).

Powertrain refinement70
#2 of 3 minivansCompare all →

Smooth and quiet around town with silent EV creep and seamless engine start/stop, but the 2.5L four revs high and sounds coarse and strained on highway merges and grades with a full load — the most common criticism of the 2021 redesign versus the outgoing V6.

Transmission behavior80
#1 of 3 minivansCompare all →

Toyota's power-split eCVT has no gears to hunt and no shift shock; delivery is seamless. The only knock is the rubber-band flare of revs at full throttle, with the resulting noise scored under refinement.

Max towing capacity
3,500 lbs (properly equipped)
36/100
#2 of 3 minivansCompare all →

Rated at 3,500 lbs, level with the Odyssey and Carnival and at the class norm — enough for a small boat or light utility trailer.

AWD/4WD availability70
#1 of 3 minivansCompare all →

Electronic On-Demand AWD, driven by a separate 54 hp rear motor, is optional on every 2021 trim — the broadest AWD availability in the segment (Odyssey FWD-only, Pacifica AWD on select trims). It is a basic slip-triggered system with no low range or terrain modes, so it lands mid-band.

Off-road capability28
#1 of 3 minivansCompare all →

Pavement-oriented: for 2021 there is no rugged trim (the lifted Woodland Edition did not arrive until the 2022 model year), no skid plates, lockers or terrain modes. Available AWD and roughly 6.3 in of clearance make it competent on gravel and snow and nudge it above FWD-only rivals.

Powertrain lineup breadth32
#2 of 3 minivansCompare all →

One powertrain on every trim — no gas-only, plug-in or EV option — with FWD/AWD the only choice. Slightly above single-V6 rivals because the one option is electrified, but well behind the Pacifica's V6-plus-PHEV pairing.

2Efficiency & RangeThe Sienna's best-graded category.4.00A+
3SafetyOne of the Sienna's strongest categories.3.62A-
NHTSA overall rating
5 stars overall (NHTSA, 2021 Sienna)
100/100
#1 of 3 minivansCompare all →

The redesigned fourth-generation (XL40) Sienna, new for 2021, earned a 5-star NHTSA overall rating in its launch year; some sub-tests (rollover) sit below five stars, as is typical of the class.

IIHS awards & crashworthiness93
#1 of 3 minivansCompare all →

The 2021 Sienna earned the IIHS Top Safety Pick+ with Good ratings in every crashworthiness test, including both small-overlap sides and the updated side test — a big step from the outgoing generation's Acceptable/Marginal small-overlap results. The tougher rear-passenger moderate-overlap test that later exposed minivans did not yet exist.

Standard ADAS suite breadth86
#2 of 3 minivansCompare all →

Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard on every 2021 trim from LE up — pre-collision with pedestrian/low-light and cyclist detection, full-speed-range dynamic radar cruise, lane departure alert with steering assist, lane tracing assist, road sign assist and automatic high beams — and Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert is standard too. Rear cross-traffic braking and the 360-degree camera are reserved for upper trims.

Automatic emergency braking performance82
#1 of 3 minivansCompare all →

The standard pre-collision system avoided collisions at 12 and 25 mph in the IIHS vehicle-to-vehicle test for a Superior rating, and earned Advanced in vehicle-to-pedestrian, avoiding at 12 mph and substantially reducing speed at 25 mph. No nighttime pedestrian result existed under the 2021 protocol.

Blind-spot & cross-traffic coverage76
#1 of 3 minivansCompare all →

Blind Spot Monitor and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert are standard on every 2021 trim, but they are alert-only; rear cross-traffic braking (Parking Support Brake) is optional on upper trims, and Safe Exit Assist did not arrive until later model years.

Lane keeping & centering70
#1 of 3 minivansCompare all →

Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist and Lane Tracing Assist are standard on all 2021 trims and center the van competently on well-marked highways, but TSS 2.0's centering can wander on faded lines and drops out at lower speeds without a lead vehicle.

Adaptive cruise & highway assist76
#2 of 3 minivansCompare all →

Full-speed-range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control with stop-and-go is standard on every 2021 Sienna and pairs with Lane Tracing Assist for a capable hands-on highway assist; reviewers note smooth following with occasionally conservative braking and resume behavior.

Hands-free driving availability10
#2 of 3 minivansCompare all →

No hands-free driving mode was offered on any 2021 Sienna trim; all assistance requires hands on the wheel.

Headlight performance90
#1 of 3 minivansCompare all →

Both the LED reflector and LED projector headlight variants earned Good ratings from IIHS, so every trim gets Good headlights, and automatic high beams are standard across the range.

Outward visibility80
#3 of 3 minivansCompare all →

A tall greenhouse and upright seating give a commanding forward view, while the redesigned body's higher beltline and thicker rear pillars leave more over-the-shoulder blind zone than the Odyssey; the available 360-degree Panoramic View Monitor and the Platinum's digital rearview mirror compensate on upper trims.

Child-seat (LATCH) usability90
#1 of 3 minivansCompare all →

IIHS rated the 2021 Sienna's LATCH Good+, its top grade, with full LATCH hardware in five seating positions; combined with huge power sliding-door openings and long-slide second-row seats, it is among the easiest vehicles for multiple car seats.

4Space & ComfortMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.69C+
Seating capacity
8 seats (2nd-row bench available on LE/XLE); 7 seats with Super Long Slide captain's chairs on XSE/Limited/Platinum
100/100
#1 of 3 minivansCompare all →

2021 is the launch year of the XL40 Sienna; the volume LE/XLE grades offer the 8-passenger configuration, the top of the minivan band. Upper grades trade the eighth seat for captain's chairs.

Front headroom
40.1 in
62/100
#1 of 3 minivansCompare all →

40.1 in is mid-pack for a minivan — a shade under the Odyssey, well clear of the Pacifica.

Front legroom
40.3 in
7/100
#3 of 3 minivansCompare all →

The published 40.3 in is the shortest front legroom among mainstream minivans and sits just above the floor of the band, though the upright seating feels roomier in practice.

Rear headroom
39.9 in (2nd row)
97/100
#1 of 3 minivansCompare all →

Second-row headroom near 40 in is at the top of the minivan band; the boxy roof pays off directly here.

Rear legroom
39.9 in (2nd row); Super Long Slide chairs on XSE/Limited/Platinum travel 25 in
82/100
#2 of 3 minivansCompare all →

39.9 in sits high in the band, and the published figure undersells the upper trims whose second row slides 25 in toward the rear.

Third-row usability84
#2 of 3 minivansCompare all →

38.7 in of third-row legroom and a 60/40 bench that reclines and folds into the rear well make it genuinely adult-usable, with walk-through access past sliding second-row seats. Third-row headroom (~37.4 in) and a low cushion keep it just shy of the Odyssey.

Cargo/trunk volume
75.2 cu ft behind 2nd row (3rd folded); 33.5 cu ft behind 3rd row
46/100
#3 of 3 minivansCompare all →

75.2 cu ft lands mid-band for minivans; the 33.5 cu ft well behind an occupied third row is deep and useful.

Max cargo volume
101.0 cu ft (2nd row slid forward — it does not fold flat or stow)
14/100
#3 of 3 minivansCompare all →

101 cu ft is well short of rivals that stow (Pacifica ~140 cu ft) or remove (Odyssey ~158 cu ft) their second rows; the Sienna's second row only slides.

In-cabin storage & clever solutions72
#3 of 3 minivansCompare all →

The high 'bridge' console with open storage beneath, up to 18 cupholders, an available 1,500W inverter (XLE and up) and an available built-in refrigerator (Platinum) are genuinely clever. The non-stowing second row denies it the flat-floor trick that defines the class leaders.

Seat comfort76
#2 of 3 minivansCompare all →

The Super Long Slide captain's chairs with ottomans (Limited/Platinum FWD) make the second row exceptionally comfortable on long trips; front seats are supportive but relatively flat-cushioned and the low third row is fine rather than plush.

Ride quality77
#2 of 3 minivansCompare all →

The new TNGA-K platform delivers a settled, well-damped ride with good body control; sharp impacts register more firmly on the 20-in wheels of XSE/Limited/Platinum.

Cabin quietness70
#3 of 3 minivansCompare all →

Near-silent in EV mode around town, but the 2.5L four drones under hard acceleration and owners report noticeable road noise above about 50 mph.

Climate & comfort features78
#2 of 3 minivansCompare all →

Multi-zone automatic climate with rear vents is standard; heated front seats arrive at XLE, while ventilated fronts, a heated wheel and heated second-row chairs are concentrated on Limited/Platinum.

5Cost of OwnershipGrades above the middle of the scale.2.80B-
Base MSRP
$35,635 (LE FWD 8-passenger, incl. $1,175 destination; LE AWD $37,635)
73/100
#2 of 3 minivansCompare all →

The all-new hybrid-only 2021 Sienna opened at $34,460 for the LE FWD before destination, a jump over the outgoing V6 van but still competitive with the Pacifica and Odyssey once equipment is matched.

Volume-Trim Price
$40,925 (XLE FWD incl. destination; XLE AWD ~$42,925; lineup $35,635–$51,635)
66/100
#3 of 3 minivansCompare all →

The XLE is the volume trim, adding SofTex upholstery, heated power front seats, a moonroof and hands-free power doors/liftgate over the LE.

5-Year Maintenance & Repair Cost
~$4,000 over 5 yrs (ToyotaCare covers years 1–2 scheduled service)
85/100
#1 of 3 minivansCompare all →

The Toyota Hybrid System II has no starter, alternator, accessory belt or conventional automatic to service, and regenerative braking extends brake life, so the Sienna sits at the low end of minivan maintenance costs; ToyotaCare absorbs the first two years.

5-Year Resale Value Retention
~70% retained at 5 years (iSeeCars range ~61–75%; all-minivan avg ~58%)
100/100
#1 of 3 minivansCompare all →

The 2021 Sienna has held value exceptionally well — post-2021 used-market shortages and hybrid demand kept it trading near original sticker for years — making it the minivan resale benchmark.

Basic warranty
3 yr / 36,000 mi bumper-to-bumper
0/100
#1 of 3 minivansCompare all →

Standard Toyota new-vehicle limited warranty at the industry floor, matching Honda and Chrysler and trailing Kia's 5-year coverage.

Powertrain warranty
5 yr / 60,000 mi powertrain; hybrid components 8 yr / 100,000 mi; HV battery 10 yr / 150,000 mi
0/100
#1 of 3 minivansCompare all →

Headline powertrain coverage is the standard 5 yr / 60,000 mi, though the hybrid-only Sienna also carries 8-year hybrid-component and 10-year traction-battery coverage that the scored figure doesn't capture.

Complimentary maintenance & perks66
#1 of 3 minivansCompare all →

ToyotaCare includes 2 yr / 25,000 mi scheduled maintenance and 2 years of unlimited-mileage roadside assistance, plus Safety Connect and Wi-Fi/connected-service trials — a real package ahead of Honda and Chrysler, but shorter than Hyundai/Kia's 3-year programs.

Effective 5-Year Ownership Cost
$16,278 (≈$12,278 depreciation + $4,000 maintenance)
87/100
#1 of 3 minivansCompare all →

$40,925 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (70% retained, or about $28,648) leaves about $12,278 in depreciation. Add the projected $4,000 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $16,278 in total.

6Reliability & QualityOne of the Sienna's strongest categories.3.34B+
Predicted reliability76
#1 of 3 minivansCompare all →

2021 was the launch year of the fourth-generation (XL40) hybrid-only Sienna. Both major sources rate its predicted reliability as average: J.D. Power gives it 76/100 and warns that the figure is carried over from the outgoing generation, and Consumer Reports gives it a middling 3/5. It scores just below the 2022 car, which had launch-year problems fixed, but well above the Pacifica and Voyager.

Brand reliability track record86
#1 of 3 minivansCompare all →

Throughout the period this car was built and owned, Toyota stayed near the top of Consumer Reports' brand reliability rankings, alongside Lexus and Mazda. It also beat the industry average in J.D. Power's VDS. Scored in line with the other 2021–2022 Toyotas in this dataset.

Recall & TSB history70
#1 of 3 minivansCompare all →

The NHTSA feed lists four campaigns covering the 2021 Sienna, and none involves the engine, the hybrid system or the traction battery. Two are lineup-wide: an occupant-classification sensor short covering about 1M Toyotas, and a Skid Control ECU software update. The third is the third-row seatback-bolt campaign covering 2021–2025, and the fourth is a third-party wheelchair-conversion recall. The OCS airbag-sensor campaign is one more than the 2022 car has, so this scores slightly lower, though activity is still typical and nothing is systemic.

Powertrain durability reputation86
#1 of 3 minivansCompare all →

The powertrain is the 2.5L A25A-FXS engine paired with Toyota's planetary THS II e-CVT, the same family used in Camry, RAV4 and Highlander hybrids, which has a long high-mileage record. In this heavier van, though, 2021 was its first year, and the E-Four rear motor is van-specific, so there was no long-term van data yet.

Interior material quality65
#2 of 3 minivansCompare all →

Reviewers repeatedly criticized the new-generation cabin for hard plastics on the lower dash, the bridge console and the door panels on LE/XLE trims. At similar prices, its interior trails the Pacifica's and Odyssey's in perceived quality. Leather on Limited and Platinum doesn't change that.

Fit & finish72
#1 of 3 minivansCompare all →

Assembly at the Indiana plant is generally consistent. Launch-year owners did report scattered body-panel fitment issues, rattles and problems with the power sliding doors and kick sensors, so it scores a little below the 2022 car.

Dealer & service network88
#1 of 3 minivansCompare all →

Toyota's US dealer network of roughly 1,200+ stores is one of the two densest among mainstream brands, and every store services hybrids routinely, which matters for a hybrid-only van. Service satisfaction is good but not the best in the class.

Parts availability & repair cost84
#1 of 3 minivansCompare all →

The engine and hybrid transaxle are shared with Toyota's highest-volume hybrids, so parts are plentiful and independent shops know the system. Van-specific hardware, such as the power sliding-door mechanisms, liftgate parts and kick sensors, is mostly dealer-sourced, and an out-of-warranty traction battery is still a four-figure repair.

7Technology & InfotainmentOne of the Sienna's weakest categories.1.83C-
Touchscreen size
9.0 in (standard on every 2021 trim)
24/100
#2 of 3 minivansCompare all →

Every 2021 Sienna gets a 9-inch touchscreen; the 12.3-inch unit did not arrive until the 2025 refresh.

Infotainment UX & responsiveness60
#2 of 3 minivansCompare all →

The Entune 3.0-era system is functional with physical knobs and hard climate keys, but its graphics and menus were already dated at launch and slower than Uconnect 5.

Wireless CarPlay / Android Auto58
#2 of 3 minivansCompare all →

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard on every trim but wired only — wireless projection was not offered until the 2025 model year.

Voice control & native navigation56
#2 of 3 minivansCompare all →

Built-in Alexa compatibility and Dynamic Navigation on upper grades are useful, but native voice recognition is basic and most owners default to phone projection.

Audio system quality74
#2 of 3 minivansCompare all →

A 1,200-watt, 12-speaker JBL system is standard on XSE/Limited/Platinum — a branded premium option the Odyssey lacks — while the LE (6 speakers) and XLE (8 speakers) base systems are adequate.

Digital instrument cluster45
#3 of 3 minivansCompare all →

2021 pairs analog gauges with a 7-inch color multi-information display on every trim; no full-digital cluster was offered until the 2025 refresh.

OTA update capability40
#2 of 3 minivansCompare all →

Dynamic Navigation provides cloud map updates on equipped trims, but the Entune-era head unit has no meaningful over-the-air software update path.

Companion app & remote functions62
#2 of 3 minivansCompare all →

Toyota Connected Services include remote start, lock/unlock and vehicle status via the app plus a Wi-Fi hotspot, but Remote Connect reverts to a paid subscription after the trial.

Charging ports & device power80
#2 of 3 minivansCompare all →

Seven USB ports spread through the cabin, Qi wireless charging on upper grades and an available 1,500W/120V inverter from XLE up make it one of the best-powered vans for devices.

Keyless & remote access72
#2 of 3 minivansCompare all →

Smart Key with push-button start and dual power sliding doors are standard; app remote start is subscription-based and hands-free sliding doors/liftgate are upper-trim items. No phone-as-key.

Camera & parking aids70
#2 of 3 minivansCompare all →

A backup camera with projected path is standard; Bird's Eye View with Perimeter Scan, front/rear sonar and a digital rearview mirror come on upper grades (standard on Platinum).

Head-up display availability55
#1 of 3 minivansCompare all →

A 10-inch color HUD is offered, but only on the top Platinum grade.

8Use-Case FitGrades above the middle of the scale.2.98B-
Kid & car-seat practicality82
#3 of 3 minivansCompare all →

Standard dual power sliding doors, a low step-in, Good+ LATCH in five positions and the deep 33.5 cu ft well behind the third row make family logistics easy; the second row slides but cannot stow or be easily removed.

Family safety package82
#1 of 3 minivansCompare all →

IIHS Top Safety Pick+ with Good ratings across the then-current crash tests, NHTSA 5-star overall, and TSS 2.0 plus Blind Spot Monitor with RCTA standard on every grade including the LE.

Family road-trip comfort83
#3 of 3 minivansCompare all →

Multi-zone climate, seven USB ports, an adult-usable third row, available 11.6-in rear entertainment and second-row ottomans, plus real luggage space with all seats filled.

Daily driving ease80
#1 of 3 minivansCompare all →

Silent electric creep in traffic, a shift-free eCVT and standard full-speed adaptive cruise make it relaxing; engine drone on hard merges and the van's size are the irritants.

Commuting cost efficiency92
#1 of 3 minivansCompare all →

36 MPG combined on regular fuel is roughly 60% better than V6 rivals, with low maintenance costs and brake wear spared by regen.

Parking & maneuverability58
#2 of 3 minivansCompare all →

A 203.7-in-long van with a 38.3 ft turning circle (39.2 ft on 20-in wheels) is a handful in tight garages; sliding doors and good glass help, and Bird's Eye View is upper-trim only.

Work capability56
#3 of 3 minivansCompare all →

3,500 lb towing and 101 cu ft cover light duty, but no flat load floor because the second row does not stow, and 245 hp is modest under load.

Durability for work duty80
#1 of 3 minivansCompare all →

Toyota's hybrid system is the most fleet-proven in the industry and the Sienna is a livery staple; as a first-year redesign it is slightly less proven than later model years.

Jobsite & upfit practicality58
#1 of 3 minivansCompare all →

An available 1,500W inverter, cargo-well tie-downs and a strong mobility-conversion aftermarket help, but there are no washable surfaces or flat floor; the Woodland Edition with standard hitch had not arrived yet.

Long-distance comfort & range85
#1 of 3 minivansCompare all →

About 650 miles per tank, standard full-speed adaptive cruise with lane tracing, a composed ride and lounge-like second row; engine drone on grades and highway road noise are the blemishes.

Outdoor & adventure capability58
#2 of 3 minivansCompare all →

Electric on-demand AWD on every trim is unique among 2021 minivans except the Pacifica, and the inverter helps camping, but there is no rugged trim, roughly 6.3 in of clearance and no off-road hardware.

Gear & luggage flexibility62
#3 of 3 minivansCompare all →

The deep third-row well swallows luggage and the third row folds flat into it, but the fixed second row limits max volume to 101 cu ft versus 140–158 cu ft for Pacifica and Odyssey.

9Driving ExperienceOne of the Sienna's weakest categories.2.22C
Handling & agility62
#3 of 3 minivansCompare all →

The lower TNGA-K floor and battery under the front seats keep it planted and predictable, but soft tuning brings body roll and modest grip; reviewers rank the Odyssey ahead for body control.

Steering feel58
#3 of 3 minivansCompare all →

Light, accurate electric steering that is easy in parking lots but offers little feedback.

Braking confidence62
#3 of 3 minivansCompare all →

Regen-to-friction blending is smooth, but the pedal is soft initially and Consumer Reports' testing of the 2021 drew criticism of its braking, prompting owner-forum discussion.

Powertrain smoothness & response77
#1 of 3 minivansCompare all →

Seamless EV pull-away and invisible engine starts make it smoother at low speed than V6 rivals; full-throttle response suffers from eCVT rev flare.

Silent around town, but the 2.5L four drones loudly on merges and grades — the most repeated criticism of the 2021 redesign versus the outgoing V6.

38.3 ft for the volume LE/XLE is mid-band for minivans — wider than the Odyssey, tighter than the Pacifica.

Driving position & ergonomics68

Upright, commanding seating with good adjustment and physical climate/audio controls; the tall bridge console crowds the driver's knee and blocks front walk-through, and the 9-in screen sits a reach away.

A pleasant, efficient appliance with no driver appeal: numb steering, soft body control and a droning four under load.

Even the $35.6K LE includes the hybrid powertrain, Toyota Safety Sense 2.0, tri-zone automatic climate, dual power sliding doors, a power liftgate and a 9-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto/Alexa and Wi-Fi — generous for a base minivan, though heated seats and leatherette require the XLE.

Every 2021 Sienna is a 36-MPG hybrid with AWD available on every trim for about $2K, at prices comparable to V6 rivals returning ~22 MPG; combined with segment-best resale, the content-plus-running-cost case is the best in the class.

Trim & configuration breadth78

Five well-spaced trims (LE, XLE, XSE, Limited, Platinum) from ~$35.6K to ~$51.6K, AWD on all, and 7- or 8-passenger seating on the XLE cover most budgets; the single hybrid powertrain and the absence of the later Woodland/Nightshade variants are the gaps.

Sales popularity & market acceptance82

The redesigned hybrid Sienna launched to demand that outstripped supply, with long dealer waitlists through 2021–2022, and it immediately ranked among the top US minivans alongside the Pacifica and Odyssey.

Brand desirability & image85

Toyota's reliability-and-resale reputation is the strongest of any mainstream brand and is exactly what risk-averse family buyers pay for; not aspirational, but a clear net positive on residuals.

Deals & incentive availability25

The 2021 launch coincided with the semiconductor shortage: inventory was scarce and Siennas routinely sold at or above MSRP with dealer markups, leaving buyers essentially no discounts versus the incentive-heavy Pacifica.

2021 is the launch year of the fourth-generation (XL40) Sienna on the TNGA-K platform with an all-new hybrid-only powertrain — the newest design in the segment at the time, years ahead of the 2018 Odyssey and 2017 Pacifica.

Critical reception & awards76

Reviewers praised the 36-MPG hybrid, available AWD and upscale cabin, and it earned IIHS Top Safety Pick+ honors; but comparison tests often favored the Odyssey or Pacifica on refinement and seat flexibility, citing eCVT drone under load and non-removable second-row seats.
