The verdict
A struggling luxury wagon, strong on reliability and held back by technology.
The 2018 V60 Cross Country is the last year of Volvo's first-generation raised wagon: standard AWD, excellent front seats, Good IIHS crash scores and a solid reliability record for its year. Everything around that core has aged badly. There is no Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, the main screen is a 7-inch display you operate with knobs and buttons, most driver-assist tech was optional, and the rear seat (33.5 in of legroom) and cargo hold (15.2 cu ft) are small for a wagon. As a used buy it suits someone who wants a comfortable, snow-capable Volvo and doesn't need much space or modern tech. Shoppers who want both should look at the 2019-and-later redesign or a Subaru Outback.
Jump to scoresStrengths
- Some of the best front seats in the class
- Standard AWD and real gravel-road ability
- Strong reliability record for a run-out model
What holds it back
- Tech that was already behind in 2018
- Most safety tech was optional, and base headlights are Poor
- Small rear seat and cargo hold for a wagon

Detailed scoring by subject
1Performance & PowertrainGrades below the middle of the scale.1.10D
The 2018 V60 Cross Country is the final model year of the first generation, and in the US it came only as the T5 AWD with the 240-hp 2.0-liter Drive-E turbo four. That is adequate output, near the lower end of the wagon band.
The turbo four makes 258 lb-ft of peak torque from low rpm. That is respectable for a compact luxury wagon.
US spec listings give 6.6 seconds, sitting between Volvo's 6.4-second claim and a real-world 6.8 seconds measured with cargo aboard. That is brisk for a raised AWD wagon.
Reviewers call the 240-hp turbo four solid on power and acceleration, but the Drive-E four has a gruffer note than the five-cylinder it replaced. Its auto stop-start also gets some criticism for not being smooth.
The Aisin 8-speed automatic pairs well with the engine and shifts quickly. Reviewers report no meaningful hunting, though its manual mode is basic.
AWD is standard on every 2018 V60 Cross Country, using an on-demand Haldex-type system with Hill Descent Control and about 7.9 in of raised ride height. It has no terrain-mode selector, low range or torque vectoring.
In the US the 2018 V60 Cross Country was sold with one powertrain only: the T5 AWD 2.0L turbo with the 8-speed automatic. There was no hybrid, PHEV or higher-output option.
2Efficiency & RangeOne of the V60 Cross Country's weakest categories.0.30F
The EPA rates the 2018 V60 Cross Country T5 AWD at 25 MPG combined. That sits in the lower third of the gas wagon band.
The EPA city rating is 22 MPG. The car has no hybrid assist, and AWD is standard.
The EPA highway rating is 30 MPG, one less than the second-generation car.
The EPA record has no range figure for this gas model, so range is calculated from the first-generation car's 17.8-gallon tank and the 25 MPG combined rating: about 445 miles. That is better than the later V60 with its smaller tank.
The EPA estimates $2,700 a year in fuel at its standard assumptions, using regular gasoline as listed on the 2018 record. That is toward the expensive end of the wagon band.
The EPA lists regular gasoline for the 2018 T5. Volvo's Drive-E guidance recommends 91 AKI for best performance but allows 87 AKI, so there is no costly fuel requirement, though premium is suggested.
3SafetyOne of the V60 Cross Country's weakest categories.0.69F
NHTSA never crash-tested the first-generation V60 or V60 Cross Country. No overall rating exists for 2018 or for any earlier year of this generation.
Good in every IIHS crashworthiness test it was given, and a 2018 Top Safety Pick (not TSP+). The award applied only to cars with the optional HID headlights, and IIHS never ran the passenger-side small-overlap test on this generation.
Only low-speed City Safety autonomous braking is standard. Adaptive cruise, full-speed forward collision warning and auto brake, and lane departure warning are in the optional Technology package, and blind-spot and cross-traffic alerts are in the separate BLIS package.
The standard City Safety system rated only Advanced (2 mph speed reduction from 25 mph). The optional Collision Warning with Full Auto Brake rated Superior, but neither was rated for pedestrian detection.
BLIS and Cross Traffic Alert are optional (BLIS package) rather than standard, and they only alert; there is no steer-assist intervention on this older P3-platform car.
Lane departure warning and Lane Keeping Aid come only with the optional Technology package, and there is no lane centering at all. Lane Keeping Aid on this generation nudges the car only when it nears a lane line.
Adaptive cruise with Queue Assist (stop-and-go) is optional through the Technology package. There is no steering-assist highway mode, so it is a capable but dated ACC.
There is no hands-free driving option, and not even hands-on lane centering.
The standard halogen reflector headlights rated Poor at IIHS. Only the optional HID curve-adaptive projectors reached Acceptable, and that was the headlight the Top Safety Pick award required.
The raised Cross Country ride height and the wagon's tall seating help forward sightlines, but a sloping roofline, small rear glass and thick rear pillars limit the rear view. A rear camera and rear parking sensors are standard; there is no 360-degree camera option.
IIHS rated LATCH Acceptable, testing a Cross Country T5. Rear legroom and door openings on this compact first-generation wagon are tight for rear-facing seats.
4Space & ComfortOne of the V60 Cross Country's strongest categories.2.12C
The 2018 V60 Cross Country is a two-row, five-seat wagon. 2018 is the final US model year of the first-generation (P3-platform) car, a carry-over year before the SPA-based second generation.
38.7 in of front headroom is above the middle of the wagon band.
41.9 in of front legroom is mid-band for a wagon.
The wagon roofline gives reasonable rear headroom of 37.6 in.
33.5 in of rear legroom is near the bottom of the wagon band and tighter than the later SPA V60's 35.2 in. Edmunds calls rear legroom tight for full-size adults.
Volvo's figure of 15.2 cu ft behind the rear seats is small for a wagon and well behind the 2019+ V60's 23.2 cu ft. Cars.com lists 28/44 cu ft, likely measured to the roof, so the Volvo window-line figure is used.
The 40/20/40 rear seat with a fold-flat centre pass-through and Volvo's cargo-floor grocery holder are useful, but the floating centre stack leaves little console storage and the cargo hold is small. There is no onboard power beyond 12V sockets.
Reviewers repeatedly praise the front seats as very comfortable and supportive, a Volvo hallmark. The rear bench is limited by legroom.
Opinions are split: Edmunds says it rides rougher than expected for a small luxury wagon, while KSL found it smooth thanks to the long wheelbase. That lands it in the middle of the band, below the 2020 SPA car.
The cabin is reasonably hushed at highway speed for a compact luxury wagon, but the Drive-E four is gruffer than the five-cylinder it replaced and the taller tyres add some road roar. No decibel measurement was found.
Dual-zone automatic climate is standard, but heated front seats and a heated wheel cost extra, packaged with heated rear seats and a heated windshield in the Climate package. Ventilated seats and remote climate pre-conditioning were not offered.
5Cost of OwnershipMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.85C-
2018 is the final model year of the first-generation V60 Cross Country (the SPA-based second generation replaced it for 2019). The entry trim is the T5 AWD, which is the only US powertrain.
There were only two trims, the T5 AWD and the T5 AWD Platinum. Dealer stock was mostly the base T5 AWD with a Convenience or Blind Spot package, which comes to about $44,500. The Platinum at $46,695 sits above it.
CarEdge projects $3,682 in maintenance and repairs over five years for the V60 Cross Country nameplate. This is in line with the mechanically similar 2018 S60 T5 (Drive-E 2.0T, 8-speed). Volvo's three years of complimentary scheduled maintenance keeps the early years cheap.
CarEdge does not publish a figure for 2018, but its historical table shows the 2020–2021 V60 Cross Country holding about 56% after five to six years. CarEdge's nameplate projection is 44% depreciation, or 56% retained. A run-out first-generation model, superseded by an all-new design the following year, is estimated a few points lower.
Volvo's standard 4-year/50,000-mile new-car limited warranty applies, which is typical for the luxury segment.
Powertrain coverage is not extended beyond the basic warranty, so it sits at the bottom of the 5–10 year band.
Three years of complimentary factory scheduled maintenance plus 4 years of roadside assistance and 12-year corrosion coverage make this a solid multi-year package. It stops short of the top band because maintenance ends at 3 years and there are no further perks.
$44,500 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (52% retained, or about $23,140) leaves about $21,360 in depreciation. Add the projected $3,700 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $25,060 in total.
6Reliability & QualityThe V60 Cross Country's best-graded category.2.41C+
2018 is the last US model year of the first-generation (P3) V60 Cross Country. By then the platform was mature, and the Drive-E powertrain was in its third model year. Consumer Reports rates the 2018 V60 more reliable than other cars from the same model year, and owner reviews are strongly positive. AC compressor failures are the main complaint in CR's survey.
Over several years Volvo has ranked below the industry average for dependability, with electronics and infotainment faults as the main drivers. It ranks above Audi and Mercedes-Benz in J.D. Power's dependability study but sits in the lower half of Consumer Reports' brand rankings.
Only two NHTSA campaigns cover the 2018 V60 CC: a VCM software fix for e-call GPS, and a large fleet-wide replacement of front seat-belt anchor cables. The seat-belt cable recall is safety-relevant, but neither involves the powertrain or fire. This is fewer campaigns than the 2017 model year had (it also had door-latch recalls) or the 2019 launch year.
The 2018 T5 AWD uses the 240-hp 2.0L Drive-E turbo four with the Aisin 8-speed automatic and Haldex AWD. The transmission and AWD are mature, high-volume parts. The early Drive-E engines carry a known oil-consumption issue (piston rings) on some units, plus PCV and coolant-related complaints, which keeps this out of the proven-powertrain band.
The cabin uses quality leather, comfortable seats and solid switchgear, and reviewers call it upscale. By 2018, though, the dated button-heavy center stack and small Sensus screen trailed newer German and Volvo SPA interiors, which leaves it in the competitive band rather than class-leading.
As a late-cycle, Ghent-built product, it has a reputation for solid, consistent assembly, and owner reviews describe a tight, rattle-free car. Volvo's below-average J.D. Power quality standing (largely electronics) keeps it out of the top band.
Volvo has about 280 US retailers, a thinner network than BMW, Mercedes-Benz or Audi, and concentrated in coastal and metro markets. Service satisfaction is mid-pack among luxury brands. P3-platform mechanicals are well known to technicians.
Volvo repair costs are above the industry average but below the German brands. The P3 platform and Drive-E powertrain are shared with the high-volume S60, XC60 and V60, so aftermarket support is good. Cross Country-specific cladding and trim are dealer-only.
7Technology & InfotainmentThe V60 Cross Country's lowest-graded category.0.09F
The 2018 V60 Cross Country uses a 7-inch dash-top Sensus display, at the bottom of the wagon band. On this first-generation car it is driven by the centre-stack knobs and keypad rather than by touch.
The older Sensus system is functional, but reviewers criticise the small screen and the busy keypad-and-knob centre stack, which feels dated next to 2018 rivals. Menus are layered and slow to navigate.
Neither Apple CarPlay nor Android Auto was offered, wired or wireless, on the 2018 V60 Cross Country. Phone projection arrived only with the SPA-based 2019+ V60.
Sensus Connect navigation is fitted and Volvo On Call can send destinations from a phone, but voice control is basic command-and-control and the maps are dated with dealer/USB-only updates.
The standard eight-speaker system with CD player is adequate, and Harman Kardon premium audio is optional. It is a decent but unremarkable setup for the luxury class.
The P3 V60 uses Volvo's Adaptive Digital Display, a TFT gauge cluster with Elegance/Eco/Performance themes. It is configurable only by theme and is lower-resolution than modern full-digital clusters.
There is no over-the-air software updating; vehicle software and map updates go through the dealer or a USB download.
Volvo On Call provides remote lock/unlock, car locator, status checks, send-to-car navigation and emergency services. There is no digital key.
Device charging is limited to a USB-A port and aux input in the centre console plus 12V sockets. There is no USB-C, no wireless charging and no household outlet.
Keyless entry and push-button start are optional through the $1,500 Convenience package; the standard car uses a remote fob. A power liftgate is available, but phone-as-key is not.
Rear parking sensors are standard and a rear camera is fitted on most cars (via packages); front sensors come with the BLIS package. There is no 360-degree camera or automated parking.
No head-up display was offered on the first-generation V60 Cross Country.
8Use-Case FitGrades below the middle of the scale.1.48D
LATCH is rated Acceptable and the low wagon load floor helps with strollers, but 33.5 in of rear legroom and a small 15.2 cu ft cargo hold make rear-facing seats and family gear a squeeze.
Strong IIHS crashworthiness and a 2018 Top Safety Pick, but only with optional HID headlights. Full-speed AEB, adaptive cruise and blind-spot monitoring all cost extra, and there is no NHTSA rating.
Excellent front seats, but the tight rear bench, small cargo hold with seats up and optional-only rear heated seats limit it for four-plus occupants on long trips.
Comfortable seats, a slightly raised seating position and smooth 8-speed shifts make it an easy commuter, offset by noticeable low-rev turbo lag, a somewhat firm ride and the clunky infotainment controls.
25 MPG combined on premium fuel is ordinary for an AWD luxury wagon, and luxury-brand consumables keep running costs average to above-average.
The compact footprint and 37-ft turning circle make it easy to manoeuvre, but thick rear pillars and small rear glass limit the view out, and there is no 360-degree camera.
It can tow light loads (a factory hitch is available, about 3,300 lb in Volvo's rating) and carry modest cargo, but the small load bay makes it a light-duty tool at best.
The P3 platform is mature and the AWD system proven, but this is a leather-lined luxury wagon not built for hard use, with no fleet reputation.
Roof rails, cargo tie-down hooks and a dealer tow hitch are available, but there is no onboard power, no washable flooring and little upfit ecosystem.
Very comfortable front seats and stable highway manners suit long drives, but the firm ride, missing standard adaptive cruise and a 15.9-gal tank (roughly 400 miles at 25 MPG) keep it short of a top tourer.
Standard AWD, about 7.9 in of ground clearance, Hill Descent Control and roof rails make it a capable gravel-road and ski-trip wagon. It lacks terrain modes or low range.
The 40/20/40 split rear seat folds nearly flat and roof rails plus an available hitch help with bikes and skis, but total cargo of 43.8 cu ft is small for a wagon.
9Driving ExperienceOne of the V60 Cross Country's strongest categories.2.14C
Reviews are split: KSL found the handling impressive for a raised wagon, while Edmunds says cornering doesn't inspire much confidence and that it handles worse than the regular V60. Secure but unremarkable.
Three selectable steering weights; the medium setting is well weighted and direct, but the light setting is sloppy and the overall feel is numb next to German rivals.
No complaints about the brakes appear in reviews, but no instrumented stopping distance for the 2018 Cross Country was found, so it is scored near the segment norm.
The 240-hp turbo four is strong once on boost and the 8-speed shifts quickly, but low-rev turbo lag is noticeable and the auto stop-start is not smooth.
The Drive-E four is quiet at cruise but gruffer than the five-cylinder it replaced, and coarse when worked hard.
A 37-ft turning circle sits mid-band for a wagon.
The very comfortable, adjustable front seat and raised Cross Country stance give a good driving position, but the button-heavy floating centre stack and small screen are cluttered, and thick rear pillars hurt visibility.
Brisk acceleration and the novelty of a lifted wagon give it some character, but reviewers say it lacks the driver feel and sharpness of German sport wagons.
10Value & Market PositionGrades below the middle of the scale.1.32D
Standard equipment is competitive for a luxury wagon at about $42.8k: AWD, raised ride height, leather, a heated steering wheel, navigation and a HomeLink garage opener. However, blind-spot monitoring and Volvo's adaptive cruise and pilot-assist safety tech sit in option packages, as they did on the outgoing generation.
The value is fair rather than a bargain. It carries a roughly $10k premium over a well-equipped Subaru Outback for a similar raised AWD wagon formula, with less rear-seat and cargo room. Year-end discounts on the run-out model narrowed that gap in practice.
This is a take-it-or-leave-it lineup: one powertrain (T5 AWD) and two trims (T5 AWD and Platinum), with flexibility limited to option packages.
This was a niche seller in a shrinking US wagon market. The Cross Country was a small slice of modest V60 volume in the final year of an outgoing generation, and it was far outsold by the Outback and Volvo's own XC60.
Volvo's safety reputation and Scandinavian design give it a loyal following, and its wagon heritage is a real draw for this buyer. The brand still trails the German luxury marques in prestige and resale.
As the final-year model of a generation being replaced mid-2018, leftover inventory typically carried meaningful dealer discounts and Volvo lease and finance support. Buyers could negotiate well below MSRP without the model being in distress.
This is an aging generation with an imminent replacement. The first-generation V60 debuted in 2010, was facelifted in 2014, and was replaced by the SPA-based second generation for 2019, so a 2018 buyer got the last year of old P3-platform tech.
Reviews were decent but it was rarely the pick of the class. Critics praised the seats and style but faulted the ride, tight rear space and cargo room, and dated infotainment, and it won no major comparisons or awards.
