The verdict
A mixed-report luxury wagon, strong on safety and held back by ownership.
The 2024 V60 Cross Country is a lifted, all-wheel-drive luxury wagon built for comfortable long drives. It has some of the best front seats in the business, a quiet and well-made cabin, and a strong list of standard safety features. Owning one costs a lot, though. It starts at $51,695, keeps only about 38% of its value after five years, gets 27 MPG on premium fuel and has only 247 hp. Buy it for comfort and style on long trips, not as a cheap or sporty car.
Jump to scoresStrengths
- Road-trip comfort is the headline
- Strong safety ratings and standard driver aids
- Google built-in and premium audio
What holds it back
- Expensive to buy and heavy depreciation
- Thirsty on premium fuel
- Adequate power, not luxury power

Detailed scoring by subject
1Performance & PowertrainOne of the V60 Cross Country's weakest categories.1.33D
For 2024 the US V60 Cross Country is sold only as the B5 AWD (Plus and Ultimate trims), a 2.0L turbo four with a 48-volt mild-hybrid starter-generator rated 247 hp; the volume figure is also the range maximum.
Peak torque of the B5 powertrain is 258 lb-ft, delivered across a broad low-to-mid rpm plateau — adequate for a compact luxury wagon but not strong.
Volvo quotes about 6.4 seconds to 60 mph for the B5 Cross Country — brisk for a lifted AWD wagon but behind the quicker luxury wagons it is priced against.
The B5 is hushed at cruise and the 48V starter-generator makes stop/start restarts smooth, but there is perceptible turbo lag off the line and the four-cylinder sounds coarse when worked hard — a common criticism versus six-cylinder or smoother hybrid rivals.
The Aisin 8-speed automatic shifts smoothly once underway and settles into tall gears at cruise, but it is slow to kick down for passing and can be hesitant or lurchy at parking-lot speeds.
AWD is standard on every 2024 V60 Cross Country, paired with roughly 8 inches of ground clearance, an Off Road drive mode and hill descent control; it stops short of the top band because the on-demand front-biased system has no low range or torque vectoring.
In the US the 2024 Cross Country is a single-powertrain wagon — B5 mild hybrid only, no plug-in T8 Recharge, no higher-output version and no EV on this body. The 48V system lifts it slightly above a pure single-engine offering, but the buyer has no choice.
2Efficiency & RangeOne of the V60 Cross Country's weakest categories.0.16F
EPA rates the 2024 V60 Cross Country B5 AWD mild hybrid at 27 MPG combined — reasonable for a turbo-four AWD wagon but well short of hybrid rivals.
EPA city rating for the B5 AWD; the 48V system smooths stop/start and recovers some braking energy but cannot drive the car electrically, so city economy stays near conventional-turbo levels.
EPA highway rating for the B5 AWD; the tall eighth gear and low-slung wagon body help, but 31 MPG sits in the lower part of the wagon band.
Derived from the ~15.9-gallon (60 L) tank at the 27 MPG EPA combined rating — usable touring range, but well behind the Outback and hybrid Crown Signia.
fueleconomy.gov's annual fuel cost for the 2024 B5 AWD is $3,050 at 15,000 mi on premium — near the expensive end of the wagon band, driven by the premium-fuel listing as much as the economy.
EPA lists the B5 on premium and Volvo recommends 91 AKI, though the engine tolerates 87 with reduced output — a recommendation rather than a hard requirement, but still a running-cost penalty versus regular-fuel rivals like the Outback.
3SafetyThe V60 Cross Country's best-graded category.3.27B+
NHTSA rates the 2024 V60 Cross Country five stars overall; the frontal barrier result is four stars (passenger side), side and rollover are five.
Good in the tests IIHS has run on the 2024 model (small overlap, original moderate overlap) but the wagon has not been put through the updated side or updated moderate-overlap rear-passenger tests and carries no 2024 Top Safety Pick award.
City Safety AEB, lane keeping, run-off-road and oncoming-lane mitigation are standard Volvo-wide, and the 2024 US V60 Cross Country (B5 Plus / Ultimate) includes BLIS, Cross Traffic Alert and Pilot Assist adaptive cruise as standard.
City Safety earned Superior vehicle-to-vehicle and daytime pedestrian results for this generation, with a broad hazard set, but there is no published result under IIHS's newer higher-speed / night pedestrian protocols.
BLIS adds active steer-assist intervention and Cross Traffic Alert brakes autonomously when reversing — standard on the US trims, an intervention tier above alert-only rivals.
Pilot Assist gives real lane centering, but reviewers describe it as conservative — dropping out on faded lines and tighter curves — and Lane Keeping Aid interventions as abrupt.
Full-speed-range adaptive cruise with stop-and-go integrated with centering as Pilot Assist; marked down for cautious gap management and slow resume rather than missing capability.
No hands-free highway system is offered; Pilot Assist requires hands on the wheel.
IIHS rates the 2024 V60 Cross Country's headlights Good; full-LED lamps with Active Bending Lights and auto high beam are standard.
Wagon greenhouse and raised ride height give good sightlines; thick D-pillars and a high beltline cost some rear-quarter view, offset by BLIS and an available 360-degree camera.
IIHS rates the LATCH hardware Acceptable — workable but with some ease-of-use demerits — and the V60's rear door opening and legroom are tighter than crossover-shaped rivals.
4Space & ComfortOne of the V60 Cross Country's strongest categories.3.11B
The 2024 V60 Cross Country is a five-passenger, two-row wagon in both US trims (B5 AWD Plus and Ultimate); the second-generation SPA car has no jump seat.
37.4 in of front headroom is slightly below mid-band for a wagon, trimmed by the standard panoramic moonroof.
42.3 in of front legroom is generous; the front seats are not where this car is compromised.
The wagon roofline gives a healthy 38.1 in of second-row headroom, better than the related S60 sedan.
35.2 in of rear legroom is the car's clearest packaging weakness, shared with the S60 sedan and well short of the Outback (~39.5 in).
About 23.2 cu ft behind the second row clears the top of the wagon band, though it is less than an Outback's. Third-party listings disagree (18–25.5 cu ft depending on measurement method), so the Volvo-published figure is used.
Competitive but not innovative: modest center console and door bins up front, with the practicality concentrated in the load bay — underfloor bin, folding grocery-bag holder/divider and a 12V outlet in the cargo area. No onboard AC power.
Volvo's orthopedically shaped front seats with extendable cushions are a class benchmark for long trips; rear seats are comfortable but short on legroom.
The raised Cross Country suspension and taller sidewalls absorb rough roads well while staying controlled, a step behind air-sprung luxury rivals.
Well-isolated luxury cabin with little wind noise at speed; some road roar through the open wagon cargo bay and a coarse four-cylinder when worked hard.
Heated front seats, dual-zone climate, panoramic roof and app preconditioning are standard; the heated steering wheel and heated rear seats require the $750 Climate Package, and ventilated seats are an Ultimate feature.
5Cost of OwnershipThe V60 Cross Country's lowest-graded category.0.00F
For 2024 the US V60 Cross Country comes only as the B5 AWD mild hybrid in Plus and Ultimate trims, so the entry price is already above $50k — near the top of the $22,000–$55,000 wagon band.
Plus is the volume trim; typical dealer-stock cars add metallic paint and the Climate or wheel package, putting window-sticker price around $53,500 including destination.
KBB's five-year projection lands mid-to-upper band for a wagon — European luxury labor rates and repair exposure after the 4-year warranty, partly offset by Volvo covering the first three scheduled services.
Depreciation is the dominant cost of owning this wagon; KBB flags V60 resale as well below the segment average, and its five-year projection leaves the volume Plus trim worth under 40% of sticker.
Volvo's New Vehicle Limited Warranty is 4 years/50,000 miles — the luxury-class norm and a year longer than mainstream 3/36 coverage.
Volvo has no longer standalone powertrain coverage in the US, so the engine, 48V mild-hybrid system and transmission are covered only for the basic 4/50 term — the floor of the 5–10 year band and behind the Outback's and Crown Signia's 5/60.
MY2024 gas/mild-hybrid Volvos include the first three scheduled services (10k/20k/30k miles, 3 years) free, plus 4 years of unlimited-mileage roadside assistance and a connected-services period — multi-year included maintenance with meaningful perks. (Volvo later cut this to 2 yr/20k for MY2026.)
$53,500 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (38% retained, or about $20,330) leaves about $33,170 in depreciation. Add the projected $6,284 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $39,454 in total.
6Reliability & QualityOne of the V60 Cross Country's strongest categories.2.69C+
The 2024 V60 Cross Country is a mid-cycle carry-over of the 2019-onward SPA second generation with the B5 mild-hybrid drivetrain in its second US year, so it carries no first-year risk. Both major sources put it squarely average-to-fair rather than strong, with infotainment/electronics the recurring complaint rather than mechanicals.
Volvo has sat in the lower half to lower third of Consumer Reports' brand reliability rankings in recent years and below the industry average in J.D. Power's Vehicle Dependability Study — ahead of Audi and Mercedes-Benz but behind Subaru and the Japanese luxury brands. Electronics and infotainment, not drivetrain failures, drive the standing.
The 2024 model year itself carries a single safety issue on the NHTSA record — the fleet-wide rearview-camera software defect, filed as 25V282 and then re-remedied under 25V908 — fixed by an OTA/dealer software update. The broader SPA V60 generation has a typical European-luxury mix of software, seatbelt-retractor and minor assembly campaigns, nothing systemic on fire or the gas powertrain for this year.
The B5's 2.0L turbo four is Volvo's VEA/Drive-E family, in service since 2014, paired with the high-volume Aisin 8-speed automatic — a mature combination with no systemic failure pattern. It stops short of the top band because earlier Drive-E units drew oil-consumption/PCV complaints and the 48V integrated starter-generator added with the B-series is a newer subsystem with scattered reported failures.
Cabin materials are a consistent class-leading strength — open-pore wood, metal-mesh accents, quality leather and Volvo's crystal shifter on Ultimate — and reviewers routinely rank the V60 interior at or above German compact-luxury rivals for the price.
European-built on a mature line in the generation's sixth year, the V60 CC is reported as tightly assembled and rattle-free; the score is held below the mid-80s by Volvo's below-average J.D. Power initial-quality standing, though those demerits concentrate in infotainment rather than physical build.
Volvo's US network of roughly 280 retailers is one of the smaller luxury networks, thin outside metro areas; service satisfaction is mid-pack among luxury brands rather than a differentiator.
Volvo running costs sit above the industry average but below the German brands; mechanicals are shared with the high-volume XC60/S60, but the low-volume wagon's body, glass and trim parts are largely dealer-channel with a thin aftermarket.
7Technology & InfotainmentMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.66C+
The 2024 V60 Cross Country uses the 9-inch portrait SPA1 head unit on both trims — small next to the 12–14 in landscape screens of newer rivals.
Google built-in is quicker and smarter than the old Sensus system with excellent search, but the small portrait screen buries climate and vehicle settings in touch menus with few physical controls.
Apple CarPlay is available but wired-only on 2024 Google-built-in Volvos, and Android Auto is not offered (Android users get native Google apps instead). Some reviews claim wireless projection, but Volvo's support documentation and owner sources indicate a USB connection is required on this generation.
Native navigation is Google Maps with live traffic and Google Assistant handles natural-language destination, climate and media requests — among the best native systems at any price.
Harman Kardon premium audio is standard on the volume Plus trim and a Bowers & Wilkins system — one of the best factory systems — is available on Ultimate.
A 12.3-inch digital driver display is standard with Google Maps shown in the cluster; layouts are less configurable than Audi's or Mercedes'.
Google built-in cars receive OTA updates covering infotainment, apps and some vehicle software; not the feature-adding whole-vehicle cadence of Tesla or Rivian.
The Volvo Cars app covers remote lock/unlock, climate preconditioning/remote start, locate and send-to-car, included with the car; no full phone-as-key on this model.
USB-C ports front and rear and a wireless charging pad on the standard spec are adequate; no household AC outlet. One 2024 review reported no wireless pad on its test car, so availability is not fully confirmed.
Keyless entry and push-button start, power tailgate and app-based remote start are standard; hands-free foot-activated tailgate is available, no phone-as-key.
Rear camera and front/rear parking sensors are standard; the 360-degree camera comes on the Ultimate trim rather than the volume Plus.
A head-up display is offered only on the top Ultimate trim, not on the volume Plus.
8Use-Case FitMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.45C+
Low step-in, wide rear doors and a low liftover make kid and stroller loading easier than in an SUV, but 35.2 in of rear legroom tightens up with rear-facing seats.
City Safety AEB, lane keeping and Pilot Assist adaptive cruise with lane centering are standard on both trims, on Volvo's well-regarded SPA crash structure.
Benchmark front seats, a quiet cabin and ~23 cu ft of luggage space behind occupied rear seats; rear legroom and rear amenities (heated rear seats optional) are thin for the price.
Compliant ride, good visibility, smooth 48V mild-hybrid stop/start and Pilot Assist make traffic easy; touch-heavy climate controls are the main irritant.
27 MPG combined on premium fuel and luxury-brand maintenance make it average-to-pricey to commute in, behind an Outback or hybrid rivals.
Lower and shorter than the SUVs it competes with, with good sightlines; a 37.1 ft turning circle is mid-pack and the 360 camera is Ultimate-only.
A roughly 3,500 lb tow rating with an accessory hitch handles a small trailer, but modest cargo volume and a luxury cabin leave little real work headroom.
Leather-and-carpet luxury wagon with no wear-friendly upholstery and no fleet track record; not built for abuse.
Roof rails, cargo tie-downs, a 12V cargo outlet and Volvo's rack/hitch accessory catalogue — light-duty provisions only, with no onboard AC power.
The car's strongest suit: benchmark seats, a quiet and compliant ride, standard Pilot Assist and 31 MPG highway for good range between stops.
Standard AWD, about 8 in of ground clearance, an Off Road mode with hill descent control, roof rails and a ~3,500 lb tow rating make it a capable ski-trip and gravel-road wagon.
Long, low, square load floor with folding rear seats, underfloor storage, roof rails and an available hitch; total volume trails larger wagons and SUVs.
9Driving ExperienceMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.64C+
Lifted about 2.4 in on softer springs, the Cross Country corners securely and stays planted but trades the standard V60's tautness for compliance.
Accurate and easy to place, with selectable weighting, but light and largely devoid of feedback.
Brakes are strong and progressive for an all-season-shod luxury wagon; no 2024-specific instrumented stopping figure was found, so this rests on related B5 SPA-car tests.
The 48V mild-hybrid starter-generator makes stop/start nearly seamless and the 247 hp B5 delivers 0–60 in about 7 s, though the 8-speed can hesitate on tip-in.
Nearly silent at cruise, but the 2.0-liter four turns coarse and buzzy when worked hard — below what the luxury price implies.
A 37.1 ft turning circle is mid-pack for a wagon.
Broadly adjustable benchmark seats and a good wagon-height sightline; touchscreen-only climate and settings controls cost points.
The appeal is the lifted-wagon format and comfort rather than driving thrills — numb steering and a coarse four keep it pleasant but forgettable.
10Value & Market PositionMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.20C
The Plus trim ships with AWD, a panoramic sunroof, hands-free power liftgate, leather, heated 10-way memory front seats, remote start, dual-zone climate and Google built-in infotainment standard — content German rivals charge package money for.
At roughly $52k–$57k for 247 hp and compact-wagon space, content is good but the price-to-capability ratio is only fair — Volvo's own XC60 offers more room for less, and the Outback Wilderness does the lifted-wagon job for far less money.
Effectively take-it-or-leave-it: one powertrain (B5 mild hybrid), AWD only, and two trims (Plus, Ultimate) with options limited to paint, wheels and a few packages.
A niche seller in a shrinking body style — US V60/V60 Cross Country volume is a small fraction of Volvo's crossover-dominated sales and a tiny share of the luxury compact market.
Volvo's safety-and-Scandinavian-design image is positive and draws a loyal wagon following, but lacks the aspirational pull and resale strength of the German premium brands.
Slow-turning low-volume luxury wagons are highly negotiable, and Volvo Car Financial Services regularly ran subvented lease and APR offers on the 2024 lineup — real buyer benefit.
The second-generation SPA-based V60 dates to the 2019 model year, so 2024 is its sixth year; the 2023 switch to the B5 mild hybrid and Google built-in infotainment was mid-cycle freshening, with no redesign announced.
Reviewers consistently praise the comfort, design and rare lifted-wagon format while docking merely adequate power, touchscreen-heavy controls and price close to roomier crossovers — well-liked but seldom a comparison-test headliner.
