The verdict

A mixed-report luxury wagon, strong on safety and held back by efficiency.

The 2020 V60 Cross Country is a handsome lifted wagon with standard AWD. Its strengths are an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ rating with a 5-star NHTSA score, excellent front seats, a well-finished cabin and a 23.2 cu ft cargo bay that beats most of its class. The costs come from its single powertrain, a 250-hp turbo four that returns 25 MPG combined on recommended premium fuel ($3,300 a year by the EPA's estimate), and from a short 4-year/50,000-mile warranty. Rear legroom is tight at 35.2 in, and the fiddly Sensus touchscreen is wired-only for CarPlay and Android Auto. Buy one for safety, style and comfort, not for running costs or speed.

31/100
#6 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The 2020 US V60 Cross Country came only as the T5 AWD, a 250-hp 2.0L turbocharged four, so the volume figure is also the range maximum. 2020 is the second model year of the SPA-based second generation and a carry-over year for this powertrain.

Torque
258 lb-ft @ 1,500–4,800 rpm
42/100
#7 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The T5 makes 258 lb-ft over a broad plateau, which is mid-pack for a luxury wagon.

0–60 mph time
6.4 s (published figure, T5 AWD)
48/100
#7 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Published 0–60 figures for the 2020 T5 AWD Cross Country are about 6.4 seconds. That is adequate for a lifted wagon weighing about 4,000 lb, but it is not quick.

Powertrain refinement64
#8 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The T5 four is quiet at cruise and has adequate mid-range pull. Reviewers fault its turbo lag from a stop, its coarse note at high revs and an abrupt conventional auto stop/start system, which predates the later 48V mild hybrid.

Transmission behavior64
#8 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The Aisin 8-speed Geartronic shifts smoothly in steady driving. Reviewers say it is slow to kick down when you ask for passing power and that it sometimes hesitates at low speed.

AWD/4WD availability84
#2 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

AWD is standard on every 2020 V60 Cross Country, along with a raised ride height of about 8.1 inches, an Off Road drive mode and hill descent control. It misses the top band because the system is a front-biased on-demand setup with no low range or torque vectoring.

Powertrain lineup breadth22
#10 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

There is a single powertrain: the T5 AWD gas four, with no electrification. In 2020 the T6 and T8 plug-in hybrid were sold only on the regular V60, not the Cross Country.

NHTSA overall rating
5 stars overall (4-star frontal, 5-star side, 5-star rollover)
100/100
#1 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

NHTSA rates the 2020 V60 Cross Country T5 AWD at 5 stars overall. The frontal score is 4 stars because the passenger side rated 4; side and rollover are both 5 stars.

IIHS awards & crashworthiness86
#5 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The 2020 V60 Cross Country earned IIHS Top Safety Pick+, with Good ratings in every crashworthiness test; IIHS crash ratings for the V60 apply to 2019–21 models. It sits slightly below the 2021 car because 2020 headlight ratings vary by trim and build date.

Standard ADAS suite breadth66
#7 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

City Safety AEB, Lane Keeping Aid, BLIS and rear cross-traffic alert come on the T5 AWD Cross Country. Adaptive cruise and Pilot Assist are not standard: they are grouped with active headlights and the 360-degree camera in the optional Advanced Package.

Automatic emergency braking performance77
#7 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

IIHS rated the standard City Safety system Superior for vehicle-to-vehicle and Superior for daytime pedestrians. It has no nighttime pedestrian rating, which keeps it just under the top band.

Blind-spot & cross-traffic coverage80
#4 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

BLIS with Cross Traffic Alert is listed as standard on the 2020 Cross Country. Volvo's BLIS adds steer-assist intervention on SPA-platform cars, which goes beyond alert-only systems. Model-year equipment lists are less clear for 2020 than for 2021, so confidence is lower.

Lane keeping & centering68
#5 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Lane Keeping Aid is standard, but true lane centering through Pilot Assist is only in the optional Advanced Package. Reviewers find Lane Keeping Aid abrupt, and say Pilot Assist disengages readily when lane lines fade.

Adaptive cruise & highway assist66
#9 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Full-speed adaptive cruise with stop-and-go and Pilot Assist works well but is optional, through the Advanced Package. Reviewers also note cautious gap-keeping and slow resume.

Hands-free driving availability10
#3 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

There is no hands-free driving option. Pilot Assist requires hands on the wheel.

Headlight performance70
#4 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

For 2020 the IIHS headlight rating depends on equipment and build date. Base LED reflector lamps showed inadequate left-curve illumination, while the active bending lamps in the Advanced Package on cars built after May 2019 tested best. These lamps were good enough for TSP+, which required Good or Acceptable headlights standard, but trail the 2021 car.

Outward visibility72
#3 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The wagon's large rear glass and raised seating position give good natural sightlines. The thick D-pillars and high beltline are fully offset by the 360-degree camera only on cars with the optional Advanced Package; a rear camera is standard.

Child-seat (LATCH) usability64
#8 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

IIHS rated LATCH ease of use Acceptable on this generation. The compact-wagon rear doors and legroom are tighter than in crossover-shaped rivals.

37.4 in is below the midpoint of the wagon band. The panoramic sunroof is standard and takes up some headroom.

Front legroom

42.3 in of front legroom sits above the middle of the wagon band.

Rear headroom

78/100
#3 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The wagon roofline gives good rear headroom on paper. Consumer Guide still says the sloped roof squeezes taller outboard passengers.

Rear legroom
35.2 in
32/100
#7 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

35.2 in of rear legroom is tight for the class and well behind the Outback. Consumer Guide puts the comfortable limit at riders about 6 ft tall.

Cargo/trunk volume
23.2 cu ft behind rear seats; 50.9 cu ft folded
100/100
#1 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

23.2 cu ft behind the rear seats is above the top of the wagon band. The load floor is 71.7 in long with the seats folded.

In-cabin storage & clever solutions66
#2 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Storage is competitive for a premium wagon: a power liftgate, a 60/40 split rear seat with pass-through, a fold-up grocery-bag holder and an underfloor bin. Console storage is modest, there are only two USB ports and there is no onboard power.

Seat comfort86
#3 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Volvo's SPA front seats are repeatedly praised for long-distance support. The rear bench is comfortable but limited by legroom.

Ride quality74
#7 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The taller Cross Country suspension gives a good balance of ride and handling, but some testers found it busy, and sharp impacts come through on 19-inch wheels.

Cabin quietness76
#6 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Wind and road noise are well suppressed, with some intrusion above 70 mph. The T5 engine sounds grumbly at low speed.

Climate & comfort features70
#4 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Heated front seats, automatic climate control and a panoramic roof are standard. A heated steering wheel and heated rear seats are extra-cost options, and ventilated seats were not offered on the 2020 Cross Country.

5Cost of OwnershipOne of the V60 Cross Country's weakest categories.1.01D
Base MSRP
$46,095 (T5 AWD, $45,100 + $995 destination)
27/100
#5 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

For 2020 the US V60 Cross Country came as a single T5 AWD model, with content added through option packages. Its entry price sits in the upper third of the $22,000–$55,000 wagon band.

Volume-Trim Price
~$49,990 (T5 AWD with Advanced package, heated rear seats/wheel and metallic paint; ~$58k fully optioned)
24/100
#5 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

With only one trim, the typical dealer-stock car is the T5 AWD plus the Advanced package (Pilot Assist, 360° camera, LED headlights), the heated rear seats and steering wheel option, and metallic paint. That comes to about $50,000 including destination.

5-Year Maintenance & Repair Cost
~$5,800 over 5 years (maintenance + repairs)
49/100
#6 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

European luxury labor rates, plus repair exposure once the 4-year warranty ends, put the cost mid-band for a wagon. Free scheduled services for the first 3 years/36,000 miles offset part of that. The T5 powertrain is the same as in 2021.

5-Year Resale Value Retention
~48% retained at 5 years (est. ~$24,000 at 5 yr vs ~$50,000 typical sticker; ~$19,600 clean trade-in today at ~6.5 yr)
43/100
#4 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

At about 6.5 years old, a 2020 trades in for roughly 40% of its sticker price. Backing out about a year and a half of depreciation puts 5-year retention near 48%, below the 2021's figure, which benefited more from the used-car price spike.

Basic warranty
4 yr / 50,000 mi bumper-to-bumper
50/100
#2 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Volvo's New Vehicle Limited Warranty runs 4 years/50,000 miles, the luxury-class norm.

Powertrain warranty
4 yr / 50,000 mi (no separate extended powertrain term)
0/100
#6 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Volvo offers no separate, longer powertrain warranty in the US. The T5 engine and 8-speed automatic are covered only by the 4-year/50,000-mile basic term, the floor of the 5–10 year band.

Complimentary maintenance & perks80
#3 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The 2020 model includes Volvo's free factory scheduled maintenance for 3 years/36,000 miles (the 10k/20k/30k services), 4 years of unlimited-mileage roadside assistance, and a Volvo On Call connected-services subscription. That is multi-year included maintenance with meaningful perks.

Effective 5-Year Ownership Cost
$31,795 (≈$25,995 depreciation + $5,800 maintenance)
42/100
#5 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

$49,990 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (48% retained, or about $23,995) leaves about $25,995 in depreciation. Add the projected $5,800 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $31,795 in total.

6Reliability & QualityMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.28C
Predicted reliability60
#6 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The 2020 V60 Cross Country is the second US model year of the 2019-onward SPA second generation, a carry-over T5 AWD gas car. Sources disagree: Consumer Reports rates the 2020 V60 below average for its model year, while J.D. Power calls it average and owners rate it highly. Most complaints concern Sensus infotainment and electronics rather than mechanical parts.

Brand reliability track record48
#6 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Over several years Volvo has ranked below the industry average for dependability, mostly because of software and electronics faults on the shared SPA electrical architecture. It ranks above Audi and Mercedes-Benz in J.D. Power's Vehicle Dependability Study and sits in the lower half of Consumer Reports' brand rankings.

Recall & TSB history60
#4 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Three campaigns cover the 2020 V60 CC. One is a low-pressure fuel pump fuse that can blow and cause a stall. Another is a software/hardware incompatibility that can stop automatic emergency braking from detecting obstacles. The third is a steering-gear assembly defect that affects only a handful of cars. All are fixed with a cheap fuse swap, a software update or, rarely, a part replacement, and none involves fire. Still, a stall risk and an AEB fault keep the score in the lower part of the typical band.

Powertrain durability reputation74
#4 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The 2020 T5 AWD uses the conventional 250-hp 2.0L turbo four from the VEA/Drive-E family, in US service since 2014, with no hybrid hardware. It is paired with the high-volume Aisin 8-speed automatic, a mature combination with no systemic failure pattern. The score is reduced for oil-consumption complaints on earlier Drive-E units and for the 2019-2020 fuel-pump fuse recall.

Interior material quality86
#3 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The cabin is a clear strength: open-pore wood, quality leather, metal-mesh and jeweled-knob switchgear, and a minimalist Scandinavian design that reviewers rate at or above German compact-luxury rivals for the price. The main criticism is scratch-prone piano-black console trim.

Fit & finish76
#5 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Reviewers describe the Swedish/Belgian-built V60 CC as tightly assembled and solid, and there is no widespread pattern of rattles or misalignment. Volvo's below-average J.D. Power initial quality keeps it out of the top band, though those complaints are mostly about infotainment rather than physical build.

Dealer & service network60
#7 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Volvo has about 280 US retailers, a thinner network than BMW, Mercedes-Benz or Audi, and concentrated in coastal and metro markets. Service satisfaction is mid-pack among luxury brands. Because the car shares SPA mechanicals with the XC60 and S60, technicians know it well.

Parts availability & repair cost58
#4 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Volvo repair costs are above the industry average but below the German brands. Mechanical parts are shared with the high-volume XC60 and S60. Body, glass and trim parts for this low-volume wagon are mostly dealer-only, and SPA electronic modules need dealer software commissioning.

7Technology & InfotainmentMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.93C-
Touchscreen size

24/100
#5 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The 9-in portrait Sensus touchscreen is the only center display on the 2020 Cross Country, which is offered in a single trim.

Infotainment UX & responsiveness55
#6 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Sensus looks good and works with gloves, but its menu layers are complex and swipes do not always register. Most controls are buried in the screen.

Wireless CarPlay / Android Auto58
#3 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are supported, but only over a cable. Wireless projection was not offered.

Voice control & native navigation60
#4 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Sensus Navigation and the built-in voice control work but rely on rigid commands. Most owners use phone projection instead. It is well short of the Google built-in system that arrived later.

Audio system quality82
#3 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The base system is adequate. A 14-speaker Harman Kardon system is available, and Bowers & Wilkins is the top option. The B&W is excellent but costly.

Digital instrument cluster80
#3 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

A 12.3-in fully digital driver display is standard and crisp. It is less configurable than the best German clusters.

OTA update capability40
#6 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Sensus-era Volvos received map updates and some software updates via connectivity, but the infotainment and vehicle software were mostly updated at the dealer. There were no feature-adding OTA updates.

Companion app & remote functions66
#3 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The Volvo On Call app offers remote lock and unlock, vehicle location, pre-conditioning and remote start. It is clunky, and there is no phone-as-key.

Charging ports & device power48
#9 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Only two USB ports are standard, and wireless charging appears only in option content. There are no USB-C ports and no household outlet.

Keyless & remote access72
#4 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Keyless entry, push-button start and a power liftgate are standard. Remote start is available through Volvo On Call. The hands-free liftgate is optional, and there is no phone-as-key.

Camera & parking aids66
#5 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

A rear camera and parking sensors are standard. The 360-degree camera is in the $2,500 Advanced Package, and Park Assist Pilot automated parking is optional.

Head-up display availability70
#2 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

A head-up display is available on the single trim through the $2,500 Advanced Package, so it is reachable on the volume car but not standard.

8Use-Case FitMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.15C
Kid & car-seat practicality65
#3 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The low load height and 23.2 cu ft cargo bay suit strollers. 35.2 in of rear legroom crowds rear-facing seats, and only the two outboard positions have full LATCH.

Family safety package80
#4 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The car earned an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ and an NHTSA 5-star overall rating, and AEB is standard. Pilot Assist, the 360 camera and the better headlights cost extra in the Advanced Package.

Family road-trip comfort68
#5 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Supportive seats, a quiet cabin and ample luggage space help on long trips. Limited rear legroom, optional heated rear seats and only two USB ports hold it back with four aboard.

Daily driving ease70
#7 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

It is comfortable and easy to drive, but turbo lag from a stop, an abrupt stop/start system and a fiddly Sensus touchscreen make daily driving a little harder.

Commuting cost efficiency42
#8 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

25 MPG combined on premium fuel and an estimated $3,300 a year in fuel make it expensive to commute in for a compact wagon.

Parking & maneuverability68
#2 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

A 37.1-ft turning circle and a modest footprint make it easy to place. The 360 camera is optional rather than standard.

Work capability42
#1 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The long, flat 71.7-in load floor helps, but a modest tow rating of about 3,500 lb and its luxury focus make it a light-duty helper at best.

Durability for work duty40
#2 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

It is a leather-lined luxury wagon with no fleet or work reputation, so its durability under hard use is unproven.

Jobsite & upfit practicality40
#1 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Cargo tie-downs, roof rails and an accessory hitch are available, but there is no onboard power and no work upfit ecosystem.

Long-distance comfort & range78
#7 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Excellent seats and a quiet cabin make it a strong highway cruiser. Range is about 398 miles, and Pilot Assist costs extra in the Advanced Package.

Outdoor & adventure capability70
#1 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Standard AWD, about 8 in of ground clearance, roof rails and an Off Road mode with hill descent control handle gravel and trailheads, though it is not a true off-roader.

Gear & luggage flexibility70
#2 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

A long wagon floor, a split-folding rear seat, roof rails and an available hitch fit bikes and skis, but 50.9 cu ft of maximum space trails the Outback and SUVs.

9Driving ExperienceOne of the V60 Cross Country's strongest categories.2.35C+
Handling & agility72
#4 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

It corners securely and stays balanced, with good grip for a lifted wagon. The tuning favours comfort over sport.

Steering feel60
#6 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Steering is quick with good on-center stability, but it feels light in the default mode. Dynamic mode adds weight and some feedback.

Braking confidence70
#5 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The brakes are strong and predictable, and Dynamic mode sharpens the response. No instrumented stopping data for the 2020 Cross Country was found.

Powertrain smoothness & response62
#9 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The T5 pulls well once on boost, but it lags from a stop, its stop/start system is abrupt without mild-hybrid assist, and the 8-speed is slow to kick down.

Drivetrain noise & vibration60
#9 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The engine is quiet at cruise but sounds grumbly at low speed and coarse when worked hard.

Turning circle
37.1 ft curb-to-curb
48/100
#3 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

A 37.1-ft turning circle is mid-pack for the wagon band.

Driving position & ergonomics70
#5 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The supportive, adjustable seat and slightly raised Cross Country seating position give a good driving position, but many functions are buried in the Sensus touchscreen.

Fun-to-drive factor62
#4 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

It is a composed, characterful lifted wagon, but light default steering and a grumbly four-cylinder keep it from being an enthusiast pick.

10Value & Market PositionMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.19C
Standard equipment generosity70
#7 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The single 2020 T5 AWD trim comes with standard AWD, a panoramic moonroof, a power tailgate, leather heated front seats, the 9-inch Sensus touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, and City Safety AEB. Pilot Assist adaptive cruise, the 360° camera, LED headlights, four-zone climate and ventilated seats cost extra through the Advanced, Cross Country Pro and Luxury packages.

Feature value per dollar64
#7 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

At about $46,100 with standard AWD and a lifted wagon body, it undercuts the Audi A4 allroad and Mercedes E-Class All-Terrain. Even so, adaptive cruise is a $2,500 option, it asks luxury money for 250 hp and compact-wagon space, and a Subaru Outback XT offers similar capability for far less.

Trim & configuration breadth35
#9 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Buyers take it or leave it: one trim, one powertrain (the T5 gas four), AWD only. The only real choices are four option packages, paint and the Bowers & Wilkins audio upgrade. Buyers wanting other powertrains had to step to the non-Cross Country V60.

Sales popularity & market acceptance32
#8 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

This is a niche seller in a shrinking body style. V60 Cross Country volume was under 2,000 US units in 2020, during the pandemic, while Volvo's XC60 and XC90 crossovers absorbed most of the brand's demand.

Brand desirability & image74
#6 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Volvo has a positive premium image built on safety leadership and Scandinavian design, with a loyal following among wagon buyers. It lacks the aspirational pull and resale strength of the German luxury leaders.

Deals & incentive availability62
#8 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

In 2020, before the chip shortage, a slow-turning luxury wagon saw real dealer discounting. Volvo Car Financial also ran pandemic-era APR and payment-deferral programs, so the buyer benefit was better than in supply-constrained 2021.

Model freshness72
#3 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The second-generation V60 on SPA went on sale in 2018, and the Cross Country reached the US for the 2019–2020 model years, so the 2020 car was nearly new with current platform and safety tech. The B5 mild-hybrid powertrain followed in 2022–2023.

Critical reception & awards70
#6 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Reviewers praised its styling, ride, seats and the rarity of a lifted luxury wagon. They criticized modest power, the laggy touchscreen-centric Sensus interface and pricey option packages. It was well liked but rarely the pick of a comparison test.
