The verdict

A mixed-report luxury wagon, strong on safety and held back by efficiency.

The 2023 V60 Cross Country is a lifted, all-wheel-drive luxury wagon that does safety, comfort and cabin quality very well. It earns a 5-star NHTSA rating, has some of the best seats in the class, and fits 23.2 cu ft of cargo behind the rear seats. You pay for that in other ways: about $50,000 to start, 26 MPG on premium fuel, only 247 hp, and steep depreciation (around 41% of its value kept after five years). It's a good fit if you want a refined, safe and quietly stylish alternative to a crossover, and a poor one if running costs or rear-seat space come first.

Jump to scores

  • Adequate power, unremarkable acceleration

#9 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

For 2023 the US V60 Cross Country moved from the T5 to the B5 mild-hybrid powertrain (2.0L turbo four plus a 48-volt integrated starter-generator), rated 247 hp. It is the only engine offered on the Cross Country, so the volume figure is also the range maximum.

Torque
258 lb-ft
42/100
#9 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Peak torque of the B5 is 258 lb-ft over a broad mid-range plateau; the 48V system adds a small low-rpm assist rather than a sustained increase.

0–60 mph time
6.4 s (Volvo claim; third-party listings 6.4–7.1 s)
48/100
#10 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Volvo quotes about 6.4 seconds to 60 mph for the B5 Cross Country; other published figures range up to 7.1 s. Either way it is adequate for a lifted luxury wagon but well behind performance-oriented rivals.

Powertrain refinement70
#8 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The new 48V belt starter-generator makes auto stop/start restarts much smoother than the outgoing T5, and the engine is quiet at cruise. Reviewers still note some off-boost hesitation from a stop and a coarse four-cylinder note when it is worked hard, which is a weakness in a segment where some rivals offer sixes.

Transmission behavior64
#10 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The 8-speed Geartronic automatic is smooth in steady driving, but reviewers fault it for slow kickdowns when you ask for power and for occasional low-speed hesitation or lurch.

AWD/4WD availability84
#2 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

AWD is standard on every 2023 V60 Cross Country (B5 AWD Plus and Ultimate). It comes with about 8.1 inches of ground clearance, an Off Road drive mode and hill descent control. It misses the top band because the system is a front-biased on-demand setup with no low range or torque vectoring.

Powertrain lineup breadth30
#10 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

There is one powertrain: the B5 AWD mild hybrid on both trims. The T8 Recharge plug-in hybrid was sold only on the regular V60 wagon, not the Cross Country. The 48V system lifts it slightly above a plain single-engine car, but buyers have no real choice.

2Efficiency & RangeThe V60 Cross Country's lowest-graded category.0.00F
Combined fuel economy
26 MPG combined (B5 AWD, only powertrain)
33/100
#6 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The EPA rates the 2023 V60 Cross Country B5 AWD at 26 MPG combined, slightly better than the earlier non-hybrid T5 thanks to the 48V system. That is still mediocre against the gas wagon band.

City fuel economy
23 MPG city
32/100
#6 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The EPA city rating is 23 MPG. The mild-hybrid ISG helps with stop/start and recovers some braking energy, but it cannot drive the car on electricity.

Highway fuel economy
30 MPG highway
29/100
#9 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The EPA highway rating is 30 MPG, only modestly above the floor of the wagon band.

Driving range
413 mi (EPA total range)
32/100
#7 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The EPA lists 413 miles of total range on a tank: usable, but well short of the longer-legged hybrids in the segment.

Estimated annual fuel cost
$3,150/yr (EPA, premium fuel)
2/100
#9 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The EPA's annual fuel-cost estimate is $3,150, based on the premium fuel the B5 calls for and the high fuel prices used for the 2023 listing. That puts it near the expensive end of the wagon band.

Fuel requirements52
#6 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The EPA lists the fuel type as premium, and Volvo recommends 91 AKI for the B5 while allowing 87 AKI at reduced output. Premium is recommended rather than strictly required, which puts it in the middle band. It is still a real ongoing cost compared with regular-fuel rivals, and there is no plug-in option.

3SafetyThe V60 Cross Country's best-graded category.3.34B+
NHTSA overall rating
5 stars overall (4-star frontal, 5-star side, 5-star rollover)
100/100
#1 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

NHTSA rates the 2023 V60 Cross Country B5 AWD at 5 stars overall. The frontal score is 4 stars because the passenger side rated 4; side and rollover are both 5 stars.

IIHS awards & crashworthiness74
#9 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Every crashworthiness test IIHS ran on this generation came back Good, and the 2022 car earned TSP+. For 2023 the award criteria required the updated side test, which IIHS never ran on the V60, so the 2023 car has no award. The child-seat anchors rated only Acceptable.

Standard ADAS suite breadth88
#4 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The base Plus trim comes with the full suite: City Safety AEB, adaptive cruise with Pilot Assist, lane keeping, BLIS with cross-traffic alert, oncoming lane mitigation and a 360-degree camera. Nothing important is held back for the Ultimate trim.

Automatic emergency braking performance77
#8 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

IIHS rated the standard City Safety system Superior for vehicle-to-vehicle and Superior for daytime pedestrians. It has no nighttime pedestrian rating, which keeps it just under the top band.

Blind-spot & cross-traffic coverage84
#4 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

BLIS and Cross Traffic Alert are standard on both 2023 trims. Volvo's BLIS adds steer-assist intervention and Cross Traffic Alert can brake on its own, which goes beyond the alert-only systems most rivals use.

Lane keeping & centering73
#5 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Pilot Assist provides real lane centering and is standard. Reviewers say it hands control back readily when lane lines fade or curves tighten, and they find Lane Keeping Aid abrupt when it steps in.

Adaptive cruise & highway assist77
#6 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Full-speed adaptive cruise with stop-and-go is paired with lane centering under one Pilot Assist control, and it is standard. Points come off for cautious gap-keeping and slow resume behavior.

Hands-free driving availability10
#8 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

There is no hands-free driving option. Pilot Assist requires hands on the wheel.

Headlight performance86
#2 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Every trim gets the same headlamps: LED reflectors with curve-adaptive bending and high-beam assist. IIHS rated them Good with no excessive glare.

Outward visibility80
#1 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The wagon's large rear glass and higher seating position give good natural sightlines. The thick D-pillars and high beltline are offset by a standard 360-degree camera and parking sensors on all sides.

Child-seat (LATCH) usability64
#11 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

IIHS rated LATCH ease of use Acceptable. There are two full LATCH positions plus a tether-only center seat, and the compact-wagon rear doors and legroom are tighter than in crossover-shaped rivals.

4Space & ComfortOne of the V60 Cross Country's strongest categories.3.03B
Seating capacity
5 seats
100/100
#1 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Two-row, five-passenger wagon in both 2023 trims (B5 AWD Plus and Ultimate); no jump seat on the SPA-generation V60.

Front headroom
37.4 in (panoramic moonroof standard)
35/100
#9 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

37.4 in is below the wagon midpoint; the standard panoramic roof eats into headroom, and SlashGear notes headroom is reduced versus the XC60.

Front legroom
42.3 in
57/100
#4 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Front legroom of 42.3 in is comfortably above the middle of the wagon band; front space is not a weak point.

Rear headroom
38.1 in (Cars.com lists 38 in)
78/100
#1 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The wagon roofline carries well rearward, so second-row headroom is good for the class.

Rear legroom
35.2 in
32/100
#9 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

35.2 in of rear legroom is tight for the price class and well behind the Outback's ~39.5 in; adults fit but not generously. SlashGear calls legroom 'adequate'.

Cargo/trunk volume
23.2 cu ft behind the rear seats (sources range 18–23.2 by measurement method); ~50–60 cu ft folded
100/100
#1 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Volvo's commonly cited 23.2 cu ft behind the rear seats tops the wagon band; even Cars.com's more conservative 18 cu ft would score well.

In-cabin storage & clever solutions68
#3 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Competitive premium-wagon storage: power liftgate, 60/40 folding rear seat with pass-through, grocery-bag holder and underfloor cargo bin, plus a wireless charging pad. Nothing innovative, and console storage is modest.

Seat comfort86
#3 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Volvo's SPA front seats are repeatedly praised for long-haul support; reviewers single out the 'beautifully contoured seats'. The rear bench is supportive but limited by legroom.

Ride quality78
#5 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Taller Cross Country suspension rides comfortably and stays balanced, though reviewers note occasional stiffness over sharper bumps.

Cabin quietness78
#7 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Cabin isolates road and wind noise well for a luxury wagon; the four-cylinder gets coarse under hard throttle.

Climate & comfort features78
#6 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Heated front seats, dual-zone automatic climate and panoramic roof are standard; ventilated front seats and heated rear seats/wheel come with the Ultimate or the Climate package rather than standard.

5Cost of OwnershipOne of the V60 Cross Country's weakest categories.0.38F
Base MSRP
$49,895 (B5 AWD Plus, $48,800 + $1,095 destination)
15/100
#4 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

For 2023 the US V60 Cross Country comes only as the B5 AWD mild hybrid in Plus and Ultimate trims. That puts the entry price near $50k, close to the top of the $22,000–$55,000 wagon band.

Volume-Trim Price
~$51,500 (Plus as typically equipped; Ultimate from $55,195)
19/100
#4 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Plus is the volume trim. Typical dealer-stock cars add metallic paint plus the Climate or wheel package, which puts the window sticker around $51,500 including destination.

5-Year Maintenance & Repair Cost
~$6,000 over 5 years (maintenance ~$3,700 + repairs ~$2,300)
46/100
#6 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

European luxury labor rates and repair exposure after the 4-year warranty put it mid-band for a wagon. Volvo covering the first three scheduled services offsets part of that.

5-Year Resale Value Retention
~41% retained at 5 years (53% at 3 years per KBB)
20/100
#9 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Depreciation is the largest cost of owning this wagon. KBB places the 2023 V60 in the worst quartile of 2023 wagons for depreciation, and projecting from 53% retained at three years gives roughly 40% at five.

Basic warranty
4 yr / 50,000 mi bumper-to-bumper
50/100
#2 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Volvo's New Vehicle Limited Warranty runs 4 years/50,000 miles. That is the luxury-class norm and a year longer than mainstream 3-year/36,000-mile coverage.

Powertrain warranty
4 yr / 50,000 mi (no separate extended powertrain term)
0/100
#7 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Volvo offers no separate, longer powertrain warranty in the US. The engine, 48V mild-hybrid system and transmission are covered only for the basic 4-year/50,000-mile term, the floor of the 5–10 year band.

Complimentary maintenance & perks80
#2 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

MY2023 gas and mild-hybrid Volvos include the first three scheduled services free (10k/20k/30k miles, within 3 years). They also get 4 years of unlimited-mileage roadside assistance and a trial of connected services. That is multi-year included maintenance with meaningful perks.

Effective 5-Year Ownership Cost
$36,385 (≈$30,385 depreciation + $6,000 maintenance)
29/100
#5 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

$51,500 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (41% retained, or about $21,115) leaves about $30,385 in depreciation. Add the projected $6,000 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $36,385 in total.

6Reliability & QualityMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.57C+
Predicted reliability63
#6 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The 2023 V60 Cross Country sits in the fifth year of the 2019-onward SPA second generation, but it is the first US model year in which the B5 48V mild-hybrid replaced the conventional T5 (per Wikipedia), so it carries a little new-subsystem risk. Consumer Reports rates it about average; electronics/infotainment rather than mechanicals are the recurring complaint.

Brand reliability track record57
#7 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Volvo has sat in the lower half of Consumer Reports' brand reliability rankings and below the industry average in J.D. Power's Vehicle Dependability Study in recent years — ahead of Audi and Mercedes-Benz but behind Subaru and the Japanese luxury brands, with electronics driving the standing.

Recall & TSB history70
#3 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The 2023 V60 CC carries more campaigns than the 2024 — three distinct safety issues, all software-remedied: a BCM2 fault that could drop ABS/ESC/traction control, a false e-call service warning, and the fleet-wide rearview-camera defect (filed twice). Nothing fire- or engine-hardware-related, but the brake-control fault keeps it out of the upper band.

Powertrain durability reputation70
#5 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The B5's 2.0L turbo four belongs to Volvo's VEA/Drive-E family (in service since 2014) and is paired with the high-volume Aisin 8-speed automatic — a mature combination with no systemic failure pattern. Held below the 2024 score because 2023 was the 48V integrated starter-generator's first US year in this car, and earlier Drive-E units drew oil-consumption complaints.

Interior material quality88
#2 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The cabin is a consistent class-leading strength — open-pore wood, metal-mesh accents, quality leather and a minimalist Scandinavian design — and reviewers rate it at or above German compact-luxury rivals for the price.

Fit & finish79
#5 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

European-built on a mature SPA line, the V60 CC is reported as tightly assembled and rattle-free; Volvo's below-average J.D. Power initial-quality standing holds it under the low 80s, though those demerits concentrate in infotainment rather than physical build.

Dealer & service network67
#7 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Volvo's US network of roughly 280 retailers is one of the smaller luxury networks and thin outside metro areas; service satisfaction is mid-pack among luxury brands.

Parts availability & repair cost60
#4 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Volvo running costs sit above the industry average but below the German brands; mechanicals are shared with the high-volume XC60/S60, but the low-volume wagon's body, glass and trim parts are largely dealer-channel with a thin aftermarket.

7Technology & InfotainmentOne of the V60 Cross Country's strongest categories.2.64C+
Touchscreen size
9.0 in portrait (only size offered)
24/100
#8 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The 9-in portrait center display is the only screen on both 2023 trims, small next to rivals' 11–12 in units.

Infotainment UX & responsiveness66
#9 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The Google built-in (Android Automotive) system adopted for the SPA cars is quicker than Volvo's old Sensus, but nearly all climate controls live on the touchscreen and reviewers report a learning curve.

Wireless CarPlay / Android Auto52
#8 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Apple CarPlay works but connects by cable only, and Android Auto is not offered on the Google built-in system (native Google apps stand in for it).

Voice control & native navigation90
#1 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Native Google Assistant and Google Maps, with four years of Google services included, are among the best embedded voice and navigation available in 2023.

Audio system quality84
#5 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Base 10-speaker system is decent; Harman Kardon is available and the Ultimate offers the excellent Bowers & Wilkins upgrade ($3,200).

Digital instrument cluster82
#4 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

A 12.3-in full digital driver display is standard on both trims, crisp though less configurable than the best German clusters.

OTA update capability72
#6 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The Google built-in infotainment receives over-the-air software and app updates, but whole-vehicle feature-adding OTA on the SPA cars is limited compared with newer Volvo EVs.

Companion app & remote functions74
#7 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The Volvo Cars app offers remote lock, locate, climate pre-conditioning and remote start via the connected-services package; no phone-as-key on this generation.

Charging ports & device power72
#4 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Four USB-C ports across the rows and wireless charging listed as standard, but no household AC outlet; wireless-charging availability was spotty during 2023 supply constraints.

Keyless & remote access74
#7 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Push-button start and power liftgate standard; full keyless entry and hands-free liftgate tied to option packages/Ultimate; remote start via app, no phone-as-key.

Camera & parking aids82
#2 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

360-degree surround camera and front/rear/side Park Assist are standard on the volume Plus trim; no automated parking.

Head-up display availability66
#4 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

A good head-up display is offered, but only on the Ultimate trim, not the volume Plus.

Kid & car-seat practicality66
#3 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Low-ish load height and a usable 23 cu ft cargo bay suit strollers, but 35.2 in of rear legroom crowds rear-facing seats and IIHS rates LATCH only Acceptable.

Family safety package82
#3 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

NHTSA 5-star overall with Good IIHS crashworthiness and a broad standard ADAS suite (Pilot Assist, AEB, BLIS, 360 camera) on the volume Plus trim.

Family road-trip comfort70
#6 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Excellent seats, quiet cabin and ample luggage space, but limited rear legroom and rear-seat heating only in a package hold back four-adult trips.

Daily driving ease74
#8 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Smooth, linear power and a comfortable ride make it easy to live with; the touch-heavy controls and occasional 8-speed hesitation are minor annoyances.

Commuting cost efficiency45
#8 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

26 MPG combined on premium fuel puts commuting costs at the expensive end for a compact wagon; luxury-brand consumables add to it.

Parking & maneuverability72
#1 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

A 37-ft turning circle and standard 360 camera with all-round Park Assist make a ~188-in wagon easy to place in town.

Work capability42
#2 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

A long, flat wagon load floor helps, but a modest tow rating (about 3,500 lb) and luxury orientation make it a light-duty helper at best.

Durability for work duty40
#2 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Leather-lined luxury wagon with no fleet or work reputation; durability under hard use is unproven.

Jobsite & upfit practicality40
#2 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Cargo tie-down hooks, roof rails and an accessory hitch exist, but no onboard power outlets or work-focused upfit ecosystem.

Long-distance comfort & range82
#6 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Superb seats, a quiet cabin and standard Pilot Assist make it a strong mile-eater; 413-mile EPA range is adequate rather than long.

Outdoor & adventure capability70
#2 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Standard AWD, ~8.1 in of ground clearance, roof rails and an off-road/hill-descent mode handle gravel and trailheads, though it is not a true off-roader.

Gear & luggage flexibility70
#2 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Long wagon floor, 60/40 split with pass-through, roof rails and hitch availability fit bikes and skis, but max volume trails the Outback and SUVs.

10Value & Market PositionMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.21C
Standard equipment generosity78
#3 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The 2023 Plus trim is well stocked for a luxury wagon. Standard equipment includes AWD, the new B5 mild-hybrid powertrain, a panoramic moonroof, heated front seats, a power tailgate, a 12.3-inch driver display, Google built-in infotainment and the full Pilot Assist / City Safety driver-assist suite. German rivals typically sell much of that as four-figure packages.

Feature value per dollar64
#7 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

At $49,895 to start, standard AWD, a generous feature list and a lifted wagon body are fair value against the Audi A4 allroad and Mercedes E-Class All-Terrain. It still asks luxury money for 247 hp and compact-wagon space, and an Outback XT delivers similar capability for far less.

Trim & configuration breadth42
#9 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Buyers essentially take it or leave it. There is one powertrain (the B5 mild hybrid), AWD only, and a two-step Plus/Ultimate ladder whose options are mostly wheels, paint and a Climate package. There is no entry point below about $50k.

Sales popularity & market acceptance32
#9 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

This is a niche seller in a shrinking body style. US V60 Cross Country volume runs in the low thousands per year, while the crossovers buyers cross-shop sell in the six figures and Volvo's own XC60 and XC90 absorb most of the brand's demand.

Brand desirability & image74
#6 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Volvo has a positive premium image built on safety leadership and Scandinavian design, with a loyal following that suits this wagon's buyer. It lacks the aspirational pull and resale strength of the German luxury leaders.

Deals & incentive availability58
#10 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

In the 2023 model year, inventory across the industry was still recovering from the chip shortage, so discounts were thinner than usual. A slow-turning luxury wagon still saw some negotiability and Volvo Car Financial lease and APR support, but the deals were modest.

Model freshness55
#5 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The second-generation V60 dates to the 2019 model year on the SPA platform, so 2023 is its fifth year. The 2023 changes were real mid-cycle updates: the B5 mild-hybrid powertrain replaced the T5, and Google built-in infotainment arrived. It is current but not cutting-edge, with no imminent replacement.

Critical reception & awards70
#8 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Reviewers consistently praise the seats, ride quality, interior design and the rarity of a lifted luxury wagon. They mark it down for adequate-only B5 power, infotainment that buries common functions, and a price close to roomier crossovers. It is well liked but seldom the pick of a comparison test.
