The verdict
A mixed-report luxury wagon, strong on safety and held back by efficiency.
The 2022 V60 Cross Country is a lifted, all-wheel-drive Volvo wagon with standout safety (5-star NHTSA, IIHS Top Safety Pick+), some of the best front seats in the class and a beautifully finished cabin. It is the last year of the plain 250-hp T5 engine, which means only 25 MPG combined on premium fuel, about $3,300 a year at the pump, and acceleration that is adequate rather than quick. At about $47,300 to start, it suits a buyer who wants a safe, comfortable, upscale wagon more than speed or low running costs. Shoppers buying used should check whether the car has the $1,900 Advanced Package, which adds adaptive cruise and the 360-degree camera.

Detailed scoring by subject
1Performance & PowertrainOne of the V60 Cross Country's weakest categories.1.22D
For 2022 the US V60 Cross Country still came only as the T5 AWD, a 250-hp 2.0L turbocharged four with no electrification, so the volume figure is also the range maximum. The 2022 change was to trim names (Core/Plus/Ultimate), not the powertrain; the B5 mild hybrid arrived for 2023.
The carry-over T5 makes 258 lb-ft of peak torque, which is mid-pack for a luxury wagon.
With an unchanged powertrain and a curb weight of about 4,030 lb, the 2022 T5 Cross Country runs 0–60 in about 6.4 seconds. That is adequate but not quick for the class.
The T5 four is quiet at cruise and pulls adequately in the mid-range. Reviewers note turbo lag from a stop, a coarse note at high revs and an abrupt conventional stop/start system; 2022 was the last year before the B5 mild hybrid smoothed restarts.
The Aisin 8-speed Geartronic shifts smoothly in steady driving. Reviewers say it is slow to kick down for passing and sometimes hesitates at low speed.
AWD is standard on every 2022 V60 Cross Country, along with a raised ride height (about 8.1 in), an Off Road drive mode and hill descent control. It misses the top band because the system is a front-biased on-demand setup with no low range or torque vectoring.
There is a single powertrain: the T5 AWD gas four, with no electrification. The T8 plug-in hybrid was sold only on the regular V60, not the Cross Country.
2Efficiency & RangeThe V60 Cross Country's lowest-graded category.0.00F
The EPA rates the 2022 V60 Cross Country T5 AWD at 25 MPG combined. That is mediocre against the gas wagon band and one MPG behind the 2023 B5 mild hybrid that replaced it.
The EPA city rating is 22 MPG. With no hybrid assistance at all, the T5 is weakest in stop-and-go driving.
The EPA highway rating is 31 MPG, which is respectable for an AWD wagon but sits in the lower third of the band.
The EPA lists about 398 miles of range on a tank: usable, but short of the longer-legged hybrids in the segment.
The EPA's annual fuel-cost estimate is $3,300, based on premium fuel and the agency's current price assumptions. That is at the expensive end of the wagon band.
The EPA lists the fuel type as premium. Volvo recommends 91 AKI for the T5 while allowing 87 AKI at reduced output. Because premium is recommended rather than strictly required, this lands in the middle band, but it is still an ongoing cost against regular-fuel rivals.
3SafetyThe V60 Cross Country's best-graded category.3.15B
NHTSA rates the 2022 V60 Cross Country T5 AWD at 5 stars overall. The frontal score is 4 stars because the passenger side rated 4; side and rollover are both 5 stars.
The 2022 V60 Cross Country earned an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ with Good results in every crashworthiness test run on this generation. The only blemish is an Acceptable LATCH rating.
City Safety AEB, Lane Keeping Aid, BLIS and Cross Traffic Alert come standard on the single 2022 T5 AWD trim. Adaptive cruise and Pilot Assist are not standard, though; they come in the optional $1,900 Advanced Package along with the 360-degree camera and head-up display.
IIHS rated the standard City Safety system Superior for vehicle-to-vehicle and Superior for daytime pedestrians. It has no nighttime pedestrian rating, which keeps it just under the top band.
BLIS and Cross Traffic Alert are standard on the 2022 T5. Volvo's BLIS adds steer-assist intervention and Cross Traffic Alert can brake on its own, which goes beyond the alert-only systems most rivals use.
Lane Keeping Aid is standard but intervenes abruptly. Pilot Assist adds real lane centering, but only with the optional Advanced Package, and reviewers say it gives up readily when lane lines fade.
Full-speed adaptive cruise with stop-and-go, combined with Pilot Assist, is available but optional on 2022. The base car has conventional cruise only. When fitted, the system is capable but cautious with gaps and slow to resume.
There is no hands-free driving option. Pilot Assist is a hands-on Level 2 system.
The only trim uses LED headlamps with curve-adaptive bending and high-beam assist. IIHS rated them Good with no excessive glare.
The wagon's large rear glass and higher Cross Country ride height give good natural sightlines. The thick D-pillars and high beltline are offset only by a rear camera and parking sensors as standard, because the 360-degree camera is in the optional Advanced Package.
IIHS rated LATCH ease of use Acceptable. There are two full LATCH positions plus a tether-only center seat, and the compact-wagon rear doors and legroom are tighter than in crossover-shaped rivals.
4Space & ComfortOne of the V60 Cross Country's strongest categories.2.97B-
Two-row, five-seat wagon; the only configuration offered.
Below-average front headroom for the wagon band; unchanged SPA-generation body versus 2023.
Mid-band front legroom; carry-over body.
Wagon roofline keeps rear headroom generous.
Rear legroom is the V60's tight spot: compact-executive dimensions, short of the Outback.
Wagon cargo hold well above the sedan-sized band; same load area as the 2023 car.
Competitive everyday storage plus Volvo's fold-up grocery holder and underfloor bin; the cargo-area 12V outlet is only in the Advanced Package.
Volvo front seats are repeatedly praised; rear bench comfortable though short on legroom. Ventilation and extra adjustment require the Lounge Package.
Raised Cross Country suspension improves comfort over the regular V60, but some owners report a bumpy ride.
Well-isolated luxury cabin at cruise; the T5 four gets coarse when pushed.
Heated front seats and dual-zone climate standard; heated rear seats ($750 Climate) and ventilated seats + 4-zone climate ($2,800 Lounge) are options on the single trim.
5Cost of OwnershipOne of the V60 Cross Country's weakest categories.0.97F
For 2022 the US V60 Cross Country came in a single T5 AWD configuration, so the entry price is the only price before options. That sits in the upper part of the $22,000–$55,000 wagon band.
There is only one trim, and dealer-stock cars typically carried metallic paint plus the Premium and/or Advanced packages. That brings the sticker to roughly $49–50k including destination.
European luxury labor rates, plus repair exposure once the 4-year warranty ends, put it mid-band for a wagon. Complimentary maintenance for the first three services offsets part of that.
The 2022 model year held value better than later V60s because of the inflated 2022–2024 used-car market. KBB's current resale of about $26,000 against a $46,795 original MSRP implies roughly 55% retained today, which projects to the high 40s at five years.
Volvo's New Vehicle Limited Warranty runs 4 years/50,000 miles, which is the luxury-class norm.
Volvo has no separate, longer powertrain warranty in the US. The T5 engine and 8-speed automatic are covered only for the basic 4-year/50,000-mile term, which is the floor of the band.
MY2022 gas Volvos include the first three scheduled services free (10k/20k/30k miles, within 3 years). They also get 4 years of unlimited-mileage roadside assistance and a trial of connected services, which adds up to multi-year included maintenance with meaningful perks.
$49,800 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (48% retained, or about $23,904) leaves about $25,896 in depreciation. Add the projected $6,000 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $31,896 in total.
6Reliability & QualityOne of the V60 Cross Country's strongest categories.2.75B-
The 2022 V60 Cross Country is the fourth year of the 2019-onward SPA second generation and the last US year of the conventional T5 (mild hybrid replaced it for 2023, per Wikipedia), so it is a mature carry-over powertrain in a mid-life car. Consumer Reports rates the 2022 V60 above the average 2022 model, but the V60 line overall scores only ~60/100 and is not Recommended, so the prediction is average-to-slightly-better rather than top-tier.
Volvo has sat in the lower half of Consumer Reports' brand reliability rankings and below the industry average in J.D. Power's Vehicle Dependability Study — ahead of Audi and Mercedes-Benz but behind Subaru and the Japanese luxury brands, with electronics/infotainment driving the standing.
The 2022 V60 CC has a notably clean record: the only campaign naming it is a 74-unit steering-gear assembly recall. The 2022 ECM no-start, seat-belt retractor and PHEV battery campaigns cover the V60/V60 Recharge, not the Cross Country, and the fleet-wide rearview-camera recalls start at the 2023 V60CC.
The T5 AWD pairs the 2.0L turbo Drive-E/VEA four (in service since 2014) with the high-volume Aisin 8-speed automatic — a mature combination in its final, most-developed US year, without the 48V starter-generator added for 2023. Held out of the 80s because earlier Drive-E units drew oil-consumption complaints and the engine lacks the high-mileage record of Japanese rivals.
The cabin is a consistent class-leading strength — driftwood/open-pore wood, quality leather and a minimalist Scandinavian design — and reviewers rate it at or above German compact-luxury rivals for the price.
Built on a mature SPA line, the V60 CC is reported as tightly assembled and rattle-free; Volvo's below-average J.D. Power initial-quality standing keeps it under the low 80s, though those demerits concentrate in infotainment rather than physical build.
Volvo's US network of roughly 280 retailers is one of the smaller luxury networks and thin outside metro areas; service satisfaction is mid-pack among luxury brands.
Volvo running costs sit above the industry average but below the German brands; mechanicals are shared with the high-volume XC60/S60, but the low-volume wagon's body, glass and trim parts are largely dealer-channel with a thin aftermarket.
7Technology & InfotainmentMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.07C
Single 9-inch portrait screen, small by 2022 luxury standards.
Sensus is responsive and clean-looking but puts climate and most functions in the touchscreen with few physical controls; 2022 is the last US year before Google built-in.
Both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto standard, but wired only; better than the 2023 Google car, which dropped Android Auto.
Standard Sensus navigation and command-based voice control are functional but dated; most owners use phone projection.
Adequate base system; Harman Kardon is a reasonable $800 upgrade. Bowers & Wilkins not confirmed for the 2022 Cross Country.
12.3-inch configurable digital driver display standard.
Sensus-generation cars get map updates and dealer-installed software; broader OTA arrived with Google built-in on the 2023 V60.
Volvo On Call offers remote start, lock/unlock and locate; no digital key.
A US dealer lists a wireless charging pad and USB ports, but export-market reviews found no pad; a 12V cargo outlet requires the Advanced Package and there is no AC outlet.
Push-button start, power tailgate and remote start via Volvo On Call; no phone-as-key.
Rear camera and parking sensors standard; 360-degree camera only in the $1,900 Advanced Package (made standard for 2023).
HUD available on the only trim through the moderately priced Advanced Package.
8Use-Case FitMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.12C
Low wagon load floor and big cargo hold help with strollers; tight rear legroom and Acceptable LATCH are compromises.
5-star NHTSA and IIHS Top Safety Pick+, with AEB and BLIS standard; adaptive cruise/Pilot Assist and the 360 camera cost $1,900 extra in 2022.
Excellent front seats and a large cargo hold; rear legroom is tight and heated rear seats/4-zone climate are optional.
Enough power and a relatively smooth 8-speed, offset by some low-speed T5 hesitation and climate controls buried in the touchscreen.
25 MPG combined on premium fuel makes it a relatively expensive commuter.
Compact footprint and a 37-ft turning circle; the 360 camera is optional in 2022.
Light trailer rating and a wagon cargo hold suit light duty only.
Luxury-oriented wagon with no fleet or work-duty reputation.
Roof rails and cargo tie-downs, but no 120V outlet; the 12V cargo outlet comes only with the Advanced Package.
Superb seats and ~400-mile range, but Pilot Assist/adaptive cruise is a $1,900 option in 2022.
Standard AWD, ~8 in of clearance and roof rails make it a capable gravel-road wagon, not an off-roader.
Long, flat wagon floor with folding rear seats and roof rails; smaller than an Outback when folded.
9Driving ExperienceMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.39C+
Handles confidently, with good body control for a raised wagon; more composed than crossover rivals.
Edmunds credits good steering feel, while other reviews of the same platform call it light and numb.
No instrumented 2022 stopping test retrieved; reviews raise no brake complaints and AEB rates Superior.
Adequate T5 power through a relatively smooth 8-speed, with low-speed hesitation noted on the pre-mild-hybrid engine.
Quiet at cruise, but the T5 four sounds unrefined when worked hard.
Mid-band turning diameter for a wagon.
Excellent seats and a slightly raised view, but climate and many functions are buried in the Sensus touchscreen.
A pleasant, composed cruiser rather than an engaging drive; the T5 lacks character.
10Value & Market PositionMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.03C
The single T5 AWD configuration comes well equipped. Standard equipment includes AWD, heated seats and steering wheel, navigation, the full City Safety / blind-spot / lane-keeping suite and 18-inch wheels. Pilot Assist, the 360° camera and premium audio still sit in option packages.
At about $47,300 to start, it gives standard AWD, a raised wagon body and strong safety content. That is fair value against the Audi A4 allroad and Mercedes E-Class All-Terrain, but 250 hp and compact-wagon space cost luxury money, and a Subaru Outback XT does much the same job for far less.
Buyers take it or leave it. For 2022 there is one trim (T5 AWD), one powertrain and AWD only; choice comes down to option packages, paint and wheels.
This is a niche seller in a shrinking body style. US V60 volume runs in the low thousands per year, while Volvo's XC60 and XC90 crossovers absorb most of the brand's demand.
Volvo has a positive premium image built on safety leadership and Scandinavian design, with a loyal following that suits this wagon's buyer. It lacks the aspirational pull of the German luxury leaders.
The 2022 model year coincided with peak chip-shortage inventory constraints, when many luxury vehicles sold at or near MSRP. A slow-turning wagon still left some room to negotiate and qualified for Volvo Car Financial lease and APR programs, but discounts were thin.
The second-generation V60 dates to the 2019 model year on the SPA platform, making 2022 its fourth year. 2022 was a carry-over year for the Cross Country: the T5 had no electrification while the S60 and XC60 had already moved to mild-hybrid B5 power, and the B5 reached the Cross Country only in 2023.
Reviewers consistently praise the seats, ride, interior design and the rarity of a lifted luxury wagon. They mark it down for modest T5 power, the Sensus touchscreen that buries common functions, and pricing close to roomier crossovers. It is well liked but seldom the pick of a comparison test.
